32.

Most of us have had the misfortune of being micro-managed at some point in our careers. Micro-managing bosses don’t assign tasks by describing the desired outcome and allowing an employee to determine the best process to achieve the outcome. Instead, they want to specify every step along the way, essentially insisting on having you do the job exactly the way he/she would have done the job.Micro-managers appear to lack trust in their employees and/or they are tremendously fearful of negative consequences if something goes wrong. There may also be a compulsive aspect where a boss has decided that one-and only one-approach is or can be correct. This leads the micro-manager to constantly call, email, check in and demand reports. Handling a micro-manager boss is like having an additional job, because on top of getting the actual work done, you’ve also got to do the make-work necessary to keep the micro-manager reassured and happy. Are you working for a micro-manager? If you’re reading this, you probably strongly suspect that you are. But just in case you’re not sure, ask yourself: Does any of this behavior sound familiar?· The boss is highly controlling.· Most or/all decisions need to be approved before proceeding.· Wants things run their way, have rules that they expect you to adhere to.· Rules and procedures are overly rigid and detailed, removing any opportunity for the employee to think independently or react to the situation as it unfolds· Wants to keep a close eye on you and all their people.· Calls/comes in to see you on a regular basis to inspect what you are doing despite regular, frequent updates.· Asks you the same questions frequently and with repetition.· Is not open to or interested in new ideas and suggestions, even when the existing structure either does not work or is inefficient.· Is not interested in your input, observations or needs outside their areas of concern.· Change or even questions (as well as suggestions) are seen as challenging their authority.· Big on chain of command and protective of his/her status in the hierarchy.· Encourages a cookie cutter approach rather than responding to the unique requirements of a specific situation even when the standardized approach fails.· Rewards those who mirror the micro-manager’s behavior and/or adhere to the letter of the law without complaint.· Big on busywork, reports, committees, collecting information and asking questions because the micro-manager believes in working harder not smarter.· They distract you from doing your job by constantly demanding updates.Once you recognize that your boss is a micro-manager, you can begin actively managing your responses in order to position yourself for success and save your sanity. The first positive action step to take is to update your resume and network for new opportunities. The second thing you can do is replace your boss with your own positive inner coach boss. Talk to yourself and treat yourself the way you want to be managed. Encourage, empower, appreciate and value yourself and your ideas. This will help lift your spirits until you can escape.

 48.

There are three bases to an institutional effort; educational, commercial and welfare. An educational institution is formal arrangements of educators, children, and parents to create an effective learning environment for children. The educational environment aims to target all aspects of learning; knowledge dissemination, morale improvement, character building, and like. In this paper, we will discuss, briefly, the meaning, source and effects of micro-management on educational institutes. It is our hope that readers will be focused more towards quality way of teaching after perusing this humble effort.Micro-management in teaching is managing or controlling learners with excessive attention to minor details and providing rapid criticism on mistakes, over and over. Micro-management kills intrinsic motivation of learners; consequently, self-motivated, self-regulated, and self-directed learners are a missing phenomenon of micro-driven setup, unfortunately. Micro-management disregards the significance of cooperation dimension during learning; as a result, the teamwork aspect is dilapidated, eventually. Micro-management fails to respect the self-esteem of every learner of the institute; subsequently, frustration becomes commonplace among students. Last but not the least, micro-management fails to recognize latent talents of learners and focuses on goals only, disregarding means; and so, it fails to address learners’ passion and discipline, properly.Curiosity and creativity are essential elements of any excellence in human life. The two elements find their groundwork at the individual’s dominant area of thinking or intelligence, for example, some minds excel in logical reasoning, some in emotional/artistic depiction, etc. Generally, every individual is curious and creative by nature. Education is the name of providing knowledge, imparting wisdom and preparing students for practical life. Curiosity is inquisitiveness for knowledge and understanding while creativity is the birthplace of wisdom and innovation. Educational institutions play the role of motivating curiosity and encouraging creativity in students considering their respective intelligence. Presence of micro-management in the system overlooks curiosity of learners, gradually, and suppresses their creativity, ultimately. The miscarriage in the outcome of expectations of a system can provoke micro-management in the administration or teachers. Failing to discover where the problem truly lies, the supervising bodies begin to reproach students for poor performance and, as a result, find refuge in rigid approach to teaching, such as micro-management. As far as the letdown is concerned, the issue might be in the scheme and structure, and not inside learners. Sometimes, teachers express micro-management, unknowingly, simply due to ignorance of quality education. Either way, it is noteworthy, micro-management can direct, slowly but surely, the system towards corrupt-management – the worst type of management. It is destructive for all; affiliated public, learners and economy. It is a prerequisite for developing a fruitful environment in class that educators are aware of the true meaning of education and proper way of teaching. Assimilating the path of micro-management leads to alternative or conventional teaching methods. These methods or techniques are not productive, even unfavorable, in the long-run. For instance, knowledge of books is given excessive attention such that concomitant objectives of learning, such as capacity building, physical education, intelligence, and insight are overlooked or postponed. Consequently, students, who are adaptive of their elders’ way of discernment, can disregard the importance of such objectives and activities. Sometimes, rote learning is massively imparted to gain quick results. The incentive to teach in order to gain appreciation from management/parents on account of outstanding class result doesn’t entirely serve the purpose of education. A true teacher understands this and prepares the learners not only for the annual evaluation to come, but also for their practical life. The disciplinary counselling of students may require, sometimes, timely and comprehensive consulting by teachers/parents, but other missions of an educational institute demand, without exception, absence of micro-management altogether and implementation of quality education. Quality education or teaching aims for the inner gusto of learners, so more and more self-motivated students emanate, undoubtedly. Quality teaching recognizes the importance of cooperation and pays special attention to synergistic learning, now and again. Quality teaching never fails to respect each and every knowledge-seeker and addresses their issues in a timely manner. Lastly, quality teaching approves of the cause-effect duality and focuses on both – goals and means – for proper coaching of learners’ discipline and ambitions. It is noteworthy, the self-regulated, self-directed learners, later on, are likely to become leaders/entrepreneurs of the next generation. Therefore, the success of educational institutes, which is possible by quality way of teaching, is precursor of emergence of innovation and good leadership in any society.

 64.

Think about your perfect supervisor/manager/leader for a minute. Build a mental list of the attributes that perfect person would possess and think about the words you would use to describe that person.Done?I don’t know what is on your list, but I’d bet the farm on what isn’t.Micro manager.I’ve never met anyone who wanted a micro manager for a boss.Yet I’ve met many who felt they had a supervisor who was a micro manager, and I’ve met many leaders who struggle with that characteristic – knowing that they don’t want to be seen as one. I also know – for the most part – people who are seen as micro managers are acting with good intentions. It’s quite an organizational paradox. The biggest challenge in understanding (and therefore unraveling) this paradox is to recognize there isn’t a common definition of a micro manager.* It looks different to the manager because he/she understands his/her intentions and may not understand the unintended consequences of the actions.
65. * It looks different to employees because at different stages in professional development (and at different confidence levels) employees need different levels of direction. As a leader, once you recognize this definitional and situational challenge you will set the stage to improve your skills in this area. So with that as a starting point, let me share six specific things you can do to avoid being or being seen as a micro manager.Build a mutual agreement of success.
66. This is the starting point. Does your team member understand what successful completion of the task or project looks like? Do all employees know your expectations? And at least as importantly, do you believe they know? Missing this step causes problems because you want to make sure the project (and the person) is successful, and if you aren’t sure the team knows what success is (or if you keep moving the target in your mind) you naturally are going to want to check in frequently. Hmmm… that could be seen as micro management, right?Provide the right training.
67. Does the person know how to do the job or task? If you know he/she does, isn’t it easier to let him/her go for it? When you keep stepping in to provide just-in-time training, it might feel like micro management. That is a pretty good reason to give all the skills for success from the start.Focus on what, not how.
68. One of the biggest stumbling blocks for any leader is that often you are asking people to do things that you know how to do very well. And likely you are proud of your performance in that area and are truly an expert in completing the task. When this is true, leaders often start thinking that success isn’t about the end result, but about doing it their way. When you can keep your focus on the successful completion of the task, it is easier to avoid stepping in too often to “help.” This is perhaps the failing leaders have who are seen as micro managers.Remember it isn’t your job.
69. Repeat after me: It is their job, not yours. You grew by trying new things, and making an occasional error, right? Why would you want to rob others of that chance? Yes, I know there is something to be said for best practices, etc. But sharing a best practice is rarely seen as micro management. Want to stop micro managing? Do the steps above and then, let them do it.Ask them what they need from you.
70. Because different people have different needs for support and help, why not ask people what level of support they need from you? You might need to adjust their expectations a little, but this is a great place to start. It also opens the lines of communication for the last tip…Ask for ongoing feedback.
71. Let people know your goal isn’t to be a micro manager. Let them know your intention, and tell them you want their feedback. If you are truly open to their feedback and will make adjustments to your behavior based on it, this approach is a big step in your growth and will change people’s perceptions of you as a coach and leader immensely (and almost immediately). However, don’t ask for feedback if you don’t want it. But if you do, their feedback will help you calibrate your level of help and guidance to a successful place – not a place of micro management. If you want to grow as a leader, and don’t want to be seen as a micro manager, these six steps will help.Good luck!

 86.

Have you been trying to do SEO on your own and you’re not getting the results you’d hoped for? Maybe you’ve hired someone to help you and they are not living up to their promises. It can be very frustrating to invest time and / or money to grow your business and not see the results you wanted. Regardless of why the SEO campaign isn’t working, it’s never too late to turn things around. Don’t give up on search engine optimisation. Done right, it is the best way to boost the success of your website.Resurrect Your Failing SEO CampaignHire a new SEO company. Not all SEO companies are created equal and if you’re trying to do it on your own, the job might simply be too big for you to do while concurrently building your business. Hiring the company who uses a customised approach rather than a one size fits all SEO solution, makes all the difference in the world. Investing in SEO could bring you a huge return on your investment. Here are some of the areas we will look at for you and some of the areas that, if neglected or worked the right way, could be hurting you.Web DesignYour current web design could be a road block to your success. This could be the case both from an SEO perspective as well as from a conversion standpoint. Things like Flash could be hampering your SEO. Your design might also turn off potential customers for other reasons, such as page size, load time, colours, or fonts. Slight tweaks may make all the difference in the world. In some cases an overhaul might be in order.Keyword ResearchWhen you focus on keywords, the backbone of SEO, you need to focus on the right keywords. This will impact you from a search standpoint (being found for phrases that your target customers are looking for) and from a competitive standpoint. Some phrases are so dominated that it’s a waste of time and resources to attempt to rank for them. The right keyword strategy is vital to your success. On Page SEOSEO has to be done on every single page of your website. It’s not enough to simply optimise each page for the same thing, either. You need a multifaceted strategy with depth that helps search engines see what each page is about so that you can be accurately ranked.Off Page SEOThings that happen ‘off’ your site can greatly impact that site. An off page SEO strategy is a key element of success.Paid AdvertisingPay per click and other paid advertising campaigns aren’t always necessary and some website owners shy away from them because they cost money but the right approach could result in something very profitable. And beyond that, pay per click campaigns can help you dominate search engine results pages. By having a paid ad and a listing near the top of the search engine results pages, you could increase your traffic rate in a big way. And other paid advertising methods could also help you with branding and traffic acquisition as well. A good SEO company will look at many options to help you devise a solid traffic acquisition strategy.BloggingIf you’re not blogging, you are missing out on great opportunities to improve your search engine optimisation as well as to build credibility and authority in your niche. Blogs help you demonstrate your expertise and they help you talk to your customers while converting new visitors into new and referring customers. If your SEO strategy doesn’t already include blogging, it should. If it does and it hasn’t been working, maybe you need some expert advice to help you optimise your blogging efforts.Video MarketingVideos can make a huge splash on the internet. They can be used in both an on page and off page SEO efforts and can help you overcome buyer objections as well as help you demonstrate your professionalism. Videos can help you connect with more people. Adding video marketing to your online marketing strategy is something you should consider.Permission Based MarketingAre you taking full advantage of the traffic that arrives on your website? Not everyone will convert into a buyer when they visit your site for the first time but if you don’t take measures to attempt to convert them, you are, in essence, leaving money on the table. Beyond optimising your pages so that people arrive, an SEO company can help you appeal to those visitors so that they sign up to receive future info from you. If you can insert each visitor into a permission based marketing list, you can effectively insert them into a sales funnel. They can enter one end mildly interested in what you have to say and then when they come out the other end, they could be customers.Social MediaSocial media is a highly effective marketing medium. And it helps with SEO as well as reputation and relationship building. A good SEO company will integrate social media closely with your SEO campaign.Branding / Reputation ManagementSEO is important but most consumers nowadays also pay attention to reputation and branding. If your SEO results are okay but you’re not getting a lot of sales, your reputation management could be one of the causes. Optimising your website for search engines is important but if your reputation is optimised as well, this will increase faith in your brand.Traffic AnalysisTraffic analysis can be very revealing. It will tell you what’s working in your SEO strategy as well as what’s not. This information is golden. If you’re not sure how to analyse your reporting, get help. If your current SEO company isn’t doing this, they’re doing you a disservice.A lot of factors can contribute to SEO and internet marketing success. If it’s failing, or you’re tired of flailing get some help.

 117.

According to the National Day Calendar, February is Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) Month. Open source (OS) software can be a fantastic resource for non-profit organizations that need technology, just as a for-profit business does, but often have fewer resources to pay for expensive solutions. So, what is an open source software? You probably already use some of the most popular open source packages without even realizing it.

 118.
WordPress (blogging and website design)

 119.
Firefox (internet browser)

 120.
Android (mobile device operating system)

 121.
These are all open source software. OS software developers (aka the copyright holders) make the source code available to anyone to view or edit. The software or app is also free for anyone to use, copy, or give away. OS software is often developed in a public collaboration. For example, if you click on About Firefox in the browser’s Help menu, you will see that the Firefox internet browser “is designed by Mozilla, a global community working to keep the Web open, public and accessible to all.”The idea behind this way of creating software is the theory that programmers, who work for a for-profit business and the business itself, are focusing on protecting their ownership and profit in addition to, or instead of, making the software the highest quality it can be. OS advocates believe that a larger group of programmers, who rely on peers to find and eliminate problems in the code, will create a more useful and higher quality product for everyone. The big advantage of open source software, of course, is that it’s free. The fact that the code is public means that hundreds or even thousands of programmers and users may test, evaluate, debug, and enhance the app you eventually use. Here are the top 5 reasons open source advocates give for the benefits of open source software, in addition to the zero-dollar price tag:

 122.
Security: the more people who can see and test a set of code, the more likely security flaws will be found and fixed.

 123.
Reliability: it’s peer reviewed, with bugs fixed immediately rather than in far-future versions.

 124.
Identity: it can be customized.

 125.
Low-resource intensity: open source software can frequently be run on the older computers common in non-profit offices.

 126.
Freedom of choice: No commitment until you are sure (try as many different packages as you want-they’re free!)

 127.
There are downsides, however. The most common, in my experience, is that there probably isn’t a help desk or tech support phone number for users to call. The help desk for an OS software system may be the same blog or website where programmers and testers download code and discuss bugs that they find.Below is a list of some OS apps and software, which many non-profit organizations will find useful. They are all widely used, award-winning packages. Just remember, that doesn’t mean they are all automatically right for YOUR non-profit. Consider who on your staff (whether in-office or consultants) will

 128.
install the software

 129.
maintain the software and any data

 130.
train new users

 131.
use the software on a regular basis

 168.

This is a question that I am frequently asked in the course of daily business. The term “effective” is the most important part of this question. There are many ways to learn to trade, but some are time-consuming and very ineffective. On the other hand, the term “effective” may refer to which method is most cost-effective. We will take a look at several ways to learn to trade e-mini contracts and you can form your own conclusions from the evidence I present. You can teach yourself how to trade e-mini contracts. You really can; but this method is very time-consuming and you will spend a good deal of time reading popular texts, then practice trading on the simulated account so that you can learn all the nuances of trading. Many brokerage firms will be happy to supply you with the demo account to practice what you have learned in your research and reading. That sounds good, why wouldn’t everyone teach themselves how to trade?Aside from the costs of the textbooks, should you decide to purchase them, this method would seem to be the most cost-effective. Of course, you will have to consider the opportunity costs of teaching in yourself to trade e-mini contracts. You are liable to spend a year or so reading about how markets function and trade, usually at the very theoretical level. This means that you, as a novice trader, will have to spend a good deal of time with a demo account and develop your unique style of trading. In short, the “teach yourself” method of learning to trade is some slow going; it may be several years before you are able to become consistently profitable on the simulated account. Once you are consistently profitable on an e-mini simulator, you are ready to trade the e-mini markets with real money.Another method to trade would be to join the e-mini trading room. Incidentally, I consider this method the worst of the bunch because you will be tethered to the trading room for a good deal of your career. There are e-mini trading rooms, and some are very good, that is simply call out trades as they arise and you, as a novice trader, can choose to take the trade that was called. If you are particularly perceptive you may be able to figure out the system the trading room uses and strike out on your own using the system you have patched together from the e-mini trading room. On the other hand, if you don’t figure out of the system, you will end up spending your days eagerly waiting for each new call the elite trader in the trading room calls out; in short, you will be joined at the hip with the trading room in order to be consistently profitable. Finally, you may hire an experienced trader to teach you to trade the e-mini’s. The selection process for choosing a mentor can be expensive and very tedious because the quality of e-mini trading instructors varies widely. There are some very good traders out there who can teach you a sound trading methodology that will serve you well. On the other hand, there is a high percentage of trading instructors who have taught themselves to trade and offer their services as such. This category of traders often teaches some nonconventional methods to trade, to say the least, and some are downright incompetent. You will have to evaluate each program to decide which program is legitimate and will meet your learning needs. As an aside, when researching potential trading mentors, make sure you ask for a list of referrals and an audited accounting of their cumulative trading record. The backup documents like the brokerage statements to substantiate their claims are also a good idea. You want to make sure that your instructor can actually trade consistently profitable. In summary, I have presented several viable options to learn to trade e-mini contracts. You can teach yourself to trade, which can be a long-term process with no guarantee of positive results; you could join a trading room and glean information from the lead trader in the room; or you could hire a qualified e-mini trading instructor to get you up and running faster. I have cautioned individuals looking for and instructor to do their homework on each individual they may consider because there are is a wide range of confidence levels and the e-mini trading education business. Your goal should be to hire the most confident in structure possible; there should be an instructor who you feel comfortable interacting with and can prove he or she is a consistently profitable trader. Each method may work, but it is my opinion that you will get the best bang for your buck hiring a competent instructor. In this system, you will probably be trading with a month or so, hopefully for a profit.

 184.

Most small business owners fail when it comes to their small business marketing plans. They’ve got excellent technical skills in their line of work, but that just doesn’t translate to having effective marketing skills. As a result, profitability of many small businesses has been declining over the years. Ever increasing competition is making it more challenging in many ways. For those businesses that aren’t losing money, most are not producing the profit they could be if they knew how to market themselves properly. These business owners usually just copy what they see other businesses doing, or they follow the advice of some media sales person. The problem is they copy the wrong types of businesses, and the media sales people typically only know as much about effective marketing as the business owner does.Without the right kind of marketing system in place, the success of any business is by pure chance. To help remedy this situation, below are seven things a small business can do to increase profits while spending less on marketing.1. Use the power of free stuffEveryone likes getting free stuff and you can use that to your advantage. If your business lends itself to giving away free samples of your product, do that. It helps get people hooked on it. Business profits have boomed on this marketing model. As Chris Anderson author of the book titled, “Free: The Future of a Radical Price” says, “You can make make money giving things away.” In his book he talks about how businesses are giving away products and services they used to charge for, and in return, a percentage of their customers are buying something else. As a result, they are making more money than ever. When you give something away, you often activate a universal law called the “Law of Reciprocity.” It says that when people get something free, they feel obligated to do something for you. Obviously it doesn’t work every time, but it does work enough of the time. But there is another way to give away free stuff that can greatly benefit your business. When you do it right you get something very valuable in return: customer contact info…which leads us to the next tip.2. Start capturing customer contact info and use itOne of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not tapping their current customer base. They let customers visit their business (online or offline) all day long without ever trying to capture their contact info so they can continue to market products or services to them. You likely know how expensive it can be to get a new customer. But you can market to your current customers for little or no cost. Capturing and using customer contact info can mean the difference between a profitable business and one that barely gets by.Your business has more customer value in it than a customer can possibly digest in a short visit so if you aren’t continually marketing to your customers, you are throwing money away! You can make customer contact capture easier simply by using the power of free from tip number one. Simply start a monthly drawing to give away something free and print some registration slips visitors can fill out. Also have people register online on your website.Tell customers they only have to register once for all drawings and you will contact them monthly via email to let them know who won. Of course you will always include an offer for a product or service! What do you give away? Anything with a perceived value makes a great free item. Free items do not have to be expensive. Buy something on sale at WalMart or at eBay and offer it. You can also offer free informational reports that help people solve their problems. People are always looking for ways to solve problems they are having.Of course, once you capture this information you have to do something with it. If you’re too busy to take on any more work, then the next tip will help you out.3. Use automated tools to keep in touch with customersOnce you have a customer list, I recommend you send a minimum of 25 “messages” a year to it. A message could be an email, direct mail piece, fax, or phone call.If you don’t use an automated tool to do the work for you, you’ll likely be too busy to get the job done. When you automate, your messages go out regardless of how busy you get (the more messages that go out, the busier you’ll get). One tool you can use is an email autoresponder, which is a web-based system that sends out emails when someone signs up. It sends out emails at intervals you set up. You can also set it up to send an email on a specific day, such as a holiday. The great thing about an autoresponder tool is that you enter your messages in the autoresponder one time, then it automatically sends emails to your list. You can also broadcast messages any time you want.Using this tool, keeping in touch with your customers is easy and it will help keep the competition from creeping in and stealing your customers because they’ve forgotten about you and the services you provide.4. Stop marketing like you’re a big business.Marketing a small business like it’s a big business is something almost every small business owner does. They just copy the marketing they see being done at large companies with big brands. This kind of marketing is called “brand identity,” “brand building,” or “image” marketing. This is a HUGE waste of advertising money for a small business. You simply don’t have the resources you need to support a successful branding campaign.Brand advertising typically has no “call to action,” (they don’t ask you to do anything). They just give you features of the product or service, or they entertain you without asking you to do anything.Brand advertising is usually benefit free. The viewer has to determine if there is a benefit to them. It may contain a list of features and the user will have to assign their own benefit to each feature. It is usually focused on the product or provider of the product instead if the customer.A successful marketing campaign for a small business is created around direct response marketing techniques.5. Use old fashioned direct response techniques in new waysThe kind of marketing plan that works for a small business is direct response marketing. It doesn’t require a huge marketing budget to use effectively. It can be used for all types of products and services. And the good news is that you don’t even have to hire an advertising agency to do it since it doesn’t require creativity. All you have to do is learn the basic structure of direct response marketing and you can easily increase the sales your business makes.Direct response sales copy always asks the reader or viewer to take some sort of action i.e. “Call in the next 5 minutes, and we’ll include a free set of Ginzu steak knives!”.It may ask for the sale directly if a full “sales presentation” was done (one-step advertising), or it may ask them to request more information (two-step advertising). It will at a minimum, ask the reader to take some form of “traceable” action so you know if it is working or not. There should always be a headline for written advertisements! Never put your company logo at the top of a direct response advertisement. That’s brand advertising.Whenever you create an advertisement in any form always look at them from the customer point of view. Look it and ask “Who gives a crap?” about everything in it. Do you think the customer cares about your logo. No! They care about what you can do for them. Put in benefits and not features. Let the customer know what’s in it for them. A successful direct response ad for a small business includes several things:
185. An offer to buy something
186. Sufficient information for the consumer to make a decision to act now (or directions on how to get more info)
187. An explicit “call to action” sooner rather than later
188. A clear way to respond such as a telephone number or web page
189. A means of tracking the response.
190. Direct response advertising is not just used for mail campaigns. You use it in all forms of media: print, web, mail, and broadcast. Take a look at all the advertising you are currently doing no matter where it is and start making the change now.6. Use the Internet to advertise for freeEven though websites as we know them have existed since around the early 90s, only 49%* of small businesses currently have a website *9/08, Barlow Research. It’s surprising how many businesses do not understand how powerful this marketing tool is. If you don’t have a website, get one because there is no better source of free advertising! The Internet has hundreds of “Web 2.0″ websites where you post “content” for free. The content can be text, videos, or audios you create and it can lead people to your business. Plus, it helps establish you as an expert in your field.EzineArticles.com is one such place you can post content. There was no charge to post this article. All I had to do is write it, post it, and then you found it.You can put links in the “author resource” section, to drive traffic to a page on your website. The articles you post in EzineArticles can rank extremely well in Google search results with a little help from you.You also want to get your business listed in places like Google Local if you do local business. Once again this is absolutely free.Once you learn how to do use the Internet for promotion you’ll have a head start on the future of advertising and you get customers for free!7. Outsource routine marketing tasks so you can work on the growing your businessOne of the biggest problems small business owners have is that they get so consumed by working IN their business, they don’t have time to work ON their business. So no growth can occur. When it comes to marketing yourself on the Internet, there are ways to use “virtual assistants” to do most of the work for you. A virtual assistant is someone you hire on a full or part-time basis who does the work for you.But a virtual assistant is not a direct employee so you don’t provide benefits or have the normal hassles of an employee. They are usually located somewhere in the world that has low-cost wages so they are very affordable. That’s the beauty of the Internet and the communication it provides.Virtual assistants aren’t just confined to small business marketing plan tasks though. They can do almost anything for you: reservations, schedule appointments, answer phones, customer service, send flowers, buy a present for your spouse, find someone to fix your car, website development, accounting, software development, writing, graphics, or anything you need. There are lots of resources on the Internet that can help you find a virtual assistant.Create Your Small Business Marketing Plan Now!Use these seven marketing tips to start building your small business marketing plan right now. If you procrastinate, your busy life will get in the way of business growth. Even if you only take a little of the advice you’ve been given, you’ll find it can have a big impact on the profitability of your business.

 205.

The talented comedian, actor, writer, producer and singer Steve Martin once said, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”This theory expands much further than the entertainment industry. Rather, it is an excellent goal for any individual who wants to grow their professional life and build a successful career. You may think branding and marketing are for the public relations and communication departments; however, you will never be considered for a job opening or special project lead if no one knows your name. If people remember you, what they know about you and how they talk about you is all part of your personal brand.Certainly having a resume and an accomplished work history is important, but your personal brand – how people identify you – is the selling point in your career success.Personal brand expert Dan Schwabel gives one of my favorite definitions: “Personal branding is all about discovering what makes you special, and then communicating it to the right people, through the right channels.”Building an effective brand, sharing your brand, and then continually strengthening and protecting your brand are the three steps to lead you on the path toward increased salary and personal job satisfaction.1. Build Your BrandBefore you can build your personal brand, you must know what your existing brand is. You may ask yourself, “How can I know what it is if I have not built it yet?” While you may not know what it is, others have already been creating it for you. How you act, present yourself and treat others and how hard you work all reflect people’s opinions of you, which is in fact your brand. Ask a trusted superviser, mentor or colleague to describe how others perceive you.Leverage this information and the following checklist to start planning how you will refine your brand.• Define your professional goals and how you will accomplish them.• Use this career map to identify the key elements of your personal brand.• Create a brand statement that details how you want to be known and what you want to be known for.2. Communicate Your BrandAlthough you might have built a great personal brand, it is only useful if you are able to effectively communicate it to the professional world. To communicate your brand, you need to:• Ensure that your supervisor, boss and other executives in the company are aware of your unique talents as well as the value you add to the corporation. Do this by maintaining regular communication on your progress on projects and the results that you deliver.• Start paying attention to your daily interactions with those around you, including colleagues, clients, and even friends and family, consciously aligning these interactions with your personal brand goals.• Remember the timeless saying that your actions speak louder than words. At work, volunteer for extra projects and take on new responsibilities that are in line with the talents and traits you want to showcase.• Social media has enhanced the way companies market their brands and connect with their customers. You can implement this same technique to network and market yourself to employers. The key to creating a strong brand image through social media is consistency. Use the same name, picture and personal tagline when registering for different sites to assure people recognize your profile. About.me is an excellent way to link your different profiles, blogs and websites. You can personalize this page to reflect your brand image as well as track activity.• Consider starting a blog or creating a personal website to showcase your work. This allows you to build your reputation as a subject-matter expert, which is important to maintain after you have landed your dream job. Link your social media profiles with automatic cross posts to make this easier. In addition, reaching out through blogs and other communication outlets opens the door to grow your professional network with other bloggers.• Update these other communication tools to help you highlight the brand you want to communicate: business cards, résumé and cover letter, work portfolio, and wardrobe.3. Strengthen and Protect Your BrandTo climb the corporate ladder you need to market yourself and your brand image. This includes maintaining a professional appearance and behavior at all times. As a result of increased technology, especially social media outlets, the lines between your personal and professional life often blend together. “There is no professional or personal anymore,” says successful entrepreneur and businessman Peter Shankman. “There’s simply your brand, and it’s up to you to determine whether your brand is affected positively or negatively.”The following steps will help you strengthen and protect your personal brand:• Continually update your brand, and your professional achievements will grow. Maintain records of projects you have worked on, as well as the quantifiable results of these projects. This proof is what you will need to present when you are ready to ask for a promotion or raise.• Protect your reputation by regularly monitoring your social media accounts, website, blog posts and other communication outlets. Review pictures, comments and posts to assure they are appropriate and professional. Your brand should be a positive reflection of you.Building, improving and maintaining your personal brand takes a great deal of work. Managing your brand is a continuous process. It is not easy, however; taking the time to align your career goals and how you want others to perceive you is a proven way to help you confidently ask for a raise or bravely go outside your comfort zone to pursue a new opportunity. Ultimately, your personal brand will help you achieve your career dreams. The author is the CEO/owner of the locally-based outplacement firm, DMD & Associates, Inc.
