What does it mean to be a refugee in today’s “global village”? Rain in a Dry Land provides eye-opening answers as it chronicles the fortunes of two Somali Bantu families, transported by relief agencies from years of civil war and refugee life to Springfield, Massachusetts and Atlanta, Georgia. As the newcomers confront racism, poverty and 21st-century culture shock, the film captures their efforts to survive in America and create a safe haven for their war-torn families. Their poetry, humor and amazing resilience show us our own world through new eyes. A co-production with the Independent Television Service (ITVS).

Maid in America

Description from the PBS site:

Housekeeper. Nanny. Maid. Surrogate mother. Such are the many roles of las domésticas—undocumented workers who came to America in search of a better life and found themselves scrubbing toilets and setting tables, working long hours for little pay in private homes.

Most have no health insurance, no driver license, no pension and no recourse when it comes to employment injustices. They cook meals they could never afford, clean houses they could only dream of owning and care for strangers’ children when their own children are thousands of miles away. Deportation is a constant fear. And still they come to the United States by the thousands in hopes of a better life for themselves and their families.

MAID IN AMERICA is an intimate, eye-opening look at the lives of las domésticas, as seen through the eyes of Eva, Telma and Judith: three Latina immigrants, each with a very different story, who work as nannies and housekeepers in Los Angeles, California. Filmmakers Anayansi Prado and Kevin Leadingham followed their subjects for several years, and their cameras caught some of the most intimate moments of these women’s lives, both on and off the job.

video about Willets Point redevelopment

Thinking about gentrification...

 100.

 101.

 102.

 103. According to the MPI:

 104. The United States has formally removed 3.7 million noncitizens since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was established in 2003, a record pace of deportations. An examination of the dataset of all removals effectuated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) between fiscal 2003-2013 offers unique insights and lessons. Migration Policy Institute (MPI) analysis of the DHS data and what it says about major changes to the U.S. deportation system is unveiled in the reportDeportation and Discretion: Reviewing the Record and Options for Change. The report and discussion provide a detailed description of formal removals from the United States, including the previous immigration and criminal records of deportees, as well as their country of origin, gender, length of residence in the United States, and other demographic characteristics. The report provides answers to key questions about immigration enforcement: who is being removed, where are noncitizens being apprehended, how are they being removed, and how are DHS’s current enforcement priorities reflected in enforcement outcomes. With the Obama administration considering action to limit removals of certain unauthorized immigrants, the report also offers a timely assessment of how changes to enforcement priorities could affect future deportations. Discussion at the event focuses on MPI’s insights from ICE’s removals dataset, obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request by The New York Times, as well as the work done by the Government Accountability Office in this area. This event offers a unique opportunity to review the past decade-plus of deportations and determine what lessons can be learned for future policy and possible administrative action.

This blog was one way, but I have a sneaking suspicion that students don't really read the substantive posts available here...I've also considered creating a shared "class bibliography" project using Cite-u-Like or Zotero. The idea is that there must be a way to quickly and easily share articles recent articles that we may read regularly, but that students don't see. In this way it's akin to enlarging their circle of resources. Of course, we could just add students to our social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, but I'm not one of those instructors who is comfortable sharing my Facebook information with my students and sometimes I take long breaks from Twitter. So at present, I'm playing with Flipboard. I create my own "magazine" around a particular class I'm teaching- Stats or Migration- and put articles that I think are interesting and worthwhile reading. Here's a look:
108.

 109.

 110. View my Flipboard Magazine.
111. I can see two major things missing: 1) unlike a blog, there is little commentary attached to the article unless I want to make comment to the article and 2) I imagine the magazine might start to get unwieldy when there are a lot of articles but no Table of Contents. In short, there's a lot less organizational tools in Flipboard than in a blog or even things such as Pocket. Still, the idea that if enough students are reading the articles and commenting on them, I can imagine it may get pretty interesting...

how to review your test results in Bb

To access feedback and grade information, select the test in the content area or use My Grades. 171.

 172. In a spate of recent cases across the country, American citizens have been confined in local jails after federal immigration agents, acting on flawed information from Department of Homeland Security databases, instructed the police to hold them for investigation and possible deportation.

 173.

 174. Americans said their vehement protests that they were citizens went unheard by local police officers and jailers for days, with no communication with federal immigration agents to clarify the situation. Any case where an American is held, even briefly, for immigration investigation is a potential wrongful arrest because immigration agents lack legal authority to detain citizens.

 176. In recent years, the refrain, "China owns us (the United States)" has become a common refrain. I often hear this comment from students and in everyday social encounters. A casual perusal of popular news media seems to reinforce this line of thinking. However, I think such arguments reflect a subtext of racism and insecurity more than reality. As we watch small pockets of immense wealth emerge in China combined with the insecurity of declining American wealth and influence, we are seeing a revival of the "yellow peril" syndrome that was so much a part of western demonization of China in the past.

 177.

 178.

 179.

 180. To be clear, I am not suggesting that concerns about environmental destruction as China industrializes, overpopulation, or declining manufacturing in the US are not serious issues. Rather, I suggest that we have to pay careful attention to how questions and arguments are framed so that they do not demonize an entire people.

 181.

 182.

 183.

 184. To put things into context about whether "China owns us," consider the following statistics about poverty in China. By looking more closely at the demographics and finances of the whole nation, we can better understand the reality of poverty in China.
185.

 186.

 187.

 188.

 189.

 190.
200 million people in China live below the international poverty line of $1.25/day.[i]

 191.
468 million people in China live with under $2/day.[ii] By contrast, Sub-Saharan Africa has 380 million people who live with less than $1.25/day.[iii]

 192.
55% of China's population lives in the countryside.[iv]

 193.
China is ranked #99 in the world for GDP per capita, which is behind El Salvador (#92), Albania (#94) and Namibia (#98).[v]

 194.
China ranks #103 among countries for infant mortality, behind Albania (#91), Nicaragua (#98) and Samoa (#102). [vi]

 195.
The poorest 40% of people in China earn 16% of China's income, while the richest 20% of people in China earn 48% of the national income.[vii]

 196.
According to the World Association of NGO's (WANGO), there are 63 NGO's operating in China. By comparison, there are 3284 in Africa, 3605 in South & Southeast Asia, 882 in Latin America and 652 in the Middle East.[viii]

 197.
According to WANGO, each NGO in Africa serves about 300,000 people, while each NGO in China serves about 30 million people.[ix]

 198.

 199. Meanwhile, Shang-Jin Wei, Professor of Economics at Columbia University, argues that the wide gender balance in China also contributes to the imbalance of trade between China and and other countries such as the U.S[xiv]
200.

 201.
The Congressional-Executive Commission on China confirmed in 2010 a report that some local governments are specifically targeting migrant workers for forced abortions.[x]

 202.
A surplus of men leads to higher savings rates as well as an increased labor supply, which in turn causes the exchange rate of the Chinese yuan to be much lower than in economies with balanced gender ratios. Empirically, those economies with a high sex ratio tend to have a low real exchange rate, beyond what can be explained by the Balassa-Samuelson effect, financial underdevelopment, dependence ratio, and exchange rate regime classifications. As a result, the Chinese yuan is only undervalued by 2% to 8%, since the surplus of men is driving the undervaluing most heavily.[xi]

 203.
This saving of money also leads to an increase in demand for US Government Bonds in China.[xii]

 204.
The uneven sex ratio in China can explain half of the increase in private saving between 1990 and 2005.[xiii]

They go far beyond an individual's or even family's desire for better themselves economically. Consider the following comments by David Brotherton, a criminologist, sociologist, and specialist of the Caribbean.

 228. "But what are Dominicans fleeing from? In this general election year this question focuses our attention on the plight of this nation: it is now 49 years since the country was last led by a truly independent politician, Juan Bosch, in 1963. This extraordinary intellectual and man of unimpeachable character was duly dispensed by Washington, in league with its local allies, for his efforts to bring a popular democracy to a country that had been brutally and dictatorially ruled by Trujillo for more than three decades. Bosch's commitment to land reform, an anti-colonial foreign policy, and openly democratic elections were simply too unpalatable for the US fearful of a freedom-hungry Caribbean four years after the Cuban Revolution; thus the country was once more invaded to "save American lives." Henceforth, the Dominican Republic's trajectory towards dependency and hopelessness was firmly set in motion." - David Brotherton

 240.
241. The first points out that despite what we may think, the US has historically been quite good at incorporating new immigrants and it's likely to continue to be pretty good at it. The article specifically compares the US experience with those of several European countries.
242.
243. Why the U.S. Is So Good at Turning Immigrants Into Americans - Jason DeParle - The Atlantic:
244.
245. However, the story doesn't end there. The same popular publication (Atlantic Monthly) also reports about the glaring inequalities in the US education system. And while the article doesn't specifically say, it seems that part of the comparison is to more egalitarian European systems. While the general perception is that US students are falling behind, this article points out that when we disaggregate the data, students in many US states outperform many countries.
246.
247. Why are these articles important? Because together, they point out that the positive aspects of US incorporation, but also speaks to the issue of what new immigrants and, more specifically, their children are integrating into and this context might shape their experiences (and ultimately, their outcomes). It appears that we do a great job incorporating new immigrants into a remarkably unequal society. Given how much time we spend in the education system and its the ever rising importance, such levels of inequality in this institution is incredibly important to note.

Lesson Plan - Waldinger, Still the Promised City?

 248. These are some of the questions you should be able to answer after reading the assigned chapters in Waldinger's book.

 250.

 252. Basics

 253.

 254.
What are two major theories used to explain declining economic position of African Americans in urban centers?

 255.
According to Waldinger, were blacks or African Americans heavily engaged in manufacturing prior to the deindustrialization of NY economy?

 256.
Describe the Waldinger’s labor queue analogy.

 257.

 259.
Leapfrogging model

 260.
Persistence scenario
