46.

Even as her yard blossomed with black-eyed Susans and milkweed, Melinda Soltys didn’t consider herself a gardener; she just wanted to see more wildlife. After learning how native vegetation improves habitat for the animals she hoped to attract, Soltys grew a haven for birds and butterflies in her front yard. “As soon as you start researching,” she says, “you realize it’s all about the plants.”

 47.
But hers is among the growing number of American households that belong to a homeowners association (HOA). U.S. Census Bureau data show that 84 percent of new, single-family homes sold in 2022 belonged to one of these private entities that collect fees from residents in exchange for services like trash pickup and snow removal. Associations also set rules for what members can do with their property, and in June 2021 Soltys received a letter: The flourishing native species she’d lovingly grown broke the restriction against “weeds.” She would have to rip them out.

 48.
Soltys decided to push back. She tidied up her plantings, but she also partnered with regional environmental nonprofits to help introduce a bill in the Virginia legislature to protect the right to grow native plants in HOA communities. Soltys was inspired by first-in-the-nation legislation passed in nearby Maryland in 2021—born of a like-minded couple’s years-long and costly legal battle with their own HOA—that now serves as a template for other states. Last year, Maine enacted a similar bill, and Minnesota went a step further, requiring not just HOAs but all municipalities to allow natural landscaping.

 102.
It involves two broods, or groups, of periodical cicadas, insects with relatively long life cycles that show up after a certain interval. The Northern Illinois brood spends 17 years underground before surfacing and is known as Brood XIII, while the Great Southern Brood, or Brood XIX, lives underground for 13 years.

 103.
“What’s so stunning is that they’re here all along … but because they’re underground everybody forgets about them,” said cicada expert John Lill, a professor of biology at George Washington University.

 104.
The synchronous dual emergence of these two particular broods, which happens once every 221 years, is underway until June. The next time the two broods appear together, it will be 2245.

 128.
There’s nothing wrong with “humanure” if properly composted. (Although it isn’t allowed in organic and we’re okay with that!)

 129.
The thing that makes sewage sludge so nasty isn’t the human waste, it’s the polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

 130.
This class of highly toxic man-made fluorinated chemicals are used in a variety of products, including waterproof fabric, stain-resistant carpets, nonstick pans, flame retardant furniture, take-out containers, cosmetics and firefighting foam.

 131.
PFAS lasts forever, accumulating in the environment, and it kills. There is scientific evidence that it causes cancer, kidney disease, birth defects, and liver damage, while beating up the immune system.

 132.
The Biden Administration has started to regulate PFAS, putting six PFAS formulations on its list of substances regulated in drinking water and two under its Superfund authority, to shift the costs of cleanup from taxpayers to polluters.

 133.
That’s great, but there are an estimated 12,000 PFAS formulations and an estimated 30,000 PFAS polluters releasing this “devil’s piss” into the environment via wastewater discharged into surface waters and municipal sewage treatment facilities.

 134.
What we need is to ban PFAS, to get it out of our water, out of consumer products, out of the military, out of firefighting, and out of food and farming!

While you might be drawn to your favorite childhood treat, like a Kit Kat or Take 5 bar, you could change your mind when you find out more about how the chocolate was made. Chocolate production, especially mass-produced chocolate from the most prominent brands, has some unsavory practices, including environmental and human rights problems. There are some chocolate facts to take into consideration when choosing between all those bars in the candy aisle.

 165.
As Lela Nargi has reported for FoodPrint, cocoa is among a handful of commodity crops, including coffee, sugarcane and palm oil, that are “grown in the global south by impoverished smallholder farmers with no power in the supply chain. The purchase of these crops by multinational food and beverage corporations — to make your chocolate bars, cookies and more — supports lack of living wages, child/forced/forced child labor, sexual assault, and rampant deforestation.”

 169.
“Recently, we reported that Sen. Durbin is planning on introducing his anti-supplement bill sometime in 2024. This bill would institute “mandatory product listing” (MPL) for supplements. Creating a registry of the supplement industry may sound harmless, but for the reasons we’ve outlined in the past, this policy is a real threat to your supplement access. To help show why, we need only look to our neighbors in the north: Canada. The evolution of the Canadian system shows how additional supplement regulations sought by Sen. Durbin and the FDA lead us down a path where consumers have ever fewer choices because so many products—especially the most efficacious—will be eliminated.

 170.
In the US, supplements are regulated as food; in Canada, they are regulated under the Natural Health Products Regulations as a distinct ‘third’ category, between foods and drugs, requiring pre-market approval. To sell a supplement in Canada, companies must first apply for and obtain a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada (the equivalent of the FDA). To get an NPN, a company must provide extensive information regarding the safety and efficacy of the natural health product.”

 174.
When done properly, organic regenerative farming is the way of the future. It’s a solution to some of the world’s greatest and most complex problems including climate change, food insecurity and the loss of biodiversity. It has the potential to both save us from climate catastrophe, and produce enough food to feed the world in a way that allows humans to live in harmony with nature.

 175.
We need to integrate this green justice and these regenerative solutions messages with the specific issues and concerns that are most important to grassroots constituencies, and then lay out, in everyday language, a strategy that makes people understand that we can actually solve the problems they care about the most, while also solving a host of other pressing problems at the same time. Only by starting from where people are at, and then connecting the dots, can we capture the attention and imagination of a critical mass of the global grassroots and get them to start thinking about how they can participate in our new Movement and new economy.

 181.
“As climate change exacerbates water shortages, water profiteering is making the problem even worse. The barbaric capitalist insistence on treating water as a commodity incentivizes scarcity and hoarding, as well as imposes ever more extreme levels of thirst upon the world’s poor.

 182.
Responding to the threat of profiteers exploiting a water shortage in the western United States, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Ro Khanna recently introduced a bill that would ban trading water as a commodity. Speaking to the press last week, Warren rejected the premise that the water crisis should be a source of profit for ‘the rich and powerful.’ Instead, she said, the bill would ‘protect water from Wall Street speculation and ensure our most essential resources isn’t auctioned off to the highest bidder.’”

 186.
“In recent years, doctors and scientists have studied the gut with renewed interest. Research has revealed that the digestive system is more than just a processing center for the food we eat, and that it has a much bigger effect on our overall health than previously thought. Issues as varied as stubborn weight gain and Parkinson’s disease can be linked to the gut, which means that understanding our digestive system — and, by extension, how it thrives or suffers based on what we eat — is crucial. In a new documentary, Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut, German scientist Giulia Enders partners with colleagues to explain how the gut works — and how to make it work for you.

 187.
How does the gut work?

 188.
For those who need a quick biology refresher: The food we eat travels from the esophagus to the stomach before moving onto the small intestine and then the large intestine. Whatever is left is waste, and it’s expelled as poop. Approximately 70% of our immune system lives in our gut, and those microscopic organisms communicate with our other organs. “Our gut affects our whole body,” neuroscientist John Cryan says in the doc. “The gut really is the second brain.” Many conditions once thought to be determined by one’s genetics may actually be attributable to one’s microbiome.”

“It may be grey outside your window right now, but spring has officially sprung and brighter, lighter days will soon be here. While a cerulean sky and dappled sunlight may be on most Brits’ wish list, a cloudy day is no deterrent to engaging with and enjoying nature fortunately – and the benefits of doing so are well documented. Lower blood pressure, stress levels and anxiety, a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and improved attention and sleep are just some of the health perks from spending time in green and blue spaces.

 194.
We’ve spoken to the experts to get their tips for embracing what nature has to offer this spring. Almost all of their suggestions are free, meaning you don’t have to splash out to reap the rewards. From planting wildflowers to tracking bumblebees, watching the sunrise, to spotting swifts, there’s certain to be something here that reminds you of Mother Nature’s magic.”

 198.
“Many envision the ‘perfect’ American lawn as a lush, uniform green carpet that covers their outdoor space. But beneath this verdant facade lies a complex social history and significant environmental dilemma. The lawns that stretch across the United States, covering an astonishing 40 million acres—an area as expansive as Colorado—embody a tradition deeply rooted in cultural status but fraught with ecological consequences. These perfectly manicured landscapes, while picturesque, now consume around 9 billion gallons of water daily, introduce a myriad of toxins into our ecosystems, and offer scant refuge for the local wildlife that once thrived in these spaces.

 199.
Why then, do we even have lawns? This blog navigates the origins of lawn culture, from its aristocratic beginnings in Europe to its emblematic—and at time insidious—role in American suburbia. As we peel back the layers of tradition and confront the unsettling reasons our culture cherishes open green space to begin with, we invite you to reassess the allure of a lawn—to consider instead landscaping informed by a bright future, rather than a dark history.”

his father and every one of his friends’ fathers worked. He always knew he wanted to leave where he grew up, a place known as “cancer alley”. He earned a scholarship to both Rice University and Trinity College of Cambridge University in England. As he found himself in Europe, in 1968, his world view was blown apart as he saw students rising up in Paris against the Vietnam war. He was inspired and when he returned home he joined the anti-war movement here in the US. The fact that 3 million people died in that war remained unfathomable to him for the rest of his life; he felt that young people really needed to know more about what happened during that time and how the protest movement helped to stop that tragic war. He was proud of being part of the counterculture, he loved wearing a rasta hat in the airport because he said people smiled at him. He played guitar had a beautiful singing voice and loved Dylan, John Prine, Van Morrison, and Lennon.

 326.
He was a scholar foremost, he devoured books and I suppose was a news junkie in his areas of study, some of which he coined in our OCA byline “Campaigning for Health, Justice, Regeneration, Democracy and Peace”. He researched a wide range of issues, but made it his mission to work with others to break down silos between our individual heartfelt causes, urging us all to connect the dots and unite the movement. He often reiterated the importance of working with people we may not agree with on all issues, to claim our power and do what we can to make a change in a world we are at odds with on so many fronts.

 327.
He had a gift in both his speaking and writing to take complicated topics and make them easy to grasp, never using a notebook or powerpoint, the facts and figures would roll off his tongue and he was like a preacher on the pulpit passionately sharing the good news and bad amidst sometimes scary scenarios. Whether on stage or with his written words always emphasizing, we have the power to turn things around!

 328.

 329.
Most people know Ronnie as a strong, passionate strategist and fighter who would never back down in the quest for truth and justice in our work. His legacy will live on in his extensive body of written work, and for all he has done to fight against the corporations and government that is profiting off the suffering of people. I am honored to have worked side by side with him helping to build the OCA together with our community of activists. I am proud to take on the role of National Director of the OCA and work with our dedicated team to continue our mission and work. I thought it would be nice to share a bit of the story on the personal side of his life many people never saw.

 330.
As a lifelong partner in both our work and family life Ronnie inspired me, took care of me, encouraged me to be the best person I could be. I remember telling my friends that I knew in 1981, that he was the one I would spend the rest of my life with because he had the most infectious laugh ever and he made me more happy than I could have imagined. Over the years I discovered the depth of true love and thanked my lucky stars for how fortunate I was to spend my life with someone so loving, generous, compassionate, responsible, curious, dedicated, grateful, fun, sentimental, fiery, romantic and funny! He was a wonderful father and often said it was the greatest joy of his life to raise our son Adrian who changed our world in so many ways, as children do.

 331.
He loved the tradition of family gatherings and any kind of celebration, and in all of our years together, I don’t remember once where he said, “I’m not up for it, go ahead without me.” He always wanted to be in the full stream of life, whether it be our after work daily summer swims in the Baptism River in Minnesota or our long daily hikes at the farm school in Mexico or a gathering of community, family or friends. For him, besides his passion for learning, what fed his core was being close to nature and he made it a priority to spend as much time as possible in the northern woods, desert or in the water of wild places. He always came back from the many conferences he attended brimming with news of how great it was to connect with and learn from other activists and friends full of inspiration for the next steps in campaigning.

 332.
I never stopped being struck with his manners and consideration, almost always coming home with a cheery greeting, good story, bearing flowers or suggestions for an outing and when pulling out the guitar to sing, he would start with a love song directed to me before launching into the protest and folk music for me or people gathered.

 333.
Ronnie was always confident in my abilities and respectful of my point of view. Our personal lives and work were interdependent by choice because we loved our work. There was always so much to discuss and learn, often more action than what we really wanted, given the ups and downs of running non-profit organizations, but we often said, “At least it’s never boring!” Whether working on messaging of controversial issues, struggles with fundraising, mistakes made, victories to celebrate, building friendships with our team and amazing activists in the movement, it all kept our lives vital and fulfilling.

 334.
One thing he often said to me when I would get concerned about how we were going to manage finances, censorship, criticism or conflict in the world of running an organization like OCA, he would say, “sweetie, we’re doing the best we can and that’s all we can do”.

 335.
Shortly before Ronnie died, he told some close friends “I did good”. I know he had faith in himself and that he knew he had done all he could in this lifetime to make this world a healthier, more peaceful place for generations to come. I guess that is as much as we can ask for when we leave this earthly plane; to know in our hearts we have done all we can in this life with the time we are given.

 336.
So, signing off with a wish for all reading this, to be able to know you are doing the “best you can and that you are doing good”. Ronnie’s spirit is right there beside you in your journey to do good in this lifetime.

 337.
Thank you for all your support and I will keep on fighting the good fight as National Director of the OCA with the help of our talented and dedicated staff and all of you!

 373.

The State Department cancelled today’s briefing. If mass arrests and repression had taken place in universities in Iran or Russia they would go on and on about it. But now, they don’t want to talk at all. …

 374.
It was fitting in a way that Peter Daszak, the deceitful head of EcoHealth Alliance, finally testified before Congress about Covid origins just as “security” forces around the country were attacking students peacefully protesting against a genocide.

 375.
Daszak’s testimony seemed poorly attended by members of Congress and got little buzz on X/Twitter. The insane deceits around Covid origins are largely in the rearview mirror and of course people are rightly focusing on Gaza protests, but it’s quite convenient timing.

 376.
As I’ve repeatedly noted, had those Covid deceits, many of which were evident in real time, been understood by the global public in early 2020, you would have seen a great mass movement against the creation of deadly pathogens (effectively biowarfare, euphemistically called “gain of function” lab work).

 377.
As long time readers will know, I was one of the few people associated with the left who raised the alarm, writing a series of pieces on Daszak and his lies, the reality of continued biowarfare, the reality of lab origin outbreaks and investigating other outbreaks with connections to the Covid outbreak, like Ebola 2014.

 397.

According to a new analysis by Consumer Reports, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pesticide Data Program (PDP) Annual Summary has once again failed to accurately portray the safety of some of the most commonly sold fruits and vegetables in the United States. A review of seven years of PDP data show that 20% of the foods tested pose a “high risk” to the public and 12 specific commodities are so dangerous that children or pregnant people should not eat more than one serving per day, according to Consumer Reports analysis. Consumer Reports contend that U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) pesticide residue tolerances are too lenient. To better evaluate potential health risks associated with various foods, Consumer Reports applied stricter residue limits than the EPA tolerances (see here for CR’s analytical methodology). Notably, USDA certified organic food products are not permitted to be produced with the pesticides identified by the report. Pesticide residues found in organic, with rare exception, are a function of the off-target chemical-intensive agriculture pollution through pesticide drift, water contamination, or background soil residues.
