The Marvel star, who takes a turn as a villain in the latest <em>Mad Max </em>movie, wore a grey suit with matching black shirt and shoes as he wrapped his arm around Pataky, who sported a lengthy black sheer dress to the film&#39;s premiere.</p><p>The couple&#39;s twin sons, 10-year-old twin boys <a href="https://people.com/parents/chris-hemsworth-elsa-pataky-welcome-twin-sons-tristan-sasha/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Sasha and Tristan</a>, also joined their parents on the red carpet in Sydney.</p><p>Hemsworth and Pataky, a Spanish actress and model best known for her role in the <em>Fast &amp; Furious</em> movies, first met in 2010 when they were introduced by his talent agent. The pair <a href="https://people.com/celebrity/chris-hemsworth-is-married/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">married</a> in December 2010 just months after they went public with their relationship and have been going strong ever since.<br/></p><p>

  147. </figure><p><a href="https://people.com/tag/alec-baldwin/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Alec Baldwin</a> hasn&#39;t minced words when it comes to <a href="https://people.com/tag/paul-mccartney/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="2">Paul McCartney</a>!</p><p>On the Wednesday, May episode of the <em><a href="https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-our-way-with-paul-anka-an-145803075/episode/alec-baldwin-172488971/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">Our Way with Paul Anka and Skip Bronson</a> </em>podcast, the former <em>30 Rock </em>star, 66, opened up about the time he jokingly called the Beatles musician, 81, an &#34;asshole.&#34;</p><p>While discussing his experience living in Los Angeles, Baldwin spoke about a yoga class he&#39;d attend with a group of well-known friends.</p><p>&#34;I used to take a yoga class with<a href="https://people.com/tag/lorne-michaels/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1"> Lorne [Michaels]</a>, John Eastman, who&#39;s Paul&#39;s brother in-law, John Alexander, the painter, Lorne and I, there were five of us. We would take a yoga class. We called ourselves the &#39;yoga boys,&#39;&#34; he began.</p><figure>

He would do a handstand or a headstand and he had the most lithe body you&#39;ve ever seen — and back then he was in his late &#39;60s — and he was so fit. One time he does a headstand before he leaves, and he gets up and whispers to me, he goes, &#39;I&#39;m gonna go take my daughter to lunch. I&#39;ll see you guys later.&#39;&#34;<br/></p><p>The <em>Blue Jasmine</em> actor then joked he had some choice words for McCartney.</p><p>&#34;I looked up at him after he does the headstand and I go, &#39;You&#39;re an asshole.&#39; And I never thought I&#39;d call one of The Beatles an asshole, but he was just always showing us up with his physical skills! He was a very fit guy,&#34; Baldwin concluded.</p><p>

  164. </p><p>During the episode, the three-time Emmy winner also <a href="https://people.com/alec-baldwin-40-years-drug-free-past-addiction-8641497" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">opened up about being 39 years sober</a>.</p><p>“I don&#39;t discuss this a lot,” Baldwin admitted when asked about whether he drinks alcohol. “I discuss it every now and then when it makes sense. I&#39;m 39 years sober. I got sober Feb. 23, 1985.”</p><p>While discussing his move from his native New York City to L.A. in 1983, he told hosts <a href="https://people.com/music/paul-anka-masked-singer-broccoli/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Paul Anka</a> and Skip Bronson, “I had a white-hot problem every day for two years. I think I snorted a line of cocaine from here to Saturn.”</p><p>Baldwin said he and his friends “did one on the rings of Saturn, then we came home — we took it back home. I mean, cocaine was like coffee back then. Everybody was doing it all day long.”</p><p>He added: “Because I stopped doing drugs, my drinking increased, which they tell you is going to happen. And that did happen.   244. </p><p>The two men, who had been climbing the Cauthorn-Wilson Route on Cutthroat Peak, experienced an accident while rappelling. </p><p>Gilbert later told KIRO that the knot in the rappel ring came out of the system “and so Phillip fell with the rope all the way down to the bottom of the route.”</p><figure>

  249. </figure><p>The stuck Gilbert said that both he and the injured Bond had rocky talkies and were able to talk to each other. Then they contacted for help using a Garmin InReach beacon. Although they had to spend a cold night before being rescued, the two climbers had layers of Gore-Tex waterproof fabric as well as food and water.</p><p>

  253. </p><p>CCMR said that its climbers lowered Gilbert to the other team members so he could be warmed. </p><p>“Around 10:20 the weather cleared well enough that NAS Whidbey Island was able to conduct a successful hoist of the injured party.   373. </figure><p>Though Solène and Hayes embark on an international love affair as she accompanies him on his worldwide tour, things eventually take a turn during a vacation in the South of France. </p><p>As Solène joins Hayes and his bandmates by the pool, she gushes about his romantic gesture at Coachella when he dedicated their song “Closer” to her. However, the sweet moment is interrupted as his bandmate Oliver lets it be known that they do that with all the girls they have crushes on — or in Hayes’s case — women, hinting that Solène isn’t the first older woman he&#39;s been with.</p><p>The revelation causes Solène and Hayes to get into an argument, during which she lies and says she doesn’t feel for him what he feels for her. After a brief time apart, they eventually reconnect when Solène realizes she truly cares for Hayes. </p><p>However, their honeymoon period is short-lived as the media learns of their romance and their relationship is blasted in the news. In addition to dealing with the intense scrutiny about their age gap, Solène also struggles to grapple with the huge spotlight on her life and her family. Solène hits a breaking point as the spotlight begins to affect her daughter Izzy.</p><p>As Solène picks up Hayes at the airport, she lets him know she can’t continue with their relationship as her daughter comes first. He later shows up at her house, where they share one final kiss. However, before they part ways, Hayes leaves his watch at her house, suggesting maybe they can reconnect in five years when Lizzy is done with school. </p><p>

She was 26.</p><p>&#34;Madison passed away peacefully last night,&#34; fiancé Louis Risher tells PEOPLE in a statement on Thursday, May 2, adding that she was &#34;surrounded with love.&#34;</p><p>&#34;She is so special,&#34; Risher says. “I turned 27 yesterday, actually. I was holding her hand all day and that’s all I needed.&#34;</p><p>Baloy, whose candid confessions touched a cord with the millions of people who <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/&#64;fruitsnackmaddy" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">watched her videos on TikTok</a>, began experiencing stomach issues in the summer of 2022, she told PEOPLE earlier this year. She spent more than a year changing her diet in hopes of solving the problem, but on Feb. 22, 2023, she repeatedly vomited blood and began experiencing sensory issues. </p><p>

When she did, doctors discovered abnormalities in her large intestine that required emergency surgery. They later found numerous cancerous tumors pressing on her large intestine, as well.</p><figure>

His dad&#39;s best friend was one of the friends who helped the coop come about.&#34;</p><p>Setting out with a vision for something &#34;cute but practical,&#34; Mitchell&#39;s husband had the help of two friends with bringing the design to life.</p><p>&#34;The coop is cool because we were able to use primarily leftover building materials,&#34; she says, noting that the siding was from their home and the roof from their barn. I bottle-fed her until she was big enough to eat food on her own.&#34;</p><p>Their newly acquired raccoon quickly took a liking to the chicken coop, too.</p><p>&#34;As she got bigger, I would take her outside with me, and she would follow me around. I started letting her follow me to the chicken coop just because I knew that raccoons are known to kill chickens, so I wanted her to be familiar with them because I knew she would be hanging out close to our house,&#34; she explains.</p><p>&#34;Eventually, she started venturing up to the coop without me to eat the leftover scraps they didn’t eat. Sometimes, she goes into their coop to get out of the rain. Capshaw, who shares her kids Luke, 16, Eve, 13, Poppy, 11, and Josephine, 8, with husband Christopher Gavigan, offered Barrymore some advice, having already entered that stage with two of her kids.</p><p>Speaking about parenting, Barrymore, 49, says, &#34;My daughter who’s 12…who is about to turn 12, she really wants to be 16. Going on 25.”</p><p>&#34;So did we!” Capshaw exclaims.</p><p>“I know! Smartphones,&#34; the <em>Grey&#39;s Anatomy</em> actress explains. &#34;Everyone else has a phone. I want a phone.’ We waited until she was 13. And there was a contract and there was like, ‘What do I expect from you, what do you expect from me? What does this phone mean?’&#34;</p><p>Barrymore shares that it&#39;s been difficult for her to reckon with the fact that she also used to act out in the same ways as her daughter, recounting a conversation she recently had with Cameron Diaz.</p><p>&#34;And not to drop a name, but one of my best friends happens to be <a href="https://people.com/tag/cameron-diaz/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Cameron Diaz</a>.   588. </figure><p>Mallory Beach was driving home from work at a fashion boutique in Beaufort, S.C., when she saw a litter of puppies on the side of the road. “The strays always found her,” says her mother, Renee Beach, who was at home when Mallory asked her to head out into the cold on that February 2018 evening. Together, mother and daughter searched the woods for the abandoned puppies. “They had curled up in some straw underneath a pine tree to keep warm,” recalls Renee, 51. “Mallory was looking at me with tears in her eyes, saying, ‘We have to take them home.’ And so we did.”</p><p>A year after rescuing and finding new homes for all the puppies except for one that Mallory kept, the 19-year-old died in a boating accident caused by an allegedly drunk driver, Paul Murdaugh—who, two years later at age 22, was shot and killed alongside his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, 52, by the family’s notorious patriarch, convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, now 55. “It was my worst nightmare come true,” Renee says of losing her daughter amid the headline-making Murdaugh family scandal. “I guess over time I got used to it, but it isn’t easier. I miss Mallory, and I want her back.”<br/><br/>To those who knew her, Mallory will always be remembered for, among other interests, the care and attention she lavished on dogs, cats and even snakes. “She was like a mother to strays,” says Renee. “She was forever finding animals that were just abandoned.”</p><p>To keep her legacy alive, her family, who founded the animal rescue organization <a href="https://www.mals-palz.com/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1" rel="nofollow">Mal’s Palz</a> shortly after her death, are now raising funds to build a new animal shelter, adoption center and veterinary clinic for the people — and lost and abandoned pets — of Hampton County, S.C.</p><p>The existing shelter, says Renee, “is just beyond repair. It&#39;s not that big and it&#39;s just sad when you go in there.”</p><figure>

  598. </figure><p>In November, Hampton County voted on a resolution that would look into having a partnership with Mal&#39;s Palz in which the county would provide the land and Mal’s Palz would build the shelter.</p><p>“We desperately need a new facility,” says Christopher Inglese, Deputy Administrator of Community Services for Hampton County. “Mallory was an animal lover. And what better way to honor her love for animals and to honor her life by doing something in service to the people and to the animals.&#34;</p><p>Inglese adds, &#34;She was a special young woman, and we all just have a strong motivation to see Renee’s dream of turning tragedy into something that will be helpful and honor her daughter. We’re all just strongly motivated to make that a reality.”</p><figure>

She always had us laughing.”</p><p>It was five years ago, on Feb. 24, 2019, when Mallory and five friends boarded a boat piloted by Paul Murdaugh, then 19. Authorities would later say Paul had a blood-alcohol level at least three times the legal limit when he crashed the boat into a bridge, throwing Mallory overboard. It would be an excruciating seven days of waiting before Mallory’s body was found in a marsh five miles from the crash site. Although Paul was charged with boating under the influence causing death, <a href="https://people.com/crime/alex-murdaugh-claims-sons-killer-angry-fatal-2019-boat-crash-threats/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">he and his mom were killed</a> by Paul&#39;s father, <a href="https://people.com/crime/murdaugh-family-murders-everything-to-know/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="2">Alex Murdaugh</a>, before Paul’s trial was to begin. </p><figure>

  684. </figure><p>Most Americans haven’t had their homes tested for the presence of <a href="https://people.com/health/usa-hockey-rachael-malmberg-says-radon-gas-caused-her-stage-4-lung-cancer/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">radon</a>, an odorless gas that causes <a href="https://people.com/tag/cancer/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="2">cancer</a>.</p><p>Radon is an “invisible radioactive gas” that’s naturally released from rocks and soil. According to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/radon/index.html" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">Centers for Disease Control</a>, it&#39;s the second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarette smoking.</p><p>The gas can get into homes through small cracks, the CDC says — but about 75% of Americans haven’t had their homes tested for the presence of the gas, according to a report issued by <a href="https://james.multimedia-newsroom.com/index.php/2024/04/11/survey-half-of-americans-are-unaware-of-a-cancer-causing-threat-in-their-home/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center</a>.</p><p>Radon causes 20,000 lung cancer deaths a year because its radioactive particles “can damage the cells that line the lung,” the <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/radon/radon-fact-sheet" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">National Cancer Institute</a> says.</p><figure>

  689. </figure><p>“Anyone with lungs can develop lung cancer, and as a community we should be aware and concerned about radon exposure because it’s thought to be one of the leading causes of lung cancer in never-smokers — and there is something we can do reduce our risk,” Dr. David Carbone, a thoracic medical oncologist and director of the OSUCCC – James Thoracic Oncology Center, said in a statement. </p><p>“There are relatively simple tests to measure radon in the home and actions to reduce radon exposure.”  </p><p>

  691. </p><p>The CDC says you <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/radon/radon-test.html" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">should test your home,</a> especially if you’re doing any renovations or spend a lot of time in a lower level, like a basement.</p><p>You can contact your <a href="https://www.epa.gov/radon/epa-map-radon-zones-and-supplemental-information" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">state’s radon office</a> for a list of inspectors — however, as the CDC notes, you can also purchase a test at a local hardware store, on online.</p><p>“Radon is naturally found in outdoor air at very low levels and some radon will always be in your indoor air,” the CDC says, adding that “according to EPA, the average radon level in American homes is about 1.3 pCi/L” — or 1.3 units of picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air.</p><p>If the test shows radon levels higher than 4 pCi/L, you will need to install a radon reduction system.</p><figure>

  696. </figure><p>“Nearly one out of every 15 homes in the United States has high radon levels,” the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/lung/basic_info/risk_factors.htm" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">CDC</a> says.</p><p>“Your children playing in your basement or <a href="https://people.com/health/no-radioactivity-found-at-new-jersey-high-school-94-people-developed-brain-tumors-study-shows/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">going to schoo</a>l today, exposed to unknown levels of radon, could be at risk for developing lung cancer 10, 20, 30 years from now,” Carbone said in the statement. </p><p>

  725. </figure><p><a href="https://people.com/tag/shaquille-oneal/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Shaquille O’Neal</a> credits his career entirely to the support of his parents, Lucille O’Neal and Phillip Harrison.</p><p>When the legendary <a href="https://people.com/tag/nba/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">NBA</a> champion was born in 1972, his mother Lucille was still a teenager and his biological father, Joseph Toney, was headed down a bad path. Shortly after Shaq’s birth, Joseph was sent to prison and Lucille was left to raise him on her own.</p><p>“Lucille O’Neal is my best friend. My mom has always, always, been there for me,&#34; Shaq wrote in his memoir <em>Shaq Uncut: My Story</em>. &#34;She learned to be tough at a very young age. Life wasn’t always very kind to her, so she did her best to protect me.&#34;</p><p>After raising Shaq as a single mother for several years, she met Phillip, her future husband. From that moment on, Phillip took on a father figure role in Shaq’s life, later sharing in an interview with <a href="https://andscape.com/features/shaq-to-biological-father-i-dont-hate-you/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">Andscape</a> that he saw his son as his “flesh and blood from the beginning.”</p><p>Together, Lucille and Phillip raised Shaq and his three siblings, keeping them on the straight and narrow — even if it took some tough love. Phillip encouraged Shaq’s basketball career and told him to keep pushing when things got hard, eventually leading to his prolific career in the NBA.</p><p>“He’s the guy that told me one day that I would be here,” Shaq said while <a href="https://twitter.com/Ballislife/status/1495559879657930760" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">speaking during All-Star Weekend</a> in 2022. &#34;He takes me to Madison Square Garden ...   730. </figure><p>Shaq’s mother, Lucille, and his biological father, Joseph, met as teenagers. They had been dating for three years, and Lucille had recently graduated from high school when they became pregnant. At the time, Joseph was heading down the wrong path after getting involved with illegal activities.</p><p>Shaq was born on March 6, 1972, and while Joseph was there when he was born, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-jun-11-sp-plaschke11-story.html" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">per the <em>Los Angeles Times</em></a>, it wasn’t long before Lucille was on her own. When Shaq was still an infant, Joseph was sent to federal prison on a conviction involving fraudulent checks.</p><p>&#34;My mom, Lucille O’Neal, was on her own when she had me. She was seventeen years old when she got pregnant. I never knew why my mother gave me a Muslim name,&#34; Shaq wrote in <em>Shaq Uncut</em>, referring to his full name, Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal.</p><p>He continued, &#34;I guess it might have been because she felt like an outcast, or thought nobody loved her. Shaquille meant ‘little one’ and Rashaun meant ‘warrior.’ I was her little warrior. It was going to be me and my mom against the world.&#34;</p><h2>Joseph was not involved in Shaq’s upbringing</h2><p>After Joseph was sent to prison, Lucille and Shaq only had each other. Joseph did not have any communication with the family, losing touch while he was locked up. Though it was difficult for Lucille, she says she did whatever she could to ensure Shaq was taken care of.</p><p>“Shaquille and I grew up together. I learned about sacrificing what I wanted so my son could get what he needed,&#34; Lucille told <a href="https://memphisparent.com/health/shaquille-oneals-mother-lucille-oneal-talks-to-memphis-parent-about-her-personal-journey/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1" rel="nofollow"><em>Memphis Parent</em></a>. &#34;I went on welfare for a time, and then got a job. Since Shaquille’s father wasn’t around, I had to stand on my own financially.&#34;</p><p>Although Joseph told the <em>Los Angeles Times</em> he never met Shaq as a child, the basketball star recalls first seeing his biological father when he was around 7 years old. In his memoir, Shaq says he began to have questions about his father, and Lucille thought it would be a good time to introduce them. By then, Lucille had remarried Phillip, whom Shaq saw as his father figure.</p><p>“The day I went to meet him he was nice enough,&#34; the sports analyst wrote. &#34;He said, ‘What’s up? Hey kid, how are you doing? I’m your daddy.’ I wasn’t really sure what to think. I had this other guy at home who sure acted like my daddy. Phillip Harrison had given me a place to live, some toys, and even though I got in trouble a lot, I was cool with my life.&#34;</p><p>He continued, “When you are a kid, all you know is what you’ve got. After I met my ‘real’ daddy, I went home with my mom to Phillip, who as far as I was concerned was the only father I was going to pay any attention to.”</p><p>After their initial meeting, Shaq would be estranged from Joseph for decades.</p><h2>Lucille married her husband Phillip when Shaq was young</h2><figure>

  735. </figure><p>When Shaq was a toddler, his mother Lucille met her future husband Phillip while working at a local city hall. The couple began dating, and Phillip, who had two daughters of his own, raised Shaq as his own from the time he was 2 years old. Lucille and Phillip later married and eventually welcomed a son.</p><p>“I respect a man that walks into a city hall, meets a lady. The lady has a son, he says, ‘So what?’ He takes the lady and his son in and brings in his two daughters, and they have a family, and they raise a family. I respect the man,” Shaq shared on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCXfzj1UEEg" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1"><em>In Depth with Graham Bensinger</em></a> podcast.</p><p>Growing up, Phillip took care of Shaq and was the primary disciplinarian in his life. He credits Phillip with driving him to become better in all aspects of life.</p><p>“The term stepfather I don’t really use. I use father. He’s the guy who made me who I am,&#34; Shaq added. &#34;I’m in a big old house because of that man. I’m still relevant five years after playing [basketball] because of that man. I’m responsible because of that man. ... I owe everything to him and him only.”</p><h2>Lucille and Phillip worked hard to provide for Shaq and his siblings</h2><figure>

  740. </figure><p>When Shaq was growing up, his family struggled financially — although he says he was mostly unaware that they were poor when he was a child. While Phillip worked hard to support the family with his military career and other side jobs, they still had to move often.</p><p>“I didn’t know I was poor. I guess I should have,” Shaq wrote in <em>Shaq Uncut</em>. “We moved all the time because we couldn’t make the rent. My mom tried to feed a young family of six on Chicken à la King out of a can. We ate a lot of franks and beans and noodles. Lots of noodles.&#34;</p><p>He added, &#34;I was hungry all the time, but I figured that was just because I was so damn big. Every morning that I woke up it seemed like I had grown another couple of inches.”</p><p>As Shaq got older, he says his father was more transparent about their financial issues, even telling him once that he couldn&#39;t buy Christmas presents. As a teenager, Phillip told Shaq that he had to get a job if there were things he wanted, and the basketball star decided to get a job at Burger King.</p><p>While he didn’t last long at the fast food joint, he ended up working for his dad as a caretaker for his younger siblings.</p><p>

  742. </p><h2>Phillip’s military career brought the family to Germany</h2><p>While Shaq spent the beginning of his childhood in New Jersey, things began to get dangerous in the family’s neighborhood, and they relocated to Hinesville, Georgia. When he was 10, Phillip came home and announced they were moving after he got a job at Fort Stewart.</p><p>Though he didn’t want to leave his friends at the time, Shaq says he now completely respects his father’s decision to settle them on the army base.</p><p>“I respect the guy that says, ‘You know what? We got to get my family out of Newark. The drugs are bad, guys are starting to shoot and kill. Let’s move to Georgia. Let’s get a house, let’s get a land,” Shaq said on the <em>In Depth with Graham Bensinger</em> podcast.</p><p>After living in Georgia for a few years, Phillip’s military career took the family to Europe, where they lived on an army base in Germany. It was there that Shaq says he began honing his basketball skills.</p><p>“When I first went, I hated my father for taking me out of the country ... But when I got to Germany, I was able to focus on my craft,&#34; Shaq told <a href="https://soundcloud.com/nypl/shaquille-oneal-on-germany-rap-slam-dunks" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">The New York Public Library</a>, adding that he didn&#39;t risk getting into trouble in the country because if he &#34;[messed] around,&#34; it would be &#34;all over.&#34;</p><p>After spending time in Germany, the family later relocated to Texas.</p><h2>Phillip helped teach Shaq how to play basketball</h2><figure>

  747. </figure><p>When Shaq was about 8 years old and on his way to being 6 feet tall, Phillip began showing him the basics of basketball. According to <em>Shaq Uncut</em>, he taught him “how to box out and shoot” with his “elbow tucked in the right way” and gave him books about basketball, including one about <a href="https://people.com/tag/kareem-abdul-jabbar/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Kareem Abdul-Jabbar</a>’s life.</p><p>While Shaq admits he initially struggled with the sport and couldn’t dunk for years, Phillip continued encouraging him. Then, when he was a teenager, Phillip took him to a Knicks basketball game that changed his life. After watching Julius Erving play, Shaq decided that was what he wanted to do with his life.</p><p>“That’s when I said, ‘Okay, that’s what I want to do.’ I’m a changed man. From that day on, no more juvenile delinquent, tried better in school, stayed out of trouble. They never had a problem out of me after that day,” Shaq said on the <em>In Depth with Graham Bensinger</em> podcast.</p><p>He continued, “When Dr. J went baseline and the crowd went crazy, I was like, ‘I want that. I want people to scream my name. That’s what I want.’ So from that day on, I came, and I practiced every day. Still wasn’t any good. Practice, practice, practice.”</p><p>Lucille was also a major supporter of Shaq’s basketball career, attending every game she could from the time he was 6 years old, knowing how important it was to be visible to her son.</p><p>“They want to be able to look into the stands and know you&#39;re there,” she told the <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/shaq-s-mom-lucille-o-neal-raising-nba-giant-t155100" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1"><em>Today</em> show</a>. “They want to see you. They don&#39;t have to say anything; they know you&#39;re there.”</p><h2>Shaq used his first big paycheck to pay his parent’s debts</h2><p>In 1992, Shaq was getting ready to enter the NBA draft when he got his first big check from an endorsement for Classic Car. He spent a portion of the $1 million check on his parents, paying off their debts.</p><p>“The first thing I did was take care of some matters on the home front. Both my mom and my dad had terrible credit, so I took out $150,000 and paid that off. I’m rich. I can do these things,” Shaq shared in <em>Shaq Uncut</em>.</p><p>He went on to buy both of his parents new Mercedes Benz cars, and once he was playing professionally, he bought his parents their own home and hired them to work for him, according to an interview with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXMpMHPgk7I" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1"><em>Drink Champs</em></a>.</p><h2>Lucille overcame alcoholism</h2><figure>

  752. </figure><p>As Shaq’s career progressed, his mother found herself dealing with alcoholism.</p><p>She admits that she was spending her son’s money to buy drinks and eventually realized that she had gone down the wrong path and needed to turn her life around.</p><p>“I got tired of being sick, of having hangovers in the morning. I began to lose my memory. And I didn’t want to embarrass Shaquille. I didn’t want people to see Shaq’s mother as a drunk,” Lucille told <em>Memphis Parent</em>.</p><p>She continued, &#34;The world was paying more attention and I needed to give them something positive to look at. You have to make up your mind that you’re going to better yourself. I wasn’t a bad mother, but I had demons. I needed to be delivered from alcohol.”</p><h2>Lucille and Phillip divorced</h2><p>After over two decades together, they went their separate ways. While not much is known about their split, in 2015, Lucille told <em>Memphis Parent</em> that she had been single for “15 years.&#34;</p><p>Following their divorce, Shaq helped his mother go back to school. She enrolled in an adult education program at Bethune-Cookman University, where she graduated with a degree in business administration in 2003.</p><p>Lucille then attended the University of Phoenix, where she got a master&#39;s in organizational management two years later.</p><h2>Phillip died in 2013</h2><figure>

  757. </figure><p>In September 2013, Shaq’s father, Phillip, died following almost a decade of health issues, including diabetes and hypertension.</p><p>Shaq admits that he was devastated by the loss of his father, and although he had taught him never to cry, the basketball player openly grieved. Looking back, Shaq says he realized he didn’t say thank you enough to his father.</p><p>“My father taught me not to really cry and be sad, so when he passed away, I really let it go because I didn&#39;t get to tell him thank you enough,” he shared on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtraIONnha0" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1"><em>Shaq Life</em></a>.</p><p>His father also left him in charge of the entire family, making his son promise to care for his mother and siblings. Shaq has proudly upheld that vow, explaining that his father instilled in him that it was &#34;a man’s job to protect and provide.”</p><p>“Because of you Sgt Philip a Harrison I fulfilled all my dreams, I kno you resting easy big man. Can’t thank you enough, and don’t worry I got the family,” Shaq wrote <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CD7s_ZrlmB5/" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">on Instagram</a> in 2020.</p><h2>Shaq was estranged from Joseph until 2016</h2><p>Throughout his life, Shaq’s biological father, Joseph, tried to reach out to him. When he was released from prison while Shaq was still a child, Joseph decided with Phillip that it would be best for him to take a step back while he was still working on himself.</p><p>“When he came back from prison, I saw him in the park, and we agreed that because he already had another child, I would be Shaquille’s dad and take care of him,” Phillip told the <em>LA Times</em>. “We even shook hands on it.”</p><p>Although Joseph gave up his parental rights, he says he didn’t think he would never see his son again. As Shaq got older, Joseph tried to reach out through people who knew his son, but Phillip stopped him, hoping to protect the rising athlete.</p><p>Shaq eventually avoided seeing Joseph when he attended one of his basketball games. In 1994, he released a song called “My Biological Didn’t Bother,” condemning Joseph for leaving the family. Shaq later explained that he didn’t want to meet his biological father out of respect for Phillip.</p><p>“That will probably never, ever happen,” Shaq said in 2002, per Andscape. “Nothing personal. Philip Harrison raised me, made me who I am today. It would be disrespectful of him to meet somebody else and call somebody else my father. I could never do that, no matter what the circumstances are.”</p><p>When Phillip died, Shaq says he reconsidered meeting Joseph in the hopes of personal healing. In 2016, the pair finally met and had the chance to discuss their separate paths. After sharing an embrace, Shaq assured Joseph that he wasn&#39;t upset with him.</p><p>“I don’t judge. He had some problems when he was young. I don’t judge him. I don’t fault him,” Shaq <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmwLxAu734c" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="externalLink" data-ordinal="1">later told Dr. Phil</a> in 2019. “My thing now is just as long as we’re both here, we just get to know each other. ... I’m not the judge and the jury.   798. </p><p>Blanchard served eight years of a 10-year sentence for conspiring to murder her mother, 48-year-old Dee Dee Blanchard, with her then-boyfriend <a href="https://people.com/where-is-nicholas-godejohn-now-8420371" data-component="link" data-source="inlineLink" data-type="internalLink" data-ordinal="1">Nicholas Godejohn</a>. Godejohn carried out the murder before being convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.</p><p>&#34;Let my actions match my words. And we&#39;ll go from there,&#34; Blanchard said when she decided to leave social media.</p><p>&#34;I definitely have a good support system,&#34; she continued. &#34;And I think I&#39;m just now starting to get around to listening to my inner self instead of all the noise that&#39;s been on social media. The season 2 cast includes: Chris Curcuru, 58 (Summerland, Calif.), Brad Gessner, 62 (Youngstown, Ohio), Mackenzie Rubish, 37 (Fallbrook Calif.), Ronald “RJ” Winter, 32 (Chico, Calif.), Nicole Aufderhar, 37 (Walker, Minn.), Ruoyun Zheng, 24 (San Francisco), Victoria Walters, 34 (Philadelphia) and Jennifer Reyes, 45 (New York City).<br/></p><p>&#34;The standard last year was so good, so I&#39;m expecting the same this year,&#34; explains Hollywood. &#34;America&#39;s such a large country that you can have such an eclectic mix of bakers.&#34;</p><figure>
