Minnesota Timberwolves at Guangzhou Loong-Lions
Date: October 13th, 2025
Time: 7:00 PM CDT
Location: Target Center
Television Coverage: NBA League Pass
Radio Coverage: KFAN FM, Wolves App, iHeart Radio

After back-to-back overtime losses, the 1-2 Timberwolves get a chance to “right the ship” Monday night when the Guangzhou Loong-Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association make their third and final stop on their U.S. tour. So far for thee Lions, it’s trip that’s gone about as well as a “Shark Tank” pitch for Fyre Festival 2.0.

The Lions have been torched on this trip. The Spurs ran them out of the gym. The Clippers toyed with them. And now, they face a Timberwolves squad that could use a confidence boost and a reminder that basketball can still be fun. This isn’t just a game. It’s a palate cleanser. A live-action scrimmage dressed up as an international exhibition.

The Stakes

Let’s not kid ourselves. The Wolves should win this game by double digits before the first quarter ends. The Loong-Lions have played five games against NBA competition and lost all five — none by fewer than 29 points. Their defensive schemes make the All-Star Game look like 2004 Pistons basketball.

So, yeah, the Wolves will probably score 130. The real question is who gets the highlight reel treatment. Maybe Terrence Shannon Jr. drops 50. Maybe Naz Reid throws down a dunk so vicious that the Target Center crowd forgets it’s October.

But this isn’t about the scoreboard. This is about reps, rhythm, and roster clarity.

The Dillingham Question

The biggest storyline of the night isn’t Anthony Edwards or Julius Randle. It’s Rob Dillingham.

You don’t trade up for the No. 8 pick, position him as Mike Conley Jr.’s heir apparent, and then let him fade into preseason anonymity. After an up-and-down rookie year and a summer league that could charitably be described as “educational,” the fanbase is antsy. Dillingham has to show something — poise, pace, a glimmer of control.

If he can’t shine against a CBA team, that’s a red flag the size of the Target Center scoreboard.

And let’s be honest, the Wolves’ backup point guard situation is about as stable as a Jenga tower in an earthquake. Bones Hyland has been fun in spurts, but those spurts have mostly come against guys who’ll be suiting up for the G League by Thanksgiving. The Wolves need a second guard who can organize, defend, and not immediately turn into a pumpkin when Conley sits.

That’s not a small ask. But hey, that’s what games like this are for.

TSJ Time?

This also has “Terrence Shannon Jr. breakout” written all over it. He’s the kind of high-motor wing who thrives in these track-meet exhibitions. The Lions couldn’t stop a pick-and-roll with duct tape, so if Finch decides to limit minutes for the stars, Shannon could be the one putting up All-Star numbers.

There’s always that one preseason game where a role player explodes and everyone pretends we’ve just witnessed a future starter being born. Maybe this is that night.

Bigger Picture

From the NBA’s perspective, this is part goodwill tour, part brand expansion. Anthony Edwards already has a budding fanbase in China, and this game just amplifies it. The league loves this stuff. “Basketball without borders,” “global game,” “expanding markets,” you name it.

And honestly? It’s fine. It’s preseason. The Wolves could use a low-stakes night to get their mojo back and remind everyone that they’re more than just a “Western Conference Finals hangover” team.

Just don’t lose. Seriously. Do not lose this game. You can shrug off back-to-back overtime losses to Eastern Conference Finalists, but if the Timberwolves become the first NBA team to lose to the Loong-Lions? Every bar in Minneapolis is going to sound like a funeral for optimism.

Final Word

Expect a few fireworks, a lot of running, and plenty of highlight fodder for the Wolves’ social team. This game won’t tell us much about the upcoming season, but it might just calm some nerves, and maybe give us a glimpse at whether Dillingham is ready to take that next step.

This one’s not about standings. It’s about vibes, auditions, and maybe a few poster dunks. Think of it as basketball comfort food — no pressure, just entertainment. Enjoy!

It’s Monday night, Minnesota versus the Lions. And for one brief moment, you might do a double take. “Wait, are we talking football?” Nope. Not even close. This isn’t the NFC North. This is the NBA preseason, where logic takes a backseat, and we’re about to watch the Minnesota Timberwolves host the Guangzhou Loong-Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association.

And honestly? I kind of love it.

Because after playing the same 29 NBA teams year after year, preseason exhibitions like this feel like basketball’s version of a vacation fling: brief, fun, and ultimately meaningless.

The Setup

The Loong-Lions are wrapping up their three-game U.S. tour, and so far, it’s been a tough trip. San Antonio and the Clippers both treated them like the Washington Generals, putting on highlight reels that had the Lions looking like they were running in slow motion.

Now the Wolves have the chance to make it 0-for-3. And to be honest, they should. The Lions have never come away victorious when playing NBA-level.

Still, that doesn’t mean this game doesn’t matter. For Chris Finch and the Wolves, this is more like a live scrimmage with uniforms and TV cameras. You use a game like this to:

Tinker with small-ball lineups.

See if your rookies can handle real game pace.

And most importantly, avoid being that team. You know, the one that gives an international squad their “Miracle on Hardwood” moment.

No one in Minnesota wants to read “Loong-Lions Shock Wolves in Minneapolis” on ESPN’s bottom ticker.

How to Watch

FanDuel Sports Network North, the Wolves’ broadcast home for most games this season is showing the Wild game on Monday night. Bummer.

If you’re not already hooked up with FanDuel Sports Network, here’s your out: they’re offering a 30-day free trial right now. Seriously. You can catch a full month of Wolves games and bathe in the brilliance of when Jim Pete drops a story about guarding Karl Malone in 1993.

For those of you looking to catch the game, it appears the game will be available through NBA League Pass. Otherwise, KFAN FM, the Wolves App, and iHeart Radio are going to be your go-to options.

Final Thought

Let’s be honest. Preseason basketball is usually a slog. But there’s something wonderfully weird about nights like this. The Wolves playing a team from halfway across the world. A Monday crowd at Target Center getting to see something unique. And a chance, for 48 minutes, to remember that basketball really is the world’s game, even if one side’s world-class and the other’s… well, just world-traveled.

If the Wolves handle their business, it’s a good tune-up. If they somehow lose, we’ll be talking about it for years. Either way, that’s good preseason content.

So grab your popcorn, tune into the game, and let’s hope the Loong-Lions don’t turn this into their Rocky IV moment.

Welcome to your one-stop national-TV guide for the Timberwolves’ 2025–26 season. If you’ve ever lost track of where to watch the Wolves (is it ESPN? Peacock? Prime?), you’re not alone. We’re officially in a new era of NBA broadcasting.

For the 2025–26 season, the NBA rolled out a brand-new 11-year media rights deal where Disney (ABC/ESPN), NBC/Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video became the league’s primary broadcast partners.

That means:

National games will now rotate across ESPN/ABC, NBC (plus Peacock streaming), and Amazon.

TNT will no longer carry NBA games. Its final broadcast was Game 6 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals on May 31, 2025.

The world-wide leaders in Wolves hate, Chuck and Shaq, are now at the world-wide leader. ESPN and ABC took over the rights to Inside the NBA, which TNT produced for decades, under a sub-license agreement.

So yeah, things shifted dramatically. That’s part of why we needed a fresh, full-season guide like this. You’ll see more variety in national windows, more streaming-first games, and a real domino effect on where the Wolves show up on your screen.

With more national TV slots for the NBA than ever, the Timberwolves will appear in a franchise-record 28 nationally televised games during the 2025–26 season, airing across ESPN, Amazon Prime, NBC, ABC, and Peacock.

FanDuel Sports Network North remains as the Wolves’ regional home. There are several ways to get access to FDSN-N:

Streaming Subscription: Local fans can purchase a streaming subscription via the FanDuel Sports Network app or by visiting FanDuelSportsNetwork.com. Fans can purchase a season pass, monthly, or annual streaming package. Individual games are also available for purchase once live coverage begins. The FanDuel Sports Network app is available for download on many devices and on several living-room/connected-device platforms.

Prime Video: Local Prime Video customers can sign up to stream FanDuel Sports Network as an add-on subscription. Visit Amazon.com/channels and search for FanDuel Sports Network to subscribe.

Cable/Satellite/Streaming Provider: FanDuel Sports Network is widely available on cable, satellite, and streaming providers, including DIRECTV, fubo, Mediacom, MidCo, Spectrum, Xfinity, etc. etc. Visit GetMyHomeTeams.com for options in your zip code. If you receive FanDuel Sports Network through your provider, you can stream games on the FanDuel Sports Network app or at FanDuelSportsNetwork.com at no extra cost by signing in with your provider credentials.

Free Trial Tip: FanDuel Sports Network North is offering a 30-day free trial for new streamers. It’s the easiest way to cover the many regional nights on the calendar if you’re not already set up.

On Thursday, the NBA released its annual survey of general managers, with many Minnesota Timberwolves players and coaches featured prominently.

In the survey, the Timberwolves were picked to finish fourth in the Western Conference behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, and Houston Rockets. The difference in voting between the Wolves and those top three teams was somewhat sizable, signalling that GMs believe the Wolves are closer to teams like the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers than the top teams in the west.

The Wolves did not receive any votes for who could win the 2026 NBA Finals, with the Thunder, Nuggets, Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks as the only five teams to receive a vote in that category.

Anthony Edwards was named as the top shooting guard in the NBA, finishing with 70 percent of the votes. Donovan Mitchell, who came in second place, was the only other true shooting guard in the top five of voting, as Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Stephen Curry are all more known as point guards.

Edwards has cemented his status as the league’s best shooting guard in the past year. While he was voted the best shooting guard last year, he received less than half the votes he received this season, at 33 percent. Ant was also named the second most athletic player in the NBA behind Houston’s Amen Thompson.

Joan Beringer was selected as one of the biggest steals of the NBA draft, finishing in a tie for fourth. Many Timberwolves staffers have spoken highly of Beringer, and that hype has apparently spread to the rest of the NBA.

Rudy Gobert got his annual nod as one of the best defensive players in the NBA, finishing in a tie for second with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and behind preseason DPOY front-runner Victor Wembanyama. The Wolves as a team were voted tied for the second-best defensive team in the NBA behind the Thunder.

Chris Finch received votes in many categories as head coach of the Timberwolves, including best in-game adjustments, best well-run offense, and best defensive schemes.

Micah Nori was named the best assistant coach in the NBA, receiving 25 percent of the vote. Wolves fans are well-acquainted with Nori, but it’s a nice sign for him to be recognized on the national scale as well.

A few smaller acknowledgments the Wolves received included being tied for the fourth most fun to watch, Mike Conley being voted as one of the players that would make the best coach, and Edwards and Conley receiving votes for being the best leaders on their teams.

It wasn’t that long ago that you could read the entire GM survey and only see the Wolves mentioned once or twice. Now, with the organization thriving, the Wolves have become one of the more widely recognized franchises in the NBA.

Basketball is a strange sport. It’s a game of emotion and yet one defined by statistical clarity. It is loud and social, and yet there is no one more lonely than a man at the free-throw line. It hits so hard because, as we watch these players, we feel something deeply emotional in a game that so many others see as an excuse to hide from family during the holidays. There is a collective here among us, one that feels something about the meaningless.

Enter the importance of a game with no consequence. Enter tonight’s matchup. Enter tonight’s matchup.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks will be linked until the trade of Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and the pick that became Joan Beringer has left the desiccated husks of our memories. As such, it felt personal when, in the first quarter, Julius Randle drove directly at the power forward that took his place in the Sporcle quizzes about the Knicks’ starting lineup. In what seemed to be a sign of the night to come, Randle drew the foul and pushed his personal total up to eight points.

After building a decently sized nine-point lead halfway through the second quarter, it was pretty clear that the only players who could get anything going were Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle, with an unexpected third member in Rob Dillingham.

Rob’s been the topic of many conversations, be it on Twitter or in pizza shops. The undersized guard has struggled to finish under the rim and was emphatically stuffed at the rim by Mitchell Robinson. Still, in what seemed to be the teaser for how the regular season rotation would go, Rob played six minutes and scored seven, leading to a 44-38 score at half.

In many ways, this season will come down to the swing factors of those three players. Can Anthony Edwards diversify his play style and find more ways to make a roster devoid of real playmaking talent? Can Julius Randle be the version of himself he was in the first two rounds of the playoffs, a hub of offense and a committed rebounder and defender? Can Rob Dillingham be more than a highlight tape and instead cement himself as the future of this team’s point guard position?

None of those questions will be answered tonight, nor will there be any real insight into how much shot creation Jaden McDaniels will be tasked with, nor what this team wants TJ Shannon to turn into.

Instead, tonight certainly answered the question of “how many mistakes can the Wolves get away with?” with a resounding answer of a handful less than they committed, and about as many as the Knicks managed to make tonight and still get the win

But it was preseason, and it gave us a rotation and some things to talk about. With that being said, and with a quick mention by Dane Moore, let’s get to it.

Feels like this will be how the Wolves' rotation will work to start the year…

– Starting 5
Gobert
Randle
McDaniels
Edwards
Conley
– The 6th and 7th starters
Reid
DiVincenzo
– The end of the nightly rotation
Shannon
Dillingham
– Out of the rotation
Beringer
Clark
— Dane Moore (@DaneMooreNBA) October 10, 2025

Game Summary

The Wolves’ lead grew bit by bit, row by row. While it never quite left the single-digit territory, it stayed afloat. While Julius Randle scored seven of the team’s first nine, Minnesota slowly found a rhythm. It was, however, a very messy rhythm, out of time and tempo, with misplaced notes that only the mother of a jazz drummer could love. Turnovers and ineffective transition defense kept a Knicks team shooting just over 10% from three in a game that could’ve rapidly become a blowout.

The second quarter was much of the same. From bad decisions to bad process, the Knicks stayed in this game by virtue of being the team making slightly fewer threes and many fewer mistakes. A halftime lead that could’ve been 20 was chiseled down to just six.

That led us to what is likely the worst sign of the night. It is completely clear to me that, had this been a regular-season game, the Wolves starters would’ve blown this game. Indeed, the end-of-the-bench guys did anyway, but they at least kept the game close, while the starters, players that should ostensibly be ready to perform at a high level when called upon, even in the lowest stakes, built a lead only to throw it away with laziness and somnambulistic close-outs.

The game did not go into overtime. It fell into it the same way someone with their eyes covered falls into quicksand. Instead of the joy of more basketball, we got the ontological evil that was a continuation of this game.

The Wolves fell apart in that every five minutes, showing that the deep reserves were not nearly as infallible as I thought they were. A pair of threes and a layup was answered weakly with a Rocco Zikarsky dunk. A Tyler Kolek mid-range jumper put this game out of its misery.

Basketball is fun, and tonight’s game was fun as we ease back into the NBA season, but if this is a sign of a season to come (it is probably not), it will be an up-and-down season just like last year’s, and I don’t know if I can handle that.

Post Game Presser

Head Coach Chris Finch was the first and only member of the Wolves I was able to speak to post-game. I was able to ask him only two questions before it became clear that no one else was going to show up to his availability.

With only two questions to ask, the focus was on the now of tonight and the later of the next few months. When asked about turnovers in the second half derailing the game, Finch said, “Yeah, we gave it to them. Three turnovers in four possessions to start the half, all of them silly, and led to transition opportunities. It’s kinda inexcusable for a team like us.”

With the rest of the back hallway of Madison Square Garden quiet and empty in its de facto conference room, I offered one more question. As mentioned above, Rob Dillingham is the make-or-break player of this season. Considering the player he was in Kentucky, so many different fans have grown to worry about just who the Wolves want Rob to be, and if he can, in fact, be that version of himself.

There seemed to be a lot of focus on getting the second-year guard as much time as possible on the court with as many different lineup opportunities. When asked about how the push for Rob to get further into the paint would enable him to grow into a more capable three-level scorer, Finch fired back, “We’re not trying to make him a three-level scorer at all. We’re trying to make him a playmaker, get into the paint, and make the right play. The scoring will come. He scored it easy in his first shift out there because he just played within the flow of the game. He got a three off the pass in the pick and roll, he got an opportunity to see the basket early on along the baseline, and he needs to create pace, get to the heart of the defense, and create shots for his teammates. From the back of that, everything else will come. We have enough scoring, and his scoring will fit in around our guys, but that’s not a focus right now.”

Up Next

The Timberwolves return home for their second and final preseason game at Target Center against the Guangzhou Loong-Lions, a team from the Chinese Basketball Association. The game tips off on Monday, Oct 13 at 7:00 PM CT. Fans can watch the game on FanDuel Sports Network.

Minnesota Timberwolves at New York Knicks
Date: October 9th, 2025
Time: 6:30 PM CDT
Location: Madison Square Garden
Television Coverage: NBA TV
Radio Coverage: KFAN FM, Wolves App, iHeart Radio

Let’s start with the obvious: anytime Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves share a court, the basketball gods pour a little extra hot sauce on the popcorn. Doesn’t matter if it’s preseason. There’s juice in this matchup.

Hard to believe, but it’s been just over a year since Towns packed his Louis Vuitton duffels and headed east, traded to New York in the deal that brought Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and the pick that became rookie Joan Beringer to Minnesota. It felt seismic at the time—half breakup, half liberation. Now? It’s starting to look like one of those rare NBA trades where both sides actually got what they wanted. Towns found the spotlight back home; the Wolves found an edge.

This will be the fourth meeting since the split: the Knicks took the preseason and the first regular-season contest in 2024, and the Wolves stole one in Madison Square Garden when Ant went full Broadway villain, and now we’re here. No banners at stake, no standings implications, but don’t kid yourself: both sides care.

A Tale of Two Vibes

The Wolves roll into New York after an uneven showing in their preseason home opener against Indiana. They looked like a team half awake at a Saturday brunch. There were some flashes of brilliance, and some moments where the hollandaise curdled.

Anthony Edwards dropped a casual 20 and looked ready to start the season tomorrow. Jaylen Clark’s defense was tighter than TSA security until he left with neck spasms. And Johnny Juzang? The guy went NBA Jam “He’s on fire!” mode in the fourth quarter, bombing threes like he was trying to unlock a secret character. The problem: everything in between felt like a pick-up run at Lifetime Fitness. The Pacers hustled, cut, rotated, and basically did everything your high-school coach preached while the Wolves looked… chill. Too chill.

It’s preseason, sure. No one’s asking Finch to break out the playoff rotation or full-court press. But the “flip the switch” version of the Wolves, the one that occasionally took quarters off last year, still shows up uninvited. And that’s the part that should make Wolves fans twitch a little. You don’t want to see that ghost in October.

The Cat-and-Mouse Game

Now comes the reunion in the Big Apple. Towns in orange and blue, with Madison Square Garden buzzing.

Minnesota’s counterpunch? The frontcourt trio of Rudy Gobert, Randle, and Naz Reid. The trio will try to rough him up early, deny rhythm, and keep him off the line. Donte DiVincenzo, meanwhile, gets his own reunion subplot. He’s the type who’d love to drop four threes on his former team just to stir the pot.

But the real subplot isn’t traded players facing their former teams, it’s the point guards.

Backup Point Guard Roulette

Mike Conley Jr. is the adult in the room, the professor holding a coffee (or cup of chili) in one hand and a clipboard in the other. The issue is what happens when he sits. Bones Hyland has quietly played himself into the “trustworthy spark plug” conversation during the first two preseason outings. Rob Dillingham, on the other hand, has looked like a sophomore figuring out that NBA defenses aren’t summer-league scrimmages.

Still, Dillingham did ball out in this building last January in his unofficial coming-out party. If he can rediscover that Garden energy tomorrow night, it might nudge Finch to keep him in the rotation mix. If not, the “Bones and DDV” plan becomes more real by the day.

The Johnny Juzang Heat-Check Watch

Let’s talk about Johnny Juzang. Every team has that one end-of-bench guy who makes you yell “Why doesn’t he play more?!” after every made three. Juzang’s that guy right now. His flamethrower fourth quarter versus Indiana was electric.

If Juzang can keep that rhythm going, he might lock up the final roster spot. For a Wolves team that spent parts of last season going full Siberia offensively for six-minute stretches, having a microwave scorer waiting in the wings could be the difference between “gritty win” and “painful flashbacks.”

Big-Picture Wolves Thoughts

Here’s the thing: Minnesota doesn’t need to prove they’re talented. They already have two All-Stars, a Defensive Player of the Year, and a bench that could probably beat half the East on a Tuesday night. What they need is consistency. Cohesion. That relentless, almost annoying OKC energy that got the Thunder to the Finals last year.

If the Wolves learned anything from that run, it’s that talent gets you to May, but habits get you to June. This preseason isn’t about wins; it’s about wiring. And for a team with legitimate championship potential, that starts with effort in games that “don’t matter.”

The MSG Moment

So here we are again: the Wolves, the Knicks. The Karl-Anthony Towns reunion tour.

Maybe it’s meaningless. Maybe it’s preseason. But if you’ve watched this team long enough, you know these little games do carry weight, especially when it’s your old franchise player on the other side, smirking after a jumper.

Here’s hoping Minnesota walks into Madison Square Garden with a chip on their shoulder and a little edge in their step. Because if they’re serious about taking that next leap, the switch can’t just be flipped, it’s got to stay on.

And if they walk out with a win? Consider it an anniversary gift. It’s been one year since the breakup, and the Wolves are doing just fine.

It’s been one year and one week since Karl-Anthony Towns traded in his snow boots for Broadway lights. One year since the Timberwolves and Knicks shocked the league with the blockbuster that sent KAT to New York in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and the draft pick that became rookie Joan Beringer.
A Year Later: Everyone’s Eating

The Wolves didn’t fall off. Despite a season-long flirtation with the play-in round, they clawed back to a second consecutive Western Conference Finals. Anthony Edwards leveled up again, Gobert stayed healthy, and Julius Randle finally clicked and embraced his role as Minnesota’s #2.

Meanwhile, the Knicks also reached the Conference Finals before running into the buzzsaw known as Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers.

Here’s the fun “what if” that nobody talks about: if both teams had just won one more series, we would’ve gotten Timberwolves vs. Knicks in the 2025 NBA Finals. Imagine that…

The Bottom Line

It’s Wolves-Knicks, one year later. A reunion. A “what if.” A little preseason nostalgia sprinkled with future Finals intrigue. It doesn’t count in the standings, but it counts in all the ways that actually matter: pride, validation, and petty satisfaction.

So tune in. The basketball gods were favorable to us and put this must-watch matchup on NBA TV. For those of you who prefer your mind’s eye instead of a screen, you can also listen to the game on KFAN FM, the Wolves app, or iHeart Radio. Because someday, when the Wolves and Knicks actually meet in June, we’ll look back at this meaningless October night at Madison Square Garden and say, “That’s where it started.”

And for those of you trying to watch every second of Wolves basketball this season, FanDuel Sports Network North is offering a 30-day free trial for Wolves fans. Use the promo code SBNFALL30 and lock it in now.

Because let’s face it—this season’s shaping up to be epic, and you don’t want to miss the sequel.

It’s been one year and one week since Karl-Anthony Towns traded in his snow boots for Broadway lights. One year since the Timberwolves and Knicks shocked the league with the blockbuster that sent KAT to New York in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and the draft pick that became rookie Jean Baringer. One year since Minnesota fans woke up wondering if they’d just traded away their franchise cornerstone—or escaped salary-cap hell with seconds to spare.

Now, the reunion’s here. Wolves vs. Knicks. Towns vs. his old crew. Edwards vs. Madison Square Garden. Randle’s revenge game. A meaningless preseason matchup… that absolutely means something.

And yes, the basketball gods have done us a favor: this one’s on NBA TV. Finally, a preseason game you can actually watch without digging through Reddit threads and questionable streaming links.

The Trade Heard Around the (Cold) World

Let’s rewind to October 2024. The Wolves were a team on the rise but trapped in the financial labyrinth known as the second apron. Tim Connelly—Minnesota’s front-office wizard and resident capologist—saw the storm coming. Towns’ contract was a luxury-tax time bomb. Keeping him alongside Rudy Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and the rest of the core would’ve pushed the Wolves into a financial zone so dangerous it made even the Lakers flinch.

So Connelly did the unthinkable: he called up the Knicks.

New York, desperate for another All-Star to pair with Jalen Brunson, said, “Yes, please.” Minnesota shipped KAT east, and in return got Julius Randle (an emotional rollercoaster disguised as a power forward), Donte DiVincenzo (a Villanova guy—so, automatically a chemistry guy), and the 18th pick that became Jean Baringer (aka “French Naz Reid Jr.”).

Fans were gutted. You don’t just move on from your decade-long franchise face overnight. But here’s the crazy thing: it worked out for both sides.

A Year Later: Everyone’s Eating

The Wolves didn’t fall off. Despite the usual midseason drama and a few “is Finch safe?” whispers, they clawed back to a second consecutive Western Conference Finals. Anthony Edwards leveled up again, Gobert stayed healthy, and Naz Reid kept being everyone’s favorite “if he played in New York, he’d be an All-Star” guy.

Meanwhile, the Knicks finally felt like the Knicks. Towns thrived under Tom Thibodeau’s structured chaos, Brunson made another leap, and Madison Square Garden turned into a Broadway version of Target Center—with fewer flannel shirts and more expensive cocktails. New York reached the Eastern Conference Finals before running into the buzzsaw known as Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers.

Here’s the fun “what if” that nobody talks about: if both teams had just won one more series, we would’ve gotten Timberwolves vs. Knicks in the 2025 NBA Finals. Imagine that. KAT vs. Ant. Randle vs. New York. It would’ve been chaos. It still might be.

This preseason matchup doesn’t count for anything—but it feels like a teaser trailer for something we might see in June 2026.

The Subplots

1. The Karl-Anthony Towns Revenge Factor

You know KAT’s circling this one. Even if it’s just preseason, the man’s wired for pride. Expect a few early fadeaway jumpers and at least one “y’all miss me yet?” glance toward the Wolves bench.

2. Julius Randle’s Return to the Garden

Randle’s relationship with Knicks fans was always complicated—like watching Ross and Rachel argue for 10 seasons straight. But this is a chance for him to walk into MSG with the swagger of “I told you so.” Expect some side-eye from the crowd and maybe a few passive-aggressive boos.

3. The Backup Point Guard Battle

Mike Conley Jr. remains the steady hand, but who’s next in line? Bones Hyland looks like the early favorite—he’s been confident, creative, and occasionally reckless in all the fun ways. Rob Dillingham’s struggled, but the Garden’s been good to him before. If there’s any place for a comeback game, it’s here.

4. Johnny Juzang: The Human Heat Check

Every team has a “why isn’t he playing more?” guy. For Minnesota, it’s Johnny Juzang. After lighting up Indiana like a Netflix Christmas tree, Juzang’s fighting for that 15th roster spot. If he hits a couple of threes tonight, Wolves Twitter will go full “Start Johnny!” mode by morning.

The Bigger Picture

Let’s be honest: preseason basketball is glorified stretching. No one’s diving for loose balls or running switch-heavy defenses. But it’s also where identity starts forming. The Wolves can’t afford to coast—not in the West, not with Ant’s prime knocking. The Thunder and Pacers just proved what happens when young teams play with relentless energy.

If the Wolves want to go from “really good” to “title contender,” it starts in games like this—finding rhythm, building cohesion, and setting the tone.

So tune in. NBA TV, KFAN FM, the Wolves app—whatever you’ve got. Because someday, when the Wolves and Knicks actually meet in June, we’ll look back at this meaningless October night at Madison Square Garden and say, “That’s where it started.”

As I watched Johnny Juzang lead a fourth quarter comeback amongst a smattering of third-string NBA players, many of whom won’t ever play a single regular season game, inspiration hit me.

Yes. Inspiration struck around 7:19 p.m. (PT) on a Tuesday evening amid a meaningless 20-point preseason blowout.

I couldn’t help but find myself glued to my laptop, haphazardly picking at the dinner my wife had just worked hard to prepare for us. Something special was happening in this game. We were witnessing a rare occurrence of something I’ve often fantasized myself to be: An Asian NBA player dominating a game.

On my favorite team.

Sometimes columns write you.

Though Juzang played so well that he got himself subbed out of the game for a deeper bench warmer (The Timberwolves would have surely won had he stayed in), it hardly phased me. My brain was already replaying times when similar emotions had been evoked in the past. As aforementioned, this was rare occasion, but not the first.

What does an Asian basketball player playing for my favorite basketball team mean to me?

View Link

Let’s prime this with a quick history about the Minnesota Timberwolves and the country of Asia. The Wolves played two regular season games against the Sacramento Kings in Tokyo, Japan to open the 1999-2000 season. It wasn’t until 18 years later when Minnesota traveled to China for a pair of preseason games in 2017. Most recently, they played Abu Dhabi 2023.

The end.

I may have been raised in the United States, I know there are populations of people who’s exposure to basketball were significantly shaped by the Wolves presence in Asia.

Let’s focus back on what’s happened on the court during the 36 years of Timberwolves existence. Juzang’s explosion had me pondering about what were some of the most memorable moments of Asian players, whatever percentage Asian they are, that have happened while they were in a Wolves jersey?

Wolves Sign Taiwanese Jet Chang to Summer League

Wolves summer roster wins the name game: Jet Chang, Sylven Landesberg, Zabian Dowdell, Lior Eliyahu, Papa Dia…all awesome.
— Canis Hoopus (@canishoopus) July 12, 2012

To start, I’ll fully acknowledge my own bias here. Back when the majority of current Wolves fans weren’t Wolves fans, the Timberwolves signed some cool names to summer league camp. My ears perked up as soon as I heard that Tsung-Hsien “Jet” Chang (張宗憲), who was born and raised in Taiwan before playing division II college ball in Hawaii, made the Minnesota’s 2012 Las Vegas Summer League team.

Sure, he didn’t participate in any of the actual games, but it was still a big moment for Taiwanese Timberwolves fans like myself. I got a glimpse of hope that an Asian player could one day suit up for my favorite basketball team.

Clutch Steal by Chinese-Jamaican Kyle Anderson Defeats Defending Champions

It took a whole decade to pass before any other player of Asian descent dawned a Timberwolves jersey. In 2022, new President of Basketball Operations, Tim Connelly, signed Kyle Anderson. There had not been a lot shared about Kyle Anderson’s ancestry, but in 2023, he explored his roots. Anderson obtained Chinese citizenship ahead of the 2023 FIBA World Cup, connecting back to his great grandfather who was Chinese.

It’s hard to pick just one moment for Li Kaier (李凯尔), as he was an integral part of those early Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns teams. In just two seasons, Anderson became third in Wolves franchise history in total triple-doubles (3). However, one of the moments I was most proud of him was when he picked off a Draymond Green pass, leading to a clutch assist for the go-ahead trey ball by Towns.

This is just a microcosm of who Anderson is as a player. Or should I say, Li.

Dramatic Comeback in OKC Spearheaded by Samoan-African Rob Dillingham

Is Samoa technically a part of Asia? No. But often times, Pacific Islanders may or may not be rightfully lumped together with Asians as it pertains to Western acknowledgement of ethnicities. I can get into a deeper academic dive into this topic, but that’s not why we’re here.

For the purpose of this piece, I’ll add recent lottery pick, Rob Dillingham, to this list.

The 20-year-old hasn’t been quite what many had expected him to be in his young career thus far (See: Yesterday’s game), but he did have moments during his rookie season. The one that I’ll always remember is when he helped lead a late charge against the soon-to-be-crowned NBA champion, Oklahoma City Thunder. He may not have had the signature game-winning block that Anthony Edwards had, but like Anderson, Dillingham made a ton of crucial plays to help pull the Wolves get an opportunity to steal a win against a champion-level team.

Vietnamese-Creole Johnny Juzang Goes Berserk in Preseason

Is that Troy Brown Jr.? That’s not Matt Ryan, is it? Wait, is that Sean Kilpatrick’s music? No, no, and no. This, is one Mr. Johnny Juzang. A flame thrower that has shot 9 of 15 (60%) through the first two Wolves preseason games. I know what you’re thinking – None of this counts. But when man’s is canning five straight triples without a miss?

You got to take notice.

Especially as someone who grew up without many basketball skills other than being able to somewhat shoot the ball, there aren’t many other outcomes that would get me more hyped than this. An Asian player, on the Timberwolves, sinking long distance shots with reckless abandon.

So back to the unanswered question of what an Asian basketball player playing for my favorite basketball team means to me.

It means everything.

It means I can see someone living the dream that I literally dream about. Till this day. However uncommon these instances have been, even though these players don’t know of my existence, I am positive they know people just like me around the world are being inspired. Don’t take it from me, as I’m just one of the billions of Asian people in the world who <s>had</s> have hoop dreams.

Take it from one of the few people who’ve actually made it, and will hopefully make it again this season.

“I will get messages or hear stories about how I inspire people, regardless of their heritage. Sometimes there are people of Asian decent.
Minnesota Timberwolves basketball is back in downtown Minneapolis.

For the first time since the Western Conference Finals back in May, Timberwolves fans were welcomed into Target Center to cheer on their favorite team for the team’s preseason home opener Tuesday night against the Indiana Pacers.

The Wolves had their full starting rotation available to them aside from Jaden McDaniels, who was out due to personal reasons. In McDaniels’ place in the starting lineup was Naz Reid, pairing him with the two other bigs on the Wolves roster, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert.

The first half played out almost exactly like the two regular-season games against Indiana last year, as Minnesota struggled to contain the Pacers’ ball movement and fast pace. The Pacers connected on 21 of their first 33 shots, giving them 57 points midway through the second quarter.

The Timberwolves’ defense finally started getting some stops when Jaylen Clark checked into the game. Clark provided more of the frenetic defense we saw from him all of last season as he continues to show he deserves minutes in the Wolves’ rotation. Unfortunately, Clark was out for the second half with neck spasms after a collision with Delon Wright.

Anthony Edwards made his preseason debut, picking up right where he left off last season, scoring 17 points on 6-15 shooting, including a pair of makes from beyond the arc and a pretty reverse layup.

Julius Randle also played in his first game of the season, putting up 14 points on 11 shots to go along with four rebounds and an assist.

Terrence Shannon Jr. continued his strong play in preparation for his sophomore season, which will likely see him in the rotation from the start of the season. Shannon with nine points and five assists, three steals, and a pair of 3-pointers.

With the starters sitting out the second half, the Pacers went up by as many as 24 points with Johnny Furphy outscoring Minnesota 9-0 to start the third quarter. After a 14-0 Indiana run, the bench lineup, which included Johnny Juzang and Bones Hyland, brought the Wolves all the way back to within just one point late in the fourth quarter.

Juzang, who is fighting to secure the Wolves’ 15th and final roster spot, scored 20 points, including 6-8 from deep. Bones Hyland continues to look like a quality bench guard behind Mike Conley, scoring 11 points, including three 3-pointers of his own.

The Pacers did push their lead back to seven points before the Wolves tied the game with a fastbreak layup from Zyon Pullin with 32 seconds left, sending the game to overtime. With the training camp roster out on the floor, the Timberwolves fell by a final score of 135-134, bringing their preseason record to 1-1.

Back in August, the tech giant debuted a feature called “Preferred Sources.” It’s a way for Google to prominently feature the results from websites you trust, like Canis Hoopus:

“With the launch of Preferred Sources in the U.S. and India, you can select your favorite sources and stay up to date on the latest content from the sites you follow and subscribe to — whether that’s your favorite sports blog or a local news outlet. …

When you select your preferred sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.“
