21.

DeSclafani Gets First Start of Season as D-backs Go For Series Win

 22.

DeSclafani will likely be on a pitch count of up to 70 maximum according to Torey Lovullo. He has not gone more than three innings in an appearance yet this season. Depending on his effectiveness, Sunday could quickly morph into a full bullpen game, however.

 23.
https://www.si.com/mlb/diamondbacks/arizona-diamondbacks-game-day/desclafani-gets-first-start-season-d-backs-go-for-series-win

Ryne Nelson’s perfect game bid broken up in 6th inning vs. Royals

 24.

 25.
“If he was at 90 pitches or less (entering the ninth with the bid intact), he probably would’ve finished the game.”

 26.
The manager said he has to be stubborn about protecting his players in those situations, but Nelson was always going to get the seventh inning so he could get deserved appreciation from the crowd afterwards.

 29.

“Pretty lights out performance by Ryne Nelson on a day we really needed it,” Lovullo said. “Things were stretched out pretty thin last night. He comes in and just solidifies the entire game. Lets us get our footing offensively.”

 30.
https://www.si.com/mlb/diamondbacks/arizona-diamondbacks-game-day/ryne-nelson-mows-down-royals-dominant-d-backs-win

Carroll activated, culminating speedy return from fractured left wrist

 31.

“He just wants to help the team win,” Suárez said. “And he’s hungry to play. He’s a guy who loves this game and just wants to be out on the field. It’s very impressive because with the fracture he has, they said he might be lost for like a month, but he’s back [much sooner]. It’s awesome for us. For me, I was very happy to see him back in the lineup.”

 51.
Bees are endlessly interesting creatures with a lot of amazing fun facts. One of which is that bees can fly over 29,525 feet above sea level. That’s even higher than Mount Everest, the tallest peak in the world.

Humans have jumped further than horses in the Olympics.

 52.
The Olympics has been a good measure for humanity’s physical limits and capabilities. You’d be surprised that the world record for the longest human long jump is even greater than the record for longest long jump done by a horse. When Mike Powell jumped 8.95 meters, he beat the record of Extra Dry who jumped at 6.10 meters.

 75.
 76.
Someone’s looking awfully ace-like just now....

So going into today’s game I was bracing myself for what has been seeming like the increasingly inevitable Great Diamondbacks Rental Sell-Off of 2025, thinking about how much of a bummer it would be to watch out the rest of the year with Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez playing baseball in other teams’ uniforms. After our dismal finish to the San Francisco series and the even more dismal performance of Eduardo Rodriguez and company last night, it’s been getting harder and harder to deny that it’s a real possibility in the coming weeks.

 77.
Happily, however, we seem to have pushed back a little bit against that outcome, and while the offense did its job admirably in providing run support, there’s really only one person we can thank for today’s respite, and that is of course Ryne Nelson. He’s been fantastic just about every time out since he’s settled back into the starting rotation, and today’s performance was his best yet.

 78.
How good was he today? Well, he retired the first sixteen batters he faced, in order, and had a perfect game rolling along through five and a third innings. In fact, he only needed 55 pitches to retire those sixteen batters. He leaned on his fastball once again, and that fastball hit 99 on a couple of occasions, and he was still hitting 97 on the radar gun while he was wrapping up his seventh inning of work. He only struck out five, but he didn’t walk a batter, and while he lost the perfect game, and the shutout, thanks to three singles in the top of the sixth, he still finished up seven innings with a pitching line of 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 0 BB on 86 pitches thrown. Not too shabby at all.

 79.
And yes, in case you were wondering, I’ve been sitting on that recap title and Jimmy Buffett reference for a very long time now, waiting for an appropriate occasion. I think this one fits.

 80.
So What Did the Offense Do?

 81.
Not much for the first two innings. The top of the order was stymied by Royals starter Michael Wacha in the first, and failed to get a run across in the second despite loading the bases on singles by Suarez and James McCann (today’s catcher) and an Alek Thomas walk.

 82.
We broke it open a bit in the bottom of the third, thanks to Geraldo Perdomo getting hit by a pitch up and in, Pavin Smith drawing a walk, and then successive RBI singles by Naylor and Suarez. 2-0 D-BACKS

 83.
Somewhat weirdly, Wacha bounced back in the bottom of the fourth to strike out the side, but resumed his rather sloppy outing by walking Perdomo and Smith (again) to start the inning. That actually ended his day, and brought in righty John Schreiber, who quickly disposed of Naylor and Suarez. That set the stage for Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., who grounded the first pitch he saw over the third base bag, down the line, and into the corner for a bases-clearing double:

 84.

 85.
So that was fun! Yay Lourdes! 4-0 D-BACKS

 86.
As noted above, Ryne Nelson gave them back a run in the top of the sixth to narrow our lead, but that was okay, not only because two runs would have been sufficient for the win, but because we had a bit more piling on to do. Old friend Taylor Clarke came out of the Kansas City bullpen for the bottom of the seventh, and retired Naylor and Suarez again. Lourdes had some more extra bases in him, though, and shot a liner the other way past a diving Jac Caglianone for a triple, and was driven in by McCann’s second hit of the day, this one a double to center. 5-1 D-BACKS

 87.
But wait, there was even more! Yet another guy came out the Royals’ ‘pen for the eighth, promptly hit Blaze Alexander (today’s second baseman, with Ketel Marte on a scheduled day off) with a pitch, advancing him to third with a wild and ill-advised pickoff attempt, and then surrendering the Diamondbacks’ sole dinger of the day to Randal Grichuk, who’d pinch hit for Pavin Smith in the sixth. Grichuk’s home run was noteworthy in that at first it appeared that it hit off the top of the wall and took a wildly improbable bounce that rolled out into the middle of the outfield, and was scored an inside-the-park home run:

 89.
Upon seeing the replay, it was clear that the ball bounded as far away as it did because it had in fact gone over the fence and rebounded off a chair in the pool area. I found that a bit sad, because inside-the-parkers are always more fun, at least when we get them. But still, runs are runs. 7-1 D-BACKS

 90.
Kevin Ginkel, meanwhile, pitched around a one-out double for a scoreless eighth (good job, Gink!) and Shelby Miller pitched a perfect ninth to end things on a happy note!

 94. Number of pitches thrown by Ryne Nelson, by inning: 9, 9, 12, 15, 9, 21, 11. Efficiency, thy name is Nelson.
 95.

 96.

 97. Number of pitches seen by Geraldo Perdomo over his five plate appearances: 35. Between all the different pitchers the Royals used today, Diamondbacks hitters saw 168 pitches by my count. Gerry, by himself, saw more than 20% of them. I love Gerry.

 105.
Ace of the Day: Ryne Nelson (pitching line above, +31.3% WPA)

 106.
And that’s pretty much your lot, because nobody else who appeared for the Diamondbacks rated higher than Geno’s 7.6%, which was presumably due to him driving in what was essentially the winning run in the third. The algorithm has no use for your insurance runs.

 107.
It was a broadly pleasant and busy Gameday Thread today, with 274 comments at time of writing despite another weirdly early Saturday start time. Precious few comments actually went Sedona Red, though, and most of the ones that did were not really game-relevant. The top vote-getter certainly was, so I’m happy to award this afternoon’s Comment of the Game to our Fearless Leader for this appreciation of the man of the hour:

 111.
Bravo indeed. Nelson pitched a helluva game.

 112.
Anyway. Rubber match tomorrow, but it may be sort of an odd one for us, because apparently Torey Lovullo has decided that he wants all his starters to pitch on an extra day’s rest as we complete the final march to the All Star Break. Thus, Anthony “Disco” DeSclafani will be getting the start for us, and going up against Michael Lorenzen for Kansas City. First pitch is scheduled once again for 1:10pm AZ time, and if it’s anything like today, it will be a fun time for Sneks fans. Hope you can join us.

 113.
As always, thanks so much for reading, and as always, go Diamondbacks!

 199.
Roster moves

 200.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

 201.

 202.

 203. Reinstated from 10-day injured list: OF Corbin Carroll (fractured left wrist)

 204.

 205. Optioned to Triple-A Reno following last night’s game: INF/OF Tim Tawa

 206.

 207.
Must admit, surprised to see Carroll back so quickly, only 17 days after his last appearance. When I heard the words “fractured left wrist”, I was expecting him to miss at least a month, then probably need some cautious rehab before being cleared to play. But one game in the Arizona Complex League was apparently good enough to get the green light. Hope it’s not a case of being rushed back. But then, the season is pretty much staring into the abyss anyway. We’re two below .500 for the first time since June 9, and if they don’t win today, will be behind the 2024 record for the first time since the opening series. And remember, last year we had a historic July + August, and STILL didn’t make the post-season.

 208.
It marks the end - for now - of Tawa’s time on the roster. It was a lovely story, seeing an 11th-round pick make his way to the major league, and initially it seemed like it could be a real Cinderella story. Through his first thirty games after making his debut on April 5, he was holding his own, and had a line of .247/.327/.459 for a .785 OPS in a super-utility role - mostly at second, but also in the outfield. But the league figured out that he should be fed a steady diet of breaking pitches, and the glow went off very quickly. Across his last 29 games, the line collapsed to .143/.176/.229, a .404 OPS with a K:BB of 26:3 in 75 PAs. I hope he can figure it out in AAA, and get another chance down the road.

 209.
The team certainly need a spark. They went 7-8 in Carroll’s absence, which is not terrible, but is certainly not good enough as they seek to improve their position in the wild-card standings. A three-game losing streak isn’t helpful, but the fact the D-backs have been outscored 22-10 across the defeats is more concerning. They certainly have not looked competitive in the last two games, trailing for the entire contest after one out in the top of the first on Thursday, and NO outs in the top of the first yesterday. Thet’s the very definition of uphill baseball, and outside of a brief spark of life in the bottom of the first last night, they simply have not looked like a play-off caliber club. Here’s to better tonight.

 266.
E-Rod got lit up like the Fourth of July.

Game Summary

 267.
Eduardo Rodriguez came in to this game riding a bit of a hot streak, but three batters in to the game, it was obvious that hot streak was over. Throughout E-Rod’s less than 5 innings of pitching tonight, he seemed to alternate between pitches nowhere near the zone and meatballs right down Broadway. The results of such a performance were predictable. 9 runs, 8 earned, and 3 home runs allowed. All of this came with the Royals riding a significant offensive skid, coming into Phoenix with a week long homer-less streak. Well, as was pointed out in the GDT, if your offense is having a rough go of it, Chase is a great place to ‘get right.’

 268.
The bullpen once again did an excellent job in a low leverage situation (for the year, D-Backs pitchers have a 3.07 ERA in low leverage vs a 4.73 ERA overall), not allowing a single run and never facing more than a single runner above the minimum in any inning. The offense, also did their best to keep this a low leverage affair. After getting 2 runs back in the first, the offense was silent, squandering an opportunity or two but mostly not able to string multiple hits together and build an inning. The Diamondbacks will have a short turnaround with the early game tomorrow, so thankfully we won’t have to dwell on this one very long.

 269.
The game result not being what we’d wanted, I still hope everyone enjoyed the fireworks and barbecue!

 278.
Outside the Box Score

 279.

 280.
Eduardo Rodriguez gave up a home run three batters in to the ball game. Who was to blame? The broadcasters, of course. Bert had just finished saying how the Royals had the least amount of homers in the league to date and hadn’t hit a home run in a week. The broadcaster jinx lives and I’ll never be convinced otherwise.

 281.
Ketel Marte got a leadoff single to start the offense for the Diamondbacks in the first, but it was about as well placed (read: lucky) as a ball could be. He popped up the first pitch about halfway down the right field line. It had an expected BA of .030 according to Baseball Savant, but it landed equally about a foot between the first baseman, right fielder and foul line.

 282.
The Diamondbacks played some small ball to cash in their first 2 runs of the game. After Ketel reached on a pop up, Domo walked and both runners were moved up 90 feet on a swinging bunt by Lourdes Gurriel. Domo and Ketel came home on the combo of a sac fly by Geno and groundball single through the right side of the infield by Josh Naylor (on the first pitch, of course).

 283.
In the second inning, the Royals loaded the bases in front of Bobby Witt on what should have been a sacrifice bunt. Blaze Alexander, starting at third for Geno tonight, fielded the ball cleanly but had to double pump on the throw when Ketel wasn’t near first trying to cover from his usual spot at second. Blaze did deliver a clean throw, but Ketel clanked it and everyone was safe. The merry-go-round continued from there as the Royals plated 3 runs in the inning.

 284.
The broadcaster jinx came back in a good way, though not as impactful as in the first inning, when Bert was recounting how Tim Tawa was grinding through an 0-for-24 stretch. Tawa promptly singled up the middle.

 285.
Diamondbacks squandered a scoring opportunity in the third when they had runners at the corners with no outs and the heart of the order at the plate. Geno hit a fly ball to medium right field and Domo tagged and started home before slamming on the brakes. They throw ended up about a third of the way up the third baseline, so I’d like to think that Domo would’ve been able to score on that, but Geraldo decided to wait it out and while staying at third with still less than 2 outs. Unfortunately, Naylor hit into a double play and no runs scored in the inning.

 286.
E-Rod nearly had Witt retired to lead off the fourth. Witt foul tipped a pitch into Herrera’s mitt, but Jose couldn’t hang on to it. Witt singled on the next pitch, then came home on a Sasquatch dinger.

 287.
Tim Tawa made a stupendous play to end the fifth and retire Bobby Witt for the first time in his first 4 at bats of the evening. A sinking line drive to straightaway center very well could have dropped in for an RBI single, but Tawa made a headlong dive and gloved the ball just inches above the turf.

 288.

 289.
Player of the Game

 290.
I’m deciding to leave this space for the player most responsible for the game’s outcome. In a win, that will continue to be the best player. In a loss? Well, tonight that person was Eduardo Rodriguez. With a loss probability of over 50%, he was singlehandedly responsible for the loss and then some. Looking at the numbers, he was still getting Whiffs and hitters to chase at close to his season-long numbers, but the EV was much higher than is typical for him. Michael McDermott made an AI-assisted observation in the GDT that it appeared E-Rod’s struggles tonight may be mechanically based. Maybe they were, and I hope if it was it is something minor and identifiable as the Snakes can’t afford any of our remaining healthy pitchers to be pitching at less than their peak for an extended period.

 291.
Comment of the Game

 292.
More participation in the GDT than I expected, with all the extracurricular activities happening this evening. A total of 269 comments at time of publishing. Only a couple Sedona red comments and both were introductory posts so no COTG tonight. Still, it was an enjoyable thread with some interesting sidebars (apparently India is playing a cricket series with England). Win or lose, the best place to watch a D-Backs game is right here on the Pit.

 293.
Coming Up

 294.
The Diamondbacks face the Royals in the second game of this interleague series tomorrow with a 1:10pm Saturday start time for the second week in a row. Ryne Nelson gets the ball for the good guys tomorrow and he’ll be opposed by right-hander Michael Wacha who is 4-8 and has a 3.62 ERA. Will we stop our losing skid?

 378.

 379.
Scheduling has been a little weird this week, with no day games during the week - even on get-away day for the Giants’ series yesterday. But there is an afternoon contest Saturday, as well as the usual on Sunday. I hope I remember to post the Gameday Thread tomorrow. I fully intend to be in the ICU suffering from an overdose of hot-dogs. Hope you all are having a pleasant Independence Day, whatever that may entail in your location. Me, being British, I’ll be sipping tea and sighing heavily. :) It feels weirdly like a Sunday, perhaps because we spent the morning in a very Sunday-like fashion. Which would mean, in bed, watching Miami Vice and Dark Winds.

 380.
Another series which could potentially define the Diamondbacks’ position as we approach the trade deadline... but probably won’t, just like the Giants’ series ended up leaving the needle in virtually the same spot. It was the very definition of two steps forward, two steps back. I kinda wish the team would simply be one thing or the other. Either make a surge, and give us something to cheer for the rest of the way, or flop and just leave the remainder of the schedule to be an exercise in determining who’ll be of use in 2026 and beyond. This year’s Diamondbacks appear to have commitment issues, in the areas of team competence and success. “Do or do not. There is no try,” to quote a great philosopher.

 381.
I’ll cut this short, because those pork products aren’t going to grill themselves, are they? Again, have a good day, stay safe, and here’s to a suitably pyrotechnic game.

 401.
But should it be buy or sell?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Arizona Diamondbacks fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

 402.
We are into July, and the trade deadline begins to loom, ever more prominently, at the end of the month. But the D-backs’ position in regard to their strategy for it remains up in the air. They are neither in a wild-card position that would encourage addition to the roster, nor are they so far out of it that selling is the obvious answer. The team’s position seems to change on a series by series basis, or as we saw in the Giants’ set just completed, even within them [We’re so back! Oh, wait: we suck again. Never mind...] So, earlier in the week we asked you to tell us what general strategy the Diamondbacks should adopt, with regard to this season’s trade deadline... Here are the results:

 403.

 404.
 405.

 406.
Brought to you by FanDuel

 407.
What stands out is an overwhelming desire for the team to do something. There may not be agreement as to what that should be. But with just three percent advocating going forward with the current roster, standing pat is not an option. On the hitting side, the team should get Corbin Carroll back off the injured list soon, and hopefully Gabriel Moreno will follow. But on the pitching side, the health issues are more of the “season ending” and/or “say hello to Dr. Neal ElAttrache” variety. You would also not believe how badly I butchered the good doctor’s name. Glad I decided to look it up. With the pitching the obvious issue, I can see the login behind the overwhelming rejection of “Hold.”

 408.
The overall inclination was to sell, by a margin of 59-38% - which is a clear majority, but not overwhelmingly one-sided. I can see both sides here: it feels as if adding to and stabilizing the bullpen could end up having a knock-on impact elsewhere. But on the other hand, there’s perhaps no team with a better collection of fungible assets who will be out of contract at the end of the season. Converting them into pieces that could help us in 2026 and beyond might be the best long-term answer. Though as Steak85 noted, 2027 - hopefully with a healthy Corbin Burnes on Opening Day - might be a better target for the team’s next window of contention. Here are a few other comments:

 409.

 410.

 411. Steak85 - “Definitely move any bullpen piece teams want, including Ryan Thompson, even though he’s under contract another year. Bullpens are so volatile, and people overpay for bullpen help every deadline.”

 412.

 413. DBacksEurope - “Weak sell, assuming the team will continue to dwindle like they have done until now.”

 414.

 415. AZNailgal520 - “Clean up with our known sluggers, relief pitchers and starting pitchers. Other teams will pay us well for these assets. I trust Hazen not to acquire a bunch of AA players for these guys.”

 416.

 417. SnakesAlive2023 - “You gotta cash in on all the valuable rentals we have this year for players who are major leaguers or close to it. This way I believe that we can still make a decent run by getting back to what made us so special in 2023.”

 418.

 419. BeTeaBaseball - “Weak sell - only move guys you can get something decent for in return. Moving players for salary relief will just turn fans away, I think, and cost you gate receipts.”

 420.

 421. piratedan7 - “We ought to be listening. In this day and age, with as competitive as it is, gotta restock and retool and heal up and this year should be a seller’s market.”

 422.

 443.
Offense is advantage Diamondbacks: In games through 30 June, the Diamondbacks’ 5.19 runs per game ranked third, while the Royals 3.28 runs per game ranked last in the Majors (Baseball Reference).

 444.
Bullpen Pitching is advantage Royals. In games through 28 June, the Royals ranked about average (9th in OBP, 12th in SLG, and 11th in wOBA) while the Diamondbacks ranked low (26th in OBP, 30th in SLG, and 27th in wOBA).

 445.
Both teams have a lot of blown leads. In games through 30 June, the Royals blew leads in 23 games while the Diamondbacks blew leads in 28 games. The largest blown lead for the Royals was 4 runs, while for the Diamondbacks it was 6 runs. My view is that in this series at least one game will be a comeback win.

 446.
All things considered, optimistically the Diamondbacks will win the series with one comeback win.

 447.
Royals to Watch.

 448.
Taylor Clarke, bullpen. He pitched for the Diamondbacks from 2019 to 2021. They granted him free agency, and the Royals signed him. This season through 29 June, his ERA is 3.68 in 22 innings.

 449.
Bobby Witt and Salvador Perez seem to be battling for home run king. Each of them had 5 home runs in June.

 450.
What to look for each day.

 451.
Friday, 6:40 PM MST.

 452.
Eduardo Rodriguez. In June, his ERA was 1.98 in 5 games. In his latest start against the Marlins, he allowed only 1 earned run in 5.1 innings.

 453.
Kris Bubic. In June, his ERA was 4.23 in 5 games. In his latest start against the Dodgers, he allowed 2 earned runs in 5.0 innings.

 454.
This matchup of starting pitchers is a big advantage Diamondbacks.

 455.
Saturday, 1:10 PM MST.

 456.
Ryne Nelson. On the positive side, he is seven years younger than the Royals starter (Wacha). In June, his ERA was 3.91 in 5 games. His last four starts each has an above average game score. In June, 3 batters he faced grounded into double plays.

 457.
Michael Wacha. In June, his ERA was 5.40 in 5 games. In June, only one batter he faced grounded into a double play.

 458.
This matchup of starting pitchers is a advantage Diamondbacks.

 459.
Sunday, 1:10 PM MST.

 460.

“The team is thinking of giving everyone an extra day of rest, starting with Gallen.” — Jack Sommers

 461.
Zac Gallen (maybe or maybe not). On the positive side, he is four years younger than the Royals starter (Lorenzen). In June, his ERA was 6.23 in 5 games. In his latest start, he was an entirely new pitcher, allowing only 1 earned run in 7 innings against the Giants. I’m certain his game score will be above 60 for the fifth time this season (albeit his fourth time was almost a month ago (3 June). Happily, an average performance (by whoever starts) could allow the Diamondbacks’ offense to win the game.

 462.
Michael Lorenzen. In June, his ERA was 6.32 in 5 games. In his latest start, he allowed 3 earned runs in 4.2 innings against the Mariners.

 463.
This matchup of starting pitchers is a toss-up.
