17. <dc:content>
Throughout the history of TV, much of the public has been fortunate enough to indulge in some incredible animated series (including Saturday morning fare we don’t even talk about anymore). Many might primarily cater to kids, but a lot of them also appeal to those who are a bit older. Despite the abundance of quality programming, not many of them are truly perfect. That’s right, even the greatest toons have their flaws. With that in mind, we’re going to discuss some of the best classic children’s cartoons and list the best and worst things about them. So let’s not waste any more time and jump right into this.

  18.

  19.
The Flintstones (1960-1966)

  20.
Best Thing: The Mix Of The Prehistoric Setting And Modern Sensibilities - While set in the Stone Age, The Flintstones flawlessly makes the time period feel tangible and relatable, which is a reason why it’s one of the greatest animated TV shows of all time.

Worst Thing: Overuse Of "Rock" Puns - The rock jokes (commonly employed via names, items, etc.) on the show are definitely cheeky to a point but, in some ways, they get a little played out.

  21.

  22.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! (1960-1970)

  23.
Best Thing: Mystery Inc.’s Chemistry - There are plenty of reasons why Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is beloved and launched a massive media franchise. But what truly makes the classic toon endearing is the interplay between the likable meddling kids and their talking dog.

Worst Thing: Lack Of True Scares - Yes, the show is mostly meant to be a comedy, but a few true jump scares (fit for younger viewers) would be great.

  24.

  25.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998)

  26.
Best Thing: Classic, Yet Modern, Storytelling Sensibilities - This superhero show manages to capture the classic comic-booky sensibilities of Spidey stories but seamlessly combines that with contemporary serialized (‘90s-era) storytelling.

Worst Thing: Peter Parker Couldn’t Throw A Direct Punch At A Living Foe - Peter Parker can kick and punch unfeeling beings and entities all day on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but flesh and blood beings are typically just hit with web shooters and other projectiles.

  27.

  28.
Ed, Edd N' Eddy (1999-2009)

  29.
Best Thing: The Eds’ Creative Schemes - The titular trio on the Cartoon Network classic are mischief makers but also craft a creek cruise, an elaborate miniature golf course, a roller coaster, a corporate office (with a working elevator) and more enterprises.

Worst Thing: Squiggly-Line Animation Style - As fun as this coming-of-age comedy is, the line-heavy animation can be rough on the eyes at times, especially when it comes to earlier episodes.

  30.

  31.
Dragon Ball Z (1989-1996)

  32.
Best Thing: Intense Battles - Dragon Ball Z contains some of the best hand-to-hand fights ever animated like Gohan and Cell’s skirmish and, of course, Goku and Frieza’s brawl.

Worst Thing: Too Many Filler Episodes - As exciting as the anime is, there are plenty of installments with no major narrative developments, only characters charging up their power levels.

  33.

The New Batman Adventures (1997-1999)

  35.
Best Thing: “Mad Love” Episode - The New Batman Adventures – one of the Dark Knight’s shorter-lived shows – succeeds in flawlessly adapting Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s origin story for Harley Quinn.

Worst Thing: The Joker’s DCAU Redesign - Many of the updated character designs are great, but Joker’s beady-eyed look is definitely a head-scratcher.

  36.

  37.
Doug (1991-1999)

  38.
Best Thing: Doug’s Relatable Situations - The predicaments that the eponymous character finds himself in greatly represent the highs and lows of adolescence.

Worst Thing: Doug’s Overwhelming Anxiety - As easy as it is to identify with Doug, his worrisome nature sometimes becomes a little unbearable – even by preteen standards.

  39.

  40.
The Jetsons (1962-1987)

  41.
Best Thing: Great Early Version Of Retro-Futurism - Just as The Flintstones paints a portrait of the past, The Jetsons shows off an over-the-top but oddly tangible picture of progress, which has shaped our views of the distinct view of the distant future.

Worst Thing: Laugh Track - When it comes to multi-camera sitcoms, laugh tracks can be quite invaluable but, on an animated show like this one, it just feels unnecessary.

  42.

  43.
Dexter’s Laboratory (1996-2003)

  44.
Best Thing: Dexter’s Various Inventions - Dexter isn’t called a boy genius for nothing, as viewers see him create a dream machine, a giant robot for combat, a reverse belt, and much more.

Worst Thing: Dee Dee’s Characterization - The annoying (and sometimes dimwitted) sister archetype is one we know well but, at times, Dexter’s Laboratory’s use of it stunts Dee Dee’s growth as a character.

  45.

  46.
Tiny Toon Adventures (1990-1992)

  47.
Best Thing: Interactions Between The New And OG Characters - Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, Plucky Duck, Hampton J. Pig, and co. are fun on their own, but it’s really sweet seeing them mix it up with Bugs, Daffy, Porky, Sylvester, and other Looney Tunes veterans.

Worst Thing: Montana Max - It’s obvious that Montana Max is meant to be a counterpart for Yosemite Sam but, unlike Sam, Montana comes off as more of a pure nuisance than a funny foil.

  48.

  49.
Aladdin (1994-1995)

  50.
Best Thing: Worldbuilding - Aladdin does a great job of adding new characters (heroes and villains), locations, and lore to the fictional world established in one of the best Disney Renaissance movies.

Worst Thing: Recycled Animation Sequences - I understand that a number of animated shows in the ‘80s and ‘90s were on tight budgets, but some of the reused scenes from other entities here look cheap.

  51.

  52.
Hey Arnold! (1996-2004)

  53.
Best Thing: Ensemble-Centric Storytelling - Arnold may headline this sweet series, but the writers share the love by crafting stories around Helga, Gerald, Harold, and other supporting players that provide character development.

Worst Thing: Actor Recastings For Arnold - Each of the three actors (five if you include the pilot and Jungle Movie) who plays Arnold brings their own unique style but, when rewatching the show, the vocal shifts are a bit jarring.

  54.

  55.
Gargoyles (1994-1997)

  56.
Best Thing: Character development - The amount of character growth present throughout Gargoyles is staggering, from the evolution of the main heroes to that of antagonist David Xanatos.

Worst Thing: The third season - Season 3 is very lackluster compared to its predecessors and is disappointing – even if every episode aside from the premiere isn’t considered canon by producer Greg Weisman.

  57.

  58.
Looney Tunes (1920s-1960s)

  59.
Best Thing: Bugs Bunny’s Various Shorts - You’d be hard-pressed to find a Bugs Bunny short that isn’t entertaining on some level, and the classic toon is perfectly voiced by Mel Blanc.

Worst Thing: The “Censored Eleven” - This now-banned set of cartoons sadly depicts racist stereotypes and unfortunately serves as a stain on the history of this illustrious franchise.

  60.

  61.
Beast Wars: Transformers (1996-1999)

  62.
Best Thing: Animal-Themed Transformers concepts - I mean, if you’re a kid and lover of this franchise, how can you not dig the notion of Transformers like Optimus Primal, Cheetor, and Airazor? (2023’s Rise of the Beasts introduced them on the big screen, much to Beast Wars fans’ intrigue.)

Worst Thing: The CGI - Computer-animated TV shows were a novelty in the ‘90s, and Beast Wars exemplifies how the tech still needed time to develop for a weekly series.

  63.

  64.
Animaniacs (1993-1998)

  65.
Best Thing: Sharp, Meta, and Pop-Culture-Infused Writing - Animaniacs had few equals during its run and, even now, its wit and satirical view of popular culture (including the educational songs) are still top-tier.

Worst Thing: The Mindy And Buttons Segments - The various segments on the show are legendary, but the portions featuring the curious Mindy and her long-suffering dog, Buttons, feel particularly thin and repetitive.

  66.

  67.
Johnny Bravo (1997-2004)

  68.
Best Thing: Adult humor - Thanks to (then-rising) writer Seth MacFarlane and others, Johnny Bravo includes a level of comedy that satiates the young but also widely caters to older viewers in the best way.

Worst Thing: Animation Style For Seasons 2 and 3 - The show’s look in these two seasons marks an attempt to jazz up the designs from Season 1 but doesn’t quite land. That’s likely why Season 4 transitions back to more familiar looks for the characters and world.

  69.

  71.
Best Thing: Camaraderie Amongst The Turtles - So much about TMNT works and makes it one of the Saturday morning cartoons that holds up, but the reason many fans arguably keep coming back is because they love the bond between the four reptilian brothers.

Worst Thing: The Interpretation Of Baxter Stockman - The original Mirage Comics establish Dr. Baxter Stockman as a darker and relatively maniacal figure, so it’s disappointing that the ‘80s show makes him into something of a joke.

  74.
Best Thing: Terrifying Monsters Added To The Canon - Gozer and Vigo the Carpathian are solid threats in the films, but they don’t hold a candle to the likes of The Bogeyman, Samhain and The Dark Rider of The Real Ghostbusters.

Worst Thing: Q5 Consulting Firm’s Impact On Season 3 Onwards - ABC enlisted the services of Q5 Corp to make the show (which we don’t talk about much now) more accessible and, in the process, it became duller and sillier.

  77.
Best Thing: Balance Between Comedy And Adventure - Kim Possible succeeds at offering thrills and laughs, and neither one of them ever drowns out the other in a given episode.

Worst Thing: Ron Stoppable’s Qualifications As A Crimefighter - Ron is an important and beloved part of the impactful Disney Channel show, but his lack of skills in the field begs an explanation as to why he was approved for his crime-fighting gig in the first place.

  86.
Best Thing: The Heart – Disney’s Recess wears its heart on its sleeve, and that’s especially necessary when you have episodes like “The Great Can Drive” and “Yes, Mikey, Santa Does Shave.”

Worst Thing: Randall J. Weems - You’ll never find a bigger snitch on a cartoon than Randall, whose weasley tendency for tattling on others undermines the efforts of T.J. Detweiler and co. on various occasions.

  89.
Best Thing: Encapsulates The Adventurous Spirit Of The ‘60s - Hanna-Barbera’s Jonny Quest takes all of the best parts of the greatest action fare of the ‘60s to make a great Saturday morning cartoon.

Worst Thing: Characterization Of Hadji Singh - As lovable as Hadji is, the franchise’s inaugural series doesn’t flesh him out enough, making Quest’s adopted brother feel like a cliché.

  92.
Best Thing: Scary Stories - The writers of Courage the Cowardly Dog deserve a lot of credit for giving kids true chills and not pulling punches in the process. (I still think about needing to return the slab.)

Worst Thing: Elements That Were Too Surreal - Abstract art is definitely appreciated, but it can sometimes be confusing, especially if you're one of the show's younger viewers.

  95.
Best Thing: A Fresh Concept - The idea of two former military men (or “katz”) suiting up as vigilantes and using technology to defend their home may not sound too unorthodox, but it’s truly novel.

Worst Thing: The Two Leads Could Be More Developed - Razor and T-Bone are fun characters but, at times, it feels like their characterizations could be more nuanced in some respects.

  96.

  98.
Best Thing: Learning Is Fun - Only a great show could make learning science fun, and Ms. Frizzle’s journeys into space, the human body, and the Mesozoic Era are as insightful as they are enjoyable.

Worst Thing: Kids Were Always In Mortal Danger - The only downside to all of the aforementioned adventures is that Frizzle’s young class is constantly in serious danger.

  99.

  100.
Rugrats (1991-2004)

  101.
Best Thing: Narrative Structures That Appeal To Different Generations - Rugrats is one of the quintessential daydreaming shows, and the writers employ movie genres, childhood tropes, and more to portray the babies’ adventures.

Worst Thing: Inattentive Parents - Most probably know this by now but the babies’ parents are incredibly irresponsible when watching them and should be grateful the kids usually return to them unscathed by the end of each episode.

  104.
Best Thing: Popeye Gains Strength From Spinach - It’s very on the nose, but few moments in TV are as satisfying as when the sailor opens up a can of spinach, bulks up, and takes down Bluto.

Worst Thing: Olive Oyl’s Lack Of Agency - There are damsels in distress, and then there’s Olive Oyl, who’s just as totally helpless as she is sweet.

  105.

  106.
The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005)

  107.
Best Thing: Great Rogues’ Gallery - The Powerpuff Girls have one of the best and most diverse rosters of villains ever created, from Mojo Jojo and Princess Morbucks to Sedusa and the Gang Green Gang.

Worst Thing: Binary Personality Traits For The Girls - Yes, the girls are all great and worthy of being loved, but each rarely portrays more than their respective “leader,” “sweetheart” and “hothead” molds.

  108.

  109.
Arthur (1996-2022)

  110.
Best Thing: Power Of Community - One of the key strengths of PBS Kids’ Arthur is that it emphasizes the importance of being a good neighbor, and just about everyone in Elwood City shows traces of that quality at times.

Worst Thing: Underutilized Characters - With such a massive ensemble, some characters – like Jenna Morgan or Sue Ellen – don’t get enough time in the sun.

  113.
Best Thing: Voice acting – Hanna-Barbera was well known for having quality voice-acting, but the work that Daws Butler (Yogi), and Don Messick (Boo-Boo) do on The Yogi Bear Show is still top-notch.

Worst Thing: Stealing Food - This is very obvious and key to the lead characters, but I mean, they used to steal tasty vittles from people’s picnic baskets!

  114.
To be clear, the classic children’s cartoons we’ve discussed are all definitely worth checking out. You should just be aware that each of them has their own share of strengths and weaknesses.

  319. <dc:content>
Throughout the history of television, avid viewers have been blessed with a plethora of excellent sitcoms, from the Norman Lear-produced All in the Family and The Jeffersons to the James Burrows-directed Cheers and Friends. Some shows have greater longevity than others, though, as certain ones get canceled after only a few seasons for one reason or another. You may not believe it, but there are a number of funny and very well-known series that didn’t get 100 episodes under their belts before they concluded. On that note, let’s discuss some really famous situation comedies that were unable to hit that milestone.

  320.

  321.
Saved By The Bell (86 Episodes)

  322.
It would be an understatement to say Saved by the Bell is one of the most recognizable school-set sitcoms of all time. It was a ratings powerhouse, spawned spinoffs and revival (which was a must-watch for fans of the OG show) and remains a popular streaming show to this day. And to think, the adventures of Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, Screech Powers and the rest of the Bayside High gang only spanned four seasons.

  323.

  324.
Gilligan’s Island (98 Episodes)

  325.
“Just sit right back, and you’ll hear a tale..." The tale of a major show. It just came short of 100 episodes before it had to go. In all seriousness though, it may be hard to believe Gilligan’s Island didn’t hit the mark. Nevertheless, the titular character and his fellow castaways left a mark on pop culture and would later return in some TV movies.

  326.

  327.
Archie Bunker’s Place (97 Episodes)

  328.
After the acclaimed All in the Family ended its nine-season run in 1979, CBS immediately produced another spinoff series, Archie Bunker’s Place. It centered on Carol O’Connor’s titular character, as he ran his bar and restaurant in Queens, New York. The show wasn’t as popular as its predecessor but did last four seasons and, during its first, it became TV's top ratings earner, topping this next comedy in the process.

  329.

  330.
Mork & Mindy (95 Episodes)

  331.
When it comes to Happy Days’ various spinoffs, Mork & Mindy is easily one of the most recognizable next to Laverne & Shirley. The sci-fi romp’s four seasons are filled with memorable characters and moments. However, it’s arguably most famous for launching the career of Robin Williams, who went on to play a number of unforgettable roles.

  332.

  333.
The Honeymooners (39 Episodes)

  334.
Jackie Gleason’s The Honeymooners – one of the first sitcoms to focus on working-class married couples – is a key piece of Americana. What’s impressive is that the comedy, which debuted in 1955, only ran for one season composed of 39 episodes, with Gleason ending it in ‘56 due to high production costs. Though its run was short, you’d be hard pressed to find a TV fan who doesn’t know the line, “To the moon, Alice!”

  335.

  336.
The Addams Family (64 Episodes)

  337.
They’re creepy, and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky – and their show didn’t even hit 70 episodes. Based on the comic book strip, The Addams Family didn’t get a long run on ABC, but it remains a beloved property. And its legacy lives on, because fans still stream the various Addams-related movies and shows, including the hit Netflix offshoot, Wednesday.

  339.
The Munsters (70 Episodes)

  340.
CBS also got in on the macabre family sitcom game in 1964, when it dropped The Munsters. Herman Munster and his monstrous brood may not be quite as famous as the Addams, but they are still beloved despite their show not getting to the hundredth-installment benchmark. Plus, the property eventually spawned revivals and reimaginings, like Rob Zombie’s Netflix movie, which will leave you with plenty of thoughts.

  342.
Welcome Back, Kotter (95 Episodes)

  343.
When it comes to school-centric sitcoms, few can match the sheer charm and warmth of ABC’s Welcome Back, Kotter. The Gabe Kaplan-led series, which featured endearing characters and plenty of shenanigans, enjoyed success for much of its 1975 to 1979 run. It also served as a professional launchpad for one of its young cast members – John Travolta, who has a number of movies under his belt now.

  344.

  345.
What’s Happening!! (65 Episodes)

  346.
Another teen-centric show that aired on the alphabet network alongside Kotter was What’s Happening!!, which centered on Roger “Raj” Thomas as well as his family and friends. While it only aired 65 episodes across three seasons, it was a moderate success amongst younger viewers by the time it ended in 1979.

  347.

  348.
Punky Brewster (88 Episodes)

  349.
Many comedies manage to endear themselves to audiences through adorable characters, and Punky Brewster did just that with Soleil Moon Frye’s titular protagonist. The show never did garner high ratings while it aired on NBC and in syndication, though it did cultivate a loyal following and even generated a short-lived 2021 revival starring Frye.

  350.

  351.
WKRP In Cincinnati (90 Episodes)

  352.
Years before Frasier Crane ever took to the airwaves, WKRP in Cincinnati provided a humorous look into the inner workings of a radio station. The show entertained with lovable characters like the late Howard Hesseman’s Dr. Johnny Fever, but it couldn’t find a steady audience due to constantly getting shifted around CBS’ schedule. After it ended in 1982 with 90 stories under its belt, it found great success in syndication and received a revival in 1991.

  353.

  354.
NewsRadio (97 Episodes)

  355.
Not to take another swipe at Frasier, but its five-season NBC cohort, NewsRadio, deserves its flowers as well. Though widely praised by critics, the workplace comedy didn’t make a serious dent in the ratings. Still, the show holds a special place in folks’ hearts, in part because it produced the final major TV role of the late, great Phil Hartman.

  356.

  357.
The New Adventures Of Old Christine (88 Episodes)

  358.
After Julia Louis-Dreyfus made TV history with Seinfeld and before she did that again via Veep, she starred on CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine. The show aired five seasons from 2006 to 2010, and Louis-Dreyfus’ performance as the eponymous divorced mother earned her a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress. The show may not have lasted as long as some of its counterparts, but it has enjoyed success in syndication.

  359.

  360.
Bosom Buddies (37 Episodes)

  361.
Before Tom Hanks headlined impeccable films, he starred alongside the late Peter Scolari on the short-lived, but beloved, situation comedy Bosom Buddies. The show focused on the actors’ two characters, who posed as women to maintain residence in a single-sex apartment. While it only aired 37 episodes during its two seasons, it’s still remembered (greatly due to Hanks’ involvement).

The fantastical comedy only aired for three seasons on ABC from 1967 to 1970, but it remains a TV touchstone. Susan Harris’ quirky idea proved to be right on the money, though, as the alphabet network offering would tape 95 shows by the time it wrapped its four seasons in 1981. Unfortunately, it faced a serious tragedy when its lead actor, John Ritter, suddenly died in 2003. The show – which aired two more seasons through 2005 – is still remembered for being one of Ritter’s last shows and for jumpstarting the career of Kaley Cuoco, who still keeps her late co-star’s memory alive.

Eddie Murphy co-created and starred in the comedy, which sought to paint a humorous picture of life in an urban housing project. In only 14 episodes, which is a respectable run for a British show, it introduced lovable characters (and Gervais’ David Brent) and helped set a new standard for comedy. And of course, it also inspired a U.S.-based counterpart starring Steve Carrell that arguably made the mockumentary approach more popular in the states.

The NBC series My Name is Earl was an unconventional kind of show, but it brought in solid viewership. Unfortunately, it was surprisingly canceled after four seasons and 96 episodes in 2009 – and featured a major cliffhanger.

While all of the TV shows we’ve discussed may not have been on the air as long as other hit comedies, that doesn’t extinguish their impact in any way. 432. <dc:content>
As of late, Disney has been involved in a situation involving a major cable provider. The House of Mouse found itself engaged in a carrier dispute with Charter Communications – the operator the Spectrum TV. Said dispute led to about 15 million customers being left without ESPN, Disney Channel and other networks owned by the entertainment conglomerate. Amid the situation Disney also shared a blistering take on the disagreement. Now, the business squabble has been resolved and, in the aftermath, Bob Iger released a statement that was far less harsh.

News of the updated deal between the companies was reported on Monday, and both sides are apparently satisfied with the manner in which the proceedings shook out. At least, that’s the feeling one gets by what was said by the heads of the companies. Disney CEO Bob Iger released a joint statement with Charter’s head honcho, Chris Winfrey. The two execs discussed their shared desire to have an “innovative” approach to their business dealings moving forward. They also touched on what this agreement represents in their eyes:

  433.

Our collective goal has always been to build an innovative model for the future. This deal recognizes both the continued value of linear television and the growing popularity of streaming services while addressing the evolving needs of our consumers. We also want to thank our mutual customers for their patience this past week and are pleased that Spectrum viewers once again have access to Disney’s high-quality sports, news and entertainment programming, in time for Monday Night Football.

  434.
This statement, which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter, is vastly different in tone from what’s been said by both companies as of late. Spectrum accused Disney of ignoring its proposals for new deals while simultaneously only seeking to raise costs for carrying its content. As mentioned by the trade, one of the most significant points of contention revolving around Charter Communications wanting more flexibility when it comes to the channels it offers customers. Additionally, it also wanted permission to offer the entertainment titan’s streaming services.

Charter may now find itself in a prime position to attract prospective (or even existing) Disney+ subscribers. A “wholesale agreement” now allows select Spectrum TV customers to have access to the ad-based tier of the flagship streaming platform. Those who partake in the carrier’s Select TV Plus service can also gain access to ESPN+. So Monday Night Football fans should be pleased, for the most part. However, several networks -- like FreeForm and FXX -- are no longer available to those customers because of the revised charter, according to TVLine.

Before both sides signed on the dotted line though, the two corporations shared some blunt thoughts on the state of affairs. Disney, in particular, didn’t hold back. The corporate entity expressed interest in resuming talks with Spectrum amid the dispute. But simultaneously, it told consumers that “they have many options today and can choose from competing pay TV providers that offer Disney’s entire portfolio of networks and programming.” It also accused Charter of making this past Labor Day weekend “stressful” for viewers due to the standstill. In a subsequent message, the House of Mouse further recommended that those wishing to have their content direct themselves to Hulu + Live TV, per Fox Business. All in all, it goes without saying that this message is a lot softer than those previous ones.

This is just one of the business matters Bob Iger has had to contend with since he returned to The Walt Disney Company in November 2022 and began making big changes. He’s also overseen the brand’s lawsuit against Florida governor Ron DeSantis and had to contend with a string of box office disappointments. All of that aside though, Iger and his colleagues can at least, breathe a sigh of relief over the fact that the company’s relationship with Charter and Spectrum has been smoothed over.

  451. <dc:content>
Ed Asner, the veteran actor known for his extensive work, including his roles on Lou Grant and The Mary Tyler Moore Show has passed away. Asner’s family confirmed that he passed away Sunday morning. The TV legend was 91 at the time of his passing.

  452.
The Asner family did not confirm a cause of death when they confirmed their patriarch’s passing via Twitter. However, his passing is sure to come as a surprise to many, considering that the actor was still incredibly spry and lively. His family paid tribute to him with this brief statement:

  453.

We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you.

  454.
Very few actors have been privileged enough to have a career as extensive as Ed Asner’s. Then again, not too many actors have the distinct skills and on-screen presence the actor possessed. For years, Anser entered avid TV viewers’ homes via their TV and delighted them with his witty, tough guy persona, which only masked his soft side.

  455.
Ed Asner was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 15 to immigrant parents. After graduating from college, the young Asner would serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. During his service, he would star in plays that toured army camps across Europe and, after his military tenure was finished, he truly caught the acting bug and joined Playwrights Theatre Company in Chicago before heading to New York.

  456.
After a stint on Broadway in the early ‘60s, Ed Asner began to pick up roles in both movies and TV shows. But it would ultimately be the latter that would allow him to make his mark on pop culture. After working through the ‘60s, Asner landed a role alongside Mary Tyler Moore in CBS’ The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970. Asner played Lou Grant, a veteran journalist, who served as the news director of the fictional WJM-TV in Minneapolis. Grant usually served as the straight man to Moore’s Mary Richard’s and her TV co-workers but would show that he cared for his colleagues on many occasions.

  457.
Ed Asner earned critical acclaim for his role as Grant and earned three Emmy awards for his performance during the show’s seven-season run. The character actually proved to be so popular that after TMTMS ended its run in 1977, Asner was tapped to headline the spinoff series Lou Grant. While its predecessor was a half-hour sitcom, Lou Grant was an hour-long drama that tackled the issues of the day. Asner would achieve even more recognition, with an additional two Emmy wins. With these wins, he’s only one of two actors (the other being Uzo Aduba) to win comedy and drama Emmys for playing the same character.

  458.
In the years following his time as Lou Grant, Ed Asner continued to work consistently. During the later years in which he played Grant, he starred in the short-lived series Rich Man, Poor Man and the acclaimed miniseries Roots, both of which earned him Emmy wins. Throughout the next few decades, he also guest starred in various shows like Mad About You, The X-Files and even Netflix's Cobra Kai. Not unlike Star Wars' Mark Hamill, he also made a name for himself as a voice actor, having lent his vocals to shows like Superman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man, Gargoyles and King of the Hill.

  459.
Voice acting would also give him one of his most beloved roles in the form of Carl Fredricksen, the cranky but lovable widower in Pixar’s Up. On the big screen, Ed Asner would also play roles in films like The Bachelor and Elf.

  460.
Ed Asner’s impact on screen (and off screen as the president of the Screen Actors Guild) cannot be overstated. He leaves an indelible mark on the history of entertainment and, while we’ll surely miss him, we can be grateful that we had his talents for so long.

  461.
We here at CinemaBlend extend our deepest thoughts and condolences to the family and loved ones of Ed Asner at this time.

  462.
More to come...
