70.
The only recent result of a pandemic-era program to create affordable housing is entering the next phase of its development in Queens.

 71.
According to Gothamist, the 350-room JFK Hilton is on track to potentially become the sole byproduct of a program aimed at converting hotels into permanent residences for low-income and formerly homeless New Yorkers.

 72.
The property — located next to the Belt Parkway, just outside JFK Airport — was one of many left vacant during COVID-19 and was chosen as the first property to be approved under a 2021 state law called “Housing Our Neighbors with Dignity Act” should be repurposed (HONDA).

 73.
The Hilton’s $167 million renovation is progressing, with interior demolition complete and conversion into 318 apartments set to begin soon. But advocates lament the fact that three years have passed since HONDA’s passage and the Hilton remains the only short-term accommodation to be remodeled as a result.

 74.
“HONDA was launched with all good intentions” but lacked sufficient funding, Vijay Dandapani, CEO of the Hotel Association of New York City, told Gothamist about the program’s $200 million state budget. “It wasn’t enough to move the needle.”

 75.

A rendering of the green common space in the completed building. Courtesy of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development

 80.

The property was formerly a 350-room hotel. Hilton

 81.
Additionally, many potential hotel candidates did not have large enough rooms for residential conversion and presented complex zoning regulations.

 82.
The refugee crisis also posed a challenge as hotel prices were artificially inflated.

 83.
“Currently there are about 15,000 rooms suitable for migrants,” Dandapani said. “It’s obviously temporary. No one knows exactly how long it would take, but that has taken that inventory off the market and led to compression, allowing other hotels that don’t cater to the migrants to have better occupancy and better prices. “

 84.
Meanwhile, the Hilton’s transformation into Baisley Pond Park Residences continues, with a reopening date currently scheduled for October 2025.

 85.
“The Baisley Pond Park Residences represent what can be achieved when our city and state governments work together with the common goal of providing housing for New Yorkers,” New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said in a statement in December. “Although this is the first hotel conversion project funded by the Housing Our Neighbors with Dignity Act (HONDA) program, I hope it will not be the last.”

 100.
Birdhouse-style “bee hotels” are being built in seven public spaces in New York City to allow endangered native pollinators to thrive – but an expert says they won’t be flying in the concrete jungle.

 101.
The city’s vibrant project provides food and nesting sites in the form of wooden boxes on poles and bee-friendly vegetation, Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said Thursday.

 102.
“Our open streets and public spaces have always been bustling with activity, but this year they will be a blast,” Rodriguez said in a news release.

 103.

The city is building “bee hotels” and underground “bunkers” in seven locations throughout the city. Gregory P. Mango

 104.
“Bees are vital to the health of our planet and this initiative will create habitats for endangered native bee populations and help enable important scientific research.”

 105.
The bee support rooms aim to protect tickler bees, a small type of ground-dwelling insect “that very rarely stings people,” Rodriguez added at a news conference.

 106.

 107.

 108.
The sites will include underground “bunkers” surrounded by plants and nutrient-rich soil where female bees can build their nests and lay their eggs.

 109.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced the bee-friendly plan Thursday. Gregory P. Mango

 110.
But bee expert Anthony “Tony Bees” Planakis, the NYPD’s former unofficial bee expert, warned that attracting the insects to such dense urban environments could “do more harm than good.”

 111.
“My biggest concern is sustainability – bees in the city are not sustainable. There’s not enough space for foraging,” said Planakis, who now works as a private hive removal consultant. “Concrete doesn’t emit pollen.”

 112.
“These bees are stingless, they can’t defend themselves against yellowjackets or hornets,” he said. “Why do you want to mess with nature? Just leave her alone.”

 113.
He said bee hotels in Staten Island and “the suburbs” could be successful — but not in space-constrained boroughs like Manhattan and the Bronx.

 114.

Bee bunkers provide nesting places for endangered tickler bees. Gregory P. Mango

 115.
The bee-friendly stations will be installed at Cooper Square Plaza in Manhattan, 34th Avenue in Queens and Water Street Plaza in Staten Island.

 116.
You’ll also stop by Quisqueya Plaza in the Bronx and Gates Avenue in Brooklyn. They have already been tested at Parkside Plaza in Brooklyn and Fordham Plaza in the Bronx.

 117.
According to a 2022 report from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, up to 60% of the state’s native pollinators are at risk due to population declines.

 118.

New York’s native bee populations have declined. Getty Images/iStockphoto

 119.
For the project, the Department of Transportation partnered with the Horticultural Society of New York, known as The Hort, and Rutgers University.

 120.
“The Hort and the Department of Transportation are converting many of the plantings in public spaces and open streets to perennials, including a variety of native and pollinator plants,” said Jeremy Jungels, senior director of horticulture at the Horticultural Society of New York.

 137.
Some of CNN’s biggest liberal stars, who were forced out under previous leadership, returned to the air in recent weeks, marking another departure from the mission to make the network less partisan.

 138.
It’s been nearly a year since CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, fired the network’s embattled CEO Chris Licht, who was hired to restore the journalistic credibility CNN lost during the Trump era.

 139.
Among the changes Licht made was the staff, notably eliminating some of the most anti-Trump voices that had helped redefine CNN as a news organization allied with MSNBC, which has openly espoused its far-left stance.

 140.
However, at least three of them have crawled back onto CNN’s airwaves.

 141.
Jeffrey Toobin, CNN’s senior legal analyst, “decided” to leave CNN after 20 years in August 2022, although it was widely believed that he was forced out by the Light regime.

 142.

Former CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin has reappeared on the network following his departure in 2022. CNN

 143.
Toobin is perhaps best known for being caught masturbating during a Zoom meeting with his New York colleagues in October 2020.

 144.
He was fired from the New Yorker at the time, but CNN placed him on leave and was eventually welcomed back the following year under Licht’s predecessor, Jeff Zucker.

 145.
Toobin has made a notable resurgence in recent weeks, making at least 20 CNN appearances, many of which discussed former President Trump’s hush money trial. He is often introduced to viewers as a “former federal prosecutor.”

 146.
Don Lemon, another longtime CNN star, was fired last April after several tumultuous months that included the loss of his solo primetime show, off-set drama on his new morning show and his controversial comments about Nikki Haley belonged to those who had their best times behind them.

 147.

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon returned as a guest to talk about his canceled show on X. CNN

 148.

Lemon said he would “never say never” about returning to CNN. CNN

 149.
Last month, Lemon appeared again on CNN to discuss his canceled X deal with Elon Musk on “Erin Burnett OutFront.”

 150.
In a recent interview, Lemon left the door open to an official return to CNN.

 151.
“Look, I would never say never,” Lemon said, “most of the people who were involved in getting me kicked out are gone.” So it’s the way it was before I got there. So that would be interesting.”

 152.
Former CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter was fired in August 2022 after Licht decided to cancel the network’s long-running media-centric Sunday show “Reliable Sources,” which Stelter had hosted since 2013.

 167.
Stelter, who appeared on CNN a few times during a book tour late last year, reappeared twice during coverage of the Trump trial on Tuesday. He was introduced as a “Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair.”

 168.
When asked by X if he was back at CNN permanently, Stelter replied that he was “just visiting.”

 169.
A source familiar with Toobin, Lemon and Stelter’s recent appearances tells Fox News Digital that they were merely “guests” and there are no discussions about bringing them back in an official capacity.

 170.
While the three former CNN employees may not be on the network’s payroll, their return to the airwaves remains a signal of current CNN employees’ sharp rebuke of decisions made during the Light era.

 171.

Former CNN anchor Brian Stelter recently appeared on the network to discuss the trial of Donald Trump. Getty Images for CNN

 172.
Licht was hand-picked by Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav to correct CNN, which continues to lose viewers and is characterized by a liberal anti-Trump stance previously espoused by Zucker, himself resigned in February 2022 amid scandal was overthrown.

 173.

 174.

 175.
During his roughly year-long tenure, Licht struggled to gain the trust of CNN’s base, which rejected claims that the network had a liberal bias, something Licht was tasked with addressing.

 176.
The beginning of the end of Licht’s time at CNN was the now infamous Trump Town Hall in May 2023, which sparked open revolt among his employees.

 177.
The following month, Licht was fired amid further backlash over comments he made in a profile published by The Atlantic.

 178.
In addition to rolling out the red carpet for the CNN employees he fired, Licht appeared to have reversed his programming decisions. “CNN This Morning,” Licht’s attempt to revive the Zucker-era flagship morning show “New Day,” was essentially canceled earlier this year as part of a revamp of the weekday schedule (“Early Start” was notably renamed “CNN Renamed “This Morning”).

 179.
Licht’s other idea, CNN’s weekly primetime experiment “King Charles,” starring CBS anchor Gayle King and former NBA superstar and TNT sports analyst Charles Barkley, quietly ended its limited run this month after dismal viewership numbers.

 180.
“King Charles,” which began airing in November, months after Licht’s firing, debuted with 501,000 total viewers, but viewership only declined after that (CNN repeatedly pointed to strong streaming numbers that were never made public).

 181.
While CNN always branded “King Charles” as a limited series, it was certainly an attempt to help relieve the network’s overcrowded audience by recruiting big-name outside talent.

 182.
With the programming reversal and the return of previously axed on-air personalities, Licht’s permanent footprint at CNN is shrinking even further.

 221.
It is a series of reindeer games.

 222.
Richard Gadd, the creator/star of Netflix’s latest hit psychological thriller “Baby Reindeer,” said he doesn’t want viewers trying to figure out the stalker plot.

 223.
“People I love, worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly caught up in speculation,” Gadd, 33, wrote on his Instagram Story on Monday, April 22 according to The Hollywood Reporter.

 224.
“Please do not speculate about who the real people might be. That’s not the point of our show.”

 229.
Sean Foley, the actor and director mentioned in Gadd’s post, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “The police have been informed and are investigating all defamatory, offensive and threatening posts against me.”

 230.
The show now airing is based on the real-life experiences of Scottish comedian Gadd.

 231.
The story revolves around Donny (Gadd), a struggling comedian who meets Martha (Jessica Gunning) at a bartending gig.

 232.
As she cries, he offers her a free cup of tea, causing her to chase him.

 233.
“This one act of kindness changes Donny’s life forever because for the next three years Martha will haunt him,” Jessica Gunning, who plays Martha, told Tudum. “She sends him 41,000 emails and hundreds of hours of voice messages. But it’s not a traditional stalker story.”

 236.
“I didn’t want it to be a victim narrative,” Gadd told the outlet. “I think there was a version of the show where I was hiding a little bit from my own flaws and I offered her this cup of tea and I’m a perfect nice guy. But I made mistakes. And I think art is quite interesting when you don’t know whose side you’re on. You kind of feel sorry for Martha, but then you feel sorry for Donny, and then you feel sorry for her again, then you hate her and hate him.”

 237.
The show is currently ranked #1 on the Netflix TV charts in the UK and #2 in the US.

 238.
“It’s all 100% true emotionally, if that makes sense,” Gadd told Variety.

 239.
“Everything is taken from events that happened to me and real people I met. But of course, for legal and artistic reasons, the exact truth cannot be reproduced. I mean, there are certain safeguards. You can’t just copy someone else’s life and name and show it on TV. And of course we were very aware that some of the characters in it are vulnerable people and you don’t want to make their lives any more difficult. So you have to change things to protect yourself and other people.”

 240.

Richard Gadd based Baby Reindeer on his life, but doesn’t want viewers to try too hard to figure it out. Ed Miller/Netflix

 243.
Gadd also told the outlet that he wasn’t worried about the real stalker finding him after the show. “Since things ended in real life, it’s nothing to worry about for me.”

 244.
He added that he felt sorry for the real woman. “I felt like [the real Martha] was a vulnerable person who really couldn’t stop. It’s a mental illness and I wanted to portray that. I saw someone I felt sorry for.”

 245.
In a Times article, Gadd described the situation as “resolved” and suggested that she was not in prison because he “didn’t want to throw someone who was in such poor mental health into prison.”

 248.
Still, Keyboard’s investigators have been trying to figure out who the real stalker is, despite Gadd’s protests that that’s “not the point” of the show.

 249.
Many viewers took to social media to find out who the real woman from Gadd’s past is.

 250.
Gadd described his stalker as a “pretty opinionated person” in an interview with GQ.

 251.
“We went to such great lengths to disguise her to the point where I don’t think she would recognize herself,” he said. “What has been borrowed is an emotional truth, not a factual profile of a person.”

 266.
The body of a six-year-old “hero” was found while trying to protect his little brother from a deadly house fire in Virginia, according to the father, who proudly said his sons’ “big hearts” would be donated to help others.

 267.
William Brice and his 3-year-old brother Zachariah were at home with their grandparents and 8-year-old brother Logan when the property went up in flames on April 10, father James Brice told PEOPLE.

 268.
Logan and the grandparents made it out safely, but William and Zachariah were found huddled together and pronounced dead four days later – still side by side.

 269.

William and Zachariah Brice died earlier this month.

 270.
“They told us that when William and Zach were found, William actually covered and protected Zachariah like a shield,” their father said.

 271.
“We knew that was his character because that’s just how he is. He himself is a hero.”

 272.
The two little boys have a special bond, James added.

 273.

 274.

 275.
“Zachariah always followed William everywhere and William was so proud. He told everyone, ‘That’s my little brother,'” he explained.

 276.
James and the boys’ mother, Reina, were at work when the fire broke out. Her oldest son, 13-year-old Seth, was at work with his mother.

 277.
After being found huddled together, William and Zachariah remained unresponsive for 45 minutes as their family desperately prayed that they would get through.

 278.

The house fire was brought under control while the two boys’ parents were at work. WUSA

 279.
“We were scared to death. When they told us that both of our children were really sick and very hurt, we panicked and just started praying,” James said.

 280.
Tragically, however, both boys were declared brain dead due to the effects of smoke inhalation. They lay side by side in a hospital when they were finally pronounced dead on April 14.

 281.
“It was really painful because we could still see the heartbeat. When they finally came for the test, there was no response and they were unable to do anything themselves,” the grieving father added.

 282.

Firefighters found the boys huddled together. WUSA

 283.
Last Thursday, Children’s National Hospital held a tearful honor march for William and Zachariah as they were taken to the operating room to donate their organs, video from WUSA9 showed.

 284.
The teens would save up to nine lives, the outlet said.

 285.
“Hopefully their hearts will endure and the recipients will be able to carry those big hearts within them,” James Brice said.

 286.

The boys died in hospital from smoke inhalation. Facebook / Jamey Brice

 287.
William and Zachariah will be honored with a celebration of life this Saturday, the family’s church in Springfield, WUSA9 added.

 288.
Attendees are asked to wear green or blue – the boys’ favorite colors – or come as characters, superheroes or NFL players.

 289.
“It was dark, it was evil, but we are not running from it. We want to bring light into the darkness and help others who are suffering so we can find meaning,” James said of the family’s ongoing grief.

 443.
That doesn’t exactly mean real estate is “real.” A Corcoran agent who owns a home in the Hamptons is caught up in an Airbnb scam.

 444.
Sarah Stewart, the homeowner, was stunned when she received a call asking her to wire $25,000 for a rental application she knew nothing about, The Real Deal reported.

 445.
It turned out that her East Hampton property had been fraudulently listed on the platform without her knowledge.

 446.

The five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home is currently listed for short-term stays. Google Earth

 447.
Stewart typically rents out her five-bedroom apartment in the Hamptons through Corcoran during the spring and summer seasons, but never through Airbnb.

 448.
The property, which boasts proximity to the ocean and two outdoor showers, is currently available for $175,000 for the month of August through Labor Day.

 449.

 453.
“It’s terribly disturbing and violates my privacy,” Stewart told the outlet. “I’m at a loss.”

 454.
She immediately contacted Airbnb to have the fraudulent listing removed.

 455.
Despite Airbnb’s initial removal efforts, the listing reappeared shortly afterwards.

 456.
Stewart submitted her complaint through Airbnb’s customer service channels, but she was advised to communicate directly with the alleged “host” and disclose her contact information – a troubling undertaking for Stewart as she had concerns about her personal information.

 458.
Ultimately, according to TRD, it was a copyrighted takedown request from Corcoran that caused Airbnb to permanently remove the listing.

 459.
“Who knows what this person or people will do with my information,” Stewart added.

 460.
While the ordeal deeply disturbed Stewart, Airbnb assured that such incidents are not common.

 462.
“Fake listings have no place in our community and after an investigation, we removed the user and listing from the platform,” Airbnb said in a statement. “Issues like this are rare at Airbnb. We continually invest in strengthening our defenses through measures such as listing verification and protecting guest bookings through safeguards such as our secure payment processes, policies and aircover support.”

 463.
This incident highlights the ongoing fight against fraudulent listings on Airbnb.

 464.
Just last September, CEO Brian Chesky highlighted the company’s efforts to crack down on fake listings, revealing that this year alone, 59,000 such listings had been removed and another 157,000 blocked from appearing on the platform.

 465.
Airbnb is committed to using AI technology to verify listings in its top five markets as part of its strategy to maintain integrity and trust within its system.
