131.
It’s the last day of the regular season for the conferences that have not finished already except for the American and Big Ten, which will finish on Sunday. Also, the first automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament goes out Saturday when Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville meet for the Oho Valley Conference crown.

  132.
There could be a second automatic bid determined today as well. St. Thomas is the second seed in the Summit League tournament but is ineligible for the postseason because it continues transitioning to Division I. If it wins the conference tournament, the automatic bid goes to top seed Omaha. If both win their semifinals today, Omaha will be in the NCAA Tournament win or lose on Sunday.

  133.
It ended up being an eventful Friday for a relatively quiet schedule.

  134.
Boise State lost at home to Colorado State 83-73. The Broncos had been the last team in my projected bracket on Friday, but they are now the first team out. Xavier moved up to take their place.

  135.
VCU lost at home to Dayton 79-76, dropping out of contention for an at-large bid if it needed one. The Rams did not have a very good chance at an at-large bid anyway despite being in the top 30 of the predictive metrics. They just do not have wins of high enough quality to compete for an at-large spot. VCU is still in the bracket as the top seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament which begins on Wednesday.

  136.
Further up the bracket, Illinois beat Purdue 88-80, snapping a six-game losing streak to the Boilermakers. Purdue drops down one spot to a 4-seed in this morning’s bracket. Illinois, meanwhile, is up to a seven.

  137.
There are still thirteen SEC teams in the projected bracket as we enter the day. Three of them are within five spots of the cut-line, so it could conceivably get as low as 10 in the field, but I believe it will be 11 or 12 in the end. The record for the most teams from one conference in the NCAA Tournament is 11. That was from the Big East in 2011.

  138.
In order to balance the bracket, Oregon and Michigan were swapped on the 4-line, which moved the Ducks away from their natural region.

  346.

  347.

  348.

  349.
Manitowoc Public Utilities is on the leading edge of the future of the electrical supply industry.

  350.
Not only has MPU been able to keep their rates among the lowest in the state, the local utility has also been able to adapt to change and become a driving force for bio-renewable fuel in the country.

  351.
General Manager Troy Adams took over his role in 2020 at a time when MPU was reevaluating the coal-based power plant and how to extend its life.

  352.
“We had the coal pile downtown. We were looking at rates. We were looking at the long-term viability of operating a plant on solid fossil fuel. And there was an end. It was coming,” he recalled. “We were going to have to shut the plant down based on that business model.”

  353.
But, instead of shutting the plant down and building a new one, the leadership team at MPU turned to their employees for ideas on how to repurpose the plant and keep the reliability they have become well known for.

  354.
Adams tells SeehaferNews.com that they had several very creative ideas come to light, including the expanded use of a fuel they had been sprinkling in with the coal since the 1990s.

  355.
“It is clean industrial waste,” he explained. “So, the company in Green Bay, and there’s one in Appleton, that makes it for us, had gone through the process of working with the EPA and are working with the Wisconsin DNR to get this classified as a renewable fuel.”

  356.
The big draw towards these pellets, which are made by industrial plants in Green Bay and Appleton, includes the fact that they have a similar output as coal, but not all plants can utilize it.

  357.
MPU’s power plant is different.

  358.
“Older power plants would run it through, and a lot of fuel would blow out with the ash. It was it was inefficient, but then you’d also have all that waste,” Adams noted. “Ours is designed to keep the fuel circulating until it is completely used up, so you get maximum output.”

  359.
Not only did the use of this fuel extend the life of the power plant, the move also has had a major impact on the environment.

  360.
“If this wasn’t going into the power plant, it would be going into the landfill and becomes methane, which is actually worse for the environment,” Adams revealed. “We actually have a 55% reduction in greenhouse gases by turning it into fuel and running it through our power plant.”

  361.
From a reliability standpoint, MPU is able to stockpile a large quantity of these pellets, which gives Manitowoc a unique goal for the future.

  362.
“If the Wisconsin grid drops, we could disconnect from the grid and still provide power here,” Adams said. “We’re not there. We’re working towards that. But that’s kind of the thing is, we have these assets here. The community paid for them. Let’s position so that we could do that if we wanted to.”

  363.
This transition, formally known as the Refuel Renewable Project, has put MPU on the forefront of the renewable energy industry, and they have drawn a lot of attention.

  364.
“We’ve gone and presented at a number of conferences on this, and now people are calling and asking,” Adams said. “We’ve had we’ve had people come and tour the facilities a few times over the last couple of years. Are others going to try and replicate this? I don’t know. Maybe.”

  365.
Adams joked that MPU is “boxing outside of our weight class” with this project, which he said puts them on par with some other major cities in the U.S.

  366.
“L.A. is also a municipal utility. The San Antonio is a municipal utility. We feel like we’re kind of in the same level from an innovative standpoint as some of these much bigger utilities,” he proclaimed.

  367.
A second energy source is in the works as well, transforming industrial sludge waste into clean, burnable pellets.

  368.
There is still quite a ways to go behind the scenes before this pellet, which has a higher BTU than the ones being used now, would be put into use.

  369.
Additional details on the project and everything else going on at Manitowoc Public Utilities can be found at MPU.org.

When the DOJ argued for its sale last year, it said that selling Chrome “will permanently stop Google’s control of this critical search access point and allow rival search engines the ability to access the browser that for many users is a gateway to the internet.”

  393.
The Justice Department also kept a Biden-era proposal that seeks to ban Google from paying companies like Apple, other smartphone manufacturers and Mozilla to make its search engine the default on their phones and browsers. It did remove a previous proposal that would compel Google to sell its stakes in AI startups, however, after Anthropic told the government that it needs the company’s money to continue operating. Instead of banning AI investments altogether, the government wants to require the company to notify federal and state officials before making investments in artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the Financial Times reported that Google was investing another billion dollars in Anthropic.

  394.
Google is expected to file its own proposal for its final set of alternative remedies. In the earlier one it filed in December, the company said that the Justice Department’s original remedies went “overboard” and that they reflected an “interventionist agenda” that “goes far beyond what the Court’s decision is actually about — [its] agreements with partners to distribute search.” Google suggested allowing it continue paying partners like Apple and Mozilla to offer Google Search, but also to allow them to form agreements with other partners across different platforms. Apple could, for instance, offer different default search engines for iPhones and iPads. Meanwhile, browser companies could change default search engines every 12 months.

  395.
As The Post notes, the Justice Department’s filing could be an indicator of how the Trump administration will handle antitrust cases involving tech companies. It could be strict on big tech like the Biden administration was despite tech leaders supporting the new President and his policies. Google donated to the Trump campaign when he ran last year and just recently halted efforts to hire employees from diverse backgrounds. It said that it was “no longer set hiring targets to improve representation in its workforce.” The House also recently subpoenaed Alphabet and its CEO Sundar Pichai for communications between the company and the Biden administration regarding COVID-19.

  396.
Judge Amit Mehta, the original judge who ruled that Google was a monopolist and had “acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” will hear both the government’s and the company’s remedies and will decide on the final solutions for the case in April.

Samsung finally broke its silence on the One UI 7 update for Galaxy phones, just as we got our first glimpse of One UI 8. Meanwhile, Google sent out the last Feature Drop for Android 15, then followed that up by confirming Android 16 is still on track for an early release — all in a week when Google Search itself may have fundamentally changed forever.

  444.
Towards the middle of the week, Google announced that the Play Store is getting better at promoting widgets — a new search filter and badge will now let you quickly identify apps that feature widgets. That was a big move in and of itself, but the following day, Google’s Clock app for Android was spotted adding a brand-new widget for phones that lets you quickly start a timer (something that had been a Pixel Tablet exclusive previously).

  445.
Then, late in the week, the biggest widget news dropped: Google will be bringing lock screen widgets back to phones in a future build of AOSP. The company’s announcement targeted developers and OEMs, hoping to get software makers on board, but it did tip a few user-facing features. Evidently, the system will be similar to what we saw on tablets last year, though there’s a chance this could all be contingent upon the phone being docked or charging.

  472.
We were originally expecting the first beta of One UI 7 around July 2024. That never materialized, but when Samsung released the first beta in early December and said to expect a stable version in Q1 2025, we were hoping to see the official update right about now at the latest. But then came silence, and things started to feel like they were going off the rails.

  473.
This week, Samsung says it’s back on track. The company announced that new beta builds were coming to its 2024 foldables, with another version for the Galaxy S23 series soon to come. And it followed up on that promise, seeding the first One UI 7 beta to Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 6 users on Friday. The stable update won’t be coming in Q1 after all, but now Samsung says we can expect it in April for some models.

  498.

  499.
With Android’s accelerated development timeline this year, there won’t be an Android 15 QPR3 — instead, we’re expecting to see Android 16 in that June release slot (more on that later). That means the March Pixel Feature Drop that came out this week is the last Quarterly Platform Release for Android 15, and let’s just say the OS version went out with a bang.

  500.
With the update, Pixel users get a boatload of new features, both on phones and on watches, but there also appears to be a bug with haptic feedback. Scam Detection made its debut in Google’s Phone app, but only on Pixels — still, Android users everywhere get a text version of the feature in Google Messages, regardless of phone. To prove it’s not all about Pixels, Google even dropped an Android feature bundle with plenty of new features, but the headliner is new location sharing for friends and family in the Find My Devices app.

  524. Google Search finally goes full send on AI
525.

  526.
Most websites rely on Google Search for a big chunk of their traffic, so when generative AI was first integrated into the tool, many publishers were worried that the lifeblood of their sites would begin to dry up. Google assuaged these fears, at least to a degree, by simply summarizing the results and linking prominently to sources. Now, Search is taking another step into the AI era, and this one might ultimately nix the need to click results.

  527.
Rolling out as an experimental feature, the new AI Mode in Google Search is akin to chatbots like Gemini, but with more up-to-date information thanks to its direct ties to the web. It lives in a tab at the top of your search, much like the current Images or Shopping filters, but this one lets you ask follow-up questions and essentially chat with the internet at large. It still prominently features sources and directs you to websites with more information, but it leaves you with the impression that the days of using search engines to find links are numbered.

  552.

  553.
Android Police Editor-in-Chief James Peckham was at MWC this week, and he had the chance to talk to Google’s Head of Android, Sameer Samat. The conversation yielded a few juicy tidbits about the future of Android — like the fact that Android 16 is still on track for a June release, or that Google’s in-house Tensor chips weren’t the only reason that the Pixel 6 and 7 unexpectedly got two extra years of full OS upgrades.

  554.
The bottom line is that Google has moved to a “Trunk Stable” model for Android development, meaning there’s no need to merge branches once changes are made, reducing the need for testing and debugging in the final phases. Samat also dished about Gemini’s ongoing integration into Android, likening the AI to Google Assistant 2.0 — at least when it comes to the form it takes on phones and tablets.
