  1111.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Artificial Intelligence (AI) has provided daily news headlines over the last six months, sparking curiosity but also uncertainty, even anxiety.</span></p>
  1112.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">There is hype, but also hope. </span></p>
  1113.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">It is a key professional issue touching on every aspect of the work of the library and information science community, with relevance to the critical appraisal of content validity, data quality and management, ethics, intellectual property, plagiarism and legal compliance.</span></p>
  1114.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">This three-hour workshop seeks to inform delegates about the nature of AI and to get to grips with how to use it responsibly.</span></p>
  1115.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">We have had exposure to forms of AI for many years using functions like predictive text, autocorrection, grammar checking, personalised recommendation, search ranking, captioning, automated transcription and translation.</span></p>
  1116.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Many database vendors are incorporating AI into their products. The library and information community has relevant experience through the support of text and data mining, of data science and digital humanities, the promotion of data literacy, and in the use of learning and library analytics. These are only the beginning of exciting developments that may well impact information work profoundly in areas like knowledge discovery through to analysing, even predicting, user behaviour. Information professionals may have roles in evaluating systems and products using AI, generating metadata and training users to navigate AI based search systems, and acquire data/AI literacy.</span></p>
  1117.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">This workshop is an introduction to AI designed specifically for library, information and knowledge professionals to enable them to get up to speed on this critical topic. As well as introducing the applications of AI in an accessible way, part of the course is designed to give delegates an insight into what is involved ‘under the hood’ of AI applications. We aim to provide you with theoretical and practical experience of working with some AI tools.</span></p>

  1219.                                <p>Andrew Cox is a senior lecturer at the Information School, University of Sheffield, and author of his independently researched report - ‘The Impact of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics on the information profession’
  1220.                                    - published by CILIP in 2020. It called for a ‘joined-up and coherent response from information professionals, enabling us to maximise the benefits of AI, machine learning, automation and robotics for information users
  1221.                                    while mitigating the emerging risks.’</p>
  1222.                                <p>He is convenor of the IFLA special interest group on AI and the chair elect of the ASIS&amp;amp;T SIG on AI.</p>

  1224.                                <p>Suvodeep Mazumdar is a Lecturer in the Information School at the University of Sheffield. His primary research interest is Big Data Analytics and Crowdsourcing. He conducts inter-disciplinary research on highly engaging,

  1373.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Data Visualisation - the representation, interpretation and understanding of data through graphics - offers invaluable opportunities to transform your datasets and communicate complex research outputs and quantitative information to a much wider audience. It can surface insightful and compelling context and enables you to explore data relationships not immediately apparent using traditional statistical methods and analysis.</span></p>
  1374.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">It is crucial to understand the opportunities open access tools can offer in visualising data. The library, information and knowledge sector is data-rich, regularly collating statistics to evidence service value and impact and advise decision makers. This data may take the form of library usage and stock circulation statistics, utilisation of digital content, satisfaction surveys and user experience studies, for example. Open data science and linked data are an integral part of Open Science and Open Access, and Artificial Intelligence is built on data literacy, management, validity and integrity. </span></p>
  1375.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">This workshop will introduce and explore data visualisation theory and applications with advice and tips throughout. </span></p>
  1376.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel, for example) still has value as a default data application of choice. The workshop will review its benefits before introducing delegates to a portfolio of open source and free data visualisation alternatives. </span></p>
  1377.                            <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">A key practical element of the workshop will include hands on experience of setting up and working with the visual analytics platform Tableau using your own data. This will include cleaning and organising data, creating basic charts, plots and word clouds and integrating your outputs into a dashboard. </span></p>
