20.
ASU finally has its AD after over 170 days

The future of Arizona State athletics gained a little more clarity with the promotion of Graham Rossini, who was promoted to Athletic Director.

 21.
Rossini, an alumni of Arizona State, was currently serving as the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Business Officer in the program. In that role, he oversaw departments like ticket sales, philanthropy, NIL, partnerships, fan experience, and more. He’s also been the sports administrator for three ASU sports – hockey, baseball and volleyball. He also spent time working with the Arizona Diamondbacks in a similar role.

 22.
“What we found was that the best executive to lead us was one that was with us,” ASU president Michael Crow said. “That has over 20 years of experience in sports administration, sports business, sports development, sports marketing, sports management. He’s a Sun Devil through and through himself, who’s a very, very able executive, capable of operating within the ASU system.”

 23.
The move from the University comes after six long months searching for a new AD after parting ways with Ray Anderson. The six month gap between athletic directors had consequences for ASU, with the departures of Bob Bowman and several key players in big sports opting for other schools during that time.

 24.
Immediately, Rossini will face some uphill battles, with the university’s NIL program lacking true stability and the overall poor performances from major sports in recent seasons.

 25.
Crow added that during the six month gap, the only candidate he conducted an in person interview with was Rossini, causing some backlash.

 26.
While some outside voices expressed desire to hire an AD externally, there should be some perks from hiring from within. He has familiarity with much of the program to begin with, he joins a group of leadership in the athletic department full of Sun Devil alumni, just like Rossini.

 27.
“The ability to lead the athletics department at my alma mater is a responsibility that I can enormously proud to take on,” Rossini said. “I am so thankful for the many opportunities in my life that were created through ASU and I have much to repay as a result.”

 28.
Time will tell if Rossini is the guy in Tempe, but the road certainly appears to be a little more clear in the short term for Sun Devil fans.

 50.
Arizona State couldn’t overcome the big inning in one-run loss

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.— In the final Pac-12 baseball tournament in the conference’s history, Arizona State (32-24, 17-13 Pac-12) looked to capture the opener against a Stanford (20-32, 11-19 Pac-12) a team whom they swept just two weeks ago for the first time at Sunken Diamond since 2016.

 51.
Winners of 16 of their last 20 games, head coach Willie Bloomquist had the Devils trending in the upper echelon of college baseball teams across the country. Only four other Division I teams had 16 or more wins since April 15.

 52.
The offense that had been registering unworldly numbers came down to earth Tuesday morning when the Sun Devils struggled to find answers at the plate, losing 8-7.

 53.
The Cardinal continued to show their conference prowess and potentially eliminated Arizona State from another postseason at-large bid, just as they did a year ago.

 54.
“I’m disappointed just on the fact that that was a winnable game for us,” Bloomquist said. “We had our opportunities.”

 55.
This ASU team down the stretch displayed an ability to drown their opponents with long innings, often capped off by long balls. But the offense faltered and failed to come up big when called upon in big moments.

 56.
With runners in scoring position, ASU was just 2-10 at the plate. Even worse, they were 0-3 with the bases loaded, seemingly just one hit away from a completely different ballgame.

 57.
A slow start to the 10 a.m. first pitch time saw only two hits through the first three innings by both teams. But in the top of the fourth inning, Stanford suffocated the Sun Devil offense with eight runs of their own as they extended their long inning.

 58.
Going three stress-free innings was senior left-handed pitcher Connor Markl, who had the ball for Bloomquist’s team in the first game of the tournament. Coming off three days of rest, the second time through the lineup proved difficult for the lefty.

 59.
Sophomore catcher Malcolm Moore hit the first long ball of the day with a solo shot to right-center field on a high fastball. Two consecutive hits in the inning brought runners on second and third as Markl showed signs of fatigue with his command. He walked the next batter and induced a ground ball to the left side, but an errant throw flew past Campos at home plate and gave Stanford a 2-0 advantage.

 60.
“We opened the door for them,” Bloomquist said. “They took advantage of the mistakes. Other than that, they had one inning where they put together runs when we gave them extra outs.”

 61.
Markl then spiked a fastball past Campos and to the backstop to give Stanford their third run. Bloomquist had seen enough and called the bullpen. Markl, who pitched 3.1 innings and surrendered three runs, two earned, on six hits, was credited with the loss on the day.

 67.
 68.

 69.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jonah Giblin replaced Markl, and with the bases loaded and one out, Stanford’s sophomore first baseman Jimmy Nati split the gap in left-center field and cleared the bases to break the game open for Stanford, which gave them a 6-0 lead. But the bleeding would continue with a deep two-run home run from Moore, his second of the game and inning. Nati and Moore combined for six of the Cardinal’s eight runs on the day.

 76.

 77.
That inning proved to be just enough offense to win the game for Stanford.

 78.
The bottom of the fifth was the first opportunity for Arizona State to climb back into the game after facing a deficit. Two walks and a hit batsman in the inning gave the Sun Devils bases loaded with two outs but couldn’t produce more than one run after newly named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Brandon Compton struck out and kept the game at 8-2.

 79.
ASU struck out 11 times.

 80.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior first baseman Emmon Lance belted a deep drive to left field that made the score 8-3 Stanford.

 94.

 95.
Following the seventh inning stretch, a two-out error led to a Sun Devil walk and single, which loaded the sacks. But again, Stanford didn’t allow the hit to get the ASU momentum to swing.

 96.
Down four runs in the ninth, it seemed as though the Arizona State offense was capable of anything after weeks of explosive innings. But, after scrapping together three runs on only one hit in the comeback effort, the inning ended with a first and third opportunity with two outs for sophomore left fielder Kien Vu.

 97.
Vu, who dazzled his way into the national conversation as one of the hottest hitters in the nation, hit a slicing fly out to left field to end things at Scottsdale Stadium.

 98.
“We put up seven runs, we had some base runners,” Bloomquist said. “Only difference is we didn’t come up with a big hit.”

 120.
ASU became only the fifth program to fail to reach the NCAA Championships after earning no.1 seed

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The hottest team in college golf saw its season come to a close early.

 121.
Having won three of their last four regular season tournaments, including the Cabo Collegiate, the Thunderbird Collegiate and the last-ever Pac-12 Championship, which was the program’s first since 2008, Arizona State men’s golf seemed poised for its fourth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.

 122.
ASU climbed to its season-best third nationally, according to Clippd golf rankings. It also earned the No.1 seed in the Rancho Santa Fe Regionals hosted at The Farms Golf Club.

 123.
And that’s where the season abruptly ended. ASU became the fifth No. 1-seed to fail to advance past regionals after placing sixth with a 15-over 855. It is the first time since 2014 that the Sun Devil program failed to advance past regionals.hat the Sun Devil program failed to advance past regionals.

 129.
 130.

 131.
ASU men’s golf coach Matt Thurmond gave a philosophical answer to a sober realitysober reality.

 132.
“I’ve coached long enough to know that there’s a certain psychology of a competitor,” Thurmond said. “I can talk about how tough the regional is going to be, and I do, but at the same time we won by a lot the last two years, and our actual experience is, ‘Is it really going to be that tough?’ And we’ve had a long run of really good success at the end of the year.”

 133.

“There’s just a certain psychology that comes after you’ve been broken, and it’s different than the psychology that you have after you win,” he said. “Too much winning is often the worst thing for somebody. It’s not great for your character, your concentration, your humility, your focus on the things that most matter, and it’s human nature; it’s not like any team gets to avoid this.”

 134.
“It’s a challenge that every coach and every player and every human has, trying to keep your edge when you’re thriving. It’s not easy.”

 135.
Thurmond’s team has always played its best ball this time of the year, but that’s the beauty of sports. Freshman phenomenon Wenyi Ding and senior Preston Summerhays, both of whom have paced the team this season, shot T-42 and T-50, respectively. Senior Ryggs Johnston, who played his last round as a collegiate golfer, led the team with a 1-over 211, which was T-9. This was Johnston’s fourth consecutive top-10 finish. Josele Ballester and Connor Williams each placed T-13 at 3-over 213.

 136.
Oklahoma punch its ticket to the NCAA Championships with a first-place finish at 3-under. California, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and North Florida will all advance as well.

 137.
With ASU no longer hosting the regional qualifier (ASU hosted at Grayhawk Golf Club 2021-2023), it seemed that the pressure of capturing gold while at home was lifted. However, golf is the sport that most resembles life, and in that aspect, Thurmond said its a hard pill to swallow, but that’s what makes the game so great. Perhaps any other three days, the Sun Devils would have advanced, but the Pac-12 Coach of the Year and his highly-regarded squad are facing the off season.

 138.
“And the way sports work and golf works, is you don’t get it every time. This was a week where we we didn’t get the job done,” Thurmond said in an Instagram post. “The college golf regionals are tough. They’ve always been tough. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done all year, you have to be great for three days. And every year there’s teams that maybe could have or should have, but don’t advance. And there’s amazing stories of teams that maybe shouldn’t have, but did because for those three days, they were awesome.

 139.
And so we end our season a little bit early. We’re devastated, of course, but we use this to get better. The sun came up today, and there’s still great days ahead.”

 162.
Homegrown talent is staying in the valley

Kenny Dillingham has hit big at home once again, landing the commitment of Saguaro high school (Scottsdale) defensive back Dajon Hinton.

 163.
The three-star defensive back is the fourth highest-ranked recruit in the Sun Devils’ 2025 class. Hinton is the sixth-ranked player in Arizona and the third ranked corner in the state for his class. Nationally, he’s the 67th ranked in the position group.

 164.
Hinton’s connection to ASU reaches deeper than just the hometown program, however, as Jason Mohns, the who was the head coach of the Sabercats, joined ASU after the 2022 season.

 171.

 172.
As Dillingham and the Sun Devils have learned in the NIL era, getting the commitment is one thing, keeping the player around is another. While Hinton won’t impact the Sun Devils this season, his commitment comes on the heels of the Sun Devils losing depth in the secondary, with Ed Woods hitting the portal last week.

 173.
It hasn’t all been negative for the Sun Devils secondary as of late though, as fellow 2025 prospect Mountain Pointe safety Rylon Dillard-Allen committed to Tempe. Allen is the fourth-ranked player in Arizona’s 2025 class, creating the possibility of an ASU secondary with home grown talent sprinkled throughout.

 174.
The commitment from the two highly touted ballhawks signals a milestone for Dillingham, as the Sun Devils have not brought in at least two top-10 ranked recruits since 2017. ASU now has the 14th ranked recruiting class for 2025 nationally and the first in the Big 12.

 175.
Hinton had offers from plenty of big-name schools throughout the nation, including four Big 12 teams with Kansas, TCU, Kansas State and Iowa State.

 176.
The Saguaro cornerback measures out at 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds. In 2022, he tallied 12 tackles and an interception before dealing with an injury in 2023.

 198.
Ia committed to Arizona State after his visit on April 26, announcing his decision on social media. A three-star recruit out of Orange Lutheran High School, Ia stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 240 pounds. He chose ASU over Colorado, Florida, Auburn, and Kansas.

 206.
He played much of his junior year hurt but made strong contributions to the powerhouse football program in Orange Lutheran.

 207.
Ia matches many of the schematic systems that Dillingham ran in his first year; a physical tight end with good size and ball skills who will need to be a willing blocker as well. Ia is the No. 17-ranked tight end in the nation and the No. 32-ranked overall recruit in California, according to 247Sports.com.

 208.
Ia is also a former basketball player and runs track and field in high school to gain more top-end speed once arriving in Tempe. He will graduate in December and early-enroll in classes here in the Valley. He will be a large part of a recruiting class that turned up the gas in the last week. Ia is one of six commits in the past week to take their talent to the desert.

 209.
Alefaio, a 3-star safety who stands at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, plays a physical game.

 210.
He is the No. 84-ranked secondary player and the No. 87-ranked overall prospect in California. He received offers from Brigham Young, Arizona, SMU and Cal before ASU offered on April 19, on his official visit.

 211.
Alefaio has the speed to stay with top-end receivers at the next level, according to Greg Biggins at 274Sports.com. He has rangy potential and is a hard-hitting safety that plays downfield, especially when lined up in the box.

 212.
Both three-star recruits play a role in ASU’s rising class of 2025 ranking, which now sits atop the Big 12 Conference and No. 15 nationally.

 234.
The five-star center will join Hurley and ASU in the Big 12

Sun Devil fans woke up to a “Woj bomb” on Monday morning.

 235.
ESPN’s senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced that five-star center Jayden Quaintance committed to Arizona State. The post on X, formerly Twitter, has received over three million impressions, making it perhaps the biggest news break for ASU in recent memory — and rightfully so.

 236.
Quaintance is the highest-ranked recruit in Arizona State basketball history, with a .9970 composite score. The 6-foot-9 center from Cleveland, Ohio, is the No. 8 overall recruit in the 2024 ESPN Top 100 high school basketball recruits and the highest available prospect until Monday morning when Hurley hauled in the star.

 237.

 239.
Major commitment on a potential 2026 NBA Draft lottery pick: Jayden Quaintance – a 16-year old ranked as the No. 2 center in ESPN’s Top 100 prospects — will sign with the Arizona State Sun Devils, he tells ESPN. He recently de-committed from Kentucky. pic.twitter.com/5u8D0Vdd9p
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) April 29, 2024

 243.

 244.
His pledge to ASU has propelled Hurley’s 2024 class to the highest ranked class ever, just edging out the 2020 class, which included four-star Marcus Bagley and the No. 8 recruit, Josh Christopher, that earned a .9967 composite score.

 250.
 251.

 252.
Quaintance was originally committed to Kentucky, but after head coach John Calipari left for Arkansas, the No. 1-ranked center in the class reopened his recruitment. After considering Louisville heavily, Quaintance’s surprising commitment to Tempe boosted the Devil hoops spirits significantly as the program enters the best men’s basketball conference in all the land next season.

 253.

 254.

 255.
With a 247Sports Composite grade of .9970, Jayden Quaintance is the highest-rated hoops commitment in ASU history, ahead of Josh Christopher at .9967.

Quaintance, 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, reclassified from 2025 to 2024. He's not eligible for the NBA Draft until 2026.
— Chris Karpman (@ChrisKarpman) April 29, 2024

 257.
 258.
 259.

 260.
Quaintance’s age was another factor in his recruiting. Quaintance will be turning 17 this July, meaning he was originally in the class of 2025 but reclassified in order to begin his college career early. Therefore, it is likely that Quaintance will spend two years in college before entering the NBA draft in 2026 when he will be 19 years old, a new rule change that came in the 2024 NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.

 261.
Before high school, Quaintance moved to Phoenix and played his freshman year at basketball powerhouse Hillcrest Prep. His sophomore year, he transferred to Raleigh, North Carolina, to play for Word of God Christian Academy where he was a 2024 McDonald’s All-American in his last year.

 262.
As a player for USA Basketball in the U16 FIBA Americas Championship, Quaintance averaged 6.7 points and 6.5 rebounds to help the team claim the gold medal in the tournament.

 266.
C Jayden Quaintance is a physical weapon on the floor with his explosive strength and agility for his size

 267.

 268.
One of the most notable aspects of Quaintance is his physicality. At 230 pounds, Quaintance has extremely broad shoulders and long arms. He has a 7-foot-3 inch wingspan and uses his long arms and strength to dominate down low.

 269.
According to Adam Finkelstein, the director of scouting for 247sports.com, Quaintance already has the offensive skill set to be a mismatch at the next level with advanced footwork, a soft touch around the rim, and explosive athleticism.

 270.
In wake of the breaking news, guard Adam Miller announced we will be returning while ASU commit Jaden Smith announced he will reopen his recruitment.

 297.
ASU captured its 13th conference title

CAREFREE, Ariz. — Arizona State men’s golf made the last-ever Pac-12 Conference Championship one to remember.

 298.
The Sun Devils captured the program’s 13th team title in convincing fashion, winning by 16 strokes and shooting a 27-over (368-365-362-352/1447) at Desert Forest Golf Club. ASU was the only team to shoot under par in the final round (3-under). ASU now holds five more Pac-10/12 conference titles than the next closest USC, which has eight.

 299.
Coach Matt Thurmond’s group pulled off the largest margin of victory at the Pac-12 conference championships since 2016. While it was the most weighty victory of the season, the Sun Devils 28-stroke victory at the Thunderbird Collegiate on April 12-13 was the largest of the season.

 300.
The win propelled Thurmond’s group to No. 3 nationally, according to Clippd golf rankings.

 310.
With the win, Thurmond secured his first Pac-12 Conference title with the maroon and gold.

I am so proud of how they handled it. We got behind early, but we just kept fighting and fighting. Thank you to my guys for everything. They really do deserve to win and I am happy for them. It is fitting that ASU wins the final Pac-12 Championship.”

 320.
Ryggs Johnston deserves his flowers, as well. Johnston shot an 8-over during the opening round, but kept poise and finished 1-under, placing second behind Stanford’s Karl Vilips (2-under).

 321.
Freshman Wenyi Ding, the fifth-ranked amateur golfer per WAGR, capped his phenomenal season with a tie for sixth. He lead the field during the third round and held onto second for part of the final round but recorded a triple-bogey hole 18, a par-4, knocking him out of the top five.

 322.
Freshman Connor Williams, who placed third for the Sun Devils and tied for 13th against the field, finished 10-over 294. Preston Summerhays, the sixth-ranked amateur golfer, fired an underwhelming 81 on Friday, but climbed back and shot a 5-under 66 to rocket up 28 spots. He finished tied for 15.

 323.
Josele Ballester shot a 15-over 299, tying for 34. Michael Mjaaseth finished last for the Sun Devils, carding a 20-over 304 and tying for 48.

 324.
Now with three wins on the season, Thurmond and his group will await regionals, which will be held from May 15-17. Seeding and location are to be determined. The NCAA Tournament will be hosted in Carlsbad, Ca., from May 24-29.

 325.
“We couldn’t have done this without the support of all our fans, boosters, and donors that do so much for this program,” Thurmond added. “That is part of what makes this place so special. Seeing the community come out and cheer us on today provided the extra boost that we needed.”
