140.
 141.
The offense – more specifically the quarterback position – will be put under a microscope this weekend. I’m not sure how many, if any, of the Broncos starters will be playing, but they’re projected to have one of the best defenses in football in 2025, so this should be a great test for the Saints’ offense.

 142.
 143.
Here are three things I want to see from the Saints’ offense in their preseason finale.

 144.
 145.
Either quarterback to run away with the job

 146.
 147.
I’ve been a big proponent of Tyler Shough winning the QB battle unless they are 100% certain Rattler is the better QB (which I’m not sure they are). However, at this point, I just want one of them to separate themselves and have the fanbase feel good about whoever it is that’s starting week one.

 148.
 149.
If they both perform similarly on Saturday, whoever they choose to be the starter will be controversial. If it’s Shough, the Rattler crowd will cry about how it was never a fair fight. If it’s Rattler, people are going to complain about how they drafted a 26-year-old rookie and didn’t start him right away. No matter what, someone’s going to complain, but I hope one of these guys separates themselves and proves they deserve to be the Saints’ starting QB.

 150.
 151.
A solid performance from the OL

 152.
 153.
The offensive line has not been great thus far. There have been some great individual performances, such as Kelvin Banks in pass protection, but we’re yet to see the whole unit sustain a solid drive both in the pass and run game.

 154.
 155.
Eric McCoy is unlikely to play on Saturday. I would imagine the rest of the starting offensive line will get at least a couple of drives with Rattler at QB. I don’t need to see them light it up, I just want to see some consistent pockets and a few open running lanes. Again, this Broncos defense is good, so it doesn’t need to be perfect, just better than it has been. Because without McCoy, the line has looked pretty bad, especially in the middle.

 156.
 157.
Another Mason Tipton show

 158.
 159.
Mason Tipton has been a name on Saints fans’ radar since last preseason. He didn’t get to show much in the regular season, but this preseason, he’s been standing out again. He went for 100 yards against the Jaguars last week, and I hope he can have another solid performance this week.

 160.
 161.
I know the Saints just brought in Devaughn Vele and Tipton will likely be WR5 at best this season, but he’s so much fun to watch, and I really hope they continue to give him chances. If he has another big game like he did last week, it’s going to be hard to keep him off the field much longer.

 162.
 163.
I want to come out of this game knowing who the Saints’ starting QB is going to be, and feel good about where the offensive line is at. If those two things happen, I’ll feel better going into the two-week break before the regular season. But if they leave us with more questions than answers, it’s going to be a long couple weeks.

 191.
This is the final chance for head coach Kellen Moore to evaluate his young quarterbacks in a real game situation before the start of the regular season. With such a significant decision ahead, the Saints must ensure they can evaluate each player fairly. Whichever quarterback started each preseason game over the last two weeks has seen plenty of pressure and has been unable to perform. While it is important to evaluate how each quarterback responds to an active pass rush, the offensive line has allowed too much pressure too quickly.

 192.
 193.
Moore hasn’t confirmed which starters will play, but this may be the first action we see of center Erik McCoy. The Pro Bowl center hasn’t participated in the preseason as he managed his load to be prepared for the regular season. McCoy has been the best offensive lineman for the Saints in recent years, anchoring the interior. With McCoy’s absence in the preseason, right guard Cesar Ruiz has struggled immensely.

 194.
 195.
Unfortunately for the Saints’ offensive line, they’ll be facing the starting Broncos defense, which led the league in sacks in 2024. Denver hasn’t allowed a team to score over 10 points in the preseason and will be facing a pair of young quarterbacks for New Orleans. With the pivotal decision looming, the Saints’ offensive line has to bring its A-game.

 196.
 197.
Saints’ CBs vs. Broncos’ WRs

 198.
 199.
The Saints know a lot about the depth in the Broncos’ wide receiver room. New Orleans traded for second-year breakout wideout Devaughn Vele, who Denver was shopping around after the positive development of younger receivers. Outside of star Courtland Sutton, the Broncos have made it a point to add talent around their young quarterback in the draft, selecting Marvin Mims, Pat Bryant, and Troy Franklin over the last three drafts.

 200.
 201.
The depth at cornerback for the Saints is thin, and they may struggle to keep up with the Broncos’ young playmakers. Kool-Aid McKinstry is projected to have a breakout year, but has yet to prove anything. Behind him are veteran Isaac Yiadom, rookie Quincy Riley, and second-year Rico Payton. While Riley and Payton have plenty of potential, each young defensive back has had their struggles in the preseason.

 202.
 203.
Saturday’s matchup will be another indicator of how prepared New Orleans is for the upcoming season. The Saints’ defense has a ton of questions, not just with personnel, but also with scheme. If they struggle against the Broncos, they will likely continue that trend going into the regular season.

 204.
 205.
Kendre Miller vs. Broncos’ defense

 206.
 207.
Despite his lack of stats, third-year running back Kendre Miller has been one of the biggest standouts during the preseason. Bad offensive line play has allowed defenders to meet Miller in the backfield on plenty of occasions, but the former third-round draft pick has been able to force his way out of what should be negative plays.

 208.
 209.
Miller is the most talented running back on the roster, not named Alvin Kamara, and I feel confident saying that. Despite the immense amount of talent the third-year running back has, he has failed to remain healthy in his short career. While he has a new chance with a new coaching regime, he has to prove he can make an impact on the field.

 210.
 211.
Miller should see a strong number of snaps behind the starting offensive line and will almost certainly see better protection behind Erik McCoy. It’s been rumored that New Orleans is shopping around for running backs. Saturday’s matchup behind a healthy starting offensive line is Miller’s chance to prove his talent and take control of the RB2 job.

 497.
Vele was the Broncos’ seventh-round draft pick in 2024 and had a breakout role in Sean Payton’s offense. The 6-foot-5 wideout would start in 7 games with Denver, bringing in 41 receptions for 475 yards and 3 touchdowns.

 498.
 499.
The reactions to the acquisition have been mixed. While some are praising the Saints for finally addressing the size problem in their receiver room, others are iffy about the draft capital New Orleans had to give up to acquire the second-year wideout. The Saints sent a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Broncos in the trade. With New Orleans projected to be a bottom-five team in 2025, many are not sure the value is there for Vele.

 500.
 501.
And yes, they are correct to be worried about losing draft capital. The Saints used their 2025 fourth-round picks on linebacker Danny Stutsman and cornerback Quincy Riley, who each have had promising camps for New Orleans so far. But on the other hand, the Saints acquired a proven talent that addresses one of their biggest needs immediately.

 502.
 503.
The Saints could’ve held onto their fourth-round pick and taken the gamble on a 2026 rookie, but the truth is, New Orleans has struggled to find impactful talent early on day three of the draft. Not including the 2025 rookies, since 2016, the Saints have only drafted two players in the fourth round who would start games in multiple years for them: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and David Onyemata.

 504.
 505.
With the acquisition of Vele, the Saints gain a young talent who has proven to be able to produce in the league. The former seventh-round pick is still on a rookie contract and won’t be eligible for an extension for another three seasons. New Orleans essentially used a fourth-round pick on a young, proven receiver on a rookie contract.

 506.
 507.
Now it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room: Devaughn Vele was a 26-year-old rookie and will turn 28 late into his sophomore season. Vele’s age likely played a large role in his fall in the draft, and it makes his ceiling appear lower than a typical second-year receiver. Vele has also been dealing with a knee injury over the offseason and has had to manage his load as he recovers.

 508.
 509.
Despite his cons, Broncos head coach Sean Payton had high praise for the 6-foot-5 wide receiver, comparing him to Saints legend Marques Colston. While there’s a lot more developing for Vele to do before he could even begin to touch the impact Colston had on the Saints, the high praise from one of the league’s all-time best offensive coaches isn’t to be taken lightly.

 510.
 511.
It’s also possible for New Orleans to recoup a fourth-round pick. After star cornerback Paulson Adebo signed with the New York Giants in free agency, the Saints were projected to receive a fourth-round compensatory pick in return. Unfortunately, the signing of veteran cornerback Isaac Yiadom could nullify the pick. If Yiadom plays a certain amount of time for New Orleans, they won’t be gifted the 2026 fourth-rounder. The veteran cornerback is slated to be a starter for the Saints, but 2025 fourth-round selection Quincy Riley has made some noise to earn time on the starting defense.

 512.
 513.
Vele instantly becomes the tallest wideout on the team, with the next tallest being three inches shorter. There was a real concern that the Saints wouldn’t address the lack of size and roll with the players they have. Vele uses his hands to fight through coverage and all of his 6-foot-5 frame to high-point the ball. The former Utah wide receiver ran an extended route tree in college and has a bag of tricks not often seen in a player with as little experience. While the team had to give up a significant draft selection in 2026, it’s being reported that they weren’t the only ones interested in the 2025 breakout receiver.

 575.
The New Orleans Saints have never shied away from making moves to put the team in a better position to win, no matter what the outlook for the season is. This was the case last season when the team traded a 7th for John Ridgeway to begin the season, and at the time I am writing this, it has happened again. New Orleans has traded a 2026 4th and a 2027 7th for Broncos WR Devaughn Vele.

 576.
 577.
When the news was first revealed that Vele was being traded to the Saints, it looked like an exceptional move due to what the second-year WR brings to the offense. Vele is 6-foot-5, had a nearly 500-yard season in his rookie year, and he will be the contested catch threat in the Saints’ WR room. One of the main issues with the Saints’ roster has been the lack of size with the pass catchers. Having flexibility at the receiver is extremely important to any offense, especially with a younger group at QB. Although there has not been a starting QB named yet, either Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough would benefit from more size in the receiver room. TE Juwan Johnson can not be the only safety blanket for these young QBs, and now Vele will be that player. Last year, with QB Bo Nix, Vele was one of his favorite targets in contested catch situations. This is a massive piece the Saints were missing. Now although this is a huge positive for the move, there are also some negatives.

 578.
 579.
As I mentioned a bit before, the Saints’ odds of making the playoffs are low, and with so many questions around this team, giving up draft capital for a 27-year-old WR is interesting. Considering what the Saints gave up, a 4th round pick is not an easy asset to relinquish. Although no selection is guaranteed, New Orleans has already benefited from their two 4th-round picks (Danny Stutsman and Quincy Riley) from the 2025 draft. Now, there is one aspect that the Saints may be relying on to gain back some draft capital, and that is compensatory picks. Due to CB Paulson Adebo leaving in free agency for the Giants, the Saints are projected to get a 4th round pick. One major caveat to note is that this pick could be kept away from New Orleans. If the newly signed CB Isaac Yiadom plays significant amount of snaps this season, the Saints will not get that projected 4th round compensatory selection. This means New Orleans would be without a 4th rounder in 2026. Again, this may not mean much if Vele performs well, but it is something to consider moving forward.

 580.
 581.
The Saints made their move to improve the WR depth and added a great contested catch threat, but was it worth giving up a 4th round pick?
