style="font-weight: 400;">In 2019, Costco reportedly stopped selling Roundup weed killer, but now it’s back. What’s up with that? The Roundup Costco sells now has an “Exclusive Formula” where glyphosate has been replaced with other ingredients, including two, diquat dibromide and imazapic, that are banned in the E.U. It’s 45 times more toxic than the glyphosate-based version (a potent carcinogen).

Diquat dibromide is 200 times more toxic than glyphosate. The E.U. considers it too dangerous to use. Even when workers wore coveralls, gloves, and boots, they were still exposed to three-and-a-half times the maximum acceptable level of diquat. This can cause paralysis, blindness, vomiting, irritation, convulsions, organ damage and even death.

Imazapic‘s harms include eye irritation, muscle degeneration, liver damage, anemia, increased blood levels of cholesterol, and birth defects.

This does not bode well for people buying Roundup at Costco—who aren’t being warned of the product’s new dangers or how to protect themselves or others. It’s crazy for Costco to sell something so toxic directly to homeowners who will unknowingly poison themselves and their neighbors.

“What does it mean to live a good life? For centuries, philosophers, scientists and people of different cultures have tried to answer this question.

Each tradition has a different take, but all agree: The good life is more than just feeling good − it’s about becoming whole.

More recently, researchers have focused on the idea of flourishing, not simply as happiness or success, but as a multidimensional state of well-being that involves positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment − an idea that traces back to Aristotle’s concept of “eudaimonia” but has been redefined within the well-being science literature.

Flourishing is not just well-being and how you feel on the inside. It’s about your whole life being good, including the people around you and where you live.

Things such as your home, your neighborhood, your school or workplace, and your friends all matter.”

“The Trump Administration released its budget plan for 2026, which would gut the National Park Service, jeopardizing the protection, maintenance and operation of our more than 430 national parks across the country. The administration’s budget calls for a cut of more than $1 billion to the National Park Service that if enacted would be the largest cut in the Park Service’s 109-year history. The budget also proposes turning some national park sites over to states and removing them from the National Park System, a move that has never before been proposed by a president.

Cuts of this magnitude would devastate our national parks, further pushing them into a financial hole. This proposal comes just after a record-breaking 2024, when the Park Service logged 331,863,358 visits. Despite their soaring popularity and the economic and cultural value they provide, the administration continues to systematically dismantle the Park Service—freezing hiring, forcing resignations, eliminating purchasing ability, canceling leases and banning travel. And with a major workforce reduction still looming, the worst is yet to come.”

“As a dad and an environmental scientist, I’m always looking for ways to create a healthier home environment without relying on products full of questionable chemicals. When I first started paying attention to what was actually in conventional cleaning supplies — the ones many of us grew up thinking were totally safe — I was shocked. Brightly colored bottles, ‘fresh’ scents, and promises of sparkling surfaces often mask a reality of hormone-disrupting chemicals, harsh irritants, and synthetic fragrances that linger in our homes long after cleaning is done.

Some all-purpose cleaners like Fabuloso are marketed as safe and effective, but a closer look at the ingredient list tells a different story. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, synthetic dyes, undisclosed fragrance mixes—these are not things I want my family breathing in, touching, or absorbing day after day, especially when safer, just-as-effective alternatives are so easy to make at home.

Today, I want to share a simple DIY all-purpose cleaner recipe. It’s made from natural ingredients and is safe for kids and pets. Plus, it leaves your home smelling naturally fresh without the chemical fog.”

Colorless and nearly odorless, DEHP is found in everything from shower curtains and shoes to medical tubing, and it’s long been linked to health harms like cancer.

New research indicates the class of chemicals is also causing deaths due to heart disease, particularly in developing countries. According to a peer-reviewed study published last week in The Lancet eBioMedicine, nearly 350,000 people died in 2018 from exposure to DEHP. The research represents the first global survey of cardiovascular mortality from the chemicals, and it attributes DEHP exposure from plastics to more than 13 percent of all deaths from heart disease among adults aged 55 to 64.”

“If you follow health and wellness trends and your algorithm is a stream of cooking videos, you’ve probably come across beef tallow recently. If you’re not familiar with tallow as an alternative cooking fat, that’s okay — it’s still nowhere near as popular as its cousin, butter, or even vegetable oils. However, beef tallow is on the rise in some circles. It’s having a moment, it seems. Or, you could say it’s having another one. The whole ‘what was once old is new again’ adage comes to mind, as a cooking fat that my grandparents used is now trending online.

If you’re still scratching your head and haven’t seen it in the wild or tried it, consider this a quick education. Beef tallow is simply the fat trimmings from a butchered cow — the undesirable parts that are removed before a cut of meat ends up in a display case — which are then rendered. Rendering is the process of slowly and gently heating the fat until it liquifies and then straining it through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer. You’re left with pure beef fat that is solid at room temperature. Here, we dive into the pros and cons of using tallow in the kitchen, with some experts weighing in, to help you pick up where your grandparents left off.”

Wise:

“On March 17, Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo signed into law a constitutional reform banning the cultivation of genetically modified corn. The action followed a December ruling by a trade tribunal, under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement, in favor of a U.S. complaint that Mexico’s 2023 presidential decree, with broader restrictions on the consumption of GM corn, constituted an unfair trade practice by prohibiting the use of GM corn in tortillas.

The Mexican government publicly disagreed with the ruling, claiming that the three arbitrators had failed to consider the scientific evidence Mexico presented in the yearlong case. But the government chose to comply, rescinding the three specific parts of the decree deemed by the panel to limit future GM corn imports. Still, the government left intact the decree’s measures phasing out the use of the herbicide glyphosate, establishing a protocol for tracking GM corn imports into the country, and banning the cultivation of GM corn in the country.

The constitutional amendment enshrines that last measure in a more permanent manner. While GM corn has faced planting restrictions for more than a decade, the constitutional ban represents an important act of resistance and sovereignty, particularly in light of the flawed decision by the tribunal.”

These actions are designed to raise awareness, influence decision-makers, and create lasting change. We’ve already seen significant victories, but real change happens through collective action. By committing to just three actions each week, you become part of a movement for a healthier planet and a more just food system. Together, we can make an even bigger difference!

1. Take Action: Say No To Synthetic Food!

This week, take a moment to educate yourself about the latest developments in synthetic foods and find actionable steps to advocate for real, organic food systems. Synthetic Biology (SynBio) involves creating genetically engineered bacteria that produce specific compounds used to make synthetic foods like meat, milk, and coffee. These products are often untested, unlabeled, and may pose environmental risks if the engineered bacteria escape the lab. Moreover, the push for synthetic foods overlooks the essential role animals play in regenerative agriculture. By visiting the campaign page, you can stay informed and find ways to advocate for real, organic food systems.

2. Personal Health: Go Barefoot!

As the weather gets warmer, tap into this free and impactful practice for your health! Grounding—walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand—connects your body to the Earth’s natural energy. This simple act may reduce inflammation, relieve pain, improve sleep, lower stress, and support circulation. Learn more here and read the study by Dove Medical Press Limited here.

3. Environment: Soil: A Powerful Climate Solution—And It Starts with You!

Soil is one of our most powerful tools in the fight against climate change. It stores more carbon than all plant life and the atmosphere combined. How we manage and care for our soil can either accelerate global warming—or help reverse it. By shifting our farming and food choices toward regenerative practices, we can restore soil health, draw carbon out of the atmosphere, and build a more resilient food system. Every choice you make—at the store, in your kitchen, or in your garden—can help build soil and restore the planet.

What’s up with that?

The Roundup Costco sells now has an “Exclusive Formula” that Friends of the Earth says contains two ingredients banned in the European Union and is “45 times more toxic” than the glyphosate-based version (a potent carcinogen).

The two pesticides that are banned in the E.U., but sold at Costco in the new Roundup are diquat dibromide and imazapic.

Diquat dibromide is 200 times more toxic than glyphosate.

Diquat was banned in the E.U. in 2020 because of its acute and reproductive toxicity and the grave danger this posed to workers and anyone else who might be exposed to diquat sprays. European Food Safety Authority regulators found that even when workers wore coveralls, gloves, and boots, they were still exposed to three-and-a-half times the maximum acceptable level of diquat.

Diquat is a product of Syngenta, which was bought by ChemChina in 2017, but remains headquartered in Switzerland. It’s manufactured in the U.K. where it’s also banned. Despite the bans, diquat is exported to the U.S. and other countries.

This has been disastrous to the farmers of Brazil who have been plagued by diquat poisoning incidents since 2020 when diquat replaced its close cousin paraquat after that notoriously dangerous weed killer was banned in Brazil. As The Guardian reported, diquat is generally considered less toxic than paraquat, but can still be extremely harmful: exposure can lead to paralysis, blindness, vomiting, irritation, convulsions, organ damage and even death.

Imazapic is the other banned-in-the-E.U. pesticide in the new Roundup formulation sold at Costco. According to a 2003 fact sheet prepared by Caroline Cox for the Journal of Pesticide Reform, “Toxicological problems caused by imazapic and imazapic-containing herbicides in laboratory studies include eye irritation, muscle degeneration, liver damage, anemia, increased blood levels of cholesterol, and a birth defect called rudimentary ribs.”

This does not bode well for people buying Roundup at Costco—who aren’t being warned of the product’s new dangers or how to protect themselves or others.

Tell Costco: Stop Selling Roundup! Costco doesn’t have a publicly available email address, so the best way to submit your feedback is to call your local Costco, or the online store at 1-800-955-2292, or to communicate with them via social media on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. For an easy, one-click action, like and share our posts on Facebook, X and Instagram.

OCA’s Weekly 3 offers three simple, impactful actions each week to drive change in environmental policy, sustainable agriculture, and personal health.

What does it mean to live a good life?

Things such as your home, your neighborhood, your school or workplace, and your friends all matter.

More than 16,000 chemicals are used to produce plastics — and some are silently killing us.

Particularly worrisome is di-2-ethylhexylphthalate, or DEHP, a chemical used to soften plastic products. Colorless and nearly odorless, DEHP is found in everything from shower curtains and shoes to medical tubing and has long been linked to health harms like cancer.

New research indicates the class of chemicals is also causing deaths due to heart disease, particularly in developing countries. According to a peer-reviewed study published last week in The Lancet eBioMedicine, nearly 350,000 people died in 2018 from exposure to DEHP. The research represents the first global survey of cardiovascular mortality from the chemicals and attributes DEHP exposure from plastics to more than 13 percent of all deaths from heart disease among adults aged 55 to 64.

One of the researchers’ most striking findings was a strong geographic disparity in DEHP exposure and related mortality rates. Residents of the Middle East and South Asia, for example, are exposed to up to six times more DEHP than their European counterparts. A greater share of these regions’ cardiovascular deaths was also attributable to the chemicals. Researchers found that in 2018, 10 percent of heart disease-related deaths in the United States and 8 percent in Europe were attributable to DEHP exposure. That figure was as high as 17 percent in the Middle East and South Asia and more than 13 percent in East Asia and the Pacific.

For over a century, scientists believed that only three factors controlled pupil size: light levels, focus distance, and cognitive processes like emotions or mental effort. But groundbreaking research from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet has uncovered a fourth fundamental factor that’s been hiding in plain sight: your breathing rhythm.

But for many Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian people; Vietnamese Americans; and U.S. Vietnam veterans and their descendants, the impacts of the war never ended.

They continue to suffer the devastating consequences of Agent Orange, an herbicide mixture used by the U.S. military that contained dioxin, the deadliest chemical known to humankind.

The United States used Agent Orange as a weapon of war. From 1961-1971, the U.S. military sprayed toxins that contained large quantities of dioxin in order to destroy food supplies and improve visibility for the U.S. military by killing broad swathes of vegetation throughout southern Vietnam.

As a result, many people have been born with congenital anomalies — disabling changes in the formation of the spinal cord, limbs, heart, palate and more. This remains the largest deployment of herbicidal warfare in history.

Washington, D.C., 5 May 2025 (PAHO) — Hand hygiene is one of the most effective and cost-efficient measures to prevent infections in health care settings and to combat antimicrobial resistance. On World Hand Hygiene Day, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) underscores that while medical gloves play a key role in preventing the transmission of infections—particularly in situations involving potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids—they are not a substitute for performing hand hygiene at the appropriate times.

Observed every year on 5 May, this year’s campaign is marked by the slogan “It might be gloves. It’s always hand hygiene.” The message calls attention to the environmental impact of the unnecessary use of gloves and the waste this generates. “For example, nitrile gloves, which were among the most widely used during the pandemic, can take more than 400 years to decompose. This highlights the need for sustainable alternatives and responsible glove use,” said Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, PAHO Director.

According to the Global Report on Infection Prevention and Control 2024 from the World Health Organization (WHO), 17 out of 20 countries (85%) in the Region of the Americas that participated in a 2023–2024 global survey have an active national infection prevention and control (IPC) program. With respect to hand hygiene compliance, 15 countries (75%) have designated it as a key national indicator, an increase from 62.5% in the 2021–2022 period. However, gaps persist in access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in health care facilities across the Region.

Where you work affects your risk of dying by suicide. For example, loggers, musicians and workers in the oil and gas industries have much higher rates of suicide than the rest of the population.

But on the flip side, some professions have very low rates of suicide. One of them is education. National and state data shows that educators in the U.S., including teachers, professors and librarians, are among the least likely to die by suicide.

We’re a team of researchers at the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety at Arizona State University. We manage Arizona’s Violent Death Reporting System, part of a surveillance system sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with counterparts in all 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. We collect data on violent deaths, including suicide, thanks to agreements with local medical examiners and law enforcement.

For much of the 20th century, winter brought an annual ritual to Princeton, New Jersey. Lake Carnegie froze solid, and skaters flocked to its glossy surface. These days, the ice is rarely thick enough to support anybody wearing skates, since Princeton’s winters have warmed about 4 degrees Fahrenheit since 1970. It’s a lost tradition that Grace Liu linked to the warming climate as an undergrad at Princeton University in 2020, interviewing longtime residents and digging through newspaper archives to create a record of the lake’s ice conditions.

“People definitely noticed that they were able to get out onto the lake less,” said Liu, who’s now a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University. “However, they didn’t necessarily connect this trend to climate change.”
