Who knew it was that easy to be the founder of a major open source project? It's not true, of course; I'm very much a bit player compared to heavy contributors like Walter Bender, Tomeu Vizoso, and Marco Presenti Gerri. But that's the great thing about open source; you start out just getting your feet wet by suggesting a cool idea, and you keep at it - submitting a few patches and managing a small piece of the project, in my case the Develop activity - and you can end up with tasks as big as you're up to - and even bigger - in your lap. So, we made it into Google Summer of Code. And, sad to say, the organization that conceived of Sugar and got it off the ground -- OLPC -- did not. So what? In my totally unbiased view, Sugarlabs would be a great organization to apply for in GSoC. We have 14 mentors lined up, last I counted, all of whom have demonstrated ability with Sugar and seriousness about helping students have a successful summer. We have varied project ideas - from simple stand-alone activities, to integrating large projects like Titanium or Java/IcedTea into the sugar platform. Some of our project ideas would give real value back to the open source world, like my favorite idea, integrating and creating a kick-ass UI for a datastore which combines tagging, POSIX semantics, and copy-on-write versioning to be just way cooler than your average file system - and which right now is just some code from one of our master hackers (cscott) which is gathering dust. Our mission is a big one - liberty and education for the world's children. And as netbooks get cheaper than textbooks, at least part of that mission is unstoppable - but we're some of the ones trying to make the education be meaningful, and almost the only ones who can do our piece of the puzzle with liberty and openness. As a mentor, I have some advice for the students who aren't sure if they can get in. Of course, you may be right - less than half of people will be accepted - but it's still worth it to try. We absolutely are giving a higher weight to interest, enthusiasm, and engagement than we are giving to experience and knowledge. You have to be decently smart, you have to be acceptably creative, but you do not have to be a young Linus Torvalds or Guido van Rossum in order to get in. What you do have to do is show that you are clear-eyed about what you are capable of, and work with the community to find something in that space that is useful for us. ... mañana: más o menos lo mismo, en español. It's an important chance for people to get to know each other, and for synergy to happen between different projects. Let's start with deployments. But our salaries in these far-off places do not stretch very well to pay the full cost of tickets to Boston. We are taking the bus and train to make our plane tickets as cheap (and low-carbon) as possible; your tax-deductible contribution would help. Then there's development. Sugar, as you know, is the free software that makes the XO run for kids. And the dirty secret is that free software is not actually a lot easier than the other kind. Primero, una reunión con mi amigo "el Roso" (no es su apodo real) en el ministerio de cultura y deportes. Generalmente, el MiCuDe bajo Colom está como la política extranjera gringa bajo Bush - horrorosamente mal, pero si lo cuentaras a alguien te dijerían que no es noticia porque siempre fue así. MiCuDe siempre fue, en cierta medida, el lugar de deshechos humanos del resto de gobierno, pero ahora realmente está peor. Antes la gente capaz eran escasamente una mayoría, ahora son una escasa menoría. Pero "el Roso" es uno de esa escasa menoría. Mi idea era que MiCuDe convocara una reunion entre los dos partes de MinEduc (ve blog anterior) junto con SeGePlan, con nosotros del lado de la mesa de SeGePlan. El supuesto interes de MiCuDe sería algo del cultura de software libre, o algo de preservación de idiomas mayas. Pero no me di cuenta que el interes de un funcionario de un ministerio de cultura es al reves. Allí los honestos y capaces te piden por favor buenas excusas para gastar los recursos que tienen, y solo los corruptos y ineptos quieren ahorrar. Entonces el problema no era la lógica rebuscado para involucrar a MiCuDe; era que un salon y unos cafecitos era muy poco gastar. Bueno, entonces, le dije, podemos hacer una reunion de linux con educación o una capacitación de maestros bilingues en internacionalización de software (libre). Platiqué con Bryan y Rabi de OLE Nepal. Muchas gracias con ellos, fueron muy abiertos a mis preguntas, y me dieron varios documentos para usar de modelos para OLE Nepal. Lo más importante que me dijeron es que necesito un producto que les interese al ministerio de educación en general. Ellos tienen un portal educativo con unas actividades educativas hechos por ellos en Flash, porque eso es lo más rapido desarrollar. Para nosotros, podría ser esas mismas cosas refritos y revendidos, podría ser unas instalaciones de moodle para escuelas, o podría ser un diccionario multi-maya (basado en el trabajo de <a href="http://maya.hum.sdu.dk/">John Dienhart</a>, si su universidad me da los derechos). Luego tuve una reunión con gente de las ONGs de software libre. De los 8 invitados, llegaron 2, lo cual fue un buen número para hacer un super plan de ataque. Casi sin que yo contara mi reunion con MiCuDe, el Jason me contó las dos propuestas que ya tenía trabajados: un foro de OLPC, y una capacitación para organizaciones indígenas en internacionalización de software (libre). Perfecto. También platicamos que hay que llegar al lugar en San Marcos donde entregaron unos cuantos XO para poder sacar la foto, y preguntarles cómo van con ellos. Seguramente nos contarán que sin ningun apoyo no sirven de nada las máquinas. Y eso nos dará una carta - la amenaza de mala prensa en corto plazo - que jugar con MinEduc, para que nos dejan por lo menos hacer un proyecto piloto para ayudar en San Marcos. Un problema que tenemos es cómo llamarnos. Hay tres redes internacionales que se están formando, y tenemos las características para pertenecer a todos los tres. Pero no nos podemos llamar "El capitulo Guatemala de <a href="http://www.ole.org">OLE</a> y <a href="http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_France">OLPC</a> y <a href="http://sugarlabs.org/go/Local_labs">Sugarlabs</a>". Las posibilidades: <ul><li>OLPC Guatemala: pro: la marca más reconocible y más obvio para incidir en un proyecto de XO. contras: lo más estrecho, y OLPC nos da menos reconocimiento como "parte de su equipo". Si tienes contactos claros y una meta compatible, te dejan usar el nombre, pero tienes que clarificar siempre que no hablas por ellos.</li><li>Sugarlabs Guatemala: pro: donde yo tengo más contacto y simpatía personal contras: más estrecho que OLE y menos conocido que OLPC.</li><li>OLE Guatemala: pro: visión más amplia; mejor conectados con financiamentos. contras: el nombre no dice mucho, y no parece que el equipo de Boston este muy prendido (aunque <a href="http://blog.olenepal.org/">OLE Nepal</a> sí camina). </li></ul>Al final decidí en mi primer presentación por un logo y nombre de OLE Guatemala, con las palabras "olpc guatemala sugarlabs guate" abajo en letras chiquitas. Todos los tres nombres salen con el tipo de letra (VAG Rounded), pero sin los colores, del logo de sugarlabs. Mi reunión de hoy fue con SeGePlan. Ellos tienen un análisis muy político de la situación. Claro dió las computadoras a Cohesión Social o la SOSEP; entonces, en este caso, MinEduc no tiene autonomía sino obedece los órdenes de la primera dama. Yo creo que pasó así, pero no creo que se puede pensar en MinEduc como un simple títere en esa situación. Su servidor (que es) Jameson Quinn (quien es) el programador de la actividad Develop (que es para) Sugar (que fue hecho por) el proyecto de Sugar Labs (que es) el entorno gráfico libre para educación (que fue desarrollado para) los laptops XO (que son de) OLPC (que es) el proyecto de los llamados "laptops de U$100" (que cuestan) U$200. Hace unas semanas, me enteré de que Claro, el brazo celular de Telmex/Carlos Slim aquí en Guatemala, está regalando 3,000 computadoras XO al Ministerio de Educación (Mineduc) del país. En el acto de entrega simbólica inicial, dijeron que la selección de escuelas iba a estar a cargo de la SOSEP, y todo lo demás, de Mineduc. (La SOSEP, la secretaría de obras sociales de la esposa del presidente, es una organización que ha hecho cosas buenas a pesar de ser, por su naturaleza, plenamente populista, partidaria, y polémica.) Fui tras la pista de quién las tiene a su cargo dentro de Mineduc, y me dijeron que es la DIGECADE, la dirección de gestión de calidad educativa. Logré un contacto adentro, y me dieron una cita para hoy. Fui a decirles: "Yo sé varias cosas de cómo implementar un programa de XO, y quiero ayudar que su programa sea un éxito. Lo voy a hacer desde adentro (si me quieren contratar) o afuera (si no). Lo que necesito de ustedes es saber qué planes y qué recursos tienen para este programa, para poder hacer propuestas que se ajusten a eso." Y me topé con un problema. La DIGECADE (y su rama de inovación educativa, con quien estaba yo reunido) tiene a su cargo la investigación, el apoyo técnico, y el diseño de contenidos para ese programa. Pero la logística y los recursos son del vicedespacho de certificación. Hasta allí, ninguna sorpresa; es inevitable que un proyecto se divida en feudos, y nada fuera de lo usual que los feudos estén totalmente desligados administrativamente. Pero esa división no es solamente administrativa, sino también temporal: las dos entidades van a trabajar casi solamente en serie, no en paralelo. Es la situación perfecta para, como decimos en Guatemala, "pasar el chayote", es decir, lavarse las manos de la responsabilidad de cualquier fracaso. DIGECADE podrá decir "Es culpa de ellos, dejaron todo mal"; y el vicedespacho de certificación podrá decir "lo dejamos todo encarrilado, pero ellos lo están echando a perder". Quiero contar algo para dar una idea del nivel de burocracia. Pero primero: es un blog público, y por supuesto es posible que ustedes con quien me reuní hoy van a leer esto en algún momento. Por favor, entiendan que no culpo a ustedes; es la situación y no la persona que marca estos padrones. (Tampoco tuve pelos en la lengua al hablar de la SOSEP, a la cual sinceramente deseo todo éxito.) Entonces: pedí en varios momentos y de varias formas que me fomentaran una reunion con los de Certificación, es decir, con la otra parte con quien van a tener que estar trabajando muy estrechamente, cuyas oficinas están a dos pisos y 40 metros de distancia. Y me dijeron: mejor no intentes hacer contacto con ellos; nosotros tampoco podemos contactarles directamente; hay que ir por los canales correctos; vamos a ver [...] qué [...] se puede [...] hacer. (los puntos suspensivos porque no pudieron comprometerse tan directamente, lo tuve que leer entrelíneas). Entonces: no me pudieron dar ningún detalle técnico, ni siquiera al nivel de "no se sabe", porque ellos no son los que deciden. Qué tan rápido hay que entregar las máquinas? Va a haber dinero para servidores a nivel escolar? Para internet? Va a ser un programa nacional, o un programa piloto regional? Esos eran, y siguen siendo, mis preguntas. Si todavía no se decidieron, está bien, pero quiero hablar con los que van a decidirlos. Entonces, al DIGECADE les hice la única propuesta que tengo que es concreta, que tiene que ver con ellos, y que no depende de las preguntas arriba: desarrollar un lector del formato "open ebook" basado en gecko. Un buen lector es clave para los XO, y el formato PDF, en mi opinión, nunca va a llenar las necesidades. Es un proyecto que me encantaría llevar a cabo, pero solo si me pagan. Tengo que buscar otro contacto para entrar con los de Certificación, o, mejor aún, con alguien a nivel de vice ministro. A ver cómo me va. No va a ser tan fácil, porque obviamente es allí donde se hacen las salchichas políticas, y no van a abrir las puertas a un fulano gringo. (o seré un gringo fulano?) Mañana tengo reunión con el tipo pilas de la fundación Argos, una fundación guatemalteca de software libre y temas sociales. Espero que sea más fructífera.
