51.

Ambassador Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff of the Office of the Prime Minister, issued a press release yesterday (see below), making several confusing rebukes to Antigua.News in relation to an article we published regarding the recent arrest of Roger Ver.

 52.
According to Hurst, Roger Ver “is being described as an Antiguan and Barbudan citizen” by antigua.news, which seems to us to be an indisputable fact.

 53.
Hurst then adds, “In fact, he has not broken a single law in Antigua and Barbuda.” This statement is rather incomprehensible and blatantly out of context, considering that in our article, we did not write that Ver has committed offenses in Antigua and Barbuda.

 54.
But Hurst goes further, even going so far as to state that “Yet, Antigua.News, eager to sully the name of Antigua and Barbuda and to harm the Citizenship by Investment Program, describes this former U.S. citizen as a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda.”.

 55.
It is important to recognize the gravity of the accusation made against us and address it appropriately.

 56.
It should be noted that the claim made by Hurst is entirely baseless, as our article does not make any reference to the fact that Roger Ver obtained citizenship via the CBI Program.

 57.
Ignoring such a serious allegation is not an option, and we must take steps to refute it.

 58.
Ambassador Hurst’s recent statement was quite extreme, considering that he serves as the “Chief of Staff” of the prime minister’s office. It is surprising that someone in his position would make such a statement. Not unless, of course, it is the opinion of the Government.

 59.
Is this then the opinion of the prime minister and his cabinet on antigua.news? We need to know Mr Chief of Staff.

 60.
It is surprising that Hurst only criticized Antigua.news and completely ignored Antiguanewsroom and Antiguabreakingnews. All three portals published news about Roger Ver’s arrest.

 61.
In fact, the other two portals also wrote stories that were similar in tone to that of antigua.news. They used headlines such as “Antiguan citizen charged for tax fraud” and “Antiguan citizen charged in US for tax fraud”.

 62.
Let us refresh your memory Mr Ambassador; Antiguanewsroom reported that Roger Ver obtained his citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda through the CBI program, while Antigua News did not mention the CBI program at all, likely to avoid questioning the citizenship program.

 63.
Antiguanewsroom also mentioned that Roger Ver was once considered for the position of non-resident ambassador in Japan, a fact that was known to antigua.news but was not included in the report because it could potentially cause embarrassment to the country.

 64.
This is also because, from information in our possession, the government put that appointment on hold because it was not completely satisfied with the due diligence carried out on Roger Ver (this fact was instead glossed over by Antiguanewsroom).

 68.

In case Mr Hurst you conveniently forgot to read the other articles published by these other two media entities, you can check them out

 69.
Antigua.news has a commitment to balance and impartiality, giving a voice to all members of the majority and opposition without discrimination.

 70.
Our editorial policy is highly professional. We refrain from personal attacks and show respect for the principle of the presumption of innocence.

 71.
This principle applies to Roger Ver as well, who has made many valuable investments in the country and has also distinguished himself through his philanthropic activities during the COVID pandemic.

 72.
We want to hope that this is not Ambassador Hurst’s personal attack on Antigua.news.

 73.
We are not finished with our observations on your press statement.

 74.
In fact, Hurst’s press release risks being a dangerous boomerang because it could be interpreted as a desire to distinguish native Antiguans from CIP Antiguans.

 75.
The view of antigua.news, on the other hand, is that there can be no series A citizens and series B citizens.

 76.
A foreigner who acquires citizenship with the CBI program should be considered an Antiguan like everyone else, for better or worse, especially when he or she decides to live and invest in our country, as Roger Ver did.

 77.
In other words, one cannot consider a foreigner as an Antiguan only when he or she makes donations to the state or achieves major successes and instead dismiss him or her as a foreigner when he or she is in trouble.

 78.
This is precisely, Ambassador Hurst, the worst way to “sully the name of Antigua and Barbuda and to harm the Citizenship by Investment Program” and we are very sorry indeed that you do not understand this.

 79.
One last note about ANR, which wanted to knot Hurst’s press release in the following way:

 80.
“The Antigua.News (which fabricated a recent news story about a fetus at the landfill) portal has done it again. (N.B THIS PORTAL IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANR and HAS J TRUTH AS ITS MAIN SPOKESMAN”

 81.
Dear Antigua News Room, Antigua.News fabricated the story about the fetus to show everyone that you shamelessly copy our articles with no credit.

 82.
Regarding JTruth, Antigua. News is a sponsor of The Happening program, proving that our portal gives everyone a voice without bias. This is our “pride”; a word that is perhaps foreign to ANR.

 187.
Some basic safeguards to adopt

 188.
Essentially, the message is to remain guarded with several key points to follow, which in most cases are simply to observe some common sense moves, such as:

 189.
Verify the identity of the contacts claiming emergencies, especially when contacted from a new phone number. Of course there is a chance it could be genuine, but it should be relatively straightforward to establish if they are genuine.

 190.
Never share highly sensitive information like two-factor authentication codes, irrespective of the requester’s supposed identity.

 191.
Make use of WhatsApp’s security settings to enhance account protection, such as enabling two-step verification.

 221.
Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, has made a surprise visit to Ukraine, becoming the first member of the UK royal family to do so since the Russian invasion.

 222.
Her one-day trip was arranged by the Foreign Office to “demonstrate solidarity with the men, women and children impacted by the war”.

 223.
The Duchess, who is married to Prince Edward, the youngest brother of King Charles III, paid her respects to those who had lost their lives in the town of Bucha during the illegal occupation.

 224.
This was followed by a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska, to whom she passed on a private message from the King, before discussing support for survivors of sexual violence in the conflict.

 225.
Other royals have visited regions close to Ukraine during the war years, with Charles, then Prince of Wales, visiting refugees who had come across the border into Romania soon after its beginning in 2022.

 226.
Then Prince William visited British troops in Poland just over the border, but Sophie has taken the next step.

 227.
Support from the royals

 228.
The normally neutral views of the Royal Family have been replaced by a firm show of sometimes outspoken support for Ukraine, since the conflict began.

 229.
King Charles marked the second anniversary of the invasion in February of this year, by speaking of the “indescribable aggression” and slamming the “unprovoked attack” by Russia.

 230.
He spoke of the importance of supporting Ukraine, as well as mentioning the sympathies of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who had symbolically appeared beside a big bowl of flowers in Ukrainian national colours, soon after the start of the war.

 231.
Moving stories of the conflict

 232.
During her trip, Sophie talked to survivors of sexual violence and torture, then heard from children who had been returned to Ukraine after being forcibly separated from their families and deported by Russia, as part of a sustained campaign to erase Ukrainian culture.

 233.
This was followed by a trip to see the “Road to Life” bridge, a key component in the resistance movement, when it was blown up to stop Russian soldiers advancing on Kyiv, then later became a vital route for people to flee to safety from the illegal occupation.

 234.
The Duchess also demonstrated her support for Ukrainian women who have played important roles in community recovery, in a meeting with volunteers who help with mental health care activities for children.

 235.
Sophie has long been a supporter of the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative, together with Queen Camilla who recently spoke of the importance of “preventing the sexual violence that all too often takes place in war zones.”

 271.

 272.
French actor Gérard Depardieu has been taken into police custody in Paris following allegations of sexual assault on two women.

 273.
The Oscar-nominated 75-year-old, who is already being investigated for rape, was summoned for questioning early Monday 29 April, accused of molesting staff on two separate film sets in in 2014 and also in 2021.

 274.
In 2020 the Green Card actor was charged with the rape of actor Charlotte Arnould and that case remains open. A separate case was brought by actor Hélène Darras but was dropped by prosecutors for being past the statute of limitations.

 275.
Depardieu, who is a prominent figure in French and international cinema having made more than 200 films, has also been accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen women over the years.

 276.
Procedure to be met

 277.
Prosecutors in Paris said they currently could not share any information until such time that they have assessed any potential charges and directions to pursue.

 278.
They explained that the parties involved in the proceedings should be informed first of their content, in accordance with the criminal procedure, which aims to guarantee the rights of everyone involved.

 279.
Shocking accusation

 280.
The most recent of the two accusations is alleged to have taken place on the set of The Green Shutters three years ago.

 281.
Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, the lawyer of the first complainant – referred to only as Amelie – released some details of the assault saying that her client was passing through a corridor where Mr Depardieu was sitting and he “grabbed her, trapped her between his legs and touched her body up to her breasts, using crude language, leaving her feeling completely powerless, incapable of escaping his trap.”

 282.
The lawyer said evidence pointed to “sexual assault, harassment and abuse.”

 283.
Rape charge pending

 284.
Ms Durrieu-Diebolt is also representing Charlotte Arnould, the 28-year-old,who claims she was raped and sexually assaulted by Depardieu.

 285.
There is CCTV footage of the famous actor performing a sex act on Ms Arnould at his Paris mansion in August 2018, but he insists it was consensual. Ms Arnould renounced her legal right to anonymity at the end of 2021, following Depardieu being charged with rape and sexual assault.

 289.

Home assault

 290.
The second complaint involves an incident that occurred on Le Magician et les Siamois – The Magician and the Siamese – a movie released in 2015. A 24-year-old production assistant says the crew met at Depardieu’s Paris home, where she was molested, with the actor also making obscene comments.

 291.
Other claims over the years

 292.
These accusations all followed claims by another woman who said she was assaulted by Depardieu when she worked as an extra on film Disco back in 2007.

 293.
She alleges: “He is unmanageable. He looks at me as if I were a piece of meat.” She explained how she was wearing an ultra-tight dress, and he pulled her closer to him by the waist, then ran his hand over her hips and all over her bottom.

 294.
President’s controversial backing

 295.
In December 2023, the Spanish journalist and writer Ruth Baza filed a complaint in Spain against the Depardieu for rape in Paris dating back to 1995.

 296.
In the same month, French President Emmanuel Macron sparked fury by defending Depardieu. Mr Macron appeared on a TV chat show and said he detested the actor being subjected to a “manhunt”.

 297.
Denials and counter accusations

 298.
Depardieu vehemently denies all the accusations against him. He has previously denied all allegations of wrong doing and claims any relationships he has had were always consensual.

 299.
In an open letter published last year, he said: “Never, ever have I abused a woman. I am neither a rapist nor a predator.” He also accused his “enemies” of subjecting him to a “lynching” in the media.

 334.
The tourist was just 10 metres from the shoreline at Courland Bay on the north coast when the shark struck. He suffered damage to his left arm and leg, puncture wounds to the abdomen and injuries to his right hand, the full extent of which are still being evaluated.

 335.
Heavily sedated

 336.
Mrs Smith explained how Peter had undergoing surgery and was now under heavy medication. She added that medics were now deciding the “future course of treatment” with much dependant upon how he responds initially.

 337.
He is however inevitably going to be facing further major surgery for his life-changing injuries.

 338.
Friends fight with the shark

 339.
She was keen to place on record her thanks to everyone who assisted at the scene, especially the brave “two friends” who remained in the water during the attack to “battle” with the shark and very probably saved his life.

 340.
In addition, the naturally shaken Brit wanted to thank “the wonderfully kind people of Tobago for all their help and support”.

 376.
A British man has been seriously injured after being attacked by a shark on the Caribbean island of Tobago.

 377.
Tourist, Peter Smith, a 64-year-old from Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire, England, is fighting for his life with arm, leg and stomach injuries and is receiving critical care at Scarborough General Hospital.

 378.
The incident occurred near to the Starfish Hotel in Courland Bay, on the island’s north coast at around 9am on Friday 26 April.

 379.
The holidaymaker was swimming in waist-deep water, just 10 metres from the shore on Turtle Beach when witnesses say a bull shark, measuring 10 feet long and two feet wide, attacked from behind.

 380.
Authorities have temporarily closed off the beach along with six other beaches in the area, and are prohibiting reef tours and scuba diving as a precaution.

 381.
Stable condition

 382.
In a statement posted to social media, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, who is equivalent to the Prime Minister of Tobago, reported that Mr Smith was in a stable condition, but remained in an ICU and was being kept sedated.

 383.
He said the man had had some fingers reattached but still had “significant wounds” to one of his legs and would require “extensive work” but the immediate priority was to ensure life was saved.

 384.
Mr Augustine told how the victim had been in Tobago with his wife and friends, and that the group had been due to fly home that day. He said the victim’s family were being supported by the local government and the British High Commission.

 385.
Beaches closed

 386.
Then from a safety viewpoint he announced: “Out of an abundance of caution we are forced to temporarily close beaches: Plymouth, Courland Bay, Black Rock, Mt. Irvine, Buccoo, Pigeon Point, Store Bay and all coastal areas in between.”

 387.
The stretch is on the western tip of the island measuring around seven miles (11.3km) in distance. It includes a marine park surrounding the Bucco Reef, one of the island’s largest coral reefs and a popular tourist attraction.

 388.
Continuing, Mr Augustine wrote that drone reconnaissance/surveillance was being carried out and the Department of Fisheries were combing the area to ensure safety.

 392.

Witnesses tell of shock attack

 393.
Witness Stephanie Wright, from West Sussex in the UK said: “We saw some people on the beach, and I originally thought the gentleman had had a cardiac arrest, and I thought they were helping him, but then I saw someone running down with a towel, and then I saw a dorsal fin come out of the water”.

 394.
Another eyewitness, Orion Jakerov, water sports manager at the nearby Starfish Hotel, said other people in the water were “physically trying to fight off the shark”. He remarked that he didn’t think anyone saw the shark until it struck.

 395.
“They were about waist height in the water so they weren’t out of their depth. I think their backs were turned and they were just kind of lounging around. Nobody saw the shark coming.”

 396.
Incredibly rare

 397.
The International Shark Attack File database records that the vast majority of shark attacks in the region occur further north, in the central Caribbean and off the eastern and southern coasts of the US.

 398.
In the last 20 years, there have been only two recorded shark attacks as far south as Tobago, and neither was within 200 miles of the island itself.

 399.
Bull sharks, which can be found in both fresh and salt water, are known to be one of the more aggressive types of shark and are responsible for the majority of incidents recorded close to shorelines. They are one of three shark species, alongside tiger and great white that are the most likely to attack humans.

 429.
Buckingham Palace have announced that King Charles will be returning to public engagements from next week after making encouraging progress in his on-going cancer treatment.

 430.
His Majesty will begin with what will be a symbolic trip to a cancer treatment centre, on Tuesday 30 April, with Queen Camilla alongside him.

 431.
His engagements will gradually increase over the coming weeks and if all goes well, he will look forward to welcoming Emperor and Empress of Japan in the summer months for a state visit.

 432.
It remains to be seen if Charles will be attending some of the bigger events later in the royal calendar, such as Trooping the Colour, the D-Day commemorations, and overseas trips previously planned for the autumn.

 433.
There has been no official notification given with regards to any sign of conclusion in his treatment and the Palace have urged continuing caution.

 434.
Right signals

 435.
Since his diagnosis, the King has been absent from public engagements. Although he has been carrying out his private work as head of state, including the regular meetings with the prime minister, this visit will be his first in an official capacity this year.

 436.
This positive move certainly sends the right signals, and it is hoped he will be able to increase gradually if he shows no adverse reaction. It is understood he will be able to meet people face-to-face, though each engagement will be reviewed individually.

 437.
Meet with patients

 438.
At next week’s trip to a cancer treatment centre, Charles will meet patients and staff and show his support for cancer research, but the Palace confirmed that it is not where he is receiving his treatment.

 439.
There had been encouraging signs at an Easter Sunday church service in Windsor, when he surprised crowds by greeting well-wishers and looking in good spirits.

 440.
Last minute changes possible

 441.
When the Japanese Emperor and Empress visit in the summer there will be a state banquet at Buckingham Palace and a carriage parade, but there could be last minute adaptations, depending on the King’s condition.

 447.
The doctors will also be heavily involved in his subsequent appearances which will be “carefully calibrated” to ensure he is not taking on too much.

 451.
They added that planning will continue, but nothing can be confirmed or guaranteed at this stage, except to say that no risks will be taken with regards to His Majesty’s continued recovery.
