Many employers today are launching worksite wellness programs. But are these efforts truly wellness programs? Read on to see why they may not be.Within worksite wellness, I too often think we view issues as being either/or, rather than being inclusive. Most worksite wellness programs today are not about wellness at all, but rather improving the health status of individual employees. While our attention is focused on employee health status, this does not mean we can’t also start to deliver wellness type programming and interventions as well.So what is the difference? While there are a number of wellness definitions available to consider, I will use the definition and model put forth by the National Wellness Institute (NWI). NWI defines wellness as “an active process through which people become aware of and make choices toward a more successful existence.” The NWI model of wellness consists of six, interconnected dimensions:• Physical• Social• Intellectual• Spiritual• Emotional• OccupationalLike wellness, health is often described as being a multi-dimensional concept. Health is generally measured in terms of:• Physical conditions such as pain, disability or condition likely to cause death• Emotional conditions• Social functioningHealth status is a snapshot of health at any one particular point-in-time. Health status can be measured at both the individual and population levels. Individual health status can be measured objectively through:• The presence or absence of illness• The presence or absence of risk factors• The severity of any diseases present• Overall perception of healthIn the workplace, employee health status is generally measured through the use of health risk assessments and biometric screenings. As best as I can determine, there is no absolute measure of health status. And because the measure of health status also includes overall perception of health, health status is also somewhat subjective.By comparing the above definitions with the way worksite wellness is being practiced today, we can clearly see that what is being called wellness today is not really wellness, but really employee health status improvement (EHSI). So from my perspective, let’s stop calling what we do today worksite wellness and call it employee health status improvement or employee health improvement instead. Instead of creating phony worksite wellness programs, let’s instead focus on creating solid, effective EHSI programs instead.Given today’s worksite wellness program focus almost exclusively on physical health, many of the concepts and practices already in place can be readily applied in the EHSI program model. Since health status is a function of disease states, risk factors and overall health perception, let’s focus the attention of EHSI programs on risk reduction, chronic disease management, medical self-care and helping employees to better perceive and act on their health status.Since we are not faced with an either/or situation here, let’s also start to do wellness programs at the same time we are doing EHSI programs. EHSI programs will never equate to wellness because they are not designed to. At their best, EHSI programs are designed to avoid health problems. Prevention or avoidance alone will never yield wellness. Creating wellness requires the taking of deliberate actions to move beyond the point of prevention or no health risks. Prevention and avoidance are based on the pathogenesis model which will not, by itself, ever create wellness.Recall the definition of wellness. Wellness is about creating opportunities for “a more successful existence.” Wellness is a process where employee health status is a static snapshot at one specific point-in-time. Wellness is closely aligned with the concept of salutogenesis, or the creation of opportunities for health.Given that wellness is multi-dimensional, here are my present thoughts about what constitute wellness type programming in the workplace for each of the wellness dimensions:• Physical – This domain will be covered by the EHSI program• Social – Creating positive, supportive, employee first or employee centric organizational cultures and workplace climates; random acts of kindness; employee volunteer programs• Intellectual – Brain health and fitness• Spiritual – Helping employees find meaning and purpose in both work and life• Emotional – Workplace mental health promotion; stress management; building resilience• Occupational – Integration with employee safety; integration with employee training and developmentI believe pathogenesis and salutogenesis represent different segments of the health – wellness continuum and can successfully co-exist by building off each other’s core principles. Employers can and should deliver both EHSI and worksite wellness programs.

As predicted, E-commerce has boomed (and is still booming). People buy not just through PCs but through phones and tablets as well. Buyers loved the idea! E-commerce’s market and competition is huge, now how do you keep up and advance? The word is “empathy”-put yourself in your customers’ shoes! Your goods are wonderful, your target market is all credit classes yet your customers are just coming from the mid to upper scales. Say you sell apparel-everyone needs clothing. Come on, you don’t want to be deprived of clothing purchases just because you do not have a credit card or have a low credit limit, do you? NOT EVERYONE HAS/CAN HAVE A CREDIT CARD.That’s where financing comes in. I know, you’ve heard about it. House, auto, cash, etc.-e-commerce financing is different. How do you benefit from it?Not everyone can get a credit card. However, not everyone who owns credit cards pay their credit cards. How do you help the minimum waged guy who’s got a job, good payment records and a guarantor?Easy!#1 Forget you are JUST helping the guy -Look, the guy helps you and your business in return! If you offer a financing payment method for an eBay or Amazon product (which cannot be purchased easily without credit cards), you get a big chunk of the market-those without credit cards.# 2 Know the types of e-commerce financing -Financing is making a product affordable for your customers while earning yourself MORE SALES at HIGHER VALUES. There are two ways you can venture in e-commerce financing:A. Plain Financing – You just find the leads, verify their payment capabilities, and finance no particular product-anything goes.B. Retail Financing – You have particular stuff/service to sell and you offer financing as a payment method.#3 Know your clientele -Now, there are three general categories: (1) Those who’ve got 680-850 credit scores with high credit limits (not your financing target); (2) Those with 600-680 scores, typically with $600-limited credit cards or GE capital (the perfect targets!); and, (3) Those with 300-599 scores, NO credit card (great for lay away programs*)#4 Know your risks as a financier -Financing wouldn’t be around if it isn’t profitable. However, as in any business venture, there are risks you would have to deal with. One of which (but rarely happens) is when a customer screws you upon shipping the product-like, they get it and don’t pay you or get it and opt for a return/exchange. Worry not since you can…#5 Secure Yourself & Your Business-Issue in #4: What if a customer screws you? That is exactly why you charge double or triple the worth of the product you finance-to fill in such gaps expenses. That is not the only way, however, to secure your financing business (whether plain or retail). As a customer shows his interest in being financed, he fills out a form for your evaluation and signs an electronic (since we’re talking e-commerce here)/ e-signing agreement that states your ‘financing terms & conditions’ such as his paying for the restocking fee, etc. Now, there you have it: the basic steps to your e-commerce financing success. Also note that you won’t have to use money from your own pocket to start financing. You can have your financing financed by banks and “middle men” a.k.a. financing firms (whom you’d be liable to) depending on your business situation (number of years, operating costs, turnovers, etc.).—-*Lay away financing program – You offer an installment method for your client where he pays you on a weekly/monthly basis and you keep the product until he has completed the payment. Upon completion, you ship him the item.

There is no written evidence which can tell us exactly who has coined the phrase educational technology. Different educationists, scientists and philosophers at different time intervals have put forwarded different definitions of Educational Technology. Educational technology is a multifaceted and integrated process involving people, procedure, ideas, devices, and organization, where technology from different fields of science is borrowed as per the need and requirement of education for implementing, evaluating, and managing solutions to those problems involved in all aspects of human learning.Educational technology, broadly speaking, has passed through five stages. The first stage of educational technology is coupled with the use of aids like charts, maps, symbols, models, specimens and concrete materials. The term educational technology was used as synonyms to audio-visual aids. The second stage of educational technology is associated with the ‘electronic revolution’ with the introduction and establishment of sophisticated hardware and software. Use of various audio-visual aids like projector, magic lanterns, tape-recorder, radio and television brought a revolutionary change in the educational scenario. Accordingly, educational technology concept was taken in terms of these sophisticated instruments and equipments for effective presentation of instructional materials. The third stage of educational technology is linked with the development of mass media which in turn led to ‘communication revolution’ for instructional purposes. Computer-assisted Instruction (CAI) used for education since 1950s also became popular during this era.The fourth stage of educational technology is discernible by the individualized process of instruction. The invention of programmed learning and programmed instruction provided a new dimension to educational technology. A system of self-learning based on self-instructional materials and teaching machines emerged. The latest concept of educational technology is influenced by the concept of system engineering or system approach which focuses on language laboratories, teaching machines, programmed instruction, multimedia technologies and the use of the computer in instruction. According to it, educational technology is a systematic way of designing, carrying out and evaluating the total process of teaching and learning in terms of specific objectives based on research.Educational technology during the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age
Educational technology, despite the uncertainty of the origin of the term, can be traced back to the time of the three-age system periodization of human prehistory; namely the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age.Duringthe Stone Age, ignition of fire by rubbing stones, manufacture of various handmade weapon and utensils from stones and clothing practice were some of the simple technological developments of utmost importance. A fraction of Stone Age people developed ocean-worthy outrigger canoe ship technology to migrate from one place to another across the Ocean, by which they developed their first informal education of knowledge of the ocean currents, weather conditions, sailing practice, astronavigation, and star maps. During the later Stone Age period (Neolithic period),for agricultural practice, polished stone tools were made from a variety of hard rocks largely by digging underground tunnels, which can be considered as the first steps in mining technology. The polished axes were so effective that even after appearance of bronze and iron; people used it for clearing forest and the establishment of crop farming.Although Stone Age cultures left no written records, but archaeological evidences proved their shift from nomadic life to agricultural settlement. Ancient tools conserved in different museums, cave paintings like Altamira Cave in Spain, and other prehistoric art, such as the Venus of Willendorf, Mother Goddess from Laussel, France etc. are some of the evidences in favour of their cultures.Neolithic Revolution of Stone Age resulted into the appearance of Bronze Age with development of agriculture, animal domestication, and the adoption of permanent settlements. For these practices Bronze Age people further developed metal smelting, with copper and later bronze, an alloy of tin and copper, being the materials of their choice. The Iron Age people replaced bronze and developed the knowledge of iron smelting technology to lower the cost of living since iron utensils were stronger and cheaper than bronze equivalents. In many Eurasian cultures, the Iron Age was the last period before the development of written scripts.Educational technology during the period of Ancient civilizations
According to Paul Saettler, 2004, Educational technology can be traced back to the time when tribal priests systematized bodies of knowledge and ancient cultures invented pictographs or sign writing to record and transmit information. In every stage of human civilization, one can find an instructional technique or set of procedures intended to implement a particular culture which were also supported by number of investigations and evidences. The more advanced the culture, the more complex became the technology of instruction designed to reflect particular ways of individual and social behaviour intended to run an educated society. Over centuries, each significant shift in educational values, goals or objectives led to diverse technologies of instruction. The greatest advances in technology and engineering came with the rise of the ancient civilizations. These advances stimulated and educated other societies in the world to adopt new ways of living and governance. The Indus Valley Civilization was an early Bronze Age civilization which was located in the northwestern region of the Indian Subcontinent. The civilization was primarily flourished around the Indus River basin of the Indus and the Punjab region, extending upto the Ghaggar-Hakra River valley and the Ganges-Yamuna Doab, (most of the part is under today’s Pakistan and the western states of modern-day India as well as some part of the civilization extending upto southeastern Afghanistan, and the easternmost part of Balochistan, Iran). There is a long term controversy to be sure about the language that the Harappan people spoke. It is assumed that their writing was at least seems to be or a pictographic script. The script appears to have had about 400 basic signs, with lots of variations. People write their script with the direction generally from right to left. Most of the writing was found on seals and sealings which were probably used in trade and official & administrative work.Harappan people had the knowledge of the measuring tools of length, mass, and time. They were the first in the world to develop a system of uniform weights and measures. In a study carried out by P. N. Rao et al. in 2009, published in Science, computer scientists found that the Indus script’s pattern is closer to that of spoken words, which supported the proposed hypothesis that it codes for an as-yet-unknown language.According to the Chinese Civilization, some of the major techno-offerings from China include paper, early seismological detectors, toilet paper, matches, iron plough, the multi-tube seed drill, the suspension bridge, the wheelbarrow, the parachute, natural gas as fuel, the magnetic compass, the raised-relief map, the blast furnace, the propeller, the crossbow, the South Pointing Chariot, and gun powder. With the invent of paper they have given their first step towards developments of educational technology by further culturing different handmade products of paper as means of visual aids.Ancient Egyptian language was at one point one of the longest surviving and used languages in the world. Their script was made up of pictures of the real things like birds, animals, different tools, etc. These pictures are popularly called hieroglyph. Their language was made up of above 500 hieroglyphs which are known as hieroglyphics. On the stone monuments or tombs which were discovered and rescued latter on provides the evidence of existence of many forms of artistic hieroglyphics in ancient Egypt.Educational technology during Medieval and Modern Period
Paper and the pulp papermaking process which was developed in China during the early 2nd century AD, was carried to the Middle East and was spread to Mediterranean by the Muslim conquests. Evidences support that a paper mill was also established in Sicily in the 12th century. The discovery of spinning wheel increased the productivity of thread making process to a great extent and when Lynn White added the spinning wheel with increasing supply of rags, this led to the production of cheap paper, which was a prime factor in the development of printing technology. The invention of the printing press was taken place in approximately 1450 AD, by Johannes Gutenburg, a German inventor. The invention of printing press was a prime developmental factor in the history of educational technology to convey the instruction as per the need of the complex and advanced-technology cultured society. In the pre-industrial phases, while industry was simply the handwork at artisan level, the instructional processes were relied heavily upon simple things like the slate, the horn book, the blackboard, and chalk. It was limited to a single text book with a few illustrations. Educational technology was considered synonymous to simple aids like charts and pictures. The year 1873 may be considered a landmark in the early history of technology of education or audio-visual education. An exhibition was held in Vienna at international level in which an American school won the admiration of the educators for the exhibition of maps, charts, textbooks and other equipments.Maria Montessori (1870-1952), internationally renowned child educator and the originator of Montessori Method exerted a dynamic impact on educational technology through her development of graded materials designed to provide for the proper sequencing of subject matter for each individual learner. Modern educational technology suggests many extension of Montessori’s idea of prepared child centered environment.In1833, Charles Babbage’s design of a general purpose computing device laid the foundation of the modern computer and in 1943, the first computing machine as per hi design was constructed by International Business Machines Corporation in USA. The Computer Assisted instruction (CAI) in which the computer functions essentially as a tutor as well as the Talking Type writer was developed by O.K. Moore in 1966. Since 1974, computers are interestingly used in education in schools, colleges and universities. In the beginning of the 19th century, there were noteworthy changes in the field of education. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), right from its start of school broadcasts in 1920 had maintained rapid pace in making sound contribution to formal education. In the USA, by 1952, 20 states had the provision for educational broadcasting. Parallel to this time about 98% of the schools in United Kingdom were equipped with radios and there were regular daily programmes.Sidney L. Pressey, a psychologist of Ohio state university developed a self-teaching machine called ‘Drum Tutor’ in 1920. Professor Skinner, however, in his famous article ‘Science of Learning and art of Teaching’ published in 1945 pleaded for the application of the knowledge derived from behavioral psychology to classroom procedures and suggested automated teaching devices as means of doing so.Although the first practical use of Regular television broadcasts was in Germany in 1929 and in 1936 the Olympic Games in Berlin were broadcasted through television stations in Berlin, Open circuit television began to be used primarily for broadcasting programmes for entertainment in 1950. Since 1960, television is used for educational purposes. In 1950, Brynmor, in England, used educational technological steps for the first time. It is to be cared that in 1960, as a result of industrial revolution in America and Russia, other countries also started progressing in the filed of educational technology. In this way, the beginning of educational technology took place in 1960 from America and Russia and now it has reached England, Europe and India.During the time of around 1950s, new technocracy was turning it attraction to educations when there was a steep shortage of teachers in America and therefore an urgent need of educational technology was felt. Dr. Alvin C. Eurich and a little later his associate, Dr. Alexander J. Stoddard introduced mass production technology in America.Team teaching had its origin in America in the mid of 1950′s and was first started in the year 1955 at Harvard University as a part of internship plan.In the year 1956, Benjamin Bloom from USA introduced the taxonomy of educational objectives through his publication, “The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, The Classification of Educational Goals, Handbook I: Cognitive Domain”.In 1961, Micro teaching technique was first adopted by Dwight W. Allen and his co-workers at Stanford University in USA.Electronics is the main technology being developed in the beginning of 21st century. Broadband Internet access became popular and occupied almost all the important offices and educational places and even in common places in developed countries with the advantage of connecting home computers with music libraries and mobile phones.Today’s classroom is more likely to be a technology lab, a room with rows of students using internet connected or Wi-Fi enabled laptops, palmtops, notepad, or perhaps students are attending a video conferencing or virtual classroom or may have been listening to a podcast or taking in a video lecture. Rapid technological changes in the field of educational have created new ways to teach and to learn. Technological changes also motivated the teachers to access a variety of information on a global scale via the Internet, to enhance their lessons as well as to make them competent professional in their area of concern. At the same time, students can utilize vast resources of the Internet to enrich their learning experience to cope up with changing trend of the society. Now a days students as well teachers are attending seminars, conferences, workshops at national and international level by using the multimedia techno-resources like PowerPoint and even they pursue a variety of important courses of their choice in distance mode via online learning ways. Online learning facility has opened infinite number of doors of opportunities for today’s learner to make their life happier than ever before.

Technology entertains us and enables us to do things we could not do before or could not do as easily. But there is a price. Each new gadget and each new program takes time to acquire, learn to use and manage.

Technology is one of the greatest distractions and time consumers today. We are confronted by so many different kinds of technology: television, radio, the internet, smart phones, computers, video games, etc. Each of these takes time to acquire, learn to use, and maintain.

Consider just this one factor: how much time do you spend each day, week, month managing your technology. This includes shopping for and buying new technology and software, configuring software, learning how to use new technology, downloading upgrades, fixing malfunctions, maintenance, and exploring the many options and capacities of the gadgets and software you have. If you kept track of that for just one month you may be shocked.

Follow these three practices to manage your technology and prevent it from taking too much of your time:

1. Weigh the Benefits vs. the Cost of Technology: Next time you are tempted to buy that new gadget or download that new program consider this time expense. Often you can get by just fine with older technology and software. As long as it works well and newer versions do not contain something that will really benefit you be cautious about updating to the newest versions. It costs you in time as well as money.

2. Use the 24 Hour Rule: The next time you are tempted to download a new app or other piece of software or acquire a new device stop. Take at least 24 hours to mull over this decision. Give serious thought to the time cost of acquiring, learning to use and maintain this new technology before buying it. This will reduce the tendency to impulse buy and help you effectively manage your technology related use of time.

3. Weed Out What is Not Time Justified: Technology become obsolete or at least less useful over time. It is easy to accumulate technologies that are redundant. Be ruthless in your management of devices and software. Eliminate old technology that is redundant or ineffective.

Technology can make our lives easier and more productive. It can entertain us. It can also consume precious time to acquire, master and maintain. We must be intentional and prudent about what technology we acquire and keep in light of the time it will consume.

Spend just 30 minutes carefully evaluating your current technology to determine if it is worth the time costs discussed here. If it is not get rid of it. You can save hours of time over a year by being more careful about what technology you acquire and keep.

Daniel R. Murphy writes on personal development, leadership skills, time management and how you can build wealth and financial independence.

When most people hear about “smart windows,” they invariably think of computers. Yet glass has witnessed some remarkable changes thanks to improved technology, which allow windows to enhance the home like never before. By significantly impacting the home’s energy efficiency, smart window technology is transforming the way people think about windows. The following technologies and materials are just a few of the advances in window manufacturing today.

Photochromic Technology

Photochromic materials have been employed in eyeglasses, but they can also be used as window glass where they can respond to light intensity. This type of system can block sunlight effectively during the day so that the home’s cooling system is not over-taxed. While some light is allowed, the photochromic materials effectively block out the intensity so that homes literally remain cooler, and consumers pay less in energy costs.

Electrochromic Technology

This type of incredible technology employs electrical ions that seamlessly shift between clear and blue-gray tints. No visibility is lost in the transfer. Electrochromic smart windows rely on electricity to chemically trigger the color change. This material contains conducting oxide that is sandwiched between two pieces of glass. The oxide layers are wired to a power source that provides the required electricity. Of course, people simply notice the great effect of the tinting as well as reduced energy bills.

Gaschromic Technology

Gaschromic material provides a tinting effect that is similar to electrochromic technology. Instead of relying on electricity, however, it employs a gas reaction to achieve its effect. The result is a window that may be transparent or tinted as required. On sunny days, the tinting helps block the light’s energy from heating up the building or home. Consequently, less energy must be consumed to keep the space cool. Moreover, the HVAC system is spared from having to work overtime. (Source: “Window Technologies: Emerging Technologies- Dynamic Windows”, Efficient Windows Collaborative)

Suspended Particle Technology

With this type of technology, a film is sandwiched between two layers of glass. The film is liquid-like and contains millions of particles held in suspension. Like electrochromic material, the film is wired to a power source so it may be activated or deactivated as needed. The particles, when ‘turned on,’ so to speak, are magnetically aligned to allow for more sunlight transmittance. When they are randomly diffused, less sunlight is allowed through the window.

Thermochromic Technology

This type of smart technology responds to the changing dynamics of sunlight intensity. For use in variable tinted windows, this material constantly shifts the light it allows to penetrate through the window. This allows for better temperature control. By blocking the sunlight from the building, this technology prevents the sun from heating up the building’s interior so temperatures remain comfortable. This technology reduces solar exposure and also minimizes glare and even noise.

What is Wearable Technology:

As defined By Vangie Beal:

Wearable technology (also called wearable gadgets) is a category of technology devices that can be worn by a consumer and often include tracking information related to health and fitness. Other wearable tech gadgets include devices that have small motion sensors to take photos and sync with your mobile devices, quote and unquote.

Effects of Wearable Technology in Our Life

I decided to write about this topic, because of my observation from talking to friends, neighbors and associates that most people did not think too much about what impact of wearable technology in going to have in our life moving forward. While consumers are still debating or curious about wearable technology, companies around the world are getting into developing their own wearable devices. There are so many wearable devices available on the market today that you can buy and carry with you to monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, fat in our meat, weight lose, diabetics, smart watches, eye glasses, clothing, shoes, socks, just to name a few. Think about all kinds of ingredients in our foods that we buy and eat from the supermarkets every day that you can now monitor what is in it by using wearable technology.

Google Glasses: Google Corporation: Google has given us so much excitement in the world of technology that we are using today. Google technology has made our live and activities much easier when it comes to research and development. There is nothing you wanted to search for that matter that you would be able to find on Google. Sometimes it is technical, but for the most part it is a matter of type the word in the search box, and you get your answer right away. Think about it, years ago, you have to go to Library for hours and days looking through books of many authors, make photo copies from copier machine, and type it from the regular typewriter. But, now in matter of seconds you get your information right away from the Google research box.

Google has been in the front line of wearable technology for long time. The company did not really want to put their efforts into that technology as a cash cow for them. But Apple has capitalized on the opportunity available to them, and for simple reason, Apple is now in the front line. Google has already refine “Google glasses wearable” that is going to be available shortly. It comes in different shapes and sizes, but, not cheap for average consumers. The future of Google glasses usage is immeasurable, as I said before in this article, that our life is going become much easier, but, then, there is always a downside to everything that brings joy and happiness. For now, let us celebrate for better future. I believe Google is probably working with the Eye glass arena to figure out how to configure Google glass to prescription glasses, wow! wouldn’t that be something. In the future, you would be able to do your research from your Google glass, may be we would not need our computer any more, but time will tell.

Apple Corporation: Apple Corporation has already been released, the watch is magnificent in design, but don’t forget you will need your iPhone or Wifi technology to be able to use to its capability. Again, everything is changing around us before we even know it. You may well say you are now going to need it right, but, as the world change we all going to need them because of convenient to support of daily activities and health. They are not that expensive, but, there are more advanced wearable watches that are too expensive for average consumers like you and I.

There is another device in focus that is called Commbadge, its purpose is to give you handsfree communication no matter where you are. “The only wearable personal communicator for iPhone and Android”. You’ll have seamless access to Siri and Google Now voice command functions. Simply use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. All while your phone is in your pocket or its charger. However, I am certain that as more and more of these wearable devices developed, it would become cheaper to buy just like when our cell phone or smart TV came into the market years ago.

GoPro: Now when we talk about wearable technology, don’t forget there is another company that has been making fortune already in this field of wearable technology, and the company is called “GoPro” it has wearable camera for so many things that you wanted to do and discover as well as for your pets.

When we talk about wearing body camera, we can now see its capability by just looking at the resents events in our country with the Law enforcement community. It is making its landmark, by helping the decision makers all over the world to see through things very quickly, considering how information is being delivered in the past. That is why wearable technology is getting a lot of recognition today. It is now becoming more and more obvious that our Law enforcement community would be wearing this amazing technology in the future. And as a matter of fact most consumers have started wearing some type of these devices for their own health and protection. Who would have thought about these new devices years ago that it is going to be approved for our law enforcement community as another tools to help them get their job done and protect them as well.

Conclusion: I do not want to go too deep into technical issues or to be an expert on this topic of wearable technology, but, my intention is to bring it into focus, so we as a consumer and educator can start to talk about how this wearable technology is going be used by us and our children in the near future. We as a consumer are always behind the curve when it comes to new technology. So, therefore, all of us need to be prepared for this technology that is here to stay.

I am a software information technology consultants and banking management for the past ten years with major fortune 500 companies. I enjoy reading, writing, and blogging. I am a foot ball, baseball, tennis and soccer fan or you can just call me all sports fanatic. This report is based upon my years plus of experience in my field, research and day to day observation of wearable technology devices. For more information visit:

iBeacon or Beacon as its sometimes known as, is a technology that allows mobile App users to listen for signals from beacons in the physical world. The iBeacon technology allows mobile Apps to deliver hyper-contextual content to users based on a location. This technology makes use of Bluetooth low energy.

Bluetooth Low Technology

This is technology that is used for transmitting data over short distances. From its name, this technology consumes very low energy. According to the creators of the App, the Bluetooth low technology can last up to 3 years on a single coin cell battery.

When it comes to cost, the technology is 60-80% cheaper than traditional Bluetooth.

Bluetooth low energy is ideal for simple applications that require small periodic transfers of data. Classic Bluetooth is the most preferred type of Bluetooth.

How iBeacon Works

As mentioned, the beacons installed in your phone listen to transmitted signals and respond accordingly when the phone comes into range. For example, if you pass a beacon in a shop, the retailer’s shop will display a special offer alert for you. If you visit a museum, the museum’s app will provide you with special information about the closest display.

iBeacon is a big deal as it allows brands, apps, and retailers to understand where the customers are in the brick and mortar environment. Since the involved parties know where the customers are, they are able to send valuable messages and advertisements in the customer’s phone.

How The Technology Differs From Other Technologies

There are a number of ways in which iBeacon differs from other location-based technologies. One of the differences is that iBeacon is a one way transmitter to the receiving device. You also must have installed the iBeacons app in your device for you to interact with the beacons.

Points To Note

Although, the iBeacon technology is designed to pass advertisements, the adverts won’t be a bother to you as the technology doesn’t send useless messages. Also, the technology won’t deliver notifications until a given threshold is attained.

If you are receiving a lot of notifications, you can stop them by changing the permissions. You can also stop the notifications by switching off Bluetooth or by uninstalling the iBeacon app.

Conclusion

This is what you need to know about iBeacon. Although, the technology was started with the aim of sending adverts and letting consumers know about available offers, it’s now being used for other functions such as money transfer.

Computers are in the schools. Whether they are in labs, in the library, in mobile pods, or in individual classrooms, the computers are there. But what will it take to ensure that these computers are used as high quality learning tools?Today’s high-tech innovations will have little effect on education if schools adopt them without building “human infrastructure” that includes adequate training for teachers, proclaims the Benton Foundation in their recent report, The Learning Connection. Schools in the Information Age. So just what is “adequate training” for teachers?According to more than 10 years of Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow research, to effectively integrate technology in education, teachers need to learn not only how to use computers, but specifically how to use computers for teaching and learning. At the same time the learning experiences being created by these educators must be re-examined, as technology changes both what is possible in the classroom, as well as what will be required of students when they graduate and join the workforce. In 1991 the US Department of Labor issued What Work Requires of Schools, a SCANS Report for America 2000, The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills, defining the skills and attributes essential for workforce success. To the traditional basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, the report added listening and speaking, as well as decision making and problem solving. Beyond these basic skills, the report sited as vital the ability to identify, organize, plan, and allocate resources; to acquire, evaluate, and organize information; to work well with others; to understand complex inter-relationships; and to work with a variety of technologies. Not only do educators need to learn to use computers, but they need to learn to integrate them into the learning experience in a way that fosters the development of this higher order skill set. In many cases, this requires fundamental changes in classroom practice. Seating students in rows and having them complete drill and practice exercises, whether on the computer or on a ditto page, is unlikely to accomplish the ambitious goals implied by the SCANS Report. The vast majority of technology staff development programs have as their focus learning how to use individual software applications. Educators who have experienced this type of application training report that it does not have a significant impact on how they use technology in their teaching. That is, learning about the application itself does not translate into changing classroom practices, and thus has little or no impact on student learning. When learning about technology is firmly rooted in the context of teaching, however, the results are quite promising. Using a technology staff development model created as a result of more than 10 years of research through the Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), many school districts are seeing what happens when teachers are able to transfer their learning from the staff development experience into classroom practice. In order to have a significant impact on classroom practice and ensure effective technology integration, schools and districts must make a significant investment in a coordinated approach to staff development like the model based on the ACOT research. Real change requires providing educators with a sequenced program of quality staff development experiences, along with followup and ongoing administrative support. In Fulton County, Georgia, where they are in the second year of their technology staff development program based on the ACOT model, vanguard teams of teachers are serving as mentors within their schools, providing a model of effective technology integration for other teachers to follow. During the first year of the program these vanguard teachers participated in either four or six days of technology integration training offered through Apple Staff Development.During the two-day training sessions the vanguard team members experienced firsthand what it is like to engage in an integrated lesson with technology, while the course facilitator modeled an effective style of teaching in a technology-enriched, engaged learning environment. Technology skills were acquired in context. The learners (in this case the teachers in the staff development course, but it could as easily have been a group of students) were highly motivated to learn the technology skills to complete their projects, and the relevance of the technology learning was immediately evident.Building on the experience of participating in an effective lesson, the vanguard team members reflected on what they had learned and how they could apply their insights to designing integrated lessons of their own. On the second day, they were given the opportunity to redesign a favorite unit of instruction, integrating technology. Upon returning to their classrooms, these redesigned units provided an initial opportunity to experience integrating technology in their teaching. As they experienced the effectiveness of this new way of teaching, the redesign of other units followed.Over the course of the first year of the program, these vanguard team members became increasingly comfortable with integrating technology within their own classrooms and prepared themselves to serve as role models to other teachers. Now in the second year of the program, Fulton County is both expanding its vanguard team by providing the integration training to additional teachers, while at the same time empowering the trained vanguard teachers to share what they have learned with their colleagues. This seeding approach, having at least two teachers in every school who can serve as mentors to their peers on site, has proven effective in motivating teachers to take the risk and make the personal investment required to effectively integrate technology into the classroom. The CEO Forum on Education and Technology’s Star Chart establishes a “target technology” level for all schools to strive for that would give students regular and consistent access to technology to use as needed to support their learning endeavors, and have educators using technology to access information, communicate with students and parents, and for administrative tasks. They challenge all schools to achieve this target level by the year 2005.We won’t get there simply by putting computers in schools, nor by training teachers on how to use software applications. True technology integration requires supporting and training educators in instructional models that effectively integrate technology. It requires that teachers have professional development programs in which they can experience effective use of technology in service of teaching and learning, and that they receive the support required to modify their own teaching practices to replicate these models. Once the majority of teachers have their students using technology to gather, analyze and publish information, as well as collaborate on projects, we will know that technology is truly a tool for teaching and learning. At this point we will be taking advantage of the opportunity technology presents to prepare our students to become successful knowledge workers of the future.

Employees, who make the organization and run its operations, work only when some right person or some other right method tells them in a comprehensible way to do so. Communication is the prime shaft that runs the machine of entire organization no matter how big it is. Employees, if properly communicated to, will understand the vision or grand plan or short term plan or daily work scheme of the organization and contribute their share to its success. A subordinate who understands the mind of the boss when the latter employs right communication methods would comply with latter’s instructions to his highest satisfaction. If a subordinate sends in the right report, the boss or the management team would take the right decision. If the chairman of a company explains to the media correctly the future plans of the company, the investing public would invest their funds with the company. If the employee who has been denied a promotion makes representation correctly, the management may reconsider the earlier decision. All the preceding situations confirm that communication is the trigger of actions as well as the agent of change, without which the organization either stagnates or fails in effective delivery of its offering. The need for better and organized communication has never been more accentuated than now all owing to replacement of owner-managed small organization with big organizations employing numerous employees. In earlier days, the owner could get done what he wanted with oral instructions or conversation where there was little likelihood of its being distorted or lost, since the communication was direct- there were not so many levels as we see now. Though communication, irrespective of the size of the organization, has the potential of being distorted or lost, the impact of such failure then was not as much as it would be now. Today, the flow of communication passes through many levels and thus faces several occasions of failure like distortion, loss and delay. Now that the power of communication has been fully realized which was not so for over several decades, the business is no longer limited to geographic boundaries and further, expanded across the globe and that too very effectively with the best control over such business wherever it is being located and operated. Many organizations like nationalized banks in India which were lagging behind in bringing its communication systems like ATMs in step with other competitors were about to lose their business but for their realization of necessity of installing best communication systems-ATMs & Core Banking Software- which are now operational in most of the banks.Henry Mintzberg (Sekaran, 2004, p-120), while researching on the managerial jobs, found that managers spent 6 % of their working time in communicating with others over phone, 10% in unscheduled meetings and 59% scheduled meetings. It means that mangers spend 75% of their time in communicating. The function of communication in organizations has risen in its importance of late due to varied reasons like advent of large sized organizations, technological advancement, growth of trade unions and so on. Sri K.K.Sinha (2002, pp-9-11) has enumerated the reasons for increasing importance for communication function, which are briefly discussed in the following paragraphs.1) Large -sized Organizations: When organizations grow in terms of operations, workforce, locations, volume and product variety, which usually happens over a period of time due to the opportunities presented to a business organization, the organization will be staffed with numerous employees arranged in multiple hierarchical levels. In a multi-hierarchical organization, communication is indirect in that several persons will be in communication with several others but not directly. The person needing to get a job done does not communicate directly with the person enjoined to do it but conversely talks to a person who is subordinate and who is not necessarily the one who executes, but only sends the communication down the hierarchy. The communication flows down the several levels numbering from three to fifteen levels. These multiple levels inherently cause the communication to be either distorted or lost or delayed unless properly managed.2) Technological Advancement: The world, since the beginning of the twentieth century, has been witnessing astonishing developments in technologies like those related to new electronic products, new delivery services, new transport methods etc, which not only benefit the organizations but also complicate the process of organizing and managing businesses so much so that new technologies are being resisted now. Hence, it requires a lot of best-managed communication. That apart, the new technologies coupled with blurred boundaries created wider physical distances between different departments of the organization. These distances necessitate the proper management of communication so that all organs work in tandem rather than at cross-purposes.3) The Human Relations Aspect: The management has to maintain good human relations with employees to get the best out of them. There is a growing awareness in corporate circles that the relationship between the manager and the subordinate is not the one between master and servant but that between partners. For the relationship to be best maintained, hearty, rapport-building and problem-solving communication is necessary. Good relations with employees boost their morale and thus ensure best cooperation and best productivity.4) Growth of Trade Unions: Trade Unions have grown too large to be ignored while any kind of change is introduced into the organization. The change may cover new technology, new procedure, new work goals, new product, new locations etc. All these cannot be successful unless the all those connected with them put their heart and soul into such changes. Any change is resisted since on its face it seemingly presents a host of nervous feelings- insecurity, difficulty and disturbance to smooth flow of life. A well-designed communication only clears all the confusion and fear, leading to the acceptance of change and thus working it out to the benefit of the organization.5) Public Relations Aspect: Corporate bodies owe their existence and growth very much to a certain host of stakeholders such as shareholders, customers, suppliers, lenders, employees, government and general public. All these stakeholders cherish certain expectations of reciprocation from corporations. Organizations also have the responsibility to take care of the stakeholders and vulnerable sections of general public. The organizations have to communicate constantly and effectively with the stakeholders about its programs and plans related to the service to stakeholders, else the former doesn’t get the necessary support or resources from the latter. It takes a lot of quality communications from the organizations to build goodwill among the public about the organization.6) Interpersonal Relationships: The recent developments in the behavioral sciences covering transactional analysis, good relationships, empathy etc and also the teachings of Stephen Covey, Dale Carnegie, Eric Berne, Edward De Bono etc have placed a lot of emphasis on relationships and the role of communication in building relationships. The success of an individual is attributed to the ability of his to communicate with his peers, superiors and subordinates. The communication is the lifeblood of the organization, which fact has to be realized by all those wishing to make their venture a success. While focus on the best communication and the requisite systems to facilitate it is a compelling need for the organizations, communication skills are highly essential for managers across all levels as well.Lesikar &.Flatley ( 2002, p.3 )made note of the research findings in their most well read reference book on communication, which are briefly mentioned in the following.A nationwide survey of corporate recruiters conducted by Charles M Ray, John J Stallard, and C Steven Hunt in 1993 confirms the highest importance placed by recruiters on communications skills of the candidates for employment. The findings of the survey revealed that the recruiters ranked four communications – writing, speaking, listening, and interpersonal communicating- in the top five criteria for selecting employees. Further, in a study by Robert Half International of 1000 largest employers in United States, 96% reported that employees must have good communication skills to get ahead.A study on MBA applicants also revealed that 85% of the recruiters opine that the communication skills are the most important of the skills sought. In another study of 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, they ranked business communication first among all core business courses. In another survey, it was found that college graduates with higher scores in literacy (use of printed and written communication) earn 47% more than lower scoring graduates earn. A study by Office Team concluded that such skills as writing and speaking well, displaying proper etiquette, and listening attentively will probably determine career success. It is clear from the foregoing discussion that communication skills are a must for entry into employment as well as career success. In regards to importance of communication in organizations, if an organization fails to appreciate its importance, it is bound to hit the dead end.Reference ListSekaran, U. ( 2004).
