More problematic is that the swings in recent years have been much smaller.

They ask voters how they voted, what attitudes and issues were most important in compelling them to vote and if they affiliate themselves with a given party, along with their age, gender, race and highest level of education, according to the <a href="https://www.aapor.org/Education-Resources/Election-Polling-Resources/Explaining-Exit-Polls.aspx" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">American Association for Public Opinion Research</a>.

Five House and two Senate districts, all but one most recently in Republican hands, remain too close to call.
However, the Democrats stopped short of regaining full control. Ted Cruz, smashing fundraising records in the process.
Johnson lost to outgoing Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton in 2014 thanks largely to a 133,000-vote edge in the metro.

On Capitol Hill, <a class="local_link" href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/republicans" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Republican</a> <a class="local_link" href="http://washingtontimes.com/topics/senate/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Senate</a> leader Mitch McConnell <a href="https://twitter.com/RyanCostello/status/1060218980063985666" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">said</a> Democrats must decide how much “harassment” they want to pursue against Trump, while suggesting there could be limited opportunities to work across the aisle. Next year they will have far more power in USA politics, and the Republicans far less.
He told the nation he would love to work with Democrats – that it might, in fact, be a good thing that they won control of the <a class="local_link" href="http://washingtontimes.com/topics/house/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">House</a> of Representatives – but he refused to back away from any of his divisive campaign rhetoric. Republican Rep. Martha McSalley held a slim lead over Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat.
But in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams – who was hoping to become the first black female governor in the United States – refused to <a class="local_link" href="https://theweek.com/speedreads/806001/republican-ron-desantis-defeats-democrat-andrew-gillum-close-florida-gubernatorial-race" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">concede</a> as her Republican opponent Brian Kemp took a commanding lead after a bitter campaign. “Sorry about that, Mia”.
Love is trailing her Democratic opponent Ben McAdams, but her race hasn’t yet been called.
18 percent of Democrats wanted Trump’s tax returns reviewed, with 11 percent saying that was a priority. And in New Jersey, Democrats re-elected embattled Sen.
While this was not the case, the Democrat performance in the Senate was still somewhat positive.
Trump’s polarizing impact on the country has driven unusually high interest in the election, the first major political test of his presidency and one that will provide Democrats with clues to the strategy they’ll need to challenge him in 2020. Polls have already demonstrated that many of its policy views are <a href="https://www.dataforprogress.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">extremely unpopular</a>, but talking to a pollster is a considerably different proposition than casting a vote for someone who will exercise political power.
In Florida, six House seats are in play, and there are close and crucial battles for a Senate seat and the governorship.

It’s not at all clear that embracing Trump would have changed their <a href="http://fortune.com/2018/11/07/midterm-elections-healthcare-medicaid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">fortunes</a> given the mood of voters in those districts. He took to <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1060155917059219461" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Twitter</a> the morning after the split election outcome for the GOP to put Democrats on notice about their threats to investigate him and the administration.
U.S. President <a class="local_link" href="https://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/insidestory/2018/08/pope-francis-abuse-children-catholic-church-180826183013861.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Donald Trump</a> phoned Pelosi, who is expected to be the next speaker of the house late Tuesday evening to extend his congratulations over the Democratic victory in the House, according to Drew Hammill, who is Pelosi’s chief of staff.
History was working against the president in both the House and the Senate: The president’s party has traditionally suffered deep losses in his first midterm election, and 2002 was the only midterm election in the past three decades when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats. That could help Democrats because younger voters tend to lean their way.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, and are scheduled to close at 7 p.m.
So when you read that 800,000 more Republicans than Democrats cast a ballot in Texas during early <a href="https://uproxx.com/life/how-to-register-to-vote-on-election-day-states/" class="local_link" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">voting</a>, know that there’s a bunch of data and work that went into that estimate.
Voters across New York City say they are waiting hours on long lines and dealing with broken technology as they try to cast their votes on Election Day.

Campaigning is not allowed and you can not wear or display political materials such as campaign t-shirts, buttons or literature related to specific candidates, official political parties or ballot questions on the ballot that day. 7 a.m.to 7 p.m.
Any voter with an absentee ballot who has not yet mailed it should make arrangements to have the ballot delivered to their polling place or the municipal clerk’s office by Tuesday.

Some are considered vulnerable, as they are in states won by Mr Trump when he was elected in 2016. The message to many is simple: Vote like the election is up to you, because it is. His approval rating – <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2018/11/05/politics/cnn-poll-midterms-democrats-advantage/index.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">39% in the latest CNN poll</a> – is within the range where the President’s party typically suffers heavy losses on Capitol Hill.
Donald Trump remains the dominant figure in American politics.
But with turnout a key unknown factor and pollsters still unsure about the effect of Trump’s maverick style on voters, both parties admit that they may be in for nasty surprises. About a quarter supported him and nearly 40% said their vote was in opposition to the President.
The previously powerless Democrats now wield at least some power in the nation’s capital, which could mean two years of gridlock, unless the president and opposition party decide it’s in their self-interest to cooperate on certain issues. Only 1-in-5 decided in the last month and even fewer said they made up their mind in the last few days or the last week.

Trump is still trusting his feel for what voters want to hear. That’s a good sign for the Democrats.
“So I suspect he thinks of (his stance on immigration) as his greatest hit, and an approach that can help Republicans in advance of next week’s elections”, Galdieri added.
If Republicans win the House, they will continue to control Congress and the White House, allowing Trump to continue to press toward his legislative agenda as he has since he took office.

A CNN/SSRS poll released Monday <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/2018_generic_congressional_vote-6185.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">showed</a> Democrats with a 11-point lead over Republicans among registered voters on the generic congressional ballot, while a <a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/05/poll-generic-ballot-narrows-on-eve-of-midterms-960757" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">POLITICO/Morning Consult poll</a> showed Democrats with only a slight advantage in the generic ballot – 43 to 40 percent among registered voters. Democrats in the Senate who appeared poised to win easy re-elections – like Tim Kaine in Virginia and Sherrod Brown of OH – did so.
Democrats were hoping enthusiasm among their voters also could flip governor’s seats in Iowa and Kansas, as well as in the traditional battleground states of Michigan, Nevada, Ohio and Wisconsin.

In response, Republican Senator Jon Kyl has asked the Department of Homeland Security to help find ways to deal with the wave of migrants in the region.
President Trump, who has threatened to cut aid to <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Honduras" class="local_link" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Honduras</a> over the issue, thanked Mexico for holding back the group.
More than 300 people have taken up a government offer of a bus ride home to their country, police said.
