20.
Who chould the Saints play against in the first home game?

The New Orleans Saints kicked off the 2023 season with a defensive slugfest, edging out the Tennessee Titans 16-15 at the Caesars Superdome. In a game dominated by field goals, it was the Saints’ defense and rookie kicker Blake Grupe who emerged as the heroes.

 21.
The 2024 NFL season hold the same type of excitement that culminates in New Orleans with Super Bowl LIX, and the Saints will be eager to kick things off in style to start a strong march for the big game. The 2023 season left the Saints with a bittersweet taste. A 9-8 record wasn’t a disaster, but it wasn’t enough to reach the playoffs. Now, with the offseason in full swing, Saints fans are eager to see how the team will bounce back in 2024. But who should they face in that crucial first game? Here are my thoughts:

A win would set the tone for divisional dominance, while a loss wouldn’t necessarily be a season-ender. The tension between these two teams is ALWAYS fun to watch. Plus, Saints fans do love “Falcons Hate Week”.

 33.
Houston Texans: This matchup is a wishful one. A matchup that’s happening this year. The Texans rarely play the Saints, but when they do, it’s a battle between neighboring stepsiblings. The crowd that this matchup generated in 2023 was intense. From the preseason game in the Caesars Superdome to the regular season game at NRG, this odd competitive match-up is always a crowd attraction. With how Coach Demeco Ryans has constructed the Texans for the 2024 which garnered a lot of media attention, a game with these two would have definitely been a big viewership grab in the Texas/Louisiana fan market.

A week 1 matchup in the Superdome combined with electric with energy, would be a fantastic way to start the season. The Cowboys / Saints rivalry has been played 31 times, with the Dallas Cowboys winning 18 games and the New Orleans Saints winning 13 games. The challenge of facing Dak Prescott and the returning Ezekial Elliott on offense would be a significant test for the Saints’ revamped defense with their current additions.

The Bucs are consistently a strong team, and a tough opening game could set an interesting tone for the season. Since the Saints play Tampa Bay twice a year, anyway, spreading out these divisional matchups can create a more balanced and interesting schedule. With them both having a 9-8 record last year, kicking off a rival game with the Bucs would most definitely get the season off to a good start.

 66.
 67.
How does that change the season outlook?

On Tuesday, May 14, the NFL released the strength of the schedule for each of the 32 teams. The New Orleans Saints have an opponent win percentage of .453, tied only with the Atlanta Falcons.

 68.
This makes it two years in a row that the strength of the schedule for the Saints is among the easiest in the league. Last year, the strength of the schedule was .427, ranking 31st in the NFL. The team unfortunately failed to capitalize on that opportunity, finishing the season at 9-8 and missing the playoffs. New Orleans will hope to rectify that mistake in 2024.

 69.
How can they do that?

 74.
 75.
 76.

 77.
Well first off, it’ll be with their brand-new offense. In February, the Saints hired 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak as their new offensive coordinator. Just watch a clip of the 49ers offense from last year to get an idea of what the Saints offense of tomorrow looks like. The hiring of Kubiak was part of a massive overhaul to the offensive coaching staff. Tight end coach Clancy Barone and offensive assistant Jahri Evans are some of the few who remain from 2023’s offensive staff.

 78.
Secondly, their defense is as good as ever and has even slightly improved. Last year it was already among the best in the NFL, and that returning cast of characters is really helping the next season’s outlook. The additions have also been good, with the drafting of Kool-Aid McKinstry and the signing of Chase Young being some of the highlights in that category.

 79.
The opportunity that’s presenting itself to New Orleans right now is incredible, especially given the fact that this also happened last year. If the Saints can capitalize on this, they’ll have a season that ends in the playoffs.

 99.
 100.
New signings create a slew of options, but are they reliable options as well?

The New Orleans Saints have a million combinations to choose from while crafting their 2024 starting offensive line.

 101.
Although the OL has gained depth over the past few months, the only clear starting addition is rookie Taliese Fuaga. Creating a starting lineup may be challenging for new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and offensive line coach John Benton.

 102.
You might notice that every left guard option reads “Udoh/Saldiveri/Patrick/Lemieux.” That’s simply because no one has a clue which of these players will get the starting gig. None of them have been consistently healthy and starting at left guard during their careers and all of them are new to the Saints. The training camp battle for left guard will be one to watch closely.

 103.
Here are three potential starting lineups for the New Orleans Saints 2024 offensive line.

 104.
Option #1 - The “Best Five Out”

 105.
LT: Fuaga

 106.
LG: Udoh/Saldiveri/Patrick/Lemieux

 107.
C: McCoy

 108.
RG: Ruiz

 109.
RT: Ramczyk

 110.
This appears to be the most ideal option based on talent and health. History cautions moving a rookie tackle to a different side, but if Ramczyk is healthy, Fuaga needs to be starting. The Saints have already been testing Fuaga’s ability to transition from RT (his position at Oregon State) during Rookie Minicamp. Again, the left guard position is still a huge question mark. Olisaemeka Udoh, Nick Saldiveri, Shane Lemieux, and Lucas Patrick all have experience at LG but are still not routine starters in this position.

 111.

 112.

 113.
Lucas Patrick has predominately played the interior positions and has good versatility there.

Career snaps by position, per PFF:

Center: 1,964
Right guard: 1,189
Left guard: 628
Left tackle: 3
— Nick Underhill (@nick_underhill) May 12, 2024
 114.

 115.
 116.
 117.

 118.
Option #2 - Ramczyk’s Out and Fuaga Stays Right

 119.
LT: Penning/Young

 120.
LG: Udoh/Saldiveri/Patrick/Lemieux

 121.
C: McCoy

 122.
RG: Ruiz

 123.
RT: Fuaga

 124.
This option reflects Derek Carr’s worst fear: Ryan Ramczyk sits out 2024 due to injury. The positive about this option is that Fuaga is placed within his RT comfort zone. The negative is that Trevor Penning or Landon Young gets another shot at left tackle. After a questionable first two seasons, Penning is on thin ice, but James Hurst believes that new offensive line coach John Benton could be career-changing for the former first-round pick. Young was decent last season, but perhaps not in a starting role.

 125.

 126.

 127.
The #Saints are expected to sign former #Vikings G/T Oli Udoh to a 1-year deal, per source.

He has 18 career starts. pic.twitter.com/gDs4Jgh9MJ
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) March 18, 2024
 128.

 129.
 130.
 131.

 132.
Option #3 - Ramczyk’s Out and Penning’s a liability

 133.
LT: Fuaga

 134.
LG: Udoh/Saldiveri/Patrick/Lemieux

 135.
C: McCoy

 136.
RG: Ruiz

 137.
RT: Young

 138.
If Ramczyk’s injury persists and Trevor Penning is denied a starting job, then Landon Young may be the next man up for starting right tackle. Young played in 13 games last season and started in four of them. Young is one of those guys who might be placed virtually anywhere on the line, so don’t be surprised to see him occasionally starting elsewhere in 2024. He wouldn’t be the worst option for right tackle, but his playing time will be extremely dependent on Ramczyk’s health and Fuaga’s position.

Makes sense since they will be holding training camp at the University of California, Irvine this year. https://t.co/TGHJG3ZbrK
— Tina Howell (@TinaHowellNOLA) May 14, 2024

 166.

 167.
The Saints will be hosting their training camp at the University of California- Irvine due to ongoing renovations at their facility, so it makes sense for them to remain on the West Coast for the first two preseason games.

 168.
The Saints will first play against the Cardinals for their preseason Week 1 match then return to California to take on the 49ers along with joint practices.

 186.
Saints schedule predictions: What might it look like?

 193.
 194.
The NFL’s official schedule release is slated for May 15th.

With the NFL’s schedule release coming up this Wednesday, a frequent topic that has come up in recent weeks is what might the 2024 schedule look like for the New Orleans Saints? With the departure of former head coach Sean Payton and long-time quarterback Drew Brees, it seems like the Saints are no longer one of the more enticing teams to watch in the NFL. So, it is likely that we will see another season with minimal prime-time games once again. What the team does have though are some games that Saints fans, players and even coaches will definitely have circled on their calendars at the end of this week.

 195.
To make things interesting for you all, I decided to do my own schedule predictions for the upcoming season. In doing so, I highlighted key matchups as well as possible prime-time games that the team may have. Just a fun exercise that we all can enjoy in our anticipation for Thursday.

 196.
Let’s see what we can cook up.
