20.
If Brian Gutekunst wants to move up in round one or two, how far can he realistically get?

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is no stranger to making moves on the weekend of the NFL Draft. Gutekunst’s very first draft saw him trade all the way back from the 14th pick to #27 overall, then move up again minutes later to #18. Since then, he has been more than happy to wheel and deal his way through the draft and being much more willing to move up than his predecessor, Ted Thompson.

 21.
Thompson famously only made a single trade up involving a round one pick. That happened in 2009, when he moved up from round two to select Clay Matthews late in the first round. Gutekunst, on the other hand, has made three draft-day trades to move up in round one in just seven drafts and a fourth, just days before the 2023 Draft, that sent a disgruntled quarterback to New York and moved the team up a few spots.

 22.
With Gutey showing a penchant for climbing the board, it’s worth looking at just how far the Packers’ draft capital could get them, either with a move up from their first-round pick at #23 overall or from their second-rounder at #54. Let’s do some math.

 23.

 24.
Moving up in round 1

 25.
If the Packers see a player like Michigan cornerback Will Johnson or Arizona wideout Tetairoa McMillan slide into the teens, it’s not crazy to think that Gutekunst could get aggressive. Green Bay has done the most work on McMillan, at least publicly, of any team in the NFL this spring, and they could be inclined to make a move to get him if he is still on the board in the mid-teens.

 26.
Here are how some potential trade scenarios could work out, using the Rich Hill draft trade chart to come up with roughly equivalent values for the teams involved.

 27.
Packers get pick #18 & #175, Seahawks get #23 and #87

 28.
This one is almost perfect on the chart and Gutekunst would be making a deal with former coworker John Schneider, with whom he has traded up in the past. The Packers traded with Seattle in the first round of the 2018 draft as well, getting pick #18 back that year as well and using it on Jaire Alexander. Green Bay sent picks 27, 76, and 186 for 18 and 248.

 29.
In this scenario, the Packers send their third-round pick to move up five spots and get back a pick late in the fifth round to balance things out.

 30.
Packers get pick #15, Falcons get #23, #87, #124

 31.
This is about as aggressive that the Packers can get without giving up their second-round draft choice. This trade works out evenly on the Rich Hill chart and would find the Packers sending their third- and fourth-round selections to move up eight spots.

 32.
Packers get picks #12 & #228, Cowboys get #23 and #54

 33.
Here’s the big splash. Green Bay could get all the way up to 12 by packaging their first- and second-round picks together. Gutekunst has never traded away his second-round pick to move up several spots in the first round, however, and this feels like a long shot given his history.

 34.

 35.
Moves up in round two

 36.
Okay, now it’s Friday night. Let’s say the Packers didn’t get a wide receiver in round one and they want to climb the board and grab a player like Emeka Egbuka or Jayden Higgins. Or perhaps they got a fortunate fall from McMillan and want to move up for a defensive tackle or cornerback still on the board. Here’s where they could feasibly reach early on day two.

 37.
Packers get pick #39, Bears get #54, #87

 38.
Okay, set aside the idea that the Packers would be trading with the Bears for a minute for the sake of the math. If Green Bay is willing to dump their third-round pick for a big move up in round two, the chart says that gets them up 15 spots to just inside the 30s. Maybe that’s enough to get them up for a cornerback like Maxwell Hairston (36th on the consensus draft board) or Shavon Revel (37th), a sliding edge like Donovan Ezeiruaku (32nd), or a defensive tackle who unexpectedly drops towards the middle of round two.

 39.
Packers get pick #46, Falcons get #54, #124, #237

 40.
To avoid coughing up the third-round selection, let’s look at where the Packers could reach with their 4th-rounder (and a throw-in 7th). That combo takes us up to about 46, which could be a good range for the likes of Higgins (49th), Tyliek Williams (44th), Arkansas edge Landon Jackson (#50), or a sliding cornerback.

 41.
Packers get pick #50, Seahawks get #54, #159, #250

 42.
Here’s a mini-move up using the Packers’ round 5 and a round 7 pick. The Seahawks have two picks shortly ahead of Green Bay (50 and 52), with the Broncos and Buccaneers at 51 and 53. If Gutey has his eye on someone specific while we’re coming down to the wire in the late 40s and doesn’t want to miss out, here’s a chance to make a small move upwards and ensure that one of those teams a few picks ahead of him don’t snag his guy.

 43.
Going for broke: Packers get #34, get #54, #87, #124

 44.
If Gutey really wants one of the first two picks in round two, he can get there. It will just cost him his 3rd- and 4th-round selections to make it happen. This is a real long shot, but he made this type of trade in 2022, sending two picks in the 50s (53 and 59) to Minnesota for pick #34 and the right to draft Christian Watson. (Note: that trade was a big loss for the Packers on the value chart.)

 64.
A little more than a week to go until the NFL’s biggest offseason event.

We’re barely a week away from the draft. The walls are closing in. Time is running short. If you’re still trying to make that perfect mock draft, you’ve still got a few days, but your opportunities to really nail it are dwindling.

 65.
Really, the work is done by now. It was mostly done weeks ago. Barring something very unexpected, the Packers (and every team in the NFL, for that matter) have all the information they need to make their picks for this year’s draft. And truly, for most teams, it’s not going to change all that much. The nature of NFL roster building is such that most rosters are essentially set right now. There won’t be that many surprises between now and Week 1. Even the impact rookies are basically known commodities at this point, even though some of them won’t emerge into prominent roles until well into the season.

 66.
But, as is the case with all hotly anticipated events, we’ve still got to wait. We’ve still got eight days to go until next Thursday, and then a whole day to wait beyond that — though sometimes I wish the draft started at 8 a.m.. That would be a lot more convenient for me, personally, and isn’t that what life is all about?

 67.
It’s going to be quite an event, once it’s here, but we’re going to have to hurry up and wait until then.

 99.
Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Haiston will be in Green Bay next week

Usually, when the NFL announces the players who are going to be attending the draft officially, that decision is final. I can’t remember the last time a player has been added to the pool of players who will be in the green room for the draft in the past.

 100.
That’s exactly what is happening this year, though, according to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler. Per Brugler, Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who wasn’t one of the original 17 players who were announced as draft attendees earlier this week, will be in Green Bay next week for the festivities.

 101.
Hairston’s inclusion is interesting, as he ranks behind every attending prospect other than Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe on the consensus draft board. At the moment, Hairston is ranked as the 36th overall player in the draft. That’s good for the fourth cornerback in the class behind Colorado’s Travis Hunter, Michigan’s Will Johnson and Texas’ Jahdae Barron.

 102.
Notably, Hairston ranks ahead of two players the Green Bay Packers have brought in on pre-draft visits: East Carolina’s Shavon Revel Jr. (37th) and Ole Miss’ Trey Amos (40th).

 103.
According to NFL.com’s team needs, the following teams could potentially take Hairston starting around the 20th overall pick: Denver, Green Bay, Minnesota, Houston, the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore, Washington, Buffalo and Philadelphia. There’s no shortage of cornerback-needy teams. The fact that Hairston will be in attendance over the likes of Revel and Amos is a hint that the league believes one of these teams will bite on him, specifically, in the first round.

 104.
For what it’s worth, Hairston has taken pre-draft visits with the Falcons, Bills, Broncos, Lions, Raiders, Jets, Eagles and Commanders this offseason.

 122.

 123.
 124.
Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt are up for big 2026 pay days, be it on the fifth-year option or not

Officially, the Green Bay Packers have had since January 6th to exercise the fifth-year options of their 2022 first-round picks. So far, only two NFL teams have picked up these options — the Jacksonville Jaguars did it for defensive end Travon Walker and the Houston Texans did it for cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. before giving Stingley a three-year extension.

 125.
So you’re going to see a lot of fifth-year option news over the next two weeks, as the league’s deadline to exercise these options is on May 1st, just a few days after the 2025 NFL Draft concludes. How many of the remaining 30 players will have their fifth-year options picked up? It’s difficult to know, considering that the NFL adjusted how it calculates these fifth-year options over the last collective bargaining agreement, and the cap continues to rise to the tune of about $25 million per year.

 126.
Back in 2022, the Packers picked two first-round picks: linebacker Quay Walker and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt. Now, they have to decide if they want to double down on those decisions beyond their four-year rookie deals.

 127.
Based on what players received this offseason, with Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton’s contract and Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton in mind, both Walker and Wyatt could probably command $15 million per year on the open market. If that sounds crazy to you, it needs to be understood that the cap rising has led to fewer star players reaching free agency, despite teams having all these dollars to spend. What’s happening in the league right now is an explosion in the cost of average to slightly above average starting players, the ones who actually hit the open market and are the targets of big free agent bidding wars. This is simply the world the Packers find themselves in.

 128.
According to Over the Cap, Walker’s fifth-year option would cost the Packers $14.7 million in 2026. Wyatt’s option is set at $13.9 million. At the combine, Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst seemed unhappy that off-ball linebackers and edge defenders who play 3-4 outside linebacker were included together in the NFL’s calculation for the price of Walker’s fifth-year option, but he mentioned the possibility of reaching extensions with both Walker and Wyatt in the future.

 129.
So there’s a chance the team bypasses the option entirely, going straight to extensions instead. Two years ago, the Packers did just that when they gave quarterback Jordan Love a one-year extension instead of picking up his option.

 130.
Whatever Green Bay is going to do, they need to decide their plan of action quickly. Two weeks go by fast, especially with the draft on the horizon.

 150.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler thinks Michigan’s Will Johnson could be there at #23

At the moment, the top full-time cornerback on the consensus draft board is Michigan’s Will Johnson, who is currently ranked as the 12th overall prospect in the draft and was as high as fifth on the board coming into the season. While Johnson has an impressive resume, earning back-to-back All-American honors before declaring as a true junior, he has yet to run during the pre-draft process.

 151.
He’s had three opportunities to do so: At the scouting combine, at Michigan’s pro day and during a private workout on Monday. While Johnson missed the end of his final season with a turf toe injury, it was a hamstring issue that was the issue with him performing at the first two of these events. During his private workout, Johnson posted a 37” vertical jump, but he didn’t run a timed drill beyond his 4.33-second short shuttle — instead focusing on positional drills in front of NFL scouts who made the trip.

 152.
There aren’t big questions about Johnson’s speed, but as The Athletic’s Dane Brugler explained on ESPN’s “This is Football,” cornerback is a “stopwatch position,” so the lack of a 40-yard dash could turn some teams away from taking him early on.

 153.

 154.

 155.
Dane Brugler says CB Will Johnson is a player who may get drafted lower than expected

“There are enough question marks that a team like the Packers could end up getting a really good player there later in the 1st round” #NFLDraft2025 pic.twitter.com/yhTSP9MCsh
— Hogg (@HoggNFL) April 16, 2025

 158.
 159.

 160.
During this podcast, Brugler, who writes what is likely the most in-depth scouting resource available to the public with his “The Beast” series, said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson is available in the 20s. He even mentioned the Green Bay Packers as a potential landing spot for the cornerback.

 161.
As we wrote about earlier this week, the slot cornerback market in the NFL seems to be reacting to the Packers’ signing of Nate Hobbs by treating him as a market-setting deal for the slot position. While reports have claimed that Green Bay plans on playing Hobbs as an outside cornerback, the NFL doesn’t seem to be buying the company line. Of course, the NFL, at large, can certainly be wrong, but it’s at least worth noting that the league is treating Hobbs like a slot defender moving forward.

 162.
Between that piece of information and the fact that the Packers are reportedly still looking for a trade partner to unload Jaire Alexander’s $17.5 million salary for 2025, Green Bay could very well be in the market for an outside cornerback with the 23rd overall pick. And if Brugler is right about Johnson’s potential draft day slip, the Michigan Wolverine could be a Packer in a week.

 180.

 181.
 182.
With depth needed in the back seven, who matches up to Green Bay’s typical preferences?

It is that time of year once again, with the combine and pro days now in the rearview mirror, the Green Bay Packers athletic thresholds big board can ride once again. This year, it will be broken down into individual articles, with more explanations provided. The time period used to generate the thresholds begins when Ted Thompson took over for the Packers back in 2005 and runs through the entirety of Brian Gutekunst’s tenure. Despite being part of the same tree, Ron Wolf’s tenure is not included as athletic testing data from the 1990s is much more sparse.

 183.
We wrap up our series today with the back seven. I’m excluding safeties this year, since I’d be pretty stunned if Green Bay targeted the position in the top 150 given their room is pretty full with three second-year players and Xavier McKinney.

 184.
Linebacker Criteria

 185.
Green Bay is not overly picky at linebacker, and has had many different body types. Because the Packers haven’t used prime draft capital on the position until recent years, the historical data is a lot of pretty big guys that move pretty well, which, with Quay Walker and Edgerrin Coope,r became pretty long guys that move extremely well. On the flip side, they’ve also drafted Isaiah McDuffie, who is a traffic barrel, a stout run defender who is much more modest athletically, which we’ve unfortunately seen any time he’s asked to drop back into coverage. We’re looking at a minimum weight of 225 pounds, so no dime backer/basically safeties on this list. A minimum forty-yard dash time of 4.65, and at least passable agilities with a 4.4 or better in the shuttle and 7.3 or better in the three-cone.

 186.

 187.
 188.

 189.
NOTE: Green highlighting means they met all criteria, yellow means they narrowly missed on one or were trending towards completion but did not complete all the necessary drills, white means they did not complete enough testing to indicate one way or another

 190.
With Edgerrin Cooper looking like a star, and Quay Walker’s play improving in the back half of last season, I wouldn’t expect Green Bay to spend prime draft capital at the position, which means it is a good bet that the depth reinforcements will come on day three. Good news for Green Bay is that a bunch of players meet their typical criteria at that point, with players like Barrett Carter, Jack Kiser, Kobe King, Teddye Buchanan, and Cody Simon checking all of the boxes. Depth and competition for Isaiah McDuffie will most likely come in rounds 4-6, where these players are expected to be taken.

 191.
Notable Prospects Failing: Chris Paul Jr (weight, agilities)

 192.
Cornerback Criteria

 193.
Green Bay is pretty particular in the defensive backfield as a whole. You can’t be too short, you can’t be too light, you can’t be too slow, and you can’t be too stiff. The Mendoza line for the Packers was Jaire Alexander, measuring in at 5’10 2/8”. The Packers haven’t drafted a corner under 190 pounds since before I was born. They don’t ask for pure speed demons, but no one runs worse than 4.57 in the forty, and most players run sub-4.5. In the three-cone, they’re looking for guys who don’t turn like battleships, so sub-7.1 seconds.

 194.

 195.
 196.

 197.
NOTE: Green highlighting means they met all criteria, yellow means they narrowly missed on one or were trending towards completion but did not complete all the necessary drills, white means they did not complete enough testing to indicate one way or another

 198.
Like many of the other positions, no one wants to run the three-cone. Only ten three-cones at the cornerback position this year for combine invitees, and only twelve ran the shuttle. Everyone is scared of the agility drills. Because of that, we don’t have many players that check all the boxes. Only Darien Porter, a converted wide receiver with alien measurables, is in the top 100. Nohl Williams and Caleb Ransaw might be options early on day three. This position is defined by injuries, with Will Johnson, Shavon Revel, and Benjamin Morrison all unable to participate in the testing due to injury. This has also allowed Jahdae Barron to slide up boards simply because he’s a healthy corner that isn’t Travis Hunter, despite the fact he’s quite small for an outside corner.

 199.
With Green Bay going into the season with some combination of Nate Hobbs, Keisean Nixon, and one of the trio of Jaire Alexander, Carrington Valentine, or Javon Bullard (in the slot) as the starting trio, it is more likely that this position is to either fill in depth behind them or looking ahead to replacing Nixon in 2026, as he is a pending free agent.

 200.
Notable Prospects Failing: Travis Hunter (weight), Maxwell Hairston (weight), Azareye’h Thomas (forty), Jacob Parrish (height)

 201.
NOTE: Will Johnson had a private workout on April 15th, but we do not have verified numbers at this time

 221.
 222.
An hour-long documentary will focus on the former QB’s fall from grace.

Once a beloved NFL quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings legend Brett Favre is no stranger to having his name in the news, whether for good or for controversy. As of late, it’s been the latter, and there’s an incoming Netflix documentary which talks all about it.

 223.
In 2021, Netflix debuted a series of documentary films titled Untold, which dives into the details of both well-known and lesser-known sports stories. Previous subjects include the NBA’s infamous “Malice at the Palace”, former Notre Dame football player Manti Te’o, the Tim Tebow-era Florida Gators, and the death of former QB Steve McNair, among others. On May 6th, the series will drop its first of three more weekly installments. The Fall of Favre will air on May 20th.

 224.
The documentary will no doubt discuss the high points of Favre’s career with the Packers, like his multiple MVP awards, and his Super Bowl XXXI win. However, there is a deeper story to tell when it comes to Brett Favre, one which entails accusations of sexual harassment and alleged knowledge of the diversion of Mississippi welfare funds towards a volleyball facility. From director Rebecca Gitlitz, “It was made with the intention of laying out patterns of behaviors, told from the people who lived with the consequences of Favre’s actions, to ask audiences to consider if success should be a shield for harmful behavior.”

 225.
Favre reportedly declined requests for interviews from the filmmakers, so we will not be hearing his side of the story. He did testify in September in front of Congress, denying any knowledge of wrongdoing and claiming this is all a ploy to tarnish his reputation. Whether that’s true or not is a hot topic of discussion, and you can bet your behind that I will be seated for this documentary.

 244.
 245.
Green Bay goes Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen in the first round of our 5.0 mock

In the first edition of our Mock Draft 5.0 voting, the fans here at Acme Packing Company selected Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen as the Green Bay Packers’ first-round pick. Through five of these mock draft simulations, the Packers have selected a defensive tackle every single time: Nolen twice and Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon three times.

 246.
At this point, it’s safe to say that Green Bay fans are expecting a defensive tackle to be the pick with the 23rd overall selection, which makes sense considering the volume of defensive tackles who are expected to be selected around the range that the Packers are picking in the first round. Since we ran our voting, news broke that Green Bay actually brought in Nolen on a pre-draft visit, which will only tie his name to the club even tighter.

 247.
Now that the first round is out of the way, it’s time to dive into the second round, using the Pro Football Network mock draft simulator.
