BYU added a big piece to its 2026 class as 3-star cornerback Jaxson Gates announced his commitment to BYU. Gates had been committed to Syracuse from November through June, but committed to BYU after taking an official visit to the school last month.

The Southern California native also had offers from Michigan State, Utah, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Mississippi State, Oregon State, and several others. He had taken official visits to Utah, Michigan State, and Syracuse in the last month.

Listed at 6-foot-1, Gates is a big-time commit for BYU’s defense. Cornerback has historically been the toughest position to recruit for BYU, and BYU was able to land a high 3-star with multiple competing P4 offers. 247 Sports rates Gates at the #49 CB in the 2026 class.

Gates also brings a strong track background to BYU. He ran a 10.72 100-meter dash back in March, and that speed translates on the football field. Gates ended his junior year with 30 tackles and 6 passes defended.

UteZone’s Dan Sorensen had this scouting report of Gates on May 31:

“When watching film, it’s clear that even with an 88 rating, Gates may be underrated based on his skill set. Gates plays exclusively on the boundary and is incredibly adept at press coverage. He has fluid hips and is able to change direction with ease. His elite speed is apparent as he uses it to keep pace or make up ground with receivers on the regular. He is aggressive in pass coverage and attacks the ball when it’s in the air. He has elite cover skills and is able to lock down receivers without excessive grabbing or reaching. He is a solid tackler and isn’t afraid to stick his nose into the action to take down a ball carrier. On film, Gates has everything the Utes are looking for in a corner.”

Gates is the highest rated defense back in BYU’s 2026 class and will have a great chance to see playing time early in his BYU career.

BYU landed its second commitment of the day as 3-star 2026 defensive lineman Nehemiah Kolone announced his commitment to BYU.

The Stillwater, Oklahoma product chose BYU over offers from Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Baylor, Arizona, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, and others. Kolone visited BYU the weekend of June 20 and had a final three of BYU, Oklahoma State, and Michigan State.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, Kolone could play either defensive end or defensive tackle depending on how his frame fills out. He’s been productive his last two seasons of high school ball, racking up 99 tackles and 14 TFLs across two seasons. Kolone also participates in shot put. He is the 18th commit for BYU in the 2026 class and joins Lopeti Moala and PJ Takitaki as the third defensive line commit in this class. Takitaki is an edge while Moala and Kolone could play either inside or outside.

BYU continues to add to its impressive 2026 class as 4-star linebacker Braxton Lindsey announced his commitment to BYU Monday. Lindsey is rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN and high 3-star prospect by 247 Sports.

After a brief pump-fake towards Oklahoma, four-star Rogers linebacker Braxton Lindsey commits to BYU. pic.twitter.com/Ae05tRs46z
— Michael Main (@MichaelMain__) July 7, 2025

A top 10 prospect in the state of Arkansas, Lindsey chose BYU over offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Miami, Baylor, Utah, Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU, Wisconsin, Purdue, SMU, Michigan State, and several others. Lindsey has Oklahoma, Mizzou, and Arkansas as other finalists, but BYU closed strong and was able to get the talented pass rusher.

Lindsey is two-way standout on offense as an outside linebacker and pass catcher, As a junior, Lindsey tallied 28 tackles, 9 sacks, 10 quarterback pressures, and 2 forced fumbles in limited defensive snaps. Offensively, he also posted 62 receptions for 1,139 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Due to his size, Lindsey could seemingly play outside or inside linebacker and has the ability to rush the passer. Lindsey’s receiving background should help his cover skills at the college level. He has the makings of a multi-year starter in BYU’s linebacker room and a disruptive piece in BYU’s front seven.

You can watch highlights of Lindsey below.

AJ Dybantsa Wins MVP as Team USA Wins Gold Medal in FIBA U19 World Cup

Photo by Vianney Thibaut/FIBA via Getty Images

Team USA went into Switzerland as the favorites to win gold and came away with the gold medal after a decisive 109-76 over Germany in the Gold Medal game Sunday. Both USA and Germany came into the match 6-0, but Team USA’s array of weapons overwhelmed the German squad, who were headed by Texas Tech guard and All-Big 12 freshman Christian Anderson.

AJ Dybantsa took home MVP honors from the tournament averaging 14.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals on 42/50 (84%) from the foul line across seven games. AJ led all players in the tournament in free throw attempts, using his imposing 6-foot-9 frame to get the consistently get to the paint. Attacking the basket and finishing in the arc is one part of AJ’s game that makes him special, and teams had little answer for AJ when he attacked the paint. AJ also shot 68% inside the arc on field goal attempts.

One thing that really stood out to me in the tournament was AJ’s motor and defense. Team USA employed a pressure-heavy defense that relied on forcing turnovers, and AJ was often the head of that defense and guarding the opposing team’s point guard. Top players as talented as AJ often can take defense off, and AJ was exactly the opposite — his motor was non-stop most of the tournament.

One of the biggest questions I’ve had for AJ is his three-point shooing, and he finished the tournament just 2/18 (11%) from three. AJ has had moments in his basketball career when he can get hot from three, but outside shooting remains his biggest opportunity.

Overall, this was an exciting showcase for BYU fans to get a taste of what AJ can provide. One of the best things about AJ is that his floor is so high. Defensively, AJ is engaged and has the effort and measurables of an excellent defender. Offensively, even if he has a poor shooting game he can collapse a defense and get the free throw line or open up outside shots for others. Opposing wings just don’t have the size and athleticism to guard AJ, and he’ll force a ton of fouls when opposing teams try to guard him.

AJ now gets to continue summer workouts for BYU before BYU’s first exhibition game October 18 at Nebraksa.

What Now for BYU at QB in 2025?

It appears BYU will have a new quarterback for the 2025 season. Who will it be?

It’s been a topsy-turvy month or so for the BYU football program. On the bright side, five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons chose the Cougars.

Unfortunately, he can’t step in and help the squad in 2025.

Jake Retzlaff is in the middle of swirling firestorm of controversy. As of Monday, the reports are that the civil case against Retzlaff, which was regarding an alleged sexual assault, is now dropped.

The woman who accused BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff of sexual assault in a civil suit has withdrawn her civil case, sources tell me and @BonaguraESPN. The paperwork has been filed to end the case. https://t.co/n8W3mhGvm4
— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) June 30, 2025

However, that only came after reports indicated Retzlaff intended to transfer out of BYU. He was facing a lengthy suspension from BYU, given the admitted Honor Code violation.

Long story short, the Cougars will debut a new quarterback when they take the field against Portland State on August 30.

So, who will it be?

At this point, it is pure conjecture. BYU does not start fall camp until late July or the first few days of August. That is still a month away. That means the coaches won’t really have to put anything out in the world regarding their plans until then.

Let’s take a look at the options to replace Retzlaff as BYU’s quarterback for the 2025 season.

Treyson Bourguet

Bourguet transferred from Western Michigan ahead of last season, and remains on the roster. He passed for over 1,300 yards over parts of two seasons with the Broncos before making the jump to Provo as a preferred walk-on. He has 10 games of FBS experience under his belt. The tradeoff is that while he is experienced, he is far from the most athletic QB BYU has on its roster.

McCae Hillstead

Hillstead came from Utah State with a reputation. In 2023, he set a single-game Utah State record for a freshman quarterback, tossing for 399 yards against James Madison. He ended up playing eight games for Utah State that season. He is a shorter, stocky, well-built athlete who can make things happen with his legs and has a rocket arm for someone lacking elite size. He has a decent chance of emerging as the starter in late August. The coaches think highly of him.

Bear Bachmeier

Not every quarterback garners an offer list consisting of Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oregon, Washington State, Utah, Oregon State and Michigan. He is 6-foot-2, and 225 pounds, built well to run the ball and be physical. Aaron Roderick likes mobile, athletic quarterbacks and Bachmeier fits that mold. He transferred to BYU this offseason after initially choosing Stanford.

The biggest question for offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick faces is- which is more important, experience or athleticism? His most experienced quarterback on the roster (Bourguet) is also his least athletic. Bachmeier has the highest athletic ceiling of the three, but is yet to take a snap in college.

Hillstead might be the heady choice, given he is more experienced than Bachmeier and more athletic than Bourguet. With BYU needing an immediate solution, he seems like the leading candidate.

Obviously, this will be the hottest storyline when BYU opens camp in roughly one month.

BYU made the cut for one of its top 2026 targets as 4-star wing Dean Rueckert included BYU in his top 5 along with Washington, Clemson, Utah, and Stanford.

Dean’s dad told me that Dean’s official visit to BYU is scheduled for July 28-29; it was initially scheduled for early September but the family moved it up.

A 4-star recruit in the 2026 class, the Timpview HS product is rated as the #62 prospect overall in the 247 composite rankings. Dean is a dynamic scorer and playmaker who can score in bunches from beyond the arc or at the basket. Kevin Young offered Dean shortly after he was hired as head coach, and BYU has made him a priority since. Dean comes from a BYU family and has attended BYU games over the years. I talked to Dean about BYU last year after he received the offer.

Dean’s AAU squad, Utah Prospects, will be involved in some big events in the coming weeks, and Dean could receive additional offers from schools that he seriously considers. As of now, I would consider BYU the favorite due to his connections to BYU and relationship with the coaching staff. Dean has the potential to be a key part of BYU’s program for multiple years and eventually a top player on the team.

BYU Cougar AJ Dybantsa headlines the Team USA in the FIBA Under-19 (U19) World Cup. The biennial event is held this year in Lausanne, Switzerland and runs June 28-July 6.

16 countries are represented and are split into four groups. Team USA’s group consists of Australia, France, and Cameroon. All 16 teams make the knockout stage beginning July 2 and are ranked based on how they finish in the group stage. The knockout stage is single-elimination and culminates in the championship game on July 6.

AJ Dybantsa is the top player in the tournament and leads a strong USA squad. He is joined by Utah Prep teammate JJ Mandaquit, #1 2026 recruit Tyran Stokes, 7-foot-4 Purdue big man Daniel Jacobsen, and other talented players either from the high school or college ranks. The 12-man roster can be seen here.

Team USA is the favorite to win the tournament, but will have competition from other talented countries. Top challengers are expected to be Germany, Serbia, and Australia.

Below is the schedule for the Team USA’s first three games. The knockout stage begins July 2. All games are broadcast on YouTube on the official FIBA YouTube page.
