114.
115.
116.
117.
Since last January, Havana House has held "Vice Passport Pairings," which features a cigar and brewery. Friday night's feature was Birdfish Brewing Company.

118.
119.
120.
121.
The cigar is called "Underrated," the creation of NBA Champion Ron Harper and Luciano Cigars. It launched three months ago but at first Harper didn't attach his name to it -- but on Friday, he and the man who helped him make it showed their faces.

122.
123.
124.
125.
"We wanted people to fall in love with the cigar, that's what [Harper] wanted, and we decided to follow that marketing strategy, it went pretty well," said Luciano Meirelles, co-founder of Luciano Cigars.

126.
127.
128.
129.
The name "Underrated" is tied to Harper's rise to the NBA.

130.
131.
132.
133.
"We didn't want a celebrity cigar, we wanted a good cigar," Harper said. "Now the word is out, it's selling good and we're just having a good time going to events."

134.
135.
136.
137.
Also there: Matt Skeen played music, and Boards by Angelica, a local charcuterie board business, was featured.

138.
139.
140.
141.
For the owner, it's all about promoting and working with small businesses.

142.
143.
144.
145.
"My kind of ethos is to bring small business together for the community and bring the community together for small business. I think that's very important, so I like to collaborate with and team up with local artists, local breweries, local wineries," said Tony Bellato, owner of Havana House in Niles.

146.
147.
148.
149.
Art by Hector Gonzalez was also for sale.

414.
POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) - Michelle Elia, one of Ohio's foremost experts on the Science of Reading, and Maria Pappas who helped implement the Science of Reading in the Youngstown City Schools, recently met to discuss the method.

415.
416.
417.
418.
They agree with Governor DeWine's assessment that the Science of Reading, sounding words out, is the best way to teach children to read. DeWine presented the method at a literacy roundtable at Youngstown State University last week.

419.
420.
421.
422.
"He is spot on about the science of reading. I can tell you that," said Pappas.

423.
424.
425.
426.
"And thank goodness our governor has been so fantastic in saying this needs to change, but I know number one, that the change needs to start in higher education, it needs to change in schools, and they need money to do it," Elia said.

427.
428.
429.
430.
Elia explained how in the 1990s, schools started using the balanced literacy approach to reading which is a meaning-based approach that de-emphasizes the teaching of sound-letter relationships, or phonics.

431.
432.
433.
434.
"We switched to what was supposed to be joyful and wonderful and create this love of literacy and we forgot to teach kids how to read," Elia said.

435.
436.
437.
438.
"In the Science of Reading that word recognition piece is an ongoing part in instruction," said Pappas.

439.
440.
441.
442.
There's an equation for the Science of Reading: WR times LC equals RC--or word recognition (how letters and combinations of letters sound) times language comprehension (vocabulary, sentence structure, and background knowledge) equals reading comprehension.

443.
444.
445.
446.
"It's a simple combination. You need word recognition as well as the language comp which is vocabulary and background knowledge," said Pappas.

447.
448.
449.
450.
"This neurological pathway from letters to sounds doesn't exist from birth. If you don't teach it, as a teacher, it doesn't happen," said Elia.

451.
452.
453.
454.
The method is taught by using specific books.

455.
456.
457.
458.
"There is no such thing as a perfect curriculum. Let me be really clear here. It doesn't exist. But, we now have in Ohio a list of curricula, plural, that districts can choose from that are aligned with the Science of Reading," Elia said.

459.
460.
461.
462.
Elia also had something to say to teachers who hold onto methods other than the Science of Reading.

463.
464.
465.
466.
"We've got to let this go. If this was the medical profession, we'd be held to malpractice, right?" Elia said.

But what's behind all of that development? And how was the city able to turn things around?

482.
483.
484.
485.
Joe Hovorka has been around the block a time or two, but it all led him right back to the area.

486.
487.
488.
489.
"I grew up here. Graduated Salem High School in 1991. You get a sense of freedom, I think, as a kid. We wanted our kids to grow up and have that," Hovorka said.

490.
491.
492.
493.
When Joe returned to town eight years ago, downtown Salem wasn't the vibrant city center that it is now. It took a lot of work to get there.

494.
495.
496.
497.
"Downtown, particularly, had a high number of vacancies and a lot of buildings that were in disrepair," Hovorka said.

498.
499.
500.
501.
But since then, Salem has seen a surge of businesses open, and people like Hovorka have played a key role. What started as a side hustle has evolved into a full blown renaissance of downtown.

502.
503.
504.
505.
"I thought I'd own a building or two, but then as opportunities arose and we started to see the demand from tenants that wanted to be in downtown Salem with a quality renovated building, we just kept going," Hovorka said.

506.
507.
508.
509.
In the last two years, more than two dozen businesses have popped up, with more on the way.
The city has been taking advantage of historic tax credits, the latest to the tune of $1.7 million. It kickstarted a five building facelift of the Broadway Avenue corridor.

510.
511.
512.
513.
"We didn't know what demand was going to be like when we bought the first one, and to be honest, it got faster. The first couple it was a little bit slower. Four months, five months, six months until you find a tenant," Hovorka said, "Now, a lot of these buildings, we get calls before it's even renovated."

514.
515.
516.
517.
The OG is set to open in the coming months, and work is underway at two other locations in town.

518.
519.
520.
521.
Hovorka owns nine buildings in total downtown, but the wealth spreads far beyond him.

522.
523.
524.
525.
"It's not just us. There's others making investments, and that's what we wanted. We wanted a critical mass of people coming into downtown," Hovorka said.

541.
542.
543.
544.
Omega Door Company owner John Thompson raises some of his cattle on a 300-acre property tucked away in Champion, at Hidden Acres Cattle Company.

545.
546.
547.
548.
Thompson moved to the Mahoning Valley 25 years ago for his business but grew up on a cattle farm in Missouri.

549.
550.
551.
552.
"It's hard to take the farm out of the boy, so to speak," said Thompson.

553.
554.
555.
556.
He bought a few cows years later after purchasing some property, starting off with a few Scottish Highlands. Thompson added two Wagyu heifers and a bull to cross breed after tasting a Wagyu steak, gradually growing his herd during the pandemic.

557.
558.
559.
560.
"Quite frankly, I think it's a really good steak -- it has a great taste and it's not too fatty," Thompson said.

561.
562.
563.
564.
Thompson calls the cows his passion project which he, in turn, turned into a business.

565.
566.
567.
568.
"Just woke up one day and said, 'You know what? We have the land, we have the cows -- let's see if this works,'" Thompson said.

569.
570.
571.
572.
And so the Hidden Acres Cattle Company was born, selling beef from Thompson's cattle.

573.
574.
575.
576.
"It's a thousand pounds of meat apiece, so that's a lot of meat," Thompson said. "I have two that are waiting to be butchered, and five in the next year to butcher ... So that's where we are now. We have enough to butcher and enough in the pipeline."

577.
578.
579.
580.
All of which is pasture-raised right here in Trumbull County, without hormones or antibiotics.

581.
582.
583.
584.
"It's as natural as you can get," Thompson said. "We don't artificially insemenate -- we have a bull that does that for free."

585.
586.
587.
588.
Local customers can place beef orders online and pick it up at the Hidden Oaks Golf Course in Vienna.

607.
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) - A house was destroyed by fire Friday in Austintown.

608.
609.
610.
611.
Firefighters were called to a home on the 2200 block of Sprucewood Drive around 2:30 p.m.

612.
613.
614.
615.
Austintown Assistant Chief Dave Shertzer was one of the first on the scene.

616.
617.
618.
619.
Shertzer said the fire started in the garage and spread to the rest of the home. Fire also damaged the house next door on one side.

620.
621.
622.
623.
"So the garage, the roof was already totally caved in and the flames were shooting out through there. It was already spread a pretty decent amount into the actual structure, the residence of the house," said Schertzer.

624.
625.
626.
627.
It was a neighbor who alerted the residents that they needed to get out when he saw the flames coming out of the house and came running down the street.

628.
629.
630.
631.
Firefighters are still investigating the cause, but they know where it started. The fire was so hot that the side of the neighboring house also caught fire.

632.
633.
634.
635.
No one in either house was hurt, although when firefighters arrived they initially had water problems.

636.
637.
638.
639.
A construction crew boarded up the windows of both houses.

655.
656.
657.
658.
Representative Lauren McNally, of Youngstown, introduced a bill this week that would ban privately-held utilities, such as First Energy, from using money from customers to pay for political activities such as lobbying or making campaign contributions.

659.
660.
661.
662.
The measure comes in the wake of convictions against several state officials who pushed for the bailout of First Energy after they received political contributions.

663.
664.
665.
666.
"What is the Ohio legislature going to do to right the wrong that happened? The wrong that has been deemed the largest scandal to ever happen in the state of Ohio and on that has caused other states to look at their own laws," McNally said.

667.
668.
669.
670.
The measure would also require utility companies to disclose their political expenditures -- and face heavy fines if they use ratepayer funds for political purposes...

686.
687.
688.
689.
The group is a local nonprofit organization that provides hands-on experiences building leadership capabilities. One of the ways they do that is through community service, picking a charity and organizing a fundraiser for the organization.

690.
691.
692.
693.
Over the last two years, suicide rates have been a total of 20 suicides in the county. The money raised from the gold outing goes toward programs to help prevent those deaths.

694.
695.
696.
697.
"I feel like everyone is affected by suicide. They know someone -- a family member, a friend -- who's affected. You always hear from the effects of COVID that suicide rates have gone up," said Brad Smith, board member with Leadership Columbiana County. "We just want to put some emphasis and attention toward it and support it as much as we can."

698.
699.
700.
701.
The event raised more than $7,000 for the Columbiana County Suicide Prevention Coalition.

910.
911.
912.
913.
Two of the Mahoning Valley's preeminent news photographers, they have taken pictures of everything from presidential visits to multiple homicides and everything in between.

914.
915.
916.
917.
Working as competitors April 26, 1984, the two also shot one of Youngstown's watershed moments -- the fire that was the death knell of Idora Park.

918.
919.
920.
921.
At the time, Yosay was with The Vindicator -- where he would remain until the paper shut down in August 2019. Lewis was with the Tribune Chronicle in Warren but moved to The Vindicator a year later. He also stayed at the paper until it shut down. Both are now retired but they are still active with their cameras.

922.
923.
924.
925.
Yosay right away said the fire was "probably the biggest fire I ever covered."

926.
927.
928.
929.
Lewis said he wasn't sure if it was the biggest one he ever covered but he saw the smoke all the way from Warren. He drove to the scene on the South Side with a reporter.

930.
931.
932.
933.
"There were fire trucks all over the place and a pretty huge crowd of onlookers," Lewis said.

934.
935.
936.
937.
Patti Fife Schaeffer, another Vindicator photographer, got the assignment to shoot the fire from the air. She drove out to the airport in Vienna, where she hopped on a plane flown by a pilot who flew helicopters in Vietnam.

938.
939.
940.
941.
Even from the air, she said, "I remember feeling very sad."

942.
943.
944.
945.
The fire was started by a welder's torch from workers doing some work on the Lost River ride. Firefighters were hampered by wind, low water pressure and the easily flammable wood that the majority of the buildings at the park were constructed of.

946.
947.
948.
949.
The next day's Vindicator said it was only a herculean effort by Ladder 22 that saved the famed Carousel -- which Yosay confirmed.

950.
951.
952.
953.
Fire Chief Gerald Kernan at the time had over 30 firefighters at the park but it wasn't enough -- several firefighters who were off duty came to help, according to the paper, until there were 59 at the scene.

954.
955.
956.
957.
While their efforts were heroic -- they managed to save the Carousel and no one was injured -- the fire still took a heavy toll. It destroyed the famed Wild Cat roller coaster, known throughout the land, which had been in service since 1929.

958.
959.
960.
961.
The park's office buildings also caught fire and several important papers and other mementoes were lost. One office worker, Dave Shippoli, told the paper he had to shimmy through a hole in the building to escape the flames.

962.
963.
964.
965.
"I tried to put it out as best I could," he said, before he had to give up and escape.

966.
967.
968.
969.
Lewis said he had no idea the fire was going on. He was in the 240 Franklin St. SE newsroom at the Tribune in Warren when he got a call from the Associated Press asking if they could use his photos of the fire.

970.
971.
972.
973.
He went outside to look and could see the smoke coming from the South Side, so that is when he and a reporter left to cover the fire.

974.
975.
976.
977.
The park had already been suffering financial hardships, as just about everything in Youngstown at the time did, because of the massive layoffs in the steel industry that began in 1977. It had been put up for sale in 1982.

978.
979.
980.
981.
Some would think the fire would have put the park out of business for the 1984 season. But Patrick Duffy Jr., President of Idora Amusement Co., said he wanted to open on schedule.

982.
983.
984.
985.
"We'll give it one hell of a shot," he told The Vindicator amid the rubble of the park.

986.
987.
988.
989.
WHOT was still going ahead with their annual Spring Thing concert for the park's opening, which was set for May 5, 1984.

990.
991.
992.
993.
But there was an unofficial opening, of sorts, because of the fire -- Lewis and Yosay both said one of their core memories of the fire is the large crowd that gathered, with lots of those people in tears.

994.
995.
996.
997.
As he was shooting pictures, Lewis said he was mindful of the park and what it represented to the Valley and himself. He went to a lot of company picnics for his father's job as a kid and he had fond memories of the park.

998.
999.
1000.
1001.
"It was emotional for me," he said. "I went there a lot as a kid."

1002.
1003.
1004.
1005.
Lewis said he did not believe the park would ever reopen after the fire.

1006.
1007.
1008.
1009.
"I kind of thought 'I don't know how it's going to come back from that,'" Lewis said.

1010.
1011.
1012.
1013.
"There were so many people standing around crying," Yosay said. "You knew if they didn't get it [the fire] stopped, it would've took the whole park."

1014.
1015.
1016.
1017.
Fife Schaeffer, who retired after spending time with The Vindicator and The Morning Journal but still shoots sports part-time, said by the time she got to the park in the plane, most of the fire was out and firefighters were tending to hot spots. She said one thing from being in the air is she couldn't experience "the immenseness" of the fire, because everything looked so small from up above.

1018.
1019.
1020.
1021.
"You never really feel from the air how immense that fire was," she said.

1022.
1023.
1024.
1025.
The majority of the damage at the park was on the midway between the ballroom and the carousel. Low water pressure stymied efforts by fire crews to get the flames under control initially and as the fire grew, so did the heat it generated.

1026.
1027.
1028.
1029.
Lewis said he remembers taking a picture of a bubble top siren on one of the fire trucks that melted from the heat. Yosay said paint was blistering off of some of the trucks that were parked close to the flames.

1030.
1031.
1032.
1033.
When he leaned against a fire truck, he said, "it was hot to the touch," and the windshield was cracked and buckled from the heat, Lewis said.

1034.
1035.
1036.
1037.
But Yosay said it was one of the trucks -- Ladder 22 -- that kept the fire from getting worse. Because of the way it was parked, he said, it kept the wind from fanning the flames near the carousel. And the firefighters in the bucket of the ladder managed to get a decent stream of water and poured thousands of gallons on it, soaking it so it wouldn't catch fire.

1038.
1039.
1040.
1041.
Later, Assistant Fire Chief William Zigarevich told The Vindicator, "Without that truck [Ladder 22], we would've lost that million-dollar building."

1042.
1043.
1044.
1045.
Yosay praised the firefighers' effforts.

1046.
1047.
1048.
1049.
"The firefighters worked very hard," Yosay said.

1050.
1051.
1052.
1053.
Officials at the time estimated the damage at $2.5 million.

1054.
1055.
1056.
1057.
The park did manage to open on time. But that season was its last. Labor Day was the last time the rides and park were open to the public. A few days later, a private picnic was held for employees of St. Elizabeth Hospital. An auction in October of that year took place as the remaining rides and equipment were sold off.

1058.
1059.
1060.
1061.
A city church bought the property and had plans for a "City of God" attraction. But those plans never panned out. The famed ballroom was still there but it burned to the ground in 2001. The remains of The Wildcat as well as The Jack Rabbit were also demolished. The carousel was bought at the auction and was open to the public in 2011 at a park in Brooklyn, New York.

1062.
1063.
1064.
1065.
Memories of the park and the fire linger for those who were there. Lewis said he carried the reminder with his cameras.

1066.
1067.
1068.
1069.
Typically, when he covered a fire he would smell like smoke for the rest of the day. But his cameras after the Idora fire?

1070.
1071.
1072.
1073.
"My cameras smelled like smoke for a week after that," he said.

1074.
1075.
1076.
1077.
Fife Schaeffer said even though she was in the air, she still got the "rush" of being assigned to shoot a big story.

1078.
1079.
1080.
1081.
"Your adrenaline is going big time," she said.

1082.
1083.
1084.
1085.
Yosay said as a professional, the experience was one he would never forget; he was able to produce quality work in a harsh environment, a challenge that most journalists, no matter the story, want to be there for. It's why they do what they do.

1086.
1087.
1088.
1089.
"It's hard covering something like that, but it's your job," he said.

1090.
1091.
1092.
1093.
Lewis said just about the same thing.

1094.
1095.
1096.
1097.
"It's what we did," he said.

1098.
1099.
1100.
1101.
