20.
Buffalo Rumblings’ resident rules analyst takes you deeper into the world of kickoff rules.

Last year the NFL adopted a one-year trial of what they called “Dynamic Kickoff” rules. I’ll have some specifics later, but for now let’s just say the NFL felt this was a success with the Dynamic Kickoff returning for the 2025 season.

  21.
There’ll be one small change though. The spot of the ball after a touchback used to be the 30-yard line. This season it’ll be the 35. As the Rumblings Rule Guy, I have some thoughts.

  22.

  23.
Is that an opponent third down?

  24.
Because I hear a train horn! Wait, that’s me taking a small victory lap. Last year I broke down the Dynamic Kickoff rules (here). I started off dissecting the rules and interjected my opinion at the end. In short, I predicted an increase in kickoff returns as well as my thought that this was the goal of the NFL since they couldn’t be bothered to tell us their motivation.

  25.
Well I was right on both counts. The NFL’s own post announcing the change to the rule confirms the desire was to increase the number of kickoffs to make the play relevant again. I promised some specific on success. Per the NFL there were 332 more kickoffs returned, which represents an 11% increase over the prior year (21.8% to 32.8%). When it comes to returns of 40+ yards or more, the NFL had their highest total since 2016 with 59 returns hitting that mark.

  26.
How will the tweaked rule change the outcome?

  27.
I’d like to reiterate a key component of the Dynamic Kickoff rules. The area between the end zone and the 20-yard line is called the “landing zone.” Kicks short of this are an automatic penalty on the kicking team. Kicks going beyond the landing zone (aka “into the end zone”) can be returned but like kicks going out the back of the end zone, will usually be a touchback. More on that in a second.

  28.
The thing I most wanted to reiterate though is that fair catches are not a thing. This means kicks dropping into the landing zone will pretty much always be returned. The returner is allowed to see if the ball will roll into the end zone or out of bounds, but for obvious reasons this is risky.

  29.
The new tweak gives the receiving team an additional five-yard advantage when it comes to touchbacks. If the first iteration of the Dynamic Kickoff significantly increased returns, it’s nearly certain this tweak will increase them even more. Teams won’t want to give up that extra five yards over and over when they have good odds to stop the other team much shorter of that.

  30.
Will the Buffalo Bills be ready?

  31.
Yes. Last year in Week 18, the Buffalo Bills had nothing to play for. Traditionally speaking at least. With “points” and “winning” not being a concern, the Bills took the time to get real-world data on kicking the ball into the landing zone. I wrote about the situation here.

  32.
This makes perfect sense with Sean McDermott holding a spot on the Competition Committee. It’s likely the committee was discussing this throughout the season, and McDermott’s insider status made it simple to see which way the wind was blowing. For that matter, the enthusiasm for the Dynamic Kickoff was likely not a secret to any team.

  33.
If you read that article I wrote after Week 18, you might remember that Buffalo’s successful test run led to a seven-yard advantage from the touchback spot. Also kudos to your memory if you actually recalled that. With the tweak that’d now be a 12-yard difference.

  34.
While it’s true that the new rules led to more big returns, it’s also true that having one or two more of those against you in a season is likely a good tradeoff for routinely gaining that kind of result.

  35.
It wasn’t that long ago that yours truly was convinced the kickoff was going the way of the dodo. Instead, the revival is real.

  54.
  55.
A bit of a head-scratcher in this week’s collection

Now that the 2025 NFL Draft is less than three weeks away, it’s often interesting to see how mock drafts trend with their authors. There was an incredible amount of consistency in early mocks for the Buffalo Bills with Michigan defensive lineman Kenneth Grant.

  56.
This certainly made sense as many fans have identified a one-technique defensive tackle as Buffalo’s biggest need. In the following weeks there has certainly been a shift — and this week caught me by surprise.

  57.
As I scrolled across the internet this week, the first three mock drafts I found had the Bills selecting wide receiver Emeka Egbuka from Ohio State at pick 30. Egbuka plays primarily out of the slot, which added to the surprise when seeing his name pop up in multiple mocks. While he’s certainly a talented receiver, I would be shocked if he ended up being the selection — especially after Buffalo gave wide receiver Khalil Shakir a contract extension this offseason.

  58.
Here’s what writers had to say about the pick of Egbuka:

  59.
Maurice Jones-Drew (NFL Network)

  60.

“The Bills strengthen the supporting cast for reigning MVP Josh Allen by adding a receiver with a high football IQ, great route-running ability and the toughness to make contested catches downfield.”

  61.
Justin Lewis (Pro Football Network)

  62.

  63.
30) Buffalo Bills

  64.
Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State

  65.
“Despite taking wide receiver Keon Coleman early in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills still need weapons on the outside for reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.

  66.
Emeka Egbuka could step on the field and be the most talented and targeted receiver for the Bills immediately.”

  67.

  68.
Gilberto Manzano (Sports Illustrated)

  69.

  70.
30. Buffalo Bills

  71.
Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State

  72.
“The Bills didn’t get much from Amari Cooper last year, and Keon Coleman had somewhat of a quiet rookie season. Buffalo can’t wait around for players to develop while Josh Allen is in his prime. Egbuka has received comparisons to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. This selection makes a dangerous offense even better.”

  73.

  74.

  75.
Thankfully there were other mock drafts this week that focused on the defensive side of the ball for the Bills. Chris Trapasso (CBS Sports) has the Bills addressing the needs at defensive tackle, with Ole Miss standout Walter Nolen. Trapasso had this to say about Nolen landing with Buffalo at 30:

  76.

“The Bills are happy to stop Nolen’s slide here to formulate a dynamic upfield pass-rushing group on the inside with Ed Oliver.”

  77.
Trapasso’s counterpart, Josh Edwards (CBS Sports), also had the team addressing the needs at tackle with the aforementioned Kenneth Grant at pick 30. Per Edwards:

  78.

“Cornerback and interior defensive line are probably the two most pressing needs for the Bills. One of those weaknesses is addressed at No. 30 overall with the selection of Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant.”

  79.
Defensive line remained the focus for Lance Zierlein (NFL Network), with edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku from Boston College as the pick at 30. Zierlein had the following to say about Ezeiruaku:

  80.

“With Joey Bosa signed to a one-year deal in Buffalo, the Bills could bring Ezeiruaku along slowly as a rookie while still adding rush value to their defensive front with this pick.”

  81.

  82.
The final mock drafts included this week address the need for help in the defensive backfield at One Bills Drive. Garret Podell (CBS Sports) had another popular name mocked to the Bills, with South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori as the selection at 30.

  83.

“The Bills need more juice on the back end of their defense, so that’s why they select electric South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori. He hit a perfect 10.0 out of 10.0 in the Relative Athletic Score after he ran 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash while recording 43 inches in the vertical jump and 11-foot-6 in the broad jump with a stature of 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds.”

  84.
Almost more surprising than Egbuka’s popularity is the lack of cornerbacks mocked to the Bills. Only Eric Edholm (NFL Network) went with a corner as he selected Florida State’s Azareye’h Thomas.

  85.

“If the Bills don’t plan to bring back Rasul Douglas, I could see them targeting a longer corner such as Thomas. The Kaiir Elam experiment flopped, but that shouldn’t dissuade Buffalo from taking Thomas, who also had some great camp battles with Keon Coleman in their one season together at Florida State. A D-lineman could also make sense here.”

  109.
What are the best sports moments in movies?

  110.
We’re in the lull between the major part of NFL free agency and the lead up to the 2025 NFL Draft, and some stuff happened this week that led me down a different path than the Buffalo Bills.

  111.
I’m 41, and I grew up watching sports and movies in the 1990s. So I watched a lot of great Buffalo Bills football at a very impressionable age. I also watched a ton of Van Kilmer movies.

  112.
Val Kilmer passed away this week at age 65, and plenty of people around my age have bee discussing their favorite Val Kilmer movies this week. I’ll first remember him as Iceman in Top Gun like a lot of you, but his turn as Doc Holliday in Tombstone was one of my dad’s favorites and my family quotes it to this day. The Doors, Batman Forever, The Saint, The Ghost and the Darkness, and yes Top Secret! were all burned into my TV screen. (I was just a touch too young for Heat in 1995 I guess and a touch too old for The Prince of Egypt in 1998.)

  113.
Anyway, if you want to talk about Val Kilmer in the open thread here today, go for it. But I’m using one of the iconic scenes in that movie to pivot to a sports conversation in our weekend chat here.

  115.
What’s the best sports scene in a non-sports movie?

  116.
The beach volleyball scene in Top Gun is one of the most important scenes from the movie. Not just because we all asked the question of “Who wears jeans while playing beach volleyball?” but because it further establishes competitiveness and camaraderie among the Top Gun recruits, and explains why Cruise needs to clean himself up later.

  117.
There are plenty of great sports moments in non-sports movies. Here’s a list, but I want you to plant your flag in the comments.

  175.
New ‘Naked Gun’ movie trailer understandably distances itself from O.J. Simpson

  181.

  182.
  183.
Former Bills running back O.J. Simpson’s character Detective Nordberg is back — sort of.

Former Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson was a star before he even became an NFL player, etching his face into the national continuousness at USC before becoming the No. 1 overall pick. One of his most prominent acting roles has brought him back in the national spotlight this week, despite his death in 2024.

  184.
Following his time in the NFL (not to mention during), Simpson became an actor and sports broadcaster. One of his best-known roles came in the three Naked Gun movies in the late 1980s and early 1990s where he played a police detective who was constantly injured by the zany actions of his colleagues.

  185.
As has been the case a lot in Hollywood recently, Paramount is rebooting the Naked Gun franchise for a new generation. In the new version, Liam Neeson is playing the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Frank Drebin.

  186.
The first trailer for the new movie was released this week, and it includes a pretty clever bit playing off the fact that a lot of police officers also have family members who were also police officers. In addition to seeing Drebin’s junior talking to a picture of his father, we cut to another actor talking to a picture of his father, Captain Ed Hocken, played by George Kennedy. It pans to a line of crying men presumably talking to their departed relatives before a cut to a picture of O.J. Simpson as Detective Nordberg. Then a young police officer side-eyes the camera before shaking his head no.

  189.
This bit from the new Naked Gun movie trailer definitely made me laugh
— Lorcan the Hedgehog (@lorcanhedgehog.bsky.social) 2025-04-03T17:26:28.611Z
  190.

  191.
  192.

  193.
Many of us had been wondering what the plot of the new movie was going to be, and including tributes to the original trilogy is always a great way to generate nostalgia. With Nielsen, Kennedy, and Simpson all deceased, there couldn’t be a moment of handing the torch onscreen.

  194.
Production of the movie didn’t start until after Simpson’s death, but I think we can all agree it’s pretty unlikely Simpson would have had a role anyway. Producer Seth MacFarlane has a pretty extensive history lampooning Simpson on his TV shows — specifically Family Guy — and this trailer gag would seem to seal the deal.

  195.
O.J. Simpson’s legal troubles are well-documented

  196.
We can’t in good faith write an article about O.J. Simpson without including his legal troubles, and admittedly that’s a a pretty weak phrase for the stain on Simpson’s legacy.

  197.
Simpson had a history of alleged domestic abuse, ultimately culminating in accusations he murdered his ex-wife and her boyfriend at the time in 1994. He was acquitted in a nationally broadcast trial, but lost the civil case and most of his assets in a subsequent trial.

  198.
Naked Gun 331⁄3, the final movie in the trilogy discussed in this article, came out less than a month before Simpson’s ex-wife was murdered.

  199.
Later, he would be convicted of felonies and sent to prison in an armed robbery case attempting to reclaim memorabilia he said was his. He was released four years into his 33-year sentence.

  200.
O.J. Simpson’s acting career spanned his time in the NFL and beyond

  201.
In addition to being on the cover of Sports Illustrated, he pursued acting during his time in L.A. Simpson’s acting career began while he was at USC, appearing on the popular TV show Dragnet and starring in an episode of Medical Center.

  202.
While in the NFL, he took notable roles in the Roots miniseries and The Towering Inferno and hosted Saturday Night Live. His star was so big, he auditioned for the role of The Terminator that ultimately went to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  203.
After his playing career ended, he also took prominent spokesperson role with Hertz rental cars and as a football analyst for ABC’s Monday Night Football and later NBC Sports.

  204.
On the field, O.J. Simpson was one of the best ever

  205.
We wrote an obituary for Simpson almost one year ago in April 2024 when he passed away. His career on the field was virtually unmatched, and he became the firstp layer in NFL history to rushing for 2000 yards in a season. He still holds the NFL record for yards per game in a season (143.1 in 1973).

  206.

Simpson, who rushed for 11,236 yards in his career, was selected for five consecutive Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro honors from 1972 to 1976. The Buffalo running back was the first player to rush for 2000 yards in a single season, which earned him the 1973 Most Valuable Player award. Simpson led the league in rushing yards four times in his career as well as being the touchdown leader twice. He also had the most points scored of any player in 1975. Simpson’s storied career garnered him a spot in the NFL’s Hall of Fame and he was inducted in 1985, as well as a spot on the Bills’ Wall of Fame and the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.

  207.
Simpson, however, was not elected to the Bills’ 50th anniversary team in 2011.

  227.

  228.
  229.
The Bills filled some roles during free agency. Now it’s time to finish the job in the draft.

The bulk of NFL free agency is well behind us at this point. There are still some veterans available but Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane is now mostly focused on the NFL Draft at the end of April.

  230.
With Beane adding numerous players to the Bills’ roster and filling several needs, Buffalo can yet again attack the draft trying to add the best available player according to their board. Sure, most likely they’ll pick the best available player within one of those positions of need, but those needs aren’t as worrisome as they were before free agency began.

  231.
So, here’s my best guess at what One Bills Drive will do when draft time arrives. I’ll use the NFL mock draft database mock-draft-simulator for this exercise, trying to maximize my ammo and make the moves I believe Beane would do in this situation.

  232.

  233.
Round 1, pick 30 — Trade Down

  234.

  235.
Buffalo sends Rd 1: 30, Rd 4: 109, and Rd 6: 206

  236.
New Orleans sends Rd 2: 40, Rd 3: 71, and Rd 4: 131

  237.

  238.
With several prospects who fit what the Bills are looking for at some positional needs (cornerback, defensive tackle, edge rusher, wide receiver, and safety), and the New Orleans Saints calling to offer picks 2.40, 3.71, and 4.131, it’s wise to move down and add even more ammo to be able to move back up when the right situation calls for it.

  239.

  240.
  241. Photo by Brooke Sutton/Getty Images
  242.

  243.
Texas wide receiver Mathew Golden was available here and if it’s up to me, I’d run to the podium and give Commissioner Roger Goodell the card myself. However, since I’m trying to do what I believe Beane will do, I don’t see him operating as though receiver is their main need.

  244.
Beane is on record saying recently that he’s looking to add competition in this group, not someone to become a true WR1. Moving down here and adding a missing third-rounder, with all the talent still available, seems more like a Beane move.

  245.

  246.
Round 2, pick 40 — Trade Down

  247.

  248.
Buffalo sends Rd 2: 40

  249.
Dallas sends Rd2: 44, Rd 3: 76, Rd 5: 149, Rd 6: 204, and Rd 7: 247

  250.

  251.
Yet again at least two interesting names are available at DT and CB, plus one more each at EDGE and WR. With the Cowboys calling and offering a package of picks, it’s a no-brainer moving down just four spots, especially when the best value available on Buffalo’s board is at OT and RB here.

  252.
Round 2, pick 44 — Tyleik Williams, DT (Ohio State)

  253.

  255. Photo by Robin Alam/ISI Photos/Getty Images
  256.

  257.
After two trades, moving down 14 spots and adding valuable ammo in draft capital in the current draft, Beane makes the Bills' first selection by adding the disruptive former Buckeye.

  258.
Tyleik Williams has all the tools to become a terror in the middle of the Bills’ defense. At 6’3” and 334 pounds, he has the size to start at nose tackle from day one and make the lives of every front-seven defender around him easier, especially defensive tackle Ed Oliver and linebacker Terrel Bernard.

  259.
Despite his huge size, Williams moves as someone much smaller and possesses the strength to demand double teams. His presence would undoubtedly make it harder to run the ball down the middle of Buffalo’s defensive line.

  260.
Williams would be an interesting name for Buffalo at pick 30 in Round 1 already, so getting him in the second while adding more picks would be a dream scenario. Other intriguing names available here that fit this criteria were wide receiver Luther Burden III (Missouri) and cornerback Maxwell Hairston (Kentucky).

  261.

  262.

  263.
IDL Tyleik Williams

An undeniable force when it comes to defending the run, Tyleik can also sometimes shine in passing situations thanks to impressive athletic ability for his size.

He could be one hell of smart choice to be made on Day 2

Tier 2 pic.twitter.com/32R2wEV8N4
— Rayane M (@RayaneScout) March 16, 2025

  268.

  269.
Round 2, pick 46 — Trade up and draft Maxwell Hairston, CB (Kentucky)

  270.

  271.
Buffalo sends Rd 2: 56, Rd 4: 132, and Rd 6: 177

  272.
Atlanta sends Rd 2: 46

  276. Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images
  277.

  278.
With some huge names still available and the ammunition in place to go up and grab them, why not? So, with the Falcons possessing just a fourth- and two seventh-round picks after pick 46 in Round 2, I sent them another fourth plus a sixth to move up 10 spots in Round 2 and picked cornerback Maxwell Hairston out of Kentucky.

  279.
Hairston is an awesome athlete who showed fluidity to man up against the best wide receivers in college football. He possesses the speed (4.28 40-yard dash at the combine) to recover against the fastest receivers in the league, plays well in man and zone, can track and make plays on the ball consistently, and is a physical corner willing to play downhill and tackle in the box.

  280.
His diminutive size (5’11”, 183 pounds) is the only concern with him, one I believe is worth the risk, being able to pick him in the middle of round two. Hairston is another day-one starter in this Bills’ defense.

  281.

  282.

  297.

  298.
Beane has told us he’s ready to wheel and deal with his picks in this draft and here he takes advantage of another big name falling in Round 2. Nic Scourton is one of the five best edge rushers in this year’s draft and it would be wise to guarantee him here in exchange for three fifth-round picks.

  299.
With an NFL-ready frame and an already well-developed arsenal of rush moves, Scourton can crack the EDGE rotation early, making the battle for snaps behind Greg Rousseau and Joey Bosa very interesting. A.J. Epenesa, Javon Solomon, and after his six-game suspension, Michael Hoecht, will all be envisioning opportunities there.

  300.
I’d expect Scourton to beat out his competition and become a factor early in his rookie year. Anyway, even if he needs more time, it would be a wise add, considering Bosa’s injury history and Hoecht’s suspension. At the bare minimum, he’s a good developmental prospect at edge rusher, where we have Bosa and Epenesa playing on what could be their last year with the team.

  313.

  314.
Mukuba isn’t the type of defender the Bills have added to their safety room under head coach Sean McDermott, but he might be what they need. He’s a true ball-hawking center-field type of safety capable of covering ground in the defensive backfield and making opposing quarterbacks pay for testing his coverage capabilities.

  315.
With Taylor Rapp, Cole Bishop, Damar Hamlin, and Darrick Foster, Buffalo has a very solid group of safeties who can play near the line of scrimmage, be physical in the box, and tackle well. That’s not Mukuba’s game, but he has everything else to complement those players and make Buffalo’s defense, especially on clear passing downs, even stronger. That’s a guy who will be able to generate a lot of takeovers for the team.

  328.

  329.
Remember when Beane celebrated Gabe Davis running a 40-yard dash slower than advised? Jalen Royals might be this year’s version of that.

  330.
Coming off an ankle injury, the dynamic 6’0”, 205-pound deep-threat wasn’t able to impress during the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash time. However, his tape shows a lot of football speed, and also a guy who’s able to run good routes, get behind defensive backfields, and beat defenders downfield and on contested catch opportunities. Royals possesses nice body control and is a natural “hands-catcher.”

  331.
He reminds me a bit of Lee Evans and it would be awesome to give Josh Allen a poor man’s Evans to work with. Royals is the dynamic deep threat Buffalo’s offense still needs.

  344.

  345.
At 6’3” and 186 pounds, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the combine, Zah Frazier is a physical specimen at cornerback. His combination of size, length, and speed makes him a great press corner who can excel outside in the NFL. He’s also a very good tackler, with a career 5.6% missed tackle rate, and only missed two tackles to go with his six interceptions and five pass breakups in 2024.

  346.
That’s the first double-dip in this year’s draft, at a position the Bills have Christian Benford locked up as CB1 for the foreseeable future. But after that, Dane Jackson doesn’t inspire much confidence and isn’t a solution long-term, and Ja’Marcus Ingram is better suited for an inside spot.

  359.

  360.
Kyle Williams represents too much value to pass up here. To go with a should-be Hall of Fame name, Williams simply is a natural separator, capable of making sharp cuts almost at full speed and creating plenty of opportunities for his quarterback to be able to take advantage of it.

  361.
He ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at the combine and measured in at 5’11” and 190 pounds Williams possesses good enough size and an even better release package to line up outside and simply create space. In fact, I have more confidence in Williams becoming the “man-beater” this offense needs than I have in Joshua Palmer. He could become a major steal in Round 5.

  373. Photo by Roger Wimmer/ISI Photos/Getty Images
  374.

  375.
A former wide-receiver-turned-running-back, Brashard Smith possesses natural hands catching passes out of the backfield. He’s a mismatch against linebackers and safeties in the passing game, and his outstanding work protecting the quarterback allows him to stay on the field every down, and most importantly, to be a true weapon in the two-minute offense.

  376.
At 5’10” and 194 pounds, Smith is still building up his running back shape. Don’t be foolish, though. He has experience running between the tackles and his vision, patience, and burst makes him a tough player to be defended.

  377.
Smith also has experience returning kicks, which could make him a valuable special teams piece early in his career. Also, adding another 4.3 guy (4.39 40-yard dash at the combine) to the offense won’t hurt.

  378.
Smith is relatively new to the running back position. With James Cook’s contract situation looking bleak, it would be good to have the dynamic Smith being developed and waiting in the wings. If he doesn’t become a viable option to replace Cook, he has a chance at becoming Ty Johnson’s replacement in the future.

  391.

  392.
It’s about time for the Bills to add a young arm to their quarterback room and try to develop some sort of contingency plan behind Josh Allen.

  393.
Leonard is available here for a reason: he hasn’t been able to put it all together at the collegiate level. Consistently his traits popped up more than his level of play. However, he won’t come in with any expectation to see the field early, and with his size, strong arm, and quick legs, he could become the ideal project to back up Josh Allen long term.

  401.

  402.
Final Thoughts

  403.
A lot of wheeling and dealing by general manager Brandon Beane in this mock, maximizing the opportunities to draft players who could be in the conversation at pick 30, but with their fall to Round 2, Buffalo could grab more than one of those with three picks in the top 51, and five in the top 76.

  404.
It’s a draft where the team could be leaving with two to three full-time day-one starters in Williams, Hairston, and Mukuba, plus at least two more contributors in the rotation in Scourton and Royals. Frazier is a nice prospect to work with but don’t count him out of the battle for the CB2 spot — he has the tools to fight for it. Same with Kyle Williams fighting for snaps early — he’s not a downfield threat as Royals, but might be a more complete receiver already.

  405.
Brashard Smith has a shot at winning the kickoff returner job from the get-go, and will be an exciting piece to develop in the offensive backfield. Riley Leonard for sure excites me more as a prospect than Shane Buechele or Mike White.

  406.
I’d be extremely happy with a draft like this by Beane, bringing in several player who should be able to challenge for playing time early, and with potential to become impact players down the road. I can see several of those prospects already contributing heavily by playoff time — a must for this Bills team that must elevate their level around Josh Allen in the biggest moments a bit more.

  407.
Mock Draft re-cap:

  471.
  472.
Oladejo has seen his stock rise in recent months following a transitional senior season

News has begun to trickle in about players the Buffalo Bills will officially host as part of the team’s top-30 visits ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. The draft is just 20 days away now, which means prospect visits may come to the fold fast and furious over the next few weeks. In previous years, we might have far more names by now among Buffalo’s top-30 visit list, so this timing represents a bit of a new twist in the reporting process.

  473.
One might expect the Bills to be taking visits from plenty of defensive players, specifically defensive tackles and defensive backs. But they won’t stop there in trying to build a stronger beast of a defense in 2025 and beyond.

  474.
A name to keep in mind now is Oluwafemi “Femi” Oladejo. An edge rusher who played collegiately on the west coast, Oladejo is now one of among up to 30 players set to visit One Bills Drive in the coming days, per a tweet first shared by writer Lauren Elizabeth.

  475.
Despite general manager Brandon Beane having just signed defensive end Greg Rousseau to a four-year contract extension, and bringing in edge rusher Joey Bosa, there’s an argument to be made for adding more resources to what’s already a crowded defensive end situation. That’s due largely to the fact that in 2024, the team’s edge defenders just didn’t get the job done often enough, most noticeably in big games.

  476.
Apart from Von Miller being let go, the unit looks nearly the same as last year while adding Bosa and hybrid D-lineman Michael Hoecht. The Bills will have to play at least the first six games without Hoecht thanks to his looming suspension for use of performance-enhancing drugs.

  477.
Will Buffalo be content to run it back with last season’s group largely intact? At first blush, it doesn’t seem like the best plan — hence visits with young prospects such as Oladejo, who is a linebacker-turned-EDGE defender and someone who’s come into his own following said switch.

  478.
Earlier in the offseason, B.J. Monacelli reported on Oladejo following his NFL Scouting Combine work. Notably, Monacelli observed him as a player to watch for landing with Buffalo on Day 2, but with a word of caution on that idea:

  479.

“He’s rising on draft boards and likely won’t be around when Buffalo’s on the clock in Round 2, so a trade-up might have to happen. That said, Oladejo has traits and some exciting flashes on film that make him a tasty prospect oozing with potential.”

  480.
At the combine, Oladejo measured in at 6’3” and 259 pounds with 33 3/8” arms and 9 3/4” hands; he didn’t run the 40-yard dash or 10-yard split, but put up numbers of 36.5” in the vertical jump and a 10’ broad jump. At his pro day, Oladejo was time at 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

  481.
Oladejo divided his four-year college career between the University of California and UCLA. He was an academic standout, earning placements on the Big Ten Academic Honor Roll and also the UCLA Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Additionally, Oladejo’s senior season saw him earn a trip to the Senior Bowl and also the Kenny Clark Award for “Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman” (2024).

  482.
In four college seasons, Oladejo played 47 games, making 240 tackles (121 solo), 25 tackles for loss, six sacks, two interceptions, six pass defenses, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. It was at UCLA where he began to carve out a name for himself as a rush specialist, claiming five of his six sacks and 17 of his 25 tackles for loss.
(All stats courtesy of Sports Reference.)

  483.

  484.
Does Femi Oladejo fit what the Buffalo Bills need at EDGE?

  485.
Based on his successful transition to EDGE, Oladejo may best be observed as a raw, developmental prospect. He’s someone who might truly blossom if given enough time to learn behind the scenes in a situation like the Bills could offer.

  486.
Given that success, it’s reasonable to view Oladejo as a still-ascending player who shows enough traits already that he may very well find himself drafted earlier than anyone could have predicted had he remained a true linebacker. Though thought of as a pass rusher first, Oladejo also brings strong ability as a run defender.

  487.
Add in his solid and productive showing at the Senior Bowl as a prospect needing to prove himself, and there’s reason to imagine One Bills Drive has more than just cursory interest in Femi Oladejo. He’s in need of molding, which is something Buffalo may be looking to do this season with a rookie or two.

  523.
Benford joins Ja’Marcus Ingram as the second Bills DB to pen a children’s book in the past 12 months.

Buffalo Bills cornerback Christian Benford signed a contract extension that will keep him in Orchard Park, NY through 2029. The Bills’ 2022 sixth-round draft pick said he is thankful to be staying in Buffalo and that there is plenty of work left to be done. Off the field, he’s working too — but instead of cleats and pads, he’s using pen and paper.

  524.
Benford has written a children’s book entitled “Stylish Safari: The Adventures of Being You” with the goal of impacting kids in what he says is the best way possible. His goal: instill in them that it’s okay to be you.

  525.
“Let the kid be a kid,” Benford said is his message and that he hopes to inspire his readers to wear what they want to wear and do what they want to do. “To impact them in the best way possible to help wire their brain to be them — to be yourself.”

  526.
Benford said that the inspiration for the book came from a memory of his own childhood. He remembers having a Power Ranger watch that he was proud of, but another child bullied him for wearing it. Benford said that the child version of himself confronted the bully and that the experience was empowering.

  527.
“After that happened, I felt good,” he said. “Like, I’m still wearing my Power Ranger watch. Can’t nobody tell me nothing.”

  528.
Benford said that he wanted to write a children’s book so that he can expand his reach. He hopes that his book will teach kids he never meets, ones he won’t have a chance to talk to in person, that it’s okay to be different.

  529.
“People are going to say what they say, think what they think, but if it’s not helping you grow to be a better man or a better woman, it doesn’t matter,” he explained his simple message, “If you want to be different, be different. Be different and stand 10 toes to it. That’s why I wanted to write that book.”

  530.
Benford isn’t the first Buffalo Bills player to write a children’s book. In fact, he isn’t even the first one on the current roster. Last season Ja’Marcus Ingram released a children’s book, “The Lil’ Player that Could.”

  531.
Stevie Johnson has written several children’s books and collaborated with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson on two of them. Eric Wood, Brandin Bryant, and Ray Bentley — whose series about a dinosaur were illustrated by former Bill Mike Hamby — are all among the children’s book authors who have played for the Bills.

  532.
Christian Benford’s book is available now for pre-order, with an expected release date of April 22, 2025.
