The Deacs add a local SG to the roster

Wake Forest is adding another high school prospect to their 2025 recruiting class, bringing in 3-star guard Jaylen Cross.

Standing at 6-4, Cross is rated as the 9th best player in the state of North Carolina and the 160th best player in the 2025 class by 247Sports. He had offers from ECU, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Tennessee, but chose to commit to Charlotte in November. He reopened his recruitment on April 16th and committed to Wake shortly afterwards.

Cross attended nearby Caldwell Academy in Greensboro, where he averaged 15.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game for his senior year. He shot 57% from the floor and 31% from beyond the arc, though just 86 of his 361 shot attempts were 3-pointers (23%). He helped Caldwell finish the season 26-9 overall and was a major part of their NCISAA 2A Championship run. In the championship game, Cross finished with 12 points, 19 rebounds, and 6 assists.

By my count, this brings the Deacs to 10 scholarship players on the roster for next season: the 4 returners in Spillers, Harris, Billiew, and Marion; the 2 freshmen in Cross and Carr; and the 4 transfers in Mason, Calmese, Colvin, and Schwieger. Ideally, Wake will get a backup center and another ball handler to fill out the roster.

Checkout some of Cross’s highlights below.

He was voted 1st Team All-NEC for his 986 yards rushing and 6 rushing touchdowns. For his career, he has run the ball 317 times for 1,768 yards (5.56 avg) and 11 touchdowns. He should add some depth to a running back room that has a clear one and two on the depth chart in Claiborne and Carney, but a bunch of question marks after that. We will likely see a lot more 2 back sets this season, so having depth at RB is definitely a good thing.

Calmese is a 6-2 rising senior who averaged 15.2 points, 3 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.6 steals for the Cougars last season. He started his career at Lamar in 2022-23, where he averaged 17.6 points per game and won Southland Rookie of the Year honors. He then transferred to Washington where he played just 11 minutes per game and scored a career low 4.1 points per game before transferring to nearby Washington State. He had a bounce back season at WSU, earning All-WCC Honorable Mention honors. His best game of the season for the Cougars came in a loss on the road at Gonzaga, where he scored 20 points on 9-14 shooting and added 8 assists, 2 rebounds, and 4 steals. Gonzaga was a top 10 KenPom team this season, so it’s great to see that he can perform against one of the top teams in the country.

From the little I have seen, Calmese is a very good driver and an excellent finisher around the basket. Over half of his shots last season came at the rim, and he scored on those drives at nearly a 60% rate. He is a capable 3-point shooter at 32% for his career, but he does not shoot from distance that frequently—almost 70% of his shots last season came from inside the arc. He appears to be a good passer and ranked top 100 in the nation with 4.4 assists per game, but he also averaged 3 turnovers per game. This seems like it is a very nice addition to the roster and fills a massive hole that Wake Forest had at the point guard position.

Check out some of Calmese’s highlights below.

The Deacs get a shooter

Wake Forest has added their 3rd player from the transfer portal this offseason in Washington shooting guard Mekhi Mason.

Mason is a 6-5 guard who spent 2 seasons at Rice before transferring to Washington last year. He started 20 out of 31 games for the Huskies this season, averaging 10 points and 1.4 assists in 24 minutes per game. The most important thing about Mason for Wake Forest is that he is a career 37% 3-point shooter who shot a career high 40% from beyond the arc last season—that would have made him the 40th best 3-point shooter in the nation if he had met the requirements (2.5 made 3s per game) to be on the leaderboard. Since the Deacs finished last season 359th out of 364 teams in 3-point percentage, anyone who can shoot from distance should be able to make a big difference next season. Mason’s best game for the Huskies this season came against Nebraska, where he scored 23 points and made 4 of his 6 3-pointers.

I won’t say Mason is a 3-point specialist, but it is clearly where he is at his best. He is much less efficient as a scorer from inside the arc—he shot just 45% from 2-point range last season and is a career 41% shooter from the floor. Despite that, last season was the first year of his career in which over half of his shots (55%) were 3-pointers. Accounting for the extra point from make a 3-pointer, Mason’s eFG% is 15 points higher when shooting from beyond the arc, so Wake Forest will probably want him to take a lot more 3’s and a lot less 2’s this season.

Check out some of Mason’s highlights below.

The Deacs are 33-0

After taking down #5 NC State in Raleigh 4-2, the Wake Forest Men’s Tennis team completed the programs first ever undefeated regular season, closing at an impressive 33-0. The Deacs also clinched their fourth ACC Regular Season title and locked in the #1 seed in the ACC Tournament.
I fully admit that I know very little about tennis, but it doesn’t take an expert to figure out that finishing a 33-match regular season with 0 losses is one heck of an accomplishment—no ACC team has pulled that off since UVA did over a decade ago in 2013. Alongside the perfect regular season record, the Deacs also won the ITA Indoor National Championship in February, their first since 2018, which probably makes this one of the most dominant college tennis teams in recent history. Hopefully the Deacs can continue their dominance through the ACC Tournament and into the NCAA Tournament.

Florida’s Championship Shows the Way for Wake Forest

The Gators have the blueprint

The 2024-25 basketball season was another let down for Wake Forest. The Deacs failed to make the NCAA Tournament yet again and now have to go about replacing nearly their entire roster. As they go into the portal to reload for next year, there is one team that they should try to emulate, and that is the Florida Gators. The Gators finished the season 36-4 overall, winning both the SEC Championship and their first NCAA Championship since 2007. On their way to winning both of those titles, six of their nine opponents were ranked in the top 10 in KenPom, making their run one of the most impressive in recent history. The thing that stood out to me about 2024-25 Florida Gators is that they accomplished all of that without a single top 100 recruit.

Of Florida’s key contributors from this season, only Alex Condon (10.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Thomas Haugh (9.8ppg, 6.1rpg) were recruited as freshmen. They were rated as the 214th and 185th best players in the 2023 class respectively. The rest of the Gators’ main players were under-recruited transfers from mid-majors.

Most Outstanding Player Walter Clayton Jr. (18.3 ppg, 4.2 apg) was an unrated prospect out of high school who only had offers from Iona, ECU, and Jacksonville. He transferred to Florida in 2023 after averaging 17 ppg at Iona and was rated as the 69th overall player and the 17th best point guard in the portal that year. He went on to score over 1300 points and dish out over 250 assists in 2 years with the Gators.

Alijah Martin (14.4ppg, 4.5 rpg) was also an unrated prospect out of high school. His offer list included FAU, Jackson State, McNeese, and Troy. He transferred to Florida in 2024 after averaging 11.9 ppg in 4 seasons at FAU. He was rated as the 129th best player in the transfer portal.

First Team All-Tournament guard Will Richard (13.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg) was a 3-star prospect and the 330th ranked player in the 2022 class. He played 1 season at Belmont—averaging 12 points per game—before transferring to Florida.

Rueben Chinyelu (6ppg, 6.6rpg) was the highest rated prospect out of all the Gators at 101st in the 2024 class. He transferred to Florida after 1 season at Washington State, where he averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds per game

I’m not going to go through every player, but I think the trend is pretty obvious. The question is: how did Florida put together an incredible season that culminated in a national championship with a roster full of unrated recruits and mid-major players? In an interview with Front Office Sports, Florida director of basketball strategy and analytics Jonathan Safir explained that their recruiting process included 3 basic steps:

Determine a player’s potential using advanced statistics to evaluate how a player will fit onto their team from a basketball stand point. Notably, Safir says that Florida doesn’t care at all about counting stats like points or rebounds.

The Gators bring the player in for a visit to see how he interacts with the team, school, and community. This shows the staff see how well the player will fit the culture of the program.

Compensation. The Gators give the prospect a range of how much they will pay. If the player wants more, Florida moves on. The most important thing from this whole process is what Safir says about Florida’s NIL payments: “We’ve never gotten a single player because we’re the highest bidder…We make sure our guys are taken care of financially, but it’s about so much more than that. We want guys with great attitudes, great work ethics, and guys who really want to be here.”

Wake Forest is never going to be able to outspend teams like Duke, UNC, Louisville, or any of the major programs simply due to the size of their respective fanbases. That is a fact that isn’t going away and is probably going to get much more obvious as the amount of money being spent on college sports continues to balloon out every single year. That being said, the Florida Gators this season have shown the way—that as long as you are recruiting and retaining guys who fit the team culture, want to be there, and will work their butts off, a team full of mid-major, 0-star high school prospects is capable of going toe to toe with anyone. Hopefully Steve Forbes is able to find some under the radar gems during the offseason.

Go Deacs!

Deacs add another from the portal

The Deacs have officially picked up their second commit of the portal cycle with Purdue wing Myles Colvin.

Colvin is a 6-5, 205-pound rising junior guard/forward who was rated as a 4-star player and the 63rd best prospect in the 2023 class. This season, he averaged 5.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in just under 18 minutes per game for the Boilermakers. He finished the season shooting just 37% from the floor and 31% from beyond the arc, however, his 41 made 3-pointers would have ranked 2nd on the team for the Deacs this season behind Hunter Sallis’s 43. Colvin’s best game of the season came against 23rd ranked Ole Miss, in which he scored 20 points on 8-11 shooting and made 3 of his 5 3-point attempts.

While his 31% shooting from beyond the arc was a career low, Colvin is still a 34% career shooter from beyond the arc, so hopefully he can get back up closer to that range next season—especially since 70% of his shots are 3-pointers. If he can get his shooting back up to an efficient level, his height and athleticism for a guard should be valuable for the Deacs next season. Colvin’s two seasons under future Hall of Fame coach Matt Painter should mean that the Deacs are getting a well-developed, high IQ player who is ready for a breakout season given the chance to start and play more minutes. Forbes has done very well with tall, athletic wing players coming off the bench at big time programs in the past, so we will have to wait and see if he can work his magic again.

Check out Colvin’s highlights below.

Schwieger is a 6-10, 230-pound forward who averaged 15.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game for the Beacons this season, leading the MVC in both blocks and rebounds. In his 2 seasons at Valpo, Schweiger has earned All-MVC Second Team, MVC Most-Improved Team, MVC Freshman of the Year and MVC All-Freshman team honors. He has great touch around the rim and has the ability to play with his back to the basket but also handles the ball well enough to face up and drive from the perimeter. Schwieger has also shown an ability to step outside and make 3-pointers—he is a career 33% shooter from downtown and has made 62 3-pointers in his collegiate career. He appears to be an extremely versatile player and an efficient scorer who can also protect the paint on defense.
