The <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023</a> is being hosted by India, started on 5 October and scheduled to finish on 19 November 2023.
Cricket World Cup 2023 will take place in <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/know-all-about-icc-mens-cricket-world-cup-2023-venues/">ten different stadiums</a>. The first and second semi-finals will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and Eden Gardens in Kolkata respectively, while the final will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Ten team participating in the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/">Cricket World Cup</a> are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. In the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">Cricket World Cup 2023</a> all 10 teams will face one another.

The International Cricket Council (<a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/international-cricket-council/">ICC</a>) and <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/unicef/">UNICEF</a> in partnership with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (<a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/bcci/">BCCI</a>) and <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/sri-lanka-cricket/">Sri Lanka Cricket</a> (SLC) will bring the game’s one billion fans together to celebrate One Day 4 Children on 2 November with a message of hope and support for every child to survive and thrive.
The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will turn blue in what will be the pinnacle of an event-wide #BeAChampion campaign that is focused on using the global reach of the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023</a> to help build a better world for every child and help create equal opportunities for girls and boys in every sphere.
The sell-out fixture will see fans attending provided an LED wristband that will be synced with a stadium-wide blue light show during the second innings. Players from India and Sri Lanka will support the amplification of the One Day 4 Children message alongside other legends of the game, including UNICEF and ICC Ambassadors Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan.
The contributions raised throughout the campaign will support UNICEF’s work for children, aimed at ensuring every child gets an equal opportunity.
ICC and Global Broadcast Partner Star Sports will ensure the One Day 4 Children experience reaches television audiences around the globe, while various ICC Commercial Partners are supporting the event with in-match donations.
The One Day 4 Children fixture is part of a broader ICC Cricket 4 Good strategy and follows the launch of Criiio 4 Good, a new online, life skills learning initiative developed by the ICC, UNICEF and BCCI aimed at promoting gender equity among girls and boys. The eight learning modules are available free of charge at criiio.com/criiio4good, with the Indian Ministry of Education set to promote the program to over 1.5m schools.
In addition, the ICC, UNICEF and all 10 teams at the Cricket World Cup are hosting clinics in each host city, where hundreds of children from UNICEF programs are being given the chance to pick up a bat and ball alongside their heroes.
Fans wanting to contribute to UNICEF in support of children can visit help.unicef.org, with donations starting from as little as US$2.
UNICEF Regional Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar participating in One Day 4 Children, “Serving a cause greater than the game itself is a privilege. As Regional Ambassador for UNICEF South Asia, it’s been my privilege to bat for children and their rights. Every international cricketer, including myself, started as a child with a dream. I look forward to joining hands with UNICEF to see my home ground at the Wankhede Stadium turn blue as we champion equality for children across the world.”
ICC Ambassador Muttiah Muralitharan said, “I’m proud to support the ICC and UNICEF in promoting the One Day 4 Children match at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. I’m looking forward to catching up with my long time friend Sachin Tendulkar to turn the Wankhede Stadium blue for what will be a crucial fixture for the Sri Lankan team against the hosts. I hope everyone across the game can join us to be part of this special game and help improve the lives of children.”

The <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/international-cricket-council/">International Cricket Council</a> (ICC) today revealed the latest winners of the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/icc-mens-player-of-the-month/">ICC Player of the Month</a> awards from a host of stellar international performances during September 2023.
India’s talented young batter <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/shubman-gill/">Shubman Gill</a> wins the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September after run-scoring feats in his country’s trophy-winning <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/asia-cup/">Asia Cup</a> campaign and the subsequent ODI series against Australia, while Sri Lankan icon <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/chamari-athapaththu/">Chamari Athapaththu</a> claims the ICC Women’s Player of the Month crown after her T20I batting and bowling exploits last month delivered her side’s maiden series win on English soil.
<a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/icc-mens-player-of-the-month/">ICC Men’s Player of the Month</a>, Gill has enjoyed a whirlwind run of form in 2023 which has seen him surge up the ICC Men’s ODI batting rankings, and now lies within touching distance of the August Player of the Month winner, Pakistan’s Babar Azam.
Runs flooded in for the 24-year-old in ODI cricket in September. He started the month with half-centuries against Nepal and Pakistan before passing three figures in stylish fashion against Bangladesh in Colombo en-route to the final. Chasing down 51 to win the low-scoring finale, Gill remained at the crease to see his side over the line.
Following the conclusion of the Asia Cup, Gill once again shone in the subsequent series against Australia, bagging 74 runs in Mohali and 104 in Indore at more than a run-a-ball.
His 480 runs during the calendar month came at an average of 80, and a strike rate of 99.37.
Reacting to his award win, Gill said, “I am delighted to have won the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of September. It’s a great privilege to represent India at the international level and contribute towards the team’s cause. This award will further motivate me to continue to seek excellence and make the country proud.”
“I managed to make a handy contribution towards the team which had the fortune of winning the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/asia-cup/asia-cup-2023/">Asia Cup 2023</a> and then, follow it up with an ODI series win against Australia in September. I take this opportunity to thank all my teammates, family and the coaches, without whom this achievement would not have been possible,” he added.
Gill claims his second Player of the Month prize for 2023 after overcoming compatriot Mohammed Siraj, and England’s Dawid Malan, both of whom displayed outstanding form in shorter formats of the international game ahead of the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023</a>.
<a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/icc-womens-player-of-the-month/">ICC Women’s Player of the Month</a>, Chamari Athapaththu has been a consistent performer on the world stage for Sri Lanka over a number of years, but her performances in September hit new heights, earning her first Player of the Month award, as well as a historic series victory over England in T20Is.
The Sri Lanka skipper led from the front to secure her side’s maiden series victory in any format on English soil in September, overcoming defeat in the first outing to secure a 2-1 win.
After narrowly losing the rain-effected first contest, Athapaththu spearheaded the response in the second fixture in Chelmsford. She opened the bowling and restricted England to 104 thanks to economical figures of one for 11 in three overs. In pursuit of the low target, her trademark explosive batting was on show as she raced to 55 from 31 balls in the eight-wicket win.
Staring down a historic victory, Athapaththu once again delivered. Three wickets for 21 runs limited the hosts to a modest score of 116, before she steered her side across the line in a seven-wicket win with a priceless 44 runs in 28 balls atop the order.
Athapaththu commented, “I am extremely happy to be named ICC Women’s Player of the Month, a recognition I consider not only owned by me, but by our entire team, as without them, I would not have been able to perform to my strengths.”
“This award will definitely be a boost for me, my teammates, and our fans, who have been with the team throughout, giving their fullest support, and also be an encouragement for our young cricketers, thus showing them the path,” she added.
Athapaththu wins the accolade edging out fellow nominees, South African duo Nadine de Klerk and Laura Wolvaardt, who impressed in series against Pakistan and New Zealand.

Cricket is set to make its comeback after 128 years in the Olympics as the organisers of the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/los-angeles-2028-olympics-games/">Los Angeles 2028 Olympics</a> recommended cricket for inclusion at the Games.
Cricket, along with baseball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash are the five sports that have been proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee for inclusion at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in five years.
The LA28 proposal would be reviewed and confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its executive board meeting in Mumbai on October 12-14.
Speaking on this new development, Casey Wasserman, LA28’s Chairperson, said, “LA28’s proposed sports ignite the imagination on the field of play and drive culture off it. They’re relevant, innovative and community-based, played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and the globe. They will bring new athletes to the Games, engage diverse fanbases and expand the Games’ presence in digital spaces, further amplifying LA28’s mission to deliver an unparalleled experience.”
Greg Barclay, ICC Chairman, said, “We are delighted that LA28 have recommended cricket for inclusion in the Olympics. Whilst this is not the final decision, it is a very significant landmark towards seeing cricket at the Olympics for the first time in more than a century.”
“I’d like to thank LA28 for their support during the new sport evaluation process over last two years and we look forward to the final decision being taken at the IOC Session, in India, during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next week,” he added.

The three-person <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/icc-mens-player-of-the-month/">ICC Men’s Player of the Month</a> shortlist features one of England’s prolific short-format batters and an Indian duo that were instrumental in their trophy-winning Asia Cup campaign last month.
Mohammed Siraj enjoyed a return to the top of the ICC Men’s ODI rankings for bowlers in late September and was the chief architect of India’s success in the final with a remarkable bowling display. Joining him on the shortlist is Shubman Gill, hoping to win his second Player of the Month prize after his run-scoring heroics in the Asia Cup continued into the subsequent ODI series against Australia. England’s Dawid Malan completes the lineup, nominated for the first time after a superb showing in the series against New Zealand.
The shortlist for the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/tag/icc-womens-player-of-the-month/">ICC Women’s Player of the Month</a> Award features a young South African duo that recorded an impressive T20I win in Pakistan, and Sri Lanka’s influential skipper, who led them to a historic T20I series victory in England.
Chamari Athapaththu gains her second Player of the Month nomination after her batting and bowling contributions inspired Sri Lanka’s first-ever series win on English soil. Joining her among the contenders for September’s crown is fellow all-rounder, Nadine de Klerk, whose wickets and runs proved vital to South Africa’s ODI successes against Pakistan and New Zealand, and her compatriot Laura Wolvaardt, who again showed glimpses of her batting brilliance with runs in both T20I and ODI formats against the same opposition.

The Indian batter has enjoyed a hugely successful 2023 so far, and could potentially be in line to win his second Player of the Month accolade after runs again came flooding in during September. The 24-year-old registered 480 runs at an average of 80 in his eight ODIs during the month, with notable highlights including a stylish century against Bangladesh in Colombo, and 74 and 104 in back-to-back games against Australia.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dawid Malan (ENG)</h3>
The England batter arrived into the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in sublime form in ODI cricket, scooping the Player of the Series award in the recent victory over New Zealand at home. His scores during the series progressed with each match. After a half-century in the second fixture, he came within a whisker of three figures with 96 at the Oval, before he passed the landmark in the final outing across London at Lord’s. His 277 ODI runs in September came at an average of 92.33.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mohammed Siraj (IND)</h3>
The pacer returned to the summit of the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI bowler rankings in September thanks to a glittering performance to dismantle Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final in Colombo. Siraj took 11 wickets in total across six ODIs, but his month will be remembered for the memorable way in which he tore into the defending champions, bowling them out for 50 runs, taking six wickets for 21 which included a four-wicket over.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chamari Athapaththu (SL)</h3>
Sri Lanka’s iconic skipper was at the peak of her powers in the T20I series against England in September. After narrowly losing the rain-effected first contest, Athapaththu registered back-to-back Player of the Match performances to clinch their maiden victory over the home side in any format. Her trademark explosive batting and economical bowling helped restrict England to low totals in the second and third matches. A terrific 55 runs in 31 balls in the second match was followed by a match-winning 44 in 28 balls in the decisive encounter, along with three priceless England wickets.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Nadine de Klerk (SA)</h3>
The South African all-rounder celebrates her first nomination in the Player of the Month awards after valuable runs and wickets helped claim ODI victories over Pakistan and New Zealand last month. De Klerk chipped in with scores throughout September, only being dismissed once, and scoring 171 runs including successive half-centuries. The Player of the Series against Pakistan also impressed with the ball, recording 13 wickets in her five ODI outings at a superb average of 12.76.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Laura Wolvaardt (SA)</h3>
Despite losing the T20I series 3-0 against Pakistan, Wolvaardt was named Player of the Series after amassing 157 runs in her three matches. A quiet ODI series against Pakistan followed before the South African once again rediscovered her form, this time against New Zealand, striking a classy half-century before an unbeaten 124 saw her side confirm the series win and Wolvaardt claim another Player of the Series prize.

Bangladesh have been fined 5 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against England in a league match of the <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023</a> on Tuesday, 10 October 2023.
Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Shakib Al Hasan’s side was ruled to be 1 over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
Shakib Al Hasan pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

Sri Lanka have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against South Africa in the Match 4 of <a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023</a> on Saturday, 7 October 2023.
Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was ruled to be 2 over(s) short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf leveled the charge.

<a href="https://www.cricketnews.net.in/cricket-world-cup/cricket-world-cup-2023/">ICC Cricket World Cup 2023</a> kicked off with England facing New Zealand in the inaugural match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
Despite no opening ceremony, the hype around the tournament has been massive but the response on the ground was subdued as many chairs remained empty at the world’s biggest cricket stadium.
The Narendra Modi Stadium has a capacity of One lakh thirty-two thousand, making it the largest cricket ground in the world.
Fans were left bemused as England’s Jonny Bairstow faced the opening ball of the World Cup against New Zealand’s Trent Boult in front of a glaringly-small crowd. 
One wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter wrote, “when was the last time a cricket world cup opened with…empty stands?”

Hosts India begin their World Cup campaign in a mouth-watering match against Australia on Sunday – and the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai will no doubt be full.
However, the ICC and BCCI have struggled to shift tickets for any match that does not feature India.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad looks so empty</h2>
Reportedly, the tickets went unsold for the first match and the organisers offered free tickets to roughly 30,000 to 40,000 women from Ahmedabad along with free vouchers for tea and lunch.
Lalit Wadhawan, the BJP vice-president of the Bodakdev neighborhood said to the Indian Express that this drive was inspired by the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.
“Around 30,000 to 40,000 women from Ahmedabad will be watching the game in the stadium tomorrow. Our volunteers have been asked to send the names and the tickets were handed to them today. These women will be reaching the stadium on their own and will be given tea and food coupons,” Wadhawan was quoted as saying.
