VIDEO/PHOTOS: As Florida’s population grows, many fire departments are struggling to keep up – facing both rising call volumes and severe staffing shortages. But a new piece of high-tech equipment could offer a lifeline, not just on emergency calls, but in the race to recruit the next generation of firefighters. The Fort Meade Fire Department is among hundreds across the nation adopting a computerized firetruck system that automates traditional pump operations – once managed manually with more complicated cranks, dials, and levers. The system also includes a ‘smart’ fire hose that communicates directly with the truck to regulate water pressure in real time, speeding up response times and freeing up firefighters to focus on the job at hand.

WTVT-TV FOX 13 Tampa

The post New firetruck technology in Fort Meade aims to boost recruitment amid first responder shortage appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: The Santa Barbara County Fire Department is holding a series of live fire drills this week during the final few days of a training program for a group of firefighter recruits.

On Thursday, recruits were completing a two-day training session at the Public Safety Training Complex on the Allan Hancock College Lompoc Valley Center. The drills in Lompoc followed a one-day training session on Monday at the nearby Burton Mesa Training Center.

All of the training is part of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department’s Firefighter Recruit Academy, a rigorous 20-week course that teaches recruits required firefighting and life-saving skills. The Firefighter Recruit Academy currently has 17 recruits, which are firefighters who have been hired by department, but must complete a required training program in order to officially begin work with the department.

Graduation for the recruits will take place later this month. Following graduation ceremonies, the recruits will begin their new positions on probation status at various stations within the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

KEYT-TV ABC/CBS/MyNetworkTV 3 Santa Barbara

The post Live fire drills preparing soon-to-be Santa Barbara County firefighters for real emergencies appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

A firefighter was struck by a car Friday in Cumberland County while responding to a crash, according to the Cotton Volunteer Fire Department. The original crash was reported around 8 a.m. on U.S. Highway 301 North. Around 8:45 a.m., while emergency responders were at the scene, a passing car struck a vehicle, a fire engine and a firefighter. The car did not slow down to pass the crash scene. In the video, other responders can be seen jumping out of the way as the car hit Waymon Hudson. “Another foot over and I probably wouldn’t be having this conversation,” said Hudson. Hudson said he broke five ribs and faces a 6-to-8 week recovery. “I looked at the car and I remember saying ‘this is going to hurt,'” said Hudson. “I saw the sky, the road and I was laying down on the road looking at everyone looking down on me.”

WRAL-TV NBC 5 Raleigh

The post VIDEO: Firefighter hit by car while responding to Cumberland County crash appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) Urban Search and Rescue (USR) team put its new life-saving equipment to the test this week through a series of rescue simulations. The training simulated a trench rescue.

When someone falls into a hole or trench, the ground in and around the area needs to be stabilized before crews can begin rescue operations.

Crews first build walls inside the hole for stabilization. Then, the new equipment uses air pressure to keep dirt in place when rescuing a victim from a hole or trench.

A crew specializing in rescue techniques travelled to Alaska to give AFD first responders hands-on training.

“We build the shores and then use wedges and things to pressurize it,” said Kevin Jones with Advanced Rescue Solutions, which specializes in complex rescue techniques. “We’re coming up to show them the tips, tricks, tools of the trade to shore these trenches when they get called out to make rescues or recoveries.”

Trench collapses typically occur at construction or work sites, according to USR Team Leader Captain Mike Fish.

He explained that this system allows first responders to get to the person needing rescue more quickly than other techniques.

“I feel our team is going to be so much better now with more knowledge that they’ve brought to us and then our guys getting the hands on as we do throughout the year,” he said. “We always have room to grow and learn.”

The equipment and training were paid for by grant funding.

KTUU-TV NBC 2 Anchorage

The post Anchorage Search and Rescue trains using new life-saving equipment appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: Investigators released the likely cause of the Davis fire nearly eight months after it sparked. They believe the fire started from an improperly extinguished campfire or a warming fire in the area.

The fire began in September of 2024 at Davis Creek Regional Park, just south of Reno, burning more than a dozen homes and buildings.

The fire has been classified as accidental, and no criminal charges are being pursued.

“The Davis Creek Park is in unincorporated Washoe County,” said Adam Mayberry, communications manager for Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue. “It is within Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District jurisdiction.

VIDEO: A Mequon-area family is cleaning up after an unexpected fire spread quickly through their backyard, leveling a barn that dates back 170 years. Robert Groth said he was making his kids an afternoon snack Wednesday afternoon when he noticed the barn was on fire. He and his wife Ashley quickly got their two sons to safety and started spraying water on the home. “It almost looks like a war zone when you stand in the trees there,” Groth said.

Despite the efforts of more than a dozen fire agencies that responded, the barn ended up being a total loss. That includes heavy machinery stored inside, farming supplies and a tractor. Nobody was injured in the fire, but the loss of the barn is nonetheless significant. Groth said the barn was built around 1850. “It sucks that it’s all down, but we can always rebuild,” Groth said. They are dealing with insurance to see about options to rebuild the structure. In the meantime, the family is remaining optimistic. The cause for this fire is not yet clear.

WTMJ-TV NBC 4 Milwaukee

The post Mequon family vows to rebuild 19th century barn destroyed in fire appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: The men and women who put themselves in deadly situations for the safety of all of us were in Bethlehem on Thursday morning to celebrate the passage of a bill that makes accessing mental health care easier. “Basically, firefighters who endured a serious traumatic event, needed behavioral health treatment and to take time off of work to get the treatment,” said Pa. state Rep. Mike Schlossberg, who spoke at the event.

They now have that support thanks to the passing of PA Act 121, the Workers’ Compensation Act, providing compensation for post-traumatic stress injury. First responders were on hand to celebrate its passage. “This is a great thing, it will save lives,” said Robert Brooks, president of the Pennsylvania Firefighters Association and a former Bethlehem firefighter. Brooks believes it will also lessen the stigma of getting mental help after a traumatic incident. But, passing the legislation was not easy.

“It was years in the making, almost a decade to get it done,” said Brooks. “We’ve had to work across the state to bring in legislatures, both Republicans and Democrats. We don’t have a Republican problem or a Democrat problem. We have a firefighter problem. Firefighter issues are our issues and we worked across the state with both sides of the aisle, both chambers.” In the end, it was bipartisan. “It took a mountain to move this. We got it done on the last day; we got it done. It passed unanimously in both chambers, minus one vote, but we were able to get everybody on board, which is hard to do these days,” Brooks said.

WFMZ-TV 69 Allentown

The post New bill provides post-traumatic stress support for Pennsylvania first responders appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: A fire broke out early Thursday morning at a massive school campus in the Portage Park neighborhood, Chicago police said. There was an emergency response around 1:06 a.m. Thursday at Chicago Academy High School/Elementary School in 3400-block of North Austin Avenue in Portage Park, Chicago police said. Chicago firefighters extinguished a fire on the school’s third floor, police said.

The building was not occupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, CPD said. Video shows flames coming from part of the roof and smoke inside the school. “I actually live across the street right there so I saw it live last night at 1 a.m., senior Jordan Rivera said. “It was crazy.” Rivera watched firefighters hurry to put out the flames. “It was scary because there was a perimeter set up around the whole school with cop cars and a bunch of firetrucks,” Rivera said. “We saw the after flames and we didn’t know if it was going to grow or if the school was going to come down. We didn’t know what was going on.”

WLS-TV ABC 7 Chicago

The post Fire breaks out at school in Portage Park, Chicago police say appeared first on Daily Dispatch.
