Saturday night’s game was one of those that the Carolina Hurricanes needed to win.

There was a lot of good, but it’s still evident the Canes have more work to do, especially in the defensive end.

Carolina started on time and jumped out to an early double-digit shot lead.

Despite the good start, the Hurricanes gave up a late first period goal. At the start of a power play, Philadelphia moved the puck effectively, got a weird bounce off the glass, and Carolina lost a man in the slot. Unfortunately, the Canes had a few defensive lapses throughout the game, allowing the Flyers to stay in it.

Carolina continued their second period dominance on home ice. Logan Stankoven got the Canes on the board by cleaning up a terrific individual effort by Jackson Blake. The Canes got in transition, Blake had the puck on a string, and Stankoven was there to bang home the rebound.

View Link

Eric Robinson and Taylor Hall continued their hot start to the season with a beautiful transition goal to bring the Hurricanes even. After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that Robinson was “sensational,” and that he has to find more ice time for that he and Hall.

View Link

With just a minute and a half left in the second, the Jordan Staal line created a great opportunity with excellent board play. Jordan Martinook created space behind the net and found Staal for the one-timer. From the opening puck drop, this line was controlling the play along the boards, imposing a consistent physical game.

View Link

In his post-game comments, Staal joked that he had been waiting for Martinook to find him on the backside for that type of one-time goal.

It is interesting to note that the Canes outscored the Flyers 3-1 in the second period, but the teams had 12 shots each.

The Hurricanes seemed to settle down in the third with a 3-2 lead. The team was better with their defensive assignments and was controlling the play.

Unfortunately, the first mistake of the third was costly as Travis Sanheim drifted to the high slot as the Canes collapsed below the dots and buried it to tie the game. A blown assignment by Seth Jarvis, like on Thursday night, led to the game-tying goal.

There was extra hockey in Raleigh, and Philadelphia got the jump during the extra frame.

With just over a minute left, Bobby Brink gathered up a Sanheim rebound to end the game. However, Frederick Andersen was adamant that there was contact. After a review from the situation room in Toronto, goalie interference was called, and the goal was nullified.

Jarvis, Sebastian Aho, and Shayne Gostisbehere were next up for the Canes and were determined to end. The trio moved the puck flawlessly, and Ghost’s dish to Aho from below the dots gave him the space to feed a pass for a Jarvis one-time winner.

View Link

Just like on Thursday, Jarvis wins it after a defensive lapse earlier in the game.

The Hurricanes’ transition game was a strong point in the second period. However, throughout the course of the game, the Flyers had 17 scoring chances off the rush, compared to just six by the Canes.

Unfortunately, the power play went 0-4. Brind’Amour made a statement at the start of the fourth opportunity by starting the second unit.

These two areas, combined with rotations and spacing on defensive assignments, will certainly be points of emphasis during practice.

Brind’Amour did not have an update on Jaccob Slavin, who left during the third period with an injury. The team is optimistic that Slavin will be fine for the annual State Fair road trip that kicks off on Tuesday.

It’s nice that the folks at ESPN felt that the season opener for the Hurricanes warranted being carried on a national platform, and the game sure delivered. While several can complain about the fact that it was on ESPN’s streaming service, at least it meant they were able to show the entirety of the Storm Surge after the win plus the interview with Seth Jarvis was a treasure.

That said we as fans are used to our home team announcers calling the games. Now you could have synched the call from the Hurricanes Radio Network to hear the familiar pair, but tonight is the night that really feels like the opening to the season. Tonight we get the 6:30 p.m. pregame start time with Hanna Yates and Shane Willis sitting in the concourse of Lenovo Center, Mike Maniscalco up in the booth, and Tripp Tracy on the bench and interviewing Rod Brind’Amour. Then when the puck drops Mike and Tripp will guide us through the game as the Hurricanes take on the Flyers.

As for today, both teams are coming off playing Thursday. The Flyers lost close one to Florida 2-1, while the Canes had their thrilling 6-3 win over the Devils.

Unlike the Canes who had an optional skate on Friday, Philadelphia flew in to Raleigh and hit the ice full-speed for practice. This is how it looked when they practiced:

It’s the talk of Flyers writers that the skating Grittys have already shaken up the lines despite the close loss. Philly isn’t expected to contend in the Metro this year, but early in the season when teams aren’t familiar with each other surprises can happen. The Hurricanes will be facing a tough task before their State Fair trip out west begins next week.

First off, it’s so good that after so many months off and somewhat meaningless preseason hockey to actually have real games to look back on and look ahead to. It also helps when the one you’re looking back on was an entertaining win.

The Canes took the ice for the first time as a whole unit on Thursday Night, and showed off their newest acquisitions in ways that should have fans excited for the rest of the season. The Canes and the Devils played an exciting up and down game that a lot closer than the final 6-3 score.

That kept going after the game when he had this back and forth with Seth Jarvis during the media scrum in the locker room:

Things you hear in the locker room-Jarvis after the scum answering with a “You don’t expect a goal to go in off a bounce.” Miller, done with his scrum and leaving looks back at Jarvy and goes “I HEARD THAT!” Jarvy looks back and laughs “YOU didn’t expect it to go in!”
— Al Hood (@albhood.bsky.social) 2025-10-10T02:29:56.140Z

The vibes are usually going to be good after a win, but the way the Canes won should portend some good things as the Devils were the pick for many to be the Canes’ main competition in the Metro.

Saturday’s opponent is the Philadelphia Flyers, committing to a rebuild now with the ouster of John Tortorella. They put up a good fight against Florida in their season opener, losing 2-1. Brad Marschand scored what would be the game winner early in the third, and the Panthers held on despite outshooting the Flyers by double-digits. While Tortorella may be gone, the style still remains so the fans who enjoyed the up-and-down action of Opening Night might be in for a bit of a change tomorrow.

Dan Vlader was the goalie peppered with all those shots by the Panthers, and we’ll see if Philly coach Rick Tocchet sticks with Vlader or goes with a roation and puts in Sam Ersson.

The Canes have an optional skate on Friday, not surprising considering the turn around and the long road trip ahead so don’t expect much if any changes to the lines and pairings we saw Thursday. That also goes for between the pipes as we still await word on Pytor Kochetkov’s injury and coach Rod Brind’Amour is unlikely to go with the new acqusition of Brandon Bussi.

In a weird way it’ll feel like the season is really starting. The good news for fans is that the next game not on FanDuel won’t be until the end of the month.

If you’re going to the game, note a couple things. The renovations in the 300 level aren’t complete yet, and you’re going to see a tarp covering the View Bar area. The team hasn’t said when it’ll be ready, but if you’re sitting upstairs be ready for the change up. Also Saturday is Margaritaville Night at Lenovo Center, complete with a t-shirt if you buy your tickets through that link—though you better hurry as most of the shirts are already gone. Expect to see the ode to Jimmy Buffet throughout the night.

After Saturday the State Fair moves in and the Canes fly out. They’ll start their first west coast swing by hitting up the California teams, working their way back east with Vegas, Colorado, then the first of the two highly anticipated meetings against the Stars. The next time they play in Raleigh will be Oct. 28th.

The Carolina Hurricanes started off their season with an impressive, 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.

Seth Jarvis scored twice, including the game-winner.

Newly acquired defenseman, K’Andre Miller also chipped in with two goals in his debut.

The home team outshot the visitors 33-22. They also missed the net 21 times, (many of those shots hit the post) and had 19 shots blocked for a total of 73 shot attempts.

Jersey had a total of 45 shot attempts, (22-13-10).

Carolina’s 4rth line got things started when Taylor Hall tipped in a Shayne Gostisbehere shot just four minutes into the game.

Gostisbehere also had a good game as he finished with two assists and was a +3.

In the second period, Dougie Hamilton tied things up for New Jersey on a backhander, but Miller scored the first of his goals when he bounced a puck in past Jacob Markstrom to give the Canes back the lead.

The Devils tied it up again before the end of the period, but Miller scored a powerplay goal from the point to give the Canes the lead once again.

Barely a minute later, Jersey tied the score once again but then Jarvis would take charge.

He scored the eventual game-winner off a nice pass from Sebastian Aho, then scored an empty-netter to put the game away.

Jarvis had hit the post a couple of times on earlier chances.

The 4rth line scored again with just 13 seconds left when Eric Robinson knocked one in.

Fred Andersen made 19 saves on the 22 shots he faced.

After the game, Brind’Amour praised Miller, calling his game “exceptional”.

Alexander Nikishin also was praised by the coach and played well as he had a couple of blocked shots and a takeaway to go with his assist. He finished with a +3.

The Hurricanes will have an optional practice on Friday before their next home game against the Flyers on Saturday night.

The forward group should be ready to go as Jesperi Kotkaniemi looked no worse for wear recently after missing a couple of days because of the results of a high stick.

It’s a robust group of returners and players who are looking to improve upon last season’s playoff run, especially with many believing that this is a team that could crack into the Stanley Cup playoffs.

You can look for Frederik Andersen to start in net. As for the rest of the lines, it’s a safe bet to expect the configurations to be mixed, but to look close to the following:

Ehlers – Aho – Jarvis

Svechnikov – Stankoven – Blake

Martinook – Staal – Carrier

Hall – Kotkaniemi/Jankowski – Robinson

Slavin – Walker

Chatfield – Reilly

Nikishin – Gostisbehere

Alexander Nikishin played in all situations during the preseason but there are indications he will start off this season off the powerplay. It will be interesting to see how long Miller will sit out.

The Carolina Hurricanes kick off the 2025-26 season starting on Oct. 9 with a home game against the New Jersey Devils. The Canes, who have made it to the NHL playoffs for eight consecutive years, are expected to do very well again this season.

As a matter of fact, they are among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, and are the consensus pick to win the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference. Last season, the Hurricanes finished with 99 points while losing the last three games of the season as they rested some regulars.

According to FanDuel, the Canes are just behind Edmonton and Dallas as Stanley Cup favorites, projected at 106.5 points this coming season.

Is there room for improvement from last year?

One thing for sure the team will be looking to improve is their power play. Last season they finished 25th in the NHL with an 18.7% success rate. The good news is that they had the top penalty kill in the league. They killed off 83.6% of those situations.

The Canes came in second in the league with an average of 31.7 shots per game. They were ninth in the league in scoring at 3.24 goals per game. The team could use a higher shooting percentage. Team defense was also very good at full strength as they allowed 24.9 shots per game, also best in the league. They allowed 230 goals which placed them at 10th best in the league.

Here’s a look at where they stand before their season opener against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET, FanDuel Sports Network).

Additions and subtractions

Gone are Brent Burns, Dmitri Orlov, Jack Roslovic, and Scott Morrow.

Burns was popular in the locker room and an important mainstay on the penalty kill, but he had lost a step and went without a goal while at the point on the power play. He only had three power play assists all season.

Orlov had good games and bad games but never seemed to entirely mesh well with head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s system. Roslovic contributed with 22 goals but scored most of them earlier in the season. He also finished with a team worst -10.

Morrow was a promising prospect but was thrown into the playoffs after Jalen Chatfield was injured and seemed to be in over his head. The Canes went after K’Andre Miller to replace Burns and signed the defenseman to a huge eight year deal worth $60 million. They traded away Morrow and two high draft picks to get him.

The team will also be hoping that highly regarded KHL superstar, Alexander Nikishin will fill in for Orlov.

They signed the top free agent on the market at the time, Nikolaj Ehlers, who should help with the team’s scoring. He signed with Carolina for six years and $51 million.

Possible lines and combinations

Brind’Amour has some decisions to make regarding his line up.

During the preseason, he has been experimenting with Logan Stankoven at center and the youngster has done well. If the coach stays with Stankoven at second line center, the lines might look like this:

Jarvis – Aho – Ehlers

Svechnikov – Stankoven – Blake

Martinook – Staal – Carrier

Robinson – Kotkaniemi – Hall

If the coach gives “KK” another try as second line center, perhaps the lines would look like this:

Jarvis – Aho – Ehlers

Svechnikov – Kotkaniemi – Blake

Martinook – Staal – Stankoven

Hall – Jankowski – Carrier/Robinson

Either way, the Hurricanes have a potent group of forwards who will be dangerous most nights.

The coach has a similar problem on the blue line. In a perfect world, he might want to have his top blueliners playing together, but both have been injured during the preseason and have yet to play any preseason games.

Slavin – Miller

The others?

Chatfield – Nikishin

Gostisbehere – Walker

Chatfield has good speed and can help out Nikishin, who is still learning the system. Gostisbehere and Walker have successful history together and should perform well. The Canes picked up Mike Reilly to be their seventh defenseman and with his experience, he should fit in well. He will be the answer to fill in for any injury as that was an issue for Carolina last postseason.

One problem? The Canes have five left-handed defensemen and two right-handed which means someone needs to play their offside.

Jacob Slavin is like Superman, expect him to figure this out as well. Additionally, the Canes have been very impressed with Charles Alexis Legault and after a solid preseason, he could slide his way into the mix.

In net, the Hurricanes will be relying on the tandem of Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov. When he is on his game, Andersen can be solid, but he is injury prone and it is hard to count on him through the entire season. Kochetkov is talented but has been a bit inconsistent. Sometimes he can try to do too much.

But together, they should be a suitable duo.

The team signed Cayden Primeau to help out in case a third goalie is needed. Primeau has looked good in preseason. The Hurricanes have lots of room with their salary cap so they could very well look to improve before the trade deadline.

Will Carolina live up to all the predictions and accolades. The time to find out begins on Thursday.

The Carolina Hurricanes dropped their final preseason game this fall to the Nashville Predators, 3-2 in overtime late Saturday afternoon.

The Canes jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first as Jordan Martinook took a pass from Jordan Staal to open the scoring.

The home team would tie things up shortly afterward when Jonathan Marchessault buried a shot during a powerplay opportunity.

Tyson Jost scored to open the second period. The Canes recently tried to reassign Jost to Chicago but he was claimed off the waiver wire and of course scored against his former team.

Seth Jarvis would tie the game again in the third and that’s the way it stayed until the end of regulation.

Andrei Svechnikov got rocked hard in the extra period off a high hit by Joakim Kemell. Sebatian Aho took exception and got called for unsportsmanlike conduct to give the Preds the man advantage again.

Of course, Kemell would rip in the game-winner during the ensuing 4 on 3 advantage.

The good news is that this game didn’t count, although you might not want to tell that to Svechnikov. That hit sure “counted.“

The bad news is that Carolina’s special teams have not been special this preseason and they will need a huge improvement to start the regular season.

Notes:

Alexander Nikishin led the team with 5 hits and had 23:05 of ice time, third best on the team. He also had a team high 4 blocked shots.

Pyotr Kochetkov had a solid game for his first action this preseason. He finished making 26 saves on 29 shots and two of the three goals he allowed were during the penalty kill.

The Canes will take Sunday off and will get back to work at practice on Monday as they prepare for their home opener against the Devils on Thursday night.
