It has a lot in common with a gargantuan <a href="/articles/corsair-xeneon-flex-45wqhd240-review"><u>Corsair Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240</u></a>, albeit without the signature bendable panel of that model. What you get is a 45-inch, OLED <a href="/articles/best-ultrawide-monitor">ultrawide gaming monitor</a> for $1,399. This might have sounded like a steal a couple years ago, but the OLED <a href="/articles/best-gaming-monitor">gaming monitor</a> market is sizzling right now. So while the AG456UCZD’s detractors aren’t huge, it has to brace itself from some unimpeachably excellent alternatives, even if they’re not all fighting on the exact same footing.</p><section data-transform="mobile-ad-break"></section><section data-transform="slideshow" data-slug="aoc-agon-pro-ag456uczd-photos" data-value="aoc-agon-pro-ag456uczd-photos" data-type="slug" data-caption=""></section><h2>AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Design and Features</h2><p>The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD is a true desk-domineering monitor. With its 45-inch panel, it stretches 39 inches wide and curves tightly forward. On a 48-inch-wide desk, it leaves little space for computer speakers on either side, though it includes speakers of its own. The stand is perhaps an even bigger issue. Shaped like a giant metal boomerang, the stand’s base sticks out a full foot. Setting the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD up straight forward, this would see the stand cut right into the mousing area of my two-foot-deep desk, and thus required rotating the stand to an odd angle. The monitor includes a VESA mounting accessory should you want to go that route, though its heft could present issues with many mounts.</p><p>From the stand on up, the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD shares many design similarities with the <a href="/articles/aoc-agon-pro-ag276qzd-review"><u>AOC Agon Pro AG276QZD</u></a> I recently tested. The stand features a useful range of adjustments, including a surprising few degrees of rotation. It would have been a plus to see cable routing through the stand, but at least AOC includes a small cable hook on the back of the stand to help keep things tidy. It also built a headphone hanger into the stand, but the size of the display prevents it from being terribly useful.</p><a href="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-7-1714090928613.JPG"><img src="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-7-1714090928613.JPG" class="article-image-full-size"/></a><p>The thin display panel shows off its looks by not including a large plastic backing on much of its rear. Instead, all of the extra electronics are housed in a smaller section on the back. This area features an angular design and RGB lighting that adds a bit of style but is still rather tame. </p><p>Since the main electronics are limited to the center of the rear, the joystick control for the monitor is only really accessible from under the display, and it’s even a little hard to find there. To make up for this, AOC includes a remote control. This provides convenient access to all the features and menus of the monitor, including quick control for volume and brightness. </p><p></p><a href="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/remote-1714090928615.JPG"><img src="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/remote-1714090928615.JPG" class="article-image-full-size"/></a><p></p><p>The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD upgrades the USB offerings of its smaller sibling. It includes four USB-A ports on the left side, making them much easier to access than bottom or rear ports in many cases. Those ports can link to a system connected over USB-B or USB-C with a built-in KVM that can automatically toggle between hosts. That USB-C port is also great for laptop users, as it supports DisplayPort 1.4 and 90-watt power delivery. </p><p>A pair of HDMI ports will work with consoles or streaming devices, though they are limited to a 100Hz refresh rate at the monitor’s 3440x1440 resolution. To get the full 240Hz refresh rate at 3440x1440, you’ll want to use the full-size DisplayPort connection or USB-C. </p><aside><h2>Big Monitor, Big Desk</h2><section data-transform="commerce-deal" data-slug="thermaltake-toughdesk-500l-rgb-battlestation" data-type="grid"></section><p>See more in our guide to the <a href="/articles/best-gaming-desk">Best Gaming Desks</a>.</p></aside><p>Since this monitor is already taking up plenty of space on its own, it’s great to see that AOC has built the power supply into the unit. That wasn’t the case for AOC’s smaller OLED, which required an external power brick. </p><h2>AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Testing</h2><p>While all of the recent OLED gaming monitors will share the commendable quality of having effectively infinite contrast, there is still plenty that sets them apart. Some of the differences are obvious, though plenty are subtle enough that only concrete measurements can suss them out. To that end, I’ve tested the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD with a SpyderX Elite colorimeter using the monitor&#39;s default settings as well as a number of different adjustments to see how they improve, alter, or worsen the quality of the visuals.</p><a href="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-36-1714090928615.JPG"><img src="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-36-1714090928615.JPG" class="article-image-full-size"/></a><p>Most OLED monitors deliver impressive color, and that’s the case for the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD as well. By default, it achieves 100% coverage of sRGB, 92% of AdobeRGB, and 96% of DCI-P3 color spaces. That said, the color isn’t terribly accurate. In fact, it’s a bit of a mess. Many colors see a deviation from the intended target, with a max dE of 13.76 and an average of 3.74. In other words, most of this inaccuracy will be perceptible. If you’re not creating content or a demanding media aficionado, it may not be a big deal.</p><p>At default, the contrast measures at infinite, with pitch black pixels alongside an SDR peak brightness of 268.5 nits. The monitor defaults to 90% brightness, though, which sees a max brightness reach around 190.4 nits. Since the monitor also defaults to a Warm color temperature setting, I also check brightness without this, and the default brightness rose to a comfortable 203.1 nits. With the anti-glare coating on the display, this is a reasonable level for office use as long as strong light sources aren’t hitting the screen. Sunlight will easily overwhelm it.</p><a href="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-19-1714090928614.JPG"><img src="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-19-1714090928614.JPG" class="article-image-full-size"/></a><p>HDR performance is commendable, though. The monitor was able to reach 794 nits when displaying a 10% window, and on a monitor this big, that’s a large area. For the full screen, brightness is capped much lower, reaching only 154 nits. This was in the HDR Native mode, which shines brightest. Other HDR modes sat closer to 630-640 nits. </p><h2>AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD – Gaming and Performance</h2><p>The AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD is not an excellent all-around display, but it has a lot of love for gamers. The 45-inch panel that’s such a wonder for immersing yourself into games and movies alike could have been a boon for productivity as well. It certainly has the space for some major multi-tasking, and I’ve used a 34-inch ultrawide for work extensively to great success. But the 3440x1440 resolution is simply stretched too far at this level, resulting in softer detail. It also requires a lot more looking around, since things on one side of the screen are physically further from things on the other. </p><section data-transform="poll" data-id="2afb4c73-e805-4b02-9847-226c0917df2d"></section><p>This monitor also suffers from the fringing seen on many of the early OLED gaming monitors from 2022 and early 2023. This issue can see thin lines of the wrong color appear on the edges of other pixels where two colors meet, such as the faint red and green lines that will appear on the sides of a yellow object displayed on a white background. Here in mid-2024, plenty of other OLED monitors have updated panels with different subpixels layouts that don’t suffer from this same fringing. Because the Agon Pro AG456UCZD’s pixels are especially stretched out, the fringing can’t hide underneath sheer pixel density either. Instead, it’s only further highlighted by the low pixel density.</p><p>Thankfully, these issues all but vanish in games. The fringing is much harder to spot in games and movies, and even the low pixel density hides itself well in the faster action of a game. While I worked, I noticed these issues, but when I sank in hour after hour in Helldivers 2, the display&#39;s merits stood out more. The rich color and contrast brought Terminid and Automaton worlds to life, and the 240Hz refresh rate kept Overwatch 2 running super smooth. The display also benefits from the near-instant pixel response time of OLED to avoid ghosting, so that 240Hz goes even further in gameplay. All of these aspects pair with the extreme size of the display, which quite effectively wraps up my field of vision when sitting at arm’s length. </p><a href="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-27-1714090928614.JPG"><img src="https://assets-prd.ignimgs.com/2024/04/26/aoc-ag456uczd-27-1714090928614.JPG" class="article-image-full-size"/></a><p>Some games still don’t play too nicely with ultrawide aspect ratios. As a result, they can look distorted toward the sides of the screen, stretching the visuals, as I saw in Helldivers 2. Others might limit what you can see vertically while stretching less pronouncedly on the horizontal axis, as Overwatch 2 does. Some games simply don’t allow for 21:9 aspect ratios. It’s hit or miss, but even in the games that don’t properly support 21:9, it can still prove impressive in spite of its awkward issues. The center of the display — where your focus is likely to be — also doesn’t run into these issues.</p><p>It’s a plus to see the AOC Agon Pro AG456UCZD include speakers, but they are not without issue. They can spit out enough sound to use in place of desktop speakers, but they sound pretty boxed in most of the time, like a loud speaker playing through a thin wall in the next room and resonating a bit inside their housing. The result is audio that’s distorted and overly skewed toward bass. We are working to address this and other high priority issues.&quot;</p><section data-transform="slideshow" data-slug="foamstars-screenshots" data-value="foamstars-screenshots" data-type="slug" data-caption=""></section><p>Okatani didn&#39;t say what the other high priority issues are, nor did he say when Square Enix would address them or the matchmaking problems.</p><p>In the meantime, v3.20 will be available May 2 and is headlined by the addition of a penalty system for those who intentionally disconnect during a battle or via the Character Select screen, or for being idle for a long time. Players who are penalised for doing the mentioned actions will be unable to join a match for a set amount of time, judged on a case by case basis.</p><p>Square Enix will also introduce a fix for spawn camping on Radiant Rhythms Gardens, issues around Chloe Noir, and a PlayStation 4 crash issue.</p><p>In our 6/10 review, IGN said: &quot;Foamstars&#39; combat mechanics are unexpectedly engaging, but confounding time-gated modes and aggressive monetization make them harder to enjoy.&quot;</p><section data-transform="divider"></section><p><em>Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. Xbox players, on the other hand, don&#39;t have access to the game&#39;s Quality Mode, meaning they can&#39;t experience one of the main appeals of the next gen update: 4K resolution on ultra settings.</p><p>This specific issue was confirmed on <a href="https://twitter.com/cataferal/status/1783625872324370854">X/Twitter</a> by tech expert Digital Foundry&#39;s Thomas Morgan. &quot;I can confirm that only the 60 frames per second Performance Mode works right now. They didn&#39;t fix almost any of the bugs that annoyed me the most (VATS crash and perception bug in Survival, for example).&quot;</p><p>FluffyBunBunKittens chimed in too. &quot;It is kind of amazing,&quot; they said. &quot;Now I&#39;m just waiting with interest what new bugs we get with this update.&quot;</p><p>One of these new bugs seemingly makes the game unplayable for some on Steam Deck. A <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1cctj09/fallout_4_update_seems_to_break_the_game_on_the/">Reddit</a> post from prunebackwards said Fallout 4 can no longer be launched on the handheld PC, a sentiment corroborated by many in the comments and elsewhere. Some players who can launch the game are finding myriad issues upon doing so too, like having no graphics settings, no launcher, defaulting to low settings, having a poor frame rate, and more.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Fallout 4&#39;s Next-Gen Update will be available for PS+ Extra members. Fallout 4 was available for free through PlayStation Plus to <a href="/articles/playstation-5s-ps-plus-collection-being-removed-in-may">all PS5 owners from November 2020 to May 2023</a>, but this version of the game, nor the PlayStation Plus Essentials Catalogue version, wouldn&#39;t allow players to upgrade to the next gen update for free.</p><p>A full $19.99 purchase was required instead, though Bethesda soon confirmed this was an unintentional bug. &quot;We&#39;ve seen some confusion regarding the free Fallout 4 next gen update for PlayStation Plus Extra members,&quot; wrote a Bethesda community manager on the company&#39;s official Discord, who clarified it should be free as expected.</p><p>Bethesda wasn&#39;t able to offer any clarification regarding the free PS5 version nor the PS Plus Essentials version, however, saying on <a href="https://twitter.com/BethesdaSupport/status/1783623623149830194">X/Twitter</a> that &quot;we do not have any information&quot; regarding either. In 2022 Samsung launched the quantum dot OLED panel (QD OLED) panel which is technically superior to standard OLED. QD OLED is only available on Samsung TVs as well as the highest end Sony A95 OLED TV. Samsung also makes the most affordable 8K TV. There&#39;s hardly any 8K content available, but these TVs do make exceptional PC monitors because of their razer sharp clarity.</p><h3>TCL</h3><p>TCL is another high volume TV maker and generally offer the lowest pricing among any of the big TV brands. In 2023, TCL revamped its TV lineup. The 4-series is now the Q6, the 5 series is now the Q7, and the 6 series is now the QM8.  The Q6 are basic 4K smart TVs stripped of any unnecessary features (for most people) at incredibly low prices. The Q7 TVs noticeably improve HDR image quality with the addition of a quantum dot (QLED) panel with local dimming and wide color gamut. They also making great current-gen gaming TVs since it sports a native 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 ports. The QM7 goes one step further by adding in Mini-LED technology for better HDR picture quality.</p><h3>Sony</h3><p>Sony, another member of the &quot;big three&quot;, carries a healthy lineup of TVs that are catered towards the current-gen gamer. That&#39;s not a surprise, since Sony also makes the PlayStation 5 console. Sony&#39;s OLED TV prices are dropping steadily and it&#39;s not uncommon to see them challenging LG OLED TVs these days in pricing. The A80, A85, A90 and A95 are Sony&#39;s OLED models and these are all great TVs for current-gen gamers. For the LED LCD TVs, gamers should stick with the X85, X90, or X95 because these are the only TVs that support 4K @ 120Hz gaming over HDMI 2.1.</p><h3>Hisense</h3><p>Hisense leads the pack in TV sales in the Chinese market and fortunately their high volume translates to low prices here in the States. The models to look at are the U6, U7, and U8 TVs. The U6 is the least expensive of the lineup but it still has good image quality thanks to the quantum dot (QLED) panel with wide color gamut (ULED). <strong>The U6K TV that came out in 2023 even has Mini-LED technology</strong>, making it the least expensive Mini-LED TV we&#39;ve seen thus far. The U7 is the cheapest TV we&#39;d recommend for current gen console gamers because it has HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K @ 120Hz gaming. The U8 is Hisense&#39;s flagship model. The 2023 U8K offers double the dimming zones over the 2022 U8H.</p><h2>What TV Features to Look Out For</h2><p>There are a lot of terms with fancy names that might confuse the first time TV buyer. What&#39;s worse, just because a particular feature costs more money doesn&#39;t mean that you&#39;ll benefit from it at all. Depending on your needs, you can ignore some of the features offered in the more premium sets and save your money.</p><h3>What makes a good gaming TV?</h3><p>If you own a current-gen PS5 or Xbox Series X console, then you&#39;ll want a TV that has HDMI 2.1 ports and a native 120Hz refresh rate. That&#39;s because these consoles can play supported games at 4K resolution at up to 120fps. However, that&#39;s only possible if the TV can handle that resolution and refresh rate. Not all TVs support this feature and the ones that do usually command a premium price. If you don&#39;t plan to game on a current-gen console, then this feature will probably wasted on you. There&#39;s very little 4K @ 120Hz media content available outside of video games. Some other features that a gamer appreciate are variable refresh rate (VRR), which is the TV&#39;s version of adaptive sync technology, and auto low latency mode (ALLM), where the TV switches to a lower latency when it detects gameplay.</p><h3>What makes a good HDR TV?</h3><p>HDR, or high dynamic range, is the range your TV can display from the whitest white to the absolute blackest black within a single frame. In order to have a very good HDR, you need two basic qualities: the ability to show as true of a black as possible, and a high enough brightness to produce a punchy white. Several TV features help in this regard. The panel itself, for example, is important. An OLED panel has pixels that can individually switch on or off, thus offering a true black image. A full-array LED-backlit panel simulates this by having &quot;zones&quot; of LEDs that can be independently dimmed, thus allowing the TV to deftly handle scenes where bright sunlight and dark shadows coexist. Mini LED panels allow for even more precise local dimming because the controller zones are smaller and more numerous. QLED displays have an additional quantum dot layer that enhances color accuracy and increases brightness, thus also improving HDR quality. Although the price tag without tax is steep as is, what many find offensive are the extra bonuses that the pack includes. Some notable features include expanded PMC pockets and increased Fence standing, which give buyers an edge by, for example, making NPCs less aggressive depending on player distance.</p><p>“This isn’t just perks like ‘increased stash space’ or ‘larger secure pouch,’” one <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/1cclux4/unheard_edition_is_a_disgusting_amount_of_pay_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button">Reddit user said</a>. “This is blatant ‘you get a giant head start in front of everyone else.’</p><p>“Any other good extraction shooters out there?” they add.</p><section data-transform="ignvideo" data-slug="escape-from-tarkov-official-unheard-edition-reveal-trailer" data-loop=""></section><p>Pay-to-win is a term most multiplayer fans hope they never hear when their favorite game is being described. It suggests that Escape From Tarkov rewards players for simply spending money while punishing those who don’t, but The Unheard Edition is causing a stir for more reasons than one.</p><p>Perhaps the most controversial action might be that many players were previously led to believe they would receive all future Escape From Tarkov content for free. The now-unlisted Edge of Darkness Edition, which provided a list of other goodies for $140, previously promised that buyers would receive “free access to all subsequent DLCs.”</p><p>It’s because of this that players were livid to find that The Unheard Edition is asking for hundreds of dollars to enjoy that new PvE co-op mode. It is worth noting that some are reporting that they are only being asked to pay an additional $100 for the new pack if they already own Edge of Darkness.</p><p>Many others seem to share the same sentiment, as official Escape from Tarkov social media channels are now plagued with memes and complaints from users upset with The Unheard Edition. Its Discord is in especially bad shape. While BattleState’s moderation team quickly moved to temporarily shut down most channels, the few that remain are filled with thousands of copy-and-pasted messages from players calling BattleState’s actions “selfish,” “unacceptable,” and “disrespectful.”</p><p>“This cannot be tolerated,” part of the repeated post says.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">escape from tarkov discord server rn <a href="https://t.co/GFY0t7gYIz">pic.twitter.com/GFY0t7gYIz</a></p>&mdash; Verrial (@Verrial_) <a href="https://twitter.com/Verrial_/status/1783454247704502675?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 25, 2024</a></blockquote> <p>BattleState isn’t taking the backlash too well either. The developer’s responses began simply enough, with Lead Community Manager appl3z0r sharing an explanation for disgruntled players on Discord (via <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikestubbs/2024/04/25/escape-from-tarkov-fans-are-outraged-at-new-250-pay-to-win-edition/?sh=564af5d53281"><u>Forbes</u></a>).</p><p>“It ain&#39;t DLC, its unique feature of the new edition added,” they said when describing the PvE mode.</p><p>They continued in a separate message: “DLC means additional downloadable content. PvE is a feature and a gamemode. Just because you all want it to become a DLC it wouldn&#39;t mean it is one. It’s featured game mode for the new edition of the game.”</p><p>BattleState <a href="https://x.com/bstategames/status/1783575279815848412"><u>extended this explanation on X/Twitter</u></a>, telling fans that it will keep them “updated on new features exclusive for EOD owners.” Things got more complicated when the official X/Twitter account for Arena Breakout: Infinite got involved. Many have compared the Tencent-made game to Escape From Tarkov, and BattleState didn’t appreciate it when the account began to take shots after the backlash began.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Have a nice 20 minute adventure in the blatant plagiarist game. A pinned post on the subreddit proclaims that “the gates are open,” giving users free reign to post and complain about The Unheard Edition as they please.</p><p>“Let&#39;s start this off right - we (the mod team) are just as livid about this situation as you are,” the post says.</p><p>The Reddit page contains hundreds of popular posts from today, including <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/1ccrqlm/unique_ingame_weapon_was_bought_from_the_asset/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button"><u>accusations that The Unheard Edition’s free unique weapon isn’t so unique</u></a>. Another post details <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/1ccslsn/lawsuit_update/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button"><u>an initiative that seeks to proceed with a lawsuit</u></a> against BattleState.</p><p>The Escape From Tarkov woes stem from <a href="/wikis/escape-from-tarkov/Escape_From_Tarkov_April_25_2024_Patch_Notes"><u>an update that BattleState published today</u></a>. As mentioned above, you can do that on many internet-connected devices, including phones, tablets, computers, and Steam Deck. Velma Dinkley (Mindy Kaling) likens a Beyoncé concert to a religious experience while hanging out with her newly Wiccan girlfriend Daphne Blake (Constance Wu). Norville &quot;Shaggy&quot; Rogers (Sam Richardson) is terrorized by visions of the dead, while Fred Jones (Glenn Howerton) converts to Catholicism to attract more customers to his &quot;spooky stuff hunting business&quot;. Those, uh, meddling kids? This isn’t your parents’ Mystery, Inc. It doesn’t feel like anyone’s, really. It’s hard to say who the latest, meandering installment of Charlie Grandy’s acerbic Scooby-Doo update is for. While it succeeds at making its titular heroine slightly more tolerable, Season 2 of Velma takes several, irreversible steps backward.</p><section data-transform="mobile-ad-break"></section><p>Solving mysteries is the crux of the show, and Velma’s supposed primary motivation. And yet, the genital-mutilating killer now on the loose in Crystal Cove constantly takes a backseat to a dozen other story threads that smack of writers painting themselves into a corner. Daphne’s two adoptive mothers are running to be elected co-sheriffs! Norville is still having visions! Fred is upset about what happened to his mother at the end of Season 1! It’s all very tiring when all you want to do is see the plot unfold in a logical manner. But Velma can’t even do that right.</p><aside><p><strong>What we said abot Velma Season 1</strong></p><section data-transform="ignvideo" data-slug="velma-season-1-video-review-episodes-1-8" data-loop=""></section><p>&quot;Velma is an often funny take on the classic Scooby-Doo series with plenty of risqué humor. But it’s unfortunate that most of what makes Velma funny is completely unrelated to the character who gets a starring role. This show likely came about because of fans who have always wanted more for the teenage super-solver. Ironically, the series would be exponentially better without its namesake – or, at least a version of her with a bit more character growth.&quot; – <em>Brittany Vincent</em></p><p>Read the full <a href="/articles/velma-season-1-review-episodes-1-8">Velma Season 1 review</a>.</p></aside><p>Instead, Season 2 is full of mostly unfunny gags from the same cast of characters that struggled to work with similar material last season. One minute, there’s more of the ridiculous “explanation” for why Norville is transforming into the  Shaggy we know and love from 55 years of Scooby-Doo cartoons. The next, Velma wastes time trying to convince classmates that Daphne isn’t the Wiccan novice she claims to be. None of these moments are particularly well-written or satisfying. Not when there’s so much more to explore. </p><p>These distractions come at the expense of new characters like the mysterious Amber (Sara Ramirez). Instead of spending more time on their relationship with their mom, former Hex Girl Thorn (Jennifer Hale), the writers would rather throw Amber into an episode-long “Breakfast Club detention” with Velma’s core quartet. Fred still gets some of the funniest moments thanks to Howerton’s unhinged performance, but he’s wasted on pining after his mother and spending time cracking paranormal cases that we don’t even see. </p><section data-transform="poll" data-id="587127aa-c5b9-4d0d-bcb9-d2c1b144e567"></section><p>Thankfully, Velma (the character) has become less insufferable. She’s somewhat capable of empathy now and keeps the rapid-fire sarcasm mostly to herself, though most of her dialogue remains wry and ironic, as though she’s aware there’s an invisible audience to please. While the rest of the cast seems oblivious to the outside world, Velma remains fixated on being clever to please others. But one thing remains a constant: She loves Daphne. Or at least she says she does. You’d never know from the way she treats her supposed girlfriend.</p><p>Despite Velma fumbling her admission of love for Daphne at the end of Season 1, the couple did share a kiss. It seemed to foreshadow a bright future for their relationship, but instead Season 2 brings us two bickering girls who end up in nonsensical misunderstandings. It’s a constant throughout these 10 episodes. Velma and Daphne have supposedly known each other since they were children. Their mutual romantic feelings have had plenty of time to marinate, so why do they treat each other like strangers? By the time Velma and Daphne come together in a meaningful way, the show’s reached its absolutely ludicrous conclusion, which does nothing to inspire confidence in their future.</p><section data-transform="quoteBox">This isn’t your parents’ Mystery, Inc. It doesn’t feel like anyone’s, really.</section><p>Velma Season 2 had every shot at taking the fiery feedback from the first season and blossoming into a fun riff on the classic Scooby-Doo heroine. Instead, it seems to have doubled down on everything that made Season 1 so unpalatable. A near-total mess of confusing plot threads, confounding twists, and bad jokes, it seems content to set its source material ablaze in the name of subverting expectations – and not in a good way. But the massive jump in takings is deceptive — most of it is just reflective of the addition of Activision Blizzard.]]></description><pubDate>Thu, 25 Apr 2024 20:56:46 +0000</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">71a979d5-c07b-4748-86a2-90885814b961</guid><content:encoded><![CDATA[<section class="article-page"><p>Microsoft&#39;s gaming revenue climbed significantly year over year, according to its Q3 earnings report. But the massive jump in takings is deceptive — most of it is just reflective of the <a href="/articles/microsofts-69-billion-activision-blizzard-buyout-imminent-after-stock-halted-and-uk-clears-deal">addition of Activision Blizzard (and King!)</a>.</p><section data-transform="mobile-ad-break"></section><p>For the third quarter of fiscal 2024, Microsoft reported gaming revenue up 51% year-over-year, or $1.8 billion, to a total of $5.45 billion. It&#39;s a record Q3 for the segment, but it comes with a caveat. 55 points of that net impact were from the Activision Blizzard acquisition, meaning that Xbox content and services revenue not related to Activision Blizzard was actually down 4% year-over-year. We saw a <a href="/articles/xbox-gaming-earnings-report-activision-blizzard-acquisition">similar situation last quarter</a>, too, and will almost certainly see it again in the next two.</p><p>Xbox content and services revenue is in a similar boat. It&#39;s up 62% year-over-year, but with 61 points of net impact from Activision Blizzard, meaning it&#39;s only up 1%. And hardware revenue, which wasn&#39;t touched by the acquisition, is down 31% due to fewer consoles sold.</p><section data-transform="ignvideo" data-slug="activision-blizzard-king-joins-xbox-official-trailer" data-loop=""></section><p>There are a number of other nuggets in Microsoft&#39;s 10-Q that highlight how Activision Blizzard is impacting the gaming division and the company as a whole. Operating expenses, for instance, were up $1.3 billion or 41% year-over-year for the More Personal Computing division (of which Gaming is a part) last quarter, 43 points of which came from the acquisition. And research and development expenses in particular are up - $669 million, to be precise. That&#39;s up 10% year-over-year for the More Personal Computing last quarter, 9 points of which were from Activision Blizzard. Sales and marketing expenses, too, were up meaningfully from the acquisition, as were general and administrative expenses.</p><p>It&#39;s expensive to buy another big company, even beyond the $69 billion Microsoft paid for it in the first place. The real value of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft will ultimately remain to be seen in the coming years, when we can look at gaming revenue in future quarters compared to this one, and see if Xbox was able to capitalize on its expensive purchase.</p><p><strong>Update 3:08pm PT: </strong>In the earnings call today, Xbox projected a very similar quarter ahead, with gaming sales growth in the low-to-mid 40s for Q4, with around 50 points of net impact from Activision Blizzard. Similarly, Xbox content and services growth is expected to be in the high 50s, with around 60 points of net impact from Activision Blizzard. Should the deal go through, it’d be the most-expensive video game-related acquisition by a long shot. It’s currently facing scrutiny from regulatory commissions across the world, including the CMA in the U.K. and the FTC in the U.S., which has now sued Microsoft in an attempt to block the deal.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
  3. The biggest hiccup seems to be Sony’s push against making Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox consoles. Microsoft responded to that concern by offering Sony a 10-year deal to keep Call of Duty on its rival PlayStation platform — a deal Nintendo subsequently accepted. As of December 12, a ruling on the merger has yet to be made in both the U.K. and the U.S.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

  5. Sony, refusing to miss out on January 2022’s acquisition party, snatched up Destiny developer Bungie for a cool $3.6 billion. Embracer Group purchased a number of studios and IPs from Square Enix, as well as Middle-earth Enterprises, which came with the film, game, merchandise, theme park, and stage play rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
