20.
Another result, but not yet a win.

The San Jose Earthquakes posted their second road draw on the trot, but their winless run now stretches to nine games, after tying the Colorado Rapids 1-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday.

 21.
This was another credible performance on the road for the Earthquakes, but as they try to find traction in their season and come back, they really need wins at this point and are still lacking the cutting edge to hold onto a lead, a persistent problem this season.

 22.
Benji Kikanovic made his first start in MLS in this game for the Earthquakes, with Shea Salinas also in the XI on the night.

 23.
San Jose were patient to begin the game, with the ball largely deep in their end to start the game, but the breakthrough came in the 11th minute, with Cade Cowell giving Chofís Lopez a layoff and the Mexican smashing in the goal, with a bit of a fortunate deflection on the way, to give the Earthquakes an early 1-0 lead.

 24.

 29.

 30.
As the first half progressed, Colorado worked and worked to get an equalizer, but San Jose held firm enough, and while the Rapids had a 7-3 edge in total shots through the first 45, the Earthquakes didn’t concede any shots on target and went to halftime leading 1-0.

 31.
Chris Wondolowski replaced Kikanovic at halftime, and the Quakes tried to push for an insurance goal, but Colorado tied the game in the 52nd minute through Cole Bassett, who took a switch and buried an angled shot past JT Marcinkowski.

 38.
Luciano Abecasis replaced Cristian Espinoza in the 66th minute. A few minutes later, Matias Almeyda’s personal interpreter, Agustin Zalazar, was sent off and had to leave the sideline after he and Almeyda got into a sustained argument with the officials.

 39.

 41.
This is wild.

Matías Almeyda's translator just got kicked out the game. #COLvSJ pic.twitter.com/fTT716Udth
— Major League Soccer (@MLS) July 18, 2021

 43.
 44.

 45.
Jack Skahan entered the fray in the 75th minute for Chofís, with San Jose getting closer to trying to hold on for a draw in the final minutes of the game. Andy Rios and Siad Haji were the final Quakes’ changes of the night, replacing Oswaldo Alanís and Marcos Lopez.

 46.
Grading on a curve, this was a good performance and solid result for the Earthquakes. It’s hard to win on the road, and again Cowell to Chofís was a productive partnership. But if this team wants to be a contender, they need to win at least some of these games, and there’s still work to be done on that front.

 47.
San Jose are next scheduled to be in action on Wednesday when they’ll take on Sporting Kansas City in Kansas. Sporting have had the Earthquakes’ number the last couple meetings, but maybe this time will be different? Time will tell.

 84.
The San Jose Earthquakes are coming off a break in the campaign and a decent draw on the road, and they’ll attempt to get back in the win column on Saturday when they face the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

 85.
The Earthquakes last took on Minnesota United, posting a solid 2-2 draw against a team that has been a boogeyman for San Jose in recent years. Since then, they’ve had two weeks off to rest, recuperate and train ahead of the next run of games, and they still have an eight-game winless run that they’ll try to snap in this game.

 86.
The Rapids have only lost three times this season but have been a bit all over the place so far. Robin Fraser seems to be finding some traction with a homegrown-heavy squad, although leading fullback Sam Vines is on international duty and rumored to be on the verge of a move to Europe.

 87.
Tommy Thompson is out on the injury report with a knee ailment, while Carlos Fierro (leg) and Judson (back) are questionable. Jackson Yueill is on international duty, so he’s out as well, but Marcos Lopez could make his return after over six weeks away on international duty. In addition to Vines, Jonathan Lewis and Kellyn Acosta are out for Colorado while on international duty, while Younes Namli is listed out on the injury report.

 88.
Can the Earthquakes begin the next chunk of games with a good result on the road? Or will the Rapids continue their unbeaten run against the Quakes? Here’s hoping this is a great game for the visiting team.

 89.
Odds:

 90.
Our partners at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Friday evening have San Jose at (+450), Colorado at (-170) and a draw at (+330). That means the Quakes are big underdogs on the road, so we’ll see what happens.

 91.
How to Watch:

 92.
Saturday’s match between the Quakes and Rapids will be televised locally on NBC Sports California and streamed in the rest of the United States on ESPN+. 113.
Defender feeling more comfortable while still soaking it all in.

The MLS Draft may no longer be a place where teams find lock-down starters every year, but it remains a place where teams can find solid domestic defenders.

 114.
San Jose Earthquakes defender Tanner Beason was drafted ahead of the 2020 season out of Stanford and amid the disruptive season that came during the pandemic, he didn’t get a ton of attention, but played his way into Matias Almeyda’s rotation in his rookie season.

 115.
In talking to reporters on Wednesday, Beason admitted now in his second season, he feels more comfortable with the speed of play and life as a professional.

 116.
“I feel more and more comfortable each time out there, obviously last year, my first few appearances and stuff there you feel nervy,” Beason said. “It’s a different level, so you’re kind of adjusting to those kinds of differences, of those kinds of elevated things in terms of the speed of the game and the players and all the people around you and it’s a new system. And so I feel that I have enough minutes under my belt to where I’m still learning, I’m still improving each time. But I do feel comfortable, growing in confidence and comfort in the people around me, I’ve been able to play more minutes with everyone around me, and that kind of stuff helps.”

 117.
Beason has made six appearances this season, five of those starts, and the North Carolina native doesn’t seem to just be a fill-in for the more experienced Florian Jungwirth and Oswaldo Alanís — he seems to be fully in Almeyda’s central defensive rotation.

 118.
But with the club recently signing another center back, in Nathan, competition will ramp up in the back. At 24, Beason is prepared to soak up what he can from his experienced teammates.

 119.
“I definitely enjoyed playing alongside of Oswaldo and Florian at different times, and other guys as well of course, I’m coming into a place where there’s a lot of people with great experience so for me, just as I’m trying to take advantage of each day and each game, trying to get better and improve, I’m absolutely making use of the amazing resources that I have with, with regard to my teammates. Guys like Oswaldo and Flo have tremendous experiences in their career in all kinds of different places so yeah always trying to talk to those guys and and see what little, little things I can take away from their experiences and and their games,” Beason said.

 120.
Beason called Nathan “charismatic” and praised the Brazilian since his arrival.

 121.
“He played with great intensity and passion the other day. That was awesome to see. It’s always fun to play with people that play like that. And yeah, looking forward to continuing to play alongside him and like I’ve said before, build a connection and relationship there because I think the more minutes you play with someone, the better kind of understanding you have with that person on the field. And then that just translates to the kind of chemistry and better understanding, in the most important moments defensively.”

 122.
While Beason is still just getting started in his career, his quiet but steady play looks like it will offer him more opportunities in the months and perhaps years ahead.

 142.
Earthquakes manager thrilled title drought is over.

“Yes, I am very happy for my country.”

 143.
It was a stunning moment on the San Jose Earthquakes beat: head coach Matias Almeyda responding to a question in English, something he does not do, as he normally answers questions in his native Spanish.

 144.
But the circumstances that brought us to that moment on Wednesday were stunning too, after Argentina won the 2021 Copa América last weekend.

 145.
Considering Argentina is a soccer-crazed country generally and the men’s national team is perpetually regarded as part of the handful of contenders in every competition it enters, the fact that they went 28 years between winning a major competition is, itself, stunning.

 146.
“Winning this Copa América was really important for Argentina,” Almeyda went on to say to reporters through an interpreter. “It gives our football pedigree again. This victory has a great meaning, the fact that [Lionel] Messi won’t be asked of anything anymore, that [Angel] Di Maria won’t get criticized as much, that they won’t rush to talk about a coach or a coaching staff. Thanks to the sport and thanks to the players that win the Copa América and everyone that was on the coaching staff in my country, thanks to the sport that gives people joy...because it gives the people who are going through a hard time a smile. And as an Argentinian, I’m thankful to the players, the coaching staff and the executives who gave the people this victory.”

 147.
Almeyda did win an Olympic silver medal from the 1996 Atlanta games, but his own international playing career, which spanned 40 caps from 1996-2003, came in the middle of the major title drought for Argentina.

 148.
Much as Messi’s relief when he won the title on Saturday was palpable to all watching, the same could be said for Almeyda’s shock use of English and his grin as he said it in celebration of his country’s triumph from afar this week.

 169.
Youngster played his part in tourney for his country.

Marcos Lopez should be returning to the San Jose Earthquakes in the coming days, after missing more than a month of action with his club, while out on international duty. Fortunately, it was a pretty decent outcome for him personally.

 170.
Lopez’s Peru finished in 4th place at the 2021 Copa América in Brazil on Friday, after they lost a nail-biter 3-2 to Colombia in the 3rd place game. Lopez featured in Peru’s final game of the competition, getting the start for Ricardo Gareca’s team.

 176.

 177.
While Peru was knocked out of a berth in the competition final by host Brazil and Colombia beat them in the consolation game, 4th place is still pretty impressive for Peru. While the Copa América is usually a 12-team tournament and this time was a 10-team marathon, don’t let the relative lack of teams fool you — this is almost certainly the most competitive regional competition in the world. So finishing 4th is a good showing, even if Peru has been racking up semifinal berths the past few tournaments.

 178.
Congrats to Marcos on the sojourn with his national team, and hope he’s able to recover quickly for the next phase of the Earthquakes’ season.

 198.
 199.
Will it change the team’s trajectory?

In news that is not news anymore (sorry, I was on vacation), Jesse Fioranelli was fired as the San Jose Earthquakes’ general manager last week. I spoke to Jesse a few times the past couple years, and as everyone who has interacted with him in this business has said, he struck me as a kind guy who was more publicly honest than most people in his position.

 200.
But the Earthquakes have not been one of the free-spending teams in MLS, which means they have to be one of the smartest in terms of recruitment, and by and large they’ve missed in that regard. The Mikael Stahre “era” was an unmitigated disaster and arguably put the club in a hole they’re still trying to get out of.

 201.
While the fanbase seems to be souring over current head coach Matias Almeyda, in fact his appointment has been the most successful part of Fioranelli’s tenure with the Earthquakes. San Jose is not Los Angeles (you’re damn right, I hear you saying) or Miami, so recruitment of stars is tougher even if they could spend. Almeyda’s style of soccer is directly from the Marcelo Bielsa school, which always takes the challenge of making a team stronger than the sum of its parts over being the big team that crushes opponents through financial resources. Almeyda actually transformed one of Mexico’s biggest clubs, Chivas, by treating it like the scrappy underdog it was when he took over. Improbably, he fits in with a project like San Jose’s.

 202.
After promising several significant signings for 2021, the Earthquakes added Chofís Lopez, who is a reclamation project that could come good, and rotation fullback Luciano Abecasis. Eric Remedi was just the second player acquired via MLS trade in Fioranelli’s tenure, and he’s been good, honestly. Just before Fioranelli’s departure, they signed a center back, finally, in Nathan. But the team needs two or three more starting-caliber players, particularly in attack, and it’s been crickets. Meanwhile, the team is sinking down the standings on a long winless run.

 203.
So it’s fully and completely Almeyda’s team now. It’s obvious that Fioranelli’s signings have largely been players that Almeyda wants — most of them have previously played for the Argentine. With the GM gone, all the decisions from here on out are Almeyda’s, and that means the pressure is truly on him to make a few signings, get the team — however it is constituted — back on track and competing for the playoffs again, and hopefully show some improvement.

 204.
Will this be a semi-lame duck year for Almeyda, before he takes off and puts the Earthquakes back at square one? Or will he make another great escape this season with this team? This is definitely a tipping point for the club, but we don’t know what kind of tipping point it is until we get some hindsight. Hopefully, building off the credible draw at Minnesota United at the weekend, the team comes back from their mini-break back on track, but we’ll see what happens.

 225.
Manager determined to get team back on track.

The pieces were in place for a special night on Saturday for the San Jose Earthquakes, but it wasn’t meant to be.

 226.
A six-game winless run coming in, including a battering midweek on the road, came up against a resurgent LA Galaxy team in the Cali Clasico at PayPal Park, but even with a full crowd and hope that the Quakes would turn it on in the derby once again, it didn’t break that way, as San Jose lost 3-1.

 227.
The winless streak is now seven games for the Earthquakes, six of those losses, and while the club was in a similar position last season before rising from the dead, seemingly out of nowhere, there’s a fear this may not be a feat that can be replicated.

 228.
Still, head coach Matias Almeyda was unbowed postgame and when asked if the team is searching for more midseason reinforcements after the addition of defender Nathan last week, the manager waxed philosophical.

 229.
“I think Nathan’s arrival reinforces us defensively,” Almeyda said through an interpreter. “Having depth and backups is always good. I’ve spoken to Jesse [Fioranelli, the GM] and the owner quite a bit recently, and I’ve given them my opinions regarding what we’re looking for in San Jose in the future.

 230.
“All coaches always want to have deep squads, that’s normal. We have a roster with lots of youngsters where surely our project and our process, today, it’s really clear it’s different than the Galaxy’s, for example. Our idea is always to compete, but we know our youngsters still have a lot ahead of them to learn, so there’s two different teams that are going to play two different things. One team that’s formed to fight for the title, which is the Galaxy today, and our process is slower, even though we still want to win,” he added.

 231.
While Cade Cowell’s late consolation goal was really the only highlight on the night from an Earthquakes perspective on the field, Almeyda seemed visibly boosted by the crowd in attendance and the presence of his mother visiting from Argentina, after his father’s death from COVID earlier this year.

 232.
“Honestly I wanted to congratulate [the crowd]. Playing with so many fans there is always so nice, a good feeling,” he said. “To me, today’s game was really special, my mother got to know our stadium. She’s visiting me here and my wish is that my father would also be here. Everybody knows what happened with my father, but it made me happy, I told my mother what this club still means to me. Obviously I wanted a victory.”

 233.
Perhaps most notably, considering the skid the Quakes are on and the constant speculation surrounding Almeyda about his future, he ended the translated portion of his postgame remarks by reiterating his commitment to the Earthquakes.

 234.
“In life we have to accept when things get sort of twisted. We will double down our bet to push forward. If there’s one thing that’s characterized me in my personal and sporting life, it’s to never drop my arms. We keep going forward until there’s no way around it, and then people above me would have to make decisions. As long as I have the chance to work, I have the energy and desire intact, because I’m aware of the steps that we’re taking,” he said.

 256.
Cali Clasico at home does not go at all to plan.

The San Jose Earthquakes’ winless run has extended to seven games, after they lost the Cali Clasico against the LA Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday at PayPal Park.

 257.
While the margin of defeat was smaller than the Quakes’ last match, that comes as scant consolation for a team that did score late, but after the game was already decided.

 258.
Matias Almeyda opted for a three-man midfield in this game, with Eric Remedi returning to the XI alongside both Judson and Jackson Yueill. Shea Salinas also got the start, at left back.

 259.
The game didn’t start well for the Earthquakes, with Chicharito opening the scoring for LA just 11 minutes in, the tricky forward beating the defender to tip in a cross.

 265.

 266.
It was fairly even for the rest of the first half, but the Quakes’ attack still sputtered, as they failed to register a shot on target through 45 minutes, so they were in a unfortunately similar position at halftime, down 1-0.

 267.
The only notable highlight for the Earthquakes in the first half was Almeyda kicking the ball towards play during a stoppage in play and getting a yellow card for his troubles.

 273.

 274.
San Jose had a great look in the 49th minute off a set piece, but Chris Wondolowski at the far post could only cushion the bouncing ball off his chest before he ran out of room. Moments later, Chofís Lopez had a sharp shot that beat LA goalkeeper Jonathan Bond that clanged off the post.

 275.
Those misses were costly, because the Galaxy went right down to the other end and Chicharito scored his second goal of the night.

 276.

 282.
Almeyda went to his bench early in the 2nd half, bringing in Cade Cowell for Judson to try and get the attack jumpstarted.

 283.
It didn’t work, as the Galaxy got another goal in the 70th minute with Florian Jungwirth misplaying the ball and it bounced right into the net.

 297.
Andy Rios replaced Jungwirth and Benji Kikanovic entered for Paul Marie, both in the 85th minute.

 298.
Needless to say, it was a bad night. The Quakes are getting worse and the wheels are now falling off defensively in addition to the attacking problems. We saw them make an improbable comeback last year, but can we count on that happening this year? Seems like this slump may be even more concerning considering how many games there are left to go this season.

 299.
San Jose will be back in action next Saturday, when they will face Minnesota United FC on the road, for the teams’ first meeting since the MLS is Back Tournament quarterfinals last year. The Loons have tended to have the Quakes’ number, so we’ll see if some time apart will improve their prospects.
