We wrap up our summer Big Ten basketball preview with a familiar face from the old Pac 12: USC.

The Trojan’s initial venture into Big Ten hoops was a rough one, as they finished only 7-13 in conference play.

Only a few years back, SC was a national contender, primarily thanks to the Mobley brothers. Now, they will look to finish the season above .500, something they were not able to do the year before.

Last season, the Trojans actually defeated Gonzaga, albeit in an exhibition game, to start their 20204-25 campaign. But reality hit quickly with a three-game losing streak even as December had barely begun, the last of which was a home loss to Oregon.

They picked themselves back up and had a four-game winning streak heading into January but were ousted by Michigan and Indiana to start conference play.

Then came a huge road win against #13 Illinois followed by a sound victory over Iowa. Leading up to hosting #24 Wisconsin, they looked to be in pretty good shape. However, the Badgers smacked them by 15.

They earned their biggest win of the season by downing Top 10 Michigan state at home but followed that up with a heartbreaking loss to Northwestern which seemed to kill their spirit.

They went on to lose six of their next seven, dropping them into the bottom tier of the conference.

In the Big Ten Tournament, they battled their way past Rutgers in double overtime but lost a hard-fought bout with Purdue, effectively ending their season.

Roster-wise the Trojans lose their two highest scorers from the previous year in Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates, who provided them with 16 and 14 points a game respectively.

They will bring back 11ppg scorer Terrance Williams and have secured a verbal commitment from five-star recruit Alijah Arenas (son of NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas).

Still, it’s difficult to see this team doing significantly better than in 2025. Expect a sub-500 season, particularly in conference.

Nebraska

24-25 record: 21-12 (10-8 Big-10/T-8th place)

Head coach Amy Williams will be in her tenth season leading the Huskers. Last season, Nebraska maintained the positive momentum that the program has built, and stayed in the middle of the standings despite the addition of the former Pac-12 schools.

The Huskers spent most of the non-conference slate ranked in the top-25, until they lost to then-#17 Georgia Tech. That began three losses in a row to ranked teams (since their first two conference games were against UCLA and USC). Their best win, and their only ranked win, was against #12 Maryland on the road. In the Big Ten tournament, Nebraska lost to UCLA in the quarterfinals. They were a 10-seed in the NCAA tournament and lost in the first round to 7-seed Louisville. On the whole, it was a very successful season for Nebraska.

The best scorer for the Huskers was 6-3 Sr. Alexis Markowski, who started all games and scored 16.3 PPG. She doesn’t return, but Nebraska does bring back their other starters: 5-11 So. G Britt Prince, 6-0 Jr. G Logan Nissley, 5-8 Sr, G Callin Hake, and 6-2 Jr. F Jessica Petrie.

Along with Markowski, three other players graduated. The only player of significance in the group was 5-9 Sr. G Alberte Rimal, who played in all 33 games and started six of them.

Nebraska has a good core group and brought in a few veteran transfers to round out the roster. They include:

6-0 R-Sr. G Hailey Weaver (Northwestern). She played three seasons with the Wildcats and then sat out last season to focus on her education.

6-3 Sr. F Eliza Maupin (Kansas State). Played in 33 games and started twice last season.

6-0 Jr. G Emily Fisher (Maryland). Bench player in 19 games last season, 11 MPG, 1.7 PPG.

This season’s team is solid and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to return to the 2026 NCAA tournament.

Iowa

24-25 record: 23-11 (10-8 Big-10/T-8th place)

This will be Jan Jenson’s second season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Last season, she continued Iowa’s streak in the NCAA tournament with their seventh in a row. The Hawkeyes were a 6-seed, and reached the second round with a loss against #3 Oklahoma. In the non-conference portion of the season, they did not win against any ranked teams in losing to #15 Tennessee. Their best win was against #5 USC.

Four of Iowa’s six main starters were seniors. Two graduated and a third, 6-0 G Kylie Feurbach, returns as a graduate. Also returning are Sr. 6-2 F Hannah Stuelke, who is the only returning player that averaged double-digit PPG last season. Also returning is 5-9 St. G Taylor McCabe. Not returning is 5-10 G Lucy Olsen, who led Iowa in points, PPG, and assists.

The Hawkeyes will be relying on returning starters and the roster behind those starters. They only brought in two players from the portal:

6-0 So. G Emely Rodriguez (UCF)

5-4 So. G Chazadi ‘Chit-Chat’ Wright (Georgia Tech)

Iowa is still fully under the shadow of Caitlin Clark. They will need to improve their season record and try to get into at least the Sweet Sixteen if they’re going to break free even the tiniest bit from that shadow.

Indiana

24-25 record: 20-13 (10-8 Big-10/T-8th place)

Hoosiers head coach Teri Moren picked up her 10th 20-win season in a row in 2024-25, but it was a step back from going 26-6 in 23-24. In their non-conference slate, Indiana beat #18 Baylor and lost to #15 North Carolina. Their best conference win was against Ohio State. They went a couple of rounds into the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tournament, where they lost to a USC both times (Southern California and South Carolina).

The Hoosiers had a combination of experienced players and bit players enter the portal. They lost their best shooter, 6-3 So. G Yarden Garzon, who started all 33 games last year., to Maryland Jr. 6-3 F Lily Meister. Meister played in 33 games and started in 17 games, but chose to transfer to Kansas. The other portal entrants were Lexus Bergesser (Colorado State), Sharnecce Currie-Jelks (Murray State), Julianna LaMendola (Grand Canyon), and Henna Sandvik (Wyoming).

All in all, through graduation or the portal, Indiana lost five of their six primary starters.

With the exodus of so many players, Indiana had to rely heavily upon the portal, and brought in:

5-10 So. G Chloe Spreen (Alabama)

5-9 So. G Phoenix Stotjin (Arkansas)

6-3 So. F Zania Sock-Ngueman (UCLA)

6-3 Jr. F Edessa Noyan (Virginia)

5-7 Sr. G Jerni Kiaku (Duquesne)

Last season, I had felt that Indiana would be up toward the top in the Big Ten standings. They had a good squad with a lot of veteran leadership. That did not happen, and falling to eighth place fell quite short of their expectations. 2025=26 will put a different, much younger team on the court. Seven of the roster of 13 are sophomores. There are only four upperclassmen. The Hoosiers can potentially get a fairly large lineup on the floor, as they have six players that are 6-3 or taller. The task for coach Moren will be to nurture these youngsters while at the same time improve on last season.

Michigan State

24-25 record: 22-10 (11-7 Big-10/T-5th place)

Head coach Robyn Fralick is entering her third season leading the Spartans. Last season resulted in virtually an identical record to her first season. They lost in the first round of the Big Ten tournament to Iowa, and lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to NC State, after defeating Harvard in the first round.

In their non-conference schedule, MSU dropped their only ranked matchup against #20 Alabama. They did not have wins over any B1G teams ranked higher than them.

MSU relied principally on their five starters, three of whom were seniors and will not be returning. Their leading scorer and rebounder, Grace VanSlooten, does return. Also coming back is 5-10 Sr. G Theryn Hallock. Hallock and VanSlooten were two of the three players who averaged double-digit PPG during the season. After them, however, the rest of the team averaged PPG that were nearly half that amount, with most averaging much lower.

The Spartans brought a few players in from the portal, including:

6-1 Sr. G Jaylyn Brown (Arizona State)

6-2 Sr. F Marah Dykstra (Montana State)

5-8 Jr. G Rashunda Jones (Purdue)

5-7 Jr. PG Sara Sambolic (from Slovenia)

All teams like to talk about progress and placing better in their conference as well as in tournament play. MSU is no different; however – like all the other teams around and behind them – they just don’t have the tools to seriously take on the likes of Ohio State, Maryland, UCLA, and USC. MSU will just have to be happy to tread water where they are and continue to play in the postseason.

#25 Michigan

24-25 record: 23-11 (11-7 Big-10/T-5th place)

<img src="https://platform.addictedtoquack.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2025/08/imagn-22648476.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0,0.008703220191471,100,99.982593559617" alt="" title="" data-has-syndication-rights="1" data-caption="
Kim Barnes Arico
" data-portal-copyright="" />

Kim Barnes Arico is entering her 14th season with the Wolverines. She has led her team to postseason play every year and last season was no different. Michigan’s best win during the season was a victory over Maryland in the Big Ten tournament; otherwise, they had no wins over teams that were ranked at the end of the season. Michigan reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, losing to #10 Notre Dame. The Wolverines ended the season in the top-25 at #25.

Michigan had five starters who started and played nearly every game of the season. They were led by a pair of outstanding freshmen: 6-1 G Olivia Olson (shot 46.6%, 38.3% from distance, 5.3 RPG, 16.3 PPG) and 6-0 G Syla Swords (shot 42.9%, 35.7% from distance, 6.2 RPG, 16.0 PPG). Two other starters were seniors; 6-3 G Jordan Hoobs and 6-1 G Greta Kampschroeder. The final starter was another freshman, 5-10 G Mila Holloway.

The other players didn’t see nearly the minutes that these five did. The player next up in terms of minutes, and their tallest player, was 6-5 Jr. Yulia Grabovskaia, who transferred to Washington at the end of the season. Surprisingly, she was the only player to enter the portal. Outside of Hobbs and Kampschroeder (who graduated), the only other senior was a graduate, 6-2 F Ally VanTimmerman. AVT missed her junior season due to injury, and will be back this season as a rare second-season graduate student.

With this relative stability in the roster, Michigan selected modestly from the portal to fill their roster:

6-2 So. G Kendall Dudley (UCLA)

6-3 Jr. F Ashley Sofilkanich (Bucknell)

With a good core of starters returning, as well as most of the bench, I like Michigan’s chances to move up in the Big Ten rankings this coming season.

Illinois

24-25 record: 22-10 (11-7 Big-10/T-5th place)

Before head coach Shauna Green took the Illini to the NCAA tournament in her first season (2022-23), Illinois had not been to The Dance in 20 years. Since then, Illinois has been WBIT champions and made it to the NCAA tournament twice, including last season. So far, she has turned around a program that was camping in the bottom of the B1G standings.

Their best wins last season were against #22 Florida State and #12 Maryland. Although they lost in their opening match against Nebraska in the Big Ten tournament, in the NCAA tourney they defeated (#23 at the time) Creighton before losing to #4 Texas in the second round.

The three main starters in terms of minutes and production for Illinois were seniors. Presumably returning starters will be 6-1 So. F Berry Wallace and 5-9 Jr. G Jasmine Brown-Hagger.

Incoming transfers include:

5-11 Jr. G Maddie Webber (Villanova)

5-11 Gr. G Gisela Segura (LIU)

5-7 So. G Aaliyah Guyton

The Fighting Illini are very young this season, with only one (Gr.) senior and three juniors. The rest of the roster of 15 are sophomores and freshmen. There is height and potential in this group, and we’ll see who can track and keep Illinois WBB in the postseason.

#19 Ohio State

24-25 record: 26-7 (13-5 Big-10/T-3rd place)

Head coach Kevin McGuff’s season last year was nearly identical in record and result to their 2023-24 season. They did not play any ranked teams in their non-conference schedule and defeated those opponents. OSU split regular season matches against Maryland and defeated every other team below them except Indiana and a curious loss against Penn State.

OSU lost in the semifinals of the B1G tournament against UCLA, and entered the NCAA tournament as a 4-seed. They won in the opening round against Montana State, but lost in the Round of 32 against #5-seed Tennessee.

Two of their five starters were seniors. Presumably returning are 5-9 Sr. G Chance Gray, 5-7 So. G Jaloni Cambridge, and 6-0 Sr. F Cotie McMahon.

I say “presumably” because while there are a couple of players that entered the transfer portal at the end of last season, there is no immediate news of transfers into the program and the Buckeyes have not posted a 2025-26 roster. That makes it nigh impossible to give any kind of preview of this coming season any semblance of justice.

#12 Maryland

24-25 record: 25-8 (13-5 Big-10/T-3rd place)

Brenda Frese will be in her 24th season leading the Terrapins. Maryland has seen postseason play in all but her first season, and last year was no exception. The Terrapins played well in their non-conference schedule, even beating #7 Duke in the third game of the season. Later on, they did lose to #4 Texas, and were not able to defeat USC or UCLA. They lost to Michigan in their opening game of the Big Ten tournament, but were able to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament, losing a close contest to South Carolina.

Maryland played mainly six players as starters, and will keep half of those as the others have graduated. Back in 25-26 are: 6-0 Sr. G Kaylene Smikle (points leader with 592 points and 17.9 PPG, 2nd in rebounds), 5-10 Sr. G Bri McDaniel, and 6-2 R-sr. G Saylor Poffenbarger. The Terps did lose some significant scoring and rebounding production from the departing seniors.

Maryland brought in the following players from the portal:

6-3 Sr. F Yarden Garzon (indiana)

5-10 Jr. G Oluchi Okananwa (Duke)

The Terrapins held on to all three freshman recruits from last season and added five more this season. They may have lost some pieces, but the Terrapins are a team that reloads and they should be vying for the top of the Big Ten again this coming season.

#3 UCLA

24-25 record: 34-3 (16-2 Big-10/2nd place)

Head coach Cori Close is entering her 15th season with the Bruins. She has taken them to the postseason for the past 10 seasons straight, including advancing to the Final Four last season. UCLA rolled over everyone in their first season in the Big Ten, and their only regular season losses were to Southern California. Their third loss was in the Final Four to eventual national champion UConn.

The Bruins will be scary good again this coming season. They only lost one of their six main starters. Stars Lauren Betts and KiKi Riace are back. Gabriela Jaquez, Angela Dugalić, and Timea Gardiner are back. I won’t list the six players that entered the portal, and you can’t blame them because they have little chance of starting.

A couple of players that did not play last season will be returning: 5-10 Sr. G Charlisse Leger-Walker (medical redshirt, torn ACL), and 6-4 So. C Amanda Muse (non-medical redshirt). Three freshmen enter this season: 6-0 G Christina Karamouzi, 6-3 F Lena Bilić, and 6-4 F Sienna Betts.

The expectation is that UCLA will be at the top of the B1G – and the NCAA – again this coming season.

#5 USC

24-25 record: 31-5 (17-1 Big-10/1st place)

USC (along with UCLA) was on a roll last season. Like UCLA, USC picked up a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Heck, these teams could meet in the Final Four!

But then, disaster struck in their second-round match against Mississippi State. They won the game handily, but lost star JuJu Watkins to a torn ACL.

That injury will impact USC this season, because there is virtually no chance that Watkins plays this year. The Trojans will not have their most important star, but they are going to be missing other pieces as well.

6-3 Gr. F Kiki Iriafen will be gone. 5-11 Gr. G Talia von Oelhoffen is gone. 6-4 Sr. C/F Rayah Marshall is gone. The only regular starter that will be back in 25-26 is 6-1 So. G Kennedy Smith.

USC had to look to the portal for help, and to that end they have brought in:

6-5 Jr. F Yakiya Milton (Auburn)

5-11 Sr. G Kara Dunn (Georgia Tech)

5-4 Sr. G Londynn Jones (UCLA)

6-3 So. F Dayana Mendes (Washington State)

The Trojans have picked up a 5-star recruit from Oregon, 6-1 G Jazzy Davidson. They are hoping that Davidson can immediately have an impact in the same way that Watkins did as a freshman.

The fact of the matter with USC is, however, that they have likely lost more than they can replace. While they will be very good in 25-26, they are not in the same position that UCLA is in, and will very likely drop from the top of the rankings.

Fall Sports are back! After a long summer we finally have competitive games to talk about again as the Ducks soccer team kicked off their season this past week with 4 non-conference games.

Game 1 Weber State

The first game of the season went about as well as you would hope for. The Ducks didn’t concede a goal and scored 4 themselves to open up the season with a decisive victory.

Game 2 Portland

Next up were the Pilots of Portland who proved to be stingier defensively then Weber State as the game would end in a Nil-Nil draw. The contest was quite competitive with final shots being 9-8 in favor of Portland and final shots on goal being 3-2 in favor of Oregon.

Game 3 Sacramento State

After 2 games at home the Ducks flew to the island of O’ahu in Hawaii for the OUTRIGGER Soccer Kickoff. First up was a game against Sacramento State. The Ducks dominated the balance of play with 20 shots to Sac State’s 9 and 9 on target to Sac State’s 5. But in the 64th minute the Ducks conceded a goal and could never get the equalizer as they fell 1-0.

Game 4 Hawaii

On Sunday the Ducks were in desperate need of a bounce back performance and the team delivered. The Ducks struck early as Sydney Chura found the back of the net in the fifth minute to give the Ducks a very early lead.

Shortly after the 22nd minute hydration break Carly Comack, the native Hawaiian, scored to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

The best way to defend a lead is to make sure the other team never even gets the ball and that is exactly what the Ducks would do the rest of the first half and for the entirety of the second half as Hawaii couldn’t generate any quality looks. In the 87th minute the Ducks would put an exclamation mark on the game as Cailin Bloom would pick up her first collegiate goal to make it 3-0 Ducks.

In addition to the lop sided goal margin Oregon completely dominated the shot clock with 15 to Hawaii’s 8 and 9 on target to Hawaii’s 1.

Oregon has only allowed 1 goal through their first 4 matches, it is the best defensive start to a season since 2014.

The Ducks will look to continue playing tough defense on Thursday when they take on New Mexico at Pape Field.

There isn’t much to read into the final score. The Ducks are a completely different team that have never played together, so they have a lot of sets, positions, and lineups to work through and get the combinations that will be successful for this new team. The problems during the match for the Ducks were, as explained after the game by head coach Trent Kersten, “…more execution things; how do we have a good hand on balls with some of the different lineups and the different setters that are providing us looks?”

It’s a lot to work out, and a reason why Oregon’s schedule starts soft during the non-conference part of the season – they have a continuing work in progress on their hands.

Oregon’s season begins in earnest this coming weekend in the EVEN Hotel Bobcat Invite, hosted by Montana State in Bozeman, MT. Oregon will face South Dakota on Friday, Prairie View A&M on Saturday, and Montana State on Sunday.

In the fall of 2005, there was something brewing in Eugene. Something special.

Never in the history of the Football program had a team made a more drastic winning percentage turnaround in a single season. And what makes it even more interesting is that it wasn’t done with a new coaching staff, new star players, and that it was even done despite serious injury.

Only two things really changed; a new offensive philosophy, and a drive stemming from the last ride for many Senior players.

To preface, we’d have to explain the previous couple seasons.

In 2003 an Oregon team not expected to do much actually did a good deal more than many thought they could, finishing the regular season 8-4, which included a historic win over Michigan that to this day is considered one of the best games to ever take place at Autzen.

Oregon did this platooning two quarterbacks and introducing a bevy of young players to the mix. Understandably, with those players all returning and the quarterback situation firmly down to on starter, expectations were reasonably high for the 2004 season.

But a 1-3 start quickly put an early season damper on the Ducks, as, far from being a Top 25 team, it was questioned whether they could even put together a winning record, something they’d been able to do for the past decade straight.

Thankfully, they rediscovered some mojo in the middle of the season and reeled off four consecutive wins, putting them at a solid 5-3 heading into a trip to Berkely to face Aaron Rodgers and #4 Cal.

After building a big lead, the Ducks fell behind by a point late in the game. Needing only to get into field goal range, a potential game-winning drive came to end after what looked like a sure-fire 4th down completion fell short.

Cal 28, Oregon 27.

Something deflated in the Ducks. Upon returning home for Senior Day, they were unceremoniously ousted by UCLA 34-26.

The Civil War, expected to be a battle of conference title contenders preseason, ended up being for the right to be bowl eligible.

Oregon State obliterated Oregon in Corvallis, winning 50-21, which at the time was the most points scored and largest margin of victory in series history.

It seemed almost incomprehensible after the events of previous seasons.

Oregon finished 5-6 and would not be playing in a Bowl Game at all.

Considering the players and coaching staff remained roughly the same, although they did pull in some good recruits, there was very little confidence Oregon could do much more in 2005 than squeak into a Bowl Game with a winning record.

But my oh my did they surpass that.

Instituting the Spread Option offense for the first time in program history, the Ducks geared more toward maximizing space and utilizing a mobile quarterback.

Though not seemingly a huge implementation, it actually ended up leading them to two National Championship appearances over the next decade.

But at the time it was a relatively new concept nationwide, especially for an Oregon team that had run an under center, pocket-passing scheme under center ever since then head coach Mike Belotti had taken over the team in 1995. Defensively, they had also switched to a 3-4 look, emphasizing flexibility and creating mismatches against opposing offenses.

But behind even that, there was a large group of Senior stars, the same ones that had worked their way into significant roles on the 2003 squad, that absolutely didn’t want to go out on a sub-par season.

Kicking off on the very first day of the College Football season, Oregon got right to work erasing bad memories from the previous season, as they squared off against the Cougars in Houston.

Trailing 21-17 at halftime, the Ducks soared right past Houston in the second half, winning 38-24. Starting quarterback Kellen Clemens threw for 348 yards and two touchdowns, and additionally ran for 72 yards, proving relatively elusive when he decided to tuck and run. Blue chip recruit Jonathan Stewart had 47 yards rushing, but one of his five carries was quite the memorable one as he dragged multiple defenders with him.

For the home opener at Autzen against Montana, an early omen showed that this season would be different.

A year before, Oregon had an opening kickoff return for a touchdown called back and went on to lose in shocking fashion. This time, Stewart’s return counted, and the route was on.

Although Oregon’s run game still left a good deal to be desired, their kicking game was on point, as Pul Martinez set a school record with six field goals. After a 47-14 triumph, Oregon was looking ready to be put to the test by some ranked competition.

That competition would arrive the following week in the form of the #23 Fresno State Bulldogs, who were riding a seven-game winning streak dating back to the previous season.

Fresno jumped ahead 17-0 in the first half, but that’s when Oregon’s new spread option offense showed what it could do. Clemens tossed three consecutive touchdown passes to put the Ducks up 20-17 at halftime.

It continued to be close into the fourth quarter, and with Oregon up by three and driving with under five minutes left, Terrance Whitehead took a screen pass and cut it back 42 yards for a clinching score.

3-0 and into the Top 25, it was obvious this season was going very differently from the one before, and fans were excited to see how Oregon would fare against a historically dominant USC team that would come to town with a #1 ranking they had been holding onto since late 2003.

On a perfect September evening in front of a record crowd at Autzen, the Ducks came out blazing and had seemingly jumped out to a 20-0 lead, but their second touchdown was ruled short, and they settled for a 13-0 lead.

USC cut it to 13-10 at halftime and a feeling that something truly special could happen began to fill the air.

But as the sun went down, so did the Ducks’ hope of pulling the historic upset. Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, SC’s consecutive Heisman winners, put on a show in scoring 35 unanswered in the second half, although it was aided by a few clearly missed calls by the officials that would have at least narrowed the gap. 45-13 USC.

Now came the time when fans would begin to see why this team was so different. Having had their momentum squashed and heading back out on the road, it could easily have been the beginning of another downward slide.

But these Ducks simply wouldn’t have it.

A bounce back 44-20 thumping of Stanford in which Stewart took over with Whitehead out for three rushing touchdowns led to a nighttime showdown in the desert with #17 Arizona State, who had clobbered Oregon for three straight seasons prior.

Another backup shined for Oregon as kicker Matt Evensen, filling in for Martinez, had three field goals on the night, including a 51-yarder for a 13-10 halftime lead.

Picking up the tempo offensively, the Ducks pushed ahead 24-10. But after an ASU score and an Oregon turnover, the Devils were driving for the tie in the third. Oregon came up golden with an interception and followed it up with another touchdown that gave them the cushion they needed to secure the win.

Back in the Top 25 and surging with confidence at this point, the Ducks showed no mercy against Washington upon their return home. The Huskies, in the midst of one of their worst seasons in program history, had absolutely no answer for Oregon defensively.

Clemens set an Autzen record with 36 completions on the afternoon. He finished with 425 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

Having missed a bowl the previous season, the Ducks were already bowl eligible in mid-October. They had followed the end of a three-game winning streak with another, and with the remainder of their schedule looking very doable, what had begun as a season which would hopefully produce a winning record was now leaning toward a potential BCS appearance.

But then came one of many infamous trips to Tucson, which would change the complexion for the entire season.

Roaring ahead 21-0 and looking on their way to another easy win, everything suddenly began to unravel for Oregon.

The Wildcats scored 21 of their own to knot the game up in the fourth quarter, and what looked like a routine sack of Clemens immediately became much, much more as he could put no weight on his leg and had to be carried to the locker room.

To make matters worse, backup Dennis Dixon suffered a concussion on a hard hit and was forced to exit the game as well.

Reeling from injuries and trying to stop Arizona from taking the lead, linebacker Brent Haberly scooped up a fumble and returned it 34 yards to put the Ducks back ahead 28-21. Third-string quarterback Brady Leaf, primarily used for kick-holding, came up big with two first-down conversions that helped seal the victory.

Refuse to lose. Despite everything, the Ducks got it done.

The end of one era, but the beginning of another. There couldn’t have been a better time for a BYE week as Dixon had time to recover from his concussion and the coaching staff had time to prep for a quarterback platoon, the second time in three seasons they would have to implement such a system.

Welcoming in #23 California on a cold, rainy day at Autzen, Oregon came out strong as Dixon led the opening drive for a touchdown with a laser pass to Demetrius Williams.

Cal, behind a little running back known as Marshawn Lynch, kept fighting back though, and every time Oregon pulled ahead, they were right there to even the score. Even after pushing the lead to ten in the third, the Bears clawed their way back.

After a scoreless fourth quarter, the game was headed to the first overtime of the season.

Brady Leaf got the chance to lead the go-ahead drive, and he capped it off with a touchdown pass to James Finley. With Cal having to get into the end zone to force another tie, the Ducks’ defense came up big with a 4th down stop that sealed the deal.

Another tough battle, another win on the board. After the heartbreak in Berkely the previous year, this victory was extra sweet.

Now hovering just outside the Top 10, Oregon ventured to Pullman to face a struggling Washington State team. But what looked like it should be an easy win turned into another battle to the finish.

After a Hail Mary from WSU to end the half landed and put them in the lead, the Cougs pushed it to a 21-10 advantage in the third.

But Oregon came roaring back and after a 68-yard bomb from Dixon to 3-sport star Jordan Kent, it was the Ducks who held the double-digit lead.

WSU refused to fold, however, and forged another tie with five minutes left. This time it was Dixon who led the game-winning drive, getting Oregon right down to the four-yard line with four ticks left on the clock.

Martinez knocked in the field goal for the win.

It was only the second time in program history the team had finished the season undefeated on the road.

<img src="https://platform.addictedtoquack.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2025/08/imagn-2153371.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0,6.0169491525424,100,87.966101694915" alt="" title="" data-has-syndication-rights="1" data-caption="November 19, 2005; Eugene, OR USA; Oregon Ducks Demetrius Williams (6) and Andiel Brown (27) hold up a bag of Tostitos Chips during the fourth quarter at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon.
Into the Top 10 and back home to Autzen for a Senior sendoff and a chance for revenge yet again. With fog pouring into the stadium, it became instantly obvious this Civil War would be the polar opposite from the year before.

Right off the bat, corner Aaron Gipson snagged an interception and dashed 60 yards for a pick-six.

The floodgates opened.

Handing the ball to their bruising running backs Whitehead and Stewart, Oregon pushed ahead 28-7 at halftime.

If there was any hope for an Oregon State comeback, it was squashed to open the second half, as Stewart ran the kickoff 97 yards through the fog for another score.

With Dixon unleashing his arm and the defense devouring the Beavs at the line of scrimmage, the Ducks pushed and pushed and made sure that not only did they win, but they reset the records that had been broken the previous year during their demolition (most points scored in Civil War history and largest margin of victory).

56-14. 10-1 on the season. Only one year after they’d sulked off knowing they wouldn’t go to a bowl game, Oregon celebrated with the throng of fans that ended up on the field, throwing Tostitos chips all over the place and chanting “B-C-S!”

Realistically, there didn’t seem to be any reason for Oregon not to head to Tempe for the Fiesta Bowl (sponsored by Tostitos). However, the “beloved” BCS system seemed decided that Ohio State and Notre Dame, who each had two losses on the season to Oregon’s one, was the better draw.

Perhaps it was the letdown of not going to the desert, or it well could have been running into a much better defense than what they were used to in the Pac 10, but the Ducks ended up losing the Holiday Bowl to Oklahoma 14-17 when their potential game-winning drive came to a halt with an interception.

It hurt, especially after the resilience the team had shown down the stretch of the season. But in the midst of the disappointment came the realization of what Oregon had just done.

They had gone from a losing record for the first time since 1993 to equaling the regular season record of the 2001 team. All in a year.

Though it didn’t happen instantly, that team had set the stage for what was to come.

In 2007, Dixon was on his way to the Heisman and Oregon on their way to play for the National Championship before he suffered a torn ACL.

Behind new head coach Chip Kelly and his ramped-up read option offense, the Ducks continued their upward climb, making it to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 15 years and playing in the National Title game the next.

In the decade following the Redeem Team’s run, the Ducks had won four conference titles, been ranked #1 in the nation on multiple occasions, won two Rose Bowls, had a Heisman winner, and played twice for the National Title.

Standout players from the ‘05 “Redeem Team”:

Kellen Clemens – senior quarterback

Terrance Whitehead – senior running back

Demitrius Williams – senior wideout
