De quoi pouvons-nous donc converser ?</p> <p>P.S. Après (trop longue) réflexion, les médias sociaux ne me conviennent pas pour échanger avec les gens que j'apprécie. Déjà, certains n'y sont pas... Facebook, Twitter, Mastodon, ou autres, ce ne sont que des audiences fragmentées, et jamais des conversations centralisées. L'archivage et la mémoire, n'en parlons pas. J'observe aussi une très nette désertion de ces réseaux dans mon entourage amical. Bref, le blogue est prêt pour un "revival". It shows a lifeless toddler, lying face down on a popular Turkish beach, one of eleven Syrians who have almost certainly died as they tried to reach safety in Europe by boarding a smuggler's boat. Instead they ended up as the latest victims of Europe's paltry response in the face of a growing crisis.</p> <p>What struck me the most were his little sneakers, certainly lovingly put on by his parents that morning as they dressed him for their dangerous journey. One of my favorite moments of the morning is dressing my kids and helping them put on their shoes. They always seem to manage to put something on backwards, to our mutual amusement. Staring at the image, I couldn't help imagine that it was one of my own sons lying there drowned on the beach.</p> <p>I am currently in Hungary, documenting the journeys of Syrian refugees, the very journey that today took another young life. It's easy to blame the parents for exposing their son to such deadly danger, but only if you forget the barrel bombs and Islamic State (also known as ISIS) beheadings that they are fleeing. All morning yesterday at the Serbian-Hungarian border, I saw Syrian parents determinedly walking with their children - trying to remove them from the horrors of the slaughter in Syria, which have been allowed to continue for four years, and to the promise of security in Europe. Those parents are heroes; I admire their sheer determination to bring their children to a better life.</p> <p>[...] Some say the picture is too offensive to share online or print in our newspapers. But what I find offensive is that drowned children are washing up on our shorelines, when more could have been done to prevent their deaths.</p> <p>It was not an easy decision to share a brutal image of a drowned child. But I care about these children as much as my own. J’en veux pour preuve cet <b><i>a minima</i></b> dont on nous rebat les oreilles depuis une vingtaine d’années... au minimum : « une réforme <i>a minima</i> » (<i>Europe 1</i>), « une hausse <i>a minima</i> » (<i>Le Figaro</i>), « des vacances <i>a minima</i> » <i>(Les Échos</i>), « une communication <i>a minima</i> » (<i>La Croix</i>), « Pékin communique <i>a minima</i> » (<i>Le Parisien</i>), « La Russie s’engage <i>a minima</i> » (<i>France TV</i>), « si l’utilisateur était <i>a minima</i> informé de ce qui se passe » (<i>Libération</i>). Les beaux esprits nous assurent que ça fait chic, dans la conversation. L’ennui, c’est que les dictionnaires n’ont jamais accommodé ladite expression autrement qu’à la sauce juridique ; <b><i>a minima</i></b>, ellipse de la locution latine <i>a minima poena ad majorem</i> (« à partir de la plus petite peine vers la plus grande »), ne s’applique selon eux qu’à l’appel que forme le ministère public pour infliger une peine plus lourde — et non plus légère, comme on le pense souvent par contresens — que celle qui vient d’être prononcée : « Puis, sur appel <i>a minima</i> exigé par le “ministre” Weygand, [le Conseil de guerre] me condamnait à la peine de mort » écrit ainsi le général de Gaulle dans ses <i>Mémoires</i>. Il faut croire que le tour s’est depuis échappé des prétoires, en voyant au passage son sens évoluer.</p> <p><cite><i>Parler français</i> : "<a href="http://parler-francais.eklablog.com/c-est-bien-le-minimum-a118500558">C’est bien le minimum !</a>".</cite></p></blockquote> <p>Si la qualité de la langue vous tient un peu à cœur, vous pourriez <del>a minima</del> au minimum suivre <a href="http://parler-francais.eklablog.com">ce blogue</a>.</p> <p>Minima est le pluriel de minimum : <i>des minima de température</i>. Mais on peut dire indifféremment <i>des minimums</i>. C’est-à-dire qu’un Québécois sur deux ne sait, ou à peine, lire et écrire. Nous apprenons aujourd’hui que <a href="http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/elections-federales/201508/21/01-4894264-sondage-cropla-presse-un-quebecois-sur-cinq-ignore-qui-dirige-le-pays.php">20 % des Québécois ignorent</a> que ce sont les conservateurs qui sont au pouvoir au Canada, cet état de fait n’étant pas des plus récents (depuis 2006 !). C’est là qu’il découvre que le Chili a aussi ses peuplades sauvages, sur la Terre de Feu. Il va a leur rencontre de fin 1918 à 1924 et en ramène des témoignages photographiques. La Terre de Feu était celle des Selk'nams, peuple de chasseurs-cueilleurs semi-nomades. Vers 1880, des propriétaires d’estancias ont commencé à coloniser leurs terres ; la résistance des Selk'nams entraînera un génocide. Armés seulement d’arcs et de couteaux, il ne pouvaient lutter contre des milices dotées d’armes à feu. Famine et maladie aidant, leur population passa de 4000 en 1880 à quelques centaines de réfugiés autour de missions salésiennes en 1910. On se rappellera de l’ingénieur juif roumain Julius Popper (1857-1893), chasseur d’or sanguinaire, qui se voulait le moderne conquistador de la Terre de Feu, et qui organisa des parties de chasse au sauvage qui tenaient du pogrom, donnant des primes à qui rapporterait des oreilles ou des têtes de Selk'nams.</p> <p>L’un des tout derniers des Selk'nams était une femme, née vers 1900, <a href="http://www.thereedfoundation.org/rism/chapman/angela.htm">Ángela Loij</a> ; elle est morte en 1974 et le langage de son peuple <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/03/30/a-loss-for-words">s’éteindra en 2014</a> avec son dernier locuteur, qui ne connaissait plus que quelques mots, une métisse de mère <i>ona</i> née dans à l’estancia Viamonte, Herminia Vera. Certains essaient toutefois de <a href="http://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias/2015/08/150717_finde_selknam_idioma_unico_hablante_ac">préserver la mémoire de la langue</a>.</p> <p>Selk’nam voudrait dire “égaux et séparés”.</p> <p>Les photos de Gusinde sont souvent des reconstitutions, les nomades réfugiés dans des baraquements autour des missions se prêtant à recréer les scènes, costumes et rites de leur vie passée. Environ 1200 images ont été conservées, pour l’essentiel à l’<a href="http://www.anthropos.eu/anthropos/institute/index.php">institut Anthropos</a>, et font l’objet d’un premier beau livre édité chez <a href="http://exb.fr/">Xavier Barral</a>.</p> <p>En 1926, Gusinde obtient un doctorat d’anthropologie à Vienne et partira étudier les Pygmées du Congo.
