20.
Walker is one of the top defenders in the 2025 NFL Draft.

For years, Dont’a Hightower was the gold standard of linebacker play in New England and the epitome of what former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was looking for in a defender. A first-round draft pick in 2012, he developed into a cornerstone for the team due to his leadership, communication skills, positional versatility and athleticism.

 21.
The days of Hightower and Belichick are long gone. And yet, new head coach Mike Vrabel might be in a position to add his own version of the three-team Super Bowl winner in this year’s draft. His name is Jalon Walker.

 31.
Accolades: Butkus Award (2024), Second-team All-SEC (2024), Third-team All-American (2024)

 32.
The son of former Catawba College head coach Curtis Walker, Jalon was a multi-sport athlete at Salisbury High School in North Carolina who also excelled in basketball and track. He eventually focused on football and was listed as a 5-star recruit by some outlets. Receiving scholarship offers from most of the noteworthy schools in the country, he decided to join Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs in 2022.

 33.
A core special teamer and part-time edge/off-ball linebacker hybrid as a freshman, he increased his defensive role during his sophomore season. Walker truly broke out as a junior in 2024, when he primarily aligned off the ball and ended up winning the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. He followed the statistically best season of his college career by declaring his intention to forgo his final year of eligibility and turn pro.

 34.
Draft profile

 35.
Expected round: 1 (top 15) | Consensus big board: No. 11 | Patriots meeting: N/A

 36.
Strengths: Walker has “future defensive leader” written all over him. Growing up in a football environment prepared him for such a role, and contributed to him being named a captain at Georgia as a junior and to the SEC leadership council. On the field, he is deserving of this label due to his smooth and explosive moving skills: he combines an elite first step as a pass rusher with sideline-to-sideline range when used off the ball; he also translates his speed into power at both positions.

 37.
On the edge, his burst combined with upper-body strength and a powerful punch puts offensive linemen into trouble from the get-go. Even if they recover, his hand placement and quick reaction allow him to have a variety of counters ready or at the very least get his hands up to bat down passes. He also has the lateral quickness to be used on line games and the foundational base to develop as a run defender.

 38.
Off the ball, Walker does not shy away from coming downhill and leaving his mark in the running game. He diagnoses well and reacts quickly and decisively without running himself out of position. The burst he uses to create stress on the edge also allows him to effectively blitz from the second level. Walker also can shed blocks both off the ball and when pursuing from the backside.

 39.

 40.

 41.
If I have Georgia LB Jalon Walker in my defense, I'm alternating between EDGE and spinner, because he can be dominant at both. But I want him moving forward to the guy with the ball at all times. pic.twitter.com/OCdZanMxF7
— Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) March 31, 2025
 42.

 43.
 44.
 45.

 46.
Weaknesses: Playing both on the edge and off the ball at Georgia contributed to Walker still being a somewhat raw player in both areas. On the edge, his attack seems more instinctual than driven by a concrete plan of attacks and counters; he has shown he can be successful but might need a better feel for his opponents and how to use his hands against them at the next level. Off the ball, his coverage needs refinement especially if teams want to use him in man-to-man situations.

 47.
Another problem with Walker is his build. Measuring 6-foot-1, 243 pounds at the Scouting Combine with 32-inch arms, he lacks ideal size and length to play on the edge full-time — a usage that might be his best in the NFL. He has some tweener-element to him: he is an edge in a linebacker’s body.

 48.
Patriots preview

 49.
What would be his role? As noted above, Walker projects best as an edge rather than an off-ball linebacker. That does not mean he won’t be able to fill the latter role at a starter level, but his outlook is cleaner when aligned on the line and allowed to use his elite explosiveness against offensive linemen. In New England, Walker would likely start off as a pass rush specialist to complement current starter/early-down specialist Anfernee Jennings.

 50.
What is his growth potential? Among the youngest players in the draft, Walker has all the tools to become a Pro Bowl-caliber player, especially on the edge. To reach his full potential, however, the 21-year-old needs to become more technically refined and add more of a run defense element to his game. If he can do that, and also develop off the ball, he projects as a true three-down chess piece — somebody can be moved all over the front seven and give his defensive coordinator a player to create and exploit mismatches.

 51.
Does he have positional versatility? Walker was used as a true move linebacker in college, regularly switching his alignments from the edge to second level. It might take some time before he will be used that way in the NFL, but he has a versatile background and skillset to develop into a do-it-all defender. He furthermore has experience on five special teams units, even though his kicking game role will likely decrease the more defensive action he will see.

 52.
Why the Patriots? Ever since returning to New England to serve as head coach, Mike Vrabel has spoken about multiplicity. Even though he initially projects better as an edge than an off-ball linebacker, Walker is an intriguing player in that regard and somebody who seems tailor-made for a Vrabel defense: not only is he versatile, he also is a proven leader and somebody who fulfills the new-look Patriots’ speed requirements. As noted above, he could very well become Vrabel’s version of a Dont’a Hightower-type operator.

 53.
Why not the Patriots? Besides the simple fact that the Patriots might value other positions or prospects early in the draft — Walker could be more of a trade-back option — the team also might be turned off by his size and the uncertainty whether his versatility will translate to the NFL. In addition, there is an uncertainty about his development as a pass rusher that New England just might not be comfortable with.

 54.
One-sentence verdict: Walker is not a clean prospect due to his lack of size and uncertain projection, but he still possesses the upside to become an impact player who would make a fine addition to New England’s defense after trading down from No. 4 into the early teens.

 72.

 73.
 74.
The Patriots defense is set to play violent football under its new coaching staff.

Under head coach Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, the New England Patriots defense is set to look different in 2025.

 75.
The mindset of that unit is clear: play with violence.

 76.
“Any style that we’ve been a part of, the unwavering violence is a huge part of that,” inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr said Friday. “Being aggressive, being violent, not turning down blocks. Having a good toolbox of tools to defeat the offensive player, but it’s not just always finesse. There is some physicality there and some violence. We’re huge into guys that don’t mind playing violent football.”

 77.
In addition to the violent philosophy, schematic changes from Vrabel and Williams will help their defense be more aggressive. That especially rings true along the defensive line, where the duo predominantly ran four-down fronts during their time together in Tennessee.

 78.
Under these looks, the Titans primarily one-gapped against the run compared to New England’s typical two-gap system which will now allow defenders to get upfield quicker to cause disruption.

 79.
The scheme change should suit a number of defensive line positively, including big free agent addition Milton Williams, who was at his best as a penetrating three-technique in Philadelphia.

 80.
“The great thing with Milton, he adds obviously what you see on tape — like a level of violence and explosiveness,” defensive line coach Clint McMillan said. “Has an ability to affect the quarterback. Everyone kind of got to see that, especially in the Super Bowl, but you know he just adds another piece for us just to help us play good defense, help us continue to try to build a front and limit points. So just excited to have another talented piece.”

 81.
A more violent approach could also get the best out of third-year defender Keion White, who was vocal near the end of last season with his displeasure about how things unfolded in his sophomore season.

 82.
White will now work under outside linebacker coach Mike Smith, who comes with plenty of experience coaching bigger rushers such as Tamba Hali, Rashawn Gary, Justin Houston, etc.

 83.
“I like big rushers. I like big athletic rushers, and I think he fits that mold,” Smith said Friday. “I think with guys like him — and he’s got some learning to do, like we all do. When you’re done learning, you’re done. But, guys like that, you can move across the line, you can do different things with them and I’m just really excited to put my hands on him.

 84.
“Love the way he plays. You can tell football means something to him when you talk to him. He’s a serious guy, man, and meaner than a rattlesnake — I like that about him. He’s the type of guy, and I’ve had all different kinds of sizes and stuff, but I think he’s got a good, good future.”

 103.
 104.
Our offseason countdown continues with the No. 8 Best Patriots Moment of 2024.

Not much happening around New England Patriots Nation right now, and we’re still a week or two away from seriously turning our attention to the 2025 NFL Draft. So, this is a good week to bang out another moment on our offseason countdown of the Top 10 Patriots Moments of 2025:

 105.
The list so far:

 106.
10. Jerod Mayo out, Mike Vrabel in.
9. Drake Maye hits Austin Hooper for a 38-yard TD on 4th-and-15 against the Miami Dolphins.

 107.
I have a standing rule when it comes to these offseason countdowns: if you set a Patriots record, you automatically earn a spot on the list. So I’ll be honoring that today at Number 8.

 108.
8. Joey Slye nails a 63-yard field goal to close out the half against the San Francisco 49ers.

 109.
If you completely forgot that the Patriots even played the 49ers this season, I certainly don’t blame you; there’s almost nothing worth remembering from that game from a Patriots standpoint. Jacoby Brissett threw for 168 yards on 32 attempts with a touchdown, a pick, and a whopping six sacks. Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 43 yards on 13 carries with a long of only 13 yards. The leading receiver on the day was Antonio Gibson with three catches for 67 yards, with 50 of those yards coming on one reception. David Andrews left the game with a shoulder injury, never to return.

 110.
San Francisco cruised to a 30-13 victory that dropped the Patriots to 1-3 on the year and started raising serious questions as to what the hell this team was doing.

 111.
The one bright spot from this debacle came just before halftime, courtesy of a weak 49rs punt from their own 8-yard line, returned 11 yards by Marcus Jones to the San Francisco 39. With the Patriots trailing 20-0 and set to kick off to start the third quarter, they desperately needed some point to even have a prayer of staying in this game. With 38 seconds left and one timeout, there was a decent chance of at least getting out of the second quarter with a field goal.

 112.
1st-and-10 quickly became 2nd-and-10 when Brissett threw one in the dirt in front of JaMycal Hasty. 2nd-and-10 quickly became 3rd-and-22 when Brissett was sacked for a 12-yard loss on the following play. Any hope of a touchdown was gone, and so on 3rd-and-22 the Patriots called an off-tackle run to Hasty to try and get some yards back. What started as 1st-and-10 on the SF 39 finished as 4th-and-16 from the SF 45. Four plays, negative six yards.

 113.
With only three seconds left in the half, the Patriots sent Joey Slye out to attempt a 63-yard field goal. Why not? If the 49ers blocked it and took it to the house, it wouldn’t make that much of a difference, and there was at least a shot of getting some points on the board. Slye had a pretty big leg and had made a 61-yarder just the year before as a member of the Washington Commanders. Not really much to lose at this point.

 114.
Slye hit a line drive right down the middle, barely clearing the goalposts and putting the Patriots on the board. With the kick, Slye beat Stephen Gostkowski’s record of a 62-yard field goal, which he hit against Oakland back in 2017. The kick wouldn’t have set the all-time record of 66 yards, held by Justin Tucker, but it was enough for this game. 49ers 20, Patriots 3.

 115.
Joey Slye would also make a 54-yard attempt early in the 4th quarter to make it a 27-13 game, but it didn’t matter; this game as a whole was a complete disaster. However, with Slye now gone to the Titans, I’m happy to show him some love on this list. He was a serviceable kicker who, at times was New England’s only offensive weapon. And with this 63-yard kick, he has earned himself a spot in Patriots history for the foreseeable future.

 116.
Check out the kick here. He didn’t think he’d get that with the Patriots due to Drake Maye and Josh Dobbs. Now, he gets his wish and has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

 237.
 238.
This week’s mailbag explores your mock drafts.

The 2025 NFL Draft is officially less than three weeks away. So, instead of the usual questions submitted and answered in our #PostPulpit mailbag, we will be going through a batch of your own mock drafts — where we hopefully will comment on a vast majority of prospects, trades, and all sorts of scenarios.

 239.
Also note that the majority of mocks were submitted before the Joe Milton trade, which saw New England swap pick 217 for No. 171. With that, let’s get into some New England Patriots mocks.

 240.
#4 Travis Hunter CB/WR
#38 Aireontae Ersery OT
#69 Jayden Higgins WR
#77 Bradyn Swinson EDGE
#106 Anjani Cornelius OT
#144 Ollie Gordon RB
#217 Que Robinson EDGE
#220 Tonka Hemingway DT
#238 Garvin Bartholomew TE - jrroos

 241.
You got a fan in this one, jrroos. Hunter (or Carter) is the dream scenario atop the draft. One of the top two elite prospects in this draft who I believe could become a dominant wide receiver with his athleticism and ball skills — giving Drake Maye a great partner to grow with.

 242.
On Day Two, Ersery is a big bodied left tackle who can get out in space when needed. He’d probably be the top option at the position at this point. I’m also a big fan in Bradyn Swinson off the edge and think he’s flying under the radar in a strong edge class. With Hunter in the picture, I might go elsewhere than Higgins at that point although I do like the player.

 243.
Rounding out Day Three, I like the positions address. More depth on the lines and some development players at running back and tight end. Ollie Gordon had a down 2024 season and Combine but I can’t quite quit his 2023 season. Will be interesting to see if he can get back to that at the next level.

 244.

 245.
Round 1: Pick #4: Travis Hunter: WR/CB: Colorado
Round 2: Pick #38: Aireontae Ersery: OT: Minnesota
Round 3: Pick #69: T.J. Sanders: DT: South Carolina
Round 3: Pick #83: Kyle Williams: WR: Washington State
Round 4: Pick # 125: Jackson Slater: OG: Sacramento State
Round 5: Pick #144: Dylan Sampson: RB: Tennessee
Round 7: Pick #217: Zach Frazier: CB: UTSA
Round 7: Pick #220: Jalin Conyers: TE: Texas Tech
Round 7: Pick #238: Ben Sauls: K: Pittsburgh - mathblaster97

 246.
Similar start as the last one so we’ll jump into round three.

 247.
Sanders is similar to Milton Williams as an undersized three-tech who can get after the quarterback. He could join the rotation and perhaps be what Williams was in the Eagles defensive line rotation the past few seasons. Kyle Williams has also seen his stock skyrocket in recent weeks putting him perhaps into day two territory. He’s quick off the line of scrimmage and creates easy separation. The Patriots held Williams on a visit. I’m a fan.

 248.
To Day Three, Slater had an impressive Senior Bowl as an athletic, versatile interior lineman. I like Dylan Sampson as the Patriots look for a speed back, but believe he’s likely off the board inside the top-100. Kicker is also an underrated need entering the draft and the lefty Sauls is one of the few with cold weather experience — if that is a trait they are still prioritizing.

 249.

 250.
Assuming no Hunter, no trade

 251.
1(4), Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas
2(38), Elic Ayomanor, WR, Stanford
3(69), Elijah Arroyo, TE, Miami
3(77), Charles Grant, OT, William and Mary
4(105), David Walker, LB/ED, Central Arkansas
5(144), Jaydon Blue, RB, Texas
7(217), Robert Longerbeam, CB, Rutgers
7(220), Cam Jackson, DT, Florida
7(238), Xavier Truss, OL, Georgia - wrw921

 252.
Not a huge fan of Banks at this spot. If he falls back into a trade up range different story. Going tackle here, though, I’d rather go Campbell or Membou. I like Ayomanor’s game but there is some overlap with Ja’Lynn Polk which may not make using a second round pick on the player worthwhile.

 253.
Good set of athletes in round three. Arroyo is an explosive tight end who can be a seam threat for Drake Maye while Grant is an intriguing developmental tackle out of a small school. Grant is an absolute freak athlete who didn’t even start playing football until his junior year of high school as he was a wrestler.

 254.
As for day three, another productive small school player in David Walker, whose a powerful more compact player who dominated at Central Arkansas. Blue fits the mold of the speed running back Robert Kraft discussed at the owners meetings. He had some fumbling issues last year but is a player McDaniels could use well.

 255.

 256.
4 - Will Campbell, LSU, OT
38 - Jack Sawyer, Ohio St, Edge
69 - Jack Bech, TCU, WR
77 - Ozzy Trapilo, BC, OT
106 - Devin Neal, Kansas, RB
144 - Mitchell Evans, ND, TE
217 - Connor Colby, Iowa,OG
220 - Cody Lindenberg, Minn, LB
238 - Rylie Mills, ND, DL - VinnieBoombatz71

 257.
Talk about a draft full of Mike Vrabel type of players with Campbell, Sawyer, Bech and Trapilo. I am not a fan of Sawyer that high as his game is all about power with a below average athletic profile. Bech is a physical slot receiver who can move around the formation and move the chains. But, he may be repetitive to what New England already has in their room.

 258.
Trapilo feels almost bound to be a Patriot as Vrabel begins to build the pipeline from Boston College to Foxboro. Offensive line coach Doug Marrone was in Chestnut Hill last season and Trapilo could have the versatility to play both tackle spots.

 259.
On day three, Devin Neal has good feet out of the backfield and can play all three downs due to his pass catching ability. I would be wary of his collegiate workload as he amassed over 800 touches. Now two years removed from an ACL tear, Evans could be a good buy-low candidate at tight end who also brings an upgrade as a run blocker over anyone on the current roster.

 260.

 261.
Post-Joe-Milton-Trade Mock Draft for Pats.

 262.
Draft Thesis: Pats need blue-chip plus-starters who fit their scheme. LT, dominance depth at DT, shifty WR.

 263.
Mock Draft:

 264.
1-4 (trade to New Orleans for 1-9, 2-40) no pick.
1-9 Shemar Stewart, Edge
1-24 (From Minn. for 2-38, 3-77 and 7-217). Josh Simmons, LT
2-40 Aireontae Ersery, OT
3-69 Jaylin Noel, WR
4-106 CJ West, DT
5-144 Andres Borregales, K
5-?? (from Dallas) Dont’e Thornton, WR
7-238 Jaylin Lane, WR - WannaBePatsGM

 265.
Some new names on here after a trade down from No. 4 with the Saints, who are a logical partner with them potentially in the QB market. I’d probably prefer other defenders at this point, but it’s impossible to ignore Stewart’s elite athletic profile. While the production did not match in college, you’d hope Vrabel and Terrell Williams would unlock him moving forward.

 266.
The move back up for a tackle is another logical one and Simmons, who put out some of the best pure left tackle tape for Ohio State before suffering a season-ending injury. If that’s the move, not sure you need to double dip at the position with Ersey unless the medicals for Simmons are concerning.

 267.
I’m a fan of all three receivers here, but doubt they walk away with that many in the draft as the depth chart is already crowded. Borregales could also be the best kicker in the draft but I wouldn’t use anything better than a seventh rounder at the position.

 268.

 269.
Trade: #4 to New Orleans for #9, 71, 93, 2026 2nd

 270.
Trade: #38 + 71 + 2026 4th to Minnesota for #24

 271.
9- Jalon Walker LB/Edge
24- Josh Simmons OT
69- Harold Fannin Jr. TE
77- Savion Williams WR
93- Anthony Belton OT
106- Dylan Sampson RB
144- JJ Peagues DT
217- Mello Dotson CB
220- Nick Nash WR
238- Cooper Mays C - Sdpatsfan84

 272.
A similar set up as the previous draft with a trade down and then up to target defense and Josh Simmons. If they move down, Walker is one of the more preferred defensive options. He can play in the middle of the field and move down on the line of scrimmage as a pass rusher — in somewhat of a Dont’a Hightower role.

 273.
The Fannin — Williams duo is very boom or bust while Belton would be a solid mid-round o-line addition would can provide some interior versatility. J.J. Pegues is fun. Give that man some fullback snaps.

 293.
 294.
NFL Draft season is underway, and the Patriots will be quite busy.

Even though their scouting department only underwent minor changes since last season, the New England Patriots of 2025 are still a different team than they were a year ago. Incoming head coach Mike Vrabel, after all, is expected to have a more prominent role in building the squad than his predecessor, Jerod Mayo.

 295.
One big part of that is, obviously, the NFL Draft. Until the event in late April, the Patriots — led by Vrabel and EVP of player personnel Eliot Wolf — will be conducting interviews, working out prospects, inviting them for a finite number of pre-draft visits, and in general try to get as complete a picture as possible. It remains to be seen what this process eventually leads to, but there will be plenty of news to report.

 296.
In order to find out who the Patriots have already spoken to or worked out thus far, please make sure to bookmark this regularly-updated pre-draft tracker. We will have all contact listed to the best of our knowledge.

 606.

 607.
 608.
Farmer is the 12th player to visit with the Patriots this pre-draft cycle.

If their list of pre-draft visits is any indication, the New England Patriots should be expected to add to their defensive line later this month. Of their twelve known so-called 30 visits, five have involved prospects at either the edge or the interior of the D-line.

 609.
Among the latter group is the latest addition to the list. Joshua Farmer, a two-year starter at Florida State, will visit the Patriots before the draft.

 610.
“I’ve been at the airport constantly,” Farmer told The Draft Network. “I’ve done a bunch of visits and I have a lot more coming up. I have visits with the Texans, Patriots, Giants, and Steelers, to name a few of them. Those are in-person visits, and I have more of them coming.”

 611.
A three-star recruit out of high school, Farmer redshirted during his 2021 true freshman season at FSU and served as a rotational option up front in his second season in the program. By 2023, he had established himself as a starter and never looked back: he registered a combined 9 sacks and 46 total quarterback pressures over that 25-game span.

 612.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder also has extensive experience against the run. Leaving college as a two-time All-SEC selection — second team 2023, honorable mention 2024 — he projects as a potential Day 2 selection in this month’s draft.

 613.
The Patriots’ defensive tackle group is currently led by Christian Barmore and Milton Williams, with Keion White and Khyiris Tonga also part of the top group. They previously also had likely top 10 pick Mason Graham out of Michigan in town for a 30 visit.

 633.
New England’s offseason program begins at Gillette Stadium on April 7.

The 2025 offseason program is now penciled in for the New England Patriots.

 634.
Head coach Mike Vrabel’s roster will reconvene at Gillette Stadium for the start of voluntary workouts on April 7. From there, the spring schedule ramps up over the course of nine weeks.

 635.
Ten sessions of organized team activities are on deck before the gap between mandatory minicamp and training camp arrives.

 636.
And so is a voluntary veteran minicamp, which new coaching staffs are entitled to hold in advance of April 24, when the NFL draft gets underway. This year, the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets will do the same around the league.

 637.
The tentative dates are as follows in Foxborough, per Thursday’s announcement from the NFL:

 638.

 639.

 640. First day: April 7

 641.

 642. Voluntary minicamp: April 22-24

 643.

 644. Organized team activities: May 19-20, May 22, May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3, June 5

 645.

 646. Mandatory minicamp: June 9-11

 647.

 648.
The offseason program, featured in Article 21 of the NFL and NFL Players Association’s collective bargaining agreement, consists of three phases.

 649.
The first phase spans the initial two weeks of the program and limits activities to meetings, strength and conditioning as well as physical rehabilitation.

 650.
The second phase spans the next three weeks of the program. It allows on-field workouts to include individual or group instruction and drills, “perfect play drills,” and drills and plays with offensive players lining up opposite offensive players and defensive players lining up opposite defensive players. But at a walkthrough pace with no live contact and no team drills between the offense and defense permitted.

 651.
Then it’s on to the third phase — OTA sessions and mandatory minicamp — which cover the final four weeks of the spring calendar. Clubs may conduct 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills at this point, yet full pads and live contact will not return until training camp.
