The Packers just can’t stop winning in October

The NFL announced that Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney was named NFC Defensive Player of the Month for October. McKinney had 19 tackles, 2 interceptions, a sack, and a fumble recovery in the Packers’ 4-game win streak during the month.

McKinney has a league-leading 6 interceptions on the year and tied a league record in Week 5 for having 6 straight games with an interception going back to the final week of last season. He’s also the first NFL player since the 1970 merger to have an interception in the first 5 games with a new team.

According to Wes Hodkiwiecz of Packers.com, McKinney is the only Packers defender to play every single snap this season. He’s totaled up 36 tackles, 6 interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble on the year and is the first Packers player since cornerback Willie Buchanon in 1978 to have 6 interceptions in the team’s first 8 games.

McKinney won NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 5 performance against the Rams where he had a fumble recovery and his 5th interception in so many games. He is the first Packers defender to win the Player of the Month award since De’Vondre Campbell in 2021. And if you can believe it, he’s also the first Packers safety to win the award since (drumroll please) Atari Bigby in December 2007. Definitely who we all would have guessed on Packers trivia night.

Thursday Night Football, Week 9: Jets try to right their ship against Texans

The Jets are favorites tonight despite their awful start to the season.

This evening, the NFL gets week 9 underway on Halloween night. Unfortunately for the New York Jets, the first eight games of the season have been a horror movie, as the team is just 2-6 and has already fired its head coach and traded for another one of Aaron Rodgers’ favorite receiving targets.

Tonight, they get a chance to try to get back on track, but they will have to face a 6-2 Houston Texans team that leads the AFC South by two games. The Texans may be a bit of a paper tiger, however; they have an overall point differential of just +9 and only one of their six wins has come with a margin of more than six points.

Adding to the concerns around the Texans is the fact that they recently lost another wide receiver to injury. Stefon Diggs is now out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, while Nico Collins remains out for at least one more week. That will leave the team with Tank Dell and a host of no-names and journeymen to catch passes from C.J. Stroud against a very solid Jets defense.

At least partially due to the Texans’ offensive issues, the Jets are favored this evening at home. Join us for tonight’s game to see if the spooky season continues for Gang Green.

A Ranking of Jordan Morgan’s Horror Leg Sleeve

Happy Halloween

If you don’t know by now, Jordan Morgan - the Green Bay Packers first-round pick from this past draft - has a thing for horror movies. That may be selling it a bit short so I rephrase it in a more accurate way: Jordan Morgan has an entire leg sleeve of horror movie characters.

The Packers' social media team had Packers players trying to guess the characters.

This being Halloween - and me being a bit of a spooky person myself - I thought I’d take a stab at ranking his tattoos by the movie/series. (See what I did there? Stab? Having Heather Graham from the Stab series - the in-movie series of the Scream franchise - would be a true deep cut, but maybe he’s saving that for the next sleeve.)

By my count, he has 12 characters. So let’s run it down.

Michael Myers - Halloween

The original John Carpenter film is one of my all-time favorite movies and one I go back to multiple times each year. Perfect spooky atmosphere, great cast and an all-timer of a soundtrack. Sure, the tropes set up in it have been done to death at this point, but that’s just what happens when you make a horror classic. It’s often cited as the first slasher, even if plenty of movies before showed plenty of the things this film leaned on.

The series after the first one is dicey at best, but it’s madcap in a way that I truly enjoy. In the original run, we get an unconnected anthology movie revolving around pieces of Stonehenge embedded into children’s Halloween masks. When Myers makes his return, he’s controlled by a Druidic cult.

This series gives us Paul Rudd. We get Busta Rhymes drop-kicking Michael Myers. Eventually, we get an unhinged Rob Zombie trying something interesting (and sometimes succeeding), then David Gordon Green wiping away everything except the first movie and trying to make a sequel trilogy (the first movie is good, and the next two devolve at a rapid pace).

Not a perfect series, but it’s insane in a way that I like and the original is a true classic.

5 stars

Leatherface - Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Another series where the original is an absolute classic, and the rest of the series gets a bit batty. But that first movie is ridiculously good. The name of the movie - along with the image of Leatherface - gets this grouped in with the slasher series. And, while the series ends up going that route eventually, the original is a grimy, sweaty, unnerving descent into madness and horror, featuring an all-time Final Girl in Sally Hardesty.

The second movie in the series is a fun - if wildly different - take on the series, with Dennis Hopper going Leatherface/Sawyer Family huntin’. We get a movie with a young Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey (that I think both of those actors have tried to wipe from their resume at some point). We get Alexandra Daddario saying such iconic lines like, “Do your thing, cuz” while throwing a chainsaw. The remake with Jessica Biel is surprisingly good, as is The Beginning.

To call this series “uneven” is being charitable, but the first movie is amazing and there’s enough other good stuff to mark it high on the list.

5 stars

Jason Voorhees - Friday the 13th

Jason doesn’t show up until the second movie and doesn’t get his mask until the third, but he has become one of the most recognizable slashers in pop culture. As with any slasher series that hangs on as long as this one did, there are ups and downs (with Jason X being an absolute up, regardless of what you might hear from others). It’s a series that can get a bit samey after a while, even when they try to move the setting away from Camp Crystal Lake (including a movie where they try to go to New York, but spend 75% of the movie on a boat).

A good - if forgettable at times - slasher series with some nice highs. Parts 2, 4 and 6 are probably my favorites, but you can kind of throw any of these on and you’ll get roughly the same thing. There’s a comfort in that.

5 stars

Freddy Krueger - A Nightmare on Elm Street

First movie is a classic. The last movie - Wes Craven’s New Nightmare - is probably my favorite of the series and one of my all-time favorite movies: it revolves around a great concept around the nature of why we create stories, and, in the process, makes Freddy once again a terrifying figure. After a run where Freddy goes from relatively silent man who hunts you in your dreams to a comic character filled with zingers, it was a refreshing way to end the series.

There’s more variety here than with Friday the 13th as you run through the series. It doesn’t always work but there are some fun, creative moments throughout.

5 stars

Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs

The only movie on this list that won an Oscar for Best Picture, so you can feel real fancy while watching it. This first movie still holds up, with Anthony Hopkins becoming the terrifying and captivating titular character. Tremendous cast.

The next movie isn’t great, but Red Dragon rules and the Hannibal TV show - with the always amazing Mads Mikkelson as Hannibal - is three seasons of art.

5 stars

Regan/Pazuzu - The Exorcist

I got to this one relatively late in life and I feel like the original didn’t pack the same punch as it should have (I saw one of the iconic scenes in The Burbs before I saw The Exorcist itself).

That being said, the original has incredible atmosphere and effects, with a star-making turn from a young Linda Blair. Great cast.

The series devolves pretty terribly after the original (even if The Exorcist III is pretty solid). Horror master Mike Flanagan is picking up the mantle for the next movie, so I’ve got some pretty high hopes for the next installment.

4.5 stars

Pennywise - IT

Morgan’s tattoo features the new, Bill Skarsgard Pennywise from the 2017 series, which I really enjoyed. The 1990 miniseries (with Tim Curry as Pennywise) is iconic, but to say it’s a bit dated is being kind. I know the new series has its detractors (nostalgia is a funny thing), but I really enjoyed this new run, even if the second movie kind of drags a bit at times. Absolutely unreal cast in It Chapter Two, though. Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy are the headliners, but everyone absolutely brings it in this series.

4.5 stars

Billy the Puppet/Jigsaw - Saw

There are 10 Saw movies. TEN! With an eleventh on the way next year. And a lot of them still involve Jigsaw, even though he dies very early in the series. I’ve never seen a series retcon as many moments as this series does. At some point, we get some Scooby-Doo comical reveals, with 5 minute scenes showing how, actually, this person was the mastermind behind the whole thing and this is exactly how they did it. It’s insane and more than a little comical.

We’re getting spin-offs, too. Jigsaw is getting his own movies, which have to be prequels but the actor is 20 years older now than he was when the series started. We also have a movie with Chris Rock for some reason. In the flashbacks within that movie, we know Rock is younger because he is wearing a backwards hat.

Creative kills (because they have to be), but at some point this series just becomes “who wants to watch people get killed in terrible ways.” Which, ya know, hand raised by yours truly, but they’re not really interesting past the first couple movies. The first two movies are legitimately good, though. I go to bat for those pretty hard.

GK Chesterton did it better with Manalive.

3.5 stars

Chucky - Child’s Play

Wild series. WILD series. The first movie doesn’t do a ton for me because why would you not just stomp on him the first time he starts moving? He’s literally a doll. His little footsteps running around the house sound like Kramer’s Mr. Marbles.

Still, the series gets more creative and interesting as it goes on. It’s still kicking (with a couple new movies and a TV series) and is more creative than ever. The series eventually brought in Fiona Dourif (daughter of Brad Dourif, who played the serial killer inhabiting the body of the Good Guy doll who gets stabby stabby), and she’s amazing.

Get past the first 3 movies and this series gets really interesting, but you have to kind of buy into what they’re doing now. It’s fun and creative in a way these slasher series rarely get as they age.

3.5 stars

Kayako - The Grudge

Morgan says this is the scariest movie he’s ever seen. It made him scared of hair, which tracks with the movie. The original (both the Japanese original Ju-On and the American remake) are pretty scary, with the remake helping pave the way for the J-Horror wave in the early 00s. The series as a whole devolves in a hurry, but the original is a solid - if somewhat dated - film.

3 stars

Valak - The Nun/The Conjuring

The first Conjuring movie (which doesn’t feature The Nun) is great, full stop. The Nun herself shows up in the second movie, and, while that movie as a whole is entirely too long, the scenes with The Nun are great and creepy.

The Nun movies? Not great. Great atmosphere and setting. I love that they cast Taissa Farmiga (the younger sister of Vera Farmiga, who plays one of the main characters in the Conjuring series) in the lead role, because she’s great. But the movies themselves don’t do much for me. I have thrown them on the background a lot because they look great, but the movies themselves are kind of a slog.

Watch Taissa Farmiga in The Final Girls, instead. A creative horror-comedy take on the slasher genre with a ton of heart.

2.5 stars

The Creeper - Jeepers Creepers

I don’t want to rank this one because writer/director Victor Salva is a creep of the highest order. The first movie is good (I believe that Justin Long is incapable of being in a bad movie), but please do not pay to watch it. If you want to watch it, find it used on Blu Ray or something.

After the first movie, this series falls off in a hurry. The second movie is bad. The third movie is borderline unwatchable. It’s like they shot the movie with a potato.

Report: Jaguars player refused to play vs. Packers on Sunday

The newest Minnesota Viking caused a scene on Sunday

The Jacksonville Jaguars recently traded their former starting left tackle, Cam Robinson, to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for draft picks that change in value based on Robinson’s performance for the remainder of the 2024 season. Why the Vikings made the trade for Robinson — their starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw went down for the season last week — is obvious. What isn’t so obvious is why the Jaguars were willing to make the deal.

Now, a potential factor has surfaced. Robinson, who played the Green Bay Packers last week, apparently “refused to play” in the game once he was told that he was benched in favor of former second-round tackle Walker Little pre-game, according to Mike Dempsey of 1010XL in Jacksonville. Robinson was coming off of a concussion and only had recently cleared the league’s protocol to return to the field, for added context.

Multiple sources who were present for the game in Jacksonville told me that Robinson and his offensive line coach, Phil Rauscher, had a visible spat on the sideline before kickoff. Presumably, this was because Robinson was just told about his role in the game or was reacting to that recent news.

If Robinson wants to make up his Week 8 effort, though, he’ll have another crack against the Packers: Week 17 at U.S. Bank Stadium when the team will travel to play the Vikings. Minnesota is hoping that the addition of Robinson, which will cost them in the ballpark of $1 million per game in salary paid out, can keep them alive in the NFC playoff race. Currently, the Vikings are the sixth seed in the NFC with a 5-2 record but only rank third in the NFC North because the Packers and Detroit Lions, who will face off against each other this Sunday, combine for a 12-3 record this season.

Lions fans evidently didn’t want to see their team at Lambeau Field

Taking a trip to Lambeau Field is a rite of passage, not just for Packers fans but for anyone who loves football. It’s not the birthplace of football, but it might as well be. No other stadium in the NFL embodies the rich history of the league and its small-town roots, and it’s a bucket-list trip for football fans for good reason. Who wouldn’t want to see their team play there?

Well, evidently, Lions fans. The Packers announced today that a limited number of tickets are now available for Sunday’s game because the Lions returned a portion of their allotment.

NFL players are given the chance to purchase tickets to away games from among the best tickets available after the public sale, but apparently the Lions couldn’t sell their whole allotment. For whatever reason, they couldn’t even give away tickets to see one of the best Lions teams in recent history (heck, perhaps in ALL of history) in one of the most picturesque and historic stadiums in the NFL.

It’s not terribly uncommon; the Texans also returned a portion of their allotment last week. But that’s the Texans! They’re coming from the other end of the country. It’s not even an eight-hour drive from Detroit to Green Bay, and you get an hour back coming from the Eastern time zone to Central. That barely qualifies as a day trip in the Midwest!

We can only speculate as to why, then, the Lions weren’t able to sell out their allotment. Were they afraid of some unholy amalgamation of Jordan Love and Malik Willis shredding the Lions’ defense? Did they have flashbacks to Rashan Gary’s one-man destruction of the Lions’ offensive line last Thanksgiving? Were they fearful of the sheer power of Daniel Whelan’s nuclear-powered punting leg?

Or maybe it’s even more psychological. Maybe Lions players got wind of the fact that this is a Gold Package game and warned their friends and family of the potential danger of mingling with that notoriously unruly crowd.

In any case, there are tickets available for Sunday’s game. Grab yourself one and avoid having to listen to Tom Brady’s commentary.

The Packers lead the league in explosive plays (according to one definition).

Everyone has a little bit of a different definition of what constitutes an “explosive play.” Each NFL team has its own analytics department these days, and they each have their own data sets that help influence in-game decision-making, playcalling tendencies, and many more facets of coaching.

Early on this century, the Green Bay Packers managed to pry one of the NFL’s first “numbers analysts” away from a division rival, and he went on to be an invaluable resource to the team over the next 15 years or so. But one thing that he focused on early in his career in football was the concept of explosive plays.

The Packers still focus on creating those big gains, and they have done a tremendous job so far this season. According to one person’s definition, the Packers have the most in the NFL so far this season, both in total number and per game. Today, we’ll take a closer look at what constitutes an explosive play and how the Packers have been so adept at creating them on offense.

Meet the former Vikings and Packers visionary known as the grandfather of NFL analytics - The Athletic ($)
Mike Eayrs was one of the first people to bring data science to football in the 1980s, and he spent a long tenure working for the Packers. His research helped the Packers decide on a definition of explosive plays that included passes of 16+ yards and runs of 12+ yards.

What You Might’ve Missed: How the big plays worked | Packers.com
Based on Eayrs' definition, the Packers had 7 explosive plays on Sunday (and if pass interference penalties count, then make it 8). Six of those 8 plays were on drives that ended in a score, and only one of Green Bay's six scoring drives did not have an explosive play -- and that drive started at the 5-yard line after a turnover.

Packers' Jordan Love sees 'realistic' shot to play vs. Lions - ESPN
Love accounted for five of the explosives through the air, while Malik Willis ran for one and threw for the game-clincher. Love doesn't think he needs to practice this week to play against Detroit, but it would certainly help his chances.

Packers Film Room: A Potential Shot Against the Lions

Green Bay chases explosive plays. Here’s one they can use on Sunday

Looking at this upcoming Green Bay Packers/Detroit Lions game, I’ve started thinking about ways the Packers may look to hit an explosive play against this Lions' defense. After some rough years, the Lions have a good defense this season. Per FTN’s DVOA, they’re 5th against the pass and 3rd against the run. NFL Pro has them allowing an average of -0.16 EPA per play, 2nd best in the league. Pro Football Reference has them as the second-best defense in the league at the percentage of drives that end in a turnover at 19% (just behind the Packers at 20%), led by the 9 combined INTs from their safety tandem of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.

I could go on, but I feel like the set-up is done. The summary is this: the Lions have a good defense. If the Packers are looking to win this game - and sources tell me they are certainly going to try to do just that - it’s going to be some tough sledding at times.

The Packers will look to create explosive plays on offense, which they’ve been doing all season. On the season, the Packers offense averages 6.8 plays a game that gain 16+ yards, sixth best in the league. The Lions defense is averaging 6.7 plays a game that gain 16+ yards, sixth worst in the league (per Stathead).

The Packers generate explosives, and the Lions give up explosives. With that information, I went hunting for an explosive from the Lions' defense that could fit with the Packers' game plan—you know, for fun.

Right now I’m working under the assumption that Malik Willis will start this game. Even if he doesn’t, we’ve got something that will work for either QB (although the tendency is stronger with Willis).

Per PFF, Malik Willis leads the NFL in percentage of targets behind the line of scrimmage at 35.9%. Jordan Love is tied at 22nd with 16.4% of his targets behind the line of scrimmage. If it’s Willis under center, the Packers will be throwing behind the line of scrimmage a lot, but they’ll be running a lot of concepts that feature a WR behind the line of scrimmage even if Love starts this game. So the tendency will be there either way, which is the important thing for this exercise.

One of their favorite routes behind the line of scrimmage is a WR screen to the boundary. Sometimes they’ll have a single blocker and a bubble release from the inside receiver, but they’ll often have two blockers at the line, then release a third receiver on a motion to that side and use him as the target. Get the ball out quickly to your guy in space with blockers out in front. It’s something they use a lot so the tendency is set. There are a lot of ways to run an explosive off that base concept. We’ll look at one that was successful against the Lions earlier this year, then I’ll throw in a couple that I found around the league that could be built off of this.

In Week 2, the Lions faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With 9:15 remaining in the 2nd quarter and the score tied 6-6, the Bucs showed something that looked like your typical WR screen. Motion to the left, with the two men in front looking to release on blocks. That triggers the inside defender to try to “beat” the block and take on the screen, only to have the slot receiver (Chris Godwin [14]) release up the sideline.

Godwin springs wide open and picks up a 41 yard TD.

Set up your tendency, then run a counter when you get the defense leaning. This is something the Packers have in their playbook and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them trot it out this weekend.

If they want to expand on this idea, we can steal some ideas from what Kliff Kingsbury has done with the Commanders this year. For starters, let’s steal this little beauty. Split-gun with two receivers to the right and a receiver motioning to the flat. At the snap, the two receivers up front set up to block, then the outside receiver cuts back inside and underneath the blockers leaking off the line. We’ve got a nice little tunnel screen to counter the defense flowing to the WR screen on the boundary.

They dressed this up really nicely with some eye candy for the linebackers, with the right tackle and right guard pulling to the left, triggering the linebackers on a power run away from the tunnel screen.

From that same game Kingsbury had a diabolical little follow-go. This looks like a screen-and-go, with the #2 and #3 receivers showing the screen and the outside receiver pushing vertically. It looks like they’ve shown their hand with the vertical route, then they leak out the #3 receiver (who is initially blocking) on a vertical that follows the initial vertical.

If you’re hunting for explosives against a team that gives up explosives, you could do worse than to roll with one of these WR screen variations. Fingers crossed we see at least one this weekend.

Quay Walker clears concussion protocol, will start vs. Lions

Head coach Matt LaFleur makes it clear: Walker is the team’s middle linebacker

After practice on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur announced to the press that not only had middle linebacker Quay Walker cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol, but that Walker will start versus the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Walker missed last week’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with the concussion that he suffered against the Houston Texans the week prior.

With Walker out of the lineup, the Packers won back-to-back games that ended on last-second field goals from new kicker Brandon McManus. Walker was replaced by Eric Wilson, who previously rotated in as an outside linebacker in Green Bay’s 4-3 scheme. In those two games, Wilson recorded 15 total tackles, including five tackles for losses and two sacks.

When Walker has been on the field, Wilson plays about one-third to one-quarter of the team’s total defensive snaps, as he typically only plays in base 4-3 looks, rather than nickel or dime sets, and splits time with Isaiah McDuffie and second-round rookie Edgerrin Cooper, who was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 8.

So while Wilson’s star burned bright for the last two weeks, don’t expect to see a whole lot of him moving forward, at least on defense. In his Packers career, Wilson has played 661 special teams snaps to 344 defensive snaps.

On the non-Walker front, LaFleur also mentioned that quarterback Jordan Love is taking things “one day at a time,” as the team attempts to get him ready to play versus the Lions. Love dropped out of last week's game with a groin injury. LaFleur said that Love is moving around better than during the win versus the Jaguars, but that there is potential for Love to miss the week of practice and still make the start versus Detroit.
