What if I don’t live in a zero-deductible state?

Despite many states not requiring insurance companies to waive deductibles for windshield replacements or repair, some have implemented them anyway.
Unless you live in a state like Florida where state legislation mandates free windshield replacement, insurance companies have no obligation to waive deductibles and offer special treatment for windshield repairs or replacement. However, despite no laws requiring it, many insurance companies choose to provide free windshield crack repairs to comprehensive policy holders to avoid heftier bills down the road.

Why would they do this?

While those with older vehicles lacking any sort of ADAS, windshield replacements often fall within the range of $200-400. However, a Tesla Model X panoramic windshield can cost up to $2300 — quite the difference. With more and more vehicles implementing technology to improve safety via ADAS or other telematics, the average replacement and calibration cost continues to rise.

Comprehensive policy holders facing a replacement cost of $400 and a deductible of $250 may choose to pay out of pocket, but technology in windshields becomes increasingly prevalent this scenario becomes much more infrequent. The Model X may seem like a drastic example, but even a 2020 Honda Civic can come with a $900+ price tag for a windshield replacement. A healthy chunk of this is not going towards the glass itself, but to the technology calibration, a vital procedure to ensure your safety features are in fact keeping you safer. By choosing to be proactive and stop the damage before it spreads, windshield repairs can often be done for less than $150.

Does my windshield need replaced or can it be repaired?

There are many factors that determine whether a windshield needs to be replaced, or if it can simply be repaired. Most commonly, the factors include proximity to edge, size, quantity, and the damage’s impairment to the driver’s line of sight that dictate the outcome. Click here to learn more about when your windshield cannot be repaired and needs replaced.

Which companies offer this?

Here is a list of some major insurance companies, and their policies on waiving deductibles for windshield repairs. If your policy provider is not listed, they may still offer a waiver. Please consult your policy or contact your insurance agent to have any questions answered.

Chances are, if you are reading this blog post, you are currently shopping for auto insurance. If that is the case, take a deep breath, it’s not as complicated as it probably seems right now.

What is a deductible?

One of the critical components of any insurance policy is usually the deductible and often ranged from $100 to $2000 depending on your policy. In short, the deductible is the amount that you must pay before the insurance kicks in and covers the rest of the bill. Think of it like a child wanting a new lego set, where the parents say, “if you save up $10, we will pay for the rest”. It will be a set dollar amount for almost all insurance policies instead of a percentage of the total bill. The parents aren’t saying, “you pay 10%, we’ll pay the rest”; it’s a set $10 requirement regardless of the lego set’s cost. Note: If I were the kid in this analogy, I would most definitely be buying the 4784 piece Star Destroyer.

How big should my deductible be?

While a $100 deductible may sound fantastic, you will undoubtedly feel that on the back end when paying your monthly bill. Increasing your deductible to say $500 or $1000 will decrease your monthly premium and have you on the hook for more upfront if an incident does occur. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ for insurance policies and deductibles, so it is best to have a conversation with your insurance agent to determine what is best for you.

Want help deciding whether to make a claim? Try out our Claim Calculator to get a recommendation.

Are there exceptions to paying my deductible?

Depending on your insurance company and policy, you may have the option to include additional endorsements or waivers for specific components of your vehicle. Essentially, this is an add-on to your policy that waives your deductible in the event damage occurs. By far, the most common occurrence of this is an auto glass endorsement. This is optional for insurance companies to offer in most states. However, Arizona is one of the few states that require companies to provide this.

For many car owners, navigating the world of auto insurance policies, coverage needed, and deductibles can be a daunting and frustrating experience. While there are hundreds (if not thousands) of different choices and options to choose from, the right choice often comes down to personal preference and individual needs.

What’s the difference?

One of the most common questions we get regarding insurance, is ‘what is the difference between collision and comprehensive coverage’? In the most simple terms, collision coverage covers damage that takes place during a collision (duh), and comprehensive policies provide coverage for incidents other than collisions. Most common instances of this would be fire damage, flooding, hail damage, tree branches, etc.

What does collision insurance cover?

Collision with an object (yes, the moving light pole that came out of nowhere counts)

A single-car accident that involves rolling or falling over

What is required by law?

All 50 states have a state minimum requirement for auto insurance, however, that almost entirely consists of bodily injury and property damage liability coverage. They’re just trying to be sure you can pay if you do damage to someone else. But what about your coverage? These minimums leave many additional decisions about your auto insurance coverage in your hands. Collision, ride-sharing, or even sound system coverage are up to the discretion of the owner. While the intricacies of the auto insurance world can be confusing at first, it allows vehicle owners to find a policy that works best for their individual needs.

*Note: Many leasing companies often require comprehensive coverage of their vehicles

This post is designed to help you begin to understand the differences between insurance policies but is not meant to be a substitute for a licensed insurance agent. If you have questions regarding your insurance policy, we highly recommend reaching out and speaking to your agent to further identify your needs and find a policy that works best for you.

Getting your windshield replaced can be an expensive ordeal. Thankfully, some states require insurers to offer “endorsements” on their auto insurance policies that take the sting out of your wallet. These coverage options guarantee that you’ll get your windshield replaced at no cost or for a lower-than-normal deductible.

You’ll need to be sure that your policy has these endorsements in these states but it’s well worth checking. Here’s a breakdown of what each “endorsement” state offers:

Arizona (AZ)

There is an optional “full glass” or “safety equipment” coverage that you can purchase, which pays for windshield repairs with no deductible.
Connecticut (CT)

Has an optional “Full Glass Coverage” option that covers broken safety glass (including windshields) with no deductible.
Massachusetts (MA)

If you have comprehensive insurance, the repair/replace is either at no cost to you or there is a $100 deductible (only if you opted in to it), regardless of your normal comprehensive deductible.

Minnesota (MN)

Insurance companies are required to offer optional Full Glass Replacement coverage; if you have this, there is no cost for you to repair or replace a windshield.

ADAS, or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems were first being used roughly 50 years ago with the introduction of anti-lock brakes. However, over the last five decades this has evolved to include features such as blind-spot warnings and even automatic emergency braking. According to a report by AAA, “At least one ADAS feature is available on 92.7 percent of new vehicles available in the U.S. as of May 2018”.

The global ADAS market is currently $27 Billion, and is expected to reach $83 Billion by 2030.

Using small cameras and sensors positioned around the exterior of the vehicle and directly behind the windshield, the vehicle’s internal computer is able to analyze this information in real-time and trigger a response to improve safety.

Using a scale provided by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), ADAS is divided into five levels based on their level of automation. In level 0, ADAS cannot control the vehicle but simply provides information to the driver; this would include features such as parking sensors or forward-collision warnings. Levels 1 and 2 are similar in that the driver does most of the decision making, such as autonomous parking or adaptive cruise control. From levels 3 to 5, the level of autonomy in the vehicle drastically increases, with level 5 signifying a fully autonomous vehicle.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, here are some of the amazing ADAS features commercially available to be on the lookout for!

Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

According to safercar.gov, “Automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems detect an impending forward crash with another vehicle in time to avoid or mitigate the crash.” While traveling forward, the ADAS system is able to detect potential collisions and automatically apply the brakes to avoid or lessen the severity of the impact. Over the years, this has expanded to include pedestrian detection in many situations.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control automatic braking and acceleration to maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. As this feature continues to evolve, some can include coming to a complete stop and then continuing.

Lane Keeping Assistance

Lane departure warnings were one of the earlier available ADAS features in recent years, however lane keeping assistance goes one step further. Instead of simply using the exterior cameras to inform the driver that vehicle markers have been crossed, automated steering helps adjust the vehicle and re-center within the desired lane.

Adaptive Headlights

When driving at night along curved roads or over hills, traditional headlights oftentimes leave blind spots and increase the risk of accident. Using electronic sensors, adaptive headlights can detect steering angles to adjust the direction of illumination based on the vehicle’s trajectory.

Drowsiness Detection

Most ADAS features are designed to inform and protect the driver from what is taking place outside of the vehicle, however drowsiness detection focuses on the drivers. Recognizing fatigue through steering behaviors and other benchmarks such as lane deviation and time driven, the vehicle is able to warn drivers it may be unsafe to drive or a break is needed.

Adaptive Windshield Wipers

Mother nature is many things, but predictable is usually not one of those. Adaptive windshield wipers use infrared sensors that can detect when water droplets are on the windshield, and can automatically turn on the wipers at the necessary speed and frequency. Especially when in stop and go or simply heavy traffic, removing the need for drivers to constantly be fidgeting and adjusting the windshield wipers allows them to focus on the road and be on the lookout for dangerous situations.

Wrong-way driving warning

Utilizing sensors and exterior cameras, vehicles with this system are able to identify the direction of oncoming traffic flow. Used in collaboration with lane detection, drivers are additionally notified when they begin to merge on the wrong side of the road.

ADAS Calibration

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are phenomenal pieces of technology that have likely saved countless lives over the last decade and beyond. However, more dangerous than not having these features is having an uncalibrated ADAS. In the event of an accident, windshield replacement, or even sometimes a tire rotation, this can disturb your sensor’s accuracy. This can lead to a false sense of security, where the driver is depending on a malfunctioning warning system, and in turn endanger yourself and those around you.

If your vehicle has ADAS and you are receiving a windshield replacement, please make the right decision to pay for re-calibration, it could save someone’s life. Use our instant quote tool to get in touch with a trusted provider that can get your back on the road today, safely.

For many people, auto glass terminology can feel like a foreign language. However, when your windshield is damaged, it is often helpful to understand basic terminology to determine your next steps. For example, a floating crack will often have a much different suggested solution than an edge crack. Here are the terms to help you take care of the pain in your glass.

Auto Glass Terminology

Acute Area: This is the area of the windshield directly in front of the driver. Starting right above the wheel, it is approximately 8.5″ high and 11″ wide. In North America, this is used by auto glass shops and insurance companies as the standard for the driver’s critical vision area.

Belt Molding: A rubber molding placed between the panels of a vehicle door, through which the glass door is raised or lowered.

Bull’s Eye: A distinctive type of damage occurring to glass, where the damage is marked by a clean, separated cone in the outer layer.

Chip: Windshield damage is classified as a chip when impact damage to laminated glass does not penetrate the outer layer, however glass is missing from the point of impact.

Combination Break: A type of windshield damage classification when there have been more than two types of damage.

Cure Time: The time required for a substance or material to dry or set given the current weather. For example, the adhesive used to secure a windshield will often take longer to cure during the winter months.

Dauber: A single-use cotton applicator used when applying primers and preps to the glass and metal bonding surfaces.

Dry Glazing: A method of using a preformed gasket to secure glass in a frame.

Durometer: A device for measuring the hardness of a material, typically of sealants and polymers.

Edge Crack: Any crack on a windshield that extends to or very close to the edge of the windshield.

Elongation: The flexibility or stretchability of cured adhesive. Glass adhesive must have the right flexibility to absorb body flex but still support the glass.

Emery: A mineral substance used to polish and grind glass.

Floating Crack: A windshield crack that takes place in the middle of the glass, and does not reach or get close to the edge.

Half Moon: Similar to a bullseye, this is a damage that has a half-circle separation around the impact point.

Headliner: The fabric that lines the roof of a passenger vehicle.

Impact: The point at which an object hits the windshield and is the origin of the damage.

Legs: Short cracks that form from the edges of a break.

OEM: An abbreviation for Original Engine Manufacturer. Sometimes used to refer to “name brand” glass.

Poly Vinyl Butyral: The vinyl layer in laminated glass, separating the two panes.

Quarter Glass: The rear side windows in a vehicle.

Resin: Generally a non-water-soluble material which has little to no tendency to crystallize. Because of this, it is often used to fill chips and cracks during windshield repairs.

Reveal Molding: Oftentimes a plastic molding used to cover the edges of the windshield and back glass.

Safety Glass: A term used for either laminated or tempered glass.

Side-Lite: Passenger car side windows.

Tempered Glass: A break-resistant glass that shatters into small granular pieces when broken to avoid injury.

If you’re reading this due to damaged auto glass, we can help. Use our instant quote tool to get back on the road today.

When it comes to windshield wiper blades, they work great until they don’t. Knowing how and when to replace them can do wonders for not only your safety but also your sanity while driving in the rain.

Do My Windshield Wipers Need to Be Replaced?

If you’re not sure whether your wiper blades need replacing or not, check out our post When Do You Need To Change Your Windshield Wipers? If the answer is yes, come back to this page and we’ll walk you through it.

How to Replace Windshield Wipers

The first step in replacing a windshield wiper blade is to determine what size and type you will need.

For obvious reasons, a Ford F-350 Superduty is likely to require a different size blade than a Toyota Prius. Your vehicle owners manual will include these details, however, a quick google search will also do the trick.
It is important to note, not all wipers operate or are replaced the same way. For some, you will be replacing the entire arm mechanism, but for others, you will only be replacing the blade insert.

Find the unlatching mechanism and remove the installed blade.

Depending on the manufacturer, there are a few different styles of mechanisms used to attach wiper blades. For some, you may need to push a button or pull a latch, while others may simply require a pinch and pull.
When in doubt, Google is your best friend.

Clean off the new blade.

Trust me, the irony is not lost on us. However, if your wiper has spent any significant time in packaging or at the store, it has likely accumulated some dirt, grease, or other substances that aren’t going to help your windshield to look squeaky clean. Take a moment to wipe it down before installing it.

Install the new wiper blade or blade insert.

Reversing what you did in step one, install the new wiper blade or blade insert.

Acquire a cold drink.

It’s hot out, you deserve it.
If you’ve somehow managed to damage your windshield in the process of replacing your wipers you should do two things. Firstly, submit your story to ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’, and secondly, contact us here at Glassy to help get you fixed up and back on the road safely.

Collision Coverage vs Comprehensive Coverage

Understanding what type of coverage you have should be the first step in determining your plan. While Collision Coverage will only go into effect when your vehicle is in an accident, Comprehensive Coverage will cover damage regardless of the cause.

Due to its higher cost and in most cases not being required, make sure to check your policy and determine which one you have.

Check Your Deductible

In some cases, insurance deductibles can be as high as $500 or more. Hypothetically speaking, you could have a $750 deductible but your windshield replacement costs only $500. In this scenario, you would file a claim yet not receive any money towards it since you do not meet the deductible threshold.

On the flip side, some insurance companies such as Geico offer a zero-deductible for windshield repairs when you carry a comprehensive policy. Like us at Glassy, they understand that a pro-active repair job can save quite a bit of time and money instead of waiting until a full windshield replacement is necessary.

All policies are different, so take the time to refresh your memory before making decisions.

Will Your Premium Increase?

Most insurance companies view windshield damage as an ‘act of nature’, and by default are classified as ‘no-fault’ damages. Because of this, your premiums will likely not increase due to making a claim. However, it’s well worth a few minutes of your time to contact your agent and find out for sure before making a claim.
