20.
BYU had a late addition to the portal as Noah Waterman put his name in the portal. The deadline to enter the portal was May 1, but BYU players had until May 12 to enter due to the NCAA rule that players have 30 days to enter after their head coach leaves — Mark Pope was officially hired by Kentucky April 12. Noah officially informed Kevin Young Thursday night that he would enter the portal and submitted the necessary paperwork over the weekend.

 21.
A 6-foot-11 forward, Waterman has one year remaining after receiving a medical redshirt from his freshman season at Niagara granting him a sixth year of eligibility. If Waterman doesn’t return to BYU, he is the fourth scholarship player to enter the portal joining Marcus Adams Jr, Aly Khalifa, and Jaxson Robinson.

 22.
After one season at Niagara and two at Detroit Mercy, Waterman spent the last two seasons at BYU. A stretch four, Noah made a big jump from his first season at BYU, averaging 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds on 37% shooting from three. He shot 57-154 from distance and scored in double digits in 15 games. He started all 33 games he played.

 23.
Noah’s departure at this point is no doubt a blow for BYU; he was not pushed out by the staff and had been planning to return to BYU until recently. Waterman was expected to start at the four and Kevin Young had high hopes for Noah. Noah likely will get a sizable NIL deal from a team, which was the main reason for his entrance into the portal. Sources tell me that a return to BYU is a potential option.

 24.
UCLA transfer Berke Buyuktuncel becomes an even bigger priority for BYU with Noah’s departure.

 44.
BYU has official visits set with two players.

BYU basketball has two recruiting visits set, sources tell me. France big man Maxim Logue is set to arrive to Utah Sunday night for a Monday visit and UCLA transfer Berke Buyuktuncel is set to arrive Monday night for his visit.

 45.
Berke Buyuktuncel

 46.
The 6-foot-9 Turkish forward was hobbled by injuries his freshman season, but he showed flashes why is a NBA prospect. Berke started 8 of 26 games he played in for the Bruins, averaging 4.5 and 2.5 boards. Berke can put the ball on the floor and has the ability to knock down the three ball. One industry source compared him to a modern day Toni Kukoc.

 47.
Berke is a high upside player with NBA potential; in ESPN’s latest 2025 NBA mock draft they projected him to go 42 overall. Berke was rated a 4-star recruit by 247 Sports in the 2023 class and the #36 overall recruit. He was impressive in international play before his time in UCLA and should be a big addition in whatever program he lands at next.

 48.
Berke can play either the 4 or 3 spot. He played mostly the 3 in international play before UCLA, but defensively may be better suited to play the 4 in a high major league. His shooting and ability to put the ball on the floor allow him to play the three or four on offense, but I think in the Big 12 he would matchup better with fours. Based on who BYU likely has leaving before the transfer portal deadline May 12 (deadline for BYU players), I think Berke could get a lot of minutes and start at the four. UCLA was a tough spot to him as he was ineligible to start the year and battled injury, but he is poised to break through as a sophomore and capitalize on the immense promise he showed as an international prospect.

 49.
Berke is slated to visit Nebraska after BYU and sources tell me BYU and Nebraska are the two favorites. Berke knows former BYU player Elijah Bryant, who plays professionally in Turkey and has played against the Turkish native. Elijah has been talking with Berke about BYU.

 50.
You can watch highlights of Berke below.

 51.

 52.
Maxim Logue

 53.
The 6-foot-9, 18-year-old French player is an elite athlete. Logue plays both the 4 and 5 spots in international play but likely projects more as a 5 man at the college level. Logue projects as a rim-running 5 on offense and a rim protector on defense. Logue is more of a developmental piece, but he would provide depth early on at BYU and develop more as his career progresses. Maxim currently plays for the club Paris Basketball.

 54.
Logue is currently on a visit to Creighton. He may not be as high of a target as some other players on BYU’s board, but he has the body and athleticism to turn into a really good player at the college level.

 55.
As you can see from the first clip below and his highlights, Logue’s athleticism gives him high upside.

 94.
 95.
BYU has their work cut out for them this football season. Which matchups stand out?

BYU football enters their second year in the Big 12 Conference. The conference itself underwent yet another change, welcoming Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, and Colorado to the fold. The conference is now at 16 teams, including a few new programs very familiar with BYU.

 96.
With the 2024 schedule set, which matchups stand out for BYU? Let’s dive into some superlatives to highlight the biggest parts of BYU’s upcoming football schedule.

 97.
Best non-conference game: at SMU Mustangs (Sep. 6)

 98.
The Mustangs put together a solid season in 2023, finishing 11-3. They won the American Athletic Conference in their final year of membership, with an undefeated 8-0 record. Now, this is considered a “Power 4” matchup with SMU entering the ACC.

 99.
Certainly, there is history here as well. SMU and BYU played in one of the most epic bowl games in college football history in the 1980 Holiday Bowl, what is now dubbed as “The Miracle Bowl.” Famously, BYU QB Jim McMahon led a furious comeback victory after BYU trailed SMU 45-25 with just four minutes left in the game.

 100.
The other bowl game these two programs played in, the 2022 New Mexico Bowl, also was something of a thriller. BYU won 24-23 after stopping SMU’s attempt for a game-winning two point conversion.

 101.
Given the history of the two programs, with SMU’s rise to being worthy of an ACC invite, this will be an intriguing game in Dallas.

 102.
Most favorable FBS matchup: at Wyoming Cowboys (Sep. 14)

 103.
Obviously, the most favorable matchup on the schedule for BYU is FCS foe Southern Illinois. However, BYU plays another winnable game against Wyoming. The Cowboys finished last year 9-4 and this game is in Laramie, so it is nothing automatic for the Cougars. They beat Texas Tech last year.

 104.
This just displays how difficult BYU’s schedule truly is. Their easiest FBS game might be a road game against a former Mountain West Conference rival, where weird things can happen.

 105.
One variable is that Wyoming is introducing a new head coach in Jay Sawvel after 10-year coach Craig Bohl stepped down.

 106.
Biggest home game: Kansas State Wildcats (Sep. 21)

 107.
Kansas State and BYU square off for the first time since they played in the Cotton Bowl following the 1996 season. The Wildcats have not visited Provo since 1977.

 108.
This year, they do so on the heels of a fantastic 2023 campaign. They got all the way up to No. 15 in the polls and finished 9-4 and 18th in the final AP poll.

 109.
Quarterback Avery Johnson will likely lead the explosive Kansas State attack that ranked 23rd in the FBS in yards per game last year. BYU’s defense will be tested.

 110.
Given the early schedule of Kansas State and their position in the preseason poll, the Wildcats will likely travel to Provo ranked inside the Top 25.

 111.
Biggest Revenge Game: Oklahoma State (Oct. 18)

 112.
Unfortunately, there are several teams BYU can put on their list for revenge from the 2023 season. The most bitterly disappointing game was the final one in Stillwater, when BYU was just a few yards away from sealing the win and bowl eligibility. Instead, they fell short in double-overtime after leading the game 24-6 at halftime.

 113.
That was about as frustrating a way to end a BYU football season as we can remember. They were so close to earning a bowl bid in Year One of the Big 12, only to falter at the last second.

 114.
Mike Gundy navigated an up-and-down season for the Pokes which finished strong, landing them 16th in the final AP poll at 10-4. They even made it to the Big 12 Championship Game before falling to Texas.

 115.
Payback will be on the minds of the Cougars when the Cowboys come to Provo. Oklahoma State has never played in Provo. But revenge won’t be given easily, as Oklahoma State once again looks to have a solid team.

 116.
Biggest road game (besides Utah): at UCF Knights (Oct. 26)

 117.
Aside from the obviously daunting trip up the road to play the Utah Utes, they also hop across the country and head to Orlando. That in of itself is a tough ask. Plus, UCF is coming off of a better inaugural Big 12 season than BYU. They went 6-6 before losing to Georgia Tech in the Gasparilla Bowl.

 118.
Their quarterback should look familiar to BYU as the Knights scored transfer KJ Jefferson from Arkansas. He is very talented with an NFL-sized body and already has played BYU twice.

 119.
BYU will have played Arizona and Oklahoma State in back-to-back weeks before making that long trip to Florida. UCF might get a BYU team a bit worn out. The Cougars will be tested mentally in this game, with a bye week leading into the matchup with Utah looming right after.

 120.
UCF is not a team BYU can afford to take lightly.

 121.
Toughest matchup: at Utah Utes (Nov. 9)

 122.
Let’s cut to the chase. BYU and Utah are on a collision course for a contentious renewal of The Holy War with both programs residing in the same conference again. Not only do these two teams have one of the most historic rivalries in the sport, but the Utes are also set to be really good in 2024.

 123.
Quarterback Cam Rising returns to Utah in hopes of winning the Big 12 and earning a bid in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. They finished last year 8-5 after suffering numerous injuries, especially at quarterback. They are not too far removed from back-to-back PAC-12 titles.

 124.
If the degree of difficulty was not high enough for a BYU team eager to improve off of their disappointing 5-7 season, this game is at Rice-Eccles Stadium. That has been a house of horrors for BYU, who has not won in Salt Lake since 2006, when John Beck found Jonny Harline in the endzone as time expired.

 125.
Finally, this game will count in the conference standings once again.

 126.

 127.

 167.
Rated a 3-Star recruit by 247, Davis signed with BYU back in November. Davis is an explosive athlete who can finish above the rim and is an underrated passer.

 168.
I don’t want to speak for Isaac and go into details to why he is no longer at BYU, but sometimes conversations with coaches can cause both sides to consider what the future holds. BYU’s new coaching staff had a different vision for Isaac than what he was hoping for.

 169.
With Davis’ departure, BYU has 9 scholarship players lined up for next season. BYU can add up to 13 scholarship players. BYU is active in the transfer portal and international market to fill out the roster; Kevin Young has deep international connections from his time in the NBA. I mentioned some of BYU’s targets on Sunday.

 201.
BYU landed its first transfer portal addition of the offseason as Utah’s Keba Keita announced on his IG his commitment to BYU. Keba has two years of eligibility remaining. Keba is the second new addition under Kevin Young, joining 2024 signee Brody Kozlowski. He chose BYU over Mississippi State, Texas, Louisville, Wisconsin, Arizona State, Oregon, Kentucky, Kansas State, and others.

 218.

 219.
 220.

 221.
Keba is 6-foot-8, but is primarily a big man and plays bigger than his size due to his athleticism. Think of him as kind of a more polished version of Atiki Ally Atiki. Keita started in 13 of 35 games for Utah this season, averaging 8.3 points, 5.4 boards, and 1.1 blocks in just 16 minutes per game. According to KenPom, Keba was second in Pac-12 play in offensive rebounding percentage, 10th in defensive rebounding percentage, 5th in block percentage and 8th in fouls drawn per 40 minutes. Keba average just 16 minutes per game in part due to foul trouble; he averaged 5.3 fouls per 40 minutes.

 222.
Keba’s game and skill set complements Fouss. Fouss is more of a back-to-the basket, low-block scorer while Keba is a bigger threat as a rim runner and scoring second chance points. Keita will be BYU’s best rim protector and excels and covering a lot of space around the rim. He is an incredibly explosive athlete that will be able to compete every night with many of the front courts BYU will see in the Big 12. Kevin Young has said he wants a rim-running big in his system and Keba perfectly fits that description.

 223.
Some may scoff at Keba’s size and wonder how he can be a center. Size is obviously important, but many Big 12 teams excelled with smaller centers. Big 12 Champion Houston’s starting frontcourt was 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-7 and Texas Tech dismantled BYU in the Big 12 tournament with a 6-foot-7 guy starting at the five. Keba had some massive NIL offers from teams that all wanted him to play the five. I anticipate BYU to add one additional big, which could come via the international market.

 224.
You can watch highlights of Keba below.

 225.

 245.
Kevin Young has given several offers out to high school players, and the latest is 2026 Timpview HS wing Dean Reuckert. Dean is currently rated a high 4-star recruit by 247 Sports and the 28th rated recruit in the 2026 class.

 254.
 255.

 256.
A 6-foot-7 wing, Dean was one of the top high school players in the state of Utah as a sophomore. Dean is a high-level athlete that can finish above the rim and score off the bounce or the catch. He averaged nearly 20 points as a sophomore and could be the best player in the state of Utah next season. Based on where he is rated currently, he is on pace to go down as one of the highest rated LDS recruits in the last 25 years.

 257.
I talked with Dean below about his recent offer from new head coach Kevin Young and his thoughts on BYU.

 258.

 259.
“Coach Young reached out to my coach and set up a time for me to call him. Coaches can’t call me yet. We talked a little about how he’s known my high school coach for a long time, he asked me how last weekend went for me on the Adidas circuit. Coach Young seems great, I’m looking forward to getting to know him better.

 260.
I think it’s pretty cool that BYU hired Coach Burgess. I’ve known him for a long time because my sister played volleyball with his daughter. I’m excited, he is a great coach.

 261.
I grew up a big BYU fan because I grew up right here close to BYU. I was also a huge Jimmer fan and I always wanted to be like him. I used to watch Jimmer highlights all the time.

 262.
Right now I’m considering every school. Recruiting gets a little more serious this summer so I’ll keep developing relationships and talking to everyone.”

 263.

 290.
 291.
After the Suns exit from the NBA playoffs and Big 12 meetings in Phoenix, BYU head coach Kevin Young has finally been able to put 100% of his focus on BYU the last several days.

 292.
BYU has several targets and contingency plans, but below are a few of the top targets the staff is eyeing.

 293.
Keba Keita, Utah

 294.
Demand is high and supply is relatively low for big men, and Keba Keita saw the result of that as soon as he entered the portal late on May 1. Keba received significant NIL offers from schools, but BYU remains a strong possibility. Multiple sources tell me that Keba is coming to BYU Monday for an official visit. Keba’s local ties (he went to Wasatch Academy), friendship with Fouss and other players, and of course his relationship with new assistant Chris Burgess are all big factors in BYU’s favor. BYU has some competition, but as of right now I would call BYU the favorites to land Keba.

 295.
I’m a big fan of Keba’s game.

 296.
He is just 6-foot-8, but he plays much bigger with his wingspan and athleticism. Keba is primarily a 5 and brings a different skillset than Fouss. Fouss can score on the low-block, while Keba gets his points from rim running and offensive rebounding. Kevin Young will likely operate a lot of pick-and-roll, and Keba would fit right in as a rim runner.

 297.
You can watch highlights of BYU below.

 298.

 299.
Chaz Lanier, North Florida

 300.
Lanier is someone you may not be familiar with, but he is one of the most productive guards in the country. 247 Sports rates him as the 10th best transfer this cycle; for context, Jaxson Robinson is rated as the 35th best transfer.

 301.
A 6-foot-4 guard, Lanier combines both production and efficiency. This last season he averaged 19.7 points, 4.8 boards, and 1.8 assists on 51% shooting from the floor, 44% from three, and 88% from the foul line. Lanier does that with volume. He averaged 7.5 threes per game and made 106 on the season. His 44% 3-point shooting was 5th best in the country.

 302.
Sources tell me that BYU had a Zoom call with Lanier on Sunday (today) and has a legitimate chance with Lanier. Kevin Young has shown Lanier what he did with Devin Booker and envisions Lanier having that type of role at BYU. Young’s NBA experience and pedigree is a huge draw to Lanier as he tries to improve his NBA prospects, and BYU is putting together a competitive NIL offer as well. Lanier has a lot of suitors from top schools, but sources tell me BYU is right in there among the top schools to land Lanier; Kentucky and Tennessee are pushing hard as well and are considered two of the favorites. The next step BYU needs to hit to land Lanier is getting him on campus for a visit.

 303.
Lanier has one year of eligibility remaining. If BYU were to land Lanier, he’d be a featured part of the offense and contend for All Big 12 honors.

 304.
You can watch highlights of Lanier below.

 305.

 306.
Other to Watch

 307.

 308. Berke Buyuktuncel, UCLA — The 6-foot-9 Turkish forward was hobbled by injuries his freshman season, but he showed flashes why is a NBA prospect. Berke started 8 of 26 games he played in for the Bruins, averaging 4.5 and 2.5 boards. Berke can put the ball on the floor and has the ability to knock down the three ball.

 309.
Berke is a high upside player with NBA potential; in ESPN’s latest 2025 NBA mock draft they projected him to go 42 overall. Berke may not be on the top of BYU’s board but he is a guy they are pursuing.

 310.

 311.

 312. Elijah Crawford, Stanford Signee — A 6-foot-1 point guard, Crawford signed with Stanford back in November as part of the 2023 class. Crawford is rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and 247’s composite rankings. Crawford is still signed with Stanford, but he signed with the previous staff when Brandon Dunson was an assistant who led his recruitment. If Crawford or Stanford’s current staff has different thoughts, BYU is one to watch for here due to Dunson’s relationship with Crawford.

 313.

 314.

 315. International Players — BYU is talking with several international players. International players typically don’t sign until summer, so it could be until June or July until we hear of a signing. Sources have told me BYU is keeping at least one spot held for an international player, but there could be more depending on who BYU adds in the transfer portal. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the international players is a big man.

 335.
After former Utah Assistant Chris Burgess was hired by BYU Wednesday as an assistant, Utah forward/center Keba Keita entered the transfer portal right before the midnight eastern deadline.

 336.

 337.

 338.
Utah sophomore center Keba Keita has entered the transfer portal after averaging 8.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game this season.https://t.co/ROQrFybaxW
— NCAA Transfer Portal (@RivalsPortal) May 2, 2024
 339.

 340.
 341.
 342.

 343.
A graduate of Wasatch Academy and native of Mali, Keba played two seasons at Utah and will be a junior this coming season.

 344.
Keba is an uber-athletic big man that is great on the glass, a fantastic secondary rim protector, and a very good rim runner. Jump shooting is not part of his game, but he excels at the other stuff.

 345.
What are BYU’s Chances?

 346.
I don’t think it’s coincidence that Keba entered the portal after the Burgess news. Burgess was his position coach for two years at Utah. Keba is very close with Fouss as both are natives of Mali, and he knows many of the current BYU players. He’ll surely get good NIL offers in the portal, but I anticipate BYU would be right at or towards the top of the list if they aggressively pursue him.

 347.
Keba does a lot of things really well, but he is a 6-foot-8 center. He has the athleticism where you could maybe put him at the four to guard on the perimeter at times, but he is primarily a 5 man. Fouss is already undersized as a 6-foot-6 five man, and Keba doesn’t help BYU’s size deficiency despite the things he does well.

 348.
I don’t know what Kevin Young is thinking, but I would not be surprised if he is looking to add a 5 man with more traditional size. Ideally, I’m sure BYU would like to add Keba and another talented 5 man, but adding Keba could limit the quality of big men BYU could add; would a quality 7-footer want to come to BYU when Fouss and Keba are already there? would Keba want insurances that BYU wouldn’t add another big man to play over him?

 349.
All are questions to consider. I’m just a dude, but if it was up to me I would make a push to bring in Keba. Him and Fouss are both undersized and may not be able to play on the floor a lot together, but Keba is talented and bring a different skill set than Fouss. If BYU were to add Keba and another stretch big that can play both the 4 and the 5, those would be great additions to BYU’s front court.

 350.
We’ll see what Kevin Young has up his sleeve in the coming weeks.

 351.
