  74. <br />Carene nos trae el desayuno en una cesta.<br />
  75. En el pantalán hay dos personas preparando la motora Serengetti que nos llevará esta mañana a la observación de cetáceos.. Una planeadora con tres motores fuera-borda de 300 CV, debe ser muy rápida.<br />
  76. Vamos al punto de encuentro de “Eagle Wing Tours”. Somos 11 pasajeros y una capitana-guía-naturalista, Shira.<br />
  77. Nos ponemos un pantalón impermeable y una chaqueta-flotador encima de la ropa.<br />
  78. Embarcamos y salimos hacia el Este dirección al estrecho que separa Vancouver Island del continente.<br />
  79. El paisaje es de islas cubiertas de bosques de coníferas hasta la orilla, con playas de grandes rocas.<br />
  80. Pasamos junto a un islote delante de un faro en el que descansa una familia de leones marinos.<br />
  81. Se ven también cormoranes y otras aves marinas.<br />
  82. El mar está totalmente plano, y avanzamos a gran velocidad entre islas e islotes.<br />
  83. Nuestra lancha es muy rápida y nos permite llegar muy lejos, pero de momento nada, y nuestra Skipper decide ir hacia el sur, entrando en aguas americanas.<br />
  84. Por fin, “ There you are!”<br />
  85. A lo lejos hay orcas. Nos acercamos y vemos las grandes aletas de dos machos, que pueden tener dos metros de altura, y otras más pequeñas de hembras y jóvenes, quizá sean seis.<br />
  86. Hay medidas de protección especiales para el avistamiento de orcas que limitan la distancia a 200 metros.<br />
  87. Estas son “Transient” orcas. Van recorriendo la costa cazando otros mamíferos, y van en pequeños grupos. Por otro lado están las “Resident” orcas que permanecen en una zona concreta y se alimentan de salmones y arenques. Estas viven en grupos numerosos de hasta 40 individuos, y parece que su número está disminuyendo por acciones humanas que afectan el entorno.<br />
  88. Vemos fugazmente un gran lomo negro con una pequeña aleta dorsal de una ballena jorobada, pero aunque esperamos un poco no vuelve a aparecer. Nos comenta nuestra Skipper que las ballenas jorobadas están en el menú de las orcas, y que es muy extraño verlas en el mismo sitio.<br />
  89. Se ha hecho muy tarde y volvemos a Victoria a toda velocidad por un mar plano con islas boscosas a un lado y grandes montañas nevadas a lo lejos por el otro lado, las Olympians.<br />
  90. Hemos visto orcas!<br />
  91. Serengetti nos deja en el pantalán a cuatro metros de nuestro alojamiento flotante. Nos quitamos las prendas junto a un concurrido grupo que se prepara para la próxima salida. “Did you see any whales?” “ Yes, we saw orcas!” “Wow, that’s what we came for!”<br />
  92. Y nuestra Skipper nos pide “Please, tell it to your friends!”<br />
  93. El pantalán es una congregación de gente feliz: Los que acabamos de ver, los que esperan ver, y los que viven de enseñarlo.<br />
  94. Después de unas pizzas magníficas que nos tomamos mientras vemos maniobrar avionetas sobre flotadores y “Water Taxis” amarillos nos vamos caminando al British Columbia Museum. Veníamos para aprender sobre la cultura de los primeros pobladores y sobre los totems, pero el museo tiene cerrada una planta por tareas de renovación y lo que podemos ver es sobre historia natural, un especial sobre dinosaurios de la costa noroeste y una exposición sobre la naturaleza de la isla, donde aprendemos que las nutrias que estamos viendo y fotografiando son de río, que salen a la costa a veces buscando comida, y se diferencian de las marinas en que cuando pillan comida, salen del agua para comer, mientras que las marinas se ponen flotando panza arriba. Nuestra nutria salió del agua para zamparse su pez, así que quedó inmortalizada como “de río” en nuestro viaje.<br />
  95. La tienda del museo tiene muchos artículos y libros sobre las “First Nations” y compramos alguno para ir aprendiendo en los próximos días..<br />
  96. Detrás del museo hay una zona de hierba y grandes árboles con totems impresionantes, y un grupo numeroso bailando en un corro al son de cantos y percusiones que suenan muy bien.<br />
  97. Hay dos grandes edificios victorianos que aparecen en todos los reportajes de Victoria, uno es gubernativo y el otro un gran hotel.<br />
  98. Más adelante entramos en la calle Douglas. Es peatonal, con tiendas para turistas y de artículos de lujo. Hay edificios muy bonitos, muchos con aire victoriano, alguno con aire americano estilo años 50, con escaleras de incendios en la fachada, y una librería espectacular.<br />
  99. Entramos en un comercio de gran superficie dedicado a actividades al aire libre, especialmente al senderismo. Aprovechamos para comprar un spray de pimienta para defendernos en caso de un ataque de oso. Como se considera un arma, tienes que ser mayor de edad, y leer y firmar un documento de instrucciones de uso para que te lo vendan.<br />
  100. Ah, además del spray compramos un cascabel para la mochila. Parece que ir haciendo ruido funciona, los osos prefieren alejarse de los humanos.<br />
  101. Un poco más adelante salimos al  Chinatown más antiguo de Canadá.<br />
  102. Tiene muchos toques decorativos y una calle muy estrecha.<br />
  103. Cogemos un Water Taxi que nos deja a la puerta de nuestro alojamiento.<br />
  104. Terminamos el día con un  Fish &#038; Chips de “Deep fried salmon with chips”.<br />
