This blog was one way, but I have a sneaking suspicion that students don't really read the substantive posts available here...I've also considered creating a shared "class bibliography" project using Cite-u-Like or Zotero. The idea is that there must be a way to quickly and easily share articles recent articles that we may read regularly, but that students don't see. In this way it's akin to enlarging their circle of resources. Of course, we could just add students to our social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, but I'm not one of those instructors who is comfortable sharing my Facebook information with my students and sometimes I take long breaks from Twitter. So at present, I'm playing with Flipboard. I create my own "magazine" around a particular class I'm teaching- Stats or Migration- and put articles that I think are interesting and worthwhile reading. Here's a look:
14.

 15.

 16. View my Flipboard Magazine.
17. I can see two major things missing: 1) unlike a blog, there is little commentary attached to the article unless I want to make comment to the article and 2) I imagine the magazine might start to get unwieldy when there are a lot of articles but no Table of Contents. In short, there's a lot less organizational tools in Flipboard than in a blog or even things such as Pocket. Still, the idea that if enough students are reading the articles and commenting on them, I can imagine it may get pretty interesting...

tools to turn rss feeds into PDF "newspapers"

The three main ones I can find are feedjournal, fivefilters.org, and rss2PDF. Nevertheless, sometimes I give into student demands and use Bb. And when that happens, I still try to work it into my preferred method of sharing documents with students-- Google Drive. After some trial and error, I've finally figured out the best way to do this.
26.

 27.
I create the syllabus/document whatever I want to share with students in Google Drive.

 28.
Then, I publish the document to the web (File -> Publish to the web) and click "update automatically" if that's what you want to do.

 29.
When you publish the document to the web, Google provides you with a link and an embed code. Unfortunately, the embed code doesn't seem to work in Bb 9.1 (at least not at my institution). So a brief Google search turned up this website with the code below that seems to work. (Don't forget to use the url of your published document!).

 30.

 31.
<style type="text/css">#titleicon, #pageTitleText, #pageTitleDiv {display:none;}</style>
 32. <iframe width="100%" height="1000" src="Paste the URL of your document here"></iframe>

 33.
34. BTW, I should point out a couple of things about Google Docs/Drive Privacy and "Publish to the web" options. A published document is a new document that is separate from your original document. The privacy options refer only to the original document in Google Drive. If you publish a document to the web, obviously anyone will be able to find it provided they have the link, but what they're looking at is really a copy of the document not the original document. What that means is that while they can see everything in the document, they won't be able to make changes, see who has access to it, who created it, etc. In contrast, if you allow someone access to your document by using the sharing options, you're essentially letting them see who created it, who collaborates on it, etc.-- it's like giving them the original document. Finally, documents that are set to private but also published to the web are NOT indexed by Google-- this is an important distinction if you don't want your documents to turn up in Google searches (which may sometimes be the case).
35.
36. In many ways, I've found that keeping documents private, but publishing them to the web is the best way to go for sharing documents with students if you're don't need to have them edit documents or work in Google Docs.
For many reasons, I still believe that a final paper is great assignment. One of the principal reasons is that despite all the chatter about valuing process over product, in many cases in the "real world," evaluations for promotion, pay, etc. are based on product. Even in academia, I know of no graduate school that will confer a doctorate on someone despite years of practice and experience (process) who has not completed a dissertation (product) (perhaps the exception being all those honorary degrees floating around...). Thus, I still strongly believe that sitting down and writing a final paper is an important and worthwhile exercise.
38.
39. However, I also know that unlike a dissertation, many instructors assign research papers not because they think students will write the definitive and most creative paper on some entirely new topic in a mere 5-10 pages, but because research paper assignments strengthen a set of skills that we think are important for students to have and develop including the ability to critically evaluate information, organize and reorganize that data, use it to support and defend arguments. and, of course, strengthen writing skills. And if these are the skills we're really interested in, many alternative assignments can be just as good at strengthening such skills. For example, student-created blogs or magazines require students to first think about what theme they want to create a blog or magazine around. Then, they need to sift through and critically think about information before they can make posts or write articles. Moreover, blogs require students to regularly read and write which tends to improve students' critical reading and writing skills.
40.
41. When I first assigned semester projects instead of final papers, I wasn't sure what I would get. But three semesters of such assignments and I am a convert. Admittedly, many students initially elected what seemed to them like the "lazy path" (many actually admitted to me that they chose their projects because they thought they would be easy). However, once they got started, they usually found themselves deeply engaged with their projects and eagerly looking for more information. They were more likely to do extra work to make sure their projects looked great, worked well, etc. Because their peers could see their projects, many felt a certain amount of responsibility to make sure that they did their best work. At the end of the semester, it was the rare student who had too little information; instead, it was much more likely that they had too much information and were working hard to evaluate information for exclusion rather than inclusion. In short, alternative projects often strengthen the same skills that we deem important when we assign research papers-- gathering information, evaluating it, and finally, integrating it in support of argument.
42.
43. Of course, there are projects that don't earn student high marks-- but in such cases, they are likely to come from students who probably wouldn't have worked very hard on research papers either. BTW, students certainly have the choice to write a research paper as well.
44.
45. Below is just a short list of some digital tools students might consider for their semester projects:
46.
47.

 48. Online Magazines:

 49.

 50.

 51.
MadMagz

 52.

 53.
they have 1 template that is free

 54.

 55.
JooMag

 56.

 57.
has free version

 58.

 59.
Issuu

 60.

 61.

 62.

 63. Blogs:

 64.

 65.

 66.
Blogger

 67.
Wordpress.com

 68.
Tumblr

 69.

 70.

 71. Mindmaps:
72.
73.

 74.
Mindomo

 75.

 76.
Free for 1 project, 3 mindmaps

 77.

 78.
Mindmeister

 79.

 80.
Basic plan is free for 3 mindmaps (note that the Personal plan costs, but the Basic plan is Free-- the information is buried near the bottom)

 81.

 82.
Wisemapping

 83.

 84.
is not nearly as polished but as the either of the other two, but is entirely free including allowing students to work in groups

 85.

 86.

 87.

 88. Timelines:

 89.

 90.

 91.
Tiki-Toki

 92.
Timeline JS

 93.

 94.
Flexible, free

 95.

 96.
Dipity

 97.

 98.
may create 3 timelines for free

 99.

 100.
TimeGlider

 101.

 102.
Free student plans

 103.

 104.

 105.

 106.

 107. Presentations:

 108.

 109.

 110.
Prezi

 111.
a PPT presentation is NOT a semester project (a PPT point presentation is great for distilling some project into a few slides, but it does NOT count as a final project. For example, you may want to showcase the results of your final paper in a PPT presentation to present to the class, but your final paper is the semester project)

 112.

 113.

 114.

 115. Bookmarks with Comments:

 116.

 117.

 118.
Pinterest

 119.

 120.
You may NOT just make a number of pins. Instead, you must comment on your pins and consider how they each individually and collectively address the major themes in this course.

 121.

 122.
Pearltrees

 123.

 124.
As with Pinterest, you may not just make a number of bookmarks. Instead your bookmarks should inform and support your larger ideas.

 125.

 126.

 127.

 128.

 129.

 130. Please note that I have NOT tried out all of these tools. You may or you may not find them useful and you are NOT required to use one of these. If your preference is to write a 10-15 page paper, that is certainly a worthy and appropriate semester project!

 131.

 132.

 136. It's always a challenge to properly format references and citations. Below are some useful guides.

 137.

 138.
Research and Documentation Online

 139.

 140.
The information on this site is from the print publication Research and Documentation in the Digital Age by Diana Hacker, and includes: an extensive annotated list of specialized sources for more than 30 disciplines; guidelines for documenting print and online sources; sample papers; tips for evaluating print and online sources; a glossary of research terms; a list of style manuals

 141.

 142.

 143.

 144.
APA Citation Guide, Ohio State University

 145.
APA Formatting & Style Guide from Purdue OWL

 146.

 147.

 148. Hunter Resources

 149.

 150.
Hunter College Reading/Writing Center

 151.
Reading and Writing Handouts from Hunter College Writing Center

 152.

 153. Automatic Citation Generators
154.

 155.
Citation Machine

 156.

 157.
Citation Machine is a tool to help you generate correctly formatted bibliographies.

 158.

 159.
EasyBib

 160.

 161.

 162.

 163. For those who are really keen on developing a database of their own references, you might consider full Reference Managers or Reference Management Software such as

 164.

 165.

 166.
Zotero

 167.
RefWorks

 168.
Mendeley

 169.

 170.

 171. If you use other resources, please feel free to leave a comment.

Below are a few videos I created to help you figure out Google Docs:

How to upload existing documents to Google Drive/Docs:

How to create documents in Google Drive/Doc:

Remember that you should name the document following this convention:

SP13-rm-YourLastName.FirstInitial-title of assignment

So let's say student Terry Smith wants to share the Qualitative Proposal with me, Terry would name the document as:

SP13-rm-Smith.T-Qualitative Proposal

For the reasons why you must name your document this way, please visit the Class Documents page. After you've named your document correctly, remember to share it with professorpok@gmail.com.

Google Docs also has a chat function that makes it easier for you and me to work on your paper together. Please watch this video to see how this function works:

If you would like to create a banner that links to this page (i.e. this validation result), do the following:

 1. Download the "valid Atom 1.0" banner.

 2. Upload the image to your own server. (This step is important. Please do not link directly to the image on this server.)

 3. Add this HTML to your page (change the image src attribute if necessary):

If you would like to create a text link instead, here is the URL you can use:
