Along with Justin Herbert, the Chargers have key players who can cause the Browns problems in Week 9

The Cleveland Browns needed a win last Sunday and they got one. Now the team will look to build off of it. This is the last game for the Browns before heading into a much-needed bye and they will square off with AFC West opponent, the Los Angeles Chargers.

Under head coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers have a new feel and vibe to them. Harbaugh, who has experience coaching in the NFL going back to when he was in San Francisco with the 49ers is no stranger to turning teams around. Los Angeles underwent a roster turnover but managed to keep key players while acquiring talent. You can see the Harbaugh influence with how he’s building the Chargers with emphasis on the trenches and the run game (similar formula he used with the 49ers and at Michigan.)

Offensively, the unit is average. QB Justin Herbert is a franchise quarterback and he’s been that since Los Angeles drafted him. It’s the supporting cast that has been an issue. As far as the receiving weapons go, there is some quality. Rookie Ladd McConkey is starting to emerge, Josh Palmer has made some contributions, and tight end Will Dissly has turned into a reliable target. The offensive line has played well but the interior has some concerns.

Defensively, the unit is arguably a top-10 unit in the league. It’s not star-studded but it is sound in terms of their alignments. Defensive coordinator Jessie Minter (who Harbaugh brought over from the Wolverines) will be a future head coach sooner rather than later. Defensive ends Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack aren’t tier-1 edge rushers like they were in their prime but they are still effective.

As far as the secondary goes, there are a few key players that stand out.

CB Kristian Fulton

S Elijah Molden

CB Ja’Sir Taylor

Here are the 3 Chargers players who could cause the Browns a lot of trouble in Week 9:

QB Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles organization has had gotten their fair share of criticism when it comes to specific moves that they made. Drafting Herbert isn’t one of those moves.

Herbert is a top-10 quarterback in this league and he has been carrying the Chargers franchise to a degree since he’s been there. Incompetent offensive coaching staffs as well as below-average weapons hasn’t hindered his ability to make the most out of his situation.

no QB has played better than Justin Herbert over the last three weeks pic.twitter.com/csfOuHziCf
— Steven Ruiz (@theStevenRuiz) October 28, 2024

The one thing with Herbert is how aggressive he is starting to become and how Los Angeles is trusting him a bit more to let it rip.

As far as how the Cleveland defense can limit Herbert, they essentially have to force him to mistakes (which is something he doesn’t do) or keep him off the field. When Herbert is on, he can be dangerous.

WR Ladd McConkey

As far as rookie receivers go, the one that landed in an ideal situation was McConkey in Los Angeles. Going back to his days at the University of Georgia, McConkey was never going to be the 1st option in that offense considering the talent that was there to a degree (injuries play a part as well). McConkey seems to be emerging as a reliable target for Herbert to lean on. The rookie’s route running is smooth with good speed and acceleration, and the ability to generate yards after catch.

It’s a reason why McConkey’s skills in Georgia were able to translate so well to the pros considering the tools he has:

Ladd is a badd man‼️

: #NOvsLAC on FOX#GoDawgs | #DawgsInTheNFL pic.twitter.com/NTrnVb0oUj
— Georgia Football (@GeorgiaFootball) October 27, 2024

As far as how the Browns can contain McConkey, it depends. Cornerback Denzel Ward is the best cornerback on the team but he’s currently in concussion protocol and his status is up in the air. Cornerbacks Greg Newsome and Martin Emerson have had their fair share of struggles this year, but either one will be keyed with containing him. However, putting Cam Mitchell on McConkey is something that should be considered.

S Elijah Molden

If there is one player that has been a surprise on this Chargers defense, it’s Molden.

Molden, the 2nd round pick originally with the Tennessee Titans was traded to the Chargers before the season and he has fit in well. Molden is being utilized in the form of the nickel/safety spot. You will see Molden at safety in certain formations, sometimes he will be at the nickel cornerback position:

His instincts stand out when you turn on the tape and he is someone who deserves more reps going forward for Los Angeles.

As far as how Cleveland can avoid him, it’s simple. Don’t force anything his way. We all know how aggressive QB Jameis Winston can get, he can push the ball down the field but he can put the ball in harm's way. Molden can take advantage of that, he leads the team currently in interceptions.

Browns, NFL trade deadline: What a Za’Darius Smith trade could bring

If rumors are true, the Browns just might be sellers at the NFL trade deadline

The NFL trade deadline fast approaches. The Cleveland Browns have been linked to being huge sellers and ditching not only good athletes but players with large contracts. The deadline is November 5th at 4:00 PM Eastern.

RELATED: 3 STARTERS THAT COULD BE ON THE MOVE

The most prominent name rumored with the Browns is DE Za’Darius Smith, age 32. He is currently on a two-year extension that has a cap hit this year at $5.235 million this season and $9.433 million in 2025.

That is peanuts for a stud pass-rushing EDGE rusher.

Despite starting every game this year, he is rumored to be on the trade block within a week. It will be interesting how the outcome of Week 9 impacts Cleveland’s plans.

ZDS came to the Browns known for his ability to sack quarterbacks. He had 13.5 sacks in 2019, 12.5 in 2020, 10.0 for the 2022 season, and 8.5 in 2018. With Cleveland last year, he netted 5.5 sacks. Not exactly what the defense was looking for with his reputation.

Still, DC Jim Schwartz loves this guy and wanted him back - thus the extension.

His stats this year include 22 total tackles, one missed tackle, nine pressures, five sacks, one knockdown, three hurries, six QB hits, and five tackles for loss. Nothing to write Grandma about, but consistent numbers. He is decent against the run and last year his stats increased as the games on the calendar fell off.

In order to move ZDS, the Browns must have a replacement. That man is Ogbo Okoronkwo. He is just 29 years old with good speed coming off the edge. Cleveland believes a combination of Ogbo and the youngster Isaiah McGuire can replace the aging ZDS and get the same numbers for a lot less coin.

Ogbo signed a three-year deal worth $19 million with an average salary of $6.33 million per season while McGuire is still on his rookie deal on a four-year contract for $4.55 million and a base salary of $915,000.

Several NFL clubs have inquired about the services of both DE Myles Garrett and ZDS. The Atlanta Falcons appear to be the most aggressive, but the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders have a lot of interest. All three teams have issues getting to the quarterback and each one has emphasized that ZDS still has excellent skills in this department.

Dak Prescott #4 of the Dallas Cowboys is sacked as he holds the ball by Za’Darius Smith #99

The Browns rumored to be “sellers” came about when GM Andrew Berry shipped off their top receiver Amari Cooper and his five Pro Bowls to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for third and seventh-round draft picks. A sixth-round pick went back with Cooper as well. At the time, Cleveland was floundering mightily with a 1-5-0 record.

After the Browns hit the 1-6-0 mark, more conversations were being had about the franchise ditching a lot of their starters for draft capital in what would be assumed to be a total rebuild.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN has stated that Cleveland is asking for “a decent Day 3 pick” if they are going to trade away ZDS.

Which seems awfully low. Why would the Browns give ZDS away like that? For a fourth or fifth-round pick?

The only silver lining would be the extension ZDS signed because he is under contract through 2025. This makes the draft pick compensation Cleveland could get for him have a high possibility that the fourth-round selection could go up depending on his production.

However, all of this may be moot.

The Browns roasted division leader Baltimore Ravens 29-24 last weekend with a new quarterback and a new playcaller. Add the fact that all-world running back Nick Chubb is now healthy, the receivers are being used, plus the starting offensive line played its very first game together (insert Dawand Jones for Jed Wills), there is now hope that the season is not lost.

Sitting at 2-6-0, believe it or not, the Browns are just two games out of a playoff seed. No, really.

Maybe, just maybe, the team is not in sell-off mode and likes their roster just the way it is. After all, the defensive side of the ball is almost the exact same as last year when it was ranked #1 in the league.

Both the punter and kicker are elite status. It was a lack of offense that was killing this season. And even then, they lost by six to the New York Football Giants, four to the Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles, and seven to the Cincinnati Bengals. A play here or there could have changed the outcome of any of these games. Instead of 2-6-0, this team may have been 6-2-0.

And what happens if the Browns defeat the Los Angeles Chargers this weekend? A two-game win streak? Closer numbers for a playoff seed?

Will shipping off their starters improve the roster this year? Trading players for draft picks has the ability to improve next year’s roster but not this season.

Unless the Browns want to make a trade and bring in a guy or two now, then that should work. For this year.

But if Cleveland begins to gel simply because the old quarterback was the problem or the old playcaller wasn’t doing enough, why break this team apart?

Before the season began, it was perceived that the Browns had a really good ballclub. If the two main problem areas are eliminated, what if that is still true?

If all these NFL teams are calling about Smith, then that must mean he is a good player. Don’t the Browns need good players? This year and next?

Thursday Night Football, Week 9: Texans vs. Jets open thread

Browns fans can also use this as an open thread.

Week 9 of the NFL season kicks off tonight as the Houston Texans take on the New York Jets.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Texans are 1.5 point favorites against the Jets. The Texans have won four of their last five games, but most of their games during that stretch were tightly contested. They are 4-0 at home, and 2-2 on the road.

The Jets are in the midst of a disastrous 5-game losing streak, and Aaron Rodgers and the Jets faithful are frustrated. Who is to blame? The offense? The defense? The coaching? Like Cleveland earlier this season, nothing can seem to go right for the Jets. My picks record has been pretty decent this season, but I often feel like I rarely take an upset. Despite the spread being low, I think a 2-6 team beating a 6-2 team would qualify as an upset, and that’s what I’m going with here. Sometimes, those oh-so-close moments will lead to a win, and Houston hasn’t been as effective on the road. Jets 23, Texans 20

The rest of the DBN staff picks for the game are below. You can use this as your open thread for the game.

David Njoku, Jerry Jeudy, Ethan Pocic news is concerning for Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers Week 9 matchup could be an interesting one on the field as the AFC playoff picture plays out down the road. Both teams had high expectations and had long injury lists to start this week.

NFL Picks Week 9, and media picks for Chargers vs. Browns

The DBN staff predicts the Week 9 games, plus the national media make their predictions for Chargers vs. Browns.

Here is what the national media is saying about the Week 9 game between the Browns and Chargers:

CBS Sports (Pete Prisco) - Chargers 21, Browns 20

The Browns showed life last week in beating the Ravens with Jameis Winston in as the starter for Deshaun Watson. The Chargers have played outstanding defense this season, which will challenge Winston. The Chargers will find a way to limit Winston and Justin Herbert will get the victory on the road.

CBS Sports (John Breech) - Browns 20, Chargers 17

This week, Winston will face a Chargers defense that is giving up less than 200 passing yards per game. The Chargers haven’t given up more than 250 yards passing in a single game this year. However, they haven’t faced anyone like Jameis Winston. He’s the ultimate gunslinger and he’s at his best when he has nothing to lose, and when you’re the QB for a 2-6 team that’s heading into Week 9 as a home underdog, you have nothing to lose.

Will Winston have one back-breaking turnover? Probably, but I still think the Browns find a way to win this game and that’s mainly because everyone on the roster will be inspired by whatever Winston’s pregame speech is on Sunday. Let’s check out his pregame speech from Week 8.

Sporting News (Vinnie Iyer) - Chargers 20, Browns 17

The Chargers will stick with their “run the ball, stop the run” formula knowing they can cause some problems in pass defense for Jameis Winston. Justin Herbert builds on last week’s performance to build a lead through the air so his teammates can tee off on Winston to preserve a low-scoring game in the second half.

Sporting News (Bill Bender) - Chargers 19, Browns 16

Jim Harbaugh is back in Ohio, where he is not the most popular person. The Browns played inspired against the Ravens, offering a fitting tribute to the late Jim Donovan, and they could create some momentum around Jameis Winston with back-to-back victories. Don’t count on it. Los Angeles has just two turnovers this season. Justin Herbert will take a few sacks, but he’ll make enough plays to pull out a victory. The Chargers have won the past four meetings in the series, including two games in Cleveland.

Browns injury report: Update on why David Njoku was among 5 starters not on the field

David Njoku, Denzel Ward, Joel Bitonio among Browns not practicing ahead of Chargers matchup

As the Cleveland Browns get prepared to take on the Los Angeles Chargers, injuries linger as a concern for both teams. The initial injury report was loaded on both sides with quite a few DNPs and limited participants.

For the Browns, Week 9 could decide what the team does at the NFL trade deadline (based on recent history) as they are just two games behind the Chargers for the final AFC playoff spot.

Wednesday, Cleveland HC Kevin Stefanski ruled LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for this week but did not provide more information. CB Denzel Ward is in concussion protocol which historically has led to at least one game being missed.

At the start of Thursday’s practice, five starters, including JOK, were not present on the field for the Browns:

#Browns players not at practice today during the open portion:

-LB Jordan Hicks (elbow, triceps)

- CB Denzel Ward (concussion protocol)

-G Joel Bitonio (foot)

- TE David Njoku (unknown)
— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) October 31, 2024

Bitonio spoke to the media on Thursday and is likely to play but the veteran’s foot issue is concerning. Hicks missed last week’s game and could be trending in that direction as well.

Njoku’s absence is something to watch. DE Za’Darius Smith was a mystery absence on Wednesday but later was noted that he was ill. It is possible that Njoku is dealing with something similar but we will wait for more information in the second injury report.

Update:

Cleveland’s tight end might be dealing with something more important than an illness, at least related to playing football, given that he missed practice due to an ankle injury:

#Browns TE David Njoku missed today with an ankle injury. https://t.co/vtLxvRU0ix
— Camryn Justice (@camijustice) October 31, 2024

The final injury report will be later in the day this week due to the Chargers being on the west coast but Njoku will be an important name to watch on Friday as well.

Might be easier to list who did practice for the Browns and Chargers

Before the season, the Week 9 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers was assumed to be a big one. As the game has arrived, it is a big one due to the current AFC playoff picture but neither team is as good as many expected.

The Browns are 2-6 but just two games behind the 4-4 Chargers for the last playoff spot. QB Jameis Winston is fresh off his AFC Offensive Player of the Week award and things seem to be moving smoothly for Cleveland.

With LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out this week and CB Denzel Ward in concussion protocol, the Browns roster is a little limited. The first injury report of the week shows something similar for Los Angeles as well:
