20.
The Dallas Wings made it to the second round of the 2023 WNBA Playoffs. In 2024, they’re looking to go further.

Training camp is underway for the Dallas Wings, with new draftees like Jacy Sheldon joining a team that advanced to the second round of the WNBA Playoffs in 2023 and is primed to compete for a championship in 2024.

 27.

 28.
Here's a preview of Dallas' path toward ultimate success, as well as what could prevent them from achieving the ultimate goal.

 29.

 30.
Running it back while improving along the way

 31.
Dallas took care of their top priority in free agency by bringing back Satou Sabally. She averaged 18.6 points and 8.1 rebounds and won Most Improved Player in 2023, and the idea that she can continue to get better should scare the rest of the WNBA. However, it appears the rising superstar will miss the first half of the 2024 season; she recently underwent surgery to repair the shoulder she injured while helping Germany qualify for this summer’s Olympics. The plan is for her to represent Germany in the Olympics and then return to the court for the Wings. If Sabally looks like herself—or even better—when she makes her 2024 debut in August, it could be enough to take the Wings to a Finals appearance, with a chance to beat the juggernaut Las Vegas Aces.

 32.
It's not just the Sabally show in Dallas; Ogunbowale is still the epicenter of everything. She wears No. 24 for a reason, bringing that Mamba Mentality and backing it up with elite offensive production. With this dynamic duo back, the Wings have a shot against anyone.

 33.

 34.

 35.
Like @bswhealth | #VoltUp⚡️ pic.twitter.com/vAR2Hy9nS3
— Dallas Wings (@DallasWings) April 28, 2024
 36.

 37.
 38.
 39.

 40.
But running it back isn't enough. This team fell short last season and needed to improve from within and beyond. That's why the Wings drafted Sheldon to add depth at the guard position. There's optimism that she, as well as Carla Leite, who the Wings selected at No. 9 overall but will not join the team in 2024, can grow into impactful players that contribute to winning basketball, but without having the pressure of leading the team immediately.

 41.
In the best-case scenario, Dallas has a perfect balance of win-now players and a few young guns that can help them reach the top of the league.

 42.
Not super enough to get it done

 43.
Did Dallas overachieve last year?

 44.
Maybe. Relying on a big leap from Sabally and having Ogunbowale carry such a heavy load isn't a recipe for success. Maybe 2023 is the best that pairing can give you, and with Vegas still Queens of the Castle, the New York Liberty right behind them and young teams like the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever looming, maybe this team is stuck in the middle of the league: not good enough to contend and not bad enough to get a top draft pick.

 45.
The only thing worse than being the worst is being in the middle, and Dallas will be stuck in mediocrity if it doesn't optimize its top stars and develop its rookies.

 46.
It's early, and we don't have any data just yet on how this team will mesh, but I think this team can be in the running for a championship. The gap between them and New York and Las Vegas may not have closed, but it's slightly shrunk. If their newcomers can shine and Sabally comes back better than ever, maybe they can go from contenders to front runners, but that's a tall mountain to climb. If anyone can climb it, however, it's Ogunbowale. Even if she fails to reach the summit, it'll be exciting to watch her undertake the trek.

 47.

 91.
 92.
There’s more than the Caitlin Clark Experience to look forward to this season for the Fever.

All eyes will be on the Fever this season because of one highly-popular rookie. But there is way more to talk about when discussing the Hoosier State team.

 93.
Caitlin Clark seems to be blending in nicely with the team, with Erica Wheeler serving as her tutor, and the rookie playing what is called “the right way,” impressing primarily with her spacing and passing. So in this season preview we’ll focus on other issues, ones also worthy of discussion when assessing how the Fever stack up against the rest of the WNBA.

 94.

 95.
What to look forward to with the Fever in 2024

 96.
Aliyah Boston is ready to lead

 97.

 100.
Aliyah Boston, pictured at a recent USA Basketball practice.

 101.

 102.
Coming off a successful rookie year and spending time with US women’s national basketball team, Aliyah Boston feels more confident about her role on the team and the expectations of the coach. She’s more experienced and mentally tough thanks to playing against and talking to WNBA vets. The media attention amplifies the expectations for this season and Boston will have to carry the team at least until Clark will get comfortable in the W, which will not happen overnight. The fact that, at just 22 years old, she’s ready to do that speaks volumes about her maturity.

 103.
Don’t overlook NaLyssa Smith

 104.

 107.
NaLyssa Smith, pictured swatting a shot while playing for Galatasaray.

 108.

 109.
NaLyssa Smith has dealt with injuries during her first two WNBA seasons, but the Fever showed great belief in her, picking up the fourth-year option on her rookie deal before training camp even began. This year in Turkey, playing for Galatasaray, she was averaging 19.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, immediately becoming the leader on one of the best teams in one of the best European leagues. It was her first year abroad, which shows that she can adapt to different circumstances and just play her game. It’s also good to know that she can produce when called upon, which should make her teammates feel more comfortable during what’s going to be a very stressful season.

 110.
Coach Sides against the world

 114.
Christie Sides, exuding intensity from the sideline during the 2023 season.

 115.

 116.
During her media availability on the first day of training camp, Christie Sides presented an “us against the world” mentality, building up her players, both old and new, while preaching togetherness in the face of opposition. Her calls for unity against all the other teams were directed at her team rather than the members of the media, and that’s fine, because that’s her way of motivating the players. We’ll see how it works as the season progresses and what other methods will she use to bring the Fever players together.

 117.
What to be careful about with the Fever in 2024

 118.
The media attention may be a distraction

 119.

 120.

 122.
Caitlin Clark, tossing shirts to fans at a recent Pacers game.

 123.

 124.
Indiana Fever are entering uncharted territory, as this sort of media frenzy is usually reserved for big market teams. Now everything they do—or rather fail to do—will be scrutinized by the media. So while the attention might be exciting and serve as a morale booster when properly utilized by Coach Sides, playing 36 regular season games on national television comes with a lot of pressure. Caitlin Clark is no stranger to attention and pressure, but not every player on that roster may be ready for the spotlight.

 125.
Kelsey Mitchell still needs time

 126.

 129.
Kelsey Mitchell, signing autographs after a 2023 game.

 130.

 131.
Kelsey Mitchell isn’t yet back to full training due to an ankle injury and she may need some time to get into game rhythm. Asked about the timeline of her return, Sides responded, “Hopefully sooner than later.” Mitchell is with the team, riding the bicycle and shooting the ball, but will probably miss the Saturday game against the Wings. It’s just one preseason game, but if the Fever want to make the playoffs, they will need her in every game. Last season, Mitchell averaged 18.2 points per game and made the All-Star team for the first time in her career. Hopes are she’ll improve those numbers when playing next to Clark.

 151.
Tomi Taiwo is getting ready for the Olympics with Nigeria.

From 2018 to 2022, Tomi Taiwo played for the Iowa Hawkeyes, before finishing out her college career at TCU thanks to the extra year of eligibility available to her because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, she moved to Portugal to play for Esgueira, while continuing to make appearances for the Nigerian national team, helping the D’Tigress progress to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

 154.
After spending 4 years at Iowa, you decided to transfer to TCU. Can you explain why?

 155.
We had discussions about the possibility of me playing for them during my extra year, but I had already made up my mind about transferring to another college for a different academic and basketball experience. Up to my senior year, I had spent my entire life in the Midwest, and I saw the Covid year as an opportunity to live and experience another part of the country. Importantly, I was looking for a particular Master’s program and Health Certificate combination, and it was obvious to me that TCU was the right fit. I have to say, though, that because of the interest from many coaches from various colleges across the country, the decision was more difficult to make than l initially thought. I would like to say that l enjoyed my four years at Iowa and I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of that program.

 156.
You had your best college season at TCU. Was it just playing time that elevated your game?

 157.
I think that the increased playing time during the extra year gave me the opportunity to really showcase my God-given basketball talent and play in a manner that those who coached me at different levels over the years knew I was capable of playing. I want to give a shout out to the coaching staff at TCU that year for believing in me and instilling a lot of confidence in me, especially considering it was my first year with the team. Forever grateful for that year.

 158.
This season marks your first time playing in Europe. What can you tell us about basketball culture in Portugal and your team, Esgueira?

 159.
The basketball culture in Portugal can be characterized as physical, smaller guards and versatile posts and some very passionate fans creating an intense environment! (In some crowds, you will even hear the drums). Esgueira leads with our defense and we pride ourselves on not taking a possession off. Good ball movement is another philosophy that we try to incorporate into our games and we thrive off of our amazing fans.

 160.
We’ll see you at this year’s Olympics playing for Nigeria. Take us through the qualifying tournament in Antwerp. You guys win your first game against Senegal, and what happens next? A lot of stress? Or were you confident that after beating Senegal you were getting in?

 161.
First of all, props to all the teams that competed in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antwerp, Belgium. It was a competitive and fun environment to play in. After beating Senegal, I think we felt confident going into our second game and we were definitely not complacent. Anything can happen in the game of basketball so playing our hardest in each competition was vital to increasing our team’s chances of qualifying.

 162.

 163.
What can we expect from Nigeria in Paris?

 164.
You can expect resilience, toughness, as well as a will to improve and excel from the Nigerian team in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

 165.

 166. And what do you bring to the table for the D’Tigress?
 167.

 168.
My strengths include my shooting ability, slashing to the rim, making free throws and defensive intensity. I am excited for this opportunity

 169.

 170.
A special thank you to Rui Mourinho, President of Esgueira Basket, for arranging the interview.

 585.
In her 16 years of ball, Parker won three WNBA titles with the Los Angeles Sparks (when she also was named Finals MVP), Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces, becoming the first player to win titles with three different organizations. She also won two Olympic gold medals and two WNBA MVP awards (2008, 2013), while posting career averages of 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, a resume that puts her among the all-time greats of the game.

 591.
In recent years, Parker has spent time between games and seasons serving as a NBA analyst for TNT and it appears she will continue to make that a priority, along with becoming more versed on the business side of basketball. Although Ace will no longer be on the hardwood, she will still be in all other parts of the arenas. The game will miss her on-court contributions, but it will still have her around in many other ways.

 592.
Happy retirement for one of the best to ever do it!

 612.
One of women’s basketball’s GOATs, Candace Parker has retired after a 16-year WNBA career that saw her win three championships and two MVPs, among many other honors. Her impact on the sport also outstrips her numerous on-court accomplishments.

On Sunday, Candace Parker announced her retirement from professional basketball after 16 years. On Instagram, she wrote:

 613.

 614.
I’m retiring.

 615.
I promised I’d never cheat the game & that I’d leave it in a better place than I came into it. The competitor in me always wants 1 more, but it’s time. My HEART & body knew, but I needed to give my mind time to accept it.

 616.
I always wanted to walk off the court with no parade or tour, just privately with the ones I love. What now was to be my last game, I walked off the court with my daughter. I ended the journey just as I started it, with her.

 637.
In 2008, Parker arrived in the WNBA with loads of expectations. The No. 1 pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Sparks after winning two national titles at Tennessee, she was the avatar of the next generation of women’s basketball, possessing a sport-shaking combination of athleticism, length, skill, savvy and smarts. She was a 6-foot-4 point forward with the ability to swat a shot, corral the ball, run the break and yes...dunk. As a rookie, she accomplished a feat likely never to be replicated in WNBA history, winning both the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards. From there, her ascent into the rarest air of basketball iconicity was not as smooth or seamless as imagined—but she still got there.

 644.

 645.
She missed the beginning of the 2009 season after giving birth to her daughter, Lailaa. Her 2010 and 2011 seasons then would be marred by injuries. By 2013, however, she was back at the top of her game, winning her second MVP award. In 2016, she finally captured that elusive WNBA championship, leading the Sparks to trophy mere months after Pat Summitt, her beloved college coach, lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. While Parker would not experience a storybook ending in LA, she emerged as a hometown hero in Chicago, signing with the Sky in 2021 and delivering the organization its first title that same season. In her final season, she suited up for the Las Vegas Aces, when, although sidelined by a foot injury, she closed out her career with a third title.

 646.
One of the sport’s GOATs, Parker can be confident that she did “leave [the game] in a better place than I came into it.”

 654.
Fortunately for us, Parker is not going anywhere. She emphasized:

 655.

In the mean time, know IM A BUSINESS, man, not a businessman. This is the beginning…I’m attacking business, private equity, ownership (I will own both a NBA & WNBA team), broadcasting, production, boardrooms, beach volleyball, dominoes (sorry babe it’s going to get more real) with the same intensity & focus I did basketball.

 656.
She further noted:

 657.

My mission in life, like Pat Summitt always said, is to “chase people and passions and you will never fail.” Being a wife & mom still remains priority #1 & I’ve learned that time flies, so I plan to enjoy my family to the fullest!

 658.
Congratulations Candace!
