185.
Newbie here. This question is a little similar to a post from over five years ago (link at the bottom). In this instance, I've already taken some action, probably a little hastily, but need advice from people who know what they are doing so that I can accomplish my mission! 😁

My old website, hosted by Wordpress.com, was coming up for renewal. It was in need of a redesign so I redesigned it using Elementor Hosting, and kept the same URLs and slugs for all pages that were recreated.

The new website went live, with hosting moving to Elementor, at the end of Feb, and thankfully from an SEO perspective it continued to perform well, with five key search terms in the top three and quite a few SERPs. It took a couple of weeks for the appearance of the search results to update to the new look but this wasn't a problem as the links were the same...but in the past two weeks it's all gone wrong, with search terms dropping day by day.

I noticed that the search results had become a mish-mash of the old and new site, in fact the search terms that had dropped seem to pretty much look like they used to on the old site with sitelinks in the search results showing old wording (ie nav labels). I also noticed in Google Search Console that my now redundant site on Wordpress had become a referring site with the URL of myname.wordpress.com, even though it was now marked as 'private'. I assumed it would be out of the picture when the new site went live but it looks like it has started to interfere. I can't imagine this was a coincidence.

So I took the following actions:

I deleted the old site (myname.wordpress.com) as I didn't need it anymore and then resubmitted pages and sitemaps for the live site via GSC.

I then submitted the old site home address to Google to request removal and this morning I submitted all URLS (there are only 13 pages) via the same tool.

My intention is to wait until those URLS have been accepted and to then resubmit sitemaps and all pages on GSC... and then wait.

I imagine I did the things a little hastily, but can someone advise (a) what I need to do now, and (b) what I should've done to prevent the issue from arising in the first place?

Thanks for your help!

Here's the post from a few years ago that I referred to at the start...

https://webmasters.stackexchange.com/a/119004/142895

Following this, we implemented 301 redirects from the non-trailing slash URLs to the new trailing slash URLs.

Since the migration, Google has deindexed all of our old URLs and reindexed the new ones. However, the search engine ranking positions (SERPs) for our posts have dropped from positions 1-8 to positions 20-35, despite the content and incoming, internal links remaining the same.

Is this drop in SERP ranking likely to be temporary following the URL structure change?
Are there any additional steps we should take to help recover our previous rankings?
How long does it typically take for rankings to stabilize after such a change?

Things to know:

We did technical audits using SEM and Screaming Frog. Unfortunately, it's obvious that a high number of these visitors are actually searching for the subject matter 'prostitutes', rather than our editorial content.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to handle this or general guidance.

The traffic itself I don't see as an issue, if not morally questionable from the searchers POV. We are thinking of adding links and support charities in this area and promote these on these pages. But, my main concern is that Google will be ranking use as a website to find 'prostitutes' in these countries, i.e. incorrect audience targeting. Rather than a humanitarian news website.

Note, we have lots of other content which isn't based on these keywords, so blocking these few articles may be an option. But then we risk actual legitimate users searching and finding them.

Any help/advice would be appreciated. Note, due to my contract with the company I am deliberately being vague with details (URL, etc). So please try and answer a general query.

 529.
I just installed Sitemap Creator and run a test. I have a newly developed site using PhalconPHP framework. The issue that I need assistance with is how to prevent bots from creating links to pages that do not exist? Noting this site has never been crawled by anyone but me.

i.e. The log file reports a link to
/buy-homes/1896.00 Sq Ft

At no time anywhere in the script is there a reference to such a page. The only time this is mentioned is within a
div
or a text reference for a google map information window pop-up as text.

Can someone help me understand how crawler bots create links from that which does not exist? How can I prevent this from happening? I would rather not have 1000+ 404 pages listed with Google.

 1. Download the "valid Atom 1.0" banner.

 2. Upload the image to your own server. (This step is important. Please do not link directly to the image on this server.)

 3. Add this HTML to your page (change the image src attribute if necessary):

If you would like to create a text link instead, here is the URL you can use:
