19.
 20.
Finally healthy, Means diced up the Red lineup on Saturday and looked like a timely upgrade for the Orioles rotation.

The return of John Means this past weekend may not have been as highly anticipated as that of Kyle Bradish a few days prior, but the results were even better. Over seven shutout innings the 31-year-old southpaw allowed just three hits, struck out eight, and did not issue any walks. It was a dominant performance that may have also reflected his well-earned veteran sensibilities.

 21.
Means is one of the the longest tenured members of the team, having pitched in each of the Orioles last seven seasons. It doesn’t always feel that way because over the last two years he has appeared in just six total games, the result of Tommy John surgery, setbacks during rehab, and a delayed start to 2024. But he is right there with the likes of Austin Hays, Anthony Santander, and Cedric Mullins as guys that have been through the depths of an organizational rebuild and come out the other side.

 22.
Just add it to the list of extreme career phases that Means has already undergone. He beat the odds to become a big leaguer as an 11th-round draft pick. As a rookie in 2019 he became an all-star. He entered 2020 with a big velocity gain (thanks to some mattress throwing practice), but struggled with home runs. In 2021, he tossed the best no-hitter in big league history. And then in 2022, just as the Orioles were ready to turn the corner as a franchise, he got hurt. Not to mention the various physical setbacks he has had since then, including a rocky month of rehab that had some questioning his return altogether.

 23.
But the important thing is that he is back, and not a moment too soon. Although the Orioles rotation wasn’t exactly in crisis, the recent injuries to Grayson Rodriguez and Tyler Wells, paired with the uncertainty around Bradish’s long-term health left them in need of an immediate upgrade. A healthy Means is exactly that, especially if he can pitch anywhere close to the level he provided on Saturday in Cincinnati.

 24.
The most important pitch for Means is his changeup. That has been the case for his entire big league career. Although he made his debut late in the 2018 season, it wasn’t until 2019 that he truly came into focus for Orioles fans. On March 31 of that year, Means came on in relief of a poor Dylan Bundy start. Means would stick around for 3.1 innings that day, heavily featuring his change. The offering made up 46% percent of his pitches and had a whiff rate of 54% that day. The Bronx Bombers looked flummoxed, the O’s won the game, and Means would work his way into the rotation just a few weeks later.

 25.
Years later, the dominance of his changeup remains. It was Means’ most-used pitch in his 2024 debut, accounting for 36% of his pitches. Of the 16 swings he got, eight were whiffs, a 50% rate. The pitch is an equalizer against right-handed batters, especially when Means can locate it down and away.

 26.
The characteristics of the pitch have shifted over time. As the years go on, Means is getting less spin on the ball and, until this weekend, it also experienced continual velocity drops. At the same time, he is getting more chases on it, going from 33.7% chase rate in 2021 to 45% against Cincy.

 27.
The one pitch that may be more interesting to watch, however, is Means’ four-seam fastball. He threw just 22 of them on Saturday, making up 25.9% of his total pitches. That was the lowest fastball usage of his entire career in a single game.

 28.
There could be several reasons for that. One is just how right-handed the Reds lineup was that day. Means faced 23 batters, 21 of them were right-handed (or switch hitters hitting from the right side). In that instance, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to load up on fastballs when you have a killer change like Means does.

 29.
And of course, it could be a reaction to Means not having the sort of velocity he once did. Back in 2020, after all of that mattress throwing in quarantine, he averaged 93.8 mph on the pitch, getting up into the high 90s occasionally. On Saturday he sat at 91.8 mph, right in line with where his fastball was in 2023 and ‘22, but a few ticks below his career peak. Means has been inching away from his four-seamer for several years now, so this could also be a continuation of that trend.

 30.
The four-seamer worked well enough for Means in his season debut. Its purpose is not to blow hitters away, but to play well with his changeup and keep hitters honest. In that regard, it was outstanding.

 31.
If Means is going to complete his transition into a full-on finesse lefty, he will need to lean on more than just his change. Perhaps we were provided a glimpse of that this weekend as well. His slider was prominent. He used it more in this game than he has in any single outing since his rookie season in 2019. And he might be turning to his knuckle curve more as well. It accounted for 16.5% of his pitches on Saturday. The most he has ever used it across an entire season was 16.4% in 2021, although there have been individual games in which it has been more of a feature.

 32.
Obviously, we will need more than one game’s worth of data before we make any serious analysis that Means is a new pitcher. But this was one inspiring performance, especially compared to where he was late in 2023 when it never really felt like Means was right. While the top level numbers were fine, the peripherals were a tad scary.

 33.
Across four starts late last year, Means had just 3.80 strikeouts per nine innings and a whiff rate of 16.4%. A lot of balls were being put in play, and yet he had just a .130 BABIP. That is a recipe for regression. On Saturday, he had the Reds whiffing 43.2% of the time and a slightly more realistic BABIP of .200, still much lower than his career .240 BABIP, but at least closer to reality.

 34.
Again, these are small sample sizes compared to even smaller ones. We shouldn’t overreact one way or another. But in this instance, that is all we have to go on for a pitcher that has played so little these last few years.

 35.
It wasn’t all that long ago that Means was the de facto ace of this Orioles staff. Time has marched on without him, and he has been usurped in that role by others on the roster. But you had better believe that if Means is healthy he is going to do everything he can to be handed the ball to start a playoff game for the organization he has been a part of for nearly a decade. In order to earn that distinction he will need to out-pitch several others that have done more in recent years. But if that debut is any indication, the veteran is more than capable of doing just that.

 52.
Despite striking out five, Bruce Zimmermann could have been better for Norfolk on Sunday. | Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

 53.

 54.
 55.
Bowie got rained out, and none of the other Orioles affiliates managed to impose their will on the opposition.

Triple-A: Nashville Sounds (MIL) 6, Norfolk Tides 3

 56.
Bruce Zimmermann had the start for Norfolk, and it certainly could have gone better: he allowed four runs in five innings. However, only one of those runs was earned, as the Tides were responsible for four errors. Ouch. After Zimm, scoreless outings were tossed by Luis González and Wandisson Charles, but Bryan Baker surrendered two more runs in the ninth, on a two-out walk and home run.

 57.
The Tides notched five hits in the game: a home run, three doubles and a single. Hudson Haskin had the long ball, in the second. Coby Mayo (#3 CC prospect) hit an RBI double. Jackson Holliday (#1) doubled and walked twice.

 58.
Box Score

 59.
Double-A: Erie SeaWolves v. Bowie Baysox – CANCELLED (rain)

 60.
A bummer—the Baysox were all set to play tonight as the “Cangrejos Fantasmas” (Ghost Crabs) but the game got canceled due to inclement weather. I hope they get a chance to inhabit their alter egos some other time.

 61.
High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 5, Aberdeen IronBirds 2

 62.
Here are three tough ways to give up a run: first, Aberdeen starter Levi Wells surrendered a run-scoring balk in the first inning. Then, in the fifth, catcher Creed Willems threw past the third base bag on an attempted steal, allowing the Cyclones to score. Then, Aberdeen reliever Graham Firoved walked in a run before allowing two more on an RBI double.

 63.
Aberdeen’s two runs came on a Nick Maton triple to score Enrique Bradfield Jr. (Maton also singled and walked twice). Bradfield Jr. scored again in the seventh on a Mac Horvath single. Matthew Etzel singled and so did Creed Willems.

 64.
Box Score

 65.
Low-A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (HOU) 5, Delmarva Shorebirds 2

 66.
This was a start-by-committee and one pitcher, Jacob Cravey, got stuck with all the earned runs against. Cravey walked two, allowed three hits, and threw two wild pitches… in a single inning. He steadied himself for two scoreless innings, but in the seventh Cravey allowed two runners and Grabiel Salazar came in and let them both score. Ah, well.

 67.
Opener Trey Gibson threw three dominant innings, though, striking out six. And closer Randy Berigüete kept Fayetteville off the board in the ninth.

 68.
The offense put up eight hits, Baltimore-born Maxwell Costes notching three of them to push his average to .344. Costes singled home the Shorebirds’ first run in the second. In the eighth, Thomas Sosa (#27) doubled and scored on a groundout. Kevin Guerrero went 2-for-3.

 69.
Box Score

 95.

 96.
 97.
Orioles starting pitchers were flawless as the Birds rolled to their third sweep of the year.

Good morning, Camden Chatters.

 98.
So, the Orioles: great starting rotation, or the greatest starting rotation?

 99.
Over the past week, the Birds’ starting staff has been practically unhittable. After taking three of four from the Yankees — in which O’s starters gave up only five runs between them — the Birds hurlers upped their game even more in Cincinnati with three flawless performances. Cole Irvin (6.1 IP), John Means (7 IP), and Dean Kremer (6 IP) combined for 19.1 scoreless innings of work against the Reds, which, put together with the Yankees series, gives the O’s rotation a 1.05 ERA over the past seven games. That’s, uh, pretty good! Alex Church recapped the latest brilliant outing, Kremer’s mastery of the Reds to complete a three-game sweep yesterday.

 100.
Means and Kyle Bradish haven’t missed a beat in their return to the rotation, helping replace the injured Grayson Rodriguez, who began this streak of excellence with his 5.2 scoreless innings against the Yankees last Monday. Oh, and the O’s bullpen has been pretty fantastic, too, allowing only three runs in those seven games, giving the Orioles pitching staff a 1.14 ERA. The Orioles have given up two runs or fewer in seven consecutive games, the first time they’ve done so since 1980, as MASN’s Steve Melewski tweeted.

 101.
And did we mention the Orioles’ offense is also doing amazing things? With Anthony Santander’s game-breaking grand slam yesterday, the O’s now have eight hitters with five or more home runs. According to the great Sarah Langs, it’s nearly unprecedented for a team to have eight 5+ HR hitters before their 35th game of the season. It’s been accomplished only twice before in MLB history.

 102.
It’s been a very, very good week for Orioles baseball, and now they’ll get two days off in the next four, with a brief two-game interleague rivalry series in D.C. sandwiched in between. The Nationals have been surprisingly scrappy this year, exceeding expectations by clawing their way up to a .500 record. Still, the way the O’s are playing right now, no opponent should be too difficult to handle.

 103.
Links

 104.
Rodriguez begins a throwing program, plus other pregame notes from Cincy - Steve Melewski
Grayson Rodriguez is working his way back from his shoulder inflammation, which means eventually the Orioles will again have to figure out how to squeeze so many good starting pitchers into a five-man rotation. It’s not a bad problem to have.

 105.
How Orioles’ Jacob Webb went from waiver claim to dominant - The Baltimore Sun
I’ll admit I didn’t have any particular confidence in Jacob Webb as a useful reliever when the season began, but he’s sure been silencing the doubters like me.

 106.
Dean Kremer continues Orioles’ run of masterful pitching - The Baltimore Banner
Another incredible O’s pitching performance yesterday was marred only by Mike Baumann struggling to throw strikes with an 11-run lead. With all due respect to my birthday buddy, he really stands out in a bad way on this otherwise impressive staff.

 107.
Orioles birthdays and history

 108.
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! One member of the 2024 Orioles has a birthday today: Yohan Ramírez turns 29. He appeared in five games for the Birds this season but is currently in DFA purgatory. Hope you enjoy your day anyway, Yohan. Former Orioles born on this day include outfielder Gerardo Parra (37), utility man Mike Kinkade (51), left-hander Tom Bolton (62), and the late infielder Leo Burke (b. 1934, d. 2023), a Hagerstown native who signed with the O’s as an amateur free agent in 1957.

 109.
On this day in 1984, Cal Ripken Jr. hit for the cycle in the Orioles’ 6-1 win over the Rangers at Arlington Stadium. Cal began the cycle with the toughest hit, an RBI triple in the third, then singled in the fifth, doubled in the seventh, and capped it off with a solo homer in the ninth. At the time, Cal was just the second player in Orioles history to hit for the cycle, a list that is now up to seven.

 110.
And on this date in 2012, the Orioles played the extra-innings epic at Fenway Park known affectionately as the Chris Davis Game. The O’s, in a 6-6 tie, got 10.2 sensational innings out of their bullpen before running out of pitchers in the 16th. Buck Showalter turned to his designated hitter Chris Davis — who was 0-for-8 with five strikeouts as a hitter that day — to make his first career pitching appearance, and he befuddled the Red Sox with two scoreless innings, including a meme-worthy strikeout of Adrian Gonzalez. Davis earned the win when the O’s went ahead in the top of the 17th on an Adam Jones home run. That was the moment when it appeared something special was going on with the 2012 Orioles, which turned out to be very true.

 129.
 130.
Dean Kremer did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning, and Baltimore capped the sweep with an 11-1 victory.

Recently, Baltimore’s starters are pitching like they don’t want to leave the rotation. Cole Irvin extended his scoreless inning streak to 20.2 on Friday. John Means followed with a seven-inning statement during his first appearance of the year. Today, Dean Kremer took his turn.

 131.
Kremer took the mound in Cincinnati and did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning. He continued a dominant stretch of pitching by tossing six scoreless frames, and the Orioles capped a series sweep with an 11-1 victory at Great American Ballpark.

 132.
The Orioles provided Kremer with an early lead after two quick outs in the first. Ryan Mountcastle bounced a double high off the left field wall, and Anthony Santander drove in the first run of the game with a base hit up the middle. Jordan Westburg, batting fifth against Reds’ starter Nick Lodolo, followed with an opposite field homer that carried over the right-field fence.

 133.
The two-out lightening immediately provided Kremer a cushion. He delivered a shutdown first and quickly settled into a groove. Cincinnati hitters struggled for the third consecutive game, and Kremer kept Reds’ hitters off balance while living in the mid-90s.

 134.
Baltimore’s offense made sure the high-leverage relievers received a welcomed day of rest. Adley Rutschman extended the lead to four with a two-out double in the fifth. The extra-base hit marked a season-high four runs allowed for Lodolo.

 135.
Kremer finally allowed a single to Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and Jonathan India followed with a one-out walk. Both runners advanced on a deep fly out to center, but Kremer had the answer during his only test of the day. Kremer generated a harmless pop out in foul territory from Santiago Espinal, and the Reds left the inning empty handed.

 136.
Kremer had struggled against hitters during their third trip through the order, but he kept Brandon Hyde in the dugout today. The 28-year-old used high fastballs to strikeout Luke Maile and Will Benson with full counts in the sixth. Reds phenom Elly De La Cruz hoped to finally get something going, but Kremer sent him down looking with a pitch on the inside corner.

 137.
Albert Suárez did leave the rotation after John Means and Kyle Bradish returned this week, but he pitched like a guy looking to stay on the roster. Suárez tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless ball during his first relief appearance with the Birds.

 138.
With Suárez picking up where Kremer left off, the Orioles’ lineup elected to put things out of reach. Ryan McKenna snuck a ball over the left field fence to make it 5-0 in just his eighth at bat of the season.

 139.
Ramón Urías doubled, and Rutschman made it 6-0 with two-out single to left. The Orioles scored five of their first six runs with two outs, and Baltimore continued to look comfortable against the Reds bullpen.

 140.
Baltimore kept its foot on the gas and poured on five more runs in the ninth. Colton Cowser drove in McKenna with an opposite field double, and Santander provided the exclamation point with a grand slam from the left side of the plate.

 141.
The Reds finally got on the board after Mike Baumann entered an 11-0 game and elected to walk the first two batters he faced. Baumann eventually recovered to end the game, and the Orioles left with plenty of momentum to carry into next week.

 142.
Kremer spoke after the game about following suit from the other starters and pitching to his strengths. He mentioned having a weapon for every type of hitter, and pointed out the importance of learning during a start as opposed to waiting until after the outing to improve.

 143.
“I think we have the potential to be the best team in the big leagues,” Kremer said. The righty quickly credited the offense before mentioning the pitching staff putting together good performances.

 144.
The bats demonstrated a complete performance with eight of nine position players recording a hit. Santander broke out of a slump with a massive 3-for-4 effort, and both McKenna and Urías reached base multiple times. Urías finished 2-for-3 with a HBP and three runs scored.

 145.
The high run total excused three instances of base runners getting picked off at first base. Jorge Mateo finished 0-4 with three strikeouts, but his teammates did plenty at the plate.

 146.
The Orioles get the day off tomorrow before traveling to Washington on Tuesday. The Orioles have the best record in the American League at 23-11. Baltimore could end the day with the best record in baseball if the Giants manage to beat the Phillies tonight.

 169.
The Orioles look to complete a three-game sweep with Dean Kremer on the mound in Cincinnati.

Baltimore will look to get the brooms out today in Cincinnati. The Orioles took the first two games despite tallying only five runs. Fortunately, the Birds held Cinci to only one run over the last two days.

 170.
Dean Kremer will look to continue a dominant stretch on the mound. Kremer limited Kansas City to two runs over seven innings his last time out.

 171.
The Birds could benefit from a breakout at the plate. Closer Craig Kimbrel will be unavailable after working consecutive games and failing to get the job done last night. Yennier Cano pitched in the first two games but only needed three pitches on Friday.

 172.
The Orioles will look to get the job done without their strongest lineup. Ryan McKenna and Ramón Urías will both start against left-hander Nick Lodolo. Colton Cowser will get the start in left, with Anthony Santander completing the outfield.

 173.
Jorge Mateo will start at short with Gunnar Henderson slotting in as the designated hitter. Adley Rutschman will catch after James McCann handled the duties last night. Ryan Mountcastle will play first base with Jordan Westburg standing to his right.

 174.
Lodolo enters the game 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA through four games.

 206.
 207.
The only winners on the farm last night were the Delmarva Shorebirds

Triple-A: Nashville Sounds (MIL) 5, Norfolk Tides 2

 208.
The Tides had just three hits in the game and Daniel Johnson knocked in both runs. He hit a sac fly and had an RBI single. The other two hits in the game came from Billy Cook and Kyle Stowers. Jackson Holliday (CC prospect #1) reached base once with a walk. Coby Mayo (#3) had a rare bad day. Not only did he go hitless but he struck out four times. As a team, the Tides struck out a whopping 18 times.

 209.
Starting pitcher Garrett Stallings gave up two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings and relief pitcher Dillon Tate, who I expect we’ll see back in Baltimore soon, gave up two runs in the seventh inning.

 210.
Box Score

 211.
Double-A: Erie SeaWolves (DET) 8, Bowie Baysox 4

 212.
Seth Johnson (#11) did not have a good night. He pitched into the fourth and had traffic on the bases in every inning. He gave up a leadoff home run and ultimately gave up three runs on four hits and two walks. He threw 63 pitches, 34 for strikes. Relief pitcher Carlos Tavera was responsible for the other five runs. He walked six batters in 3.1 innings.

 213.
Bowie got on the board in the third with Anthony Servideo’s third home run of the year, a solo shot. Servideo also doubled in a run in the ninth inning. He felt a triple short of the cycle in the game. Samuel Basallo (#2) singled twice in the game and picked up an RBI in the bottom of the ninth. Jud Fabian (#14) was 0-for-5; Dylan Beavers (#8) did not play.

 214.
Box Score

 215.
High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 4, Aberdeen IronBirds 0

 216.
Through four innings, Jackson Baumeister allowed just a single and two walks and didn’t have more than one baserunner in an inning. In the fifth, though, things went south fast. Baumester’s third walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases. A HBP knocked in the first run. Baumeister was lifted from the game then, but relief pitcher Bradley Brehmer allowed all three inherited runners to score.

 217.
The offense had just five hits and could never put together a rally. Elio Prado had the only multi-hit game in the lineup, including a double. Creed Willems went 1-for-4.

 218.
Box Score

 219.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 3, Fayetteville Woodpeckers (HOU) 1

 220.
Starting pitcher Nestor German had a great night. He struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and did not walk a batter. His final line included one unearned run but it was a batter who reached on an error in the fifth inning and scored after he left the game.

 221.
The offense scored three runs on just three hits, aided by two errors from the other team. Thomas Sosa (#27) reached on an error in the first, stole a base, and scored on a single from Aron Estrada. Sosa walked and stole another base in the third inning and came in to score another run.

 222.
Box Score

 223.
Today’s Schedule:

 224.

 225.
Norfolk @ Nashville, 3:05. Starter: Bruce Zimmermann

 249.
Craig Kimbrel Discourse is available for those who wish to partake, even as the Orioles won another one

Hello, friends.

 250.
The Orioles! Okay, I might still need to get my breath back to normal after holding it through a more hectic ninth inning last night than any of us would like, but a win is a win. John Means looked great (against what is admittedly a terrible Reds offense) as he made his 2024 season debut, pitching seven shutout innings, and the O’s held it together in the ninth inning even as Craig Kimbrel couldn’t complete the save. Check out Andrea’s recap of the game for more on the lovely totals.

 251.
No ground was gained in the AL East due to the Tigers once again not doing a solid for the Orioles in their own series against the Yankees. The Orioles maintain a one-game division lead over their closest chaser after improving to 22-11 with last night’s win. That is once again a pace for 108 wins over a full season. At this point, just a touch over 20% of the season has been played.

 252.
There is a lot to be excited about with the team right now. Things are going great with the rotation. Means’s debut went well, and Kyle Bradish looked enough like his 2023 self to satisfy us back on Thursday. Large portions of the lineup are hitting well, though there are some prolonged slumpers, including Cedric Mullins, Anthony Santander, and Colton Cowser.

 253.
Games like last night’s 2-1 win also set up another round of Kimbrel discourse. What should the Orioles do with the guy? He looked great on Friday night after getting four days rest! He didn’t look as bad (to me) last night compared to the way he pitched against Oakland, but the results definitely weren’t there.

 254.
Perhaps more importantly to consider going forward, Brandon Hyde was not willing to just let Kimbrel be the guy who was staying in no matter what. The way the game played out, with Means going seven innings and Cionel Pérez pitching the eighth, Yennier Cano was available as a backup option. Once things started to get out of hand, Kimbrel got the hook. This worked out for the best on Saturday.

 255.
Are they just not going to be able to pitch Kimbrel in consecutive games from here on? It seems impossible to figure that they can manage that from now until what we hope will be multiple playoff series. Kimbrel had done well with the second game of pitching on consecutive days in April. It didn’t happen last night and I’m glad we didn’t find out if Kimbrel would have pulled it off.

 256.
I can make one bold prediction for you: Whatever happens today, Kimbrel won’t be pitching. Worry about him again on Tuesday at the earliest. The Orioles only very rarely pitched guys three days in a row a year ago and Kimbrel sure isn’t going to be one of the exceptions after last night. I’m not sure we’ll see Cano either, though he only threw three pitches on Friday before adding 14 more yesterday, so that’s a bit more possible. Should the Orioles bring a narrow lead into the late innings, prepare for High Leverage Jacob Webb to return.

 257.
The Orioles will be going for a sweep of the Reds behind Dean Kremer in a 4:10 start. It’s a later than usual Sunday start due to the Flying Pig Marathon. Really. Nick Lodolo gets the ball for Cincy against the O’s. He’s a lefty who brings a 1.88 ERA over four starts into this series finale.

 258.
Around the blogO’sphere

 259.
How Gunnar Henderson became an early MVP candidate (ESPN)
They noticed us for something positive! I’m not used to it yet.

 260.
The Orioles are running out of lineup spots (FanGraphs)
Dan Szymborski’s article begins with this line: “It’s a great time to be a fan of the Baltimore Orioles.” Yeah! He’s particularly impressed by the team’s talent that is aged 26 and younger, a group that’s not matched by any other team’s similarly-aged talent.

 261.
Gunnar Henderson shows off custom Star Wars Day bat (Orioles.com)
If you have a particular kind of Star Wars nerd in your life, you may have noticed that yesterday’s date, May 4, is marked with some assorted festivities. Gunnar got himself a custom (not game-legal) bat. There seem to be at least a few Star Wars nerds in the Orioles clubhouse.

 262.
Hyde on Means’s return and recent stolen base success (School of Roch)
The manager said there’s no particular emphasis on getting more stolen bases, that’s just the way that things have played out.

 263.
Union Park, home to the Orioles in the 1800s, finally gets recognition (The Baltimore Sun)
The current franchise is not particularly connected to it, but it’s always cool to remember that there IS Orioles history in Baltimore dating back two centuries ago.

 264.
Birthdays and Orioles anniversaries

 265.
Today in 2021, John Means pitched a no-hitter against the Mariners. It was a unique one in that the only thing preventing it from being a perfect game was a dropped third strike wild pitch allowing a runner to reach, who was erased when he then tried to steal a base.

 266.
There are two former Orioles who were born on this day. They are: 2022 reliever Beau Sulser, and 1955 two-game pitcher Chuck Locke.

 267.
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday to you! Your birthday buddies for today include: philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (1813), political theorist Karl Marx (1818), world-traveling journalist Nellie Bly (1864), actress Danielle Fishel (1981), actor Henry Cavill (1983), and singer-songwriter Adele (1988).

 268.
On this day in history...

 269.
In 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte died on the island of Saint Helena, his exile for the previous six years after the first exile to Elba did not prove far enough. Saint Helena is located over 1,800 kilometers west of the nearest African nations.

 270.
In 1862, Mexican general Ignacio Zaragoza led a force outnumbered 10-to-1 that defeated an invading French army in the Battle of Puebla. The day’s date in Spanish, Cinco de Mayo, retains cultural significance stemming from this battle on into today.

 271.
In 1961, the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission crewed by Alan Shepard was a success, launching Shepard into outer space in a 15 minute flight that made Shepard the first American in space. He returned to space a decade later, walking on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 mission.

 272.
In 1973, Secretariat won that year’s Kentucky Derby with a record time, still standing today, of 1 minute and 59.4 seconds. The 150th edition of the Derby ran yesterday, with 18-1 longshot Mystik Dan taking the race in a three-way photo finish that took 2 minutes and 3.3 seconds.

 273.
**

 274.
And that’s the way it is in Birdland on May 5. Have a safe Sunday. Go O’s!

 293.
One particularly cruel thing about the timing of John Means’s UCL injury two years ago is that it robbed him of the opportunity to be a part of both the team’s reversal in fortunes from June onwards in the 2022 season, as well as the chance to be a part of the great 101-win Orioles of 2023 except for a handful of September starts.

 294.
Means was a fantastic pitcher through the dark years, including his incredible individual achievement of throwing the no-hitter three years ago. That year, Means starts were one of the few things to look forward to on a regular basis about the team. It was natural to latch onto him as a highlight, and to come up with puns involving his name. John Means what? The answer was John Means Business. There was even a bobblehead giveaway and everything.

 295.
Our friends at BreakingT came out with a great John Means shirt during that 2021 season, and now that he’s back, it’s just as great. The year may have changed, but John still Means Business. This MLBPA-licensed shirt is available in adult sizes small through 3XL as both a t-shirt and a hoodie, and the same with youth sizes small to large. You can just tell everyone you’ve had it all along. How are they going to know?

 296.
BreakingT’s shirts are usually available in the team store at Camden Yards, but they’re going to cost you more there, even if you count shipping. If you like the look of any of these designs, either old or new for 2024, get them cheaper here and support your hard-working Camden Chat site manager - which is to say, me - in the process. Thank you for your consideration.

 298.
Fresh for this season is a design that shows some love to the new Orioles homer hydration station. We’ve gotten to see it in action in its maximum glory, with four guys taking a drink from four different hoses after a grand slam, and it’s great. The O’s took last year’s water celebrations to another level this season.

 300.
Maybe you don’t feel like explaining the whole origin of the hydration station to the non-Orioles fans in your life. As a habitual avoider of conversations that seem like they might be awkward, I get it. More straightforward is this 2024 edition of the Birdland acrostic shirt, including player names we’ll hopefully see doing good things all year:
