Hepatitis A is a good example, which is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated water through fecal-oral contact (I know, we don’t like reading that…).</p><p>Protozoa : These are microorganisms that can live in water and some are known to cause diseases such as giardiasis (which is quite common, even in cosmopolitan areas) or dysentery.</p><p>Suspended particles: Sand, dirt, leaves, debris, trash, or anything else that could potentially end up in a body of water. Let your imagination run wild and you’ll understand why we don’t want to swallow them.</p><h3>How to Make Water Safe to Drink While Traveling or Hiking: Water Filtration Methods</h3><p>The water purification method I use always depends on the type of trip or excursion I’m planning. For example, the method will differ if I’m drinking water from a well or stream than if I’m treating already filtered “tap” water that’s free of debris.</p><h3>How to purify water with a filter while traveling</h3><p>According to the Larousse dictionary, a filter is a device through which a fluid (water) passes to remove suspended matter (here, we want to eliminate bacteria, viruses, protozoa and other particles).</p><p>Some systems use gravity, while others use a pump, but while the pump will work your biceps more, the end result is the same.</p><p>What makes a difference is the porosity rating of the filter you use. There are different models on the market with varying porosities.From what I could find, the porosity of the filters varies between 0.02 and 0.2 microns (micrometers).</p><p>Suspended particles: variable size</p><p>Depending on the model chosen and the type of activity, you may need to use a second water purification method.</p><p>To give you an idea, I use this model with a porosity index of 0.2 microns which allows viruses to pass through.
