20.
A Pritchard second-quarter three-pointer made the 2024-25 Celtics the all-time leaders in three-pointers made in a single season.

BOSTON — When Payton Pritchard hit his third three-pointer of the night in Friday’s Celtics game against the Phoenix Suns, NBA history was made. That’s because the Sixth Man of the Year’s trey marked the Celtics’ 1364th three-pointer of the season — setting a new NBA record for most threes in a single season.

  28.
That surpasses the Golden State Warriors’ record from 2023; that Steph Curry and Klay Thompson-led squad made 1,363 three-pointers fresh off their championship season.

  29.
In third place? Last year’s Celtics team — which made 1,351 three-pointers. Most stunning is that the Celtics still have 5 (and a half) games left to play to build upon this record. The 2023 Celtics have the fifth-most threes in NBA history, meaning that under Joe Mazzulla, the Celtics have three of the top five seasons when it comes to made three-pointers, per 98.5’s Sean Grande.

  32.
The 3 by Payton Pritchard is the Celtics’ 8th of the night, and the 1,364th of the season.

That’s a new NBA record.

The Celtics have five games left after tonight. pic.twitter.com/4MsZwKwh1m
— Sean Grande (@SeanGrandePBP) April 5, 2025

  35.
  36.

  37.
Last month, when Mazzulla was asked about the Celtics inching toward the league’s all-time record, he said simply: “Red Auerbach said it best. Rebounding is the second most important thing. The first is shooting.”

  38.
The Celtics have hit way more threes than any other NBA team this season; they held a 156-shot advantage over the Cleveland Cavaliers entering Friday’s game. The Celtics are shooting 36.9% from three this season, good for 8th-best in the NBA.

  39.
Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard continue three-man race for the Celtics’ single-season three-point record

  40.
Tatum, White, and Pritchard remain in a three-way race for most threes in a single season in Celtics history. White broke the record on Monday in Memphis when he hit his 246th three-pointer of the season, surpassing Isaiah Thomas’s 2017 record.

  41.

  42.

  43.
246 3-POINTERS

Derrick White now holds the @celtics record for 3PM in a season! pic.twitter.com/AEA55RDPym
— NBA (@NBA) April 1, 2025
  44.

  45.
  46.
  47.

  48.
White said he was surprised to find himself in that position, pointing to how he didn’t shoot many threes when he first entered the league.

  49.
“I mean, did you watch me early in my career?” White said with a smile. “I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.”

  50.
Entering Friday, Tatum was averaging 10.1 threes on 34.6% shooting, White 9.1 threes on 38% shooting, and Pritchard 7.9 threes on 41% shooting. White had made 249 threes, Tatum 242, and Pritchard 240. Depending on rest down the stretch (or just hot shooting), one of Tatum or Pritchard could claim the top spot on the three-point leaderboard before the year’s end.

  51.
But regardless of which of the three ends up on top, the Celtics as a team have set a new collective record.

  72.
The Celtics look to get back on track as they host the Phoenix Suns.

  73.
The Celtics look to get back on track as they host the Phoenix Suns. This is the 2nd and final game between these two teams this season. The Celtics won the first game 132-102 on their recent road trip. The Celtics won the series 2-0 last season. The Celtics are 78-60 overall all time and 43-24 in games played in Boston.

  74.
The Suns kept their core of stars together from last season with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and Grayson Allen all returning from last year’s team. They fired head coach Frank Vogel and hired Mike Budenholzer to replace him. They signed Ryan Dunn to a rookie contract and signed free agents Oso Ighodaro, Mason Plumlee, Monte Mooris and Tyus Jones. At the trade deadlinet they traded Josh Okogie to Charlotte for Nick Richards and waived EJ Liddell and Nassir Little. They also traded Jusuf Nurkic to Charlotte for Cody Martin and Vasa Micic.

  75.
The Celtics remain 2nd in the East. They are 5 games behind 1st place Cleveland. They are 8 games ahead of 3rd place New York and 11 games ahead of 4th place Indiana. They are 24-13 at home and 9-1 in their last 10 games. They are 21-8 against Western Conference teams. They are coming off a loss in their last game after winning their previous 9 games.

  76.
The Suns have fallen to 11th in the West, 29 games behind first place Oklahoma City. They are 1 game behind 10th place Sacramento and 2.5 games behind 9th place Dallas. They are 2 games ahead of 12th place Portland. The Suns are 12-26 on the road and they are 5-5 in their last 10 games. They are 14-14 against Eastern Conference teams and have lost their last 4 games.

  77.

  78.
The Celtics just completed the first 6-0 road trip in Celtics history. The lost their first game back at home 124-103 to the Heat. After this game against Phoenix at home they will head back on the road for back to back games at New York and at Orlando. They will finish the season with 2 games against the Charlotte Hornets at home.

  79.
The Suns are playing in the 2nd game of a 3 game road trip. They lost to Milwaukee in the first game and have had 2 days off. They will close out the road trip in New York on Sunday. They finish the season with games at home against Golden State, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio before a final game at Sacramento.

  80.
Kristaps Porzingis missed Wednesday’s game due to return-from-illness reconditioning. Al Horford also sat out Wednesday to rest his sprained toe. Jrue Holiday was also out on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness. All 3 are currently off the injury report. Jaylen Brown played Wednesday but is questionable with knee soreness that has been hampering him for several games now.

  81.
For the Phoenix Suns, Bradley Beal has been out with a hamstring injury since March 16. He is returning for this game and I’m going to guess that he will return to the starting lineup. However, they may opt to ease him in off the bench. The Suns get one star back and lose another as Kevin Durant will be out for this game with a sprained ankle.

  95.

  96.
Jrue Holiday vs Devin Booker
Booker is averaging 25.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. He is shooting 45.6% from the field and 33.8% from beyond the arc. In the first game against the Celtics, he finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists while shooting 30.8% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc. Booker can put up a lot of points in a hurry as he showed in his 70 point game at the TD Garden in 2017.

  97.

  98.
Derrick White vs Bradley Beal
Beal is averaging 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1 steal per game. He is shooting 50.5% from the field and 39.5% from beyond the arc. Beal missed the first game against the Celtics in Phoenix. I’m expecting him to move back into the starting lineup, but it’s possible he comes off the bench.

  99.
Honorable Mention
Jaylen Brown vs Grayson Allen
I’m guessing that Allen will start in place of Durant. He is averaging 10.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He is shooting 44.6% from the field and 43.1% from beyond the arc. In the first game against the Celtics, he came off the bench and finished with just 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal while not hitting a field goal. He is a good 3 point shooter and so the Celtics need to defend him on the perimeter.

  100.
Keys to the Game
Defense - Defense is always a key to winning. The Celtics have a defensive rating of 110.6 (5th) and the Suns have a defensive rating of 117.5 (27th). The Suns take 37.7 threes per game shoot 38.4% from beyond the arc. The Celtics allowed the Heat to shoot 51.8% from the field and 46.7% from beyond the arc. They need to do much better on defense in this game. The Suns are a good shooting team and the Celtics will need to up their defense if they want to beat them.

  101.
Rebound - The Celtics need to rebound on the offensive end to give themselves extra possessions and to prevent the Suns from racking up fast break points. They also have to crash the boards on the defensive end to prevent the Suns from getting tip ins and second chance points. The Celtics are 10th with 45.0 rebounds per game while the Suns are 25th with 42.6 rebounds per game. Rebounding is all about effort and the Celtics are going to have to put out extra effort to win the battle of the boards.

  102.
Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to come out and be aggressive right from the opening tip. They have to be aggressive on defense, driving to the basket, rebounding, diving for loose balls and just playing harder in general. They need to get off to a strong start and play hard right up until the final buzzer. They can’t let the Suns outwork them for any period of time because even the best team in the league can lose to the worst if they don’t play with effort.

  103.
Move the Ball Carefully - The Celtics need to move the ball in order to find the best shot on each possession. When the ball sticks and players try to do too much, the Celtics struggle. They are at their best when they pass the ball and keep it moving. ISO ball is not usually winning ball. The Celtics are 41-2 when they have more assists than their opponent but just 13-17 when they have fewer assists than their opponent. Against the Heat, they had just 24 assists to 28 for the Heat. They need to keep the ball moving and find the open man.

  104.
X-Factors
Home Game - The Celtics are at home where they should get a boost from the home crowd. They need to focus on the game and gain motivation from having the fans behind them. The Suns are playing in the 2nd game of a 3 game road trip and should be dealing with distractions from travel, staying in a hotel, and playing in a hostile arena as well as fatigue from traveling. The Celtics need to protect home court and come out ready to play hard.

  105.
Officiating - I know that I say this every game, but the officiating always has the possibility to be an x-factor in every game. Every crew calls the game differently, whether they call every little ticky tack foul or they let a lot of contact go and let the teams play. Some refs favor the home team and some call for both teams evenly. The Celtics have got to adjust to the way the game is being called and not allow the officiating to take away from their focus.

  249.
Maine led by double-digits early on, but the Knicks made a second-half push to tie the game at 76 midway through the third quarter.

  250.
Then, the Celtics closed out the third quarter on a 27-10 run to take a 17-point lead entering the fourth quarter, in large part thanks to JD Davison, who exploded for 14 points in the final four minutes of the period.

  251.
JD Davison catches fire in the third quarter to lead the Celtics

  252.
Just a day after he was awarded G League MVP, JD Davison put together another masterful performance: 32 points, 17 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals.

  253.
After struggling early on, Davison scored 14 points in a pivotal final four minutes of the third quarter and hit two clutch baskets in the final minutes to put the game out of reach, a floater and a pull-up three with just under two minutes to go.

  261.
“I kind of started off slow today, especially in that first half — I missed a couple floaters, I don’t think I hit a three,” Davison said. “Once I hit a three, I think I felt more confident. The team believes in me with the ball in my hand, so I just had to carry the load.”

  262.
For Maine Celtics head coach Tyler Lashbrook, Thursday’s performance was just another example of Davison’s prowess at the head of the snake for the team.

  263.
“You saw it tonight,” Lashbrook said. “We had a little struggle against the two-three [defense] for a little bit, and then JD comes in, settles us down, gets us where we need to be, and then makes the right play from there. I said it in the locker room just now, but that’s why he’s the MVP. It’s not just the numbers, it’s the leadership, its ability to put guys in the right spots and having the answer for every problem that we see.”

  264.
Lashbrook reflected on the chance to let Davison know he won the MVP award on Tuesday night.

  265.
“It was really special,” said the first-year head coach. “It was a special moment for him. He’s been working a long time to get to this point, and he’s taken a real commitment to himself to get better every day, on both sides of the ball, and he’s taking a real leadership role in our team.

  274.
“It’s a lot better being on the team with him now,” Norris said. “I didn’t like playing against JD.”

  275.
Jordan Walsh shared how Davison asserts himself as a leader on the team, despite his quiet nature.

  276.
“I feel like a lot of people also underestimate the fact that he’s commanding the floor and telling guys where to go, telling them what to do, getting everybody on the same page, which is really important,” Walsh said, pointing to a moment where he let his emotions get the best of him and Davison got things in order.

  277.
“After I pushed that guy on the free throw line, he was like, ‘Get off the free throw line and go stand back there.’ And I was like, ‘All right, cool.’

  278.
Jordan Walsh once again joins Maine, eager to win a championship

  279.
Jordan Walsh has spent the entire season with the Boston Celtics, but has been a key part of the Maine Celtics’ playoff run. He finished Thursday’s game with 19 points on 8-16 shooting, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists — and is enjoying getting the chance to compete for a G League title.

  280.
“It’s as important as the Boston Celtics going on their playoff run — both of us have a goal of being somewhere, winning something,” Walsh said.

  281.
Walsh was a member of the Maine Celtics team that lost in the Finals last season and said he feels he has “unfinished business” from that loss.

  282.
“The first thing I told him was we needed him to rebound — and he got 11 of them, and so love that,” Lashbrook said.

  283.
Walsh reflected on his growth from his rookie year with Maine to now.

  284.
“I’m better, for sure,” Walsh said. “I feel like I understand my play style and how I fit into systems better. I feel like the buy-in is also greater. The team is different, so trying to find a way to find my role with this team, whether it’s scoring, rebounding, getting stops, or whatever it is, trying to make that happen. But at the end of the day, whatever it is to win is the most important thing, so whatever that moment calls for, that’s how I’m going to try to step up and do.”

  285.
Miles Norris has his best game as a Celtic

  286.
Miles Norris signed a two-way deal with the Celtics last month after spending most of the season with the Memphis Hustle, the Grizzlie’s G League affiliate. Norris took some time to adjust to Maine’s terminology and schemes but had his highest-scoring game with the Maine Celtics when it mattered most, posting 27 points on 9-12 shooting, including 4-7 from three.

  287.
“The first couple weeks, I was just getting the feel for the guys’ style of play,” Norris said. “But I played enough games, practiced enough with the team — I feel really comfortable out there. And a lot of guys help me out as well — playing with JD, [he’s] a great leader, great point guard. So, pretty easy out there.”

  291.
Miles Norris shoots a free throw in Thursday’s playoff game between the Maine Celtics and Westchester Knicks.

  292.

  293.
Norris made crucial plays on both ends in the final minutes — sprinting out to contest a Knicks’ corner three and then subsequently running the floor for an and-one dunk to put the game out of reach.

  294.
Norris was on the College Park Skyhawks last year, and didn’t make the G League playoffs. He’s excited by the prospect of winning a G League championship.

  295.
“Not making the playoffs last year — I was pretty hurt about that,” he said, adding: “Winning is a big thing in this organization.”

  296.
Lashbrook has been impressed with Norris’s growth over the past month.

  297.
“He’s just shown a high level of shot making and athletic ability,” he said. “He’s really bought into what we want from him on the defensive end.”

  298.
Jordan Shakel provides spark off the bench

  299.
Shakel, a second-year Maine Celtics player, scored 15 points and made 5 of 10 three-point attempts in Friday’s game.

  300.
“Shak is such a culture center for us in terms of his toughness and his energy and his resilience,” Lashbrook said.

  308.
Shakel suffered a season-ending knee injury last year but has become an integral part of the Maine rotation this season.

  309.
“Early in the year, he had to sort of battle his way back and get into shape and get his rhythm,” Lashbrook said. “It’s all been built and sorted for this moment. So, we’ve known that he was going to be ready for this. But I just love the energy that he brings and the intensity that he brings. And really, he sets the tone.”

  310.
Shuttling back and forth from the Celtics to the G League

  311.
Jordan Walsh, JD Davison, and Drew Peterson were all at TD Garden on Wednesday night for the Celtics’ regular season game against the Miami Heat, logging 5 minutes each.

  312.
Then, the trio travelled to White Plains to meet up with the rest of the team for Wednesday’s playoff game.

  313.
“I‘m kind of used to it,” Davison said of the two-way grind. “We did it last year, so we knew what was ahead for us. I think everybody was just locked in yesterday.”

  314.
Lashbrook said there was never a doubt about whether Walsh, Davison, and Peterson would return in time for the G League playoff game.

  315.
“They were going to play this game no matter what,” Lashbrook said. “And that just kind of speaks to their resilience, and their grit and the way that they’re wired, and the way that they’re built, and how much they care about this team and that the guys in that locker room.”

  316.
Walsh doesn’t mind missing some time in Boston to be with the team.

  317.
“I feel like this is my home first,” he said. “So I feel like this is just me coming back.”

  318.
A Westchester player signed with the Cavaliers in the middle of the game

  319.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported — in the third quarter of Thursday’s game — that Westchester Knicks forward Chuma Ekeke agreed to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ final roster spot. Ekeke had already played 18 minutes, recording 8 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds, but didn’t check back into the game the rest of the way.

  320.

  321.

  322.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and former first-round pick Chuma Okeke have agreed to a deal, filling the East leaders' final open roster spot, sources tell ESPN. Okeke averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for NBA G League Westchester this season. pic.twitter.com/WuW3DAWLAM
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) April 4, 2025

  324.
  325.
  326.

  327.
The signing didn’t have too much of an impact on the game’s outcome, but it served as a quintessential G League moment that saw a top player in a playoff game switch teams mid-game.

  328.
Next up: Eastern Conference finals vs Mac McClung and the Oceola Magic

  329.
The Celtics will next face the Osceola Magic, the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The team took a bus from White Plains to the airport on Friday morning and are flying straight to Orlando.

  330.
“It’s gonna be a challenge,” Lashbrook said. “It’s gonna be a battle. That team has been on a roll — about the same time that we started getting on our run, they went on their own run. To me, it’s been the two best teams over this last back half of the stretch, and so it’ll be fun game for us to match up.”

  331.
The Magic are led by Mac McClung, who won G League MVP last year and dropped 39 points and 6 assists on Thursday night.

  332.
“Mac is probably the quickest guy I’ve ever guarded,” Davison said. “So I just try to stay in front of him, rough him up a little bit, he’s smaller than me — try to put my hands on him a little bit.”

  351.

  352.
  353.
Ethical or not, KP’s foul-baiting technique has propelled him to elite efficiency in the post.

Who comes to mind when you think of foul grifters – the guys that bend the NBA rulebook to their advantage by drawing fouls through unnatural movements? James Harden and his hooking of the defender’s arms? Jalen Brunson and Trae Young, with their ability to stop short in front of the defense, essentially causing defenders to commit rear-end collisions? Or maybe Joel Embiid, who throws his body into opposing players and somehow ends up on the ground during seemingly 50% of offensive possessions? All of these answers make sense.

  354.
But, don’t forget about the 7-foot-2 Latvian man on the Boston Celtics whose under-the-radar foul baiting technique has propelled his post-up game into one of the league’s most efficient plays. His name is Kristaps Porzingis.

  355.
A note on foul baiting

  356.
Before going any further, I must make something clear. While I know it might make you angry, it must be said: foul baiting is a skill. The term obviously has a negative connotation within basketball circles; when we see a player make an unnatural shooting motion or drive to the hoop exclusively with the goal of getting fouled, we don’t want them to be rewarded with free throws. It feels wrong. It feels unethical. But we need to reframe our thinking to understand that foul grifting is simply a function of players taking full advantage of the NBA rulebook. Don’t hate the player. Hate the game.

  357.
If foul baiting weren’t a skill, everyone would do it. Everyone would bulldoze into defenders and rip through defenders’ arms. But in reality, very few have mastered it, and that’s because it requires body control, footwork, pace and IQ (among many other skills) to effectively carry out the strategy.

  358.
Porzingis in the post

  359.
Kristaps Porzingis has been a premier NBA post-up player since he got to the Celtics. In the 2023-2024 season, there were 36 players who had more than 100 post ups; of those players, Porzingis had the best points per possession (1.30) of anyone. This year, there are 23 players who have had more than 100 post up opportunities; again, the Unicorn ranks first in points per possession (1.20).

  360.
Many have pointed to the Celtics’ unique offensive spacing as the key factors in Kristaps’ post-up success. Boston’s 5-out spacing and dynamic switch-hunting system often leaves Porzingis alone on the block with a smaller defender on him and four other shooters spaced out on the perimeter – the dream post-up scenario. However, people leave out one pivotal point when it comes to KP’s post success: he is a wizard (no pun intended) when it comes to drawing fouls in the post.

  361.
Of the 23 players with more than 100 post-ups this season, Porzingis is fouled more than anyone else – a whopping 24.1% of the time. The next highest foul rate is Julius Randle at 19.1%.

  362.
So, how does he do it?

  363.
The vast majority of Porzingis’ drawn fouls in the post come from his patented rip-through move. He’s often guarded by smaller players who try to swipe low at the ball and get a hand on it before he’s able to get into his shooting motion – because once he gets into his shooting motion, he’s too big and long to contest – but KP uses this to his advantage by feeling the contact and getting into his shooting motion immediately. He uses a combination of IQ and feel to pick the perfect time to rip through.

  364.

  365.

  366.
  367.

  368.
Here, the Latvian legend knows Sexton is going to swipe down at the rock, so he strongly holds the ball and rips it right through his arms. This is probably the most textbook example of the Porzingis rip-through you’ll see. Easy free throws. If you’ve watched the Celtics enough, you are quite familiar with this move.

  369.

  370.

  371.
  372.

  373.
The rip-through move can work on larger players, too. As soon as Porzingis senses Claxton’s hands on his back, he knows it’s time to spin and get right into his shooting motion. He seeks out the contact at the perfect time; if he had been a second later, Claxton might’ve had time to pull his hands back and force him into a bad shot.

  374.
Much of Kristaps’ foul-drawing success can be attributed to the rip-through move, but there’s something else going on as well: opposing players LOVE being physical with him. Defenders clearly view him as soft and weak, thinking they can push him around – but rather than fighting back with physicality, Porzingis just baits them into fouls. It happens in the post, but some of the most illustrative examples of this phenomenon come away from the ball.

  375.

  376.

  377.
  378.

  379.
Royce O’Neal simply cannot help himself. He sees the lanky 7-footer and his ego gets the best of him. He thinks to himself, “I have a lower center of gravity than this guy. He looks awkward and tall. Let’s see how he handles some physicality.” And before you know it, KP is falling backwards.

  380.
Kristaps Porzingis has solidified himself as one of – if not the best – post-up players in the NBA. The Celtics system certainly empowers him by placing him in advantageous mismatches and spacing the floor, but we must not forget that KP is one of the best foul grifters in the NBA – and no, that’s not a bad thing.

  524.
JD Davison spoke about winning G League MVP, played late minutes in the Boston Celtics’ loss on Wednesday, then flew to Westchester for Maine’s playoff game.

BOSTON — JD Davison packed up a suitcase and handbag near his NBA locker and prepared to leave for the road. The Celtics two-way guard received G League MVP honors earlier in the week, arrived in Boston to speak about the award, played five minutes at the end of the Celtics’ loss to the Heat then drove to New York City for Maine’s playoff game alongside Jordan Walsh.

  525.
That’s the story of Davison’s season — really, his three years with the Celtics. This year, he’s separated himself from the field in the G League, joined the Celtics’ pro roster more than ever before, and been the picture of consistency for both squads. That impressed Joe Mazzulla more than Davison’s 25.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game that made his case for MVP. Davison often boarded early flights to join Boston across the map and returned to Maine at odd times to lead them to a third straight postseason appearance.

  526.

  527.
“It’s the two-way grind,” Davison told CelticsBlog after the game. “That’s what I signed up for, but you gotta stay locked in, trying to be where your feet are.”

  528.
Davison centered his mind on that day-to-day approach after signing a third straight two-way last offseason. He didn’t wonder why no NBA opportunities emerged, lament on remaining the organization’s guard depth chart or the fact that he rarely played rotation minutes with Boston across his first three seasons. Brad Stevens emphasized bringing him back and Davison, who also won a championship ring despite doing most of his work two states north, didn’t hesitate to sign up for another year.

  529.
While Jordan Walsh poured a beer on his head in the locker room after Game 5 of the Finals, Davison yelled, “come on, man. Back-to-back, we need this.”

  530.
Almost one year later, when Maine’s playoff run concludes and the regular season ends, Davison won’t be eligible for NBA playoff minutes if he remains on a two-way deal. Boston can affirm the work he’s put in and structure he’s provided Maine’s development program by converting him to the 15th roster spot. But either way, the question remains how the former No. 53 overall pick, still only 22-years-old, will make his long-awaited NBA entrance. He said in the past that he doesn’t know what it’ll take. Celtics teammates told our Noa Dalzell that they believe in his NBA abilities. Jaylen Brown, in particular, grew to mentor him.

  531.
“Knowing where I want to get to, if you want to be a point guard in this league, you gotta be able to talk and lead the guys,” Davison said on Wednesday. “So, knowing that I gotta do that, night in and night out, I gotta break that (shyness) and try to be the best I can be. Just knowing everybody’s journey is different, I take my days, day-by-day, step-by-step and try to stay in the moment, whether I’m playing in the G-League or whether I’m up with the big club. Trying to just stay in the moment and be me at all times ... knowing the end goal.”

  532.

  533.
Davison’s spot NBA opportunities show the hurdle that remains in front of him. While sparse, limited and tough to draw from given that many came late in games, you can at least see the limitations that will challenge his transition, playing a mostly on-ball point guard role at 6-1 while peaking at 33.2% from three in the G-League. Few pass-first guards without a reliable shot exist in the NBA, and defenses attack scoring weaknesses so aggressively now that many teams won’t let him play through struggles for long.

  534.
There’s also an influx of guard talent across the league that grows deeper with each passing draft. Each team has a veteran lead guard or a young point man of the future while position-less basketball pulls in ball-handlers from positions outside of guard. The role Rajon Rondo once filled is becoming increasingly rare across the league.

  535.
Dallas could use some depth if Kyrie Irving misses time next year, Portland gave Dalano Banton a chance, Sacramento recently signed Markelle Fultz, Charlotte could use some help at point and Charles Lee’s presence there at least provides a Boston connection. Mike Conley turns 38 next season for Minnesota. The Heat have struggled to find consistent guard play alongside Tyler Herro post-Jimmy Butler. The Jazz love to sign former Celtics.

  536.
Then, there’s Boston, facing difficult decisions this offseason that could include moving on from Jrue Holiday, according to Jake Fischer. The Celtics have hyped their track record of funneling talent from the G League to NBA level, and there’s familiarity with Davison. Minutes wouldn’t be guaranteed with Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and perhaps a rookie or veteran addition in front of him, but it’s not unimaginable to think Davison could stay in the mix.

  537.
There’s also the reality that G League developments often lead to NBA opportunities elsewhere. The Celtics themselves signed Drew Peterson away from the Heat program. Miles Norris played with Atlanta and Memphis before joining Boston. There’s no clear destination for Davison even with an MVP in hand, but he’s focused on the next city on the map.

  538.

  539.
During those long waits and travel days, he stretches his legs, talks to his mom on the phone and remembers what he signed up for. Then, he breaks a sweat at the arena, shoots a few shots and he joins the team on the floor for tip-off. Last month, a trip west led to his first significant NBA run alongside Jayson Tatum in the first half at Portland.

  540.
“The Utah game, not too long ago, we flew, got delayed, so we had to get a whole other flight, flight had to stop, so we got to the game around 6:30, 6:40, the game started at 7, so we had to throw the clothes on and get on the court,” he recalled. “We drove from Maine, flew from Boston, had a direct flight to Utah and it got cancelled, so we had to get another flight. So we went from Delta Airlines all the way to United Airlines, where the flight was at 12, went from there to Chicago, then Chicago to Utah.”

  560.
The Celtics’ guard is the first to have an endorsement deal with the Boston-based company since Larry Bird/

Payton Pritchard has signed a shoe deal with Converse, the brand announced Thursday.

  561.
“As a player, I’m always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible, and Converse shares that same mindset,” Pritchard said in a press release. “I’m excited to join the Converse Basketball family and help inspire the next generation of athletes to find their voice and express themselves on and off the court.”

  562.
Pritchard joins the Converse ranks with Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Philadelphia’s Kelly Oubre Jr.

  570.
The shoe company is based out of Boston, making the partnership between Converse and the Celtics’ guard make all the more sense. The last Celtic with a Converse shoe deal was Larry Bird.

  571.
“With a shared commitment to the sport and our community, Payton and Converse are poised to make an impact in the world of basketball, both here in Boston and beyond,” Converse CEO Jared Carver said in a press release. “As Converse Hoops continues to gain momentum, we’re excited to partner with Payton, amplify his passion and commitment to the game, and inspire a new generation of creatives to follow in his footsteps.”

  572.
The deal comes at a great time for Pritchard, who is the frontrunner for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award and is averaging a career-high 14 points on 41% shooting from three.

  573.
Prtichard will be sporting the All Star BB Trilliant CX for the remainder of the season.
