BREAKING: Badgers land a commitment from transfer forward Austin Rapp

The Badgers have their second commitment in the transfer portal.

The Wisconsin Badgers have secured a commitment from Portland transfer forward Austin Rapp.

Named the WCC Freshman of the Year in 2024, Rapp enjoyed a solid freshman year at Portland, averaging 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for Portland this season, while shooting 35.2 percent from three.

Rapp was on a visit to Wisconsin earlier this week before naming the Badgers as one of his finalists alongside Michigan, Oregon, Clemson, and Iowa. Ultimately, Wisconsin won out, landing their second transfer portal commitment of the cycle, following Virginia’s Andrew Rohde.

Rapp adds to a frontcourt that lost Steven Crowl, Carter Gilmore, and Markus Illver this offseason, joining Nolan Winter and Xavier Amos as the leaders of the group now.

Standing 6’10, 230 pounds, Rapp could play either the power forward or center positions, but seems more suited as a stretch four, which Wisconsin used heavily in 2024.

Initially from Melbourne, Australia, Rapp has three years of eligibility remaining, which will be a boost to Wisconsin’s frontcourt, adding youth and depth to the room.

Wisconsin continues to be active in the transfer portal, but now has landed two of their targets with Rapp and Rohde in the fold for 2024-25.

Two key role players are confirmed coming back for the Badgers.

Wisconsin Badgers redshirt freshman guard Jack Janicki is returning for the 2025 season, he announced on Friday.

He joins sophomore Nolan Winter as the players who have publicly announced their return to Wisconsin, while sophomore guard John Blackwell announced his intentions to enter the 2025 NBA Draft, while maintaining his college eligibility.

Janicki stepped into a bigger role in 2024 after redshirting his freshman season, playing 11.4 minutes per game as a reserve guard off the bench. He’s now set for an even bigger role in 2025, as Wisconsin is losing guards Max Klesmit, John Tonje, Kamari McGee, Camren Hunter, and Daniel Freitag.

Janicki averaged 1.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game, but had some key outings during the regular season, stepping up in big games. He scored nine points in 19 minutes of action in Wisconsin’s 103-88 win over Arizona early in the season.

Later, he was key in Wisconsin’s 94-84 win over Purdue, stepping up and playing 17 minutes, scoring 11 points and hitting three threes. He also came up big in Wisconsin’s 74-67 win over Minnesota, playing 22 minutes as Max Klesmit nursed an injury.

The Badgers are active in the transfer portal, landing Virginia wing Andrew Rohde on Thursday. They’re still looking for more additions to next year’s roster, but Janicki is set in stone and will return for a third year in Madison.

The college basketball season is coming to an end on Monday.

The college basketball season is finally coming to an end, as the two Final Four games are played tomorrow, while the National Championship Game comes on Monday evening in San Antonio.

While the Wisconsin Badgers bowed out early in the Round of 32, March Madness has still had its moments, with each of the Final Four teams being some of the best ever, efficiency-wise, all of time.

With just two more days of college basketball left, we ran our national poll to gauge who the public believes will win the National Championship in 2025, and the results were certainly interesting.

Duke was the overwhelming favorite to win the title at 55 percent, with no other team reaching a 20 percent vote. Interestingly enough, Houston earned the second-most votes at 17 percent, so a majority of fans believe that the winner of the Duke vs. Houston game will ultimately end up as the champion.

Auburn and Florida each had equal voting percentages to win at 14 percent, coming behind the Blue Devils and the Cougars.

Looking at the national odds, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, Florida is a 2.5-point favorite over Auburn, while Duke is a 5.5-point favorite over Houston. Duke currently has the best odds to win the National Championship at -115, while Florida is second at +315. Houston comes after that at +430 odds, while Auburn is fourth at +550 odds.

The Final Four tips off at 5:09 p.m. Central on Saturday in San Antonio, as Florida will take on Auburn first before Duke and Houston are scheduled to tip off at approximately 7:49 p.m. Central.

Badgers starter announces return to program after breakout season

The Badgers are getting one guaranteed starter back in 2025.

The Wisconsin Badgers have seen a lot of movement this offseason, as six seniors, including three starters, are departing the program. In addition, three others (Daniel Freitag, Camren Hunter, and Chris Hodges) are entering the transfer portal.

Then came the news of sophomore guard John Blackwell entering the 2025 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility, adding a fourth starter and another potential departure to the mix.

But, the fifth and final starter is guaranteed to return, as sophomore forward Nolan Winter announced that he’ll be back in 2025, seemingly signing a new deal as well.

Nolan Winter is returning. Seems like he was taken care of by the #Badgers. https://t.co/5Y8piWr8wJ
— Bucky’s 5th Quarter (@B5Q) April 4, 2025

Winter had a breakout season as a sophomore, starting all 37 games and averaging 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per game as the team’s power forward.

That came after a freshman year where Winter was thrown into the fire as the backup center, playing 9.4 minutes a contest in 36 games behind Steven Crowl.

Winter was the team’s most efficient player offensively, shooting 56.4 percent from the field, while also hitting 35.8 percent from deep as a stretch-four.

Wisconsin is actively in the transfer portal, looking to complete next year’s roster. They landed their first transfer on Thursday with Virginia wing Andrew Rohde. But, it’s the returners that are set to be the core for the Badgers, and one is in the fold with Winter, while another two key players are expected back: John Blackwell and Jack Janicki.

Winter is expected to assume the starting power forward spot once again in 2025, where he’ll look to build off his breakout season and become a frontline starter for the Badgers.

The Badgers have their first transfer of the cycle.

The Wisconsin Badgers have landed their first transfer of the offseason, as Virginia Cavaliers guard Andrew Rohde has committed to the program, he announced.

Rohde, a 6’6, 200-pound wing, is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He averaged 9.3 points and 4.3 assists as a junior in 2024, shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from three.

Rohde started his career at St. Thomas, where he averaged 17.1 points and 3.6 assists per game as a freshman, shooting 44.8 percent from the field.

He elected to enter the transfer portal after his freshman season, where the Badgers initially showed interest, but headed to Virginia, where he was a two-year starter as a sophomore and junior.

Now, the senior wing is coming back to his home state for his final year of eligibility and provides the Badgers with a starting-caliber wing to play alongside guard John Blackwell.

Rohde’s shooting has been his calling card, and his Wisconsin roots were a big factor for the Badgers coaching staff, who had been looking to replace the void left by former Wisconsin natives Max Klesmit, Kamari McGee, and Carter Gilmore.

Rohde is the first transfer to commit to the Badgers this offseason, and fills a big hole as Wisconsin continues to be active in the transfer portal.

A Badgers guard is testing the draft waters this offseason.

The Wisconsin Badgers are fully entrenched in the transfer portal currently, but got some major news regarding one of their players on Thursday, as star guard John Blackwell announced his intentions to enter the 2025 NBA Draft.

Blackwell will maintain his college eligibility and guaranteed a return to Wisconsin if he does pull out of the draft.

“Dear Badger Nation, After speaking with Coach Gard, the coaching staff, Life Sports Agency, and my family, I’m excited to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft while maintaining my collegiate eligibility,” Blackwell wrote in a post. “My goal has always been to play in NBA, and going through the process will take me one step closer to my dream.

“I’d like to give glory to God as without him I wouldn’t be in this position. I’m extremely thankful for my family for their unwavering support and guidance during this process. I also want to thank my teammates, coaches, and the support staff for challenging me every day to become a better person and player. Finally, I’d like to thank our fans for their incredible energy and enthusiasm. They help make the Kohl Center such a special place to play.

“If I decide to wait another season before playing at the next level, I plan to come back to play for Coach Gard in Madison. Once a Badger, always a Badger!”

Head coach Greg Gard wrote a message of support, noting his guard’s desire to play in the NBA and the value of gaining feedback from NBA personnel.

“John and I have talked many times about his dream to play in the NBA and our staff and I fully support his decision to declare for the NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility at Wisconsin,” Gard said.

“John has been a tremendous player for our program the last two seasons and has the drive to be the best player on the floor, wherever he is playing. This is a win-win opportunity for John to receive feedback from NBA personnel while retaining the ability to play for our program next fall.”

Blackwell is expected to be one of the team’s top returners in 2025 alongside forward Nolan Winter, providing building blocks for Wisconsin to work around as they attack the transfer portal.

Now, the guard is looking to explore his professional opportunities, but is keeping his options open, while the guarantee of a return to Madison if he stays in college is a good sign for the Badgers.

May 29th is the last day for college players to withdraw from the NBA Draft and maintain their college eligibility.

A former Badger is moving to another school once again.

It’s officially transfer portal season, which usually leads to a frenzy at this time of the year with over 1,000 college basketball players looking for a new home next year. One of those players is former Wisconsin Badgers star A.J. Storr, who is entering the transfer portal for the third consecutive season.

Storr, who transferred to the Kansas Jayhawks last offseason, struggled in 2024, averaging just 6.1 points per game while shooting 38.4 percent from the field and 29.1 percent from three in a reserve role.

That came after he had a breakout campaign at Wisconsin in 2023, leading the way with 16.8 points, earning All-Big Ten honors with the Badgers in his lone season there.

Storr is now looking for his fourth school in four years after starting his collegiate career at St. John’s. But, looking deeper than his college years, there is an even deeper pattern with Storr.

It will now be the eighth straight year that Storr is searching for a new school, dating back to his high school career. Here’s Storr’s full playing history:

High School

Thursday’s practice had a lot of fireworks with pass-catchers leading the way.

The Wisconsin Badgers finished their sixth practice of the spring on Thursday, which included some highlight-reel plays on both sides as the team got after it with intensity.

It was the second practice since players returned from spring break, although I wasn’t present for the first one.

Here are three quick takeaways from Wisconsin’s sixth practice of the spring.

Playmakers start to emerge

It was the day of the pass-catchers on Thursday, as receivers flashed, both in 1-on-1s and 11-on-11s. Let’s break it down.

Eugene Hilton was a player who stood out through most of the day, as he’s starting to stack multiple consistent practices in his spring ball.

He won both of his 1-on-1 reps that I charted, beating Cairo Skanes on one before beating Jai’mier Scott on another, gaining good separation on an out-route while having a solid catch on the latter pass.

In 11-on-11s, Hilton had multiple catches working with different quarterbacks, hauling in a good volume as he found different ways to separate. Then, he made one of the biggest plays of the day, making a great catch near the sideline by high-pointing the ball over a defender and keeping control as he was tackled, even with his helmet getting ripped off in the process.

Elsewhere, Tucker Ashcraft had a highlight-reel one-handed catch up the seam for a nice gain from Billy Edwards to start off one of the 11-on-11 periods.

Tyrell Henry had a great snag in 1-on-1s over Owen Arnett on the sidelines, getting up for the ball, but it was unclear whether he got one foot in bounds while making the play.

Vinny Anthony bounced back from a drop with a nice double move over Jay Harper for a deep touchdown catch in 1-on-1s.

Lastly, Kyan Berry-Johnson had a solid catch on a pass behind him, initially separating but having to make a contested play in 1-on-1s against Geimere Latimer in the slot.

Now, as a disclaimer, 1-on-1s are usually more beneficial for the wide receivers, but there were several impressive catches on the day, including a few in 11-on-11s.

But, the action wasn’t limited to the offensive skill players only, as the defense got their hands on a few passes as well on Thursday.

Austin Brown had an impressive interception near the end of practice, jumping over a defender to take away a pass from Billy Edwards that was behind his intended target.

Omillio Agard also had an interception of walk-on quarterback Milos Spasojevic on an errant pass where the intended target wasn’t clear.

Overall, it was the day of the pass-catchers on Thursday.

Bigger up front

The front seven was where Wisconsin made its biggest changes this offseason, as they added several players via the transfer portal with the hope of getting bigger to better defend the run.

Well, that was seen on Thursday, as the Badgers deployed a defensive line that included Charles Perkins (6’2, 316 pounds) and Parker Petersen (6’4, 315 pounds) in the middle, with Corey Walker (6’5, 297 pounds) and Darryl Peterson (6’1, 260 pounds) on the edges.

The Badgers have used their outside linebackers in a variety of roles, which has allowed for more defensive linemen to get on the field, but the run game struggled against the front seven on Thursday, marking an improvement up front defensively.

That bigger front included with the second wave of players as Wisconsin lined up Micheal Garner (6’6, 300 pounds), Dillan Johnson (6’2, 293 pounds), Brandon Lane (6’3, 320 pounds), and Tyrese Fearbry (6’4, 249 pounds) together against the second-team offense.

Now, the returns come the regular season will matter the most. But, Wisconsin is looking bigger up front, which should help them more against the run this season.

RB Rotation

The running back position was one of the more intriguing positions entering the offseason as Wisconsin didn’t make any additions to the room, only losing Tawee Walker to the transfer portal and moving Jackson Acker to tight end.

As a result, the top three backs entering the year are Darrion Dupree, Dilin Jones, and Cade Yacamelli, who have all rotated during spring ball. Yacamelli got the first reps in 11-on-11s on Thursday, with Dupree and Jones mixing in behind him.

Yacamelli had a nice run to the edge early, but there wasn’t much success for the running backs on Thursday.

One of the lowlights of the day was a fumble from Darrion Dupree, who dropped a pitch to the backfield. Dupree had a fumble on Tuesday and now had another on Thursday, which will be an issue to monitor for the rest of spring.

While it wasn’t a big day for him, I continue to be intrigued by the upside of Dilin Jones, who has both speed and power as a runner, while providing upside as a pass-catcher as well.

Under new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, the running back position will be key in 2025. There seem to be three key players at the position this year, but the rotation is still getting figured out.
