Former BYU Baseballer Daniel Schneemann Has Babe Ruth-Like Moment in MLB

BYU alum Daniel Schneemann is playing some great baseball for the Cleveland Guardians. For at least one game, he emulated the Sultan of Swat himself.

BYU Baseball doesn’t get the same coverage and recognition as the football and basketball teams on campus. Certainly, a few all-timers have come through Provo and donned the Y for the baseball team and made a huge impact in the sport.

Players like Dale Murphy, Wally Joyner, Jack Morris, and Rick Aguilera all attended BYU and went on to All-Star and even Hall of Fame careers in Major League Baseball.

However, it’s been something of a down era for the Cougars in MLB. BYU has not had an alum be an All-Star in Major League Baseball since Aguilera represented the Minnesota Twins in 1993.

While he might not become an All-Star this season, Cleveland Guardians utility man Daniel Schneemann is making about as much noise in the MLB world as any BYU grad since Wally Joyner in the late 1990s.

Schneemann only made his MLB debut last season. The San Diego, CA native was something of a utility bench piece for the 2024 Guardians.

This season, he has been something entirely different to start the year. His recent hot streak at the plate has him in same sentence as Babe Ruth. Yes, that Babe Ruth. On May 3, the Guardians played against the Toronto Blue Jays. With Cleveland trailing 3-0 in the top of the eighth, Schneemann lined a solo home run to cut the deficit to two.

He wasn’t done. Still trailing 3-1 in the top of the ninth, down to the team’s last strike before losing, Schneemann faced a pivotal moment with the bases loaded.

He unloaded a go-ahead grand slam that propelled the Guardians to a dramatic, comeback victory on the road.

Daniel Schneemann hit a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth and drove in all FIVE of the Guardians runs.

(Via: @CleGuardians) pic.twitter.com/C3xKXS5k6I
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) May 3, 2025

His clutch late-inning heroics made MLB history.

Daniel Schneemann of the @CleGuardians is the second player in MLB history to have a multi-HR game on the road that included a game-winning grand slam with his team trailing and down to its final out.

The other was Boston's Babe Ruth on July 18, 1919. pic.twitter.com/QqRdcIKSvz
— OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) May 3, 2025

He has not been just a one-game wonder, either.

Schneemann seems to have established himself as a valuable part of the Guardians’ offense. In 28 games so far this season, he has five homers, which is second-most on the team. His .939 OPS leads the team and ranks 16th-best in all of baseball.

The Guardians are playing good baseball as a team, with a 22-15 record, second place in the AL Central division and currently the top AL Wild Card team. Schneemann has been a huge part of that team’s success.

Not only is he hitting well, but he has already played five different positions. He is the ultimate utility man but apparently also can hit like Babe Ruth (for one game, at least).

Breaking Down Nate Pickens’ Decision to Commit to BYU

IG: nate_pickens

BYU added another piece to its roster when UC Riverside guard Nate Pickens committed to BYU on Wednesday.

I spoke to his agent, Ryan Murphy, on why Nate committed to BYU.

“BYU is an unbelievable opportunity. Nate has the chance to play alongside the #1 draft pick (AJ Dybantsa), who Nate can complement. Kevin Young is a great and proven coach; what he did this year is incredible.”

Ryan went on to say that BYU sees Nate as both the backup point guard behind Rob Wright and someone that can play off the ball. Nate is also a high-end defender who BYU envisions can guard the opposing team’s best guard. Nate chose BYU over other finalists UCLA, Georgia, and a return to UC Riverside. Ryan told me that BYU was in the same range as each of the NIL offers Nate received.

Pickens should be a veteran presence on the bench who will be a senior this coming season. He averaged over 9 points each of his last two seasons at UC Riverside and improved his three-point shooting to 39% this past season. Nate largely played as a secondary ball handler next to UC Riverside star point guard Barrington Hargress in the starting lineup, but he played the point guard at times and can play either guard spot. He had the ball in his hands a lot at UCR and can play off the bounce or catch-and-shoot. BYU coaches made clear to Nate they value his defensive presence as a physical 6-foot-3 guard.

In some ways I see similar to a Trey Stewart type of role. Nate will play more point guard than Trey did and is a better offensive player, but I think Nate will have a similar defensive impact. What Nate won’t be able to replicate is the leadership Trey brought as a four-year guy at BYU, but he has better offensive skill than Trey did.

I’ll do a roster deep dive later, but Nate’s addition just about wraps up BYU’s roster for the upcoming season. BYU has high-end NBA talent to go along with a bench that has potential to go five or six guys deep. I expect Nate to be part of BYU’s primary rotation behind Rob Wright and on the floor simultaneously as Rob when BYU wants additional ball handling on the floor.

Pickens shot 47-120 from three and just under half of his attempts were from distance. Pickens can also create his own shot off the dribble and finish above the rim. He was 12th in the Big West in free throw rate.

BYU got an up close view of Pickens when he dropped 18 points in the Marriot Center earlier in the season. Pickens shot 6-10 from the field and 3-5 from three in a 86-80 BYU win.

With multiple playmakers already on the roster, BYU was looking for an additional ball handler and back court depth. Pickens isn’t necessarily a true point guard, but he has the skill set of a combo guard and won’t necessarily need to be a true facilitator at BYU. Rob Wright is the clear starting point guard who will average 30+ minutes per game. AJ Dybantsa will have the ball in his hands a lot, and wing Kennard Davis was the defacto point guard often times for Southern Illinois and has that skill set. Pickens will get time as BYU’s backup point guard, but won’t need to handle a full playmaking load with guys like that on the court with him. I expect him to get time at point guard and as a secondary ball handler on the floor as someone who can create off the dribble and create offense with the ball in his hands.

Pickens will be a senior this upcoming season.

You can watch highlights of Pickens below.

BYU basketball is heading to the world’s most famous arena.

Jon Rothstein reported Monday that BYU will play Clemson in the Jimmy V Classic Tuesday, December 9. The event is held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and will be part of a double-header with UConn-Florida. Both games in the Jimmy V Classic last season were on ESPN.

Clemson was a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament this past season and was upset round one by McNeese State. They made the Elite 8 the year prior. They brought in LDS players Carter Welling and Jake Wahlin to their team from the transfer portal this offseason.

The Big 12 is moving from 20 to 18 conference games next season, meaning BYU has 13 non-conference games to fill plus two exhibitions. BYU is working to put together a non-conference schedule that is much more challenging than last season that will prepare them for Big 12 play and allow them to compete for a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Below is what we know about BYU’s non-conference schedule so far.

Exhibitions

New rules now allow D1 teams to play each other in front of fans and using the revenue however they want; previously, these had to be “secret” scrimmages or the revenue had to go towards charity.

BYU’s first exhibition will be at Nebraska as part of a home-and-home series. Sources tell me this is scheduled for Friday, October 17. This will be the first chance fans get to see AJ Dybantsa and company against another team. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Big 10 Network picks up this game. This is the day before BYU football hosts Utah in Provo.

BYU is working on one more exhibition game that will either be in Provo or Salt Lake City and is expected to be versus a Power Conference team. These exhibitions do not go towards the teams’ record.

Non-Conference Games

Below is what we know about BYU’s non-conference schedule

Villanova, November 3 (Las Vegas) — This is the first day of the college basketball season and will be a double-header with Florida-Arizona.

ESPN Events Invitational, Thanksgiving Week (Orlando) — BYU will play two of Dayton, Georgetown, or Miami

Clemson, December 9 (New York City)

at Wyoming (Laramie) — This is scheduled for next season. However, I would not be surprised if BYU buys this out.

BYU is also working on other games. Sources have told me that BYU is in talks with several teams about a game in Boston as part of a AJ Dybantsa homecoming. Outlets have reported BYU has been in discussions with UConn, but multiple sources have told me that BYU is unlikely to play the Huskies. BYU has been talking with teams from the ACC, Big East, and Atlantic 10 about a potential game. I could see a team like Syracuse or Notre Dame being a potential opponent.

BYU has also been working on a series that starts in the Delta Center. BYU has had discussions with UNC and Michigan, according to industry sources, although I haven’t heard any movement on those in the last month. Another team that I’ve heard industry buzz in the last week is Wisconsin. Sources have told me that both schools have been discussing a series that starts in Utah. BYU, of course, beat the Badgers in a thrilling round of 32 game.

BYU will add more resume-building games and will then fill out the schedule with “buy” games.

A 6-foot-1 wide receiver and returner, Bachmeier was one of the most productive freshman in the country in 2023 before a quiet sophomore season in 2024. As a true freshman in 2023, Bachmeier led all Pac-12 Freshman in receptions and receiving yards, amassing 36 receptions for 409 yards. He had two receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown as well.

Bachmeier had a quiet sophomore season in 2024, catching 10 passes for 67 yards. He did, however, receive time as a kick and punt returner. His highlight of the season was a 90-yard punt return touchdown in Stanford’s season opener versus Cal Poly.

Bachmeier was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2023 and certainly lived up to that billing as a true freshman. He was passed up on the depth chart in 2024, and BYU will hope that he can show the form that he did in 2023. Stanford as a team struggled in 2024 and never got consistent QB play, and Bachmeier will be surrounded by better talent at BYU.

After the graduation of Darrius Lassiter and transfer of Keelan Marion, Bachmeier will have a chance to be one of BYU’s top three or four receivers on the depth chart. If he builds on the promise he showed as a freshman, Tiger will be a big piece for BYU’s offense this season. Bachmeier can play both on the outside and in the slot, and the latter is where he could find a bigger role with Chase Roberts and Jojo Phillips as the top two outside receivers. He also will have a chance to replace Keelan Marion as BYU’s primary returner and could push Parker Kingston for punt returner reps.

A member of the 2025 recruiting class, Bachmeier graduated early and enrolled at Stanford back in January. Stanford fired head coach Troy Taylor back in March, which caused Bachmeier to enter the transfer portal. Out of high school Bachmeier was rated as a 4-star prospect by 247 Sports’ composite rankings and by Rivals. He chose Stanford over other offers from Georgia, Alabama, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and others.

Bachmeier will immediately come in and compete for the backup QB job behind senior Jake Retzlaff. McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet will have a leg up on Bear due to their time in the system, but Bear has the talent to work his way up the depth chart.

Listed at 6-foot-2, Bear is a dual-threat QB who can do damage from the pocket or with his legs. Bachmeier shows the ability to not only run for yards off of scrambles, but also step up in the pocket or roll out either way and find a receiver down field.

Bear is the younger brother of former Boise State QB Hank Bachmeier. He visited BYU the last couple days with his brother, Tiger. Tiger is also transfer from Stanford who caught 46 combined passes combined the passes the past two seasons. A commitment from Tiger could be coming shortly as well and give BYU a QB-WR brother duo. Tiger will be a junior this coming season.

Bear may need time this year to learn BYU’s system and develop, but he’ll be a strong candidate to replace Jake Retzlaff as BYU’s starting QB in 2026 as a redshirt freshman or true sophomore.

You can watch highlights of Bachmeier below.

Tyler Mrus Discusses Decision to Commit to BYU

Idaho transfer Tyler Mrus committed to BYU on Thursday, giving BYU an additional sharpshooter to pair with some elite offensive pieces. Mrus is one of the best three-point shooters in transfer portal, shooting 38% from distance and knocking down 73 threes on the season. I expect his shooting to transfer very well to BYU — although he will be going against better competition, he will be surrounded by elite offensive pieces and should have a lot of clean looks.

Mrus is a native of Mill Creek, Washington and started his career at Division Two University of Alaska Fairbanks, who Tyler told me was his only full-ride scholarship offer out of high school. Tyler averaged 12 points in his lone season at Alaska Fairbanks and then transferred to Idaho where he spent two seasons. Tyler played just two games his first year at Idaho and received a medical redshirt after suffering a season-ending ankle injury. He bounced back this past season by starting all 31 of Idaho’s games and averaging 9.7 points in just under 30 minutes per game.

Listed at 6-foot-7, Tyler has good wing size and Kevin Young sees him as a 3-and-D type player. Tyler detailed to me below why he chose BYU. He was accompanied by his mom and girlfriend on his visit.

“I committed to BYU because of the opportunity it was for playing in front of such a passionate fan base, playing with an amazing group of guys, and a chance to compete for a national championship. Coach Young envisions me as an elite shooter and defender. Being really able to space to court and knock down shots.

Loved my visit; it was a dream come true. Came from really humble beginnings in Alaska. Just walking around campus and around the facilities, it’s really what you dream to be a part of as a kid. Not sure when I’m going to come to Provo but hopefully as soon as possible excited and ready to put the work in build our way to a championship. Some of the other schools that where recruiting me were Georgia Tech, East Carolina, Maryland, VCU, Loyola Chicago, Tulsa and Seton Hall.”

BYU Boasts Best Football and Basketball Combo in the Big 12 for 2024-2025

Both football and basketball are finished for the academic year. It’s clear that one team stood above the rest when considering both sports, and that’s the BYU Cougars.

Football and men’s basketball- they’re called the “big money” sports in college athletics. Usually, if schools can find a way to thrive in both, they’re set financially for years to come. It also brings in the most eyeballs of any other college athletics combined.

Since joining the Big 12, BYU has taken their opportunity for more exposure and revenue and ran with it. BYU is thriving.

And for the 2024-2025 “academic year,” counting 2024 football and 2024-2025 men’s basketball, no athletics program in the Big 12 Conference tops BYU.

Both BYU’s football and basketball teams finished No. 13 in their respective final AP polls. Only Houston had more combined football and basketball wins than BYU, however, for the Cougars in red, that was heavily skewed by a stellar basketball season that saw them reach the national title game. Their football team won four games and missed a bowl. BYU beat them head-to-head on the gridiron.

BYU was the only Big 12 team to finish inside the top 15 in both football and basketball.

Did a few football and basketball teams reach higher heights individually than BYU? Sure. But when considering both sports together, BYU is the superior athletics program.

In football, sure Arizona State made the College Football Playoff after winning the Big 12. That included a head-to-head win over BYU late in the year. They even gave Texas a scare in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals.

Of the football teams, the Sun Devils had the best season, finishing No. 7 in the final AP poll after making the playoff.

However, their basketball team left a lot to be desired. They went 13-20 and missed the NCAA Tournament by a large margin. The Cougars beat them on the hardwood both times they squared off.

Let’s not forget to mention the Utah Utes both missed a bowl game and missed the NCAA Tournament. They are one of just four Big 12 teams that did that (along with Cincinnati, UCF, and Oklahoma State).

The only team that gives BYU a run for their money here is Iowa State.

The Cyclones had the inside track to win the Big 12 in football, before getting utterly smashed by ASU in the title game. Still, they finished 11-3 with a final ranking of 15th, after winning the Pop Tarts Bowl over Miami.

In basketball, they won 25 games, just one less than BYU. They made the NCAA Tournament and won their first round matchup. However, where they fail to beat BYU is two-fold in basketball.

First, BYU went 2-0 against Iowa State in basketball, including a win in Ames, one of the toughest venues for a road team to win in the entire country. Then the Cougars sealed their dominance over Iowa State by beating them again in the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Also, BYU got farther into the NCAA Tournament than the Cyclones, making it to the Sweet 16. They finished 13th, four spots higher than Iowa State.

Those two teams were the only ones to finish ranked in both football and men’s basketball. They also were the only two teams to both win a bowl game and make the NCAA Tournament. While they did not meet up in football, BYU clearly won the upper hand in basketball.

Kansas might have ruined BYU’s special season in football, but BYU returned the favor in basketball by handing the Jayhawks one of their worst losses in program history. Plus, the Cougars got farther in the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, Kansas missed a bowl game.
