Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell had his weekly press conference on Monday, just days after the team’s 37-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.

The Badgers head coach tried to remain optimistic heading into a major weekend against the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes, but was faced with several tough questions, and some answers were telling.

Among the questions was whether Fickell looked to meet with the team’s leadership group, which the head coach had said in the preseason was a group that needed to keep this team together.

Days after the humiliating loss, the head coach acknowledged that he hadn’t met with that group and downplayed the importance of those meetings.

“I haven’t met with them just yet,” Fickell said. “I would tell you this, that sometimes sitting with a leadership group isn’t the best way to gauge the pulse of everything that’s going on. Not that they don’t tell you, but it’s still one of those things that’s not the most open.

“But if you’re going through the locker room, watching, sitting, looking, listening, I think that has a lot to do with what we need to be able to do as opposed to just, ‘are they going to tell us everything that they’re thinking, whether it’s a leadership group or not?’ I can sit here and tell you that’s where you don’t feel it. I mean, there’s a difference even to, you know, as we struggled last year, that you felt some things different on the sideline, you saw some things different in the locker room, you heard some things different, whether it was in the locker room or after practice or whatever.

“[Those] guys have done a really good job, continue to push the message of what this is. And so whether they’ve told us exactly how that is. Like, sometimes, by nature, people tell you what you want to hear, but they usually show you what you need to know. And I think that we’ve seen a lot of those things that I think those guys, they continue to promote and push the things that we have stressed. And I mean that in the toughest times. And so, again, it’s been able to communicate with some of those guys, but I think just watching how they react and how they handle the locker room, the things that are being said, the way that guys, you know, come and go, you know, I’m not worried about that. There’s a lot of other things I had to be worried about, stopping Ohio State or defending some of their incredible players or blocking some of their guys. That, to be honest with [you], that’s even more of a concern to me than where we are with the locker room, because I think those guys have done a really good job.”

Wow. That’s a rough statement.

Ahead of the season, Fickell preached how strong the leadership on this team was and noted how important it was for that group to help this team stay the course.

Not meeting with them after such a loss and downplaying the importance of your leadership and the message you’re giving them dictates how Fickell is currently perceived in the locker room.

Fickell also shared that those leadership meetings haven’t been open enough. That’s a huge problem. That environment is where players should be able to voice their concerns and look for some change. That speaks to both a leadership program and the message not sinking through between Fickell and the top brass on the team.

But then, when asked about job security, Fickell said his No. 1 concern is the locker room.

“I don’t know that that’s my position [to talk about job security],” Fickell said. “Right. I mean, first and foremost, I got to make sure that the locker room is the most important thing. I’m not going to change people’s minds outside of the results, obviously. So to go out there and start some campaign of some sorts, like, the truth of the matter is, we got, we got to go game by game. We got to get the guys inside this locker room. That’s what I asked about, right? I mean, like, they could be mad at me, they can be down on me. That’s perfectly fine. But don’t be down on those guys in that locker room. Those guys wear the W.

“The guys that go out there, they can scream and holler if they don’t make a play that they want them to make, but they gotta be able to support them. And I think that’s the most important thing is recognizing what are you really supporting and what do you really love. And, for me to sit here and worry about all those other things, there’s not enough time in the day, there’s not enough energy in the day. So the focus for me and for our staff is on the guys inside that locker room and doing everything we can to make sure that we keep that thing rolling. They’ve got the right mindset. They understand what we got to do, we got to do together, and we got to put our best product out there on Saturday.”

Well, if the goal is focusing on the locker room and getting the guys inside the locker room to unite, meeting with the leadership team and hearing out concerns directly seems like a big step.

Fickell has instead relied on a pre-existing message, which very clearly hasn’t resonated well with the team. There hasn’t been any change over the last four weeks, with this weekend’s loss being the most humiliating.

The head coach has looked to be a bystander and watch from afar while the leadership group works on their own to set the tone. Stopping Ohio State and defending them is certainly important, but that’s impossible to do without a united locker room and a unified leadership group.

While Fickell believes they’ve done a great job, there isn’t really any result that shows that, with players acknowledging that the pattern of beating themselves in back-to-back weeks from last year has carried over now into 2025.

Wisconsin has arguably its two toughest weeks of the season, and the locker room seems divided as ever.

Saturday night at Camp Randall was supposed to be a statement game, a chance for the Wisconsin Badgers to prove it still belonged. Instead, it turned into a 37-0 embarrassment at the hands of Iowa, marking the Badgers’ fourth straight loss to their border rival and raising serious questions about where this program is headed.

From the very first play, Wisconsin looked out of sync. Before the opening kickoff even left the tee, the Badgers were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, a 15-yard penalty that immediately handed Iowa prime field position. That moment set the tone for what became a night of sloppy, undisciplined football.

Quarterback Hunter Simmons struggled mightily, completing just eight of 21 passes for 82 yards and turning the ball over three times. Two interceptions and a fumble gave Iowa short fields, and the Hawkeyes capitalized every time. By the second quarter, Wisconsin looked shell-shocked.

Defensively, it wasn’t much better. The Badgers’ front seven, once the backbone of their identity, got pushed around all night, giving up over 200 yards on the ground. Iowa’s offensive line dominated the trenches, and Wisconsin’s defense couldn’t get off the field. Every missed tackle and late pursuit added to the frustration, while Iowa kept pounding the rock and bleeding the clock.

Meanwhile, the Badger offense never found a rhythm. The run game, usually Wisconsin’s safety valve, stalled behind inconsistent blocking and predictable play-calling. With no spark through the air and no rhythm on the ground, Wisconsin simply had no answers. The result was their first home shutout in nearly two decades, and it didn’t even feel that close.

After the game, head coach Luke Fickell called the performance “dumbfounding,” a word that perfectly captured the energy in the stadium. This wasn’t just a bad night; it was a reflection of deeper issues, lack of discipline, poor execution, and questionable preparation. The penalties, turnovers, and body language told the story of a team searching for identity but finding only frustration.

Losing to Iowa is one thing. Getting humiliated at home, on Homecoming weekend, is another. Wisconsin fans are left wondering: where’s the toughness, the grit, the physicality that defined this program for years? Until the Badgers rediscover that edge, nights like this may keep happening, and the Heartland Trophy will keep heading west.

The Wisconsin Badgers aren’t seeing the results they want on the field, starting the year 2-4 with four consecutive losses by 14+ points.

But, they did get some good news over the weekend, receiving a commitment from 2026 three-star defensive lineman Yahya Gaad, who recently de-committed from the UCLA Bruins.

Gaad, who stands 6’5, 260 pounds, is a native of Tennessee and had previously been committed to the SMU Mustangs before his committment to UCLA. He had committed to SMU back in February before de-committing in April. 10 days later, he got an offer from the Bruins.

He took an official visit to UCLA in May, committing the day after, but the Badgers remained in constant contact, looking to get an official visit after initially scheduling one for the last weekend of May.

Gaad ultimately de-committed from UCLA in September and was on campus for an official visit this weekend during Wisconsin’s 37-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes. He elected to commit to the program, giving the team a third defensive line commit in the 2026 class along with three-stars Djidjou Bah and Arthur Scott.

Wisconsin has aggressively looked to improve their 2026 class, specifically focusing on holes at wide receiver, defensive back, defensive line, and offensive line. They have recently offered or evaluated players at each of those positions, and now have a commitment from Gaad to boost the group.

Gaad was the 16th commitment in the class, but Wisconsin did get a de-commitment from three-star wide receiver Tayshon Bardo on Monday. This was a “mutual parting” for the Badgers who are looking to upgrade that third receiver in their 2026 class, as we reported, alongside four-stars Jayden Petit and Zion Legree.

Wisconsin also got a commitment from three-star cornerback Donovan Dunmore, who flipped from Oregon State and added a second player in the class with three-star Carsen Eloms at the position. Dunmore is another defensive back with track-like speed that Wisconsin sees a good ceiling for.

There are several questions with the commits currently in the 2026 class. The biggest is with top recruit Amari Latimer, who recently took an official visit to Ohio State without telling Wisconsin’s coaching staff. The Buckeyes have yet to land a running back in their 2026 class and Latimer is a realistic possibility there.

Wisconsin has started to do due dilligence on other running backs in the class in case Latimer elects to flip, but are hoping they can keep the back they went all-in on this summer.

Petit has also received interest after a strong start to his senior season, but currently remains firmly committed to Wisconsin. We’ll see if things change there over the next few months or if Wisconsin can hold on to arguably their best receiver prospect in recent memory.

But, the Badgers are looking to add at several positions to round out their 2026 class with some senior evals, throwing out offers to players at safety, cornerback (commitment but could be more), defensive line (commitment), wide receiver, and the offensive line.

Overall, the Badgers are looking to add at least two more defensive backs, prioritizing help at both safety and cornerback after failing to land a player at the former position during the summer.

Wide receiver will be a position to monitor with Bardo’s de-commitment and the Badgers are hoping to add a third offensive lineman in the class after missing out on a few targets in the summer. The wild card could be a running back (or even two) if Latimer heads another way.

The preseason AP Poll was revealed on Monday, just three weeks ahead of the season opener, and the Wisconsin Badgers found themselves inside the rankings at No. 24.

The Badgers ended last year at No. 13 ahead of the final week of the season, but have a completely new team this season with nine new faces joining the returners.

Wisconsin added guard Nick Boyd, wing Andrew Rohde, and forward Austin Rapp in the transfer portal to complement returners John Blackwell and Nolan Winter. They also added guard Braeden Carrington and forward Elijah Gray as depth, while signing a four-man freshman class with Zach Kinziger, Hayden Jones, Aleksas Bieliauskas, and Will Garlock.

At No. 24, Wisconsin is the sixth-highest team in the Big Ten behind Purdue (No. 1), Michigan (No. 7), UCLA (No. 12), Illinois (No. 17), and Michigan State (No. 22). Other teams receiving votes included Oregon (98 votes), Ohio State (23 votes), USC (10 votes), Washington (7 votes), Iowa (6 votes), and Indiana (1 vote).

The Big Ten is expected to be a deep conference yet again, with some strong teams at the top and a number of others that should make a push for a tournament spot in 2025-26.

In the Big Ten preseason media poll, Wisconsin came in at No. 7 behind the six teams ranked ahead of them in the AP preseason poll and Oregon. So, both are fairly in accordance.

Wisconsin will have some early chances to improve its ranking with a road contest at No. 8 BYU in late November, which is followed by games against Providence and either TCU or Florida at the Rady Children’s Invitational the week after.

But first, they have the Red-White scrimmage this upcoming weekend, followed by an exhibition contest against the Oklahoma Sooners later this month.

Should Wisconsin be ranked to start the season? Are they properly ranked? Let us know in the comments below.

The Wisconsin Badgers have been struggling mightily on the field over the last few weeks, most recently losing 37-0 to the Iowa Hawkeyes this past weekend.

Well, those on-field results are starting to impact recruiting, as three-star wide receiver Tayshon Bardo decommitted from the program on Monday.

Bardo, a native of Indiana, had been committed to Wisconsin since March. He had been one of the public leaders of the recruiting class, actively looking to get others to commit to the program. He was an early target of the coaching staff, who offered him back in October of 2024 before getting the spring commitment.

Bardo was a part of a three-receiver recruiting class in the 2026 cycle, joining four-stars Jayden Petit and Zion Legree.

Wisconsin did offer three-star Florida wide receiver Xavier Stinson last week, just after he decommitted from the UCLA Bruins. Stinson has picked up a multitude of offers since, including ones from Purdue, Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, and Wisconsin.

So, they had been anticipating a move in their 2026 class, but Bardo’s decommitment may not be the only one coming.

Several programs have been looking into Petit, who has had a fantastic start to his senior season. While nothing stands out yet, Wisconsin’s entire recruiting class will have to be monitored, given how ugly the season has gone and is projected to go.

While winning isn’t the end-all-be-all in recruiting, a potential 2-10 season does ring the alarm bells. So, we’ll see what the next steps are for the Badgers, who are also actively looking to add to their 2026 class.

The Wisconsin Badgers had their third straight loss in a 24-10 defeat to the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, falling to 2-3 on the season.

Wide Receivers

Vinny Anthony – Snap Count: [55]

Chris Brooks Jr.– Snap Count: [35]

Jayden Ballard – Snap Count: [22]

Eugene Hilton Jr. – Snap Count: [19]

Tyrell Henry – Snap Count: [8]

Trech Kekahuna – Snap Count: [2]

Tight Ends

Lance Mason – Snap Count: [38]

Jackson Acker – Snap Count: [27]

Grant Stec – Snap Count: [12]

Tucker Ashcraft – Snap Count: [10]

Offensive Line

Emerson Mandell – Snap Count: [57]

Riley Mahlman – Snap Count: [57]

Jake Renfro – Snap Count: [57]

Joe Brunner – Snap Count: [57]

Kerry Kodanko – Snap Count: [57]

Personal Thoughts

Hunter Simmons struggled at quarterback in his second start for the Badgers, throwing for just 82 yards and two interceptions, while completing 8 of 21 passes. Regardless of what you thought, that’s a downright awful stat line. It’s telling that head coach Luke Fickell acknowledged the team probably should’ve gone in a different direction. Wisconsin may have a new quarterback once again this week.

At running back, Darrion Dupree’s early injury was costly, which came on a Simmons turnover. Dilin Jones had some good things in the run game, but was single-handedly trying to keep Wisconsin afloat offensively. That usually doesn’t work out well in college football.

At wide receiver, Trech Kekahuna seemed to be a focal part of the gameplan coming into the game, but he was rocked on a jet sweep two plays in and was quickly ruled out. With Tyrell Henry also missing a good portion of the game, true freshman Eugene Hilton Jr. saw 19 snaps, but did not record a stat.

At tight end, Tucker Ashcraft has yet to really earn a role in his first two weeks back. There has been less tight end usage as a whole, with offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes going away from the two tight end sets we saw more frequently earlier in the season.

Along the offensive line, Wisconsin had another change with Jake Renfro back. Kerry Kodanko remained the starter at right guard, and the Badgers had their five starters play the whole game.

Ultimately, there’s a lot to figure out with this offense. They haven’t had quality quarterback play, while the offensive line’s struggles have really hurt the run game. And things don’t get much easier with the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks coming up in the next two weeks.

“I think everybody understands what is at stake for us and what this game means.”

Wisconsin Badgers head coach Luke Fickell said this mere days before his lifeless and undisciplined squad was brutalized by the Iowa Hawkeyes in Camp Randall on Homecoming night, 37-0. Yes, the score was exactly how the game played out. It was shocking and horrific in equal measure, and the home fans in attendance deserved far better.

Let’s get right to the carnage.

Offense

While there were brief moments of competence–especially from RB Dilin Jones, who probably played his best game as a Badger with some very hard running–the Hunter Simmons-led Wisconsin offense was generally incompetent.

Whether missed blocking assignments, puzzling interceptions, or drops, the Badgers were ghastly and rightfully got shut out. Just absolutely abysmal.

Simmons’ final line was 8/21 for 82 yards, two picks, a lost fumble, and no TD. Yikes.

Grade: F

Defense

While the offense and special teams did this unit no favors, a middling Hawkeye attack with a gimpy QB efficiently bludgeoned the Badgers into submission, led by a 200+ yard, hot knife through butter rushing night.

But the worst part of the evening was Wisconsin’s stunning lack of effort and fundamentals. Missed tackles were plentiful, but more troubling were the numerous instances where a Badger clearly didn’t want to make a hit or play on the ball. There were quitters out there, and it was obvious to anyone watching.

Christian Alliegro definitely wasn’t one of them and seemed confused and crestfallen postgame, much like Hunter Wohler looked too often last season.

Grade: D-

Special Teams

Nothing really happened here of note beyond the punting being middling and Vinny Anthony looking solid.

Grade: C-

Coaching

As most of you know, I’ve transitioned from a relative Fickell apologist to “Fickell must go” fairly recently, but this game underscored the fact that he is unequivocally finished as Wisconsin’s coach. He didn’t get it done, has lost this team, and must be fired, however pricey. That’s big-time college football, and if Athletic Director Chris McIntosh is unwilling to do it, it needs to come from over his head.

The game was a stunning indictment (and microcosm) of everything wrong with his tenure. It’s over, folks.

Grade: F

Overall

Wisconsin is last in the Big Ten and probably the worst team in Power 4. I’m trying to think of a more horrific and lackluster game in modern Badger history, and I can’t.

Grade: F

I wrote after the Maryland loss, “Apparently, rock bottom has a basement.” Well, the Iowa Hawkeyes just showed the Wisconsin Badgers that the basement is much deeper than we thought.

The Badgers’ 37-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes sealed the fate of this year’s Badgers team. They are now officially the worst team in the Big Ten Conference, and I don’t think it’s even close. Not after the UCLA Bruins earned another conference win, and the Purdue Boilermakers, which also have not won a conference game this season, fought their tails off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers before falling.

All offseason, we kept hearing about the 42 push-ups this team would do in practice and how embarrassed they were after last year’s loss at Kinnick Stadium. Badger fans were told that this team was going to get revenge on Iowa at Camp Randall.

It was all talk. No bite.

Badger fans, it’s only going to get worse from here before it gets better. No. 1 Ohio State comes into town next Saturday, and then the Badgers take on Oregon at Autzen Stadium the very next week. If Iowa can whoop Wisconsin by 37, who knows how many points the Buckeyes and the Ducks can put on the Badgers.

Here are three things that stood out from Wisconsin’s Homecoming loss to Iowa.

Complete lack of discipline

We should have known how this game would turn out right before the game when Tyreese Fearbry chose to taunt Iowa’s team as they came onto the field.

Wisconsin really spent every single day of the offseason trying to beat Iowa. Even got flagged for a pregame penalty. And they might lose by 50. pic.twitter.com/G2OlFYvMvX
— Chris Hassel (@Hassel_Chris) October 12, 2025

Fearbry’s pregame unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was one of three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties the Badgers committed on Saturday. Wisconsin had to be disciplined in all facets of the game to at least have a chance to knock off Iowa. They miserably failed in that aspect.

Dilin Jones

The only positive takeaway for the Badgers from this game was how hard Jones ran the ball. The redshirt freshman running back finished the game with 16 carries for 69 yards. It was Jones’ highest rushing yard total through three Big Ten Games, and his 4.3 yards per carry was his highest in conference play.

Wisconsin fans should expect Jones to continue racking up yards through the season, as Darrion Dupree went down with an injury on Saturday.

Beginning of the end

Ultimately, the major takeaway I had from this game was that this program, barring a miracle of epic proportions, is going nowhere with Luke Fickell as head coach. I hate writing this because I wanted Fickell to succeed with Wisconsin, but the football program had reached pre-Barry Alvarez era levels of ineptitude. There was no execution or mental toughness on display against Iowa. None. Zip. Nada.

Watching Fickell’s press conference, he appears to be out of answers for this football team, stating he was “dumbfounded in a lot of ways.” After the game, Christian Allegrio admitted what all Badgers fans were thinking after the game. This program has no identity.

Chris McIntosh, who should also be on the hot seat, has two choices. Either cut ties with Fickell mid-season or wait until after the Minnesota game to make a change. You cannot convince Badger fans that this program is going in the right direction under Fickell.

The Wisconsin Badgers had an ugly 37-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday in a brutal game that was over from the start.

The result was especially surprising given that Wisconsin had specifically been talking about this game for the past 10 months and came in believing they were well prepared. Evidently, that wasn’t the case.

After the game, an emotional Luke Fickell had no answers for the performance.

“That’s as low as it can be,” Fickell said. “And I apologize. I apologize to our guys to not be ready, to not have them ready. I’m dumbfounded in a lot of ways, but that’s my job. And this is a game we have been talking about since January and have been doing a lot of things to make sure we were ready and prepared. And obviously, we were not.

“The first quarter was as bad as we could be. Obviously, three turnovers and just not an ability to overcome those things, even defensively, put us in a really, really tough situation, and we never got our head out above water after that. It is a challenge right now. This is no place I’ve ever been, but I don’t know where else there is to go. So those faces in that locker room, it wasn’t [from a] lack of something to happen on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. We knew it was going to be an emotional game. We made a bonehead move before the game started, which is undisciplined, but it was something that, emotionally, we knew we had to be ready for, and we were not. So I’m crushed, disappointed in myself, in our team, but we got one thing to do, and we got to keep swinging.”

Wisconsin players believed that they were well prepared with a great week of practice as well. But clearly, some message isn’t relaying from the practice field to Saturdays, which speaks to a preparation issue for the Badgers and the coaching staff.

And this hasn’t been a one-game occurrence. That has been a problem throughout the Fickell era, and for some reason, there hasn’t been any change.

Right now, it doesn’t seem like answers are coming soon either for the Badgers.

The Wisconsin Badgers were humbled in a 37-0 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, giving up the Heartland Trophy for the fourth consecutive season in an ugly showing at Camp Randall Stadium.

Looking for his first signature win at Wisconsin, head coach Luke Fickell found his squad down 23-0 at halftime, with mental errors, turnovers, and a lack of physicality continuing to plague the team in another ugly loss.

It marks Wisconsin’s fourth straight loss, all by at least 14 points, and eighth straight loss in Big Ten play, leaving fans booing yet again at Camp Randall.

Here’s our recap of Wisconsin’s humiliating 37-0 loss to Iowa on Saturday.

1st half

Wisconsin set the tone in the wrong way to start things off, as linebacker Tyreese Fearbry was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct before the game began, forcing Wisconsin to kick 15 yards deeper. That prompted Iowa to receive the opening kickoff.

Even with decent starting field position, the Badgers defense quickly forced the Iowa offense into a three-and-out and gave the ball straight to the Wisconsin offense, as Hawkeyes quarterback Mark Gronowski had an errant throw on third down.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes looked to involve Trech Kekahuna early in this game, with the first two plays designed to get the ball in his hands. But, things went awry from there as Kekahuna went down with a scary head injury on the second play of the game off of a jet sweep run. He was quickly ruled out.

The Badgers continued downfield, picking up two first downs on the drive, but a bad spot on a Chris Brooks Jr. catch led to a 4th down and a punt. On that same play, Badgers quarterback Hunter Simmons had Vinny Anthony open for a potential touchdown, but looked off him and elected to throw the ball to Brooks.

On its second possession, Iowa decided to attack the Badgers up the middle with huge runs from sophomore running back Kamari Moulton, getting the Hawkeyes to the Wisconsin 20. From there, the Badgers’ defensive line and second level finally stood their ground, getting a run stop followed by solid pass coverages to keep Iowa to a field goal.

With the Wisconsin defense coming up with a solid stand in their own territory, it looked like the Badgers would have some momentum heading into their second possession, but this was where their woes began.

On the second play of the Badgers’ drive, Hunter Simmons’s pass was tipped and intercepted by defensive lineman Bryce Hawthorne, giving the Hawkeyes the ball at the Wisconsin 24-yard line.

From there, Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski hit receiver Sam Philips for a 14-yard gain, setting up a 1st & Goal. Then, running back Kamari Moulton took it in from 6 yards out, untouched for the easy score.

Within the first three drives, the Badgers defense gave up 72 yards on the ground on only nine carries. But, the problem was not with their defense entirely. Wisconsin struggled to play complementary football yet again, and Iowa’s run game was starting to catch up behind an elite offensive line.

With Iowa now up 10-0, the Badgers needed to get some rhythm on offense and to get the game in control, but the struggles continued. On the second play of the drive, Simmons was, once again, picked off. What looked to be a delayed screen to running back Dilin Jones was read perfectly by lineman Aaron Graves, who intercepted the ball en route to Jones and ran it back to the Wisconsin half-yard line.

The Hawkeyes did not let the opportunity go to waste, as Mark Gronowski had a quarterback sneak to give Iowa an early 17-0 lead.

As it has been all season long, the Badgers offense was once again forced to punt on the ensuing possession following a questionable 3rd & 1 pass call on a play-action. That would’ve made sense if Wisconsin looked to go for it on fourth down, but they punted once again near the end of the first quarter.

However, hope was still there. On the first play of Iowa’s drive, Gronowski made another ugly decision, looking to go deep. His pass was intercepted by Ricardo Hallman at the Wisconsin 37-yard line to end the first quarter, giving the Badgers another opportunity offensively.

This energy was immediately sucked out of the crowd, though. Flustered in the pocket on 2nd & 9, Simmons threw a backward pass over the head of running back Darrion Dupree that Iowa recovered deep in Wisconsin territory.

The Badgers had three turnovers in their last four possessions, each of which set up Iowa in plus territory. The Badgers were simply unable to play complementary football throughout the first half and most of the game, relying heavily on their defense to get stops while already placed in tough situations.

This time around, the Badgers defense was able to hold their ground, winning the line of scrimmage battle in a goal-to-go situation and forcing Iowa into another field goal.

With the score 20-0, the Badgers were in desperate need of some sort of offensive production, and Dilin Jones answered the call, getting back-to-back first downs on runs of 13 and 10 yards. But, Wisconsin got stuck in a 4th & 1 situation a few plays later, and they took a chance to go for it.

Jeff Grimes had an interesting play call here with a sprint right concept and a late release for tight end Lance Mason, but the ball went right through Mason’s hands, resulting in another back-breaker for the Badgers. Iowa was once again set up with great field position off the offense’s inability to drive the ball down the field.

The Badgers defense held their ground here, forcing a 3-and-out, giving the offense a chance to put points on the board with four minutes left in the half.

Following a quick out to Vinny Anthony for eight yards and a solid run by Dilin Jones for a gain of six, Hunter Simmons found Lance Mason on a deep crosser for a pickup of 29. With the ball in Iowa territory and a chance to get some points, the Badgers’ offense stalled. An initial loss of 3 on a rush by Jones, followed by an incomplete pass, put the Badgers in a long 3rd down. The Badgers almost pulled off the touchdown on 3rd and 13 with a deep post to Ballard, but the pass fell incomplete on what looked like a pass interference by Iowa. That forced yet another Wisconsin punt.

With 1:40 left in the half, Iowa put together its best offensive drive yet, despite being pinned at its own six-yard line. Kamari Moulton rushed for 12 yards on the first play and followed that with an 18-yard gain from a screen pass. Mark Gronowski continued to attack the short areas of the field, hitting receivers on curls and hitches and driving down to the Wisconsin 25-yard line. As the clock hit zero on the second quarter, kicker Drew Stevens nailed a 49-yard field goal, leading to a 23-point lead for the Hawkeyes.

Kamari Moluton finished the half with 70 of the Hawkeyes’ 113 yards on the ground and tacked on a touchdown as well.

2nd Half

Wisconsin got the ball to open the second half, but was quickly forced into a three-and-out. Iowa responded with another strong drive, as Kamari Moulton had rushes of 4, 14, and 4 yards, while Xavier Williams capped the drive off with gains of 8 and 29 yards, going untouched on the final drive for a touchdown.

Wisconsin’s defensive front just couldn’t generate any traction against a tough-nosed Iowa offense, with the offensive line consistently generating big holes up front.

Down 30-0, the Badgers got some life behind their rushing attack on the ensuing drive, as Dilin Jones got five straight carries to open the drive. Wisconsin did get two first downs, but was stuck with a 4th & 2 at the Iowa 45-yard line. There, Hunter Simmons had a poor decision trying to hit a covered Grant Stec, resulting in another turnover on downs.

After back-to-back punts on both sides, Iowa compiled a 10-play, 46-yard touchdown drive solely via its rushing attack, with Xavier Williams going for 19 yards on 3rd & 9 to seal the deal at 37-0.

Neither side would score afterwards, with the Badgers getting shut out for the first time this season in humiliating fashion. While other Big Ten programs are finding ways to trend upwards, Wisconsin’s arrow continues to point downwards, and things aren’t getting much easier with the Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks coming up in back-to-back weeks.
