While the sight may be picturesque, the benefits and necessity of leaf removal extend beyond aesthetics. Let’s explore why leaf removal is not just a seasonal chore but a crucial step in maintaining a healthy and thriving outdoor environment.

 73.
1. Lawn Health and Vigor:

 74.
Leaves, although beautiful in their own right, can become a hindrance to the health of your lawn. A thick layer of fallen leaves can block sunlight and inhibit the growth of grass. This can result in patches of dead grass, mold growth, and an overall decline in the vibrancy of your lawn. By removing leaves promptly, you allow your grass to breathe and receive the sunlight it needs to thrive.

 75.
2. Preventing Pest and Disease Issues:

 76.
Leaves create a cozy, damp environment that is conducive to the growth of pests and diseases. Piles of damp leaves can attract insects and rodents while providing a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. Leaf removal acts as a preventive measure, reducing the likelihood of infestations and diseases that could harm your plants and compromise the overall health of your landscape.

 77.
3. Preserving Soil Health:

 78.
Leaves, as they decompose, release organic matter into the soil. While this can be beneficial in moderation, an excessive layer of decomposing leaves may alter the pH of the soil and deprive it of essential nutrients. Regular leaf removal helps maintain a balanced soil composition, ensuring that your plants receive the nutrients they need for optimal growth.

 79.
4. Enhancing Curb Appeal:

 80.
A well-maintained yard contributes significantly to the overall curb appeal of your home. Neighbors and passersby are more likely to appreciate a tidy and manicured lawn. Leaf removal not only ensures a clean and well-kept appearance but also allows your landscaping efforts to shine through, showcasing the beauty of your carefully chosen plants and garden features.

 81.
5. Time and Cost Savings:

 82.
While it may seem like a time-consuming task, regular leaf removal can save you both time and money in the long run. Addressing the issue promptly prevents the need for more extensive and costly lawn renovations later on. Investing a bit of time in leaf removal during the fall can spare you from the headache of dealing with lawn problems in the spring.

 83.
Voss Can Help You

 84.
In the grand scheme of landscaping, leaf removal is more than just a seasonal chore – it’s a fundamental practice that contributes to the vitality and beauty of your outdoor space. By recognizing the benefits of leaf removal and incorporating it into your routine, you’re not just maintaining a tidy lawn; you’re fostering an environment where plants can thrive, pests are deterred, and your home’s curb appeal is maximized. Embrace the autumn ritual of leaf removal, and watch as your outdoor space transforms into a haven of health and beauty.

 102.

 103.
Burning Birch Wood

 104.

 105.
Birches are small to medium-sized trees that primarily grow in the northern hemisphere and colder climates. Birch wood can come in various colors ranging from gray, white, black, silver, and yellow birch all describe different species of birch. In general, you’re just looking for any birch if you are searching your local hardware store or wood deposits in hunt of favorable smelling firewood.

 106.
The smell of birch firewood is a subtle, sweet smell that will fill your room or campsite. Some individuals claim that it is nature’s incense, giving off such a satisfying aroma that they will go out of there way to specifically find this type of wood. Birch is a soft wood, but, don’t let that scare you from attempting to burn it at home. It may burn relatively faster than harder woods, but, is excellent for kindling as it ignites very easily.

 107.

 108.
Burning Apple Wood

 109.

 110.
Apples and apple trees are a firewood that most people are familiar with. The tree originally was cultivated in Central Asia where it’s popularity than quickly spread worldwide where its fruits became a staple to the human diet and the firewood became a staple for smoking meats. Because of its commonality, applewood is readily available in most department, hardware, and online firewood suppliers.

 111.
While apple wood is great for cooking it also works surprisingly well in your inside rack or outside camping trip. People love burning apple wood for its fragrant aroma that is reminiscent of its fruit. As apple wood is further into the hardwood family, it will burn longer and more steady than softwoods — another reason people use it for smoking, cooking, and barbecuing.

 112.

 113.

 114.
Burning Cherry Wood

 115.

 116.
Cherry trees are relatively small trees compared to some of their other, much larger brethren. A cherry tree will typically grow between 30 feet all the way up to 80 feet tall. If you are hand cutting your own firewood, cherry is one of the easiest and cleanest to split. Once divided in two, you can already smell its pleasant fragrance start to emanate from the core.

 117.
Cherry, unlike the other woods we have mentioned so far, is known for the soothing signature smell it releases as it crackles over the fire. However, cherry is also regularly used as lumber and because of this can be a bit more expensive than most. Similar to other pungent woods cherry is also regularly used as wood for smoking various food. Be sure to store your cherry wood in a dry place as it can rot and grow fungus more easily than other species.

 118.

 119.
Burning Pine Wood

 120.

 121.
Pinewood is a no-brainer for the holiday months even though burning it in your indoor fireplace comes with some controversy. For years individuals have warned about the dangers of burning pine in your indoor fireplace because of creosote buildup. The reality is that tall wood creates creosote and if you’re planning on burning pine inside we heavily suggest using it as a base or kindling in conjunction with a longer lasting hardwood.

 122.
Pine gives off a happy festive smell for your outdoor fire or home. The familiar smell will resonate with most guests and immediately invoke the holiday spirit! This is another softwood that burns well but for a longer lasting fire should be combined with a long-lasting hardwood to keep the comfy smells and warmth going all night.

 123.
Pro-Tip – Avoid Creosote: All firewoods create creosote, so it is impossible to completely avoid it. You can reduce the amount of creosote by ensuring your fireplace is seasons and completely dry before every use. Also be sure that with whatever firewood you’re using that it too is properly seasoned. Most woods take at least six months of age before they’re ready for fireplace use.

 124.

 125.
Burning Cedar Wood

 126.

 127.
Cedar is one of the most common types of woods. It has some of the most diverse family members ranging from red cedar to atlas cedar. Regardless of the type, all cedars are tall, beautiful and have become famous for decades because of the classic sweet smell that they give off. If you ask the average joe what his favorite smelling wood is they’ll probably tell you cedar and it’s for a good reason.

 128.
Like the woods mentioned prior, cedar works best as a kindling as it is a softwood that burns quick and hot. The porous wood is lightweight and contains oils that assist a fire in starting. Cedar also has the natural ability to ward off insects and other varments also making it a great wood to burn for outdoor recreational use.

 129.
Additional Firewood Questions?

 144.

Many people think that tree removal, pruning, and trimming is a “warm-weather-only” service. Truth is, it’s not. Experts actually recommend tree trimming during the late winter months right before the spring showers come.

 145.
Voss Land and Tree removes and prunes trees year round, and we are prepared to fire up the chainsaws even when the winter weather comes knocking. Gain all of the benefits of winter tree trimming this year with Voss!

 146.
Why Tree Prune in the Winter?

 147.
There are so many benefits to tree trimming in the winter. Here are plenty of reasons why you should call a tree pruning service soon:

 148.

 149.
Trees Are Dormant: The winter is exceptionally great for tree trimming because the trees are dormant, meaning their normal functions are suspended or slowed down for some time. Because they are dormant, pruning wounds will only be exposed for a short time period and will soon be fixed by new growth in the spring.

 150.
Disease is Minimized: During the winter, it is less likely for wounds to catch a disease due to such a short exposure time. Trees ultimately heal better during this season.

 151.
The Leaves Are Gone: After the leaves have fallen, you’ll be able to to see where the branches are and pinpoint exactly which areas of the tree to need trimming. Spot the damaged and dying branches to protect your tree, house and family from any safety hazards.

 152.
Results in Burst of New Growth: Pruning and trimming in the winter results in a burst of new growth in the spring. By trimming down your tree, you are leaving it with extra root and energy reserves for the next season.

 153.
Less Stress For Your Tree: Pruning trees in the late winter helps maintain their structure and beauty for years to come. Growth will not be disrupted, and winter trimming places less stress on your tree than other seasonal pruning.

 154.

 155.
Which Trees Should Be Pruned?

 156.
While certain species of trees require pruning services at specific times, most trees are perfect for trimming in the winter. Some trees that should definitely be pruned during this season include:

 157.

 158.
Bradford and Callory Pears

 159.
Crabapples

 160.
Spruce

 161.
Junipers

 162.
Sumacs

 163.
Honey Locust

 164.
Poplar

 165.

 182.

The days are shorter and the air is cooler; fall has come and passed. With fall, comes the falling of leaves. Some may have raked them up before winter set in, but if you have not, you should now. Why is it so important to remove leaves from your lawn? In short, the number of leaves on a lawn can impact the health and revival process during the winter months.

 183.
The danger of leaving your lawn covered with leaves in the winter.

 184.
Despite the many who call their lawns “dead” in the winter, this is actually a very important time for the health of your grass. Your lawn still needs the essentials during the winter: sun, moisture, and air. Your lawn still needs to breathe in the winter.

 185.
If your lawn is covered in leaves through the winter months, you run the risk of smothering your lawn. This can invite pests and diseases to your lawn, including snow mold and it can also lead to brown patches. A layer of leaves can also prevent your lawn from getting water, nutrients, sunlight, and air, effectively smothering your lawn with a thick layer of leaves.

 186.
Do you have to rake up every single leaf?

 187.
You do not have to rake up every single leaf. A few leftover leaves will not hurt your lawn. It is only when there are so many leaves that they create a layer that problems arise. If you see a lawn with absolutely no leaves, it does not mean that lawn will be healthier, it simply is an aesthetic element that that particular lawn owner wanted to achieve.

 188.
Since raking leaves in bulk can be quite the chore, we found one creative way to remove leaves quickly. For a quick, fast and efficient way to rake up your leaves, you should consider this technique. It appears to be proven to work. Let us know if it works for you!

 189.
Call VOSS to easily and simply have all your leaves removed from your yard so that your yard looks tidy and you give your lawn the best opportunity for new green grass in the spring.

The post Should you remove the leaves from your lawn for the winter? first appeared on Voss Land & Tree.

 203.

If snow and ice are in the forecast, you’re probably already thinking about having to clear it from your driveway and sidewalk. Traditionally, this might be done with a trusty shovel and a bag of rock salt. While this method is effective, it has drawbacks. After years of research on the use of rock salt to melt roadways, it has been established that sodium chloride presents a sizeable danger to the environment.

 204.
It is statistically proven that the use of rock salt to melt snow/ice on roadways does reduce the likelihood of car accidents. However, it has also shown to be a pollutant. When snow/ice melt, runoff occurs. The saltwater that is absorbed into the ground, in addition to flowing into nearby lakes, rivers, and streams, contaminates freshwater quality and supply. Salt also presents a danger to both wildlife and plant-life. Increased salt levels within the environment can affect breeding in various animals, food supply, in addition to being toxic for consumption. Soil is also drained of nutrients from excess salt infiltration — this can result in the killing of trees and plants, in conjunction with making it harder to plant and grow in the coming spring seasons. Finally, the use of rock salt is corrosive — applying the mineral to your pavement can cause damage to your walkways.

 205.
While community public works departments continue to use rock salt to treat road surfaces, other solutions are being experimented with. However, even as no new large scale treatment method has been decided on, private homeowners are able to avoid the use of rock salt with serval alternatives for small scale use. Here is a list of possible options to use this winter to melt snow and ice from your property without the need for harmful rock salt.

 206.
Alternatives to Rock Salt

 207.
Rock salt works by lowering the freezing point of water, therefore, snow and ice will melt below the threshold of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. However, several of these alternative options work in the same fashion, but without the environmental drawbacks.

 208.
Wood Ash – Leftover wood ash from your fireplace makes for a cheap and easy solution. With potassium salts, wood ash helps melt snow/ice and provide traction for footing.

 209.
Coffee Grounds – Those used coffee grounds are also a useful option. The nitrogen in the coffee grounds helps lower the freezing point. The dark color also will attract sun rays to help speed up melting.

 210.
Sugar Beet Juice – This is one of the alternative options to rock salt that several communities are testing out. Spreading sugar beet juice before a snow/ice storm will limit the ability of accumulation.

 211.
Rubbing Alcohol – Combine 2 quarts of warm water, 6 drops of dish soap, and 2 ounces of rubbing alcohol — spread on pavement areas. This solution is also useful for defrosting car windows.

 212.
Vinegar – Mixing 50 percent warm water and 50 percent vinegar will also help melt snow and ice. Shoveling soon after the application of the mixture will help speed up the process.

 230.

There are so many steps you can take to prepare your yard for the winter, but how do you take care of your landscape now? Seasonal maintenance greatly depends on the time of year, and there are many tips out there to maintain your lawn, plants, gardens, and exterior during a particular season. Here are some of Voss Landscape’s secrets to effective fall maintenance.

 231.
Lawn Maintenance

 232.
Properly overseed your lawn during the fall, and set yourself up for a greener, fuller lawn in the spring. Don’t forget to fertilize if you haven’t already. Give your lawn the nutrients it needs to protect it from drought and disease in the fall and throughout the winter. Fall is also a great time to aerate your yard. The lawn care professionals at Voss Land and Tree have all the equipment to efficiently aerate your yard and make your turf healthier for the long-run.

 233.
Rake fallen leaves to allow your lawn to gather as much of the sun’s energy before the winter hits. Huge amounts of leaves can damage your lawn and carry diseases that could destroy all of your hard work. Grab the rake and maybe even the kids, and get to work!

 234.
Plant Maintenance

 235.
Tree and shrub care in the fall is important because they need to recover from the extreme heat of the summer. First, start by mulching and watering any newly planted shrubs and plants. Also, consider trimming or pruning all of your trees and shrubs to help protect them from winter’s harsh storms.

 236.
A normal pruning includes a reshaping service to help with growth in the spring, an evaluation of storm damage risk and the removal of any dead or diseased limbs. Voss offers excellent trimming services and has all the right tools to safely prepare your trees for the winter.

 237.
Fall is also a great time to plant new trees and shrubs. The cool moist soil will allow new plants to get a head start before the cold winter months hit.

 238.
Garden Maintenance

 239.
Planting cool-season annuals and spring-flowering bulbs will ensure a pretty garden in both seasons. If you have a vegetable garden, remember to harvest your crops before the first frost. After picking and using all of your veggies, create a compost with the scraps, peels and other leftovers. Combine it with yard waste inside a bin and the material will decompose by itself.

 240.
Exterior Maintenance

 241.
There is so much you can do within this area for the fall. Drain your ponds and pools, so they are prepared for the winter’s freezing temperatures. Gather up all of the outdoor furniture, tools, and hoses and keep them in the shed or garage. Don’t forget to clean out the gutters, and brush debris off the deck and patio. Tidy up all aspects of the exterior of your home before its too cold to work outside!

From the picturesque raking of leaves, the tedious chore of gutter cleaning, and even preparing your car for the winter months, one thing you should never overlook is winterizing your sprinkler system.

 259.
What does ‘winterizing’ a sprinkler system mean and do?

 260.
What does it mean to “winterize a sprinkler system”? In short, it is when your drain the entire irrigation system of water, before the first deep freeze of the winter or fall months; not only is it important to do this process, it is crucial for avoiding cracked, damaged and broken pipes (quick science lesson in case you forgot: when water freezes, its’ molecules expand. This is why frozen pipes usually crack or burst). Not only will you not notice any damage to your irrigation system until spring, but it can be very costly and difficult to repair broken or damaged pipes.

 261.
Best Time to Winterize Your Sprinkler System.

 262.
Since draining or blowing out your sprinkler is so important, it is crucial to get it done before the first hard soil penetrating freeze. A hard freeze, as a term, is a little ambiguous since every plant reacts differently to the cold. A freeze, in a weather report, is anything 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below. A hard freeze usually requires it to be a little bit colder and for an extended period of time. Since pipes are buried in the ground, the soil does act as an insulator. No need to worry about your pipes if the air temperatures dip to 32 degrees for the first time of the year and your system still isn’t drained. This, however, would be a good time to drain your irrigation system as it will only continue to get colder, and the chance of damage increases with each temperature drop below 32 degrees. So a good rule of thumb is when you see 32 degrees for the first time in the forecast, drain your sprinkler system as soon as possible.

 263.
How you can drain your sprinkler system.

 264.
There are 3 main ways to drain a sprinkler system depending on the types of valves and system you have. If you have automatic valves, turning off the water supply to the system and turning on one sprinkler head to let the water out is all you usually need to do. For manual valves, all you need to do is shut off the water, and open the valve. Then there is the ‘blow-out’ method. This is when you force compressed air into the piping, forcing the water out of the sprinkler heads (as seen here); this method can cause damage if not done right so make sure you know what you are doing before you attempt the blowout method. For more detailed information on how to drain your sprinkler systems, check out this blog here.

 265.
If you have never drained your sprinkler system before, or want a professional to show you the best technique for your specific system, contact us today. 281.

Snowy days are just around the corner, and that means it’s about time to break out the shovel. Shoveling snow can be a big hassle and cause some immense pain in the process. Thousands of people report getting hurt from shoveling snow in the winter months, but that doesn’t have to be you.

 282.
6 Tips For Snow Shovel Safety

 283.
Safely take care of your driveway and sidewalks this winter by changing up your shoveling routine. Follow these helpful tips from Voss Landscape the next time you start shoveling snow.

 284.
Pick The Right Shovel

 285.
Consider all of these characteristics when picking out your shovel:

 286.

 287.
Made of sturdy materials

 288.
Lightweight and easy to maneuver

 289.
Small plastic blade at the end

 290.
An appropriate length: the blade should be able to touch the ground with only a slight bend in your knees, and the handle should reach your chest when standing upright

 291.

 292.
Have Good Technique

 293.
It is very important to push the snow when shoveling rather than lifting it. If you need to lift some snow from an area, a correct stance is key. Squat with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Prevent injury by using your legs to lift instead of your back. Avoid throwing snow over your shoulder to resist back and shoulder strain. Also, remember to turn your entire body when turning rather than twisting at the waist.

 294.
Do a Warm Up

 295.
Snow shoveling can be a big workout, so it is a good idea to do a small warmup before hitting the pavement. Simply marching in place and stretching before can make for a healthy experience.

 296.
Avoid Falls

 297.
Wear shoes or boots that have slip-resistant soles to keep you steady as you shovel. Have a clear view of ice patches and uneven surfaces by not letting your scarf or hat block your vision. Removing snow before it is walked or driven on prevents that slippery, hard-packed ice layer from forming, so start shoveling early.

 298.
Take Some Breaks

 299.
Remember to pace yourself, and take breaks as needed. Snow shoveling is a strenuous activity in the freezing cold, so giving yourself a breather every now and then is crucial. If you dress in multiple layers, you can remove or add clothes during breaks for optimal warmth.

 300.
Call Voss

 301.
You may want to consider hiring someone else rather than doing the shoveling yourself. Many people who are experiencing medical conditions or don’t exercise on the daily should definitely consult their doctor before taking on the task of shoveling snow. Others who don’t have the right equipment or enough time should give Voss Landscape a call. We provide fast snow removal services for both residential and commercial areas at an affordable cost.

 318.
One of the ideal times of year to remove dead or diseased trees and stumps is before winter. Doing so may help prevent problems like property damage during storms. Also, once the leaves fall and trees stop growing, you can see the potential issues that might occur if you were to delay removal.

 319.
If you have stumps or trees that you need to remove, you might be thinking about taking a DIY approach. But before you do, it’s wise to become familiar with the top do’s and don’ts of tree and stump removal.

 320.
Keep in mind that it’s easier, safer, and more efficient to hire a team of professionals and arborists familiar with Columbia tree care. They’ll have the tools and expertise to remove trees and stumps, and will be able to protect your home or business from damage.

 321.
The Do’s of Tree and Stump Removal

 322.
1. Wear the Proper Safety Equipment and Clothing

 323.
Wearing close-fitting clothes and safety gear is crucial when removing a tree or stump. It’s best to put on chainsaw chaps, a long-sleeved shirt, durable gloves, and a pair of steel-toed boots. To keep yourself safe — including your head, face, ears, and eyes — wear goggles and an adjustable helmet with built-in ear protection and a face shield.

 324.
2. Take Your Time With the Removal

 325.
Removing a tree or stump takes time, and you don’t want to do it without preparing. Plan the steps you’ll take from start to finish, keeping in mind that you’ll need to avoid hitting utility lines.

 326.
3. Make Sure Enough Space Exists

 327.
Clear the area near the tree or stump to help prevent property damage and to avoid hurting people or pets. Whether you’re using a chainsaw or stump grinder, create plenty of space for limbs or an entire tree to fall to the ground, and for burning or shredding a stump.

 328.
4. Learn How to Properly Handle the Necessary Power Tools

 329.
Knowing how to use your equipment correctly and safely is critical. Read instruction manuals, watch tutorial videos, and ask experts for advice. Learn skills like how to grip a chainsaw or stump grinder so you won’t lose control during use. Make sure your tools are sharp and in good working condition. Then, practice using your equipment before you start the removal process.

 330.
5. Trim Trees in Shorter Pieces and Sections

 331.
Carefully assess the tree to plan how you can take it down in sections, as this may make the process safer and easier. You might need to prune or remove large branches so you can reduce the tree’s weight or access the trunk more easily.

 334.
The Don’ts of Tree and Stump Removal

 335.
1. Don’t Work Alone

 336.
Tree removal can be dangerous, especially if you’re a beginner. For example, you might be injured by sharp equipment, fall from an unsteady ladder, or get electrocuted if you accidentally hit a power line. Who will call for help if you’re by yourself? Rather than working alone, ask local arborists for guidance.

 337.
2. Don’t Neglect Chainsaw Best Practices

 338.
There are several things to keep in mind when using a chainsaw. For instance, check and re-check the chain tension to be sure it isn’t loose before and during use. After you’ve felled a tree, you should also avoid hitting the ground with your chainsaw or pinching the blade as you work on cutting the trunk and limbs into pieces.

 339.
3. Don’t Try To Climb the Tree Yourself

 340.
Climbing a tree isn’t as easy as it might look. You run the risk of hurting yourself if you don’t have the proper training, tools, and experience. Therefore, it’s wise to leave this to the experts who know how to prevent accidents and properly scale trees.

 341.
4. Don’t Leave a Stump After Felling a Tree

 342.
After removing a tree, it’s important to get rid of the stump too. You can use a stump grinder or a stump removal product that you pour into the wood. If you don’t complete this step, the stump might attract pests, grow suckers, or develop fungus.

 343.
5. Don’t Allow Children or Pets To Be in the Area

 344.
Keeping kids and pets out of the area during tree and stump removal is the smartest way to keep them safe. Also, if using a chemical product to remove a stump, bear in mind that it can be toxic, so continue keeping loved ones and animals away by covering it and creating a barrier while it’s being treated.

 345.
Tree and Stump Removal Is Quicker and Easier With Professional Guidance

 346.
Removing a tree or stump requires a lot of time and effort. Hiring experts can simplify things and ensure the job will be done right.
