295.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand to the injured list

 296.
The Reds first baseman has been placed on the injured list with a fracture in his wrist that is apparently unrelated to him getting hit by a pitch in his wrist at the end of April that kept him out of the lineup for several days. No one seems to know what’s going on there. We wrote about this earlier today and you can get more details here.

 297.
Mike Ford signs a big league deal

 298.
After releasing Mike Ford several days ago rather than call him up to the big leagues, the Reds have now signed him to a big league deal and added him to the active roster. We covered that more in depth earlier today and you can check that out here.

 359.

The Cincinnati Reds signed Mike Ford to a big league contract earlier today, but hasn’t made it official yet. The roster move and or moves that were coming along with that were unknown, but we’re seeing how it’s playing out now as the Reds just announced the deal along with the placement of Christian Encarnacion-Strand on the injured list with a right ulnar styloid fracture. They have also moved left-handed pitcher Brandon Williamson to the 60-day injured list to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Ford.

 360.
We wrote about Mike Ford earlier today when it was reported that he signed his big league deal. He’s out of options, so the Reds are committing to him being on the big league club or risking losing him on waivers if they want to remove him from the 26-man roster down the road. You can read more about Ford from our earlier piece here.

 361.
As for Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s injury….. if you weren’t quickly aware of what an ulnar styloid fracture is – you’re not alone. The google machine says that ulnar styloid fracture is a “common type of wrist injury involving the end of the bony part of your wrist” and it “occurs in association with ~60% of distal radius fractures.”

 362.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand was hit by a pitch on April 27th. He didn’t play on April 28th and had an X-ray. Manager David Bell said that they didn’t show a fracture, but imaging did reveal he likely had a previous fracture in his wrist and the team was going to monitor it. Fast forward nearly two weeks and now the Reds first baseman is on the injured list with a fracture in his wrist.

 363.
Update at 3:45pm ET

 364.
Charlie Goldsmith has a little more information from David Bell

 365.

 366.
David Bell said a new fracture was revealed with CES. He’ll miss a month to six weeks.

 368.

 369.
Brandon Williamson being moved to the 60-day injured list doesn’t change much of anything for him. He hasn’t pitched this season and is dealing with a shoulder issue. He has not yet begun a rehab assignment, though he is expected to start one this week. Given that he’s yet to pitch, he’ll likely require most of, if not all 30 days of his allotted rehab time to get ready. That would put him well beyond the 60-days and doesn’t push back his ETA if things go well for him while rehabbing in the minor leagues.

 387.

 388.

Do you enjoy being confused? If so, you’ve got to be loving the last week of the Mike Ford and Cincinnati Reds timeline. Ford, who was in Triple-A Louisville, opted out of his contract with the club as he was on a minor league deal at the time and had an opt-out date. That put the Reds on the clock, so to speak, to decide whether to grant him his release or to add him to their big league roster. They ultimately decided to give him his release. Well, fast forward a couple of days and the Reds have now signed him to a big league deal according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

 389.
Three days ago, Mike Ford wasn’t good enough to call up to the big leagues as they hung on to Nick Martini and Bubba Thompson at the end of their bench. Yesterday the Reds optioned both Martini and Thompson to the minor leagues and called up Conner Capel from Triple-A, who required a 40-man roster spot. Whenever the Ford deal become official, we will have to be called up because he’s out of options, and will require a roster move on both the 26-man and the 40-man.

 390.
The move has been officially announced, along with the placement of Christian Encarnacion-Strand on the injured list with a fracture in his wrist and the moving of Brandon Williamson to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Ford will be joining the Reds big league club. He crushed the ball in Triple-A during April with Louisville. In his 22 games with the Bats he hit .325/.412/.590 with 12 walks, 10 extra-base hits, and 18 strikeouts in 97 plate appearances. Despite being a left-handed hitter, he terrorized left-handed pitching while in the minors this season – hitting .370/.485/.778 against them in 33 trips to the plate. He was solid against right-handed pitchers, hitting .266/.333/.438 against them.

 391.
The Reds offense has been in a slump like they haven’t seen in over 50 years. Matt Wilkes points out that the Reds OPS of .490 in the last 11 games is the lowest in an 11-game span since 1971 by the club. Perhaps Ford, who hasn’t played in a game in May, can help get things moving in the right direction.

 410.

Last week, we took a fond and respectful, if urine-soaked, look back at the bathrooms of Crosley Field. We now visit our most excellent cement palace, Riverfront Stadium.

 411.
All I remember of the bathrooms at Riverfront were… a lot of grey. It seemed to somehow have more walls than other bathrooms. I invite input from females who

 412.
That’s appropriate for Riverfront, I suppose. I seem to remember stalls painted the same color as the level layer, or at least a section of it. It’s appropriate for the level of warmth and civic distinctiveness that went into our concrete hug.

 413.
For all that Riverfront is considered featureless, it stands as perhaps the only sports home to snatch boldness and ingenuity from the jaws of basic, and it happened in a bathroom.

 414.
This is thanks to the still-nascent Big Red Machine, which stamped why most remember Riverfront fondly in the first place. For those of you who don’t know the story, the following photo tells it:

 415.

 416.
Indeed, this is one MLB Hall of Famer and one self-sabotaging not-MLB Hall of Famer on neighboring toilets. Famous as this picture is, I haven’t been able to find out who took it. And yet it’s in every single one of our lives because Pete Rose and Tony Perez decided to place a bet on who could first and best christen the Reds’ new home, because of course Pete Rose did.

 417.
In addition to the name of the noble photographer, I also haven’t been able to discover who won the dropping-off contest. I suppose it depends on who was spreading the story, but the more popular version favors Rose.

 418.
There’s a lot going on here, of course. I’ve seen this print hanging in various locations throughout my life– including, yes, the Reds Hall of Fame– but this particular version offers by far the best presentation.

 419.
Look at the care rendered unto this artifact. This fine heirloom-quality item is matted, and the framing carefully chosen– an excellent deep grey tone to highlight the cement palate of the crapper walls. Then of course there’s the black frame to serve as a classic and elegant finish, worthy of the finest museums in all Christendom. It is a most and properly reverent showcasing of art, and it is of and from us.

 420.
I don’t mean to overemphasize this particular form of the photo (yours for $99.00) but if you want to understand the West Side, this is a good place to start. Our people not only wager on bowel movements, we do so in manner which bespeaks art– art which we then reproduce, carefully crop, authenticate with autographs, and hang in our dens.

 421.
Also notice that Tony Perez is pretty much naked. Maybe it’s the angle of the moment and there are in fact a pair of shorts in play here, but that’s certainly the impression we’re left with. It’s easy to get lost in the wonder of the moment, but fine art connoisseurs like you and me notice subtle details such as this.

 422.
I want to know two things:

 423.
-We must gather a master list of places this photo has been seen, as it will help future archeologists mark out who’s artistically advanced and who’s an East Sider.

 424.
-I was far more girl than lady in the Riverfront days, so I humbly ask my sisters to provide a woman-level context for the bathrooms there, one that’s more complex than a person in a pink terrycloth romper might have.

 425.

 474.
Frankie Montas returned to the mound after a short injured list stint and cruised through the first two inning of the game. But he gave up a leadoff walk in the 3rd and as the saying going – it came back to haunt him. Jake McCarthy moved up to third on a single by Tucker Barnhart and then scored on a force out to put Arizona up 1-0.

 475.
The Diamondbacks would get back on the board in the 5th with the help of an error as Elly De La Cruz got caught on a ball between hops and had it clank off his glove, allowing Tucker Barnhart to reach. He would then come around to score after back-to-back singles. Christian Encarnacion-Strand fielded a grounder by the next batter and came up throwing to the plate to catch Kevin Newman in a rundown where he’d eventually be tagged out. A fly out to center would end the inning and strand two runners on.

 476.
In the top of the 6th inning Frankie Montas would get a pop up to start the frame, then back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. That would complete his day, with just one earned run and seven strikeouts, but he exited the game with his team trailing 2-0 and having just one hit on the night.

 477.
Justin Wilson took over for Cincinnati in the 7th and after giving up two singles he served up a 3-run home run to Corbin Carroll that put Arizona up 5-0. Ketel Marte followed with a homer of his own as he played add on.

 478.
The Reds finally got a second hit of the day when Jonathan India hit a home run to center, just out of the reach of a leaping Corbin Carroll at the wall. Cincinnati would get another home run in the bottom of the 9th when Tyler Stephenson cracked his 4th of the season that landed on top of the Reds bullpen to make it 6-2. That was all they’d get as they dropped the series opener.

 479.
Key Moment of the Game

 480.
Justin Wilson giving up a 3-run home run to Corbin Carroll in the 7th inning that turned a 2-0 lead into a 5-0 lead for Arizona and put the game out of reach for a struggling Reds offense.

 481.
Notes Worth Noting

 482.
The Reds have now lost six games in a row and scored just 10 runs during those six games.

Righties haven’t hit for much average at all, but they’re making contact and walking often. Teams have stacked their lineups with lefties against him thus far this season.

 836.

The Cincinnati Reds made a whole bunch of roster moves on Tuesday afternoon to prepare for the Arizona Diamondbacks series. The team activated starting pitcher Frankie Montas, which we knew was coming. They also activated outfielder TJ Friedl from the injured list after a 4-game rehab stint in Triple-A with the Louisville Bats. Cincinnati is also adding otufielder Conner Capel to the roster, calling him up from Louisville. Heading to the minor leagues are Nick Martini and Bubba Thompson. To make room on the 40-man roster for Capel, the club moved pitcher Ian Gibaut to the 60-day injured list.

 837.
Let’s start with Conner Capel. He has played in 54 big league games over the past two years for St. Louis and Oakland. He’s hit .280/.366/.408 in that time with 17 walks and 35 strikeouts in 145 plate appearances. In the big leagues he’s only played in the corner outfield spots, but he has played center in the minor leagues – including this year with Triple-A Louisville. With the Bats this year he’s played 31 games and has hit .268/.397/.567 with 20 walks and 21 strikeouts.

 838.
Capel got out to a hot start, posting a 1.274 OPS in the first two weeks of the season. He’s cooled off a bit since, hitting .246/.351/.426 in his last 19 games with 11 walks and 17 strikeouts. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter has crushed righties in the minors this season, hitting .279/.405/.632. He’s held his own against lefties, hitting .241/.378/.414 with six walks and eight strikeouts. You can see his career stats here.

 839.
TJ Friedl will be making his season debut whenever he gets into a game. He’s coming back from a broken wrist suffered in the middle of spring training. In his four games on rehab he hit .250/.333/.438 with two walks and three strikeouts. Three of his four hits were doubles.

 840.
Nick Martini is heading to join Triple-A Louisville. Bubba Thompson, though, is heading to Double-A Chattanooga.

 841.
As for Ian Gibaut, nothing really changes much for him at this point. He’s been on the injured list all season (he attempted two different rehab stints and was called back from both of them) and the move to the 60-day injured list simply opens up a roster spot. Update: Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that Gibaut will undergo surgery on Thursday, but the extent of it won’t be known just yet.

 842.

 843.
David Bell on Ian Gibaut: "Surgery is scheduled for Thursday. We'll know more Wednesday on exactly what's going to be done. It's a carpel tunnel and or an AIN (nerve) release. Not for sure that (release) will need to happen. That will be determined on Wednesday."

 864.

The Cincinnati Reds announced that Frankie Montas would be their starting pitcher on Tuesday when the club gets back on the field at Great American Ball Park against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s currently on the injured list and needs to be activated for that start to happen. There were some questions about who would get sent out to make a spot for him and today we’ve got that answer as the team optioned left-handed reliever Sam Moll to Triple-A Louisville.

 865.
Cincinnati acquired Sam Moll last year at the trade deadline in a deal that sent Joe Boyle to join the Athletics. Moll came to Cincinnati and posted a 0.73 ERA in 25 games after the move was made. This season he began the year on the injured list, but was activated two weeks ago. In that time he’s pitched in five games and not allowed a run. In his 30 games as a Red he’s allowed two entire runs and somehow he just got sent to the minor leagues.

 866.
Saved simply by the grace of not having options were Lucas Sims and his ERA of 6.10 and Emilio Pagan and his ERA of 5.93. And while they were never going to option their closer, Alexis Diaz is rocking a 6.57 ERA right now, too, and walking/hitting a bunch of guys along the way.

 867.
What happened here is pretty simple: Sam Moll has options and most of the bullpen doesn’t. So the Reds decided that sending down someone who has performed incredibly well was better than potentially losing someone who would have to clear waivers if they were sent down instead. Right, wrong, fair, unfair – that’s pretty much all that went into the decision. He had options available and others didn’t. Performance was not a consideration.

 868.
Cincinnati may not be done making moves. David Bell mentioned on Sunday that it may be possible that outfielder TJ Friedl returns on Tuesday, too. If he’s going to be activated there will be a need for another roster move. We’ll have to wait and see if that happens or not.

 888.

If there was any good news that came after the Cincinnati Reds were swept by the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend it’s that the club will be getting Frankie Montas back when they take the field next.

 889.
The Reds are off on Monday, but they get back on the field on Tuesday evening against the Arizona Diamondbacks. When they do, it’s going to be Frankie Montas taking the mound for Cincinnati, as reported by Mark Sheldon of Reds.com. Graham Ashcraft and Hunter Greene will follow him for Wednesday and Thursday’s games.

 890.
Montas will be returning to the mound for the first time since he was placed on the injured list on April 22nd after exiting his start on the day prior when he was hit by a comebacker in the forearm. In his 19.1 innings over his five starts (he exited his last start in the 1st inning) he’s posted a 4.19 ERA.

 891.
While nothing’s been officially announced yet, this almost assuredly means that Nick Martinez will be moving back into the bullpen after filling in for Montas in the rotation while he was out. The move to activate Montas and move Martinez to the bullpen is going to mean someone currently in the bullpen is going to be heading out. Who that happens to be is where things get interesting. The three players with the worst ERA of the group are Alexis Diaz, Lucas Sims, and Emilio Pagan. They’re not going to option their closer. Both Sims and Pagan are out of options. It seems unlikely that they’d designate either for assignment.

 892.
TJ Friedl’s Rehab

 893.
On Sunday TJ Friedl played in his 4th rehab game with the Louisville Bats. He’s working his way back from a broken wrist suffered while diving for a ball during spring training. He picked up two hits in the afternoon – a single and a double.

 894.

 895. https://www.redlegnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/TJ-Friedl-Rehab.mp4

 896.
In his 16 at-bats with Louisville, Friedl had four hits (.250) with three doubles, two walks, and three strikeouts. He’s been hitting the ball with some authority over the week he was with the Bats. His average exit velocity on his 13 batted balls is 89.4 MPH. Last season his exit velocity on non-bunts was 86.7 MPH.

 897.
Manager David Bell said before the game on Sunday that after the game he was going to talk to TJ Friedl and see how things are going with the hope that he may be able to return on Tuesday. Both the Reds and Bats have Monday off.

 898.
If Cincinnati is going to activate Friedl on Tuesday it would mean four roster moves that are being made to go along with the one for Montas. The likely options for the Reds on this side would be Nick Martini or Bubba Thompson. They both have options available and could be sent to the minor leagues without being designated for assignment.

 949.
The game got out to a nice start for Nick Lodolo as he got a pop up and a strikeout to begin his day. But then he gave up a double, an RBI single, and a 2-run homer off of the bat of Jordan Westburg and just like that the Orioles had a 3-0 lead in the 1st.

 950.
Nick Lodolo settled in from that point for a bit, but he ran into trouble again in the 5th inning – once again with two outs. He hit Ramon Urias and then walked Gunnar Hernderson before giving up a double to Adley Rutschman that brought a run in to extend the Baltimore lead to 4-0.

 951.
The Reds headed into the bottom of the inning without having a single baserunner as yet again their offense was struggling to get anything at all going. Christian Encarnacion-Strand broke up the perfect game with one out in the inning with a line drive hit into center. Jonathan India followed up with a walk to bring up Nick Martini, but not before the Orioles pitching coach made a trip to the mound to discuss the situation. Whatever was said worked as Martini flew out and Santiago Espinal popped up in foul territory to strand both runners.

 952.
Brent Suter took over for Cincinnati in the 6th inning and worked around a walk to throw a shutout inning. He returned to start the 7th and gave up a leadoff home run that hit the top of the wall before bouncing into the stands that gave the Orioles a 5-run lead. The Baltimore offense wasn’t finished as they picked up a double and an RBI single to push their lead to 6-0.

 953.
With the Reds still trailing by six runs, Alexis Diaz came out to pitch the 9th inning since he hadn’t pitched in nearly a week. He may have been a bit rusty as he walked the first batter he saw and then gave up an RBI double to Colton Cowser that made it 7-0. A single followed up and put runners on the corners with no outs. Diaz then walked Gunnar Henderson on eight pitches before pitching coach Derek Johnson made a trip to the mound to try and settle his pitcher down and perhaps buy time for Emilio Pagan to continue warming up in the bullpen.

 954.
After a strikeout, Diaz was pulled from the game and Pagan made the walk from the bullpen to take over with one out and the bases loaded. He would strike out the first batter he faced but then gave up a grand slam to Anthony Santander that made it 11-0.

 955.
Baltimore headed into the 9th with Albert Suarez on the mound but after he struck out Luke Maile the Orioles made a pitching change…. in an 11-0 game in the 9th inning. Mike Baumann came into the game and immediately walked Will Benson and Elly De La Cruz. Spencer Steer then picked up a bloop single to center that loaded the bases. Jake Fraley followed up with a line drive single that made it 11-1. That was all she wrote, though, as Baltimore recorded the final two outs without another run scoring and completed the sweep.

 956.
Key Moment of the Game

 957.
On a day when the Reds had one run, it would probably be the 2-run homer in the 1st inning from Jordan Westburg that put the game entirely out of reach even if that was unknown at the time.

 958.
Notes Worth Noting

 959.
The Reds scored two runs in the series. They’ve now lost five games in a row.

 1334.
Trailing by one run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Christian Encarnacion-Strand struck out swinging and Jeimer Candelario popped up to send the Reds to their fourth consecutive loss. A ninth-inning run ended a 21-inning scoreless streak by the Reds offense dating back to Wednesday’s game in San Diego

 1335.
Today’s loss puts the third-place Reds 4 1/2 games behind first-place Milwaukee, and 3 1/2 games behind second-place Chicago.

 1336.
The Offense

 1337.
Reds hitters’ composite box-score line: 6-for-31, 2 walks drawn, 10 strikeouts.

 1338.
Orioles lefthander John Means made his first start and appearance of the year at the major league level, and completely shut down the Reds offense over his seven innings. He allowed only three hits while striking out eight.

 1339.
Former Reds lefthander Cionel Perez came on in the bottom of the eighth and allowed a leadoff single to Jeimer Candelario, but Santiago Espinal grounded into a quick double play to erase Candelario. Pinch-hitter Luke Maile flied out to end the inning.

 1340.
In the ninth, facing closer Craig Kimbrel, pinch-hitter Jake Fraley led off with a single, followed by a Jonathan India walk. That brought Elly De La Cruz to the plate representing the winning run, but De La Cruz looked at strike three from Kimbrel. Spencer Steer then hit an opposite-field single to right, scoring Fraley and sending pinch-runner Bubba Thompson to third with one out.

 1344.

 1345.
Orioles Manager Brandon Hyde then replaced Kimbrel with righthander Yennier Cano to face Tyler Stephenson. During Stephenson’s at-bat, Steer stole second to put the winning run at second. On a 3-2 pitch, Stephenson walked to load the bases. But the three ducks on the pond did not advance thereafter, and the Reds fell below .500.

 1346.
India’s 2-for-3 performance raised his batting average to .225.

 1347.
The Pitching

 1348.
Reds pitchers’ line for the day: 9 innings, 7 hits and 1 walk allowed, with 13 strikeouts and just two solo homers allowed. You can’t argue with what the hurlers produced this evening.

 1349.
Baltimore’s first two batters of the game reached on singles, and it didn’t take long for the here-we-go-again thoughts to creep in on the heels of a three-game losing streak. But starter Andrew Abbott shifted into another gear, popping up Ryan Mountcastle to left, and striking out Anthony Santander and Jordan Westburg both swinging — all while both runners stayed glued to their bases. It seemed like a very good sign.

 1350.
In the third inning, the Orioles had runners on first and third with two out, and Abbott benefited from an excellent play by first baseman Encarnacion-Strand on a hot shot by Santander right at the first-base bag for out number three.

 1351.
Baltimore broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth on a one-out Jorge Mateo solo home run. An inning later, Adley Rutschman did the same to make it 2-0.

 1352.
Manager David Bell removed Abbott from the game after five innings with a pitch count of 84, 60 for strikes. That’s a 71 percent strike rate, sterling for any pitcher. In his five innings, Abbott allowed seven hits while striking out eight and walking none. You really can’t ask for much more from a starting pitcher, particularly against a very good-hitting team.

 1353.
Nick Martinez, who surprisingly had the fourth-highest WAR on the team before today’s game (0.7), pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh. Lucas Sims and Sam Moll finished with a scoreless inning apiece.

 1354.

 1357.

 1358.
What’s New(s)

 1359.
Encarnacion-Strand’s bloop single to right field in the second inning ended an 0-for-41 streak by Reds players not named Elly De La Cruz. CES, an everyday player, has been a very pleasant surprise with the quality of his defense at first. But his hitting, which was what got him to the big leagues, has disappeared. Prior to today’s game, CES had a -0.6 WAR, the worst for any Reds player. He continues to swing at pitches way out of the strike zone, and as long as that continues, major league pitchers will continue to own him. Batting in the middle of a major-league batting order for a team that thinks it is a contender is not where hitting rehab needs to take place. CES has options, so let him go down to Louisville with the mandate that swinging at pitches in the dirt is unacceptable.

 1360.
It’s surprised me, but what we might actually be watching is development year #2 for players like CES and Will Benson, who both have hit far below expectations. Combine that with the fact that Candelario has been a huge disappointment to date and you currently have a couple of reserves in Espinal and Stuart Fairchild starting nearly every day, and you have a situation that most of us did not anticipate to happen this year. We’re still in the “it’s early” phase, but within that realm, it’s getting late.
