Scientists gathered recently at the <a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzMyMg/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Physiology Summit</a>, the annual meeting of the <a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzMyOQ/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Physiological Society (APS)</a>, to discuss the science behind the biggest issues affecting life and health today.
Central to this was the study of physiology, a subject that is essential to answering virtually every critical question facing us in our understanding of life, health and disease.
One of the areas discussed related to ageing and how the human body alters and what this means for understanding health and disease. The focus included four key research areas.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzM0MQ/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Study reveals how obesity could accelerate aging in the brain</a></h3>
Obesity and a high-fat diet may accelerate aging in the brain by reducing blood flow and oxygen to the organ.
The <a href="https://www.physiology.org/detail/news/2024/04/05/study-reveals-how-obesity-could-accelerate-aging-in-the-brain?SSO=Y">researchers suggested</a> that the established link could explain the connection between obesity and cognitive impairment. Specifically, the findings suggest that obesity and a poor diet can cause damage to accumulate in the blood vessels, reducing the supply of oxygen to parts of the brain and ultimately leading to cognitive decline.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzM0NA/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Skin wetting helps cool older adults in very hot, dry weather</a></h3>
<a href="https://www.physiology.org/detail/news/2024/04/05/skin-wetting-helps-cool-older-adults-in-very-hot-dry-weather?SSO=Y">Research that simulated</a> the 2018 Los Angeles heatwave found that older adults who sprayed water on their skin reduced core and body temperature, and heart and sweat rates.
The scientists found that wetting the skin with a water spray reduced core temperature by 0.59 degrees Fahrenheit and heart rate by six beats per minute.
This important finding represents a simple strategy to minimize the risk of heat injury in older adults and there may be merit in exploring different approaches with health agencies in order to improve heatwave survival rates.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzM0NQ/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intermittent fasting may help preserve intestinal health as we age</a> </h3>
The connection between ageing and fasting is one that has received support in the academic community. The practice of eating only within a certain period may help maintain intestinal health.
The study <a href="https://www.physiology.org/detail/news/2024/04/05/intermittent-fasting-may-help-preserve-intestinal-health-as-we-age?SSO=Y">focused specifically on the jejunum</a>, a portion of the small intestine where most nutrient absorption occurs.
With the new research strand, intermittent fasting was found to lead to improved glucose control, less weight gain and reduced inflammation after eight months.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="http://APSOC.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MTU1NDgxJnA9MSZ1PTQyODc1MjM4MSZsaT00NTk2MzM0OA/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Regular exercise prevents DNA damage with ageing</a> </h3>
What is the impact of exercise upon ageing? <a href="https://www.physiology.org/detail/news/2024/04/05/regular-exercise-prevents-damage-dna-damage-with-aging?SSO=Y">A new study finds</a> that an aerobic exercise routine later in life may prevent genomic instability characterised by DNA damage and dysfunction of the chromosomes’ protective caps.
The animal model discovered that exercise was shown to be especially helpful in cells that come in direct contact with blood flow (endothelial cells).
The researchers said their findings could aid in customized interventions for cardiovascular health.

Gupta discussed the role market intelligence and surveillance plays in combating financial crimes for these entities.
Digital Journal:  How can investigations and compliance programs aid governments in detecting and preventing financial crimes in the cryptocurrency space?
Navin Gupta: The world of cryptocurrency can be confusing and overwhelming for the average person. It may seem like a place of unregulated speculation and shady dealings, where money can disappear without a trace. However, this is not entirely true. And it is the place of companies like Crystal and other industry firms to dispel such myths. Blockchain technology provides a transparent and traceable ledger which makes it difficult for any potential fraudster to operate.
Despite this, there are still ongoing issues with Ponzi schemes, ransomware attacks and hacking, which governments must tackle. The scale of the problem remains significant with Crystal reporting that even though the number of ransomware payments decreased to $16 million in 2022 from $74 million the previous year, there was an increase in attacks. So what is the solution? The key is gaining insights, intelligence, and education.
By understanding how blockchain works, following the digital breadcrumbs, and staying informed, governments can stay one step ahead of these financial crimes. It’s like having a torch in a dark room; suddenly, you can see what’s what. Market surveillance and intelligence companies are also helping to reveal these issues, making it more difficult for criminals to continue their illegal activities.
DJ: In what ways does investigation and compliance tools help ensure national security concerns related to cryptocurrencies are addressed?
Gupta: There are organized groups that steal millions of dollars from corporations. You may have heard of groups like the North Korea-linked hacker Lazarus Group – which, it has been reported has stolen $3 billion in cryptocurrency over the past six years, according to a report by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. They not only steal fiat currencies, but also manipulate crypto prices to launder the stolen money. This poses a significant security crisis for governments. Therefore, it is crucial to have risk monitoring and compliance tools in place to provide governments with the necessary intelligence to investigate such scams.
DJ: How can institutions leverage technology to enhance transparency and accountability in digital asset transactions?
Gupta: Blockchain tools are not just about the technology. It’s about response time to real-time incidents and how technology delivers that response. For instance, the recent WooFi hack is a concrete example. Within just 11 minutes of the incident, we updated our data labels. This implies that all our clients were notified of the hack and had access to information to safeguard themselves. Such a rapid response time is not feasible in many industries across the world.
Thus, exchanges and banks need trusted partners with the technology that they can rely on to monitor transactions and to perform screenings while creating visualizations so they can see where things are developing. These surveillance systems also monitor the markets and incidents and hacks to be able to quickly alert their customers so they can manage their risk.
DJ: What role does market intelligence play in helping governments adapt to the evolving regulatory landscape of cryptocurrencies?
Gupta: The entire point of having robust regulations is to protect consumers. As an example, Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) institutes uniform EU market rules for crypto-assets. The regulation covers crypto-assets that are not currently regulated by existing financial services legislation. MiCA prohibits reversible solicitation.
Through the guiding principles of MiCA, market intelligence provides information about what’s going on regarding typologies and so forth, which can be used to educate regulators. Education is an important piece. Blockchain intelligence experts have strong relationships with regulators to train them and teach them how to use and read transactions on the blockchain. They also assist with training to promote education and awareness of potential threats.
If regulators possess information about criminal behaviour, new trends in activities, and the types of hacks and scams being used, they can make informed decisions about the regulations that need to be implemented. This way, they have a better understanding and can consider what rules should be in place 5 to 10 years down the line.
Europol and Interpol have strongly benefited from shared market intelligence. It is important to note, within Europe, organizations such as the OSCE/UNODC have robust training programs that Crystal has had the opportunity to run for regulators. We know governments in Jordan, Georgia and Armenia have been very interested as well into these programs. Lastly, best practices need to be instituted and industry organizations such as the DACC are promoting what they are doing on a global scale.
DJ: How can investigations and compliance systems assist in tracking the flow of digital assets across borders to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing?
Gupta: Digital assets, like cryptocurrency, present both incredible opportunities and significant challenges, particularly when it comes to illicit activities such as money laundering and terrorism financing. Investigations and compliance systems are critical in this landscape.
First off, let’s talk compliance systems. They are the guardrails that help keep digital asset transactions within the bounds of the law. They require exchanges and other digital asset service providers to implement Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures. This means they must verify who their customers are and understand their financial behaviours. Compliance systems are like the bouncers at the club door, checking IDs before letting anyone in.
On the investigations side, these deep dives occur when something looks off. If a compliance system flags a series of transactions as unusual, an investigation might kick off to trace where the money is going and where it came from. Investigations in the digital asset space often use blockchain analytics tools. These tools can follow the money through the blockchain, seeing where it hops across accounts and borders. It’s like having a GPS tracker on every digital dollar.
Together, these systems prevent fraudsters from using digital assets for nefarious purposes.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[A soaring wave of gang violence in Haiti left 1,660 people dead and some 850 injured in the first three months of 2024, a UN report said Friday.
The death toll represents a more than 50 percent increase over the previous quarter, according to the report by the UN mission in Haiti (BINUH).
The Caribbean nation has been ravaged for decades by poverty, natural disasters, political instability and escalating gang violence.
But a full-fledged crisis broke out in late February, when gangs which control large areas of the capital Port-au-Prince launched a coordinated campaign seeking to push out Haiti’s unelected prime minister, Ariel Henry.
In the ensuing violence, “more than 4,600 inmates escaped from the two main prisons in the capital, and at least 22 police stations, sub-police stations and other police buildings were looted or set on fire, and 19 police officers were killed or injured,” the UN report said.
Henry, who was out of the country when the wave of violence broke out, announced on March 11 that he agreed to step down and would be replaced by a ruling transitional council.
It wasn’t until a month later that the council was formally established, but the crisis has gone unabated.
“Between 1 January and 31 March, 1,660 persons (1,347 men, 273 women and 40 children) were killed, and another 845 (624 men, 179 women and 42 children) were injured by gang violence,” a BINUH spokesman told AFP.
In the last quarter of 2023, there were 1,104 killings recorded and 532 injuries.
The deaths in early 2024 also include some 141 people killed by “self-defense” groups, who in the past year have begun taking the law into their own hands as the country’s security forces find themselves overwhelmed and outgunned by the gangs.
The UN report noted however that kidnappings for ransom had fallen by 37 percent across the country from the prior quarter.
At least 438 people were kidnapped, most of them in the Artibonite department north of the capital where gangs prey on public transport passengers, the report said.
Gangs have nonetheless continued to resort to sexual violence against residents of “rival” neighborhoods, the report said, highlighting in particular gang rapes suffered by young girls.
BINUH chief Maria Isabel Salvador said the gang violence was severely limiting access to essential services and called for the speeding up of the deployment of a UN-backed international security mission to be led by Kenya.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[US skiing great Lindsey Vonn has welcomed plans to use artificial intelligence to shield Olympic athletes from vicious online hate, recounting how she was “wildly harassed” before the 2018 Winter Games.
AI will be used at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the Paralympics to protect competitors from abuse.
The retired Vonn, speaking to AFP at the International Olympic Committee’s AI Agenda launch at London’s Olympic Park on Friday, recounted her painful experiences when she was competing.
“Social media can be a very positive experience but unfortunately I’ve experienced the other side of it, specifically before the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang,” she said.
“I was wildly harassed, and people were sending me death threats and that was really hard for me.
“You have enough, as an athlete trying to perform at the Olympics, than to deal with people that you know want you to ski off a cliff.
“So the fact that AI will be able to in real time take these comments down and not only that but be able to help them prosecute people, that is huge because that will, I think, change the dynamics of social media.”
Vonn, 39, who won Olympic women’s downhill gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, said she wished she had had access to the technology that will be used in Paris.
“It would have saved me a lot of anxiety and emotional trauma,” she told the conference in London.
“It’s part of being in the public eye and of course we have to deal with that but if there’s a way to minimise that type of hate speech, that’s wildly beneficial to the athletes.”
– ‘Online violence’ –
Kirsty Burrows, head of the IOC’s Safe Sport Unit, said she was anticipating around half a billion social media posts in Paris.
“We know that social media and sport are inextricably linked and they present such fantastic opportunities for engagement but unfortunately we also know in this digital age that online violence is something that is pervasive and it’s also inescapable,” she said.
Burrows said the IOC was working with a technology provider to use AI to “create and foster digitally safe environments” in Paris.
“The opportunity is available for 15,000 athletes at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games and 2,000 officials and coaches to utilise AI to capture millions of data points to be able to detect at scale, at pace in real time, targeted online abuse towards athletes and officials,” she said.
The AI system will identify threats, with the aim to remove hateful content before athletes see it.
It is also integrated with safeguarding services at the Games, including mental health and wellbeing officers.
“It’s the first time where this AI solution will be used to cover so many people in so many sports,” said Burrows.
“I think it’s really essential to better understand the prevalence of online abuse. We know it’s happening but unfortunately we hear so many times people just know they have to get used to it, they have to try and ignore it but that isn’t good enough when it’s not fair or right… we want athletes to be able to thrive in sport.”
She added: “By utilising this AI we’ll also be able to better understand online violence in sport, the typologies of violence and develop data-driven policies and interventions to help create physically and psychologically safe environments for athletes.”

The AI model known as VASA-1, for “visual affective skills,” can create an animated video of a person talking, with synchronized lip movements, using just a single image and a speech audio clip. 
Disinformation researchers fear rampant misuse of AI-powered applications to create “deep fake” pictures, video, and audio clips in a pivotal election year.
“We are opposed to any behavior to create misleading or harmful contents of real persons,” wrote the authors of the VASA-1 report, released this week by Microsoft Research Asia.
“We are dedicated to developing AI responsibly, with the goal of advancing human well-being,” they said.
“We have no plans to release an online demo, API, product, additional implementation details, or any related offerings until we are certain that the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations.”
Microsoft researchers said the technology can capture a wide spectrum of facial nuances and natural head motions.
“It paves the way for real-time engagements with lifelike avatars that emulate human conversational behaviors,” researchers said in the post.
VASA can work with artistic photos, songs, and non-English speech, according to Microsoft.
Researchers touted potential benefits of the technology such as providing virtual teachers to students or therapeutic support to people in need.
“It is not intended to create content that is used to mislead or deceive,” they said.
VASA videos still have “artifacts” that reveal they are AI-generated, according to the post.
ProPublica technology lead Ben Werdmuller said he’d be “excited to hear about someone using it to represent them in a Zoom meeting for the first time.”
“Like, how did it go? Did anyone notice?” he said on social network Threads.
ChatGPT-maker OpenAI in March revealed a voice-cloning tool called “Voice Engine” that can essentially duplicate someone’s speech based on a 15-second audio sample.
But it said it was “taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due to the potential for synthetic voice misuse.”
Earlier this year, a consultant working for a long-shot Democratic presidential candidates admitted he was behind a robocall impersonation of Joe Biden sent to voters in New Hampshire, saying he was trying to highlight the dangers of AI.
The call featured what sounded like Biden’s voice urging people not to cast ballots in the state’s January’s primary, sparking alarm among experts who fear a deluge of AI-powered deep fake disinformation in the 2024 White House race.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[When we listen to a song on the radio or in a soundtrack, we tend to assume the voice we’re hearing is the same person who brought the song into existence. In reality, many steps need to happen before the artist even makes it into the studio, from writing the lyrics to recording the instruments to fine-tuning the mix in post-production. More often than we realize, the singers we hear have nothing to do with a song’s original creation.
Even when a song is written with someone specific in mind, the desired singer doesn’t always provide the vocals for the final track. On the other hand, some songs are put up for grabs and singers must vie for the right to breathe life into them. It can also be the case that a songwriter has no choice but to put their songs on the market to fulfill a contract and pay their bills.
There are numerous cases across music history, especially in the 1960s and ’70s, where the legal rights to original songs and their subsequent rearrangements are confusing and ambiguous. This can result in artists not receiving royalties, regardless of how popular a song may be.
Sometimes artists are specifically known for staying out of the limelight with a pen in hand (looking at you, Calvin Harris), allowing others to feature as surprise writing credits on the album. Indeed, the fine print on who created a track is always available. But for many, unless awards enter the picture, writers (and producers) tend not to get their kudos until much later, if at all. To shine a light on songwriters, <a href="https://stacker.com/">Stacker</a> compiled 20 hit songs released between 1960 and today that were written by a famous artist other than the singer, sourcing from <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/">Rolling Stone</a>, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/">Billboard</a>, <a href="https://americansongwriter.com">American Songwriter</a>, and other news outlets.

Beyoncé’s 2013 song “Pretty Hurts” resonated with fans for its <a href="https://americansongwriter.com/the-meaning-behind-beyonces-empowering-pretty-hurts/">hard-hitting themes</a> of eating disorders and feminism. But not everyone knows the song was not only written by another artist but was also originally intended for someone else.
Australian singer-songwriter Sia wrote the ballad and shared that she originally had “California Gurls” singer Katy Perry in mind during the writing process. Sia sent an email offering Perry first dibs on the song, but when the singer <a href="https://archive.nytimes.com/6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/04/21/how-a-song-written-by-sia-furler-becomes-a-hit/?">missed the email</a>, “Pretty Hurts” found itself in a custody battle between Rihanna and Beyoncé. When Rihanna’s team dragged their feet for eight months without paying to secure the track, Bey’s team swept in.

<h2>‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna, written by Calvin Harris</h2>
Scottish songwriter, DJ, and producer Calvin Harris is known for cranking out popular pop and dance hits, especially in the 2000s and ’10s. “We Found Love,” sung by Rihanna, was one such banger, which took over the playlists of radio stations, department stores, and dance clubs alike.
While it’s common knowledge the recording artist produced “We Found Love,” it’s worth noting that Harris also penned the song. In <a href="https://www.nickiswift.com/308997/the-real-meaning-behind-we-found-love-by-rihanna/">a 2013 interview with Fuse</a>, Harris explained that Rihanna first heard the tune while they were on tour together. The song was also offered to Leona Lewis and Nicole Scherzinger.

Beyoncé’s fierce persona perfectly matches the mood of her 2006 hit “Irreplaceable.” But it was singer-songwriter Ne-Yo who was the lyrical talent behind this catchy, confident track. Ne-Yo initially planned to sing the song himself but was worried, stating that “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60RXqcGZvq4">a man singing it comes across a little bit misogynistic, a little bit mean</a>.” Furthermore, he figured listeners would find it “empowering” coming from a woman.

Before Whitney Houston recorded the now-universally recognizable ballad, “I Will Always Love You” was written and performed by country icon Dolly Parton, who <a href="https://www.smoothradio.com/features/the-story-of/i-will-always-love-you-whitney-houston-facts-video/">wrote the song about her previous partner</a>, Porter Wagoner.
Though excited about <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2023-09-15/dolly-parton-elvis-i-will-always-love-you-not-allowed-to-cover">the possibility of Elvis Presley recording her song</a>, Parton blocked The King from covering it because it would have meant sharing the publishing revenue. Ultimately, it was Houston’s “The Bodyguard” co-star Kevin Costner who was responsible for having Parton’s hit song in the movie and the rest was box-office and music history.

<h2>‘Little Things’ by One Direction, written by Ed Sheeran</h2>
Ed Sheeran has undoubtedly caught the attention of many a swooning fan with hits like “Shape of You” and “Thinking Out Loud.” But he’s also penned multiple memorable tunes for other performers, including the boy band One Direction.
“Little Things” was originally written about a woman named Fiona Bevan when Sheeran was 17. As they grew up, Bevan and Sheeran remained in touch, although the song Sheeran had written for her was temporarily misplaced. Fortunately, Bevan <a href="https://www.capitalfm.com/artists/ed-sheeran/news/one-direction-new-song-little-things/">found the song</a> and reminded the songwriter of it, just in time to shop it to the boys of One Direction.

One of crooner Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits, “My Way,” was written by Paul Anka. But while Ol’ Blue Eyes didn’t write the classic tune, he inspired it. After Sinatra told Anka he wanted to retire during a dinner together in Vegas, Anka channeled what he felt into his typewriter that night, churning out the hit in <a href="https://thesmithcenter.com/explore/smith-center-blog/the-story-of-how-paul-anka-wrote-my-way-for-frank-sinatra/">just a few hours</a>.
“The Rat Pack was over. He was tired. He was being hassled by the FBI and all that kind of stuff. And I was motivated at that moment to write a song for him,” <a href="https://eu.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2022/03/12/how-paul-anka-wrote-my-way-for-frank-sinatra/6991140001/">Anka told AZ Central</a>.

<h2>‘Get the Party Started’ by Pink, written by Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes)</h2>
Pink’s blend of edgy and poppy music is well-characterized by one of her early hits, “Get the Party Started.” But the spiky-haired singer didn’t write this early 2000s song, nor was it originally meant for her.
Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes penned the song <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/jun/06/linda-perry-non-blonde-pink-christina-aguilera-dolly-parton-gwen-stefani-courtney-love">with Madonna in mind</a>, but Madge ultimately declined. Shortly after, Perry received a call from Pink, who idolized the former rock band leader. “She left me this really crazy message how she would come find me if I didn’t call her back,” <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/linda-perry-my-life-in-15-songs-780874/pink-get-the-party-started-2001-780880/">Perry told Rolling Stone</a>.
Because Perry had “Get the Party Started” on hand, she sent the tune over. The upbeat song helped push Pink up in the charts and onto everyone’s radar.

“Breakaway” is one of the best-known songs from “American Idol” darling Kelly Clarkson. But it turns out rock singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne is the talent behind the words of Clarkston’s hit single.
According to Lavigne, she’d <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/music/avril-lavigne-kelly-clarkson-wrote-breakaway-song-rcna18684">written the song for her first album</a> when she was young. “I was leaving my small town, went to the city, I took a chance, I took a leap of faith on my career,” Lavigne <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffX9NEwMrQI">relayed to “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”</a> “It was like, a very scary thing, leaving my world behind and taking a chance is what the song was written about.”
When “Breakaway” didn’t make it onto Lavigne’s album, the Canadian artist gave it to Clarkson to use on her second album of the same name, released in 2004.

<h2>‘Can We Talk’ by Tevin Campbell, written by Babyface</h2>
Anyone who is a fan of ’90s R&B is familiar with Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk.” The young performer’s distinctive voice made a perfect companion to singer-songwriter Babyface’s sympathetic lyrics about a shy guy looking to approach someone special.
Already at the height of his prowess with hits for Boyz II Men under his belt, Babyface provided Campbell with this signature song that still hits hard today. There were rumors that “Can We Talk” was <a href="https://www.revolt.tv/article/2022-10-24/247206/babyface-confirms-can-we-talk-was-written-specifically-for-tevin-campbell">almost given to singer Usher</a>. But the legendary producer confirmed that the song was written specifically with the then-17-year-old Campbell in mind.
“It all depends on the voice,” Babyface <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CkGMqAHP6RI/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=95507683-be01-4958-bc37-d69618a9fecf">said on The Breakfast Club</a> when asked if he had reservations about giving the song to a young Campbell. “And if someone has that voice and gives it a good feeling … that’s ultimately what you want. You can give it to someone that’s seasoned, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll pull it off the same way.”

An iconic Motown band, The Temptations are responsible for such memorable tunes as “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” But one of their best hits is probably “My Girl.” The song, still played in many weddings today, was the band’s first <a href="https://www.udiscovermusic.com/artist/the-temptations/">#1 Billboard Hot 100 hit</a>. And it’s all thanks to songwriter and former member of <a href="https://top40weekly.com/smokey-robinson-the-miracles/">The Miracles</a> <a href="https://americansongwriter.com/5-songs-you-didnt-know-smokey-robinson-wrote-for-other-artists/">Smokey Robinson</a>, with the help of fellow group member <a href="https://www.loc.gov/item/prn-18-028/">Ronald White</a>.
Robinson originally wrote the song about his wife, <a href="https://afropop.org/articles/interview-with-claudette-robinson-first-lady-of-motown">Claudette Rogers Robinson</a>, and made some adjustments to fit the voices and personalities of The Temptations. Since the song’s release in 1964, “My Girl” has been <a href="https://www.npr.org/2000/06/04/1074993/my-girl">played worldwide</a> and was introduced to the <a href="https://www.loc.gov/static/programs/national-recording-preservation-board/documents/MyGirl-Ribowsky.pdf">National Recording Registry</a> in 2017.

<h2>‘(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman’ by Aretha Franklin, written by Carole King</h2>
“American history wells up when Aretha sings,” former President Barack Obama <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/04/04/aretha-franklins-american-soul">told The New Yorker</a>, and “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman” is a song inextricably linked with the iconic artist. Yet, this top 10 hit was written by then-songwriting couple Carole King and Gerry Goffin. According to King, she and her husband were <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/28/entertainment/aretha-franklin-biggest-songs-stories-trnd/index.html">walking down a New York street</a> one day when a top music exec came up in a limo and asked them to write a hit for the R&B legend. That night, the couple got to work with music and lyrics.

There are conflicting stories about who the Bee Gees originally wrote “Islands in the Stream” for. Some <a href="https://www.wideopencountry.com/islands-in-the-streams-lyrics/">reports say</a> <a href="https://www.wideopencountry.com/islands-in-the-streams-lyrics/">Marvin Gaye</a> was front of mind, though Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/country/barry-gibb-interview-duets-album-dolly-parton-9507251/">told Billboard</a> he wanted Diana Ross.
At any rate, the track named after an Ernest Hemingway novel went from an R&B track to a country song when Kenny Rogers caught wind of it. Rogers looped in Dolly Parton and the track was reworked to fit the duo. Despite the genre switch, the song did reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

<h2>‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinead O’Connor, written by Prince</h2>
Sinéad O’Conner’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” was originally written by Prince, who wrote it for The Family, a band he created and produced music for. According to Susan Rogers, Prince’s former sound engineer, the song was written in 1984 when the artist was on a “creative roll.”
Rogers <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/apr/19/nothing-compares-2-u-prince-original-sinead-o-connor-family-classic-released">told The Guardian</a> that the lyrics were connected to Sandy Scipioni, Prince’s housekeeper, who left temporarily when her father had a heart attack and the artist’s growing feelings for someone in The Family. “One day, he went into a room with a notebook and, within an hour, emerged with the lyrics to ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’… The song came out like a sneeze,” Rogers said. The song was later given to O’Connor in 1990 and became one of her most popular tracks.

Although UB40 knew they were covering a song written by another artist, because of their reggae style, they had no idea “Red Red Wine” was penned by the legendary Neil Diamond. That’s why the British group actually <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/2017/01/16/the-untold-story-behind-ub40s-hit-reggae-song-red-red-wine/">miscredited the song’s origins</a> during its 1983 release.
Reflecting on the blunder, Terence Wilson, aka Astro of UB40, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/ub40-red-red-wine-labour-of-love-8472113/">told Billboard</a>, “You could’ve knocked us out with a feather when we found out it was actually Neil Diamond.” The band had only ever known the song as performed by Jamaican singer Tony Tribe. Even when the band saw the “N. Diamond” writing credit, they thought it referred to a Jamaican artist, a Neville or Negus Diamond perhaps.

After disco’s decline, the Bee Gees took a step back from performing and concentrated on writing music for other artists. One of their major projects was writing all the songs for Diana Ross’ “Eaten Alive” album, which included “Chain Reaction.”
The last song written for the album, “Chain Reaction” almost never made it to the release since it closely matched Ross’ earlier sound with the Supremes. Fortunately, the former Supreme had a change of heart and heard the makings of a hit.

“Manic Monday” perfectly captured that wish for another day in the weekend; a mundane sentiment that came, surprisingly, from none other than eccentric songwriter Prince. It seemed that the song came to the Bangles by kismet.
In 1984, after Prince and the Bangles were introduced and had the chance to play alongside each other, he let them know he wanted them to listen to a song he’d written for them. It was also around the time the Bangles were recording their second album. As the band hovered around a cassette player, each member was “smitten,” Susanna Hoffs, a member of the Bangles <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/06/21/734176868/how-prince-worked-his-magic-on-the-bangles-manic-monday">told NPR</a>. The Bangles worked on the track a bit more and finally released the song in 1986, forever giving hardworking employees something to sing to when the weekend draws to a close.

While most of us are familiar with Willie Nelson, the country music rebel, this wasn’t always the case. Like many artists, Nelson had humble beginnings. At one time, the singer-songwriter was working multiple jobs, vying for the attention of the right person in Nashville.
It was at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge where Nelson met Patsy Cline’s husband, Charlie Dick, who loved the song so much he brought Nelson home <a href="https://www.biography.com/musicians/patsy-cline-willie-nelson-crazy-song">to play it for his wife at 1 a.m</a>. Other accounts say Dick played the song for his wife over and over again.
No matter its origins, the song became a country hit in 1961 and went up to #9 on the Hot 100. It also became Cline’s signature song.

When the Rolling Stones were still relatively new, and lacking a song to record, their manager asked John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles to support the new group by <a href="https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/i-wanna-be-your-man/">writing a single for them</a> when the Stones suddenly lacked a song to record.
The two finished “I Wanna Be Your Man” for the Rolling Stones in a few minutes, supposedly inspiring Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to try their own hand at songwriting down the line. The Beatles-penned song ultimately climbed to #12 on the U.K. charts.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The mayor of a mining town in violence-riddled Ecuador was shot dead Friday, the second such killing in days ahead of a weekend referendum on tougher measures against organized crime, police said.
Jorge Maldonado, the mayor of Portovelo, “fell victim to gunshots that resulted in his death,” police said on X, formerly Twitter.
He was gunned down while off-duty by two attackers on a motorcycle.
Images seen by AFP show the slain mayor lying on a sidewalk with a pool of blood around his head.
Maldonado was the fifth Ecuadoran mayor assassinated in a year, and the third in less than a month.
Two days before his killing, the mayor of Camilo Ponce Enriquez in the southern province of Azuay, Jose Sanchez, was shot dead.
And last month, Brigitte Garcia, the 27-year-old mayor of coastal San Vicente, was found dead in a car along with the municipality’s communications director, Jairo Loor. Both had suffered gunshot wounds.
The AME municipalities’ association said in a statement the killings were “indicative of a serious security crisis” and demanded “immediate and decisive action” to guarantee the safety of the country’s more than 200 other mayors.
Millions of Ecuadorans will cast ballots in a referendum on Sunday to decide whether or not to green-light stricter measures against organized crime in a country gripped by bloody gang wars.
Once a bastion of peace situated between major cocaine producers, the South American country has been plunged into crisis after years of expansion by the transnational cartels that use its ports to ship the drug to the United States and Europe.

– ‘Internal armed conflict’ –

Prosecutors, journalists and police have been among the victims of organized criminals with links to Mexican and Colombian cartels.
In January, President Daniel Noboa declared a state of “internal armed conflict” against about 20 criminal groups.
That came after a spasm of violence sparked by the prison escape of a major drug lord, who has yet to be recaptured.
Since then, the military has been deployed in the streets and taken control of the country’s prisons, where a string of gang riots in recent years has left some 460 people dead.
Since January last year, at least a dozen politicians have been killed in Ecuador, including presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was gunned down last August after leaving a campaign event.
After Garcia’s assassination in March, the government said it would reinforce security controls.
Some 13.6 million of Ecuador’s 17.7 million people are eligible to vote in Sunday’s referendum.
They will be asked to give the go-ahead for measures such as allowing the deployment of soldiers to back up police outside of a state of emergency, boosting arms control and increasing sentences for terrorism and drug trafficking.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Elon Musk on Friday came out against banning TikTok in the United States, even if it would mean less competition for his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, as the initiative sees fresh bipartisan momentum in Congress.
The US House of Representatives is set to vote on Saturday on a bill that would force TikTok to divest from Chinese parent company ByteDance or face a nationwide ban.
The measure, which has the vocal backing by many Democrats and Republicans, has also been written into a massive aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which could ease its passage in both chambers of the US Congress.
“TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform,” Musk said in a post on the social network he acquired in 2022.
“Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression.”
A number of replies to Musk’s comment on X expressed concern that a TikTok ban would set a precedent that could be used to target other social media and messaging services.
Under the bill, ByteDance would have to sell the app within a few months or be excluded from Apple and Google’s app stores in the United States.
It would also give the US president the authority to designate other applications as a threat to national security if they are controlled by a country deemed hostile.
TikTok slammed the bill, saying it would hurt the US economy and undermine free speech. 
“It is unfortunate that the House of Representatives is using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill,” a company spokesman said.
He added a ban would “trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes $24 billion to the US economy annually.”
Western officials have voiced alarm over the popularity of TikTok with young people, alleging that it is subservient to Beijing and a conduit to spread propaganda, claims denied by the company and Beijing.
Joe Biden reiterated his concerns about TikTok during a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in early April.
The House of Representatives last month approved a similar bill cracking down on TikTok, but the measure got held up in the Senate.
