82.

Erin Stephens came from a family of factory workers who, while not having gone to college themselves, encouraged her to pursue higher education. Set to graduate Saturday, May 4, with her bachelor’s degree in business administration, Stephens said she is now making them proud.

 83.
“I always wanted to go to college,” she said. “Both my parents would always tell me, ‘You don’t want a job like this, you don’t want to work like this.’ That certainly pushed me towards wanting a better future for myself.”

 84.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2024 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

 85.
But Stephens had no idea what she wanted her future to be, let alone what school to attend.

 86.
“I can’t even count how many colleges I visited during high school,” she said. “I did visit many colleges that were a lot closer to Sidney than Toledo and even some out of state, but I never felt the same way about other colleges as I did with UToledo. It was really the perfect environment for me, where the campus feels small and close-knit, but you’re actually in the middle of a pretty large city with lots to do. No other campus I’ve seen has the same community feeling as UToledo’s does.”

 87.
She entered UToledo with a major in studio arts but found herself hesitating. Though she still enjoys art, she said that she did not see herself having a career in the major and started searching for something else.

 88.
“I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I came here, but my mom was always a huge ‘everything will work itself out’ person,” she said. “Just very optimistic and hopeful, and I think I definitely tried to carry that mindset with me throughout college.”

 89.
Looking through UToledo’s different programs, Stephens searched for something that would spark a light in her. She found that passion with a major in marketing and a minor in sustainability.

 90.
“I ended up choosing marketing as it seemed like I was fairly similar to the arts but would just offer me more broad knowledge of business and how to analyze and make decisions for creative media, such as marketing communications,” Stephens said. “I also felt comfortable with the job opportunities that marketing could offer me, as marketing is such a large field, that I knew I would find something that I enjoyed in the field.”

 91.

Erin Stephens considers her greatest achievement at UToledo to be her journey of personal growth, including her time volunteering for local organizations through Women in Business Leadership.

 92.
Stephens began expanding her horizons through on-campus organizations and forming connections with new people. She was hired as a marketing student worker with Business Career Programs, where she posts about their events through social media. She joined Women in Business Leadership Toledo where she would eventually be elected as executive vice president. She is also involved with the American Marketing Association, as well as the Klar Leadership Academy where she has volunteered for such organizations as Feed My Starving Children and Cherry Street Mission.

 93.
“Joining organizations is truly one of the best things you can do while in college,” Stephens said. “I met all of my good friends through the various organizations that I joined, and they helped me to become much more confident and comfortable being myself.”

 94.
Stephens also landed herself an internship at J.M Smucker Co.

 95.
“After my summer with J.M. Smucker as a marketing innovation intern, I was offered a full-time position for the following year in August 2024,” she said. “There were over 100 interns at the corporate office in Orrville, Ohio, with 20 of them being marketing interns. Only a select few of the marketing interns were offered full-time positions. I didn’t know if I was going to get another offer from them, so it was truly an amazing surprise when they gave me a full-time offer.”

 96.
<img aria-describedby="caption-attachment-85937" loading="lazy" class="wp-image-85937" src="https://news.utoledo.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Erin-Stephens-JM-SMUCKER-MAIN.png" alt="UToledo business graduate Erin Stephens poses in front of a sign for JM Smuckers Co., where she interned. 97.
Stephens also has a summer internship with The Andersons in environmental, social and governance, which aligns toward her goal of a career in sustainability.

 98.
Stephens thanks her mentor, Dr. Terribeth Gordon-Moore, the senior associate dean of the John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation, who cheered her on through the process of earning and performing her internship.

 99.
“Erin has been a valued member of the Business Career Program office,” Gordon-Moore said. “She has a keen eye for detail and possesses a strong marketing expertise. Her commitment to excellence and attention to detail will undoubtedly drive success in her future career endeavors. Erin possesses a wonderful personality in addition to her business acumen. We will miss her in BCP.”

 100.
Stephens’ journey was one of uncertainty, but in the end, she found her way, and considers her greatest achievement the personal growth she obtained at UToledo.

 101.
“I couldn’t encourage students enough to truly explore all your options, as your time in college is really some of the only time you’ll have to try out different companies and different roles and find something you enjoy doing,” she said. “It’s OK if you’re not sure what you want to do for a major or career. To this day I still go back and forth between pursing marketing or pursing an environmental career. I love both, and I’m so happy that I get to experience both while I’m here at UT. As my mom would say, everything will work itself out.”

 119.
A large crowd of Rocket fans attended the press conference, which also featured remarks from The University of Toledo President Gregory Postel and Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair.

Blair, Ginny Boggess, who was officially introduced as the head women’s basketball coach at The University of Toledo at a Tuesday press conference in Savage Arena, and University of Toledo President Gregory Postel.

 121.
Boggess, who has 21 years of coaching experience, comes to Toledo with an impressive resume that includes stops as an assistant coach at Marquette and Penn State, as well as a highly successful stint over the past three years as the head coach at Monmouth University.

 122.
“Every level, every move in my career was never to prepare a shiny resume or to get the next job,” said Boggess, who led Monmouth to an NCAA Tournament appearance in just her second year at the helm. “It was always to prepare me for this moment. Every decision was not based on a salary or a title or a conference. For me it was where I could go to use my gift to empower young women to reach for greatness.”

 123.
Postel recognized the importance of women’s basketball to the University and to the greater Toledo community, along with being a cornerstone of the student-athlete experience.

 124.
“It’s impossible to overestimate the impact that women’s basketball has on the city of Toledo,” Postel said. “The first and most obvious impact is right here on our players. Not only do these young women learn the skills necessary to be great on the court, but they learn the skills necessary to be great in life.”

 125.
Blair noted Boggess’ success at Monmouth, which included a 20-win turnaround over three seasons, and the energy she will bring to the program.

 126.
“She is really accomplished from a head coaching standpoint and was able to flip a program around really quickly,” Blair said. “The energy and juice she brings every day is contagious and I think our fans will see that.”

 127.
Boggess added that Rocket fans will enjoy the style of play that she plans to bring to the Glass City.

 128.
“I don’t care if people know my name, as long as they know our players’ names and the brand of basketball we play,” she said. “We are going to get out and play a selfless brand of basketball. We want to play with pace, be efficient on the offensive end and make the most out of our possessions.”

 129.
Boggess, a native of Hamlin, West Virginia, remarked on how the Toledo community has made the fans in Savage Arena some of the most well-known in college women’s basketball.

 130.
“You guys are known for your fans here,” said Boggess. “The rest of the world is finally catching up to the love of women’s basketball, and Toledo has been far outpacing the rest of the country for a long time.”

The post Ginny Boggess Introduced as Toledo’s New Head Women’s Basketball Coach first appeared on UToledo News.

 146.

Born and raised in Toledo, Gabriel Hagedorn has been playing piano since childhood. Now set to graduate Saturday, May 4, with his master of music in performance, Hagedorn will pursue his lifelong dream of turning his love of music into a career.

 147.
“My mom was my first pianist teacher. She taught me, my three brothers and my sister all the basics of piano and theory as part of our homeschool curriculum,” he said. “She was heavily involved with musicals at the Croswell Opera House as a performer on the stage, and she got us all involved. That started us on learning to sing, which I still do today and enjoy greatly.”

 148.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2024 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

 149.
During high school, Hagedorn continued to nurture his talent for piano and performance. He played for many of the local area’s theater groups, including Perrysburg Musical Theater, St. Ursula Academy, Clay High School, Toledo School for the Arts, The Croswell Opera House, and the University of Toledo, both as an accompanist and music director.

 150.
Through UToledo, he has performed in a couple musicals as both music director and cast member.

 151.
“Arguably, my greatest success at UT was serving as music director for their production of ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ musical, under the wonderful direction of Matt Foss,” Hagedorn said. “I think it was there that I really proved myself in the field of musical direction, even as silly as that show was.”

 152.
Hagedorn thanks many people for nurturing his passion to become a successful musician, but one that stood out was Dr. Michael Boyd, a Distinguished University Professor who is retiring at the end of the semester after 36 years with The University of Toledo Department of Music.

 153.
“Gabriel is one of the most talented students I have had the pleasure to teach,” Boyd said. “It has been wonderful to see the progress he has made, first as an undergraduate and now a graduate student. He has a great work ethic and has been a featured performer in the UT Music Department as both a soloist and as a collaborative pianist. He will be missed when he graduates.”

 154.
Hagedorn also works with CedarCreek Church as the central director of music, where he helps to produce all music material needed for the musicians at all six locations of the church.

 155.

Gabriel Hagedorn has been playing piano since childhood. Now set to graduate Saturday, May 4, with his master of music in performance.

 156.
“We’re really not working with sheet music, meaning we learn everything by ear, along with tracks and chord charts. My work there has really allowed me to develop that ability, and I also get to work with a lot of music production software,” he said. “Having both the ability music to learn by sheet music and by ear has allowed me to work on some great creative projects through our church, and my backgrounds in classical and modern worlds of music help me to speak life into those projects in a way that others could not.”

 157.
Hagedorn said he feels secure in his career which he hopes will continue growing. While he aspires for regional theater opportunities, he said he would like to take the time now to focus on his family.

 158.
“My only plans right now are to continue my work at CedarCreek, and to start venturing into the world of gigs around the area,” he said. “I’ve never had much time to explore that world of gigging.”

 159.
“I’m open to the opportunities God brings along the way and will always welcome the opportunity to work with UT again in some capacity,” he added.

The post Music Performance Graduate Student Prepared for Next Step first appeared on UToledo News.

 175.

Peter Tsatalis and his sister have a close bond; so close, in fact, that he is pursuing her career in dentistry nearly a decade apart.

 176.
Growing up in Dayton, Tsatalis often visited his sister, Dr. Andrea Tsatalis, at UToledo while she was pursuing her undergraduate degree.

 177.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2024 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

 178.
“I have such fond memories of those times and was always attracted to the warmth present at UT,” he said. “The same warmth I was attracted to as a child continued to radiate during my interactions with admissions officers and ultimately drew me to become a Rocket.”

 179.
Despite their eight-year age difference, Tsatalis said Andrea has always been a guiding light in his life. He learned from her as she brought home her assignments and got an early start on his career goals.

 180.
“I vividly remember my sister coming home from dental school on weekends and showing me the wax models and instruments she was learning to use,” he said. “The duality of the dental field in being equally composed of both science and art excited me.”

 181.
But his sister was not the only inspiration that led him to UToledo. During the application process, Tsatalis said he “was very impressed with the ample opportunities provided by UToledo: research opportunities both on Main Campus and at UTMC, the UToledo/Case Western Pipeline dental program and a diverse array of clubs.”

 182.
Graduating Saturday, May 4 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology, Tsatalis said he has enjoyed the challenges he has faced in his major.

 183.
“The excellence of education present at UToledo, the challenging material, and the instruction by quality professors enabled me to grow as a student,” he said. “I am confident that my academic pursuits at The University of Toledo have laid a strong foundation for future academic success in dental school and beyond.”

 184.

Graduating biology student Peter Tsatalis and his older sister, Andrea, at a UT football game in 2023.

 185.
Tsatalis also has experience working as an orthodontist assistant at Buckeye Orthodontics in Dayton, which he said he felt fortunate to gain experience from.

 186.
“I have always dreamed of a career that fulfills me both in the work I do as well as the impact I can have on people’s lives,” he said.

 187.
Tsatalis has forged his own way at UToledo: excelling in his classes, gaining work experience and forming connections with faculty including Dr. Deborah Hendricks, director of the Pre-Health Advising Center.

 188.
“Early on, Peter stood out as a leader who embraces challenges with positivity and optimism. He embodies what a UToledo Rocket stands for,” Hendricks said. “It only takes a minute of talking with him to notice his gift of listening; he listens to hear. He does this because he genuinely cares for others and is intentional about making them feel like they matter.

 189.

Peter Tsatalis and his older sister, Andrea, at a UT football game in 2013.

 190.
“I am confident he will be an amazing dentist someday, who listens mindfully to his patients and provides extraordinary care. I feel blessed to have been part of his journey here at UToledo.”

 191.
Following graduation, Tsatalis will pursue his doctorate of dental surgery degree at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, just like his sister did almost a decade ago. Perhaps he’ll even join her in Tampa, Florida, where she works as an endodontist and lecturer.

 192.
“Hopefully one day life will bring us together as coworkers so that we can continue to motivate and enrich each other, as well as our patients, on a daily basis,” Tsatalis said. “My sister and I are extremely grateful for the supporting environment and opportunities offered by UToledo to make our career and personal dreams a reality.”

 210.

Two cowboys cross spurs in “The Audition.” But is the fictional studio where they and a cast of other inventive characters are trying to win a high-profile Hollywood role big enough for the both of them? Audiences will find out.

 211.
What’s not in question is that the stage is plenty big enough.

 212.

Dr. Rebecca Monteleone, an assistant professor in the Disability Studies Program and the UToledo facilitator of the Open Spot Partnership, runs through lines with members of the theater group.

 213.
The free, public performance that sees Jacob Goda, a junior in the Toledo Transition Program, and Lindsay Hinds, a social work junior, onstage as a pair of cowboys is the culmination of a new class this semester, Disability and Theatre: Applying Theory to Practice. Cross-listed in the Department of Theatre and Film and the Disability Studies Program, and run in collaboration with OpenSpot Theatre in Detroit, Disability and Theatre brings together undergraduate students and community members with intellectual and developmental disabilities to explore issues of access and inclusion in theater.

 214.
“The Audition” is staged at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in UToledo’s Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre. A talk-back with actors and a reception will immediately follow.

 215.
Visitor parking requires payment through the ParkMobile app, a parking meter or a daily permit via ParkUToledo. Visit the ParkUToledo website for more information.

 216.
“Theater tends to assume a certain kind of body and a certain kind of mind, and that means a lot of people don’t get a lot of opportunities to perform,” said Dr. Rebecca Monteleone, who teaches the course as an assistant professor in the Disability Studies Program. “Disability and Theatre is one way to meet what we can clearly see is a demand for accessible and inclusive opportunities in the performing arts.”

 217.
And it’s not just about the benefits to performers, she continued.

 218.
“There’s a value for the audience in placing people with disabilities front and center in this way,” she said. “The audience members are able to develop a better sense of who is in our community and the value that everyone brings.”

 219.
Approximately 30 actors are in the cast for “The Audition,” an original comedy based on characters and ideas that performers workshopped with facilitators from OpenSpot Theatre. OpenSpot specializes in creative, accessible and inclusive theater programming.

 220.
OpenSpot previously worked with the Department of Theatre and Film and the Disability Studies Program on a six-week, non-credit workshop for students and community members that culminated in another original production, “Real Magic,” in October 2023.

 221.
“We love working with The University of Toledo,” said Katie Mann, co-founder of OpenSpot. “Since 2012 we’ve been a mobile theater for people with disabilities. We work with communities all over the Midwest, teaching people how to sing, dance and act. This show, in particular, is one to look out for. With the added support of UToledo and the added weeks of practice, it’s sure to be a showstopper.”

 222.
Approximately one-third of the performers are enrolled in Disability and Theatre for credit. They gather ahead of once-a-week rehearsals to dig into issues of access and inclusion as they apply to theater, as well as tools intended to widen the pool of those who partake.

 223.
One student is scripting a statement introducing what is known as a relaxed performance. The statement is read ahead of the performance to assure the audience that this need not be the sit-still-and-be-quiet experience they might associate with other live performances. Others are exploring open captioning systems or tactile tours that invite patrons, including those who are blind and low vision, to interact with sets, props and costumes.

 224.
Students are joined after their classroom sessions for rehearsals by community members with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many were invited to participate via OpenSpot and the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

 225.
Goda and Hinds are among the students who participate in both sessions.

 226.
Goda, whose most recent theatrical credit came when he was a student at St. Mary Central Catholic High School in Monroe, Michigan, learned about the opportunity through Toledo Transition, a non-degree certificate program for young adult students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 227.
It seemed like an ideal fit, he said.

 228.
“I love the happiness and joy and the smiles on people’s faces,” Goda said. “It brightens my day. And most importantly, these are my people. I love acting, I love singing, I love playing guitar. That’s why I wanted to take this class.”

 229.
Hinds, who is minoring in Disability Studies, has been a theater enthusiast since her eighth-grade debut in a school production of “Mary Poppins.”

 230.
She spoke similarly about her experience with Disability and Theatre.

 231.
“I look forward to this class every week,” she said. “It’s been such a great experience to make theater more inclusive at UToledo, and not only for people with disabilities. The goal is to make sure that everyone feels like they’re welcome in this space.”

The post New Class Explores Accessibility, Inclusion in Theater With April 25 Performance first appeared on UToledo News.

 272.
Boyd is a soloist, collaborative artist, lecturer, teacher and adjudicator. As a concerto soloist, he has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Toledo Symphony, the Dearborn Symphony and the Eastman Chamber Orchestra. Recitals have taken him across the country to California, New York, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio and throughout Europe to Austria, Belgium, Greece and Spain. He most recently performed and taught master classes in China.

 273.
At UToledo, Boyd spearheaded two major fundraising efforts. The Dorothy MacKenzie Price Piano Series, named for its benefactor, is funded in perpetuity thanks to an endowment he helped secure. He also was a major player in the fundraising effort that led to UToledo being designated as an All-Steinway School in 2022.

 274.
An All-Steinway designation means that students and faculty practice and perform only on Steinway instruments. Boyd is a Steinway Artist who was named to the Steinway Music Teacher Hall of Fame in 2023.

 275.
“I’ve enjoyed many diverse opportunities throughout my career, but my greatest legacy will be the students I’ve taught,” Boyd said, “I’ve been proud to watch many go on to exceptional performance and teaching careers of their own.”

 276.
Examples include Olga Rua, who graduated with a master of music in performance degree in 2006 and is now a piano instructor at Cincinnati Music Academy. Juan Montoya, who graduated with a master of music in performance degree in 2009, is a pianist, composer and award-winning conductor, most recently the resident conductor of the Kuala Lumpur City Opera. Phillip Clark, who graduated with a master of music in performance degree in 2012, went on to direct the choirs and orchestra at Adrian College. And Gabriel Hagedorn, who graduated with a bachelor of music degree in 2022 and will graduate with a master of music in performance degree in May, is the central director of music at CedarCreek Church.

The post Retiring Piano Professor, Steinway Artist to Perform Final Concert April 21 first appeared on UToledo News.

 291.

It took a bit of effort to convince Tom and Nancy Koehler, of Upper Sandusky, to let their 20-year-old daughter spend a year in England in 1985.

 292.
She would be one of the first students to participate in a brand-new exchange program between The University of Toledo and the University of Salford, just outside of Manchester, England. And especially in the mid-1980s, it was a big deal: Without cellphones or even email to make the distance seem a bit shorter, the family knew they could expect limited communication over the two semesters.

 293.

Current students, alumni, program directors and other supporters of the program gather on campus for a celebration and reunion on April 13.

 294.
It would be snail mail, primarily; for big news her parents could dial up the pay phone on campus and ask whichever passing student answered to track down their daughter. (Students usually would. They could appreciate the urgency of an expensive long-distance call.)

 295.
Adele Lynagh née Koehler, who went on to graduate from UToledo with a degree in chemistry and today is an anesthesiologist based in Greenville, South Carolina, is glad her parents ultimately agreed.

 296.
“It changed my whole life,” she said recently. “I would not be the same person that I am today if it weren’t for that year at the University of Salford.”

 297.
Lynagh is one of three students in that inaugural cohort who attended the UToledo-Salford Exchange 40th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion in Toledo on Saturday, April 13. It was an opportunity for participants, program directors and other supporters through the years to reconnect and to celebrate the longevity of the exchange program, which has seen 566 students cross the pond since the first four traveled from Salford to Toledo in 1984.

 298.
“It’s a wonderful program,” said Dr. Brian Ashburner, director of the UToledo-Salford Exchange Program and associate professor and associate dean of the UToledo College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “We’re excited that it’s still going strong after four decades, and we look forward to many more years of this mutually beneficial relationship with the University of Salford.”

 299.
The UToledo-Salford Exchange traces its roots to a chemistry professor at UToledo in the early 1980s who was originally from England, and so in a position to notice similarities between the universities in Toledo and Salford. He became a champion of the developing exchange program, whose participation was originally limited to students studying chemistry.

 300.
Today, the yearlong exchange program welcomes applications from juniors studying biological sciences, biochemistry, environmental sciences, geography and planning, and physics.

 301.
“Students in the sciences can find it difficult to fit a semester abroad around the course requirements for their degrees,” Ashburner said. “We’ve designed the exchange program so that they take comparable courses overseas and remain on track for graduation.”

 302.

Oskar Czembor and Jacob Davinson, current exchange students at UToledo from the University of Salford, and Serenity Osborne, a UToledo student who participated in the exchange program during the 2022-23 academic year, speak during the UToledo-Salford Exchange 40th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion in Toledo on April 13.

 303.
Ethan Gartee is one of five UToledo students currently at the University of Salford, while six Salford students are currently studying in Toledo. Gartee said his interest in the exchange program was piqued in a freshman orientation course and later fanned by classmates he met on exchange from Salford. Now in his second semester abroad, he’s enjoying courses like fundamentals of biochemistry, genomics and proteomics, and introduction to parasitology and infectious diseases.

 304.
He’s also enjoying plenty of travel in between his hours in the lab.

 305.
“The greatest highlights of the exchange program are definitely the opportunities to travel and to meet people from all over the world,” he said. “It’s been amazing to connect with people of every background imaginable and to hear what shaped them into the people they have become.”

 306.
Gartee is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology next spring, and then hopes to continue his education with medical school. He said he sees his abroad experience as positioning him well to achieve his career goals.

 307.
“It has not only crafted me into a more well-rounded individual, but has also provided me with laboratory experience that will be useful in the field,” he said. “Whenever you have to learn in a new environment, you really have to remain focused and make sure you fully understand the material. In studying abroad and stepping into a culture and education that is different from what I am used to, I have become much more disciplined and complete in my study skills. Throughout medical school I am going to need every bit of discipline and attentiveness I can muster, and studying abroad has only resulted in my betterment.”

 308.
Lynagh can speak from experience in attesting to the positive experience of the program.

 309.
Travel was a highlight for her, too, she said, recalling the “eye-opening experience” of seeing sites she had heretofore had only read about in textbooks and newspapers. She also enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends, some of whom she was excited to see at the recent reunion.

 310.
Ultimately she credits the abroad experience with expanding her worldview – and the range of opportunities she could envision for herself when she returned to UToledo. She went on to complete a medical degree at the former Medical College of Ohio, an internship in South Carolina and a residency in Georgia, where she practiced for a decade before relocating back to South Carolina.

 311.
“I think the experience impressed on me that there are a lot of opportunities out there, and it gave me the confidence to look for the right opportunities for me,” Lynagh said. “I’m so happy to have had that experience in England. It was a great year, and I’m glad that the exchange program has continued.”
