<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Korean women’s volleyball team (43rd in world rankings), led by Fernando Morales, has finally escaped from the swamp of consecutive losses in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Volleyball Nations League (VNL).

 The Korean national team won the fourth game of the 2024 FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) VNL (Volleyball Nations League) at Maracana New Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 20th (Korea time) with a set score of 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18).
It is the first win after three consecutive losses in this tournament, and the VNL victory in 1,070 days after winning Canada 3-2 on June 15, 2021. After a large number of members of the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, including Kim Yeon-kyung (Heungkuk Life Insurance) and Yang Hyo-jin (Hyundai Engineering & Construction), retired, the Korean women’s volleyball team was in a long-running loss starting with the 2021 tournament. It started under coach Cesar Hernandez, but in the 2022 tournament, he was humiliated by losing 12 games for the first time in VNL history without winning a point. Last year’s tournament was held in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, and there was a home ground advantage, but it lost 12 consecutive games again.
Nothing seemed to change this time, either. He was shut out in a match against China on Saturday, against Brazil on Sunday, and against the Dominican Republic on Sunday, and eventually became the hero of the disgraceful 30 consecutive VNL record. However, he won the last game in Week 1, heralding the beginning of a reversal.
Kang So-hwi (Korea Expressway Corporation), Park Jeong-ah (Pepper Savings Bank), and Jeong Ji-yoon (Hyundai Engineering & Construction) took the lead in escaping the losing streak by scoring 54 points. Kang scored 22 points, the most between the two teams, while Park Jung-ah and Jeong Ji-yoon scored 16 points, respectively. Lee Ju-ah (IBK Industrial Bank) and Lee Da-hyun (Hyundai Engineering & Construction) at the center also contributed with 11 points and 8 points, respectively. Although the team was ahead 12 to 8 in blocking, the team continued its tight race, but our decisiveness was even more outstanding.
Thailand scored 17 points for Chatchuon and 15 points for Wipawi (Hyundai Engineering & Construction) with the main setter Ponpoon absent.
From the beginning of the first set, Korea took the lead in the performance of Kang So-hwi and Jung Ji-yoon. Lee Da-hyun continued to lead the game with a score in the center and took advantage of the opponent’s mistakes to reach the 20-point mark. Jung Ji-yoon finished the first set with a rear attack.
Korea, which lost the second set after a close game, took the lead early in the third set thanks to Jung Ji-yoon’s performance. Jung started the score hunt with a block and a serve score, and Lee Joo-ah cheered up in the center and ran to 17-7. On top of that, Kang So-hwi’s Kang Spike shone, making the third set 25-16.
Korea also raced up the momentum and won the fourth set. While Kang showed off her offensives, captain Park Jung-ah revived to bring the set to life. The last score in the fourth set was Park Jung-ah.
After the first week of VNL, Korea will move to Arlington, Texas, U.S., and start its second week on June 30. The first opponent in the second week will be Bulgaria (on June 30), and then they will meet Poland (on June 31), Turkiye (on June 2) and Canada (on June 3).

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Hong Kong-listed Suncity Group Holdings Ltd has argued that if casino and gambling businesses in Vietnam and Cambodia are promoted outside of Hong Kong, they will not violate Hong Kong laws because the gaming business is legal. The company said casino and other gambling businesses will be pursued outside Hong Kong accordingly.

“Casino and gambling businesses will operate in Vietnam and Cambodia, both of which will have licensing schemes in place for gambling businesses and receive appropriate permits,” the statement said.
“The group will remain in touch with relevant government authorities in those jurisdictions and will relate to and participate in Vietnam [ese] and Cambodian legal advisers to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations in those jurisdictions,” it added.
Suncity Group Holdings is chaired by Alvin Chowchukwa, who controls Macau junket investor Suncity Group.
In a filing Friday, Suncity Group Holdings said it plans to engage reputable accounting firms to come up with appropriate internal controls, policies and procedures to prevent serious crime and money laundering.
The company noted that it is still developing internal controls, policies and procedures for its Vietnamese and Cambodian operations. It added that it will engage Vietnamese and Cambodian legal advisers in contact with relevant authorities in Vietnam and Cambodia to comply with the country’s laws, rules, regulations and government policies to counter money laundering.
The company announced a deal this month to establish and operate a casino at a resort in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The deal was signed by its subsidiary, Sihanoukville Ltd., and Golden Sun Sky Entertainment Ltd., the owner of the casino resort.
Sihanoukville is currently seen as a market targeting “mid- to low-priced” mainland Chinese tourists, and its industry lacks “meaningful laws” or enforcement, meaning there are risks for established gaming operators. But brokerage Union Gaming Securities Asia Ltd said the move to invest in Sihanoukville was a “capital light approach” that did not put Sun City’s capital at risk.
In August, Suncity Group Holdings announced it had taken a 34% stake in the casino scheme in the Vietnamese resort city of Hoi An. The deal, worth about HK$600 million ($76.4 million), gave British Virgin Islands-listed Star Admiral Inc control of the rights to the proposal for a casino with 140 tables and a wholly owned subsidiary with about 1,000 slot machines.
Suncity Group Holdings reported a net loss of nearly 1.65 billion yuan ($241.8 million) in the first half of the year. The Hong Kong-listed company does not include privately owned sources of revenue from Suncity Group’s junket operations.

Hong Kong-listed Cambodian casino operator Nagakov and Genting Malaysia’s brother, Genting Singapore, which runs the resort world Sentosa casino in Singapore, could benefit from a 10 percentage point tax hike imposed on Genting Malaysia’s gross domestic gaming revenue, Samuel Sa Yang, an analyst at Maybank Investment Bank, said in an email on Monday.
In said competitors may poach their businesses if Genting Malaysia cuts fees paid to junkets or rebates paid to direct VIP players at the country’s leading resort World Genting (pictured) to offset the effects of tax increases.
Many investment analysts said fees and rebates paid at casinos in the Asia-Pacific region are important competition areas as operators compete for dollar spending by rich Chinese and other East Asians.
Malaysia’s government said the annual casino licensing fee for Resort World Genting would rise from $120 million ($28.9 million) to $150 million ($150 million), along with the GGR tax rate hike announced on Friday.
“The new casino tariff rate of 35%, effective sales and services tax of 3.7%, corporate tax rate of 24%, and ‘Resorts of the Kings World Genting’ are the heaviest taxed casinos in Asia,” In said in a note on the matter on Sunday.
“Macao casinos are taxed at 39% of total gaming revenue, but they are exempt from corporate tax,” Yin added.
Genting Malaysia is currently working on a multi-billion dollar revamp of its Genting Highland properties over the years. The company also operates casinos in the United States, the Bahamas, the United Kingdom and Egypt.
Genting Malaysia recovered slightly in trading on Tuesday and Wednesday after the biggest single trading day drop on Monday since Friday’s tax announcement, Bursa Malaysia data showed.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Russia-based Diamond Fortune Holdings Prim LLC aims to open its first casino resort in the Maritime Unified Entertainment Zone (IEZ) near Vladivostok in September 2020. The design of the property is being finalized and construction will begin soon, the company’s top executives say.

“Construction will take about 18 months, and phase one (of the property) should be completed and ready to open by September 2020,” Thomas Gibbons, chief executive of Diamond Fortune, told GGRAsia.
The company plans a total investment of approximately $220 million in the Phase 1 project named Selena, which the company said is a working title for the property.
“Phase 1 will be divided into Phase A and Phase B, where the casino will be built first at a cost of $70 million,” Mr. Gibbons said, adding, “We expect to open the casino phase in September 2020 at the latest.”
The initial casino location will be supported by 25 hotel rooms. Hotel construction “will continue after the casino opens at a cost of $150 million,” Mr. Gibbons said.
The executive said the second and third phases of the casino resort “will be conducted in accordance with market [conditions].
The property will feature nearly 1,300 rooms as well as shops, nightclubs, food courts, and spas. “We will cater to a wide variety of customers,” said the CEO.
Privately owned Diamond Fortune was founded in 2010 by a group of Russian investors. The company was originally granted a total of 77 hectares (190 acres) of land on several sites, which at the time became a casino investor with the largest land bank in Primorsky Krai. However, the company plans to sell off some of its land and have four sites to develop two casino plans, now called Selena and Moon Gate.
Construction of the Moon Gate property, with at least US$151.5 million invested, will begin at a later stage. “We’re not moving that forward yet. We’ll see how Selena goes first,” said Gibbons.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Malaysia Genting could receive an outdoor theme park for its flagship property, Resort World Genting, at no cost if it wins a lawsuit filed in U.S. court this week, Maybank Investment Bank Bhd suggested on Tuesday.

The agency believes the casino company can successfully operate such facilities without the nickname “20th Century Fox World Malaysia,” a brand previously announced by Genting Malaysia, as it has experience running its own-brand theme park at the Genting Highland site (pictured) near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital. However, Japanese broker Nomura has expressed doubts about whether the new Fox-branded facility will have the same traction for the public.
Shares of the casino company fell 17% on Tuesday, in line with news that it is suing Fox Entertainment Group LLC, some of its affiliates, and Walt Disney Co, now a suitor to many of Fox’s entertainment assets. The lawsuit concerns notice of termination on a 2013 contract to use Fox’s brand in theme parks.
However, Maybank said it was “promising” that Genting Malaysia could run its own theme park. “Remember, Genting Malaysia ran its own outdoor theme park before it closed in September 2013,” said a note from Maybank analyst Samuel Yin Sao Yang.
The casino company’s “current share price means that outdoor theme park investments have been written off, and if Genting Malaysia wins a $1 billion claim, it can also get free change,” Yin added.
Shares fell after the market closed in Bursa, Malaysia on Tuesday, closing at MYR3.60 to MYR3.00 ($0.715) at the start of trading on the day, Bloomberg data showed. It was down further to MYR2.99 by mid-morning on Wednesday.

Genting Hong Kong told the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday that its wholly owned subsidiary Star NCLC Holdings Ltd agreed to sell about 3.15 million of its roughly 18.88 million Nasdaq-listed NCLH shares to buyers on Wednesday.

The company said it would use the proceeds that would accrue to the group to buy properties, plants and equipment, including ships that have not yet been built, or for other unspecified investments.
Genting Hong Kong is a subsidiary of Malaysian gaming company Genting Bhd, a global gaming and accommodation conglomerate rooted in the resort’s World Genting complex in the northeastern countryside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city. Genting Hong Kong controls a stake in the group’s cruise line business, shipyards, nightlife brand Zouk and Philippine casino resort World Manila.
Genting Hong Kong has been reducing its NCLH stake over the past year or so. In August last year, Genting Hong Kong sold a 3.29% stake in Norwegian Cruise Line for US$490.1 million, netting a net profit of $90.1 million. Then in November last year, Genting Hong Kong announced it would sell a 2.19% stake in Cruise Line for US$270.1 million.
In March, there was a $128.9 million profit from the additional disposal of the shares, and a resolution was made to sell the issued shares at a special general meeting in June, which has now occurred.
