With the completion of the Coruscant & Krittika Releases in late 2021, the Raiden Network project scope was fully implemented and became the fastest and most inexpensive ERC20 transfer solution available. And now, the Raiden Network is proud to announce the relaunch of Raiden Trust Grants, which support individuals and projects building on Raiden, discovering new use cases, and increasing adoption.

Raiden Trust

The Raiden Trust is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to fostering and strengthening the Raiden ecosystem. It provides support, guidance, and network connections to projects and individuals working on Raiden applications or infrastructure. The main focus of the Raiden Trust is to support projects that demonstrate use cases for the Raiden protocol and help grow the Raiden Network.

The Raiden Trust is governed by a trust deed outlining its scope of operation and the regulations it must abide by.

Raiden Trust Grants

The Raiden Trust currently holds RDN 16 million, which may be spent in the form of Raiden Trust Grants. The Raiden community can discuss and vote on grant proposals. If a grant proposal is approved by the community and meets the Raiden Trust governing documents, it will be funded by the Raiden Trust.

Applications are reviewed, and grants are awarded on a rolling basis. Grants are awarded in USD equivalent and disbursed in RDN tokens. An individual or company may apply for a second (or third) grant upon the successful completion of earlier grants.

Raiden Trust Grants are a fantastic opportunity for individuals and companies to get involved in the Raiden Community, build the Raiden Network, and shape the future of decentralized payments.

Eligible Projects

Raiden Trust Grant can support a wide range of projects, including:

Community Growth: Projects that focus on growing and strengthening the Raiden community. This could include initiatives aimed at attracting new members, building community spirit, or supporting existing members.

Tech Development: Projects that focus on developing new technologies or improving existing ones. This could include projects that build key infrastructure components (see the example of the Raiden Rust Client below) or improve the performance and security of the Raiden Network.

Building dApps: Projects that focus on using the Raiden Network to build new decentralized end-used applications or services. This could include projects that use the Raiden Network to provide decentralized peer-to-peer payments, exchanges and other DeFi dApps, trade associations, local reputation systems, or other services.

Marketing Growth: Individuals or groups that focus on promoting the Raiden Network and increasing awareness of Raiden. This could include projects aimed at improving the network’s brand, creating marketing materials, or running advertising campaigns.

Current Grants

The Raiden Trust has already awarded one grant to a developer building the Raiden Rust Client, which will operate parallel to the existing Raiden Python Client. This project aims to introduce even greater scaling and efficiency to the Raiden Network, unlocking additional use cases. Upon completion, the code for the Raiden Rust Client will be published open source under an MIT license, allowing anyone to fork it and/or continue building on it.

Apply For A Grant

To apply for a Raiden Trust Grant, follow the simple steps below. The entire process will take 4–6 weeks from submission to disbursement. And the Raiden Network team will be on call to help you at every step of the way.

Submit your grant proposal here at any time.

The Raiden Trust team will review your proposal to ensure it aligns with our guidelines, trust deed, and applicable regulations.

If your grant proposal aligns with those criteria, the Raiden team will post it as a topic on the Raiden Forum in the ‘Grants’ category. (We will not publish your name and contact information.) The Raiden Community can discuss, ask questions, and propose changes. You can engage in these discussions and accept/reject proposed changes.

If the Raiden Community supports your proposal, an RDN token holder will create a Snapshot vote to formally approve your grant proposal. See the Raiden Community Vote Rules.

If the RDN token holders vote to approve your grant proposal, the Raiden Trust team will contact you for a KYC/AML check.

If the KYC/AML check is successful, the Raiden Grant trustees will formally approve your proposal and disburse the grant.

Submit your grant proposal here today!

Disclaimer

Please note that even though we do our best to ensure the quality and accuracy of the information provided, this publication may contain views and opinions, errors and omissions for which the content creator(s) and any represented organization cannot be held liable.

The wording and concepts regarding financial terminology (e.g. “payments”, “checks”, “currency”, “transfer” [of value]) are exclusively used in an exemplary way to describe technological principles and do not necessarily conform to the real world or legal equivalents of these terms and concepts.

Relaunching Raiden Trust Grants was originally published in Raiden Network Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

The Raiden team has worked hard to ensure that the community is the driving force of the project. We hope the community will take up this call and lead in identifying new use cases and opportunities for adoption.

In this post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the key developments that took place in Q4 2022, including the Raiden Community Manifesto, the implementation of a proposal process on the Raiden Network Forum, the integration of Shutter Shielded Voting on Snapshot, and the growth of the Raiden community on Discord.

Community Manifesto

In October of 2022, the Raiden community released a Community Manifesto that outlines our shared vision for moving forward in community governance. The manifesto lays out a clear set of principles for the community to follow: transparency, inclusiveness, and a focus on long-term success.

It also establishes decision-making guidelines and outlines various community members' roles and responsibilities. The manifesto sets the stage for a new era of community governance in Raiden, where all members can actively participate and contribute to the project’s success. With this manifesto in place, the Raiden community is poised to continue growing and thriving for years to come.

Forum Participation

Forum participation is a vital aspect of community engagement. And in Q4 2022, the Raiden Forum saw an increase in activity.

Community members created at least four proposals. These posts earned high levels of engagement, showcasing the community’s eagerness to participate in decision-making. The proposal with the highest level of engagement was titled “RDN Exchange Listing” by user ‘BusinessLion’, and it attracted over 500 views and 13 replies.

Additionally, October 2022 saw the highest number of views on the forum, with approximately 3,000 logged-in and anonymous users.

Raiden Network on Snapshot

A proposal process on the Raiden Network Forum in Q4 2022 was implemented to enable community engagement in governance. This move aimed to encourage community members to voice their opinions and provide feedback on proposals.

Voting on Snapshot

The Raiden team also launched Community Voting on Snapshot, complete with parameters for community voting by RDN token holders and the integration of Shutter Shielded Voting to ensure integrity in the process.

Discord Infrastructure

To continue the growth of the Raiden community on Discord, the Raiden team made changes to the infrastructure in terms of the onboarding process, channels, and categories of the Raiden Discord. We carried out this move to encourage more activity within the community discord and allow the flow of information and updates to flow through to community members with little to no barriers. We are planning exciting initiatives to foster growth within the community in the upcoming year of 2023.

Wrapping Up 2022

As we look forward to 2023, it’s clear that the Raiden Network is in a solid position to continue growing and evolving. The team’s commitment to community engagement and governance is evident in the developments of Q4 2022. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Raiden. We hope that this Raiden Pulse has provided you with a better understanding of the key developments that took place in Q4 and that you’re as excited as we are to see what comes next. Keep an eye out for exciting initiatives planned for the upcoming year, and stay tuned for more updates from the Raiden team.

Community beyond Discord

You can also join us on Twitter and Medium to follow us closely.

If you are not familiar with Raiden yet, visit our website!

Join The Raiden Forum

By voicing your views, perspectives, and ideas on the Raiden Forum you directly contribute to shaping Raiden. Proposals that show considerate traction are more likely to be submitted to community voting and subsequently to also be executed on.

https://forum.raiden.network/

Raiden Pulse #23: Updates From Q4 2022 was originally published in Raiden Network Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Become the first Raiden community member to initiate a vote!

Just over a month ago, we launched Raiden’s Community Governance. Since then, we have seen the growth of community-led discussions on the Raiden Forum. Today, we are thrilled to announce the next step forward — the launch of Raiden Community Voting on Snapshot! We are ready for the first proposal and round of voting.

Community Governance Recap

If you missed out on the detailed process on how proposals are created and moved onto Snapshot for community voting, we encourage you to have a read on the Raiden Community Governance post. Our approach includes three key principles:

Everyone may create informal proposals and discuss.

RDN token holders may create formal proposals and vote.

Raiden Trust will execute votes regarding the external development fund to the extent possible according to its trust deed and applicable regulations. Other stakeholders will use votes as guidance, but will not be bound by them.

Proposal

To implement the second key principle, we drafted a proposal and collected feedback via the Raiden Community Voting on Snapshot discussion on the Raiden Forum.

Feedback

The Raiden Community was very supportive of the proposal.

We discussed a number of important topics, especially the Vote Initiation Threshold Amount. Based on feedback, we decided to lower the threshold. Over 300 RDN token holders now have the ability to initiate votes. And others can purchase the required number of RDN tokens to initiate a vote for just USD $280 (at current prices). We believe this is the sweet spot — low enough for everyone to participate, but high enough to prevent spam votes.

Consensus

After making revisions based on community feedback, we set up Raiden Community Voting on Snapshot with the following parameters:

Vote Initiation Threshold: RDN 10,000

Vote Participation: All RDN Token Holders (except Raiden Trust and brainbot labs).

Vote Timelines: Voting Delay of 4 Days & Voting Period of 10 Days

Vote System: Weighted Voting

Vote Quorum: RDN 2,000,000 Votes

And Community Voting is LIVE!

Community voting is now live! And that Raiden still offers one of the very best trustless foundations for payment products with massive scale. We are dedicated to discovering the use cases in which these characteristics are crucial, thus creating new opportunities for the Raiden Network to thrive.

We value individual empowerment and decentralized power structures.

We build Raiden to help people to self-organize effectively. We seek to free people from reliance on top-down power structures and their negative side effects.

We strive to avoid single points of failure and centralized control.

If a centralized component is necessary, we use smart contracts controlled by community governance.

We build together.

We know that our vision and values cannot be manifested by one person, one team or one organization. Raiden is a community, a collective effort. We each strive to employ our unique talents to make valuable contributions. We encourage other community members to do so as well.

We are welcoming and we are diverse.

We are more than permissionless. We are welcoming. We encourage anyone and everyone to contribute to Raiden. We become stronger and more resilient by welcoming diversity of views, knowledge, skills, and experience.

We are led by builders, creators and positive change-makers.

We know that someone who has no will to create and change has no right to criticize. We, therefore, give the greatest weight and credence to the ideas and proposals of builders.

We embrace innovation and challenge.

We are proud of our history of pioneering work. We always seek to remain on the cutting edge of innovation. We challenge ourselves and others to live in the future and build what is missing. We are not afraid to fail.

We envision a long future.

We are often well ahead of the curve. As a result, our work may not be ready for mass adoption just yet. We focus on the long-term sustainability of the Raiden project.

We are responsible stewards.

We are all responsible for the Raiden Trust and advising it on the most effective use of the external development fund. The goal of the Raiden Trust is to fund and support projects and parties that help build and grow the Raiden Network ecosystem, e.g. developers of alternative client implementations, helper service providers or other external projects that provide complementary or foundational components or applications that help bootstrap the Raiden Network ecosystem. (Read the full Raiden Trust deed and announcement.)

We create value — we don’t extract value or speculate.

We focus our attention and energy on building technological infrastructure which we and others find valuable and useful. We know that creating value for others results in benefits for the entire community.

We live our values of transparency and decentralization.

We build open-source software. We build a ground-up community.

We align with Ethereum community values.

We are here because we desire fairness and equality. We strive to foster ways of interacting that do not inflict violence, oppress, exploit, or extract. We believe in the power of purpose-driven communities.

We write this manifesto as a living document.

We have sought to capture our vision and values in this document. We constantly revise it as a continuous work in progress. We will adapt it as necessary to fit our changing and growing community. We seek to live this vision and value in what we build and how we work together.

Join the Raiden Forum

By voicing your views, perspectives and ideas on the Raiden Forum you directly contribute to shaping Raiden. Everyone in the Raiden community is welcome to make proposals and engage in thoughtful discussions.

Raiden Forum

Two weeks ago, we introduced a path to robust Raiden Community Governance, including new processes and tools to help the community discuss and vote on important topics.

This path to Raiden Community Governance focuses on three key principles:

1. Everyone may create informal proposals and discuss.

2. RDN token holders may create formal proposals and vote.

3. Raiden Trust will execute votes regarding the external development fund to the extent possible according to its trust deed and applicable regulations. Other stakeholders will use votes as guidance, but will not be bound by them.

As our first concrete step along this path, we are excited to announce the Raiden Forum is now live!

The Raiden forum builds on the existing Raiden Discord server, creating a new place where everyone can share proposals and engage in positive and thoughtful long-form discussions. If a proposal receives significant support in the Raiden Forum, the proposal will then be sent to a RDN token holder vote on Snapshot.

Categories

The Raiden Forum currently has five categories of topics:

Protocol & Applications: Discussions about the Raiden technical infrastructure and specific use cases which are (or can be) built on top of it.

Grants: Discussions about Raiden Trust Grants proposals.

Proposals: Discussions about all other proposals.

Feedback: Discussion about the Raiden Forum, its organization, how it works, and how we can improve it.

Uncategorized: Discussions about other appropriate topics.

As the Raiden Forum grows, we will create additional categories. If you have an idea for another, please let us know.

Please note that the Radien Forum is not a place for discussions about general topics, RDN price/listing info, or support requests. (Head over to the Raiden Discord server for those discussions!)

Topics

To kickstart the discussions, we have created 2 topics — both in the “Uncategorized” category. Please read them, comment, and encourage other Raiden community members to join these discussions.

Community Manifesto: A summary of Raiden’s guiding vision and values, which will serve as a guide to the community as we move forward.

Community Voting: The configurations for the RDN token holder voting platform on Snapshot, including the vote initiation threshold, vote participants, vote timeline, vote system, and vote quorum.

We also encourage you to create new topics and lead discussions on issues which are interesting and meaningful to you and the rest of the Raiden community.

POAPs

In recognition of the earliest contributors to Raiden Forum, we’ll be issuing limited edition POAPs for the first 10 community members to create new topics and the first 100 users to comment on existing topics. Collect both POAPs today!

Join the Discussion

We invite everyone to join the discussion.

If you are new to community forums on Discourse, we highly recommend their fun and quirky chatbot onboarding program. You’ll get a great introduction to Discourse. You’ll also earn badges which give you access to additional features and more powerful community roles. It takes about 5–10 minutes.

If you are already familiar with Discourse, we encourage you to dive right in!

Announcing the Raiden Forum was originally published in Raiden Network Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Now we’re introducing a path to robust community governance. Learn more about the road ahead.

Raiden’s goal is to provide a scalable payment solution. We have successfully built it — and more. In late 2021, we announced the Coruscant & Krittika Releases, marking the complete implementation of the original Raiden Network project scope. And in May 2022, we announced Raiden on Arbitrum, lowering setup costs and making Raiden the fastest and most inexpensive decentralized ERC20 transfer solution.

As Raiden continues to seek use cases for implementation and product-market fit, we want to empower the Raiden community to join and lead this journey, and to make decisions on important topics — from Raiden Trust Grants, to code governance, to deployments on additional blockchains. In order to create a solid foundation for decentralized Raiden community governance, we will propose and make available new processes and tools for community proposals, discussion, voting, and execution.

The future of Raiden is in the hands of its community. Learn how you can shape its future.

Community Governance

We have and will be working with the Raiden community to brainstorm and create ways for the community to govern the protocol and its implementations, and to make decisions on important topics. We endeavor to take into consideration the interests and obligations of all Raiden stakeholders, and we have outlined an initial approach:

Discussion

Everyone may create informal proposals and discuss.

Communities thrive on lively conversation — the constant interplay of ideas, proposals, discussions and debates, compromises and revisions.

The Raiden Discord server is growing in members and activity. It’s a wonderful platform to share announcements, meet other community members, engage in light conversation, and ask questions. But community governance requires a dedicated forum for detailed proposals, structured discussions, and shows of community sentiment.

Discourse is the most commonly used forum platform. It is an open-source, purpose-built platform for long-form chat and discussions. Discourse encourages positive and constructive discussion through an automated trust system. This keeps the community engaged, allows super users to assist in governance, and protects the community from spammers, trolls and other bad actors.

Voting

RDN token holders may create formal proposals and vote.

“In order to ensure that Raiden community governance votes reflect the will of the community, the Raiden Trust and brainbot labs will not participate in voting.”

RDN token holders are the stakeholders with the clearest commitment to the Raiden Network’s future. We therefore believe that RDN token holders deserve the exclusive right to create and vote on formal proposals. This recognizes their support and financial stake, and it increases the probability of aligned interests.

In order to ensure that Raiden community governance votes reflect the will of the community, the Raiden Trust and brainbot labs will not participate in voting.

Snapshot is the most commonly used token-gated voting platform. It allows token holders to create proposals and vote off-chain (no gas needed). Snapshot offers configurable thresholds, a choice of voting systems (single choice, approval, quadratic, ranked choice, and weighted) along with shielded voting. It uses ERC20 tokens to calculate voting power and has a vote delegation service.

Execution

Raiden Trust will execute votes regarding the external development fund to the extent possible according to its trust deed and applicable regulations. Other stakeholders will use votes as guidance, but will not be bound by them.

Raiden Network is a community project supported by a wide range of stakeholders — including the Raiden Trust, brainbot labs, brainbot tech, and many other organizations and individuals.

The Raiden Trust is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to fostering and strengthening the Raiden ecosystem. It provides Raiden Trust Grants, guidance and network connections to projects and individuals working on Raiden applications or infrastructure. It has a particular focus on supporting projects that demonstrate use cases for the Raiden protocol and help grow the Raiden Network. The Raiden Trust will execute vote instructions which are within the scope of its trust deed and permitted by applicable regulations. As a result, Raiden community governance votes will have real power to determine the direction of the project.

Raiden community governance will be instrumental in guiding the decisions of other Raiden stakeholders. We cannot make commitments on their behalf and we are aware that these stakeholders have their own stakeholders, internal rules, and legal and regulatory obligations. We hope these stakeholders will use Raiden community governance votes as guidance and, in most cases, execute the vote instructions. If a stakeholder is unable to execute vote instructions due to applicable regulations, then the stakeholder should implement the vote outcome as far as possible and provide the community with an explanation.

Examples

The Raiden community can discuss, propose and vote on any topic. A couple examples to serve as inspiration:

Raiden Trust Grants

The Raiden Trust currently holds RDN 16 million, which may be spent in the form of Raiden Trust Grants. The Raiden community can discuss and vote on grant proposals. If a grant proposal is approved by the community and meets the Raiden Trust governing documents, it will be funded by the Raiden Trust.

Deployments

Raiden is currently deployed on both Ethereum L1 and Arbitrum, and there are many questions about whether and how Raiden should expand. For example:

- Should Raiden remain on Ethereum L1, or encourage all projects to move to Arbitrum?

- Should Raiden be deployed on other L1s — Avalanche, Celo, etc.?

- Should Raiden be deployed on other rollups — Optimism, Boba, etc.?

The Raiden community can discuss and RDN holders can decide on these and similar issues.

Co-Creation

“The outline in this article is a starting point — not a finalized plan. We encourage you to share your ideas, questions, suggestions, and critiques.”

The outline in this article is a starting point — not a finalized plan. We encourage you to share your ideas, questions, suggestions, and critiques. Together, we will create a shared vision and a roadmap for Raiden community governance. We are excited to see the community empowered to shape the future of the Raiden Network project.

To be a part of the process:

Raiden Community Governance was originally published in Raiden Network Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Using Raiden on Arbitrum has clear advantages, which we will cover in this Pulse edition. We’re providing direct assistance on Discord for anyone who wants to test Raiden on Arbitrum or Mainnet. We have also released educational content that guides you through the process of setting up nodes on Arbitrum.

Product updates. The WebUI is now available for the Light Client CLI. This update makes Raiden CLI nodes easier to use by providing an optional web interface for managing nodes running in the terminal.

Our community is flourishing. The transition to Discord is going well! We already see improvements in several areas! 👍🏻

Strategic Updates

Raiden on Arbitum: What Do I Need to Remember?

The most significant update already announced in Q1 was the deployment of the Raiden protocol on another L2. The purpose? Improving access to Raiden and safeguarding its existence in a rollup-centric Ethereum. The Rohini version of the Light Client marks the successful release of Raiden on Arbitrum in May 2022.

L3 or L222, we leave it up to you!

If you haven’t read about Raiden on Arbitrum yet, take a look at the announcement article or refer to the key takeaways below.

Set Up Costs Drop by 35%

Deploying on Arbitrum essentially means better accessibility by decreasing the onboarding costs. We managed to get the one-time setup cost down by roughly 35%. Once set up, Raiden allows for close to free off-chain P2P transfers as usual, which is relevant for high-frequency micro transfers.

Fit for a Niche Market

The table below showcases the advantages of using Raiden over existing rollups in a pure P2P ERC20 token transfer environment. We see that Raiden on a rollup is currently the most scalable solution for highly recurring micro transfers.

Beyond the cheaper onboarding costs, Raiden is also well fitted for emerging niche markets like the IoT and M2M industries. Raiden can shine in use cases of automated, recurring micropayment like paying for storage, infrastructure access, content access, in-stream tipping in gaming, pay-per-play, etc.

Accessibility of Raiden: An Effort Beyond Tech

Moving forward, we want to make Raiden more accessible from different perspectives: product, marketing, and direct technical support.

To facilitate the use of Raiden products, we created a much-requested video tutorial on setting up a Raiden node.

Additionally, we are working on the Raiden website revamp. It will reflect the new positioning of Raiden, provide the latest updates, and give a better overview of the various Raiden products.

We will keep providing educational material and direct support to our community on Discord.

Product Updates

Goodbye to Manual Service Bundle Configuration

In April, we did a maintenance release for the stable mainnet Krttika release (v2) with these key user-facing changes:

1. Default settings are added to the Raiden Service Bundle

From now on, your client will automatically pick up a compatible server without the need to manually specify the correct parameters. As a result, users can avoid the challenges and potential mistakes of manual RSB configuring.

2. Easier installation process

It is now possible to install the CLI directly with npm or yarn.

The Light Client CLI Now Has An Interface!

In June, the team released the WebUI for the Light Client, making it easier to manage and run your Raiden nodes.

Together, the more recent v2.3 mainnet release and v3.1.0 Arbitrum release give you access to the WebUI, previously only available for the Python Client. Use - -web-ui to bring up the WebUI on http://localhost:5001/ui.

Community Updates

As mentioned in the Q1 edition of our Pulse, we launched Discord as a ‘one-stop shop’ for the community in April. Since then, we’ve grown steadily with increased positive sentiment and community engagement.

How’s The Transition Been Going So Far?

A few numbers since the Discord launch in April:

Response time reduced by roughly 50% from Gitter to Discord

Average +30% month-to-month growth on the server

The positive brand sentiment has nearly doubled from 17,5% to 32% within the first month and remained stable since then

If you are looking for:

Answers to any of your questions

Direct technical support

Direct communication with the Raiden Tech and Marketing team

Relevant updates and news about the project’s development

Participating in the decision-making by expressing your views and opinions, voting, etc.

More educational, engaging content about Raiden products

Discord has proven to be an excellent way to bring more value to our community members. It is also very useful to get direct community feedback and input.

A big thanks to our community! We are happy to see the positive progression and are looking forward to even more positive engagement in the future.

A Community Beyond Discord! 🦸‍♂️

You can also join us on Twitter and Medium to follow us closely.

If you are not familiar with Raiden yet, visit our website!

See you soon and take care!

The Raiden Team

Raiden Pulse #21: Updates From Q2 2022 was originally published in Raiden Network Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

This time around, we are introducing a new format: Quarterly updates covering all sorts of news and progress across strategy, product, community and team.

First, we hope you are all alright in the face of the recent Luna meltdown. We hope that you all overcome this difficult setback safely. It’s a painful but valuable lesson to learn.

That being said, with this new quarterly Raiden Pulse edition, we officially resume the regular updates on the state and progress of Raiden.

TL;DR

Raiden Network — Snapshot of Q1 Updates

Focusing on Protocol access and viability by decreasing setup costs and increasing convenience for users in a rollup-centric future. Aiming at better and faster support for developers and projects.

Raiden on top of an L2. After releasing a stable and feature-complete version, Q1 2022 was fully dedicated to the deployment on an L2 solution. The result is better and viable access to the protocol, as well as new unique properties for the IoT and M2M industries.

Preparing for a migration to Discord: making it a Raiden-owned one-stop community space resulting in faster and better community support.

The team is growing. Welcoming Stacy as a full-time Community Manager and Bilel as a part-time Business Development Manager.

Strategic Updates

Focusing on Protocol Access and Viability

The protocol is now feature-complete as of the end of 2021. Moving forward, the Raiden team wants to make the protocol accessible and viable for other projects and developers to use. This includes:

1. Reducting setup costs

Regarding onboarding costs, using the Raiden protocol on Ethereum Mainnet still remains out of reach, especially for the use cases of microtransactions. In Q1, the Raiden team was fully dedicated to piling the Raiden protocol on another layer 2 scaling solution to bring the setup costs down to acceptable levels.

2. Securing Raiden in a rollup-centric future

A rollup-native version of Raiden makes the protocol more accessible in terms of setup costs and ensures a more comfortable access to Raiden for the respective Layer 2 users. It makes Raiden ready for a rollup-centric future.

3. Better support to developers and projects

We have now dedicated people to provide technical assistance to whoever is considering testing or implementing Raiden. We have set up an internal process to tackle incoming partnership requests directly on our Discord server.

Product Updates

Coruscant and Krittika Mainnet Releases

The Raiden protocol has reached a stable and performant state beginning 2022 with new Coruscant and Krittika releases on Ethereum mainnet. Those releases were the most performant and stable ones with over six new features and marked the feature-complete state of Raiden.

The Raiden Network on Another L2

The setup costs on Ethereum Mainnet were making Raiden fairly inaccessible to test and use. Therefore, since early 2022 there has been ongoing work to deploy the Raiden Network on Arbitrum. It successfully went live in Q2, marking the beginning of a new era for Raiden. It represented a significant milestone that made a lot of positive noise and made it into the week in Ethereum news. We will dive deeper into it in our next Pulse edition.

Raiden’s New Positioning in the IoT Space

The new attributes of Raiden on top of a rollup match future use cases of high frequency and automated micro transfers. One-time setup costs, then granting close to free off-chain P2P transfers. The higher the volume of micro transfers, the more profitable it is to use Raiden over other existing scaling solutions. We see an opportunity in the emerging IoT industry. Specifically for recurring machine-to-machine payments, where instant finality, fast transaction, and high throughput at the lowest price are vital. This is where Raiden as a scaling solution can shine.

Community Updates

Another big achievement that started in Q1 is the transition to a Raiden-owned Discord server that serves multiple purposes. We aim to create a one-stop community space to interact with the Raiden team directly. It is the official contact point between the Raiden Team and the community, allowing faster and better communication. We will share some first exciting insights in the upcoming Q2 updates.

Team Updates

All the exciting changes above could not have been possible without our Raiden newbies, who joined in Q1. We are very grateful to have them on board and are looking forward to seeing them flourish within the team.

Meet Stacy, our Raiden Community Manager

Stacy joined our marketing team. She is leading community management and support. Additionally, Stacy helps in content creation and runs community-focused projects. She represents the voice of Raideneers. A true multi-talent when it comes to life achievements. She studied philosophy, did comedy, ran her own business, and was a community superstar for blockchain projects over the past 5 years.

Fun fact: “I watched Lord of the Rings 53 times. Yes, I’ve kept count of it haha.”

Meet Bilel, our Business Development Manager

Bilel joined as a part-time Business Development Manager very recently. He is the go-to person for any partnership, integration or business collaboration requests. As a true partnership master and Blockchain Tech maximalist, he helps bring blockchain to companies and startups worldwide.

Fun fact: “I have never watched Lord of the Rings.”

That’s it for Q1! We see tremendous progress and are very excited about what’s in store for Raiden. Stay tuned for the upcoming Q2 updates!

Don’t miss out on updates — Join our community! 🦸‍♂️

Join us on Discord, Twitter and Medium!

Not familiar with Raiden yet? This encouraged the Raiden team to take a closer look at how Raiden can be used on the Arbitrum rollup to lower the setup costs and make Raiden both the fastest and most inexpensive decentralized ERC20 transfer solution.

Having a rollup-native version of Raiden does not only get rid of the high initial costs incurred when running Raiden on the Ethereum mainchain, but it also positions the Raiden Network as a complementary solution that coexists with rollups.

Layering our L2 solution on top of another L2 provides a promising opportunity to advance Raiden’s future and to make the network more viable. That’s why we decided to go with rollups to make this happen!

Lowering Setup Costs

The Raiden protocol is known for its cheap and blazing fast token transfers. However, the initial setup and opening of channels have become increasingly expensive due to the high gas prices.

Up until now, Raiden has only been available on the Ethereum mainnet where users would have to pay unreasonable onboarding costs. With the new deployment on Arbiturm One these costs are significantly lowered, making Raiden more accessible than ever before and a suitable alternative for any project looking to implement and build payment networks.

New Raiden Property with Rollups

We compared the costs between using the Raiden protocol on mainnet, on Arbitrum and just using a rollup.

Based on the gas prices at the time of writing, the table below shows a significant drop in fees and how Raiden gains the property of cheaper onboarding. This highlights the great advantage of using Raiden in a pure P2P ERC20 token transfer environment.

So far the market has not hooked on to the long-anticipated demand for P2P payments. Nevertheless, there are possible future niche use cases such as recurring micro transfers in machine-to-machine and IoT applications where Raiden could provide a valuable scaling solution.

Raiden’s unique attributes make a good case for situations where instant finality, fast transactions, and high throughput at low prices are vital.

Perhaps it is in a rollup-centric Ethereum where Raiden will shine the most, and the future will tell whether running a Raiden Network on rollups will be favored over mainnet.

For Developers: Protocol Changes to Consider

Arbitrum support is currently available for the Light Client.

With this new Light Client Rohini release on Arbitrum, changes have been made to the smart contracts and new contracts were deployed. The main difference between the previous contracts and the new ones is that on-chain timeouts now are counted using timestamps rather than block numbers. This is needed because of the variable frequency in which rollups produce blocks.

For more details on the changes in the smart contract system, see this overview.

If you have tokens on the Light Client Krittika mainnet version and want to use them on the Arbitrum supported Light Client Rohini you will need to withdraw them prior to updating. With the current gas fees, this could be worth doing if the amount in a channel approximates 220 USD.

Both the Raiden Coruscant and the previous Raiden Light Client Krittika mainnet releases are still available if you don’t want to use Raiden on Arbitrum just yet.

The Ethereum mainnet version of the Raiden Light Client dApp is accessible via this new URL, while the new Arbitrum One release can be accessed from the previous raiden.network URL after confirming the update.

If you are using the Light Client SDK or CLI you can simply choose the latest Krittika release for mainnet or the new v3 Rohini release for Arbitrum One.

For Raiden Coruscant, the Ethereum mainnet version can be downloaded and accessed exactly as before.

Test the Light Client on Arbitrum

The Rohini release is available on the Arbitrum testnet Rinkeby. Before using the Raiden dApp or the SDK on Arbitrum, make sure to add the Rinkeby testnet to your Metamask account (e.g. via Chainlist).

Support, Feedback and Bug Report

For any questions, feedback and bug reports you can reach us on Discord.
