I decided that, ahead of the Buffalo Bills’ game with the Chiefs, it might be wise to see if “a lot” meant “more than usual.” More importantly, “a lot” doesn’t necessarily mean “well” so I thought I should check in on that too.

Here we go!

A Bunch of Rushing Stats!

The data comes courtesy of Pro Football Reference (PFR) and as always I encourage you to bookmark them if you haven’t yet as they’re one of my go-to sources for football data. Please note that I did not promise you a long article as the above table does so much of the heavy lifting. Most of the data is straight from PFR, with me extrapolating

The short answer, as evidenced by the right-most column is that Patrick Mahomes has been running the ball much more often in 2025. The 5.8 rushing attempts per game easily eclipses his next highest season of 4.7 runs per game. Most seasons he doesn’t reach 4.0, let alone significantly outpace it.

Not only is he running the ball more often, it’s been more effective. His 6.1 yards per attempt is the highest of his career, though this is less glaring than the attempts. Still, this means there’s been zero decrease in efficiency even compared to his best seasons.

As a result of the increased volume and overall effectiveness per rush, the rest of the stats don’t need to be belabored. He’s currently on pace to shatter his personal records for yards in a season, touchdowns, and first downs.

What this means for Bills fans is this means for us is that having a spy on Mahomes this coming Sunday will be more important than ever. We all can easily remember that he’s gashed us before while running. It’s not like run defense has been the strength of the Buffalo Bills in the Sean McDermott era either.

Also since we’re Bills fans, we tend to think of running quarterbacks in terms of our own. How good has Patrick Mahomes been this season? Extrapolated to 17 games, in many metrics he’s approaching or even exceeding Josh Allen’s averages. We for sure know how lethal “average Josh Allen” level is, so the Mahomes run game is something to be respected.

5 Buffalo Bills to watch vs. the Kansas City Chiefs

Perhaps the overall records aren’t what we expected when we initially saw that the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs would meet in Week 9 of the 2025 NFL season. That said, the fact remains that this matchup is still among the biggest in the NFL this season.

Over the course of this decade, the Bills-Chiefs rivalry has produced some classic games. Buffalo has managed to find success against the Chiefs in the regular season, but in the playoffs, it’s been Kansas City that has been perfect. Will the pattern hold this year? The Chiefs and the Bills seem to be two teams heading in opposite directions of late, as the Chiefs are now 5-3 after an 0-2 start while Buffalo is 5-2 after a 4-0 start.

Both teams won in convincing fashion last week, as Kansas City downed the Marcus Mariota-led Washington Commanders 28-7, and the Bills trounced the Andy Dalton-led Carolina Panthers 40-9. Both teams are looking up in their respective divisional standings, as the Bills trail the New England Patriots in the AFC East and the Chiefs trail both the Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West.

Buffalo would benefit tremendously from a victory this weekend, as it would increase their playoff odds in a big way. In order to come out victorious, they’ll need their top players to perform to their standard. It’s impossible to narrow this list to just five players, but that’s the task, so feel free to share your key players for Buffalo in the comments below.

Here are our five Bills to watch this week.
_____________________________________________________________________________

QB Josh Allen

This is a safe place, Bills fans, so we can be honest: Allen’s stats, while still fantastic (he’s completed 68% of his passes, thrown 12 touchdowns against four interceptions, and is averaging 223 passing yards and 37 rushing yards per game), don’t tell the whole story of what has been a rough couple of weeks for the reigning MVP.

Allen has looked indecisive, flustered, “off,” whatever you want to call it, and he’s been so as far back as the Bills’ victory over the New Orleans Saints. We can chalk it up to scheme, a hidden injury, a slump, or whatever else we’d like, but we know that the version of Allen that has to appear on Sunday in order for Buffalo to win is a version that we haven’t seen since the Bills beat the Miami Dolphins — or, if you’re of the mindset that Superhero Josh is the only way Buffalo beats Kansas City, since Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Allen I want to see on Sunday is the one who goes through his progressions confidently, throws the ball quickly and crisply, and who takes what the defense gives him. He’s been there for stretches, but he hasn’t really been there for a whole game in a bit this season.

A Steve Spagnuolo defense usually isn’t a cure-all game for quarterbacking ills, but Allen has performed at a high level against this defense before. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady needs to scheme some easy looks early in the game, whether via crossing routes, rub-routes, or play-action shots that allow Allen to establish some rhythm quickly.

RB James Cook

What else will help keep the passing game on point? Another fantastic performance from James Cook, who has arguably been the team MVP to this point of the season. He was otherworldly last week against a strong Carolina Panthers run defense, amassing 216 rushing yards in the blowout victory.

Cook is going to see plenty of touches on Sunday, as the game plan is almost certainly going to involve two things: Keeping Patrick Mahomes off the field via long, sustained possessions, and rushing Mahomes with four pass-rushers to keep him uncomfortable while maintaining coverage integrity (more on that point below). If Brady wants to reach into his bag of tricks and scheme ways for Cook to catch passes, that would be a welcome addition to what has been a frustratingly inconsistent Buffalo offense.

The Chiefs usually use a spy on Allen, and it will likely either be Nick Bolton or Leo Chenal. That takes a player out of coverage, which means that a running back could find space on check-release routes, swing passes, angle routes, or wheel routes out of the backfield. The Bills want to limit Cook’s touches, but in a game this big, they can’t worry about a future that might not exist unless they handle business in the present. The Bills need to let James Cook whip up a Sunday special.

WR Keon Coleman

Does Coleman have to lead the team in receiving this weekend in order for it to be a successful endeavor for him and for the team? No, he doesn’t. The one thing Coleman has to do is be a factor in the game. He can’t spend the evening smothered like a pit master’s rack of ribs, allowing the Chiefs to use one man to take him out while they bracket Buffalo’s top option in wideout Khalil Shakir.

Whether you think Coleman’s issues this season have stemmed from a lack of imagination in the scheme or a lack of talent (count me among the former, for the record), it’s clear that the Bills need him. He’s on the field more than any other receiver because he’s a strong blocker in the run game, but his main job is catching passes. Brady has to find ways to scheme him looks in ways that don’t merely involve 50/50 balls thrown 25 yards downfield to the back shoulder.

Coleman is good on in-breakers in the short-to-intermediate range of the field, and I’d argue he’s better at winning on those types of routes than he is on the deep shots he’s used for most in Buffalo’s offense. If Coleman can secure five of either eight or nine targets for 50 yards on the night, it should provide enough threat where the Bills’ other options should be able to find space.

DE Michael Hoecht

Hoecht was an absolute menace last week, terrorizing friend of the franchise Andy Dalton in his first game back from a PED suspension. Hoecht had 1.5 sacks, three tackles, and a forced fumble on the afternoon, and before we pooh-pooh the performance as happening against a backup quarterback and a weak team, let’s consider Carolina’s pass blocking for a moment. Coming into the game against Buffalo, their quarterbacks had been sacked a total of 12 times in seven games.

Buffalo sacked Dalton seven times last Sunday, and Hoecht was a tremendous part of the reason why. He can be lined up all over the field, and he can do a variety of things that can confuse an offensive line. Maybe the Bills will line him up in the A-Gap on obvious passing downs. Perhaps they’ll line him up as a three-tech defensive tackle on 3rd & Long. Maybe he’ll slot in across from Greg Rousseau or Joey Bosa.

Whatever they do, he brings a certain nasty to the defensive front, and that attitude is going to go a long way towards this Buffalo defense regaining its mojo. Trying to a stop a Chiefs offense that has found its footing after a rough start is going to take a great effort from the defensive line, and Hoecht is going to play a big part in the game plan this week.

CB Maxwell Hairston

I don’t want to put too much on the rookie, but he’s going to play a big role on Sunday. Buffalo signaled a change in how they want to play defense when they drafted Hairston, as he doesn’t necessarily fit the mold of their other corners, who are more cerebral players suited for zone. Christian Benford can play both man and zone, but he doesn’t have the speed to keep up with the league’s fastest receivers… players like Xavier Worthy, for example.

Hairston has the speed, the toughness, and the ball skills to make a difference. He was able to work in on defense last week, making one solid tackle in his NFL debut. Whereas he split time nearly evenly with Tre’Davious White last week, I expect that Hairston will take the lion’s share of the snaps, if not all of them, this week across from Benford. If he plays well, then the Bills actually do match up quite well against Kansas City’s pass-catchers across the board.

Hairston would take Worthy, Benford would take Rashee Rice, Taron Johnson would mix it up with JuJu Smith-Schuster in the slot, and either Cole Bishop or Jordan Poyer could take Travis Kelce. Hairston is, as the kids would say, a “low-key” X-factor for this matchup and for the remainder of the season. This will be a big test for the rookie, but if he answers the bell, it will be a big boost for the Bills’ defense.

Bisonfeather cocktail will up your bartender game for Kansas City at Buffalo Bills

Whether it’s tailgating or homegating, fans of the Buffalo Bills are known to be elite tier when it comes to food. My subconsicous was dead set on not allowing that. I turned to cocktails for Kansas City, having explored their culinary world once or twice a year now for a few seasons. Intrigued by the Horsefeather cocktail, I set out to make a Buffalo version.

The Horsefeather is simple. Rye whiskey, ginger beer, a couple dashes of bitters, and a little lemon juice. How can I make that “Buffalo?” Loganberry syrup was the obvious solution but I did that for my Dawson Knox Blox.

I decided to go a little more abstract. Rather than a “Buffalo” version, I decided to go for a “buffalo” version. You with me? What might an actual buffalo look for in a cocktail? Easy. Grasses. A little wheatgrass addition raises the complexity level and makes a spooky green color just in time for Halloween. It’s not a gimmick either. The wheatgrass adds depth to an already complex drink and enhances the aromatics of the bitters.

This is intended for persons of legal drinking age and if you’re drinking, do so responsibly.

Bisonfeather

Makes: 1 drink
Active Time: 1 minute
Total Time: 1 minute

Ingredients

3-4 dashes Angostura bitters
2 oz rye whiskey
4 oz ginger beer
1 oz wheatgrass

Fresh thyme for garnish (optional)

You will need: A glass

Add 3-4 dashes of bitters to a highball glass.

Pour remainder of ingredients into the glass and stir, swirl, or shake like they taught you in high school chemistry.

Garnish with thyme if you want.

Enjoy!

Wingin’ It Tips

I added the pictures above since this is literally as easy of a recipe as I can give you. I add the bitter first because holy **** do you not want to overdue these things. If you dash too aggressively, this is your opportunity to rinse the glass and start over. I figure for this section I’ll mainly talk a few of my personal bartending choices and ingredient selection so I can add words and justify this as an article.

Let’s circle back to the bitters. The horsefeather uses Angostura bitters, which is a brand I wasn’t familiar with. I picked them up for authenticity for my bisonfeather variant and noticed the label is too big for the bottle. I looked it up and apparently back in the 1870s the two brothers running the company screwed up a rebranding effort and got the bottle/label sizes wrong. It’s 150 years later and they’re still running it that way, which is frankly awesome.

For the ginger beer, I chose a Jamaican style. I’ve been known to listen to reggae on occasion, and who doesn’t know Bob Marley and “Buffalo Soldiers.” If you’re going ginger beer, Jamaican style is always the way to go for flavor and the little nod to a “buffalo” reference — and paying homage to a historical group that was pretty bad*** is a bonus. Fun history fact since I looked up the bitters; the Buffalo Soldiers regiment was founded in 1866, which means the group was around at the same time labels were being messed up in another part of the world.

I’m typically more of a bourbon fan when it comes to whiskey and its variants and honestly haven’t dove into ryes all that much. I selected a brand that claims to be small batch made from rye grain grown in New York and it turns out that I like rye whiskey just as much as bourbon. This might be blasphemy to some, but I’ve yet to find a Scotch I really like. Discuss below.

Finally, why the heck did I add thyme? A couple reason really. The biggest is that I struggle with drink photography. It’s just a glass with liquid. A garnish can go a long way. I still don’t love the pictures, but I think the garnish adds some character. Yeah, that still doesn’t explain thyme specifically. While I have no reason to think a bison would eat thyme, it LOOKS like something they might, and branding is everything. Further, I’m a big fan of gin and absinthe and can appreciate botanicals in drinks. I’m not going to force you to buy thyme (or any of this really), but the little sprigs in the glass did add a little more flair that worked very well with the other ingredients.

One last thing. You might notice I didn’t include directions such as “shake over ice” or “pour over ice.” For home bartending I’m anti-dilution as you shouldn’t have so many bottles that cold storage is a problem. The ginger beer and wheatgrass goes in the fridge, the bitters and rye go in the freezer.

5 Kansas City Chiefs to watch at the Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills face off against their intraconference tormentors this weekend, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs in the latest installment of the two teams’ storied rivalry. Since the 2020 season, Buffalo and Kansas City have met a total of nine times, with the Bills winning four of the games and the Chiefs winning five. All four of Buffalo’s victories have come in regular-season games, while Kansas City has won all four playoff matchups between the two teams in that span.

While the stakes won’t be as high as they were the last time these two teams met in the AFC Championship Game back in January, there are fairly large playoff implications for this matchup. The Chiefs would take their fourth loss of the season, damaging their chase for yet another AFC West Division title. It would also make another No. 1 seed highly unlikely. If the Bills lose this week, it will be their third loss of the season, and they already trail a tough New England Patriots squad in a quest for their sixth-straight AFC East crown.

If the Bills want to come out on top this week, they’ll have to slow a slew of Chiefs. Here are five Kansas City players to watch this week.
_____________________________________________________________________________

QB Patrick Mahomes

The book on beating Mahomes is similar to beating most elite quarterbacks: pressure him up the middle using only your front four and you’re in good shape. The problem, of course, is doing that. If it were easy, then everyone could do it.

Losing defensive tackle Ed Oliver is going to hurt the Bills in their pursuit of this goal, but the additions of defensive end Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi give the Bills a solid, deep defensive line rotation overall. If Buffalo can impact Mahomes early in the game, it could lead to some happy feet and rushed decisions. They’ll need their newcomers (especially Hoecht and Joey Bosa) to provide the pass-rush juice that previous Bills defenses couldn’t provide.

If they can slow Kareem Hunt and Kansas City’s running game, it will allow that defensive front to go all-in on attacking the game’s best quarterback. Slowing Mahomes is essential to victory this weekend.

WR Xavier Worthy

Rashee Rice is clearly Kansas City’s top receiver, but head coach Andy Reid loves to remind people just how smart he is. If he has the chance to feature Worthy, whom the Chiefs acquired via a draft-pick trade with Buffalo, then he’s going to do it.

Preventing Worthy from making splash plays will force the Chiefs to go on long, sustained drives. The second-year man isn’t an elite wideout, but he does have elite speed, and speed kills, especially when a team like the Bills misses tackles in the middle level. I could see some reverses or screens early on to test Buffalo’s gap integrity.

Worthy is the kind of guy who could make one man miss and turn a two-yard loss into a forty-yard gain. The Bills need to keep a lid on him this weekend.

DE George Karlaftis III

As great as the Chiefs’ offense is (and it is a machine) it’s my belief that their defense is even better. The numbers bear that out, as Kansas City has allowed the second-fewest points per game this season and the fourth-fewest yards per game this season.

Karlaftis is an outstanding pass rusher who has given the Bills problems before. He sets the edge well in the run game, has a ridiculous motor, and has enough athleticism to chase down Josh Allen while he scrambles. In the run game, Buffalo is going to use heavy packages to give James Cook blockers, but they might want to consider using some of those heavier personnel packages and going max-protect on play-action passes, especially early, to put doubt in the pass rush’s collective mind.

Karlaftis is a player deserving of double-teams, but the Chiefs have enough studs on the defensive line that you can’t double team all of them. He’ll likely be the responsibility of Spencer Brown for most of the night, but the Chiefs will use him on games and stunts up front, as well.

DT Chris Jones

Speaking of players who have been the bane of Buffalo’s existence, Jones is still elite, and he’s still a guy who can make a play whenever the Chiefs need a big one. Buffalo’s offensive line has been prone to confusion on some of the aforementioned stunts and games that opposing defenses have run, and Jones moves all around the defensive front. He can rush from the three-tech spot just as easily as he can from a nine-tech, and he might even start in one spot and loop around to another place entirely during the course of the play.

If defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is a chess master, Jones is his queen, moving all over the board to destroy opponents when needed. The Bills will need to be aware of No. 95 on Sunday, and he’s the guy I’d double for most of the night.

LB Leo Chenal

Kansas City often uses a spy on Josh Allen — although they didn’t during the regular season last year, leading to Allen gaining 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Chenal is one of the more likely people to draw that “spy” assignment if the Chiefs use one.

Given that either Chenal or Nick Bolton will be tasked with following Allen, the Bills and offensive coordinator Joe Brady have to put them in jeopardy all game. Will they commit to Allen and leave a running back free to release for short passes? Will the Bills attack the short middle of the field on slants or drag routes? Can they give Chenal enough eye candy to make him think one thing before throwing a totally different play at him?

The worst thing that the Bills could do is keep things vanilla. They can’t give Chenal clean reads, and if he does spy, they need to take advantage of Kansas City pulling a player out of coverage. Chenal is a great football player, so he’s going to make some plays. The key for Buffalo is trying to take advantage of the scheme, manipulating it for their benefit.

Buffalo Rumblinks, 10/31: Latest Bills rumors leading up to NFL trade deadline

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has a penchant for pulling off trades to improve his roster, and this year, his team appears to be in need of help at a few positions, notably defensive tackle, safety, cornerback, and wide receiver. The Bills held their second official practice of Week 9, and that means we got another daily injury report. There was good news on the report – and, of course, there was not so good news.

Let’s take a look at the “no-news” first. No one on the Injured Reserve (IR) list had their practice window opened Thursday – which means they probably won’t at all this week. In fairness, it’s just offensive lineman Tylan Grable, who went to IR before the season started (designated to return) with a concussion, and kicker Tyler Bass, who found himself on the IR at the start of Week 1 with a groin/hip injury, who are even eligible to return right now. In this case, no news isn’t good news.

In the other not-so-good news category are defensive tackle DaQuan Jones and linebacker Shaq Thompson. Jones missed yet another day of practice after injuring his calf in Week 6 pregame warmups. Thompson played last week in a rotation with linebacker Joe Andreessen as they made up for the missing Terrel Bernard and Matt Milano.

When head coach Sean McDermott went through the injury rundown before Wednesday’s practice, the linebacker’s name was not one that was mentioned. By the end of the day on Wednesday, he was listed as limited due to a hamstring issue. With a downgrade to DNP on Thursday, it would seem that Thompson may have been injured in practice. Not good news, as it means he will likely not play Sunday – maybe not even next Sunday.

But, as promised, it’s not all bad news from yesterday. While Thompson may be out, it looks as though both Bernard and Milano may be in. Both linebackers have now completed two full days of practice, so, barring any disasters on Friday, we may see the starting band of Bernard, Milano, and Dorian Williams back together Sunday.

There’s more good news, but we need to manage expectations with this one. Wide receiver Joshua Palmer, who injured both his ankle and his knee in Week 6, was upgraded from a DNP to a limited participant on Thursday. While this is good news that we may see Palmer back on the field soon, I wouldn’t be overly hopeful that soon means Sunday. But – don’t forget – wide receiver Gabe Davis is healthy, provides that deep threat the Bills have been missing, knows the playbook, and has three practice squad elevations available.

Other injury news from Thursday includes running back Ray Davis returning after being out due to an illness on Wednesday, and kicker Matt Prater was still limited. Not activating Bass, coupled with no news of the Bills trying out kickers this week, would indicate that Buffalo has confidence that the veteran kicker will be ready for Sunday – or maybe it will be Ray Davis?

Injury designations are released later today. Expect Jones and Thompson to be out. As we do so well in these SB Nation spaces, we’re once again in open thread waters, this time with a murky matchup between the 2-6 Miami Dolphins and 2-5 Baltimore Ravens. It’s fair to say that Miami’s current ship is sinking, but yet they looked pretty good in Week 8. If that Dolphins team shows up tonight, there’s not much the Ravens can do to stop things.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson returns this evening, following a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last few games. Is his return enough to save Baltimore’s season, or are the defensive troubles too much to overcome? As a two-time NFL MVP, if sure feels like Jackson should be able to course-correct with running back Derrick Henry at his side.

However, that’s not what Bills Mafia should want this evening. Tonight? It’s Phins Up! Miami winning would put a severe dent into the Ravens’ already damaged postseason hopes. Though not invincible to Buffalo, it’s in the Bills’ best interests if they don’t have to face Baltimore in January. They’d be very interested in a rematch, and making up for a pair of gut-wrenching losses in Orchard Park, NY.

Here’s your open thread for Week 9 of Thursday Night Football. The now-annual game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs that millions of NFL fans tune in for hits televisions late Sunday afternoon. Of course the biggest draw is always at quarterback, with Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes among the game’s best… ever.

However, no matter what happens between these two football teams, the officials seem to be a talking point in almost every game. It happened last year after Allen was ruled short on an important play that didn’t lose the game, but certainly changed the momentum. So who’s set to officiate the latest regular-season matchup on Sunday? It’s none other than Carl Cheffers and his crew on the call.

Chiefs fans are probably thinking that this is the worst outcome possible. The fan base is under the impression that Cheffers tends to be biased towards opponents of Kansas City. Much of this sentiment stems from the 2016 AFC Divisional Round playoff game where a holding penalty wiped out a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the score in a Chiefs loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the aftermath of that game, tight end Travis Kelce said that Cheffers should never be allowed to wear a referee jersey again.

As for where Cheffers comes into play between KC and Buffalo on this subject? Cheffers was leading the crew that called wide receiver Kadarius Toney for lining up offside, thus negating a Chiefs’ game-winning touchdown against the Bills in 2023. On the flip side, Cheffers was officiating Kansas City’s Christmas game against the Houston Texans last season where Patrick Mahomes seemed to get some pretty favorable calls.

More recently, the Chiefs already had Cheffers’ crew to kick off the season against the Las Angeles Chargers in Brazil. In that game, Kansas City was penalized 10 times. As for the Bills, Cheffers called the Divisional Round playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens during the 2024 season that saw decent officiating all around.

Cheffers isn’t afraid to call offensive holding and false starts, as they are his most-frequent penalty calls in 2025. This doesn’t bode well for the Bills, who lead the league in offensive holding penalties. With Mahomes and Allen there’s always a chance for a roughing-the-passing penalty anytime they drop back. But that might be difficult this time around as Cheffers has only called two of those this season.

Buffalo Bills Week 9 rooting interests

The Buffalo Bills won on Sunday, and they won big with Josh Allen and James Cook (who went over 200 yards on the ground for the first time in his career) sitting out the final quarter as they cruised to a 40-9 win over the Carolina Panthers. Unfortunately, all the teams ahead of the Bills won too, most importantly the New England Patriots.

That means Buffalo’s still sitting a half game out of first place in the AFC East. The Kansas City Chiefs have crept their way up to the seven seed, the Indianapolis Colts have a strong-arm hold on the conference’s one seed, and the Denver Broncos are clinging to the AFC West lead.

So, with all that in mind, here’s a look at what the standings look like before we begin a weekend full of big games.

AFC East Week 9 standings

New England Patriots (6-2)

Buffalo Bills (5-2)

Miami Dolphins (2-6)

New York Jets (1-7)

AFC Playoff Picture heading into Week 9

Indianapolis Colts (7-1)

New England Patriots (6-2)

Denver Broncos (6-2)

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3)

Buffalo Bills (5-2)

Los Angeles Chargers (5-3)

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3)

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3)

Houston Texans (3-4)

Cincinnati Bengals (3-5)

Las Vegas Raiders (2-5)

Baltimore Ravens (2-5)

Cleveland Browns (2-6)

Miami Dolphins (2-6)

New York Jets (1-7)

Tennessee Titans (1-7)

The Chiefs are in the playoff picture this week thanks to a win paired with a Jacksonville bye. If the Jaguars win this week, whoever loses the game between Buffalo and Kansas City is the team looking in from just outside the Playoff Picture window next week. It will be temporary (surely both of these teams will find themselves still playing football in January), but it won’t feel good for Bills Mafia if Buffalo has fallen from one to eight in a month’s time. On the flip side, if the Bills win and the Patriots lose, Buffalo can jump back into the top three.

So, here’s a look at how we’d like to see things go this weekend. Get ready Bills Mafia, it’s going to be a wild weekend!

_____________________________________________________________________________

AFC East Week 9 Bills rooting interests

Buffalo Bills (5-2) over Kansas City Chiefs (5-3), Sunday 4:25 p.m. EST (CBS)

This one goes without saying, but root for the Bills. Yes, over the past several seasons Buffalo has come out on top during the season and been on the wrong end of the scoreboard when facing the Chiefs in the playoffs. We don’t want a reversal, we want to win them both. Obviously, avenging the loss in Orchard Park, NY this past January is going to be a hot topic. Getting a win over a team with a winning record is going to be important too.

Keeping pace (or hopefully surpassing) the Patriots is the real story here. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, the answer is “just win,” but this week, it may take Josh Allen returning to MVP form to get the job done. Go Bills!

Miami Dolphins (2-6) over Baltimore Ravens (2-6), Thursday 8:15 p.m. EDT (Prime Video)

We’ve reached the point of the season where it’s okay to root for division rivals… sometimes. This is one of those times. While the Bills have defeated both of these teams, and they have the same record, the rooting interest here lies in which team has the better chance of being a threat later on.

Let’s face it, the Dolphins, despite a win over the Atlanta Falcons last week, aren’t going to do enough to make the playoffs. The Ravens are getting quarterback Lamar Jackson back this week and could make a push to find themselves in the AFC’s top seven teams by Christmas.

Atlanta Falcons (3-4) over New England Patriots (6-2), Sunday 1 p.m. EST (CBS)

This is on repeat: The Patriots are currently the AFC East’s leaders, and New England fans believe quarterback Drake Maye is the second coming of Tom Brady. The Bills need to do their part to silence all that noise coming from the east.

The Falcons weren’t supposed to beat the Bills, so they could make up for that error by taking down the Patriots too. A Buffalo win coupled with a New England loss would make the division leader board look the way we know it was meant to be.

Week 9 games that impact the Bills

Las Vegas Raiders (2-5) over Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3), Sunday 4:05 p.m. EST (FOX)

How fitting that the NFL has this game scheduled at (practically) the same time as the Bills’ game. As I mentioned above, a Jaguars win means that Buffalo or Kansas City falls to the number eight seed (at least temporarily) — aka the first loser, watching the playoffs from home.

While it would be great to have the Chiefs be “that guy,” we’re going to go with what we do know (nothing), so lets root for the Raiders. We can always reverse stance if the Bills are running away with their game early on.

Tennessee Titans (1-6) over Los Angeles Chargers (5-3), Sunday 1 p.m. EST (CBS)

This one is about keeping pace. Should the Falcons fail to do their job on Sunday, the Bills, with a win, would still be in a Wild Card position. The Chargers are a half game behind Buffalo, so it would be nice to keep them there. Plus, keeping Los Angeles ahead of Kansas City is nice as well.

Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3) over Indianapolis Colts (7-1), Sunday 1 p.m. EST (CBS)

Anything to bring the Colts down a peg, right? An Indianapolis loss, coupled with a Buffalo win, would just separate the two by a half game. At the same time, a Steelers victory added to a Bills victory won’t move Pittsburgh up a notch. Plus, the Bills head to Pittsburgh at the end of November, so a Steelers win would improve Buffalo’s SOV score.

Houston Texans (3-4) over Denver Broncos (6-2), Sunday 1 p.m. EST (Fox)

Yes, not having KC at the top of the AFC West’s leader board has been nice — really nice. But having any team ahead of Buffalo in the conference standings has not been the same. So, a Denver loss plus a Buffalo win (and a New England loss) would take care of all but the Colts. And, if the Bills trump the Chiefs Sunday afternoon, a Broncos loss won’t affect the standings in the West. So, Houston, try not to have any problems.

The rest of the NFL Week 9 Bills rooting interests

Chicago Bears (4-3) over Cincinnati Bengals (3-5)
Carolina Panthers (4-4) over Green Bay Packers (5-1-1)
New Orleans Saints (1-7) over Los Angeles Rams (5-2)
Dallas Cowboys (3-4-1) over Arizona Cardinals (2-5)

Games that do not impact the Bills this week

Minnesota Vikings (3-4) at Detroit Lions (5-2)
San Francisco Giants (5-3) at New York Giants (2-6)
Seattle Seahawks (5-2) at Washington Commanders (3-5)

Teams on Bye
Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

_____________________________________________________________________________

Optimistic AFC standings after Week 9

So, if all the bounces go the Bills’ way and all the right teams win, this is what the standings in the AFC would look like on Tuesday morning:

Indianapolis Colts (7-2)

Buffalo Bills (6-2)

Denver Broncos (6-3)

Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3)

New England Patriots (6-3)

Los Angeles Chargers (5-4)

Kansas City Chiefs (5-4)

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-4)

Houston Texans (4-4)

Las Vegas Raiders (3-5)

Cincinnati Bengals (3-6)

Miami Dolphins (3-6)

Baltimore Ravens (2-6)

Cleveland Browns (2-6)

Tennessee Titans (2-7)

New York Jets (1-7)

_____________________________________________________________________________

Now we know who to root for and, more importantly, who to root against, as we hope to see that the NFL rights itself this weekend.

Go Bills!

Bills Reacts Survey Week 9: WR or DT?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. The Bills are 5-2, and currently seeded fifth in the AFC playoff race, while the Chiefs are 5-3, and holding onto the last playoff spot in the division at seven.

The loser of Sunday’s Week 9 game in Orchard Park, NY will find themselves out of playoff seeding for at least a short time. Kansas City’s been there before, but it would be entirely new territory for a Buffalo team led by head coach Sean McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen.

That speaks to the parity of NFL football, but also the upside down situation of the 2025 season. It’s the New England Patriots sitting atop the AFC East, and holding the two seed in the AFC playoff bracket. The Bills won’t get another crack at them until late in the season, which means it’s going to be a fight to take back their crown.

It’s no secret that Buffalo could use some help along the way. That is, beyond other teams’ results on game days. To an outsider and many analysts, the Bills’ passing game appears to be functioning at least decently well. To those of you reading this as fans, you know better. The wide receivers can’t gain a lick of separation, and Allen looks to be regressing. The team’s top wide receiver is Khalil Shakir and he makes magic happen after the catch. Unfortunately, it appears as though offensive coordinator Joe Brady doesn’t seem to be able to put second-year wide receiver Keon Coleman in the best spots to succeed. Gabe Davis lies in waiting now off injury and part of the practice squad, so perhaps his time is now.

On defense, the injuries continue piling up. It’s especially a concern at defensive tackle, where One Bills Drive just had to sign a player who has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver is out indefinitely after having surgery to repair a torn biceps, joining a long list of interior D-line players who have been placed on Injured Reserve. Adding another player to the defensive line room feels like overkill with all the assets planted there, but they are thin with Jordan Phillips now part of the 53-man roster.

With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching (November 4) and the Bills in need of reinforcements, a trade seems to make a lot of sense. Anyone they make a move for would have to make sense, financially. They currently have less than $2 million in available cap space, which means contract restructures enter the chat for anyone other than a player on a veteran minimum deal.

But if you could only pick one player between wide receiver and defensive tackle, what’s your priority? It’s either/or, and only these two positions in this poll! Be sure to vote below, also weighing in on our weekly confidence poll about the direction of this year’s Buffalo Bills.

Vote now!
Please take our survey

If you would like to create a banner that links to this page (i.e. this validation result), do the following:
